Description
This EMDR and TRE workshop in London is a four-hour afternoon session on how trauma is held in the body and nervous system, and on gentle tools for regulating and integrating it. It is open to anyone who has lived through traumatic experiences, big or small, including people already doing EMDR or other therapeutic work who want ways to integrate it. It is led by Luke Mullen and Roger Mills at The Arc Centre in Islington.
What to Expect
The workshop runs from 14:00 to 18:00 and begins with understanding. You look at what makes an event traumatic, how overwhelm leaves experience incompletely processed in the nervous system and fascia, and the difference between acute, developmental and complex trauma, and subtler, pervasive wounding. From there the session covers how trauma shows up physically (fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses, chronic tension), emotionally (shame, fear, anger, numbness) and in thought and behaviour (intrusive memories, avoidance, hyper-vigilance).
The practical part draws on three areas:
- Breathwork to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, including a version of Wim Hof breathing or similar.
- EMDR strategies: calm place or safe space visualisation, Resource Figures for reframing aspects of difficult experiences, and bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping.
- TRE (Trauma & Tension Releasing Exercises): learning and practising the sequence, and how the body's natural tremoring reflex can support soothing and integration.
The two methods are brought together, with attention to why TRE helps ground and settle the body after EMDR. The workshop is clear that TRE is not catharsis. It is not about pushing through or re-traumatising, but about letting the body recalibrate. Material is introduced in manageable amounts, you are always invited to set your own pace, and the emphasis is on tools you can use by yourself afterwards.
About Luke Mullen
Luke Mullen is a kinesiologist, TRE provider and embodiment coach who specialises in stress and trauma. He brings the somatic side of the afternoon, guiding the TRE practice and the work with the body's protective states.
About Roger Mills
Roger Mills is a psychotherapist and EMDR specialist with over 20 years of experience working with PTSD. His long clinical background shapes the EMDR portion of the workshop and its attention to safety.
The Setting
The workshop takes place at The Arc Centre, 98 Saint Paul Street, Islington, London N1 7DF.
Before You Go
No prior experience of EMDR or TRE is required. The workshop is aimed at people who feel overwhelmed, anxious, triggered or stuck in protective states and want gentle practices for regulation. It is not suitable for anyone in active crisis without additional support. Participants should feel reasonably safe in the body and prepared to work with states of activation, and the pacing is set by what each person can hold.
