Healing Retreat
Description
Grief Camp is a healing retreat at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, led by grief experts Barri Leiner Grant and Kelsey Moro. Over four days, it offers practical tools for living with loss, combining grief education with movement, writing, meditation, and rest. It is open to people at any point in their grief, as well as clinicians, coaches, and anyone supporting other grievers.
The premise is simple: you don't have to choose between falling apart and staying strong. Most of us are pushed to hurry back to life as we knew it, and few of us have been taught how to move through loss. This grief retreat gives you time and company to be with it instead.
What to Expect
Barri Grant and Kelsey Moro teach how grief shows up in the body, mind, and spirit, blending evidence-based education with experiential learning. The learning sessions are short, and community time is a real part of the program. The aim is that you feel less alone and begin a personal grief tending practice of your own.
The program takes in loss of life, past and present, and also losses that don't involve a death, such as changes in health, relationships, identity, and career. You will try movement, writing, meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, and deep rest, along with creative exercises meant to help move the energy grief creates through the body. You will also learn interventions for present-day emotional and psychological burdens, and coping strategies for healing, finding meaning, and seeking renewed joy.
You leave with a personal, culturally informed, and flexible process for caring for yourself, and some insight into how to support others.
The rhythm of the days is steady:
- Opening day: check-in begins at 2:00 pm, with a Kripalu Yoga class, dinner, and a first program session from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.
- Full days: yoga at 6:30 am, silent breakfast, a program session from 9:00 to 11:30 am, lunch, another session from 1:30 to 4:00 pm, an afternoon yoga class, and dinner.
- Closing day: morning yoga, silent breakfast, a final session from 9:00 to 11:00 am, then lunch and departure.
Times can shift, and the schedule given at check-in has the details and room locations.

The Setting
Kripalu is a yoga and health center in Stockbridge, in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. Accommodations are intentionally simple, meant to help you unplug and feel grounded. You can choose a private room if you want solitude, or a shared, community-style dorm if you want connection. Rooms are ready by 4:00 pm, and a luggage room is available if you arrive earlier.
Three meals a day are included, with breakfast eaten in silence. Your stay also includes more than ten yoga classes over the retreat and access to the Kripalu grounds. Healing Arts sessions and items from the Kripalu Shop and Cafe are available for an additional cost.
Before You Go
All levels are welcome, and no experience with meditation, yoga, or wellness practices is needed. The program is offered in English.
Participants are asked to have at least six months of time since their loss. If your loss was more recent, contact the retreat hosts before registering so they can make sure the retreat can support you at this time.
You will receive an intake form to complete before you arrive. Bring a meaningful object or a photo of a loved one.
On the last day, room check-out is at 10:00 am, and you may stay on campus and take part in workshops until 2:00 pm.
