Wellness Retreat
Description
Sweat and Serenity is a spring wellness retreat on the banks of the River Thames, held at Hardwick Estate with Sadhama near Reading in Oxfordshire. Over a long weekend, it combines a traditional sweat lodge ceremony, yoga, pranayama, Ayurveda, tree meditation, mantra and wild swimming. It is now in its seventh year, and it suits anyone who wants to set down stress and find a steadier, more grounded sense of themselves, with no prior yoga or meditation experience required.
What to Expect
The centrepiece is the sweat lodge ceremony, hosted by Buzzard Medicine in a dome of bent hazel poles that is smudged, blessed, then covered with blankets and insulated. Stones heated in a wood fire are brought inside, and herbs and water are applied to release an aromatic vapour. Participants move through several cycles of sweating and chanting, with time to rest and cool down between each one. Shamanic drumming and chanting accompany the ceremony, which is led by experienced practitioners. The lodge can be powerful, so it helps to leave yourself time afterwards to integrate.
Around the lodge, the days are shaped by gentler practices:
- Morning yoga, working with asana, breathwork and cleansing practices
- Pranayama, pairing energising breathing with cooling and calming techniques
- Tree meditation, learning ways to meditate with the stillness of the trees
- Yoga and Ayurveda workshops on how your own constitution shows up when you sit to meditate, and how to work with it
- A personal Ayurvedic assessment
- Mantra meditation and chanting
- Wild swimming in the river
- Evenings of storytelling, singing and live music around the campfire, with invited musicians
Guided writing and mindful journeying through words are part of the weekend too. Past guests describe joining in as much or as little as suits them, and feeling held and unjudged throughout.
The Setting
Hardwick Estate sits on a clean, quiet stretch of the Thames in the rolling Thames Valley, a spot listed among the best wild swimming places in the UK. Guests describe 200 year old oaks, open fields and green hills in the distance, with the river at the end of the campsite. Some have also mentioned a sauna nearby.
Meals are organic, locally sourced and prepared with Ayurvedic principles in mind, and Ayurvedic teas are served throughout. Past guests have called the food some of the best vegan cooking they have had. Vegan meals are offered, and food allergies and intolerances can be accommodated.
Before You Go
All levels are welcome. People who describe themselves as beginners report that the retreat is friendly and unpressured. The retreat is taught in English.
Included in your stay are the sweat lodge ceremony, morning yoga and pranayama, tree meditation, the yoga and Ayurveda workshops, mantra meditation, your personal Ayurvedic assessment, campfire singing and live music, all meals and Ayurvedic teas, and time on the estate, including swimming in the Thames. Since you will be swimming and sweating, bring clothing for both, along with layers for evenings by the fire.
