About This Event

Description

Imagine three months of unbroken silence, meditation, and monastic discipline in the bush of Western Australia—a rare opportunity to step fully into a traditional Buddhist practice rhythm and cultivate the deep concentration that transforms ordinary consciousness into states of profound peace. Vassa, the traditional Buddhist Rains Retreat, has been observed for twenty-five centuries as a sacred period of intensive practice. At Jhana Grove Retreat Centre, this ancient container becomes yours: a self-directed, three-month residential stay from July 19 to October 7, 2027, held within a community of experienced practitioners and rooted in the teachings of Ajahn Brahm, a beloved Buddhist teacher known for bringing Theravada practice to life for Western students.

This is not a structured course with daily instructions. Rather, it is an invitation to mature practitioners to deepen their own meditation within a contained, supportive environment built on the Eight Precepts and monastic simplicity. If you have already sat a nine-day retreat with Ajahn Brahm and maintain a committed daily practice, Vassa offers something rare: the gift of time, community, silence, and the accountability of traditional monastic form. Only fifteen places are available, allocated to applicants who meet the criteria and feel genuinely called to this work.

What to Expect

Three months of self-directed practice in silence, supported by the rhythms of monastic living and the presence of a like-minded sangha (community). Days unfold with meditation, simple meals, walking practice, and solitude—structured enough to hold concentration, open enough to follow your own practice wisdom. The retreat center provides the container; you provide the commitment. Many practitioners find that extended time in silence and simplicity allows insights to mature and mental patterns to quiet in ways that shorter retreats cannot reach. You will leave with deepened meditation stability, clearer understanding of your own practice, and the lasting support of a committed community.

About the Artist

Ajahn Brahm is a British-American Buddhist monk and teacher who leads the Dhammakaya International Society of Australia. Over decades, he has become known for making Theravada Buddhist practice accessible and alive for Western lay audiences through teaching, writing, and his gift for translating ancient wisdom into contemporary language. His presence as a touchstone for this Vassa retreat honors the lineage while welcoming sincere Western practitioners.

Common Questions

FAQs

Vassa is the traditional three-month Buddhist rains retreat (typically July–October), and committing to the full period allows you to move through the initial settling of the mind into genuine deepening of samadhi and insight in a way weekend retreats cannot provide. Ajahn Brahm structures Vassa specifically around the rhythms of monastic practice, so you'll be living within that container rather than visiting it—this transforms how the teachings land and how your own practice stabilizes.
Ajahn Brahm is known for combining rigorous Pali Canon-based Theravada instruction with immediate accessibility and humor; he doesn't assume prior knowledge and actively engages Western skepticism rather than sidestepping it. In a three-month setting, you'll experience his teaching not as polished talks but as organic responses to the actual struggles and questions that arise in your practice—this is where his gift for making classical Buddhism relevant to contemporary doubt really shows.
The Thai Forest approach emphasizes rigorous mindfulness and the cultivation of deep concentration (samadhi) as the foundation for insight, which means you won't be doing scattered meditation techniques—the retreat builds systematically toward stable, absorptive states from which wisdom naturally arises. Ajahn Brahm brings this lineage's integration of strict discipline with compassion, so the retreat environment will feel both seriously committed and remarkably warm.
Ajahn Brahm's work has always been explicitly about making Theravada accessible to Western practitioners, so the retreat is grounded in classical Pali Canon teachings and the Theravada path—it's designed for people serious about that lineage, though his teaching is inclusive enough that genuine practitioners from other traditions are welcome to engage respectfully. If you're looking for a syncretistic or eclectic approach, this isn't it; if you're exploring whether Theravada resonates with you, this is an ideal deep immersion.
