About This Event

Description

Join Bhante Joe Atulo for a grounded, accessible meditation session rooted in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Whether you're deepening an established practice or exploring Buddhist meditation for the first time, this monthly gathering offers a structured 90-minute container for collective practice, guided insight, and genuine spiritual community—all from the comfort of your home. This is meditation as it has been taught for centuries, adapted thoughtfully for modern seekers across North America.

Each session unfolds as a complete arc: opening chanting to center the group, guided meditation to settle the mind, a Dhamma talk exploring Buddhist teachings, and space for your questions and reflections. You'll experience what it feels like to practice in real time with others, cameras on, creating a living sense of sangha (community) rather than passive consumption. Sessions are never recorded—this protects your privacy and ensures everyone shows up authentically, fully present to the moment.

What to Expect

The gathering begins with traditional chanting, setting a contemplative tone and anchoring you in shared intention. Bhante Joe then guides you into meditation, offering clear instructions suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. The guided portion typically lasts 30–40 minutes, moving you into deeper states of calm and clarity. A Dhamma talk follows, exploring core Buddhist concepts—suffering, compassion, mindfulness, liberation—in language accessible to Western practitioners. The final portion opens to your questions, creating dialogue and direct transmission of the teachings. You'll leave with a settled nervous system, practical tools for your daily practice, and the felt sense of belonging to a sincere community of seekers.

About the Artist

Bhante Joe Atulo was ordained as a bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) in 2010 under the guidance of Ajahn Viradhammo, a respected teacher in the Thai Forest tradition. He trained extensively at Tisaraṇa Monastery and spent formative years in Thailand, deepening his understanding of Theravada practice and monastic discipline. His teaching draws from this rigorous training while remaining warm and accessible to Western lay audiences navigating modern life. Bhante Joe leads these monthly sessions as an offering to support sincere practice across North America.

Venue & Logistics

This is an online event held via video conference. Sessions run from 7:00–8:30 PM Eastern Time on the first and middle Sunday of each month. You'll need a device with internet access and a quiet space where you can sit comfortably. Wear clothing that allows ease of movement; have water nearby. Keeping your camera on is part of creating collective presence, though you may position it so you're visible but private. There are no prerequisites—all are welcome.

FAQs

Ajahn Brahm teaches directly from the Pali Canon within the Thai Forest tradition, but he's distinctive for explicitly addressing the skepticism and intellectual objections of Western practitioners—he doesn't ask you to believe anything on faith alone. His four decades of translating classical Theravada practice means the meditation instructions are rigorous and precise, grounded in samadhi (deep concentration) rather than the lighter mindfulness-based approaches that have become popular in secular contexts.
Ajahn Brahm's teaching is specifically designed to meet practitioners where they are, but his emphasis on developing deep samadhi (concentration) first means you'll benefit most if you come willing to sit with sustained focus rather than expecting quick insight. If you're brand new to meditation, his introductory guidance is clear, though his monthly sessions assume some basic familiarity with sitting practice—consider starting with his recorded talks or beginner resources if you've never meditated at all.
The Thai Forest lineage (his training under Ajahn Chah) emphasizes rigorous, systematic development of concentration and mindfulness in sequence, rather than sudden insight or paradox-based practices. Ajahn Brahm's teaching maintains this classical Theravada structure while making it intelligible to Western minds—you're not studying koans or chanting in Pali, but you are engaging the same disciplined, evidence-based meditation method that Thai Forest monks have refined for centuries.
Ajahn Brahm's regular teaching format typically includes both guided meditation and dharma instruction, though the exact structure of this monthly North America session may blend these elements—check the event details closer to the date for the specific format. His talks directly address real questions from practitioners (doubt, restlessness, how to integrate practice into daily life), so if you're attending for deeper understanding rather than silence alone, that context matters.
