Radha Raman Hari Bol: Inside a Call-and-Response Kirtan

Some of the most affecting teaching in devotional music is never explained. It is sung, again and again, until a room is saying the same few syllables together. Radhika Das's fifty-five-second video is that kind of clip: a short stretch of kirtan, the call-and-response chanting tradition in which a leader sings a name of the divine and the gathering answers it back. There is no spoken commentary. The teaching lives in the repetition itself.

Read · 3 sections

What is the chant actually calling out?

The clip opens at 0:00 with "Jai Jai Radha Raman Hari Bol," and by 0:04 the answering line, "Shri Radha Raman Hari Bol," is in place. Each piece carries a meaning. "Jai" is a word of victory or glory. "Hari bol" is an invitation to call out the name of Hari, a common name for Krishna in Vaishnava devotion. "Radha Raman" names Krishna as the beloved of Radha, the one who delights her. That choice of name matters: it frames the divine not as an abstract principle but as a relationship of love, and the devotee participates in that love by voicing it. "Shri" is an honorific placed before the name.

Watch how the phrase returns. It reappears at roughly 0:12, 0:22, and 0:26, each time as a fresh breath of call and response. In kirtan, repetition is not padding. Each pass deepens the attention of the singers, and the same few words start to sound different by the tenth round. Bracketed music markers in the captions, around 0:31 and 0:43, show that the chant sits inside the musical texture rather than over speech. Listen with headphones and you will hear the voices and the instrumental lines moving as one body.

Why does the name shift to Vitthal?

At 0:46 the chant turns to "Vitthal." Vitthala, also known as Vithoba, is the name of a form of Krishna worshipped at Pandharpur in Maharashtra, and it belongs to a different regional devotional tradition from the Braj-rooted Radha Raman lineage. The clip does not explain the move, and it does not need to. A short passage like this shows something about bhakti as it moves across India: the same devotion finds its voice in different names, and a single session can carry more than one. Hearing the shift is itself a lesson in how wide the tradition is.

Where to go from here

This clip works best as an entry point. Listen once to hear the call, then answer back under your breath on the second pass. For fuller teachings and longer kirtan recordings, explore Radhika Das's channel on YouTube, where the rest of her devotional work lives.
