[0:31] Om lead us from the unreal to the real.
[0:34] Lead us from darkness to light. Lead us
[0:38] from death to immortality.
[0:41] Om peace, peace,
[0:44] peace.
[0:48] Namaste and good morning.
[0:51] Namaste.
[0:53] So, I propose we start each session
[0:56] by a
[0:57] chanting Om for just a minute or so.
[1:01] And let's do it in a
[1:03] rolling fashion. Let's
[1:05] don't follow me. You begin and end the
[1:07] Om at your own pace. So, there's a
[1:10] rolling Om going on in the hall.
[1:14] Just for a minute.
[2:39] >> Very good.
[2:43] Spiritual life can be thought of as a
[2:45] journey.
[2:49] But it's worth thinking about what kind
[2:51] of journey are we talking about? One can
[2:53] go from one place to another. We have
[2:55] all come here from different parts of
[2:57] the world.
[2:59] So, it's a journey, definitely.
[3:01] And if you do a journey from one place
[3:04] to another with a spiritual goal, you
[3:06] call it a pilgrimage.
[3:09] So, that's going from one place to
[3:11] another. Sometimes spiritual life is
[3:12] thought of as a journey from one place
[3:14] to another.
[3:15] Um
[3:16] Here is the world, imperfect,
[3:19] problematic.
[3:20] And there is a perfect place,
[3:23] a heaven.
[3:25] Every civilization has a heaven concept.
[3:28] It's interesting that the Buddhists, who
[3:29] don't even believe in God,
[3:31] but still they have the Buddha lands,
[3:33] various conceptions of perfect Buddha
[3:36] heavens.
[3:37] So, a heaven concept where a place is
[3:39] perfect. You go from here to there.
[3:42] But Vedanta is not a journey from one
[3:44] place to another place.
[3:48] When we speak about Brahman, the
[3:49] absolute reality, ultimate reality, it's
[3:51] everywhere.
[3:53] So, you don't have to go anywhere to get
[3:55] it.
[3:56] Yes, if you go to heaven, you'll still
[3:57] find Brahman, but it's right here.
[4:00] So, it's not a journey from one place to
[4:03] another place.
[4:05] Where would you find enlightenment, our
[4:07] real nature, Brahman? Do you have to go
[4:09] to Benares? It's a good place, you
[4:11] should visit.
[4:12] Or Jerusalem, or Mecca, or some holy
[4:15] place, or to Rome.
[4:17] Um
[4:18] you can, and they're worthwhile
[4:19] journeys, but that's not the journey
[4:22] we're talking about.
[4:24] It's not even a journey in time.
[4:26] Sometimes spirituality is shown as a
[4:28] journey in time. This is an imperfect
[4:30] time, and a perfect time will come,
[4:33] maybe when the Messiah comes, after
[4:35] that.
[4:37] So, there's a spirituality which is not
[4:39] here, but it's there. You have to go
[4:40] there.
[4:42] There's a spirituality which is not now,
[4:43] but it's then.
[4:45] You have to wait till then.
[4:48] After something.
[4:51] A big billboard I saw in America.
[4:53] Um it says
[4:55] "After death
[4:57] you will see God." A little ominous.
[4:59] "After death, you will see God."
[5:02] And of course, below that there's a
[5:03] number, 1-800. Call Call this number.
[5:06] Call this number with few dollars you
[5:07] have to give, and then you get some
[5:09] information about God.
[5:11] But that see, it's a
[5:12] postmortem God.
[5:14] After death.
[5:16] It's a journey in time, according to
[5:18] them. But Vedanta cannot be a journey in
[5:21] time, because what we are talking about
[5:23] is not only then, but it's now. It
[5:26] always is. Brahman always is. Our real
[5:27] nature always is. So, it's available to
[5:30] us not only here, but now.
[5:33] So, it's not a journey in time. You
[5:34] don't have to wait.
[5:38] And
[5:40] Vedanta also does not speak about a
[5:42] journey from yourself to something else.
[5:46] Usually in theistic religions, God
[5:48] portrayed as an other, a divine other.
[5:52] But it's not even that. In Vedanta, it's
[5:53] ourselves. You are that, tat tvam asi.
[5:57] So, it's it's within ourselves. It's our
[5:58] real nature.
[6:00] So, it's not a journey in time. It's not
[6:01] a journey from one place to another, not
[6:03] a journey in space. It's not a journey
[6:05] from ourselves to something else,
[6:06] either.
[6:08] Vedanta says Brahman, the ultimate
[6:10] reality, is everywhere, therefore here,
[6:13] all the time, therefore now.
[6:15] And it is you. It's available wherever
[6:17] you are, whatever you are, it's
[6:18] available to us.
[6:20] So, what kind of a journey is uh
[6:23] Vedanta?
[6:24] Spiritual journey. What kind of a
[6:26] spiritual journey? If it's not a journey
[6:28] in space, if it's not a journey in time,
[6:30] if it's not a journey from ourselves to
[6:32] the to an other,
[6:35] it's a journey from ignorance to
[6:37] knowledge.
[6:39] From not knowing to knowing, from not
[6:41] realizing to realizing, from not seeing
[6:43] to seeing.
[6:46] Enlighten has these two aspects.
[6:49] One,
[6:50] the word light,
[6:52] is this is light. Anything that
[6:54] illumines something which was hidden is
[6:56] light. So, Vedanta is a light in that
[6:59] sense. It illumines our real nature,
[7:00] which is as yet hidden. We don't know it
[7:02] yet. We don't realize it yet. And that's
[7:05] revealed by Vedanta. So, it's
[7:06] enlightening in that sense. But light
[7:09] has another meaning, also. Light, you
[7:10] know, not heavy.
[7:12] Light.
[7:13] So, this knowledge makes us light. It it
[7:16] relieves us of the burden of samsara, of
[7:19] the world. It will give us freedom.
[7:23] Enlightenment in both these senses.
[7:26] And it's a good fit for what we will do
[7:28] in the morning sessions and in the
[7:30] afternoon session. In the morning
[7:31] session, enlighten in the sense of
[7:34] seeing for the first first time who or
[7:36] what we are, in the sense of insight,
[7:38] knowledge, realization.
[7:40] And in the afternoon session,
[7:42] enlightenment in the sense of
[7:44] freeing us from the burden of samsara.
[7:47] Same knowledge will free us from the
[7:48] burden of samsara.
[7:51] If you don't have to go anywhere for it.
[7:54] If you don't have to wait for it.
[7:56] If it is you yourself, then this path is
[8:00] direct.
[8:01] It is effortless. How much effort does
[8:04] it take to be yourself? If you have to
[8:06] change, it takes effort.
[8:08] But just to be yourself?
[8:10] Doesn't take any effort. So it's
[8:12] effortless. And indeed, that which is
[8:14] effortless must be instantaneous also.
[8:16] Because if it's right here, right now,
[8:17] it must be instantaneous.
[8:20] Effortless, instantaneous, direct,
[8:23] readily available.
[8:25] We feel, "Ah, I want some of that.
[8:27] That's really great."
[8:29] The fine print is there.
[8:32] It really cannot shortcut anything, but
[8:34] we'll see. The one we'll do now in the
[8:36] in the morning is direct, effortless.
[8:38] The one we will do in the afternoon, all
[8:40] the effort and hard work is there.
[8:42] And both are necessary. All right.
[8:45] So, because it's a journey from
[8:48] ignorance to knowledge, because it's a
[8:50] path of knowledge, of realizing, um
[8:54] that's why the text is important.
[8:56] And the text conveys knowledge. There
[8:58] are two kinds of religious or spiritual
[9:00] texts. One kind conveys an insight. It
[9:04] doesn't ask us to do anything. The other
[9:05] kind is do's and don'ts.
[9:08] So in the Vedas, the sources of Advaita
[9:11] Vedanta, the Vedas, there are two kinds
[9:12] of texts. There is the ritualistic part
[9:15] of the Vedas, with all kinds of
[9:17] observances. There were the fire
[9:19] rituals, in Sanskrit yagna, which means
[9:21] a fire ritual.
[9:23] Uh performances, rituals to be done.
[9:27] Life, what is good and bad. Do this,
[9:29] don't do that. That's the action kind of
[9:31] teaching.
[9:32] But there's another kind of teaching
[9:34] which doesn't tell us to do anything. It
[9:36] tells us something about reality.
[9:38] Especially tells us something about our
[9:39] reality, who or what we are.
[9:42] And the Vedanta is that second kind of
[9:44] teaching.
[9:46] There are do's and don'ts, but they all
[9:48] build up to they're not commandments in
[9:51] the sense that live your life in this
[9:52] way and don't live in that way. But we
[9:54] might ask why? Because they will all
[9:56] build up to that insight to show us
[9:58] something which we are. So right now the
[10:00] teaching we're going to take a look at
[10:02] is that second kind of teaching which
[10:04] gives us an insight into who or what we
[10:07] are.
[10:08] As I said yesterday, you can look at the
[10:11] entire ocean of Vedantic texts and pick
[10:14] like the ocean you drink from anywhere
[10:15] it's salty. Vedantic texts from anywhere
[10:18] you drink it will it will you take it it
[10:20] will tell you the same thing, the same
[10:22] teaching.
[10:23] That who are we, what is all this, and
[10:26] how to live it, how to manifest it.
[10:28] But the text which I've chosen is one
[10:30] from the central texts of Vedanta. The
[10:33] central texts of Vedanta, the
[10:34] Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the
[10:36] Brahma Sutras.
[10:38] So Upanishads are the source of Veda of
[10:41] Vedanta. In fact, one definition of
[10:43] Vedanta, the textual definition of
[10:44] Vedanta is Upanishad. Upanishads are a
[10:47] set of texts which you find in the in
[10:50] the Vedas. So they are at the source of
[10:52] the philosophical source of Hinduism are
[10:55] the Upanishads.
[10:57] And based on that there is a text which
[10:59] is much more well known. In fact, one
[11:01] text which is associated with Vedanta
[11:03] with Hinduism is the Bhagavad Gita.
[11:06] Where um Sri Krishna, who's the teacher,
[11:10] we regard Sri Krishna as an incarnation
[11:11] of God,
[11:12] and Sri Krishna teaches the his student
[11:16] Arjuna,
[11:18] who's a warrior, and he's being taught
[11:21] Vedanta.
[11:22] So the Bhagavad Gita is easily the most
[11:24] popular text associated with Hinduism.
[11:27] From the Bhagavad Gita, which has 18
[11:28] chapters and 700 verses, is selected a
[11:31] few verses from the 13th chapter.
[11:34] So,
[11:36] just a few verses and you have a
[11:38] handout.
[11:43] Two pages.
[11:45] Yes, one on this side, one on the other
[11:47] side.
[11:49] Yeah.
[11:51] And you have
[11:52] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 verses
[11:57] with the
[12:00] English transliteration and translation.
[12:05] Verses 2 and 3.
[12:08] So, there's a little mystery about these
[12:09] 2 and 3. You might wonder what was the
[12:10] first verse then.
[12:13] Yes, the first verse is six a set of six
[12:16] questions that Arjuna asks Krishna.
[12:19] And the rest of the chapter is an answer
[12:21] to those six questions. Now, the
[12:23] peculiar thing about this 13th chapter
[12:25] is there's a dispute regarding the
[12:26] number of verses.
[12:28] In some books, some Bhagavad Gita, you
[12:30] will find that the first verse is not
[12:32] there.
[12:33] The that that chapter 13 in that book
[12:36] will start with this verse. So, what is
[12:38] called what is number two here is
[12:40] actually number one in those editions of
[12:42] the Bhagavad Gita. Straightaway Sri
[12:44] Krishna starts teaching. But sometime
[12:46] someone at some point might have thought
[12:47] this is not logical. There must have
[12:49] been questions at the beginning and
[12:50] someone might have intro- might have, we
[12:52] don't know, might have introduced those
[12:54] questions.
[12:55] So, that sometimes constitutes the first
[12:57] verse.
[12:59] That uh Prakritim Purusham Chaiva
[13:02] Kshetram Kshetrajnam Eva Cha Etad
[13:04] Vediditum Ichchhami Jnyanam Gneyam Cha
[13:06] Keshava. Oh Krishna, Arjuna asks.
[13:10] By the way, I will use Sanskrit is
[13:11] Sanskrit here. Don't worry about it.
[13:13] Everything is translated. Everything is
[13:15] translated. You won't lose anything even
[13:17] if you don't know Sanskrit. But
[13:18] sometimes nice to hear the sound of the
[13:21] ancient language. That's why I use it.
[13:24] And also it's easier for me to teach if
[13:26] I have got it in mind original words.
[13:28] Um six questions Arjuna asks.
[13:32] Prakriti and Purusha, what is what is
[13:33] nature and what is consciousness? Nature
[13:35] and spirit, oh Krishna.
[13:38] Basically, nature means all of this,
[13:40] including our bodies. It's all nature.
[13:43] Prakriti, nature, mother nature, it's
[13:45] all this.
[13:46] And who are we? We are sentient beings,
[13:48] conscious beings. So, this is the
[13:50] question of Arjuna, what is the the
[13:53] nature of nature?
[13:55] What is all this?
[13:56] And what are we? Most fundamental
[13:58] questions.
[14:00] And the same thing he asks in another
[14:01] way, using more technical terms.
[14:04] What is the field
[14:06] and what is the field knower?
[14:08] Field means all this.
[14:10] The whole universe is the field. And
[14:12] field knower? You. I, the sentient being
[14:15] who's experiencing all this. You can see
[14:17] it's the same question. Prakriti and
[14:19] Purusha, nature and and spirit, field
[14:21] and field knower. Instead of
[14:23] spirit, he uses the word field knower.
[14:25] Instead of nature, universe, he uses the
[14:28] word field. Field and field knower.
[14:31] And then he goes on further to ask, what
[14:33] is knowledge and what is to be known?
[14:36] What exactly constitutes knowledge and
[14:38] what do we have to know? Jnanam jneyam.
[14:40] Six questions.
[14:42] So, six questions and the 13th chapter
[14:44] is an answer to that.
[14:48] And now Krishna starts with the answer.
[14:51] Every day when we start, we will chant
[14:53] the verses. The morning we'll chant
[14:56] verses two and three and afternoon we'll
[14:59] chant these verses from eight to 12.
[15:04] So, those who like, you can repeat after
[15:06] me if you like.
[15:08] And I'll also read out the English
[15:09] translation.
[15:12] Shri Bhagavan uvacha.
[15:14] Shri Bhagavan uvacha.
[15:18] Idam shariram Kaunteya.
[15:21] Idam shariram Kaunteya.
[15:25] Kshetram
[15:47] >> The supreme divine lord said Arjuna,
[15:51] this body is termed as kshetra, the
[15:53] field of activities. And the one who
[15:55] knows this body is called kshetrajna,
[15:57] the knower of the field, by the sages
[16:00] who discern the truth about both.
[16:33] O sign of Bharata, I am also the knower
[16:36] of all these individual fields of
[16:38] activity. The understanding of the body
[16:40] as the fields of activity field of
[16:42] activities and the soul and God are then
[16:45] as the knowers of the field, this I hold
[16:47] to be the true knowledge.
[16:50] All right.
[16:52] In these two verses, basically the
[16:54] central insights of Vedanta are packed
[16:56] into these two verses. Very nice, very
[16:58] important two verses.
[17:00] And what we will do in the morning
[17:02] session
[17:04] and in the the two sessions in the
[17:06] morning
[17:07] we will do is explore this. We will do
[17:09] it three times.
[17:11] Today, tomorrow, and day after. Each
[17:14] time we will take a new approach to it.
[17:16] Understanding it deeply and more
[17:18] powerfully.
[17:20] These are different techniques in
[17:21] Vedanta just to unpack this these
[17:23] verses.
[17:25] What has been said here in these two
[17:27] verses?
[17:31] Remember
[17:33] the
[17:34] thing I quoted yesterday from
[17:35] Nisargadatta. Knowledge shows me I am
[17:38] nothing. Love shows me I am everything.
[17:42] Vedanta is to establish this one
[17:45] non-dual reality. There is one existence
[17:47] consciousness bliss which is appearing
[17:49] as the many. We only see the many right
[17:51] now and that's our problem. We don't see
[17:53] the underlying oneness, the underlying
[17:55] non-duality. Vedanta wants to show us
[17:58] that.
[17:59] The way it does is first first step in
[18:03] Vedanta
[18:04] asking the question who am I or what am
[18:06] I. Often we use who am I, but it leads
[18:10] to a confusion in our modern period
[18:12] because who am I is a big question for
[18:14] us. I'm out to discover who am I. Why
[18:16] did you drop out of college? Young
[18:17] people go, "I'm out to discover who am
[18:19] I." And basically the answer is in maybe
[18:21] I'm a guitarist or I am a
[18:24] you know, what kind of person am I? None
[18:25] of this is meant here. None of this is
[18:27] meant.
[18:29] Not what my profession should be, not
[18:31] even what kind of person am I, not not
[18:33] what my talents are. No, no, no. Those
[18:36] are all good questions.
[18:38] But between you and your parents or your
[18:40] counselors or whoever it is. But Vedanta
[18:42] is more interested in what are we
[18:44] exactly?
[18:46] What exactly? What kind of entity are
[18:48] we? What's our reality
[18:50] at the most fundamental level? That's
[18:52] the question.
[18:54] And remember the promise is if we
[18:56] discover that
[18:58] it will solve our problems
[19:00] at a very deep level, at the
[19:01] philosophical existential level.
[19:03] The payoff is very great. Vedanta says
[19:06] what's the goal the aim of all this the
[19:08] project
[19:09] atyantika dukha nivritti paramananda
[19:12] prapti in Sanskrit. A complete cessation
[19:15] of sorrow
[19:16] and the attainment of lasting deep
[19:18] lasting fulfillment.
[19:20] Peace and fulfillment. That's the goal.
[19:23] Biggest goal. There can't be any higher
[19:25] goal than that.
[19:26] How do I overcome sorrow, suffering,
[19:28] limitation, unhappiness? And how do I
[19:31] attain lasting peace? And the answer is
[19:33] remarkable.
[19:35] You have to know who or what you are.
[19:37] That means the answer to these questions
[19:39] is already there with us. Because I am
[19:41] here.
[19:42] And my problem is not because I'm
[19:45] unhappy. Not because I'm not rich.
[19:49] Not because I'm not healthy.
[19:52] Not because I'm not young.
[19:54] Not because I'm not famous.
[19:57] Now, these are we think these are the
[19:58] causes of my unhappiness. And if somehow
[20:00] I can if I can become rich enough or
[20:02] healthy enough or, you know, have lots
[20:04] of Facebook friends, then I'll be happy.
[20:07] But obviously that won't work. Look
[20:08] around.
[20:10] You see the richest people, the most
[20:11] famous people, more unhappy.
[20:14] So, that doesn't work.
[20:16] What
[20:17] works is, according to Vedanta, it will
[20:20] if we know who or what we truly are. It
[20:22] will solve our problems. So, biggest
[20:24] payoff
[20:25] The biggest payoff comes from
[20:27] self-knowledge, knowledge of who or what
[20:29] we are.
[20:30] So, the first step in Vedanta is to
[20:33] correct our error. Because when I say
[20:35] who am I or what am I, we immediately
[20:38] say I know that.
[20:40] Big deal. That's what you want to tell
[20:41] me. I know that. It's on my biodata.
[20:43] It's on my passport. It's on my
[20:46] you know, about me Facebook, my my
[20:48] website. It's
[20:49] No, that's uh your story.
[20:52] That's who we think we are. The story of
[20:55] this personality.
[20:57] Now, this that Vedanta says you are not
[20:59] that.
[20:59] So, what are we not and what am I?
[21:01] That's the first part of the Vedantic
[21:03] inquiry.
[21:05] And the second part
[21:06] what am I actually? What am I not?
[21:09] Discovering what I am and that I am is
[21:11] everything.
[21:13] That is the second part. And it's the
[21:16] the unity, the oneness of the universe,
[21:18] which will be shown to us.
[21:20] That is the second part.
[21:21] Um so that's that's what's there in
[21:23] these two verses. If you look at these
[21:25] two verses, again, match it with the
[21:27] Sarga Datta.
[21:29] That um knowledge shows me I am nothing
[21:31] in the sense I'm not the body, not the
[21:33] mind, what I thought I was. And love
[21:35] shows me I am everything, I'm one with
[21:37] the universe.
[21:39] In these two verses, what has been said?
[21:43] Krishna says to Arjuna,
[21:45] he says,
[21:47] "These bodies
[21:49] are called the field.
[21:52] And the one who experiences this body,
[21:54] knows this body, experiences this body,
[21:56] feels this body from within,
[21:59] that one is called the knower of the
[22:01] field."
[22:02] Seems very simple.
[22:04] And you, this body? Yes, okay. This call
[22:07] this the field.
[22:08] And you, the one who are who's
[22:09] experiencing this body from yourself,
[22:11] within yourself, I am this
[22:14] here I am.
[22:15] That one is called the knower of the
[22:17] field.
[22:18] That seems to be very simple.
[22:21] But the consequences are immense.
[22:24] Vedanta begins here.
[22:27] What he means by that is
[22:29] if
[22:31] I am the knower of the field and the
[22:33] body is the field,
[22:35] the knower and the known, the subject
[22:37] and the object, the seer and the seen,
[22:39] they cannot be the same thing.
[22:42] See, always the subject is different
[22:44] from the object. The knower is different
[22:47] from the known. This is this bouquet of
[22:49] flowers, the vase, it is the known. I
[22:51] can see it, I can touch it, I can smell
[22:53] it.
[22:55] So this is known and it is different
[22:57] from me, the knower.
[23:00] The known is always different. In
[23:01] grammar also, subject and object are
[23:03] different. You can't have the same
[23:05] thing. In philosophy also,
[23:06] self-reflexivity is not allowed. Subject
[23:09] and object are different. Consciousness
[23:11] and its objects are different. They're
[23:12] different from each each other. They're
[23:14] distinct.
[23:16] So, okay, I get it.
[23:18] What's the point?
[23:20] The point is here is the most amazing
[23:22] thing.
[23:23] When we look at the bodies, generally we
[23:25] refer to the body as
[23:27] I, me, myself. This is I.
[23:30] If we ask you to point out
[23:33] who are you, you will say and tell your
[23:35] name and your background, your
[23:36] qualifications, nationality, gender,
[23:38] whatever it is. Where is the point
[23:39] yourself out? Show me yourself. We'll
[23:42] always say this.
[23:44] I am here. So, we take the body to be
[23:46] ourselves. The most obvious. Nobody
[23:48] questions it. And Krishna starts by
[23:50] questioning that.
[23:53] He points out, you cannot be the body.
[23:56] Why?
[23:58] Because you experience the body.
[24:00] What?
[24:01] Of course, I experience the body. Big
[24:03] deal. So?
[24:05] Because you experience the body, the
[24:07] body must be an object of your
[24:09] experience. It's a thing which we
[24:11] experience.
[24:13] It's a form which we see.
[24:16] Uh it's a sound in When you
[24:18] close your eyes and listen, maybe you
[24:20] can hear your tummy rumbling or even
[24:21] your heartbeat.
[24:22] Sound which we hear. It's a touch.
[24:25] It's a smell. This body is something
[24:29] known by the senses. Something
[24:31] understood and remembered by the mind.
[24:33] It's an object.
[24:36] So?
[24:38] But all these are objects and none of
[24:40] them I say I am that. I am this one.
[24:44] We even for the clothes which I'm
[24:46] wearing, I don't say I am this shirt. I
[24:48] am this cloth. We don't say that.
[24:51] It's ridiculous. And the reason why we
[24:53] say we do not say that is these are
[24:55] things. These are objects. I'm not a
[24:58] thing.
[24:59] I'm not an object. I am the subject. I
[25:02] am the knower. I am the experiencer. I
[25:05] am the seer. I am conscious of What am I
[25:08] conscious of? Objects.
[25:11] I am that which is conscious. I'm not
[25:13] that which I'm conscious of.
[25:16] Therefore, I am not an object.
[25:19] And Krishna says, "All these objects,
[25:22] this entire material universe, it's the
[25:25] field." But specifically says, "This
[25:28] body is the field." Why is the body the
[25:31] field? Because you start with the body
[25:34] about things in the world and other
[25:36] bodies also. I don't think I am those.
[25:41] I don't feel that. I feel they are
[25:43] different from me.
[25:45] Even the clothes are different from me.
[25:47] Even the glasses, if I wear, are
[25:49] different from me. But with the skin
[25:52] a confusion starts.
[25:55] I know it's an object. I know it is
[25:58] something. And yet also I say, "I am
[26:00] it."
[26:02] Do you see? We must appreciate the
[26:03] problem first. It's a very basic
[26:05] fundamental problem. We automatically
[26:09] feel we are the body.
[26:12] And yet we now understand, we know yes,
[26:14] it is also an object.
[26:16] And Krishna is very
[26:18] categorical here. If it's an object, it
[26:21] can't be you.
[26:23] If you are the experiencer of the
[26:24] object, then you cannot be the object.
[26:28] The object is the field. This is the
[26:30] field and you are the knower of the
[26:31] field. The knower of the field and the
[26:34] object cannot be the same thing.
[26:36] Whatever is known is an object. And the
[26:39] knower is the field knower. Whatever is
[26:42] known is the object, the field, and the
[26:44] knower is the field knower. In Sanskrit,
[26:47] kshetra means field. Kshetrajna means
[26:50] field knower.
[26:51] And Krishna says, "Make distinction very
[26:54] clear in your mind."
[26:57] And
[26:58] we will see as we investigate this is a
[27:01] crucial distinction and we will
[27:02] investigate it today, tomorrow, day
[27:04] after each with a more powerful
[27:05] technique.
[27:07] This is answering who am I or what am I?
[27:09] How is it answering it? Because we
[27:11] thought we knew who am I, body.
[27:14] Mind.
[27:15] This is who I am.
[27:16] And Krishna is showing us, "No, even
[27:18] bodies and minds are objects. They are
[27:21] part of the field.
[27:23] You are not the field."
[27:28] You are the knower of the field,
[27:29] experience of the field.
[27:32] You are that which experiences. What
[27:34] experiences? Consciousness itself.
[27:37] So, you are consciousness itself, light,
[27:39] awareness itself.
[27:42] And then the question will arise,
[27:45] "All right, so I am not the body. I'm
[27:47] not even the mind because these are
[27:48] experienced. I am awareness. I am
[27:51] consciousness."
[27:53] Now, the question arises,
[27:55] "In all these bodies,
[27:58] in this body I am a consciousness, I am
[28:00] awareness.
[28:01] But in all these bodies,
[28:03] then there is a separate consciousness,
[28:05] separate awareness. Bodies are many, I
[28:07] can see.
[28:08] Our minds are also many. We are all
[28:10] different people.
[28:12] But the consciousness which is
[28:14] experiencing this body mind, the
[28:16] consciousness which is experiencing that
[28:18] body mind, are they different
[28:19] consciousnesses
[28:22] or one consciousness?"
[28:25] And what about God? Religion,
[28:26] spirituality, you didn't mention God at
[28:28] all.
[28:29] So, two questions will arise.
[28:31] In this scheme of field and field
[28:33] knower, how many field fields are many,
[28:35] we can see.
[28:37] How many field knowers are there? How
[28:39] many consciousnesses? How many selves?
[28:41] How many I's?
[28:43] I I I
[28:45] For you me you you you, but for each of
[28:47] us there's only one I, and everybody
[28:48] else is a you.
[28:50] So, how many selves, how many of us are
[28:52] here?
[28:54] Bodies, many, we can count.
[28:56] Minds, personalities, many, we can we
[28:58] can experience.
[28:59] But, the self beyond the body mind,
[29:02] knower of the field, how many? And
[29:04] second,
[29:05] question about God.
[29:08] In religion, question about God, where
[29:09] is God in all of this?
[29:11] And in the second verse, or the third
[29:13] verse in this list, Krishna answers that
[29:16] both of these questions in half a verse,
[29:18] in a short in a half sentence, actually.
[29:21] He says in Sanskrit, "Kṣetrajñaṃ cāpi
[29:25] māṃ viddhi sarvakṣetreṣu bhārata."
[29:28] He says,
[29:30] "In all these fields, in all these body
[29:33] mind complexes, in all these millions
[29:35] and billions of people and other
[29:37] sentient beings, there is only one
[29:40] consciousness.
[29:42] There's only one light,
[29:44] one awareness.
[29:46] And I am that." He says, "Oh Arjuna, I I
[29:50] means Krishna.
[29:51] I am that one consciousness in all
[29:53] beings." Remember, in the Gita, Krishna
[29:56] is an incarnation of God.
[29:58] So, both questions have been answered
[30:00] here. How many are here? How many
[30:02] consciousnesses? One consciousness.
[30:05] I think it was Schrödinger who said,
[30:07] "Consciousness is that singular which
[30:08] has no plural."
[30:11] These early quantum theorists, they're
[30:13] very interested in Vedanta. Very
[30:15] interested.
[30:18] Schrödinger, Heisenberg.
[30:23] I was reading a very
[30:25] evocative,
[30:27] touching, and scary description from
[30:30] Schrödinger's life, the the quantum
[30:32] theorist Schrödinger.
[30:34] After the First World War,
[30:38] he goes back to
[30:42] um
[30:43] Am I thinking of Schrödinger or von
[30:45] Heisenberg?
[30:46] He was in the army.
[30:48] First World War, Austro-Hungarian
[30:50] Empire. He goes back to Austria,
[30:53] Vienna. And at that time the
[30:55] Austro-Hungarian Empire had just
[30:56] collapsed. There was a lot of struggles,
[30:59] hungers, and you know, and even in the
[31:01] capital city in Vienna.
[31:02] So,
[31:06] Schrödinger says
[31:07] that
[31:08] it could be von Heisenberg. I'm making
[31:11] making making a mistake. But they were
[31:12] almost close. Heisenberg was younger
[31:15] and Schrödinger was older. I think it's
[31:17] Schrödinger. So, Schrödinger says,
[31:19] "There was hunger. There were food
[31:21] riots." And once he said, at that time
[31:23] he's reading Vedanta.
[31:25] And I've never seen such a
[31:27] scary description of Vedanta.
[31:29] Evocative, powerful description. He
[31:31] says, "I saw a policeman come on a
[31:33] horseback and supervising the
[31:34] distribution of food and the hungry
[31:37] hungry people."
[31:39] "And a crowd of women descended on the
[31:41] policeman, pulled him down from the
[31:43] horse, and beat him up. And they killed
[31:45] the horse and chopped the horse into
[31:47] pieces to take away the flesh back home
[31:48] to feed their children."
[31:50] And he says he stood there stunned to
[31:53] see the great the the death of the great
[31:55] beast
[31:56] and the bleeding heart of the horse
[31:59] being pulled out. In that
[32:02] big heart and the women hands covered
[32:04] with blood and shouting and screaming,
[32:07] he felt one consciousness everywhere.
[32:11] In the dying beast,
[32:13] in the hungry in the desperate women,
[32:17] in the bloodied heart of that beast
[32:19] being pulled out. He's standing there
[32:20] stunned, shocked, scared.
[32:23] He says it is somehow it is one being.
[32:27] In the dead, in the living,
[32:29] in the consumer, in the consumed, eater
[32:32] and the eaten.
[32:34] These are actually verses from the
[32:35] Upanishads, but in such a graphic form
[32:37] I've never read it.
[32:39] But he felt normally when we feel
[32:42] spirituality, religion, all very nice
[32:44] when things are fine.
[32:46] When things are horrible,
[32:49] our usual question is, "Where is God
[32:51] here? Where is your spirituality? Where
[32:53] is Vedanta or Buddhism? Where is it?"
[32:55] No, no, no, right there.
[32:58] Right there. Look at it. Don't shut your
[32:59] eyes to it.
[33:01] If it is true, if it is everywhere, it
[33:02] must be there also. If it is all the
[33:04] time, it must be in the worst of times
[33:06] also.
[33:07] If you can find it in the worst of time,
[33:09] in the worst of places, you can find it
[33:11] everywhere.
[33:12] I think that's one of the reasons why
[33:14] the Gita was taught in the battlefield,
[33:15] the worst place.
[33:17] The worst activity, human activity, of
[33:20] killing.
[33:21] If one can still retain spirituality in
[33:23] the midst of that,
[33:26] then one can have it everywhere.
[33:28] You'll find when things are good, you'll
[33:29] find it easily there. I remember when
[33:31] COVID started in New York,
[33:34] it was one of the worst hit cities of
[33:35] the world. At that time,
[33:38] um
[33:39] somebody asked me, I was giving a talk.
[33:42] Somebody asked me, "At this time also we
[33:43] have to think about Vedanta?"
[33:47] And I said,
[33:50] "If Vedanta is not useful to us at this
[33:52] time, then it is not worth it.
[33:54] Vedanta is meant for this time, in the
[33:56] time of crisis.
[33:59] Otherwise, you think when everything is
[34:00] fine, I'll go once in a week and listen
[34:04] to a nice philosophical talk. No, it
[34:06] should be available to us." Vivekananda
[34:07] says,
[34:09] "That spirituality or religion or
[34:11] philosophy
[34:12] which promises
[34:14] heaven after death, but cannot wipe the
[34:16] tears of the widow, or lift a piece of
[34:19] bread to the hungry mouth man's mouth, I
[34:21] do not care for such a philosophy or
[34:22] spirituality."
[34:25] So Vedanta must be applicable, useful to
[34:27] us right now.
[34:29] One consciousness. Krishna says, "I am
[34:32] the one knower of the field in all
[34:34] fields. Fields are many.
[34:36] Bodies are many. Persons are many. Minds
[34:39] are many. Beyond body and mind is one
[34:42] consciousness.
[34:44] And then Krishna identifies the God of
[34:47] Vedanta. What is the definition of God?
[34:48] What exactly is God? It is this one
[34:51] consciousness in the universe.
[34:53] It exists beyond the universe also, but
[34:55] in and through the universe. That just
[34:58] as we right now in our state we think of
[35:00] ourselves as this body.
[35:03] There is a being
[35:05] a consciousness which thinks of the
[35:06] universe as its body.
[35:10] I am all this. And we are all one in
[35:13] that that one consciousness.
[35:15] So Krishna identifies God
[35:17] and the knower of the field, one knower
[35:20] of the field in all if you truly know
[35:21] it. Right now we feel many fields and
[35:24] many knowers of the field. Krishna says
[35:26] there's one.
[35:27] Which means
[35:29] and a corollary, some implication we can
[35:32] draw from this is that um
[35:35] if we are all one consciousness, in in
[35:38] that sense we all must be one being.
[35:41] And this is also the basis of ethics
[35:45] of right and wrong, good and bad.
[35:47] Why must I be unselfish?
[35:51] Why must I be kind?
[35:53] Why must I be you know, do I must not
[35:56] hurt others?
[35:58] Why not? Why must I be nonviolent? Why?
[36:01] Why not be greedy? Why not be violent?
[36:04] Why not be possessive?
[36:06] Everything for I, me, myself. Because
[36:08] the answer is
[36:10] I there's only one I in all beings. We
[36:13] don't see that.
[36:16] So when I say I everything is for I, me,
[36:19] myself, we have a wrong idea of the I, a
[36:21] very limited, very imperfect, um
[36:25] troubled, disturbed idea of who I am.
[36:27] It's only this being. And therefore I
[36:29] want to grab everything for myself. The
[36:31] more I begin to realize I am in the life
[36:33] of all beings.
[36:36] Then ethics will come directly.
[36:39] Love will come directly from that.
[36:41] Oneness
[36:43] just as I take care of this body, this
[36:46] person as I I have to I take care of
[36:49] myself. Then myself will become all.
[36:53] And from that ethics comes.
[36:56] You know the golden rule of ethics
[36:59] of good and bad. The golden rule of
[37:00] ethics in all religions is one common
[37:02] idea is that to to treat others as you
[37:06] would have them treat you.
[37:09] It's found in all religions. In
[37:10] different ways it's found.
[37:12] In the United Nations if you go in New
[37:13] York headquarters, in the third floor
[37:16] there's a big rock inscription.
[37:19] The golden rule of all religions is to
[37:21] treat others as you would have them
[37:22] treat. As you want to be treated by
[37:24] others, you should treat others also in
[37:26] the same way.
[37:28] Because we are the generally apply a
[37:29] different standard to myself and to
[37:31] others.
[37:32] So same standard.
[37:34] Now this golden rule
[37:36] Vedanta gives you the answer why.
[37:38] Because one can question the golden
[37:40] rule. Why should I treat others as I
[37:42] treat myself? Because myself I am me. I
[37:45] am I. I am myself. And others are
[37:48] others.
[37:49] So why should I treat them like myself?
[37:52] And the answer in Vedanta you now find.
[37:53] Do you see the the logic this this logic
[37:56] here? The logic here is the others are
[37:58] not others.
[38:00] And myself is not myself this one.
[38:04] Myself and others are oneself.
[38:07] Vedanta will show us that.
[38:08] And that's why logic makes sense. That's
[38:11] why ethics makes sense. That's why this
[38:13] is the logic beneath underlying the
[38:16] golden rule of all religions.
[38:21] That's just an implication. Just by the
[38:23] way.
[38:24] So, Krishna answers both questions in
[38:27] that
[38:29] one
[38:31] half a sentence. He says in all beings
[38:34] that consciousness which is there, which
[38:35] is the knower of the field, it's one
[38:38] knower of the field. It's not different.
[38:40] The difference is caused by bodies.
[38:42] Difference is caused by minds,
[38:43] personalities. But if we truly know who
[38:46] or what we are, we would find I am one
[38:48] in all beings.
[38:50] And the universe is also one with us.
[38:52] This a little bit of Vedanta you have to
[38:54] see. In Vedanta this universe, just like
[38:56] all religions which are theistic, they
[38:58] say God created the universe. In Vedanta
[39:01] um
[39:02] God projected the universe out of
[39:05] himself, herself, itself. In Vedanta it
[39:07] could be.
[39:09] And you take your pick. Gender is not
[39:11] important. So,
[39:13] that reality it projected the universe
[39:15] out of it. So, what is this universe? It
[39:17] is nothing other than divine.
[39:20] So,
[39:21] in that case, if we are that one
[39:23] consciousness, you are one with God
[39:25] there and the universe is also one with
[39:27] you. And non-duality is established.
[39:29] This is just sort of the outline. We
[39:31] will see this in three different ways,
[39:32] today, tomorrow, and the after.
[39:34] As we go deeper.
[39:37] Basic idea. I've given this. This is the
[39:39] basic idea.
[39:41] Now, let's go deeper today. The first
[39:43] approach which we'll take up today,
[39:45] second approach tomorrow, and third
[39:47] approach the after tomorrow to see what
[39:49] who am I or what am I. That I am this
[39:52] consciousness. I am the knower of the
[39:54] field.
[39:55] The first approach is called
[39:58] Drig Drishya Viveka in Sanskrit, the
[40:01] discernment of the seer and the seen.
[40:05] You can see a theme here. Field and
[40:07] field knower, subject and object,
[40:09] consciousness and matter, seer and the
[40:10] seen.
[40:18] This path we will take it up now.
[40:21] Before I jump into it,
[40:28] there are three stages to
[40:31] um
[40:33] to this practice.
[40:35] You remember I yesterday I said hearing,
[40:37] reflecting, meditating.
[40:39] Let me make it even simpler. Hearing,
[40:42] reflecting, meditating. Three questions
[40:44] we must answer.
[40:46] What did he say? What did the text say?
[40:48] That's hearing.
[40:49] If I can answer that, I have heard.
[40:51] If I cannot answer that, I have to go
[40:53] back to hearing again.
[40:56] I don't I shouldn't go back to
[40:57] meditating. I shouldn't go back to
[40:58] argument. I first have to go back to the
[41:00] teaching.
[41:02] Without listening, what will I
[41:04] argue about? Without without downloading
[41:07] that information, what will I meditate
[41:09] about about? So, if the first answer is
[41:12] what did he say or what did the text
[41:13] say?
[41:14] That's one. I should be able to answer
[41:16] that. Number two is do I get it?
[41:20] Cuz I may hear it.
[41:22] I may know what the text said, but maybe
[41:23] I don't understand it.
[41:25] So, do I get it?
[41:27] If I don't get it If I get it, if it's
[41:29] clear to me, done. Second stage is
[41:31] completed. If I don't get it, then
[41:33] hearing again won't work. I have to
[41:35] think about it. What is it that I don't
[41:37] get? I have to argue about it. I have to
[41:38] question the teacher. I have to talk to
[41:40] other students until I get it. Study
[41:43] myself until I get it. So, second stage
[41:45] is completed when I say I get it.
[41:47] Third stage
[41:50] I've heard it. I understand it. Is it a
[41:53] fact? Is it real?
[41:57] Because something sometimes something I
[41:58] may get it, but it's still theoretical
[42:00] for me. I I I say sometimes people
[42:02] complain, "Yeah, I get it
[42:03] intellectually."
[42:05] But is it a living fact for me? Because
[42:07] Vedanta claims it's a living fact
[42:09] already.
[42:10] You are that already. So, is it a living
[42:12] fact for me.
[42:13] Do I really understand what is it to be
[42:16] I am consciousness, I am awareness?
[42:19] Or do I still feel the living fact is
[42:21] that I am this body?
[42:23] I'm this person.
[42:24] That That answer, that will become clear
[42:27] through meditation.
[42:29] Which converts my understanding
[42:32] into a living reality.
[42:36] The third question is, is it real?
[42:39] And one technique of keeping it real
[42:42] Americans have a phrase, keep it real.
[42:44] One technique of keeping it real
[42:47] is to see, is to observe, is to stick to
[42:50] reality.
[42:51] I give this example a monk told us once,
[42:53] you know,
[42:55] simple idea but very useful in Vedanta.
[42:57] Vedanta is very simple
[42:59] but it's also very powerful and it's
[43:01] also subtle. So, in in Vedanta you have
[43:03] to move very slowly. Don't jump too
[43:06] fast. Move very slowly. Each step must
[43:08] be clear to us. Each step must be What
[43:11] What did he say or what did the text
[43:13] say? Do I get it? And third, is it a
[43:16] fact?
[43:18] So, the way to keep it real, this monk
[43:21] told us,
[43:23] let's suppose you ask a child,
[43:25] what's a nose?
[43:27] What's a nose?
[43:29] The child will never say it is the organ
[43:31] of respiratory and olfactory sense organ
[43:34] unless it's memorized its homework.
[43:36] The child or she or he will will never
[43:38] say that. What will the child point out?
[43:40] This. Nose, this.
[43:42] This is a nose.
[43:44] This is called keeping it real.
[43:47] So, when in Vedanta
[43:49] at every stage, because the question is
[43:51] about ourselves, we are real. I'm here.
[43:54] When the question is about ourselves,
[43:56] just just point to what is being taught.
[44:00] Just point to what is being taught. We
[44:01] talk about the body. The body is the
[44:03] field. Don't think the body Ah, the body
[44:05] is the field. No, no, no. Body.
[44:07] Just like nose,
[44:09] point to it, the body.
[44:11] This is the field.
[44:13] Okay.
[44:14] If you say breath, if Vedanta talks
[44:15] about breath,
[44:17] don't think about all the prana, the
[44:19] force which keeps all bodies living, the
[44:23] which No.
[44:26] This is the breath.
[44:27] Point it out to yourself.
[44:30] When it talks about the mind, because at
[44:32] that time I can't help you help you
[44:33] anymore.
[44:34] Uh body I can point out. Breath I can
[44:37] point out.
[44:39] Mind, we must look inside for. We are
[44:41] all We all have minds. We're thinking
[44:43] all the time. The chattering is going on
[44:45] inside all the time.
[44:46] Memories, desires, questions. When it
[44:49] comes up, ah, that is the mind.
[44:52] Intellect, the power of understanding,
[44:54] knowing. Ah, I see. That is the
[44:56] intellect. Point it out to yourself.
[45:00] So, in this way, if you keep it real,
[45:02] when it comes to the field knower, when
[45:04] it comes to pure consciousness, at that
[45:06] point, it will be much easier to grasp
[45:08] what is being said. Otherwise, what will
[45:10] happen is at one point it will become
[45:12] theoretical.
[45:13] And then we will complain at one point
[45:15] it will become theoretical. And then we
[45:17] will complain,
[45:19] um I understood you
[45:21] intellectually,
[45:23] but it isn't real to me yet. Uh because
[45:25] at some point you let it stop being
[45:27] real.
[45:28] At some point we all went back into our
[45:30] heads thinking about it.
[45:32] That's all right. If something is
[45:33] distant, something is very small, like
[45:36] atoms or superstrings, if something is
[45:38] very distant, like a black hole or a
[45:39] galaxy, that's all right. You have to be
[45:41] in your head. You have to think about
[45:42] it. But what is being pointed out is not
[45:44] distant. It's right here. It's you.
[45:47] So,
[45:48] keep it real. Nose.
[45:54] It's very helpful to come to as close as
[45:57] possible to enlightenment. Some people
[45:59] might become enlightened, who knows?
[46:01] Uh Uh, or some at least become very
[46:02] close to it. At least we understand
[46:04] what's going on then.
[46:06] All right. Let's with that, let's jump
[46:08] into the method. Method, which which
[46:10] method? Method of seer and seen. Seer
[46:13] and seen.
[46:15] I will use a verse from um
[46:19] The meditation we'll do in the second
[46:20] session.
[46:21] I'll use a verse from a text called
[46:24] the method of seer and seen. That's the
[46:26] name of the text, Drig Drishya Viveka,
[46:28] discernment of the seer and the seen.
[46:30] So, a small text written about 600, 700
[46:33] years ago.
[46:35] The first verse is the most important
[46:38] verse of the whole text.
[46:40] I'll recite the verse and
[46:42] give you a translation, then we will
[46:44] explore it.
[47:03] First translation, then we'll explore.
[47:06] Forms are seen, the eyes are the seer.
[47:10] Eyes are seen, the mind is the seer.
[47:12] Mind is seen, witness consciousness is
[47:15] the seer. The witness consciousness is
[47:17] never seen.
[47:18] Just makes four statements. Forms are
[47:21] seen, eyes are the seer. Eyes are seen,
[47:24] mind is the seer. Mind is seen, witness
[47:26] consciousness is the seer. Witness
[47:28] consciousness is never seen.
[47:30] Okay.
[47:35] We will use this principle
[47:37] that the seer and the seen are distinct,
[47:40] separate.
[47:41] Notice,
[47:43] eyes are seeing, the flowers are seen.
[47:45] Flowers and the eyes are distinct,
[47:47] they're separate.
[47:48] In fact, the eyes can see whatever is
[47:51] separate from the eyes.
[47:53] The eyes cannot see themselves. You can
[47:55] You in the mirror and see your eyes. You
[47:56] can take a selfie and see your eyes. But
[47:59] the eyes cannot directly, the way they
[48:00] see this, they cannot directly see
[48:02] themselves.
[48:03] Yeah. So, whatever the eye sees is
[48:05] distinct from the eyes. Using this
[48:07] principle, and this is of course
[48:09] acknowledged in philosophy, in grammar,
[48:11] in epistemology, subject and object must
[48:13] be different. Consciousness and its
[48:15] objects must be different in that sense.
[48:18] So, we start that way.
[48:20] Seer and seen are different.
[48:23] Eyes, the first part says, eyes are the
[48:25] seer and the
[48:29] the forms are seen. Form means like
[48:31] color.
[48:32] This is form.
[48:34] Uh literally, the word Sanskrit word
[48:36] rupa means color, but it's expanded to
[48:38] mean form. Whatever the eyes can see is
[48:40] a form. All of these are forms. The eye
[48:43] see forms.
[48:45] And the forms must be distinct, separate
[48:47] from the eyes. Otherwise, the eyes
[48:48] cannot see them.
[48:49] That's number one. One more thing we
[48:51] notice. Forms are many.
[48:54] Colors are many. Shapes are many. Forms
[48:56] are many. Same pair of eyes sees all of
[48:59] them. The seer is one.
[49:02] The seen are many.
[49:05] Are you with me?
[49:06] Very simple.
[49:08] And the
[49:09] third thing that we notice is the seen
[49:12] keeps changing. The forms and colors and
[49:14] shapes keeps changing. As we go through
[49:16] our day, our eyes see so many different
[49:19] things. They're not only different,
[49:20] they're continuously changing. The eyes
[49:22] are not changing, however.
[49:25] Uh the seer is not changing. The seen
[49:27] are changing. So, let me sum up. Three
[49:29] points I'm making.
[49:31] Keep uh keep this in mind. The eyes and
[49:33] the whatever the eyes are seeing. Keep
[49:35] it real. Actually, don't think about it
[49:36] theoretically. Actually, look at it in
[49:38] the world.
[49:39] The eyes and the colors are different.
[49:43] The seer and seen are different. That's
[49:44] point number one. Number two, the the
[49:46] eyes being the same, the seen are many
[49:49] many many. The seer is one. The seen are
[49:52] many.
[49:53] Number three, the seer remains constant
[49:55] more or less.
[49:57] You might say technically if you want to
[49:59] argue the eyes are moving and the eyes
[50:01] keep changing. Yes, over time, but right
[50:03] now in comparison to this world
[50:06] the seen are changing, the seer is
[50:08] unchanging.
[50:09] Seer and seen are different. The seer is
[50:12] one, the seen are many. The seer is
[50:14] unchanging and the seen are changing.
[50:16] You with me?
[50:18] And you extend it further.
[50:20] Instead of eyes, use ears. Ears are the
[50:23] seer or hearer.
[50:26] And the sounds, music, noise,
[50:30] birds.
[50:34] Keep it real, huh?
[50:36] Listen.
[50:37] They are
[50:39] They are different from the ears. The
[50:41] ears being the same, the sounds are
[50:43] many.
[50:45] And the ears remaining the unchanging,
[50:46] the sounds are continuously changing.
[50:49] Instead of just the eyes, you can have
[50:50] eyes and ears and nose and skin and
[50:54] tongue. And they all The principle is
[50:55] the same.
[50:57] The seer and the seen are different.
[51:00] Seer is one, seen is many. Seer is
[51:02] unchanging, seen are
[51:04] um changing.
[51:06] Let's go deeper. Always remember, what
[51:08] did he say? Do I get it? Is it real?
[51:12] At this point we we should be able to
[51:13] say, yeah, yes to all three. Yes, I
[51:16] heard what you said. Yes, it's um I get
[51:19] it. It's very simple.
[51:21] You might be like, move on.
[51:24] And number three,
[51:26] um
[51:27] it's real. It's a fact.
[51:29] Then
[51:30] let's move on. The second part of this
[51:32] verse. The eyes are the seen and the
[51:34] mind is the seer. Now we recede, we step
[51:38] back from the world.
[51:40] From sight, sound, smell, taste, touch,
[51:43] push back.
[51:44] Come back to the senses.
[51:47] Now you notice the senses are also
[51:49] experienced. I open my eyes. I can
[51:52] experience my eyes are open. I close my
[51:54] eyes. I just experience my closed eyes.
[51:59] So, the eyes now become the object.
[52:02] Who is the subject? Eyes are now the
[52:05] field. Who is the field knower?
[52:07] Eyes are now the
[52:10] um
[52:10] you know,
[52:11] the known. Who is the knower of that?
[52:14] The seen. Who is the seer? The mind is
[52:16] the seer.
[52:18] Mind is the seer.
[52:20] The mind is aware of the eyes. Mind
[52:23] knows eyes are open. Mind knows eyes are
[52:26] closed.
[52:27] The mind is the seer not only for the
[52:29] eyes, also for the ears, for the nose,
[52:31] for the skin, for the um tongue. All
[52:34] sense organs dump their information into
[52:37] the mind. Mind is the central
[52:39] processing.
[52:41] So, mind is the seer and the eyes and
[52:43] other senses are the seen. Remember
[52:45] again, seer and seen are different.
[52:49] The mind is distinct from the eyes. Yes,
[52:51] but
[52:53] and the um sense organs are many and the
[52:57] sense inputs are many. The mind is one.
[53:01] Mind is full of thoughts, many thoughts,
[53:02] but it's still mind. So, the mind, the
[53:05] processing unit is one. The sources of
[53:07] information are many.
[53:09] And mind being constant, the senses are
[53:12] continuously changing. And say Swami,
[53:14] mind is not constant. Yes, mind is
[53:16] transformed thought into thought into
[53:17] thought, perception to perception to
[53:19] perception. Still mind.
[53:22] So, now we have the mind becomes the
[53:24] seer and the senses are the seen.
[53:28] Are you with me?
[53:29] You might say, "What about the world?"
[53:31] The world is always the seen.
[53:33] Before that, the seer was the senses.
[53:36] Now, the senses themselves have become
[53:37] part of the seen and the mind is the
[53:39] seer.
[53:43] You know what is going on here? What is
[53:44] the central question? Who am I?
[53:47] I always identify with the seer.
[53:51] I am seeing. I am hearing. I am knowing.
[53:55] I am aware.
[53:56] I am never on the other side.
[53:58] So it's important to to find out who am
[54:00] I. We are using the seer to find out who
[54:03] am I. Earlier, senses are the seer. Now,
[54:06] mind is the seer.
[54:09] Again,
[54:10] seer is one,
[54:12] the seen are many. Seer is unchanging,
[54:14] the seen are changing. Seer and seen are
[54:17] distinct.
[54:19] Go deeper. Third part. And now this
[54:21] becomes interesting.
[54:25] Keep it real.
[54:28] These three questions,
[54:30] at least I've heard what you said. If
[54:32] that has not so not been there in you,
[54:33] you're in trouble.
[54:36] If you have heard what has been said,
[54:37] second,
[54:39] I have understood what you're saying.
[54:40] Good, even better.
[54:41] Third, it's real for me. Excellent.
[54:44] It's not real, you still have hope. You
[54:46] can try to get get it real. If you've
[54:48] not understood, you still have hope.
[54:51] You can understand after some time.
[54:53] If you've not heard,
[54:57] then there's problem. You have to go
[54:59] back to the beginning again.
[55:01] All right.
[55:03] Third part. The mind itself becomes the
[55:06] seen, and the witness consciousness is
[55:08] the seer.
[55:09] First of all, let us see if the mind is
[55:11] the seen.
[55:12] Think a thought, A B C D. Right now
[55:14] think A B C D or 1 2 3 4.
[55:17] Or abracadabra, whatever it is. Think a
[55:19] thought.
[55:21] Or om, even better.
[55:23] That's a thought right now in in in the
[55:25] mind.
[55:26] Am I aware of the thought? Are you aware
[55:29] of the thought? Are you experiencing the
[55:30] thought? Yes.
[55:32] In that case, you,
[55:35] the knower of the thought, the seer of
[55:37] the thought.
[55:39] You are the seer and the thought is the
[55:41] seen. ABCD is the seen and you are the
[55:45] seer. Right now see if it's theoretical
[55:46] is a fact. It will be an absolutely
[55:49] clear fact. Think ABCD is just like
[55:51] mental talk. ABCD
[55:54] and yes, I'm aware of it.
[55:57] The seer and the seen are different.
[56:00] You, the one which is aware of ABCD, you
[56:03] cannot be ABCD.
[56:07] You are that which is experiencing ABCD
[56:09] in the mind.
[56:11] And number two,
[56:13] the seen are many, the seer is one.
[56:16] Indeed, so many thoughts come into the
[56:18] mind. ABCD, 1 2 3 4, abracadabra, om. So
[56:22] many thoughts are coming in the mind and
[56:24] going.
[56:25] So many thoughts, but the one which
[56:27] experiences that thoughts, the one which
[56:29] experienced ABCD is the same one which
[56:31] experienced 1 2 3 4 is the same one who
[56:33] experienced abracadabra, the same one
[56:36] who experienced om.
[56:39] Seer is one, the seen are many.
[56:43] And the seen are continuously changing.
[56:46] The thoughts, feelings, emotions,
[56:47] memories, sensations, they're all
[56:50] changing, a stream.
[56:53] The seer is unchanging.
[57:01] Seer is unchanging.
[57:03] I admit I am the same one.
[57:07] So this seer of the thoughts must be
[57:10] distinct from the thoughts.
[57:14] Here itself you see the application of
[57:16] it.
[57:17] If you are separate from the thoughts,
[57:19] then you are not tied to the thoughts.
[57:22] You are not the thoughts.
[57:26] If you stay with it, you will get a
[57:28] great relief.
[57:30] Immediately you see not enlightened in
[57:32] both these senses. I have understood
[57:34] something. Enlightened, light has come.
[57:37] I have understood. Oh, I'm not the mind.
[57:41] Mind series of thoughts seen. And
[57:44] enlightened, I feel lighter.
[57:47] Till now I was carrying the burden of
[57:49] the mind.
[57:50] Now I'm lighter.
[57:54] Lighter how? Those thoughts are there,
[57:56] the mind is still there. Mind is doing
[57:58] exactly what it was doing, but I am the
[58:00] seer of the mind. I am not the mind. I
[58:03] haven't put the mind on my shoulder like
[58:04] a big burden and carrying it.
[58:07] I am free of the mind. I am free of the
[58:10] mind when? Not only when the mind is
[58:12] stopped in meditation,
[58:14] but also when the mind is functioning.
[58:16] Then also I'm free of the mind.
[58:18] Just as in a movie screen, a movie's
[58:21] playing,
[58:22] but even when the movie's playing, the
[58:24] screen is free of the movie. If there's
[58:26] a fire in the movie, does the screen
[58:27] burn? No. If there's a flood in the
[58:30] movie, does the screen get wet? No.
[58:32] Because even when the movie's playing,
[58:34] the screen is completely free of the
[58:36] movie.
[58:37] Similarly, I, the screen of
[58:39] consciousness, am completely free of the
[58:42] mind,
[58:43] even when the mind is operating.
[58:49] Not just when the mind has been shut
[58:50] down.
[58:51] Freedom from the burden of the mind does
[58:54] not mean being mindless.
[58:58] Freedom from the burden of the mind
[59:00] means you're enlightened, that you
[59:01] realize I'm not the mind, and therefore
[59:04] light. And you say, "Oh,
[59:07] good."
[59:09] Mind is there. Mind will keep doing what
[59:11] it does. Memory will function, intellect
[59:13] will function, even ego will function.
[59:16] I am the witness of it all. I am the
[59:17] seer. Why?
[59:19] Not trying to be the seer. This is the
[59:21] beauty of Vedanta. It's pointing out you
[59:23] are the seer. You have no choice.
[59:25] You are the seer. The moment you ex- you
[59:27] say I experience the mind,
[59:30] I experience my feelings, my thoughts,
[59:32] my memories, in that case you are not
[59:35] your feelings or thoughts or memories.
[59:38] Somebody went to a monk and said, "I
[59:40] have so many problems." And the monk
[59:42] shouted back, "I'm not interested in
[59:44] your problems." So, "How cruel?"
[59:46] "No, I'm not interested in your
[59:48] problems. I'm interested in you."
[59:51] Which means you and your problems are
[59:53] not the same thing.
[59:55] Immediate freedom comes.
[59:57] I see.
[1:00:01] I tell this story so many times, but I
[1:00:03] love it. It's applicable here. How you
[1:00:05] apply this insight that a man went to a
[1:00:08] monk in the Himalayas and like you go to
[1:00:10] therapist here. So, say
[1:00:12] And the same problem, whether it's monk
[1:00:14] in Himalaya or or a therapist in Seville
[1:00:16] or Madrid, same problem. The problem is
[1:00:20] "I have so much suffering. I am
[1:00:22] miserable."
[1:00:23] And the monk said, "Do you experience
[1:00:26] your misery?"
[1:00:27] "Yes, I experience my misery." "Then you
[1:00:31] are the experiencer, the seer of your
[1:00:33] misery. The seer and seen are different.
[1:00:35] You and your misery are different
[1:00:37] because you experience it.
[1:00:39] If you are different, then you are not
[1:00:41] miserable.
[1:00:43] You are the knower, the seer, the the
[1:00:46] witness of your misery.
[1:00:48] Then it's not your misery. It has come.
[1:00:52] It was not there earlier, it has come.
[1:00:53] One day it will go away. Not only one
[1:00:55] day, every day it is going away. Every
[1:00:57] moment it is going away.
[1:00:59] Sometimes I remember it and I'm
[1:01:00] miserable. Sometimes I don't remember it
[1:01:03] and then I'm not miserable.
[1:01:05] So, I am free of my misery. Because you
[1:01:09] experience the misery, you are not
[1:01:11] miserable. Look at the amazing insight
[1:01:12] of Vedanta. Why do we say I'm miserable?
[1:01:15] Because I experience misery. Why do I
[1:01:17] say I'm depressed? Because I'm
[1:01:18] experiencing depression.
[1:01:20] And Vedanta says if you experiencing
[1:01:22] depression, you cannot be depressed."
[1:01:25] Because you are the experiencer, you are
[1:01:27] the seer. The seer and the seen are
[1:01:28] different.
[1:01:31] You are experiencing a depression in the
[1:01:33] mind.
[1:01:35] You are the watcher of that, the
[1:01:36] experiencer of that, the illuminer of
[1:01:38] that, the light shining on that. The
[1:01:40] light is not depressed.
[1:01:43] Just because the eyes are seeing a
[1:01:45] yellow flower, do the eyes become
[1:01:46] yellow? No.
[1:01:48] No.
[1:01:50] Entirely free. Next moment eyes will see
[1:01:52] red flower. Then you see green leaf.
[1:01:55] Eyes do not become yellow, red, or
[1:01:57] green.
[1:01:58] Absolutely not. Similarly, as the mind
[1:02:01] keeps changing,
[1:02:03] you are the illuminer of the mind. You
[1:02:05] are free of the mind. So, this man who
[1:02:08] went and asked the monk, "I'm
[1:02:09] miserable." The monk said, "You are not
[1:02:10] miserable. You are the knower, the seer
[1:02:13] of your misery, and ever free of
[1:02:14] misery."
[1:02:16] When you're not miserable, so then this
[1:02:18] man went and thought that way. And if
[1:02:20] you think this way, you'll feel a
[1:02:21] freedom.
[1:02:23] Light.
[1:02:24] Free.
[1:02:25] And the man came back and said to the
[1:02:27] monk, "Oh monk, you are right.
[1:02:30] I'm not miserable. I'm so peaceful now."
[1:02:32] And the monk said, "No, you are not
[1:02:34] peaceful. You are the witness of the
[1:02:35] peace in the mind."
[1:02:37] Ah, that you have to be careful.
[1:02:40] The mind is very very subtle.
[1:02:43] The moment the mind calms down, mind
[1:02:46] realizes, "This fellow is escaping."
[1:02:49] So, I'm not the misery of the mind. Mind
[1:02:50] calms down, "Okay, I'm very peaceful
[1:02:52] now." And we are very innocent. We say,
[1:02:54] "Ah, so I am also very peaceful now."
[1:02:56] The monk pointed out, "No, that's the
[1:02:58] peace of the mind. That's the misery of
[1:03:01] the mind. You are free of both."
[1:03:03] The moment you say, "I'm peaceful." When
[1:03:05] the mind is peaceful and I say, "I'm
[1:03:06] peaceful." I'm trapped again. Cuz next
[1:03:08] moment the mind will again become
[1:03:09] misery. It'll mind will think, "I've got
[1:03:11] gotcha."
[1:03:13] Captured you.
[1:03:15] And next the mind will become miserable,
[1:03:16] and we also feel miserable. No.
[1:03:19] You are free of the misery of the mind,
[1:03:21] you're free of free of the peace of the
[1:03:22] mind also. When you're free of the peace
[1:03:24] of the mind and the misery of the mind,
[1:03:26] then what are you? Are you peaceful or
[1:03:28] miserable? You are peace itself. That
[1:03:31] peace
[1:03:32] Jesus says in the Bible, the peace that
[1:03:34] passeth understanding. Literally,
[1:03:37] Vedanta will interpret that literally.
[1:03:38] Understanding mind.
[1:03:40] Peace that passeth understanding, the
[1:03:42] self, the witness self.
[1:03:44] The witness self
[1:03:46] transcends the mind.
[1:03:48] And the witness self, which you are,
[1:03:50] which we are,
[1:03:51] is the peace that passeth the mind.
[1:03:54] Peace that passeth understanding. You
[1:03:56] are peace itself. The peace which cannot
[1:03:58] be disturbed. The peace of the mind can
[1:04:00] be disturbed.
[1:04:02] Next moment, it's always threatened.
[1:04:05] Strait of Hormuz, it is always
[1:04:08] sometimes open, sometimes closed.
[1:04:14] So, mind is like that.
[1:04:16] But you are the peace that can never be
[1:04:20] threatened.
[1:04:21] You are the witness of the peace of the
[1:04:22] mind. You're the witness of the absence
[1:04:24] of peace in the mind also.
[1:04:27] When the mind is disturbed, be happy. It
[1:04:29] is showing to you that you are not
[1:04:31] disturbed.
[1:04:39] Dhiravrittaya sakshi, Sanskrit is the
[1:04:43] movements of the mind and you are the
[1:04:44] witness of these movements.
[1:04:48] Another point here.
[1:04:49] Don't try to be the witness. And people
[1:04:52] immediately fall into this trap.
[1:04:55] Because there are techniques of
[1:04:57] witnessing the mind. And Buddhist
[1:04:59] mindfulness techniques are there, yogic
[1:05:01] mindfulness techniques are there.
[1:05:02] They're very good. They're very good.
[1:05:04] Very useful exercises, but they're
[1:05:06] exercises. Like any exercise, it's a
[1:05:09] beginning and an end.
[1:05:10] Depends on effort.
[1:05:13] But the witness we are talking about
[1:05:15] here does not depend depend on effort.
[1:05:17] It's already a fact.
[1:05:18] In Sanskrit there's a word siddha.
[1:05:21] Established.
[1:05:22] It's already established. It doesn't
[1:05:24] have to be established. Doesn't depend
[1:05:26] on us. Thank God, we are very
[1:05:28] unreliable.
[1:05:29] Doesn't depend on us.
[1:05:31] It's already done.
[1:05:35] You're the already established witness,
[1:05:37] regardless of who or what you are.
[1:05:39] Suppose a person has no interest in
[1:05:40] Vedanta or spirituality. Is he or she
[1:05:43] the witness? Of course.
[1:05:44] Just doesn't know it.
[1:05:46] Just doesn't see it.
[1:05:49] In fact, when Vedanta teacher was
[1:05:51] reading about it, 1950s,
[1:05:54] a schizophrenic person was brought to
[1:05:56] him.
[1:05:58] A very disturbed mind. A storm in the
[1:06:01] mind.
[1:06:02] Luckily at that point when he was
[1:06:04] brought to this teacher, this this man
[1:06:06] was lucid for a while.
[1:06:08] And the teacher said to him,
[1:06:11] "You are the watcher of the storm. You
[1:06:13] are not the storm."
[1:06:15] And that's all.
[1:06:17] And afterwards again those psych- those
[1:06:20] schizophrenic episodes would come
[1:06:22] to this man,
[1:06:24] but he was much better. He had a much
[1:06:26] Immediate relief was observed.
[1:06:31] He remains as the eye of calm in the
[1:06:34] middle of the the eye of the storm.
[1:06:36] There's a moment of calm in The mind in
[1:06:38] storm is that schizophrenic episode.
[1:06:41] There are brain reason There are reasons
[1:06:43] in the brain, physical reasons for it.
[1:06:45] And psychological reasons for it. But
[1:06:48] you are neither physical nor
[1:06:49] psychological. The realm of the
[1:06:51] physical, the realm of the psychological
[1:06:53] is the field. You're the field knower.
[1:06:57] You're the light which illumines the
[1:06:59] psychological and the physical. You're
[1:07:00] neither physical nor psychological.
[1:07:05] All right. So I am the witness
[1:07:07] consciousness. The witness
[1:07:08] consciousness, remember, seer and seen
[1:07:10] are different. You, the witness
[1:07:12] consciousness, you are different from
[1:07:14] the mind.
[1:07:15] Seen.
[1:07:16] The mind is many many many many
[1:07:18] thoughts, feelings, emotions. The
[1:07:20] witness consciousness is one.
[1:07:23] The mind is continuously changing.
[1:07:25] The witness consciousness is unchanging.
[1:07:27] That one
[1:07:30] transcendent witness consciousness,
[1:07:32] unchanging, I am.
[1:07:36] Don't try to be. You are already that.
[1:07:39] If you try to be, you're asking for
[1:07:40] trouble.
[1:07:42] Because then what will happen is you
[1:07:44] will grasp hold of you will grasp hold
[1:07:46] of a peaceful state of the mind and we
[1:07:48] call it ah, so this must be the witness.
[1:07:50] Then I must try to maintain that
[1:07:52] peaceful state of the mind. And then
[1:07:53] I'll complain to the Swami, sometimes it
[1:07:55] works, mostly it doesn't work.
[1:07:58] No.
[1:07:59] That peace which you are, the peace that
[1:08:01] passeth understanding, does not depend
[1:08:03] on the understanding. It's already
[1:08:04] there.
[1:08:06] The mind can only cover it up in
[1:08:08] ignorance or reveal it in knowledge. But
[1:08:11] what is covered up and what is revealed
[1:08:12] is always there.
[1:08:14] You are that.
[1:08:17] Supposing I don't understand all this.
[1:08:20] You're still that witness consciousness.
[1:08:23] You just don't see it.
[1:08:24] Suppose you I understand it. I get it
[1:08:27] now or I'm beginning to get it. That's
[1:08:28] great. Then you see it. But you are
[1:08:31] still that same witness consciousness.
[1:08:34] Doesn't depend on our effort. The
[1:08:35] understanding depends on our effort. But
[1:08:37] being the witness consciousness does not
[1:08:39] depend on effort. It's already a fact.
[1:08:41] You are that. You are the knower of the
[1:08:43] field, the witness consciousness. The
[1:08:45] word used here is sakshi, witness
[1:08:47] consciousness.
[1:08:48] Word used by Krishna is knower of the
[1:08:50] field, kshetrajna.
[1:08:53] And therefore, you are not the body.
[1:08:55] Why? The body is the witnessed is the
[1:08:58] field.
[1:08:59] You are the you You this is body is the
[1:09:01] seen. You are the seer.
[1:09:04] We are not even the mind. The mind is
[1:09:06] the scene. I am the seer.
[1:09:08] It's the witnessed. I am the witness.
[1:09:11] It's the illumined. I am the illuminer.
[1:09:14] It is the field. I am the knower of the
[1:09:16] field.
[1:09:17] What is the definition of the field
[1:09:19] which Krishna said?
[1:09:21] Idam shariram konteya this body is the
[1:09:23] field. That which is known. It could be
[1:09:26] a physical body. It could be a subtle
[1:09:27] body, the mind. The mind is also a body.
[1:09:30] Just as the physical body has parts and
[1:09:32] hands and legs and organs and tissues,
[1:09:34] mind is also has parts. There are
[1:09:36] complexes, there are thought patterns,
[1:09:38] there are memories, there are desire
[1:09:40] patterns and all of those are there.
[1:09:42] They're parts. It's also a body.
[1:09:44] Which we inhabit.
[1:09:46] Which we illumine. But you are free of
[1:09:47] them regardless.
[1:09:49] I'm free of these clothes even when I'm
[1:09:51] wearing them. I can change them also.
[1:09:53] But I am not stuck to these clothes. Nor
[1:09:56] are they stuck to me. Similarly, the
[1:09:59] mind is not stuck to you.
[1:10:01] In fact, at every moment it is showing
[1:10:03] us it is I'm not sticking to you. The
[1:10:04] mind is non-stick. It's flowing all the
[1:10:06] time.
[1:10:10] So,
[1:10:12] I am the witness consciousness. This is
[1:10:14] who I am.
[1:10:17] This is part one of the entire process.
[1:10:21] Part two.
[1:10:23] I have now separated myself from
[1:10:25] everything.
[1:10:26] You see, if I am not that which I am
[1:10:28] aware of, then everything I'm separate
[1:10:30] from.
[1:10:31] I'm aware of the world, so I'm not the
[1:10:33] world. I'm not the forms, sight, smell,
[1:10:35] taste, touch.
[1:10:37] I am not the thoughts. I am not the
[1:10:38] memories. I am not the desires. I am not
[1:10:40] even this personal identity. I am aware
[1:10:43] of all of them. They're separate from
[1:10:44] me. I am just bare light itself. One
[1:10:47] might ask the question, "Why did you say
[1:10:49] witness consciousness? Where did that
[1:10:50] come from?"
[1:10:52] Notice two things. Whatever it is, I
[1:10:54] exist.
[1:10:56] Even if I'm not the body, I still exist.
[1:10:58] I can directly feel I exist.
[1:11:00] I'm not the body. Why? Because the body
[1:11:02] is the scene. I'm the seer.
[1:11:05] Even if I'm not the mind, I exist. Why
[1:11:08] am I not the mind? Because the mind is
[1:11:09] the scene. I am the seer.
[1:11:13] But even when I'm not the body, not the
[1:11:15] mind, I don't disappear. Because I
[1:11:17] continue to exist. I am the seer of
[1:11:19] Because I'm I'm seeing the body,
[1:11:21] experiencing the body, clearly I exist.
[1:11:24] Because I'm seeing or experiencing the
[1:11:26] mind, clearly I exist.
[1:11:29] You had here a neighboring country in
[1:11:31] France, the great philosopher Descartes,
[1:11:33] cogito ergo sum.
[1:11:35] I think, therefore, I am.
[1:11:38] My own existence cannot be doubted.
[1:11:40] Nobody You can doubt the existence of
[1:11:42] God. You can. You can be an atheist,
[1:11:45] agnostic.
[1:11:46] But try to doubt your own existence.
[1:11:48] You cannot.
[1:11:50] Even when I say I'm not the body, I'm
[1:11:52] sure I exist, though I'm not the body.
[1:11:55] Even when I feel I'm not the mind, I'm
[1:11:57] the witness of the mind, still I exist.
[1:12:00] Now my question is, right now when I
[1:12:02] exist as a before Vedanta, so exist,
[1:12:05] what are you made of? Oh, I'm made of
[1:12:06] flesh and bones and blood and But if I
[1:12:09] say I'm not the body, I can't say I'm
[1:12:10] made of flesh and bone and What am I?
[1:12:13] I'm thoughts, emotions. But if I'm not
[1:12:15] the mind, then I'm not even thoughts,
[1:12:16] emotions, memories. What am I?
[1:12:20] Question is, what am I made of if I'm
[1:12:22] not the body?
[1:12:23] If I'm not the mind.
[1:12:25] One thing is sure, I exist. And I am
[1:12:29] aware. That also I'm sure.
[1:12:32] It's not an unaware existence. It's not
[1:12:34] a non-existent awareness. Existence and
[1:12:36] awareness are going together.
[1:12:39] This existence and awareness going
[1:12:41] together
[1:12:43] There's a word new word I'm seeing is
[1:12:45] being used for it. I like it very much.
[1:12:47] It's called presence.
[1:12:49] The The word presence
[1:12:52] in English, it has the
[1:12:55] nuance of existence.
[1:12:57] It also has the nuance of awareness,
[1:12:59] being present.
[1:13:02] Presence, being
[1:13:04] or witness or witness consciousness.
[1:13:08] These are different words you can say.
[1:13:09] That's what I am. I'm made of existence,
[1:13:12] I'm made of awareness.
[1:13:15] If I'm body, I'm made of bones.
[1:13:19] There's an old American folk song, Dem
[1:13:21] Bones. Have you heard Anybody
[1:13:23] Have you heard of it? Some of you?
[1:13:25] No. Very nice song.
[1:13:27] The skeleton, it's about the skeleton.
[1:13:29] How the skeleton is going through life.
[1:13:30] Right now, it's only a skeleton which is
[1:13:32] going through life. We've covered it
[1:13:33] with what with
[1:13:35] uh flesh and uh skin and all that and
[1:13:37] clothes, but basically Dem Bones going
[1:13:39] through life.
[1:13:45] If I'm body, then I'm Dem Bones.
[1:13:48] If I'm mind, then I'm Dem Thoughts.
[1:13:52] But if I'm not the body, not the mind,
[1:13:53] what I am? What am I?
[1:13:55] Dem Consciousness.
[1:13:58] Dem Awareness. Dem Light.
[1:14:01] Much better to be Awareness,
[1:14:03] Consciousness, Light. Much better to be
[1:14:04] Witness Consciousness than Dem Bones.
[1:14:08] Now the big question arises.
[1:14:12] Then, all right. So, if I accept I am
[1:14:14] Consciousness
[1:14:16] big advantage big freedom, enlightened,
[1:14:19] light, free.
[1:14:21] Not heavy.
[1:14:22] But then, question will now arise. Now I
[1:14:24] look back upon what I have left behind.
[1:14:28] I've left behind the universe, field.
[1:14:30] I've left behind the body, it is field.
[1:14:32] I've left behind the mind, it is field.
[1:14:35] I am the field knower. But what is my
[1:14:37] relation with the field?
[1:14:40] What is the field to me? Is it something
[1:14:42] outside me?
[1:14:44] Consciousness, an outside consciousness.
[1:14:48] Am I related to me? Is it part of it
[1:14:50] part of me? Am I part of it?
[1:14:53] Or are we one and the same?
[1:14:55] These questions whole of philosophy is
[1:14:58] meant to answer these questions.
[1:15:01] Idealism, realism, materialism, these
[1:15:03] are various answers.
[1:15:05] If I, the consciousness, I am born from
[1:15:08] the field like a plant from the field,
[1:15:11] this materialism.
[1:15:12] All of what I just said
[1:15:15] a straightforward materialist
[1:15:16] reductionist of physicalist these are
[1:15:19] various terms being used. A doctor
[1:15:22] materialist scientist will say, "I have
[1:15:24] no objection to what you're saying. I
[1:15:26] just want to add one more thing. This
[1:15:28] witness consciousness you're talking
[1:15:29] about, this awareness, this sakshi,
[1:15:31] whatever you're talking about, knower of
[1:15:32] the field, basically a byproduct of your
[1:15:35] brain activities.
[1:15:36] Ultimately, it's the body, it's the
[1:15:38] nervous system, it's the brain. You may
[1:15:40] think you're separate from the body, but
[1:15:42] you're being produced by the body.
[1:15:45] That's a materialist.
[1:15:50] What is my relationship with matter?
[1:15:53] I am consciousness. What's my
[1:15:54] relationship with matter? Is matter my
[1:15:56] mother? Does it give birth to me?
[1:16:00] Is it part of me?
[1:16:02] I and matter we are part of the same
[1:16:04] system.
[1:16:06] Or are they entirely distinct and we are
[1:16:09] interacting? That we are interacting,
[1:16:10] there's no doubt about it.
[1:16:12] I am interacting with matter.
[1:16:14] So, different philosophies answer in
[1:16:16] different ways.
[1:16:18] Materialism will say you are a product
[1:16:20] of matter.
[1:16:21] You are ultimately one scientist put it
[1:16:24] he had a
[1:16:25] glass of he had a bottle of Coke in
[1:16:27] front of him.
[1:16:28] He said, "According to I'm sorry to say,
[1:16:31] but according to physicalism,
[1:16:34] you know, mainstream modern science,
[1:16:36] we are the fizz in that Coke bottle. The
[1:16:39] bottle is fizzing.
[1:16:42] So, the body and the brain nervous
[1:16:44] system and the hormones and the
[1:16:47] chemicals in this body they're fizzing
[1:16:50] and it fizzes you.
[1:16:53] After some time what happens to the fizz
[1:16:55] in the Coke bottle? Gone.
[1:16:59] Bottle will remain, Coke will remain,
[1:17:01] fizz is gone. Similarly, body will
[1:17:03] remain, matter will remain, you are
[1:17:05] gone.
[1:17:07] All your consciousness light
[1:17:09] lights out the moment
[1:17:11] death physical body falls apart the
[1:17:13] matter will remain and you're dead.
[1:17:18] That is physicalism.
[1:17:20] Samkhya philosophy, very ancient
[1:17:22] philosophy
[1:17:23] says that
[1:17:25] there is matter, there is the field and
[1:17:28] there is the field knower. There is
[1:17:29] matter and there is consciousness. You
[1:17:31] cannot deny consciousness is not
[1:17:33] produced by matter, matter is not
[1:17:35] produced by consciousness. They are two
[1:17:36] distinct realities and they interact.
[1:17:40] Very ancient philosophy Samkhya, they
[1:17:42] call it Prakriti and Purusha,
[1:17:44] consciousness and nature.
[1:17:47] Consciousness is fundamental, it's not
[1:17:49] produced by the body. It acts through
[1:17:50] the body, interacts in the body.
[1:17:54] Body is produced by nature, mother
[1:17:56] nature.
[1:17:58] Modern panpsychist theories of
[1:18:00] consciousness, they also say this.
[1:18:02] Consciousness is a fundamental reality
[1:18:03] of this universe. It cannot be reduced
[1:18:05] to matter, matter cannot be reduced to
[1:18:07] consciousness also.
[1:18:09] One theory.
[1:18:11] What does Advaita Vedanta say about it?
[1:18:15] The sixth verse I think in this book
[1:18:16] which I was quoting seer and seen.
[1:18:19] Sixth verse says
[1:18:34] It says in this ocean of consciousness
[1:18:37] which you are. You are this
[1:18:38] consciousness, witness consciousness.
[1:18:40] The entire universe is like a network of
[1:18:44] names and forms
[1:18:46] appearing in you, the consciousness.
[1:18:48] Just like foam on the surface of the
[1:18:51] ocean.
[1:18:53] You are the ocean. The universe is the
[1:18:55] foam on your surface. Like that.
[1:18:58] The foam is nothing distinct from the
[1:18:59] ocean.
[1:19:01] It's appearing on the surface, looks
[1:19:02] distinct, like a layer.
[1:19:05] I was just thinking, some of the latest
[1:19:07] thinking about the the universe, they're
[1:19:09] saying it's quantum foam.
[1:19:12] Now, very interesting, the language. Of
[1:19:14] course, I'm not saying that the same
[1:19:15] thing, but the language is so similar.
[1:19:18] What Vedanta says is the entire universe
[1:19:22] is also nothing but this existence
[1:19:25] consciousness which you are. You are
[1:19:26] this existence consciousness. And you
[1:19:28] are this Krishna says you're this one
[1:19:30] existence consciousness in all beings.
[1:19:33] And all these beings, the bodies, the
[1:19:35] minds, the physical universe is like
[1:19:37] foam on the surface of this ocean of
[1:19:39] existence consciousness. Is the universe
[1:19:42] is names and forms appearing in
[1:19:44] consciousness.
[1:19:47] What appears in consciousness is not
[1:19:49] distinct from consciousness. The foam is
[1:19:52] not distinct from the ocean.
[1:19:54] The universe is you.
[1:19:57] The universe is you
[1:19:59] appearing to yourself as your own
[1:20:01] object.
[1:20:03] The seer and the seen now is no Notice,
[1:20:06] it is the same thing.
[1:20:08] The seen is just like foam appearing in
[1:20:11] the ocean of the seer.
[1:20:15] At this point, follow this carefully,
[1:20:16] very subtle point, an amazing point. At
[1:20:18] this point, you must immediately object.
[1:20:20] Didn't you start the first thing you
[1:20:22] said, seer and seen are different? Now
[1:20:24] you're saying seer and seen are the
[1:20:25] same?
[1:20:26] Ah, notice, I said, Vedanta said, the
[1:20:30] seer is distinct from the scene.
[1:20:34] Consciousness is distinct from matter.
[1:20:38] The knower of the field is distinct from
[1:20:40] the field.
[1:20:41] But we never said that the scene is
[1:20:43] different from the seer. We never said
[1:20:45] that matter is different from
[1:20:47] consciousness. We never said that the
[1:20:48] field is different from the field
[1:20:50] knower.
[1:20:52] Let me repeat.
[1:20:53] Till now I have said Vedanta has said
[1:20:56] seer is distinct from the scene.
[1:20:59] But it did not say that the scene is
[1:21:01] distinct from the seer.
[1:21:03] So what does that mean? How is that
[1:21:05] possible?
[1:21:07] The flowers are distinct from the vase.
[1:21:10] But the vase is also distinct from the
[1:21:11] flowers. I can separate them. I can show
[1:21:13] you the flower vase separately. I can
[1:21:15] show you the flowers separately.
[1:21:18] What do you mean that the scene is not
[1:21:20] different from this
[1:21:21] seer?
[1:21:22] Think about
[1:21:24] the table and the wood.
[1:21:27] The wood is distinct from the table.
[1:21:29] Before it was a table, it was wood.
[1:21:31] Now it is sitting on table. After the
[1:21:33] table is broken and sold for scrap, it
[1:21:35] will still be wood.
[1:21:38] The wood can exist without the table.
[1:21:40] The table cannot exist without the wood.
[1:21:43] The table is not distinct from the wood.
[1:21:44] It cannot exist separately. Can I can
[1:21:46] show you the flowers and the vase
[1:21:48] separately. Can I show you the table and
[1:21:50] the wood separately? I cannot because
[1:21:52] they are not two different things.
[1:21:54] They are one thing.
[1:21:56] And here what is fundamental? The wood
[1:21:58] is fundamental. The table has come. It's
[1:22:00] a name and form imposed on the function
[1:22:02] imposed on the wood.
[1:22:04] Similarly, waves and water, the foam and
[1:22:07] the ocean.
[1:22:09] The waves The water can exist without
[1:22:11] the waves. It can be no waves, calm
[1:22:13] water.
[1:22:14] But the waves cannot exist without the
[1:22:16] water. The waves are the water.
[1:22:20] Similarly, Vedanta is claiming the
[1:22:22] scene, the field, the object
[1:22:25] is not different from the seer, the
[1:22:27] knower of the field, consciousness, you.
[1:22:30] You and the universe are not different.
[1:22:32] You are distinct from the universe, but
[1:22:34] the universe is not distinct from you.
[1:22:39] It's a great great secret to understand.
[1:22:43] Therefore, this entire universe which
[1:22:45] appears to you, the witness
[1:22:47] consciousness, is not distinct from you,
[1:22:49] the witness consciousness. Yes, I still
[1:22:51] hold what the first thing we said, you
[1:22:53] the witness consciousness are distinct
[1:22:55] from it.
[1:22:56] Imagine our dreams, most powerful
[1:22:58] example, our dreams.
[1:23:01] Whatever we see in the dream,
[1:23:04] we are distinct from it. We are not
[1:23:06] involved there. We are projecting it.
[1:23:09] All the people, the activities, the
[1:23:10] places that we see in the dreams,
[1:23:13] we were there before the dream, we're
[1:23:15] there during the dream, we'll be there
[1:23:16] after the dream.
[1:23:18] But the dream, the contents of the
[1:23:20] dream, are not distinct from us.
[1:23:22] The contents of the dream are not
[1:23:24] distinct from the dreamer.
[1:23:26] The places you see in the dream, can
[1:23:28] they exist if you don't see them? They
[1:23:30] don't.
[1:23:31] The moment you wake up, they are gone.
[1:23:34] The places you see in the dream, the
[1:23:36] people you met in the dream, the act the
[1:23:38] things the events which happened in the
[1:23:40] dream, they depend entirely on you, the
[1:23:42] dreamer.
[1:23:43] They are not distinct. They are not They
[1:23:45] are not separate.
[1:23:47] Like here in the waking state, I, this
[1:23:50] physical body, this person, and this
[1:23:52] hall, we are separate. Right now, I am
[1:23:53] in the hall, but I can leave the hall,
[1:23:55] the hall will exist, I will exist
[1:23:56] separately.
[1:23:57] But not so in the dream.
[1:23:59] In a dream, if you're dreaming of a
[1:24:01] hall, the moment you wake up, the hall
[1:24:03] is gone.
[1:24:05] Similarly, the
[1:24:08] final conclusion about the universe in
[1:24:10] Vedanta is this universe is an
[1:24:12] appearance in you. You are the dreamer,
[1:24:16] and the universe is the dream.
[1:24:18] You are distinct from the universe, but
[1:24:20] the universe is not distinct from you.
[1:24:23] And you are the one consciousness in all
[1:24:25] beings.
[1:24:26] This one see, that's what Krishna has
[1:24:28] said. These bodies, these minds, they're
[1:24:31] the field. The one who experiences them,
[1:24:33] sees them, is the seer of the field, is
[1:24:35] the field knower. And there is one seer
[1:24:37] of the field, field knower in all the
[1:24:39] fields.
[1:24:41] And these fields are also not distinct
[1:24:43] from that. Non-duality is established.
[1:24:46] Non-dual consciousness.
[1:24:48] So, two stages. Stage one, separate
[1:24:50] yourself from everything. Nisargadatta
[1:24:53] says, "Knowledge shows me I am nothing."
[1:24:55] What does that mean? Not that I'm zero.
[1:24:58] Nothing means no thing.
[1:25:01] I'm not a thing.
[1:25:05] And then,
[1:25:06] at second step, when you realize all
[1:25:09] things are like foam in the ocean that I
[1:25:11] am,
[1:25:13] then all things are one with me. Love,
[1:25:15] that is love. Love shows me I am
[1:25:16] everything.
[1:25:21] Oneness is established.
[1:25:24] Vivekananda says, "Vedanta teaches us
[1:25:27] these two things. One is the divinity
[1:25:29] within ourselves, and second, the
[1:25:30] oneness of all existence."
[1:25:33] The divinity within yourself is that
[1:25:35] witness consciousness, which you are.
[1:25:37] And the oneness of all existence is this
[1:25:39] entire universe is one with that witness
[1:25:41] consciousness.
[1:25:43] I can keep on repeating, I'm saying the
[1:25:44] same thing in 100 different ways.
[1:25:48] Yes.
[1:25:49] Let it sink in.
[1:25:51] And in the second session, we will do
[1:25:53] we'll start where we stopped here.
[1:25:55] We'll go back to the witness
[1:25:57] consciousness, and then do a meditation
[1:25:58] of the witness consciousness. Stay with
[1:26:00] it, and try to experience what it is
[1:26:02] like.
[1:26:05] Any questions and answers?
[1:26:07] Yeah.
[1:26:08] Good. I filled up time nicely.
[1:26:12] Second session in half an hour?
[1:26:14] You can take a break.
[1:26:15] Om
[1:26:31] >> Very good.
[1:26:33] It gets easier now. The heavy the
[1:26:35] metaphysical heavy lifting has been
[1:26:36] done.
[1:26:40] This was our first approach to it. The
[1:26:42] second approach is tomorrow. The third
[1:26:44] approach is day after tomorrow.
[1:26:51] Okay, I'll be back like the Terminator.
