Spiritual Retreat
Description
The Winter Retreat is a four-day residential retreat at The Land, a 160-acre property of redwoods, gardens and river in Philo, in Mendocino County, California. It is built around the turn of the year: a chance to take stock of what the past twelve months gave you and make room for what you want next. The program combines Eros philosophy classes, meditation, movement, long walks and shared meals, and it suits anyone who wants to spend the new year slowing down rather than speeding up.
What to Expect
The retreat runs four days and three nights, and the days follow a simple, steady rhythm. Mornings begin at 6:30 with an optional Orgasmic Meditation practice, followed at 7:30 by Tibetan practice. Breakfast comes next, and meals are paired with seva, the shared work of keeping the community running.
From 10:00 to 12:00 there is a class or activity block, with Eros philosophy taught by senior faculty. After lunch there is free time from 1:00 to 2:30, then a long movement session from 2:30 to 4:45. A short break leads into an optional evening Orgasmic Meditation practice at 5:10, and dinner is at 6:00. Evenings close with an activity from 7:00 to 8:30, often fireside conversation.
Winter shapes the atmosphere. The meadow turns deep green, frogs come out after the first rains, and the kitchen cooks with whatever the garden is still producing. Walks lead into the old-growth redwood grove, and the quiet is the kind you notice in your body.
The Setting
The Land sits among redwoods, organic gardens and a river. Meals are made from the property's own harvest by the resident chefs and served at long tables, with warming food suited to the season.
You can choose between communal accommodations and cabins. The Wilderness Cabins are rustic on the outside, with contemporary design and interiors, and are available for single or double occupancy. Shared rooms are also offered for those who prefer them.
Before You Go
You do not need prior experience with Orgasmic Meditation. The morning and evening practices are optional, and training is available if you are new to it. The Eros philosophy classes and other daily sessions are part of the shared program, and the seva that accompanies meals is part of how the days run.
Plan for a winter stay in the redwoods, with time outdoors on walks as well as quiet hours by the fire.
