Gully Rap

A hip-hop subgenre from Mumbai, India featuring vernacular lyrics in Hindi and regional dialects that depict street life and social realities.

What is Gully Rap?

Gully rap is an emerging genre of hip-hop music that originated from Mumbai. It has since spread across India. The genre features raw, vernacular lyrics in Hindi, Marathi, and regional dialects that depict the everyday struggles of urban poverty, corruption, crime, and social marginalization, typically over sparse trap-influenced beats produced with DIY methods. Gully means “narrow lane” in Hindi. By contrast to mainstream desi rap or Bollywood, gully rap has a socio-political emphasis.

Origins & Lineage

Rap in Mumbai started as a street rap in the 90s and now it has become one of the most entertaining and popular music genres. Hip-hop culture had been present in Mumbai for over decade before gully rap became popular. Inspired by American rappers like Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G. and Nas, the music discusses the street life in distinct Hindu-Urdu rhythm and cadence.

Rappers would post rap battles on a social media networking site called Orkut, which is now defunct. Originally, the language was English, but then a turning point occurred when the rappers used local Bambaiyya slang as well other languages (e.g. Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or Konkani). In 2015, “Mere Gully Mein” performed by DIVINE featuring Naezy was released, and its success marked the first time the genre hit the mainstream. DIVINE and Naezy are artists that are considered at the forefront of the genre.

How It’s Practiced

Gully rap predominantly utilizes Hindi laced with Mumbaiya slang, a vernacular dialect blending Hindi, Marathi influences, and Urdu-derived terms that mirror the linguistic hybridity of Mumbai’s urban underbelly. This foundation enables raw depiction of street realities, as in DIVINE’s “Yeh Mera Bombay” (2013), where slang evokes local grit without reliance on polished diction. Code-switching between Hindi, English loanwords, and regional tongues like Marathi or Tamil occurs frequently, allowing fluid shifts that amplify narrative punch and cultural resonance.

This framing cultivates a collective ethos of defiance, where participants reclaim agency by voicing unfiltered realities, as seen in cyphers that prioritize freestyle authenticity over polished production. The genre serves as street-level social commentary, addressing themes typically absent from mainstream Indian entertainment.

Gully Rap Today

The 2019 Bollywood film Gully Boy tracks the story of an aspiring rapper from the slums of Mumbai. The release of the 2019 film Gully Boy profoundly shaped gully rap’s trajectory into the 2020s by elevating its visibility and attracting major label investments, leading to a surge in signed artists and polished productions that bridged underground roots with commercial viability. This mainstreaming accelerated as artists transitioned from street cyphers to global stages, with empirical evidence in the genre’s integration into Bollywood soundtracks and advertising campaigns targeting urban youth demographics.

International collaborations marked a key evolutionary shift, exemplified by Mumbai-based rapper DIVINE’s partnerships with American artists such as Nas, Pusha T, and Vince Staples, which introduced gully rap’s raw narratives to broader audiences and facilitated cross-cultural exchanges starting around 2020. VICE made a documentary called Kya Bolta Bantai discussing the emergence of the genre.

Common Misconceptions

Gully rap is often conflated with all Indian hip-hop, but it specifically refers to the Mumbai-originated street style emphasizing local dialects and working-class narratives. While influenced by American rap, the rap started off as a derivative of American rap, but within a few years became original and become mainstream. The genre should not be reduced to the Bollywood film that popularized it; gully rap existed as an underground movement for years before commercial recognition.

The term “gully” is also used in Jamaican dancehall culture (referring to the Gully vs Gaza rivalry), which is entirely separate from the Indian hip-hop genre.

How to Begin

Begin with the foundational track “Mere Gully Mein” by DIVINE and Naezy from 2015, which catalyzed the movement. Explore DIVINE’s discography, particularly “Yeh Mera Bombay” for understanding the genre’s linguistic texture. The 2019 film Gully Boy provides accessible context, though the soundtrack offers a more commercialized version of the sound. Verifiable community impacts include skill-building through informal cyphers and workshops, which channel youthful energy into creative expression and performance proficiency. Seek out street cyphers and freestyle sessions from Mumbai’s chawls and slums to experience the genre in its rawest form.
