You Are Not the Doer: Surrendering the Illusion of Control

Sounds True

From Sounds True

Watch · 8

Michael Singer opens with a claim that sounds almost like a joke until you sit with it: "Perhaps the silliest notion that has ever come up in a human mind is something very, very simple. It's called I am the doer." In this episode of The Michael Singer Podcast, presented by Sounds True, the author of The Untethered Soul does not argue the point in the abstract. He walks his listener through a line of pointed, almost playful questions about breathing, heartbeating, cell division, evolution, and death, until the idea of personal control starts to look like a very small room built inside a very large house. The argument is simple: nearly everything that makes a life possible happens without our involvement, and the mind that insists otherwise is caught in a false sense of self. What he offers in return is not a new job description for the ego but a different relationship to it, one in which consciousness becomes the observer rather than the manager.

Why Does Singer Start With Breathing and Heartbeats?

The episode begins with the most ordinary body functions, the ones we never think about. Singer asks the question directly: "Are you really the doer? You make your lungs breathe in and out?" (1:26) He answers his own question with the kind of deadpan humor he is known for. You are busy, he concedes, but only doing what you want to be doing. Then he points out that breathing is a job you cannot take a day off from, and the same goes for the heart. "You make your heart beat? You better keep doing that," he says, "and you won't be around very long."

The move is deliberate. Doership is easiest to defend when we talk about careers, plans, and relationships, where we can point to our choices. It is much harder to defend when we look at the machinery running underneath those choices. Singer keeps pulling the camera back. He notes that the body is made of trillions of living cells that are dividing, multiplying, and feeding on their own schedule. "They are the doer," he says. If those cells stopped, you would not be sitting there claiming credit. The fact that the body is doing what it is doing is the precondition for the thought "I am the doer" to occur at all.

Where Did the Body Come From, and Who Built It?

Singer then turns to origins, and here he compresses a huge span of time into one blunt challenge. Evolution, or God, he says, are the two standard explanations for how a living body came to be. Either way, the answer is not you. "It literally Both of them say you, you didn't do it," he says. "You didn't crawl out of the chemical mix and start crawling down there and being a dinosaur and then here I am, I'm the doer." (3:19)

"How much did you do? How long did it take? On this planet, they're saying 4.5 billion years it took. And how much of the 4.5 billion are you guys here?"

— Michael Singer, The Michael Singer Podcast (Sounds True), at roughly 3:19

The point is not that the human being is unimportant. It is that the timeline of a single life is so small against the timeline of the planet that the claim of authorship collapses under its own arithmetic. Singer is also not interested in settling whether the cause is "evolution" or "God." He tells the listener the label is a matter of preference: "Call it God. You want to call it life? Call it life. Call it evolution. I don't care. But it ain't you." The framing matters because it removes the argument about belief and leaves only the observation that the process is larger than the self.

What Happens to the "I" When We Consider Birth and Death?

One of the most striking passages in the episode concerns pregnancy. Singer acknowledges, with real warmth, the power of motherhood, and then asks what the mother actually did to make the baby. "It was once a single fertilized cell, microscopic," he says. "How did a baby show up in your womb? You have no idea. And you didn't do it, did you?" (8:41) When someone answers "I ate," he presses further: what broke the food down, what turned it into lung cells and white cells? His answer is the same as before. It happened by itself, in relation to you being the doer. You did not make that baby.

Death is the other end of this line of questioning, and Singer handles it with notable calm. He lays out the two possibilities: "You will be there or you will not be there." If you are not there, he asks, is that a problem, since there would be no one present to object? If you are there, you will have a first-hand experience of what the moment the body dies is like, which he calls "quite an adventure" and "a once in a lifetime experience." The purpose of this exercise is not morbidity. It is to show the listener that the self we are so anxious to protect has an uncertain boundary, and that a mind unwilling to look at its own limits is operating on borrowed assumptions.

How Small Is the Realm of Doership?

Singer calls the territory we actually control the "realm of doership," and he is clear that it is smaller than most people imagine. The planet has to stay in orbit. The atmosphere has to hold. Countless events outside the body have to keep happening for any of our plans to matter. "There are so many things that you're not paying attention to," he says, "that if they were not happening, you're not even here." (7:02)

He pushes the scale further, to the cosmos itself. "1.3 million Earths fit inside the sun," he says at about 16:45, and the aim is not astronomy lessons but perspective. When the mind sees how much is going on without it, the urge to be important begins to look like a reflex rather than a fact. Singer is pointed about the cultural script that tells us otherwise, the one that rewards seminars on how to win, how to be great, and how to attract what we want. He does not dismiss ambition. He asks what we actually accomplish once we are honest about how much of the work was already being done.

And yet, he insists, this is not a message that makes you unimportant. "You are the most important thing in the entire universe. Period," he says. "Not that you're who's doing." The paradox is the heart of the teaching. The self is significant as the place where experience occurs, not as the engine of events. Singer makes this distinction explicit later in the episode: "You're the experiencer." (18:36)

What Is the Difference Between the Doer and the Witness?

This is where the episode connects to the teaching Singer is best known for. The YouTube description frames the issue in clear terms. When we cling to pleasant experiences or resist painful ones, we hold impressions in the mind that build a false sense of self. The doer is the identity that forms around those impressions, the one that says "I have to get this right" and "I have to stop that." The witness, which Singer elsewhere describes as the seat of consciousness, is the part of us that sees the experience without being defined by it.

The practical implication is an alternative to passivity. The episode's own summary describes a wise person who participates in life without demanding that everything conform to their preferences. Participation is not abandonment. You still work, love, plan, and act. What changes is the grip. When the action is not tied to a demand that the world cooperate, the mind does not have to lose its center every time events go another way. Consciousness, in this framing, can expand past the narrow "I am the doer" and notice the vast, self-running activity that holds the whole show together.

This is also why Singer keeps returning to ordinary moments rather than mystical peaks. The breath, the heartbeat, the meal, the child, the planet in orbit: these are not exotic examples. They are the proof already in your hands. The invitation at the end of the episode is simple. "Just notice what I've talked about," he says at about 52:29. Notice the breath. Notice that it happens. Notice what the mind does when it insists it is responsible for all of it.

Why Does This Teaching Still Resonate Now?

Singer's background gives his argument additional weight. According to the author bio attached to the episode, he had a deep inner awakening in 1971 while working on his doctorate in economics, then went into seclusion to focus on yoga and meditation. In 1975 he founded Temple of the Universe, a yoga and meditation center. His books, including The Untethered Soul, The Surrender Experiment, and Living Untethered, have carried this same line of inquiry to readers around the world. The episode is part of that continuing project: a demonstration, using everyday examples, of why the grip of personal control is so tight and why loosening it can feel like freedom rather than loss.

For a listener who has never heard the teaching before, the most useful takeaway is not a belief to adopt. It is a set of questions to test. What, in the last hour, did you actually do? What was happening in your body while you made your plans? What would still be happening if you stopped insisting on authorship? Singer's method is to let the answers arrive on their own, and to notice whether the sense of being "the doer" survives the honest count.

Where to go from here

Start with the breath. Spend a few minutes noticing that it moves without your direction, and then notice the small voice that wants to claim it. That gap is where Singer's argument lives. If you want to go deeper, The Untethered Soul is the book most often associated with this line of thought, and The Surrender Experiment and Living Untethered extend it into daily practice. The full episode is worth watching in its entirety, because much of the force comes from the rhythm of Singer's questions and the way each one closes a door the listener had been standing behind. Watch it once for the argument, then again for the pauses, and ask yourself how much of your life you are actually doing.

[0:52] Perhaps the silliest notion

[0:55] that has ever come up in a human mind

[0:58] is something very, very simple. It's

[1:00] called I am the doer.

[1:04] You think you're the doer. Do you

[1:06] understand that?

[1:08] You're just trying to figure out what

[1:09] you should be doing.

[1:11] And who you should be doing it with.

[1:14] And who you shouldn't be doing it with.

[1:16] But there's no question, I'm the doer.

[1:19] That's what I do.

[1:21] I do.

[1:22] And we've discussed it before, but we'll

[1:24] spend a little time.

[1:26] Are you really the doer?

[1:28] You make your lungs breathe in and out?

[1:30] It's a very concentrate now. That's a

[1:33] busy job, right?

[1:36] >> [sighs]

[1:39] >> You're busy doing that all the time,

[1:40] right?

[1:41] Well, no, I'm I'm busy doing what I want

[1:43] to be doing.

[1:44] I don't want to be doing that. That's

[1:46] boring.

[1:47] Well, you'd better be doing that. Or

[1:49] you're not going to be around very long.

[1:51] You make your heart beat?

[1:57] You better keep doing that. and you

[1:59] won't be around very long. How long can

[2:01] that thing stop

[2:03] before you you ain't doing squat?

[2:06] But you're the doer.

[2:08] You're the doer. You're in charge.

[2:10] Okay, well

[2:12] there's something like 35 32 trillion

[2:16] living cells inside your body.

[2:18] Not inside your body, that are your

[2:20] body.

[2:21] And they're dividing and multiplying and

[2:24] feeding and flowing and musseling and I

[2:27] know they're doing a lot of things.

[2:29] What if they weren't doing that?

[2:32] Are you the doer?

[2:34] I don't think so.

[2:36] They are the doer. They are the doer. If

[2:39] they're not doing their thing, you have

[2:40] no right to sit there and say,

[2:42] "I'm the one who's doing it." when

[2:44] you're not.

[2:47] When if they weren't doing it, you

[2:49] wouldn't even be here. Well, that's just

[2:51] dealing with this simple little thing

[2:52] called your body.

[2:54] It's because it is doing what it's doing

[2:57] that you can even be here thinking that

[3:00] you're the doer.

[3:01] Fair enough? Okay. Well, how did they

[3:04] get to be doing what they're doing?

[3:06] Whoa.

[3:08] That's a big story.

[3:10] They have a lot of evolution, they have

[3:12] a lot of God, they have a lot of you

[3:14] name, I don't care. I don't

[3:16] That's the silliest thing in the whole

[3:17] world. Here's the argument. It's

[3:19] evolution

[3:21] or it's God.

[3:23] Guess what? It's not you.

[3:27] It literally Both of them say you you

[3:29] you didn't do it. You didn't crawl out

[3:31] of the chemical mix and start crawling

[3:33] down there and being a dinosaur and and

[3:36] then

[3:37] here I am, I'm the doer. I did it all.

[3:39] How much did you do? How long did it

[3:41] take? On this planet, they're saying 4.5

[3:45] billion years it took.

[3:47] And how much of the 4.5 billion are you

[3:50] guys here?

[3:51] I forget you personally, just even you

[3:53] humans.

[3:55] Nothing.

[3:56] You didn't do it. And how long will you

[3:58] be here compared to that

[4:00] 4.5 billion years?

[4:02] 80, 90?

[4:04] Then what do you do? I don't know.

[4:07] Go bye-bye. I don't know. Cease to

[4:09] exist. Which one? I always tell you

[4:11] guys, I don't know why you have trouble

[4:12] with death. And I you do. I know you do.

[4:15] And you don't like when I talk about it,

[4:16] right?

[4:17] It is not that you do not know what is

[4:19] going to happen at the time of death.

[4:22] There are only two choices.

[4:24] You will be there

[4:26] or you will not be there.

[4:29] Either you who's in there, who's a doer,

[4:33] hilarious, all right. You who's in there

[4:34] busy doing your whole life, right?

[4:37] You in there either going to be there

[4:39] when the body dies or you're not going

[4:41] to be there when the body dies. And you

[4:43] spend time with me, understand? Let's

[4:45] say you're not there. Is that a problem?

[4:49] You're not sitting there saying, "Oh my

[4:50] god, I don't like this."

[4:52] You're not there.

[4:53] Like both turned off.

[4:55] Considering how much you guys complain

[4:57] about everything, I don't know why you

[4:59] have a problem with that.

[5:00] Do you hear me?

[5:02] And let's say you are there.

[5:04] Well, what's that like? Don't you dare

[5:07] listen to anybody else. Don't you dare

[5:09] you going to find out.

[5:11] You have a first hand experience of what

[5:14] it would be like the moment the body

[5:15] dies.

[5:17] It's quite an adventure. You know what

[5:19] it is? A once in a lifetime experience.

[5:24] So what's wrong with either of those?

[5:27] Nothing. Nothing. You see, you should be

[5:29] comfortable as could be. You're here.

[5:31] You dropped down on a planet. How did

[5:32] you get here, by the way? I forgot.

[5:34] You're the doer. You're going to take a

[5:35] spaceship?

[5:37] How did you get here on this planet?

[5:40] You [clears throat] don't even know.

[5:42] Talking about your consciousness, the

[5:43] doer.

[5:45] Did you born yourself? Did you make your

[5:47] body out of a single cell

[5:49] and make this thing

[5:51] and then have it grow over time? How

[5:53] much of that did you do?

[5:55] Do you see what I'm saying? How can you

[5:57] say I am the doer? I just have to figure

[5:59] out what I'm supposed to be doing. What

[6:01] am I supposed to doing here? Well, how

[6:03] about being here?

[6:05] That's what be here now means. How about

[6:08] hey, I'm here.

[6:09] How did I get here? I don't know.

[6:12] I'm here. How long I stay? Well, in the

[6:14] body for a certain number of years. How

[6:16] many?

[6:17] It's none of your business.

[6:21] It will be what it is. Well, what will

[6:23] determine how I die or when I die? Well,

[6:26] go study medicine, go study your

[6:28] genetics, go study this, go study that,

[6:31] go study cars hitting each other. There

[6:33] are so many different things that could

[6:35] happen, none of which you have control

[6:37] over.

[6:38] You're not the doer.

[6:40] Right? You don't have no control.

[6:43] But I want you to see how small it is.

[6:45] I want you to understand how much has to

[6:48] be going on by itself

[6:51] without your involvement for you to be

[6:53] here being the doer.

[6:56] Does the planet have to stay in orbit?

[6:58] What if it didn't?

[7:00] But you're doing that, right?

[7:02] There are so many things that you're not

[7:05] paying attention to

[7:06] that if they were not happening

[7:09] you're not even here.

[7:11] But you say the doer.

[7:13] How small is your realm of doership?

[7:16] That's something I like to talk about

[7:17] again. Hope you don't mind this talk,

[7:19] you know, cuz normally they want to go

[7:21] to a seminar, how can I win?

[7:24] What can I do to be great? How do I get

[7:26] things to be the way I want? How do I

[7:27] attract to myself what I want? Well, I'm

[7:29] the doer.

[7:31] I'll get all this done. What will you

[7:33] get done?

[7:34] All right? How much you actually getting

[7:36] done?

[7:38] When it's said and done, you'll see

[7:41] you're you're the most of I have to give

[7:42] you this, although you won't listen

[7:43] anymore. You are the most important

[7:45] thing in the entire universe.

[7:48] Period. Not that you're who's doing.

[7:50] We're going to talk about that. You

[7:51] already see that. You're not doing

[7:52] anything unless everything else is doing

[7:54] what it's doing. You ain't even here.

[7:56] Okay?

[7:57] And see, you get to the point

[8:00] where you understand what is your realm

[8:02] of doership. Cuz you think you're

[8:04] important.

[8:05] The president thinks he's important.

[8:07] I'm not picking on this president. It's

[8:09] any president. [clears throat] They

[8:10] think they're important. The lawyers

[8:11] think they're important. The mother

[8:13] thinks she's important. She She gave

[8:15] birth to a baby.

[8:17] You're very important. You gave birth to

[8:18] a baby.

[8:19] What exactly did you do to make that

[8:21] baby?

[8:23] I want to hear. I'm not taking away from

[8:24] motherhood. I love motherhood. All

[8:26] right. Well, I've got one.

[8:28] Right? What did you do to make that

[8:30] baby?

[8:31] It was once a single fertilized cell. A

[8:34] single fertilized cell, microscopic.

[8:38] How did a baby show up

[8:41] in your womb?

[8:43] You have no idea.

[8:45] And you didn't do it, did you?

[8:48] You didn't do it. Did you do it? I want

[8:50] to hear that. Did you do it?

[8:51] No, you didn't do it. Well, I ate

[8:55] I So, you ate. But, is that what you

[8:57] did? You ate?

[8:59] What broke it down? What turned those

[9:01] cells and broke broke the molecules

[9:03] apart [clears throat] and turned them

[9:04] into lung cells and and then blood cells

[9:06] and white cells

[9:08] Who Who did that?

[9:10] Same thing that I told you the entire

[9:12] way we've been talking so far.

[9:14] It happened by itself.

[9:17] Certainly in relationship to you being

[9:19] the doer.

[9:20] You did not make that baby.

[9:23] What made the baby? Life. Let's just

[9:26] call it life. You want to call it God?

[9:27] Call it God. You want to call it life?

[9:28] Call it life. Call it evolution. I don't

[9:30] care.

[9:31] But, it ain't you.

[9:33] You didn't do it.

[9:35] Is it okay that we talk about this?

[9:37] Because it's kind of important that

[9:39] [clears throat] you run around saying

[9:40] I'm the doer.

[9:41] I'm important. I'm important because I

[9:44] do what? I don't know. I'm important.

[9:47] I'm important cuz every single thing

[9:49] around me, everything everywhere is just

[9:51] doing it by itself so that I can say I'm

[9:53] the doer.

[9:55] Planets in orbit, stars, and galaxies,

[9:58] everything all has to be working and

[10:00] being the way it is for you to even be

[10:02] here saying I'm important. I do. How

[10:05] important is this realm of doership that

[10:09] you think you have? And this so hard. I

[10:12] see people just can't get this. All

[10:14] right?

[10:16] You have five senses.

[10:19] Did you make them? Make me an eyeball.

[10:23] You can't even if you're amazing.

[10:26] They're still struggling to make a robot

[10:29] that is good as you. They can heal a

[10:31] cell. Can you cut it can get cut and

[10:33] disappears? Takes care of itself, heals

[10:34] itself?

[10:36] Are you doing it? Oh, look. I healed.

[10:40] You did not heal that.

[10:43] It healed itself.

[10:45] The same way the cell turned into a

[10:47] baby.

[10:48] The same way everything else happens.

[10:50] It's just is what is. And you're sitting

[10:53] here saying I. You use the word I for

[10:55] everything.

[10:56] So, what is the scope?

[10:59] I want to talk about that. The scope of

[11:01] you

[11:02] you have a scope of doership. You have a

[11:04] scope, okay?

[11:06] How much are you involved in Timbuktu?

[11:09] What's happening in a household in

[11:11] Timbuktu 3 years ago?

[11:13] None. Oh, you didn't do that. How

[11:16] involved are you if you live in Kansas

[11:18] what went on in New York yesterday in

[11:21] some house and somebody yelling at

[11:22] somebody? You the doer?

[11:25] So, now we see how many things you think

[11:26] you are the doer. I want to ask how many

[11:28] things are you not the doer? How many

[11:30] things are happening? I gave you these

[11:32] these abstract biological

[11:34] physiological discussions. I want to

[11:35] talk about humanness. Human social

[11:38] interaction. How much involvement have

[11:41] you had every moment of your life in

[11:43] what else was going on where you

[11:45] weren't?

[11:47] Zero.

[11:48] I see, but you're the doer.

[11:50] In other words, your scope and frame

[11:54] is one moment at a time

[11:57] of how many other things are going on at

[11:59] that moment that you're not doing?

[12:03] Is there a number?

[12:05] Can you even imagine that? See, you

[12:06] wouldn't even think like that.

[12:09] You say, "Why don't I think like that?"

[12:10] Cuz it's the truth.

[12:12] It's happening everywheres, and you

[12:14] experience one moment

[12:17] of that everywheres of the hundreds of

[12:19] billions of zillions of things that are

[12:21] going on everywheres that you have

[12:22] nothing to do with. And you would mean

[12:24] you have nothing to do with it. I'm not

[12:25] the doer of that.

[12:27] I'm only the doer of what comes in

[12:29] through my senses. How small is that?

[12:31] How small is each moment that came in

[12:33] through your senses as you pass through

[12:34] life?

[12:35] Nothing. You're missing everything.

[12:38] And you finally catch on,

[12:40] "Wow,

[12:42] my realm of doership, my kingdom,

[12:46] pretty small.

[12:47] It only involves what I was involved

[12:50] with at that moment, and it's not

[12:51] involved in the whole rest of every

[12:53] single thing that was going on. Is

[12:55] what's happening to you Oh, no, I'm

[12:56] going to get I'm getting bad.

[12:58] I can't help it. Is what's happening to

[13:00] you more important than what's happening

[13:01] to everybody else truly scientifically?

[13:04] No.

[13:06] Thank you.

[13:08] There's no difference. What do you mean

[13:09] there's no difference? There's something

[13:11] happening everywheres.

[13:13] There's something happening absolutely

[13:14] everywhere, not just on that planet. All

[13:16] over. There's something happening

[13:18] everywheres, and you have no involvement

[13:20] in it, and you don't claim that you're

[13:23] the doer.

[13:24] Then, well, how in the world can you sit

[13:26] here and take the tiny moment you're

[13:28] having, string them together, cuz

[13:30] they're very small, and say I am the

[13:32] doer. I am the doer of what?

[13:35] I yelled at her and she yelled back. I

[13:37] did that. Okay? How many other people

[13:40] didn't yell? How many other things were

[13:41] happening? How much other things were

[13:42] going on that you would admit you're not

[13:45] the doer of?

[13:47] It's kind of embarrassing, isn't it?

[13:49] But you say I'm the doer. Of what? Of

[13:51] this little fiefdom you know, takes up 1

[13:53] second as it passes through Here, the

[13:56] way you look at it is this.

[13:58] There's light laser beams shining

[14:00] everywhere throughout the universe at

[14:01] every single moment and there it is,

[14:03] okay? You're passing through time, your

[14:06] consciousness, you who you call you, I

[14:09] the doer, I the I like

[14:11] it's passing through time, one tiny

[14:14] laser beam passing through time and

[14:16] space.

[14:17] All right? And all the rest

[14:22] you think have no meaning, they have

[14:23] nothing to do with you.

[14:25] They're just Why would I care?

[14:27] You know you know that. You know you

[14:29] mean that.

[14:31] You only care what's happening to you.

[14:33] And what's happening to you doesn't

[14:34] happen without every other thing

[14:36] happening at the same [laughter]

[14:38] It's all one system.

[14:40] So you finally get down to the point and

[14:42] I'll move on because I I would rather

[14:43] just keep talking like this because I

[14:45] keep talking to him that way for 50

[14:47] years, right? What do you think you're

[14:49] doing?

[14:50] Oh, I started a company. Oh, I had a

[14:53] daughter. Oh, I got married. What is

[14:55] else is going on that you're not doing?

[14:59] How dare you sit there and say that you

[15:01] matter more than anything else?

[15:03] How about I say that to you?

[15:05] How dare you have the audacity

[15:08] to say that you matter more and what

[15:11] happens to what happened to you is

[15:12] really important, isn't it? You don't

[15:14] even know what happened to him, who

[15:14] cares?

[15:15] You're talking about what happened to

[15:17] you and they want to tell you what

[15:18] happened to them. You kind of listen a

[15:20] little bit, but

[15:22] but when you're talking about what

[15:23] happened to you,

[15:25] that's way more important, isn't it?

[15:27] Is it?

[15:29] Is it? Is it?

[15:31] Or is it all the same?

[15:32] It's just all the same. Everybody's

[15:34] having experiences. There's no

[15:36] difference between this person, that

[15:38] person. They just had experiences. And

[15:40] the experiences you had, you didn't

[15:42] make.

[15:43] You didn't make the car accident. You

[15:45] didn't make the woman or a man that you

[15:47] married. You didn't make them. You

[15:49] didn't know anything about them. You

[15:50] didn't have their past. Nothing. It is

[15:52] absurd to think the way you think. Isn't

[15:55] it? There is no truth in it that I am

[15:58] important and nothing else is important.

[16:01] What I like matters, what I don't like

[16:03] matters, and what I want to happen.

[16:05] Right? Unbelievable.

[16:07] That's ignorance.

[16:09] Ignorance. You're ignoring the whole

[16:11] rest of the truth of everything. But

[16:13] what happens if you didn't? Guess what?

[16:15] You'd have no anxiety,

[16:17] no tension, no pressure. You'd be free.

[16:20] You'd be free. And you should know the

[16:22] truth. The truth shall set you free.

[16:24] That truth shall set you free. I'm here

[16:26] moving through this moment in space. But

[16:28] so is everybody else. Every single thing

[16:30] exists equally.

[16:32] Everything exists equally.

[16:35] It's all the same. It's all part of one

[16:37] whole called the universe. And you're on

[16:39] a tiny planet. About your planet I have

[16:41] Sorry, I have to talk about that. Planet

[16:43] very important, isn't it?

[16:45] 1.3 million Earths fit inside the sun.

[16:49] How important

[16:51] can anything that's going on on that

[16:53] planet be if 1.3 million

[16:57] of the planets fit inside one star and

[16:59] there's 300 billion stars in your galaxy

[17:03] and there's 2 trillion galaxies? Wow,

[17:06] are you important. You really succeeded.

[17:09] You didn't do anything.

[17:12] Fair enough?

[17:13] Okay. What I'm What I'm challenging

[17:15] I'm not challenging the greatness that

[17:18] you're going to find out you are.

[17:20] I'm challenging the stupidity of

[17:22] limiting your consciousness to one

[17:25] single spot on a tiny little planet in

[17:28] the middle of nowhere else for a few

[17:30] years and saying, "I can't handle this."

[17:32] [laughter]

[17:34] You can't handle what?

[17:38] Now do you understand liberation?

[17:40] That's the start of it. Okay, so now

[17:42] let's talk about

[17:44] is it this way? The others spoken the

[17:45] truth. All these other things are doing

[17:47] well. They're taking care of themselves

[17:48] or life's a happening place. It's doing

[17:51] its thing. And if it didn't do its

[17:52] thing, you wouldn't be alive or you

[17:54] wouldn't be here. And the things that

[17:55] you did, you didn't do them. Oh god, it

[17:58] was so amazing. Somebody came up to me

[18:00] and they said that they want to start a

[18:02] business with me. Okay, what if they

[18:04] didn't?

[18:05] What do you mean? What did it take for

[18:07] that person to show up at that moment in

[18:10] your life? They had to have their whole

[18:12] past background, the events that

[18:14] happened to them led them to be like

[18:15] that. It don't just boom

[18:17] go like that. And you did all those,

[18:19] right?

[18:20] You made the person, you made how they

[18:21] thought, you made the situation in their

[18:23] life. You didn't do any of that, any of

[18:24] it. You said, "Wow, look what happened.

[18:26] Look what I did." You didn't do anything

[18:29] compared to all the things that had to

[18:31] happen for it to take place.

[18:32] And so you wake up. You realize you're

[18:34] not the doer.

[18:36] You're the experiencer

[18:38] of life.

[18:39] That you are.

[18:41] You do experience the part of life that

[18:43] passes in front of you.

[18:44] Very good. And we're going to in the end

[18:47] say, "There's stuff you interact with

[18:49] that." Nobody's saying you don't

[18:51] interact with it. But you don't interact

[18:53] from the point of view of ignoring that

[18:54] every other thing It's hilarious. Just

[18:57] ignore that every other thing exists.

[19:00] And all that matters is me and what I'm

[19:02] doing and what decision I make. I'm

[19:04] sitting at a boardroom table. I sit at a

[19:05] boardroom table. Okay? You got all the

[19:07] board members and there's stuff going on

[19:09] making these big decisions, right? What

[19:11] if the table didn't stay together? What

[19:13] if the atoms didn't bond together? What

[19:14] if the quantum field didn't vibrate in a

[19:16] certain way to make the whole thing be

[19:18] what it is? What if the atoms didn't

[19:19] bond the way they do? You take

[19:21] everything else for granted,

[19:24] which is the cause of everything that

[19:26] you're experiencing, and you say what

[19:28] matters is me. Okay, can we just say how

[19:31] it got that way? Cuz that's Is it the

[19:32] truth or not?

[19:34] Of course that's not the truth. Of

[19:35] course you're not the center of the

[19:37] universe.

[19:39] You're in the center of your universe. I

[19:41] told you all these other things have to

[19:42] be happening for you to even exist or

[19:43] for anything else to happen in your

[19:45] entire life.

[19:47] So, what happened?

[19:48] This thing called mind,

[19:51] which is a very great thing, and then

[19:52] don't ever think I talk against mind cuz

[19:54] I don't. Mind is a very great thing. And

[19:57] this thing called emotions, they're very

[19:58] great things.

[20:00] Like a car is a really great thing, but

[20:02] not if you use it to hit people.

[20:04] It depends on how you're using these

[20:05] things. You have a mind.

[20:08] It has the ability to think.

[20:10] You have senses. They have ability to

[20:12] experience what comes in from the

[20:14] outside world. Otherwise, you wouldn't

[20:16] even know it's there.

[20:17] You have a heart. Has the ability to

[20:19] feel.

[20:21] Did you make the mind?

[20:24] Since somebody would say, "Yeah, I went

[20:25] to college." No, did you make the mind

[20:28] that even knew there's a thing called

[20:30] college? And did you make a mind that's

[20:32] able to learn? Not what did it learn?

[20:35] That's capable of learning, of thinking.

[20:37] Did you create this thing called

[20:39] thinking?

[20:40] I don't care how you think.

[20:42] You do think. Where did that come from?

[20:44] Same place the embryo came from. It

[20:47] didn't come from you.

[20:49] You did not make your mind. You made

[20:51] what got in it and what you held on to

[20:53] it. You know, you did that, but you did

[20:54] not make this thing called mind, and you

[20:56] did not make this thing called heart.

[20:58] Can your heart feel?

[21:00] How do you know?

[21:01] Can it feel love?

[21:03] Did you make this process, this feeling,

[21:05] this experience called love?

[21:07] Obviously not. Other people know what

[21:09] you're talking about. There's a thing

[21:11] called love. Is there a thing called

[21:12] love?

[21:13] Can you fall in love? Then there has to

[21:16] be a thing called love. Can you fall out

[21:18] of love?

[21:19] Can you feel hatred, anger, resentment?

[21:22] Can you feel things? Did you make those

[21:25] things?

[21:26] We can talk about how why you experience

[21:28] them, but you didn't make them.

[21:31] They exist in the universe. You don't

[21:33] think like that.

[21:35] You don't honor yourself. You go, "How

[21:36] did

[21:37] How did that get here?"

[21:40] No, you only think, "I want to feel

[21:41] this.

[21:42] I should do this. I shouldn't have done

[21:44] that." And so you doubt the basic

[21:46] structure. Everything has to be going on

[21:50] that has nothing to do with you in order

[21:52] for you to be this thing that thinks I'm

[21:54] the doer. I I hope I haven't

[21:55] overburdened it. If I If I multiplied

[21:58] everything I said raised to 10,000th

[22:01] power, I haven't come close to saying

[22:03] how little the stuff that you do is and

[22:05] how insignificant,

[22:07] totally insignificant.

[22:10] And yet we run around with all our

[22:12] problems and all How did that happen?

[22:15] That is called the fall from the garden.

[22:19] Your natural state

[22:22] is one of awareness of being.

[22:26] The universe exists. You did not make

[22:28] it.

[22:29] Hundreds of trillions of stars and moons

[22:31] and things going on. You know now that I

[22:34] forced you to think about it for a

[22:35] moment. You didn't do it.

[22:37] But you are conscious. You're aware.

[22:39] You're an aware being

[22:41] that is aware that things are coming in

[22:44] through your senses. You're aware that

[22:46] thoughts are forming in your mind.

[22:48] You're aware that emotions are forming

[22:49] in your heart.

[22:51] That's who you are.

[22:52] You're the awareness of being. The other

[22:54] things are what you're aware of. And

[22:56] like I told you for this entire talk so

[22:58] far, they have nothing to do with you.

[23:00] They're just happening.

[23:02] All right? Oh my god, I'm late. The

[23:03] plane didn't take off when I wanted it

[23:05] to. Did you make the plane? Did you make

[23:07] the pilot? Did you make the fuel that

[23:08] ran out? Did you What in the world are

[23:10] you doing?

[23:11] I'm making a big deal out of this tiny,

[23:14] tiny, minuscule, irrelevant thing, and

[23:18] that's even just irrelevant to you or to

[23:20] somebody else. How about irrelevant to

[23:22] the rest of the universe?

[23:23] And you don't like this talk.

[23:25] Cuz you like to think you're important.

[23:27] No, you aren't. That is not important.

[23:29] That can't possibly be important. I just

[23:30] put it in a scope. All right? Lose your

[23:33] frame of reference. That's ridiculous.

[23:34] It's completely unimportant. How's that?

[23:37] Everything that ever happened to you is

[23:38] completely unimportant.

[23:40] If you'd looked to the left, you

[23:42] wouldn't have that experience.

[23:44] If you closed your eyes for a moment,

[23:46] you missed it. That's how important it

[23:48] is. All right? So, I'm going to say it

[23:49] again. Nothing that ever happened to you

[23:53] makes any difference. It's just

[23:55] something you experienced in the midst

[23:57] of this whole flow of events that are

[23:59] happening everywhere, that happened in

[24:01] what was going on in front of you at

[24:03] that moment. All right? And the truth of

[24:05] the matter is, you think, "Well, that

[24:06] makes me feel so small." No, it makes

[24:08] you be big.

[24:09] Cuz what's happening is you're limiting

[24:12] your consciousness, which has no limits.

[24:15] That's how you need to get into

[24:15] spirituality, right? Understanding

[24:17] truth. You are a conscious being. Well,

[24:20] so she, so she, so she.

[24:23] The consciousness is the same. Like

[24:25] every drop of water in the ocean is the

[24:27] ocean. Consciousness is that which is

[24:29] capable of being aware.

[24:32] And if you're not aware, we're not

[24:33] having a discussion. There's nothing to

[24:34] talk about. It's because you're aware

[24:37] that you can say I'm the creator of the

[24:39] universe. I'm God. Because you're aware.

[24:42] That's what happened. And this is the

[24:44] fall from the garden. You will get to a

[24:45] point where you you experience it cuz

[24:47] you do it. You you fall from the garden

[24:49] every day of your life. Where did you

[24:50] fall from? You fell from the

[24:53] consciousness that created everything,

[24:55] God, call it whatever you want, the

[24:58] universal consciousness that's aware of

[25:01] everything, it is everything, it made

[25:02] everything, it's just what is that is.

[25:05] What you all mean by God is a wishing

[25:07] machine. Please take care of me, please

[25:09] give me what I want, don't let this

[25:11] happen to me. That's how you relate to

[25:13] God, which is fine, it's wonderful, and

[25:14] prayers are wonderful. Okay, you will

[25:16] reach a point where you understand who's

[25:18] talking to who, cuz there's nothing

[25:20] there but God.

[25:21] That's all there is, the whole universe

[25:23] is God's. In the beginning God created

[25:25] the heavens and earth,

[25:27] all right? So what happened is that

[25:29] consciousness, that awareness, which I

[25:31] might as well let out of the bag right

[25:32] now, what is the nature

[25:34] of that consciousness?

[25:36] What does it feel? What I understand, if

[25:39] you're totally free and all there is is

[25:41] awareness of being, not aware of

[25:43] something.

[25:44] That's the fall.

[25:46] I'm aware of what you said, I'm aware of

[25:47] what I feel, I'm aware of this rain.

[25:50] Okay, who's aware? Who's aware?

[25:54] And you get to the point you understand,

[25:55] I'm in here

[25:57] and I'm aware of what is passing before

[25:59] my consciousness, but I am the

[26:01] consciousness itself.

[26:03] And what happens is

[26:05] that consciousness is capable of being

[26:06] aware of everything, every And Christ

[26:09] taught you that. Not a hair on your head

[26:11] moves,

[26:12] not a sparrow from tree falls that God

[26:15] doesn't know. Of course,

[26:16] God is everything.

[26:18] God is the underlying force that creates

[26:21] every atom, that creates every thought,

[26:22] that creates every single thing, there's

[26:24] nothing but God. There There's God. The

[26:27] ones who dare to throw out God that way,

[26:29] right? Well, the deep spiritual

[26:31] teachings all do. The Quran, the the

[26:34] mystical aspects of Christianity, the

[26:37] Sufis,

[26:38] the the Kabbalah of the Jewish

[26:40] tradition, they talk about God.

[26:43] Fair enough, but the rabbis, the ancient

[26:44] rabbis,

[26:45] the gurus, rabbis, they wouldn't write

[26:48] the word God.

[26:50] They would write G _ D because who are

[26:53] you to even think of such anything that

[26:56] Sorry. Okay, fine. So, that is your

[26:58] nature.

[26:59] What do you mean your nature? You are

[27:01] conscious. So, I took everything else

[27:02] away, didn't I? I'm giving you who you

[27:05] are. You're the conscious being that

[27:06] experienced all this stuff I talked

[27:08] about.

[27:09] Okay? And what's the nature of that

[27:10] consciousness? Satchitananda.

[27:12] Eternal conscious ecstasy.

[27:15] Sat chit ananda. Eternal conscious

[27:18] ecstasy.

[27:20] Oh.

[27:21] That sounds like fun.

[27:23] What what happened to me? How did I get

[27:25] left out of bread line?

[27:27] All right?

[27:29] That's who's in there.

[27:30] That's what's aware of your thoughts.

[27:33] You care about your thoughts and be

[27:34] aware of who notices the thoughts.

[27:37] Eventually, you'll go so deep

[27:39] spiritually, you'll realize seen one,

[27:41] seen them all.

[27:42] They're just thoughts.

[27:44] Oh, Sally died. Maybe I'm going to die.

[27:47] This comes and goes and

[27:50] I don't think I need to stare at that.

[27:52] >> [laughter]

[27:52] >> These How many thoughts have you had

[27:54] that are meaningless?

[27:56] How many thoughts are you having right

[27:58] now that are meaningless?

[28:00] It's constantly.

[28:02] Right? It's just there are thoughts.

[28:04] Yes, there are thoughts. Nobody's

[28:05] denying reality.

[28:08] What matters is who notices that there

[28:10] are thoughts.

[28:11] Cuz that thing is always there. Doesn't

[28:13] matter if it's a nice thought, a bad

[28:15] thought, X-rated, G-rated, PG, doesn't

[28:17] matter. It's a thought and you are aware

[28:20] of it.

[28:21] So, I've taken everything else away from

[28:22] you in this talk and I'm going to give

[28:24] everything back. You are the most

[28:26] important thing in the universe. You

[28:28] who's conscious, you who's in there

[28:29] noticing the thoughts. I don't care what

[28:31] thought. If you notice a thought, you

[28:33] notice it. You're in there. You notice

[28:35] your emotions. They can be up and down

[28:37] and nice and pure and impure. Someone's

[28:40] noticing.

[28:41] It is the same essence of your being

[28:44] noticing every thought you ever had. Did

[28:47] you have thoughts yesterday?

[28:49] How do you know?

[28:50] Because you were in here experiencing

[28:52] it. Did you have thoughts when you were

[28:53] 5 years old?

[28:55] Wow, you're in there.

[28:57] You've been in there the whole time.

[29:00] Are you capable of just being? You've

[29:03] heard me now again Buddhist. Are you

[29:05] capable of just being? Now you

[29:07] understand what that means. Just being

[29:11] the consciousness that's aware of what

[29:13] it's conscious of.

[29:16] The consciousness that's aware of what

[29:18] it's conscious of. It's conscious of

[29:19] thoughts. It's conscious of emotion.

[29:22] Whose thoughts? Yeah, okay, your

[29:23] thoughts are I gave them to you. You get

[29:24] to have your thoughts. All right. So,

[29:27] basically, you're having thoughts,

[29:29] you're having thoughts. They're not the

[29:30] same thoughts, but you're all aware of

[29:33] the thoughts.

[29:34] You're conscious. You're a conscious

[29:36] being. That is the most important part

[29:38] of your being. How do I prove it? Turn

[29:40] off the consciousness. Now what?

[29:43] You know, you're not there anymore. All

[29:46] right. Turn off the bad thought. Oh,

[29:48] good. I don't have a bad thought

[29:49] anymore. Have a nice thought. Oh, have a

[29:50] nice thought. Turn off the awareness

[29:54] that is aware that you had a thought.

[29:56] And you're not there.

[29:58] It is the core of your being. It is your

[30:00] soul. It's what I mean by soul. The

[30:02] essence of your being. The

[30:04] consciousness. All right. And then what

[30:07] happens?

[30:08] Consciousness is everywhere. Conscious

[30:10] What's meant by God? It's the creator of

[30:12] the universe.

[30:13] Now, what happens is

[30:15] it starts to experience

[30:18] what it made. I don't know. I I can't

[30:20] help myself. What do you want to talk

[30:22] about? It starts to experience creation.

[30:24] That's again the beginning God created

[30:25] heaven and earth. Then he made this.

[30:27] Then he made this. Oh, okay. Out of the

[30:29] consciousness, out of this oneness. In

[30:31] the beginning was the light. Oh, yes,

[30:33] it's also true. In the beginning there

[30:35] was just pure awareness of being, pure

[30:37] consciousness. Then it went smaller and

[30:40] smaller and smaller. And it's aware of

[30:42] its dances. On the seventh day he said

[30:44] he looked and rested and what saw that

[30:46] what made was good.

[30:48] Right? Sixth day, seventh I don't

[30:50] remember which day it was that he said

[30:52] it was good. All right?

[30:54] Don't think of a person that are making

[30:56] this stuff.

[30:57] When I think about think of the quantum

[30:58] field underneath, omnipresent,

[31:00] everywhere, emanating vibrations that

[31:03] create all of this. The omnipresent

[31:06] field that vibrates.

[31:09] That's the beginning of the word. In the

[31:11] beginning was the word and vibrated

[31:13] throughout creation and out of it came

[31:15] atoms and electron, neutron, proton, the

[31:18] whole thing that science teaches you.

[31:20] Okay? So there. So what's wrong with

[31:22] that? Nothing. It's just reality. And

[31:24] you are that. That's what you are. You

[31:26] are that consciousness. So what

[31:28] happened? You stared at a particular

[31:31] moment in the realm of creation of which

[31:34] there are 700 zillion zillion quillion

[31:36] going on at the same time.

[31:38] Your consciousness

[31:40] got distracted

[31:42] by a particular moment. That's it. The

[31:44] whole key is the fall from the garden is

[31:47] about distraction.

[31:49] It's about saying that if if I'm

[31:52] looking at a field and there's a snake

[31:55] moving. Not only is there a snake there,

[31:58] but there are trees, grass, all kinds of

[32:01] things.

[32:02] But my consciousness, my awareness,

[32:05] focuses, becomes distracted by one tiny

[32:09] little thing.

[32:10] Instead of being aware that all of it's

[32:12] happening and I'm aware of it all and

[32:15] it's all just creation being creation. I

[32:18] get distracted by what you said, by what

[32:21] he did, by what the snake moved. Right?

[32:24] All of a sudden my focus of

[32:26] consciousness is no longer universal.

[32:29] It's no longer expansive. It becomes

[32:31] concentrated down onto one object.

[32:34] That's the fall from the garden. The

[32:36] fact that you are now not in the divine

[32:39] consciousness, the oneness of all

[32:40] awareness of all things, you're now

[32:42] focused on a snake. You're focused on

[32:44] what somebody said. You're focused on a

[32:46] zit on your face. You're focused on

[32:48] something a little bit smaller than the

[32:50] whole universe.

[32:51] And that's what you fell into. You fell

[32:54] into focusing on particular things that

[32:57] were unfolding in front of you over the

[32:59] course of your life. And that's how

[33:01] those things seem so important to you.

[33:02] You didn't let them come and go. You

[33:04] didn't sit there and say You didn't even

[33:06] say anything. You're sitting there

[33:07] experiencing a moment. It's raining.

[33:09] Here, it's raining out.

[33:12] What's that mean? It means it's raining

[33:13] out.

[33:14] I get to experience rain. No, I don't

[33:16] want it to be raining now. I want it to

[33:18] be raining an hour from now where I

[33:20] don't have to get out of the car and get

[33:21] everything wet and be on my birthday.

[33:24] All of a sudden, you owned it. You You

[33:26] took it

[33:27] >> [clears throat]

[33:27] >> You

[33:28] You took it personal. How's that?

[33:31] You took it personal. And because you

[33:33] took it personal, you focused on it. And

[33:35] because you focused on it, you did this

[33:37] amazing thing which should tie back

[33:39] together what we're talking about,

[33:40] right? You owned it as personal. You

[33:43] owned it as I remember when my fifth

[33:46] birthday and I had it outside It took

[33:48] over I had it outside and it poured.

[33:50] I'll never talk to God ever again. How

[33:52] could you do such a thing? Whoa.

[33:55] Well, where did that come from?

[33:57] It's raining.

[33:59] The farmer's happy it's raining. But you

[34:01] somehow, your consciousness, the same

[34:04] consciousness

[34:06] that's aware of everything, can be. Can

[34:09] you open and that's what it means to be

[34:10] open.

[34:11] It means to be expansive.

[34:13] Right? As opposed to contractive by

[34:16] staring on what's happening in front of

[34:19] you. I I'm glad I had the early talk

[34:22] where I showed you what's happening in

[34:23] front of you is irrelevant.

[34:25] There's 800 billion zillion things going

[34:26] on all over the place, all right? But

[34:28] you focused on that event.

[34:31] Do you focus on all events? No, you

[34:33] drive by the white lines all the time.

[34:35] You know, they're yellow, they're

[34:36] dashed, or who knows, who cares? Cars

[34:39] drive by, they go right through, don't

[34:41] they? They come into your consciousness,

[34:44] you experience them, and then they

[34:46] they're gone.

[34:48] But sometimes they don't. Sometimes they

[34:50] leave these deep impressions on you, on

[34:52] your mind. How does it I don't

[34:54] understand. How does an impression They

[34:57] won't talk to you about this, I will.

[34:59] How does an impression

[35:01] be in your mind?

[35:02] The mind is just open air. Your mind can

[35:05] be completely open. Your heart can be

[35:07] completely open. You just experience the

[35:08] flow of life pouring through you.

[35:11] So, what happened? How does it something

[35:12] gets Can things get stuck in your mind?

[35:15] Are there any things from your past

[35:16] stuck in your mind?

[35:18] Are they happening right now?

[35:20] When you're five, no. How do they get

[35:22] stuck in your mind? That's explaining a

[35:24] totally different world than we talked

[35:26] about. The world's unfolding like I told

[35:28] you in the beginning all over the place.

[35:30] And you now, your consciousness has the

[35:32] right to have an experience. It does

[35:33] have an experience.

[35:35] And now the experience takes place, it's

[35:36] supposed to come in and pass through.

[35:38] Why? Because then the next experience

[35:40] happens. You know how the next

[35:41] experience? Okay? They come in, you

[35:44] experience them, you say thank you.

[35:47] What if I don't There's no I yet.

[35:50] I didn't make an I yet. You know, you

[35:51] can say, "What if I don't like it?"

[35:53] There's just the experiencer.

[35:56] The being that is experiencing when you

[35:58] cry.

[36:00] This is essence of spirituality. Do you

[36:01] understand that? It comes in. What does?

[36:04] Life does.

[36:05] Reality comes in. How's that? Reality

[36:08] comes in. When? Always.

[36:10] Where? Well, if you're looking, it's

[36:12] what you're in front of. That's your

[36:13] reality. There's reality. It comes in.

[36:16] How does it get stuck in your mind?

[36:17] What's the whole thing about suppression

[36:18] and repression? What's Freud all about?

[36:20] I don't understand.

[36:21] What would you suppress? There's nothing

[36:23] there. It happened, it's gone. It

[36:25] happened, it's gone. It's happened, it's

[36:27] gone. You're growing, you're

[36:28] experiencing the beauty of, you know,

[36:30] experiences are very important good

[36:32] things. They help you expand, you grow.

[36:34] You're having these rich things called

[36:36] experiences. That's how you took birth,

[36:38] by the way.

[36:39] You took birth so you can have

[36:40] experiences. You didn't take birth to go

[36:42] sit on a mountain somewhere.

[36:44] You took birth to have experiences so

[36:47] you can become more experienced.

[36:50] That's what happens. Well, which

[36:52] experiences make me more experienced?

[36:53] All of them.

[36:55] Every single experience you ever had is

[36:57] the same as any other experience you

[36:58] ever had. They're experiences, they're

[36:59] something you learn from. They're

[37:01] something that came in and made you a

[37:02] greater being. If you have more

[37:04] experiences, aren't you a greater being?

[37:07] Then every single experience is your

[37:08] teacher, every single experience is

[37:10] expanding you, every single experience

[37:12] so far I haven't added the I in yet,

[37:14] have I? I haven't screwed this up too

[37:16] bad yet.

[37:17] I have not introduced this thing in

[37:19] there that says I don't like it. I don't

[37:22] want to have the experience. I like a

[37:24] better one, here's a better one. I don't

[37:26] want to have had this experience.

[37:28] Obviously you had the experience, so you

[37:30] wouldn't not want to have had it. And

[37:31] you're never ever going to not have had

[37:33] it.

[37:34] So [snorts] I don't want to have had the

[37:35] experience. That's just an absurd thing

[37:37] to say. You obviously had it.

[37:40] And it's never going to go away.

[37:43] You can't erase something you already

[37:44] had, can you?

[37:46] Hey, you wish you could. You'd like to

[37:47] think if I think about it some way and

[37:49] twist it and rationalize it, I can make

[37:51] it go away. No, you cannot make it go

[37:53] away.

[37:54] You had it. It was real, it happened.

[37:57] Question is, could you handle it? Can

[37:58] you let it come in and be an experience

[38:01] you had?

[38:02] You learn from the experience, you grow

[38:03] from the experience, you become a

[38:05] greater being from the experience.

[38:06] You're not judging it. Isn't it amazing

[38:08] that what I'm talking sounds so weird?

[38:10] Doesn't the Bible say judge not lest you

[38:12] should not be judged? Third Zen

[38:13] patriarch, the burdensome practice of

[38:15] judging.

[38:17] Who's judging reality?

[38:20] You must have done something and made up

[38:22] something else in there.

[38:25] And you did.

[38:26] What do you mean? I asked you, "How do

[38:28] impressions get left in your mind?" You

[38:30] hold them there.

[38:32] The consciousness is looking down.

[38:34] Experiences are coming in. You're You're

[38:36] just in a beautiful state. You're

[38:37] experiencing what's happening. You're

[38:38] growing, right? But then something

[38:41] happens that is so

[38:43] I guess the word is uncomfortable,

[38:45] challenging,

[38:47] that you don't let it go.

[38:50] You hold it in there. That's what

[38:51] suppression is and repression is, right?

[38:53] You grab it, you hold on to it, and you

[38:55] say this really wonderful thing. This

[38:57] experience was so bad I want to keep it.

[39:01] Is that not Freudian psychology?

[39:04] This experience was so bad I don't want

[39:07] to have had it, so I'm going to keep it.

[39:09] And that's what you did.

[39:11] And so they left it It's called an

[39:12] impression on your mind. In yoga, call

[39:15] it a samskara. An impression. What do

[39:17] you mean? It came in.

[39:19] I'm sorry it came in. I'm sorry it's

[39:21] just what happened. There it is. The

[39:23] reality happened. It rained on your

[39:24] birthday.

[39:25] It came in

[39:26] and it didn't make it through. Why? Cuz

[39:28] you didn't let it make it through. And

[39:29] don't you dare think there's anything

[39:31] else

[39:32] anybody else in there? Who's in there

[39:33] but you?

[39:34] You're in there. So if it got stuck in

[39:36] there, cuz you held it in there.

[39:39] And you do, don't you? Do you push

[39:41] things away?

[39:42] Do you boo like that? That's You're

[39:44] holding them. They can't pass through.

[39:46] They can't pass through. You hold it.

[39:48] When you hold it, you don't have to hold

[39:50] it for the rest of your life.

[39:52] Right or wrong, do things come up from

[39:53] your childhood? Is that not all therapy

[39:55] and everything's all about? That you got

[39:57] this stuff stuck in there. I need help

[39:59] to get it out. Well, stop holding it in,

[40:01] then it will come up. No, but it doesn't

[40:03] feel good if I hold if I don't push it

[40:05] back down. Well, then it's going to stay

[40:06] in there.

[40:07] So I need help.

[40:09] Anybody listening?

[40:11] Natural state is it comes in, it passes

[40:14] through, you learn what you need to

[40:15] learn,

[40:16] and you keep on trucking.

[40:18] Life is a happening place and you get to

[40:20] have experiences after experiences.

[40:23] See, they're important. I made them

[40:24] sound like they're meaningless. Well,

[40:25] they they are meaningless from the point

[40:27] of view you deal with them, but they're

[40:29] meaningful. Fine, you're learning,

[40:30] you're growing, having experiences. But

[40:33] then when you don't like an experience

[40:34] when you when you resist an experience,

[40:36] when the consciousness pushes it away,

[40:39] then it starts building these patterns

[40:40] inside and I don't have to go into

[40:42] psychology. That's the That's what ego

[40:44] is.

[40:45] That's where the I comes from. You made

[40:47] it up in your head. By what? By holding

[40:50] on to I like this, I don't like this, I

[40:52] like that, I didn't like that to happen,

[40:53] I wish that could have happened. You

[40:54] just build this I in there who's

[40:57] thinking all the time.

[40:59] Does it have to be in there? No. An

[41:00] enlightened master is not in there like

[41:02] that.

[41:03] It's not happening. It's passing

[41:04] through. They're experiencing and then

[41:06] they don't have to stay down here to

[41:08] deal with what they don't like or to

[41:09] deal with You have to deal with what you

[41:11] do like, you have to deal with what you

[41:12] don't like.

[41:13] You're just trying to make the don't

[41:14] like not to happen again, which I can't

[41:16] do and What a joke. We just said from

[41:19] the beginning we said the whole universe

[41:20] is running itself, but you're going to

[41:21] decide what you don't want to happen

[41:23] again.

[41:24] See, I wonder why there's tension.

[41:26] I wonder why there's anxiety. Wonder why

[41:28] there's suffering.

[41:30] If you build this model inside your

[41:32] head, which is not natural, I'm sorry.

[41:34] It is natural that the mind can take

[41:37] things in, think, and create, and do all

[41:40] kinds of beautiful things with things.

[41:42] You make art, you can make creativity,

[41:44] you can make computers, you make AI.

[41:46] There's all kinds of stuff the mind can

[41:48] do and the heart can create and so on.

[41:50] Yes, you do these things. Nobody's

[41:52] saying you renounce and push away and

[41:54] and leave the world behind. You dance

[41:57] with the world, but you don't say I

[41:59] don't want this to happen,

[42:01] especially when it already happened.

[42:02] [laughter]

[42:03] You know what you say? I can handle

[42:05] this.

[42:08] I can handle this.

[42:10] That's a nice thing to say. It came in

[42:14] Oh, I can handle that. And then it makes

[42:16] it through. Otherwise, you build these

[42:19] bricks. Every single thing you have

[42:20] stored in your mind is like a brick, and

[42:23] you build this concept of yourself. I'm

[42:25] going to like this. I'm going to doesn't

[42:27] like that. I hope this will happen. I

[42:28] hope that does not happen. I need to be

[42:30] like you build an ego. And I don't know

[42:32] what to say. He got one.

[42:34] And all of a sudden that mind doesn't

[42:35] stop talking. It just talks all the

[42:37] time. There's no peace. There's no

[42:39] freedom. There's no openness. There's

[42:42] just what I want and what I don't want.

[42:44] How can I get it? And why can't I have

[42:46] it? Why did she get it when I could have

[42:48] and the I shows up you know 99% of

[42:51] I, me, mine. That's what your mind.

[42:55] And you can find out that's the fall

[42:56] from the garden. Is you built this model

[42:58] inside your head and now you're only

[43:00] looking out at the world to see if it

[43:02] can be the way you want it to be.

[43:04] And that is why you think you're the

[43:06] doer. Because what you mean by the doer

[43:08] is how can I make things be the way I

[43:10] want them to be.

[43:12] A great being does not think like that.

[43:15] They start their entire day by saying,

[43:18] "Thank you. I'm back."

[43:20] I'm back.

[43:22] And then they get up and they sit there

[43:24] and say, "Let's boogie." And something

[43:26] comes in and it's something that flows

[43:29] with what what

[43:31] fit well with with how your mind was

[43:34] thinking. You say, "Thank you." You

[43:36] don't say, "I did it."

[43:37] I didn't do it.

[43:39] Even what you all spiritually say, "Oh,

[43:41] all of a sudden this thing happened. I

[43:44] God must have done it because it was

[43:45] just exactly what I wanted." What if it

[43:47] wasn't what you wanted? Did God do it?

[43:51] Do you see who is willing to pay

[43:52] attention to truth? You don't say that.

[43:56] You say it's a curse. It's a curse. It's

[43:58] not what it didn't want to happen. It is

[44:00] what you want to happen. It's a

[44:01] blessing. Anybody paying attention that

[44:04] ego is so hard to talk to the ego cuz it

[44:06] doesn't want to hear it. It doesn't want

[44:08] to step back from itself. And so you

[44:10] just get into a world where you wake up

[44:12] in the morning and you say, "Hi, I'm

[44:13] back.

[44:15] What's going to happen today? I don't

[44:17] know. Do you know? Of course you don't

[44:19] know. Does every day happen what you

[44:21] thought was going to happen?

[44:23] No, but every day you struggle to try

[44:25] and make it happen. You cling

[44:28] You cling to what you made in a model

[44:30] based on your past,

[44:32] what you built in your head that you

[44:33] want to happen, and then you try to

[44:34] fight with everything to make it happen.

[44:36] And now you raise a really interesting

[44:38] question, which I I don't have time to

[44:40] go I wish I could have more time with

[44:41] you, right? Is you you raise the

[44:44] question, what would happen

[44:46] if I wasn't struggling to make it be

[44:48] what I wanted?

[44:50] I'm going to repeat that question. What

[44:52] would happen if I wasn't constantly

[44:54] struggling with every moment of the day

[44:57] to try and make it be what I want it to

[44:59] be? When you got your whole eye was made

[45:01] up by stuff you couldn't handle from the

[45:03] past.

[45:05] Right? Man is the sum of the learned

[45:06] experiences.

[45:07] What if I wasn't fighting it? Would it

[45:09] all fall apart? Would the whole world

[45:11] fall apart if I wasn't making it stay

[45:13] together? I think we had the discussion

[45:15] earlier that you ain't doing squat.

[45:18] That planet would stay in orbit.

[45:21] Birds would still fly.

[45:23] Cells would still multiply and divide.

[45:25] Would life go on

[45:27] without your ego?

[45:29] But not the way I want it to. Yes, I I

[45:31] agree.

[45:32] And that is the eternal struggle. And

[45:35] what you will find out if you dare

[45:39] to even give it a moment,

[45:41] life knows what it's doing.

[45:45] If it can take a single fertilized cell

[45:48] and by itself turn it into a baby,

[45:51] and you don't impress me say, "No, no,

[45:53] you didn't do it by itself. DNA did it."

[45:55] What is DNA? A collection of molecules.

[45:58] What are they? A bunch of atoms.

[46:00] They made the baby, did they?

[46:02] You see, you accept that. Your mind

[46:03] says, say, "Well, no, DNA made it." It's

[46:06] the same thing.

[46:08] Okay?

[46:09] It's a miracle. How's that? A miracle

[46:11] made a baby out of a single cell.

[46:15] A miracle takes a baby acorn. I got to

[46:18] find a little tiny acorn the other day.

[46:20] I picked tiny acorn. It can make an oak

[46:23] tree.

[46:25] How can that happen?

[46:26] Oh, well, it knows how to take the dirt

[46:29] and break the minerals down and put them

[46:31] together and bind them together. You're

[46:32] not explaining anything. You're just

[46:34] saying, "Yes, it did all that."

[46:37] And you're going to find out that life

[46:38] does what it's doing. It just doesn't do

[46:41] what you want it to do.

[46:43] And that's what you found out, by the

[46:44] way, throughout your life, is if I don't

[46:46] do anything, it won't be what I want it

[46:48] to

[46:48] >> [laughter]

[46:49] >> That's what you found out, right? If I

[46:51] don't do anything, it's not going to be

[46:52] the way I want. You figured that one out

[46:54] quick, didn't you?

[46:56] Well, isn't it pretty amazing the way it

[46:58] is?

[46:59] Trees and birds and planets and stars

[47:02] and But, no, it has to be the way I

[47:04] want. And I told you where you get them.

[47:06] You study more closely. You read my

[47:08] books. Where did that I come from? You

[47:10] stored past experience that you couldn't

[47:13] handle.

[47:14] And you held on to them. And you made up

[47:16] concepts and views and opinions and

[47:18] preferences and hopes and dreams. Those

[47:20] are all mind. Those are things you build

[47:22] within your mind.

[47:24] Show me hope in life. Tell me how life

[47:27] makes hope. You're not doing it. It just

[47:29] does its thing.

[47:31] It's here now. It says, "Reality is a

[47:33] sacred thing."

[47:34] We make up this in our mind, and then we

[47:36] compare reality against what we made up,

[47:38] and it doesn't work out so good.

[47:40] So, says the patriarch, "The gray way is

[47:43] not difficult for those who have no

[47:45] preferences."

[47:47] Like, ego can hear that. What's the gray

[47:49] way? Enlightenment. Total open and such

[47:52] and ananda. Living in total ecstasy.

[47:55] Then you die? Yes, that's what you are.

[47:57] That's what's back there.

[47:59] But we've developed these preferences in

[48:01] our mind, these concepts and views and

[48:03] opinions and hopes and dreams, all in

[48:05] the mind. And now we look out into the

[48:07] world and it's not okay the way it is.

[48:10] Even though it's pretty perfect. Is the

[48:12] universe perfect?

[48:14] Are the stars where they need to be when

[48:15] they need to be and when shifts they all

[48:17] shift around it? Come on.

[48:20] Does your body heal itself?

[48:22] And lungs go in and out. Is the thing

[48:25] perfect?

[48:27] But but sometimes people die.

[48:29] Yep, part of the perfection. In fact,

[48:31] you got it wrong. They always die.

[48:34] >> [laughter]

[48:37] >> Have you seen what it means to be open

[48:39] to reality?

[48:41] What would it be

[48:43] to look at life and say thank you?

[48:47] Like you taught even in religious

[48:48] things, too, gratitude. That's why Why

[48:51] would I have gratitude?

[48:54] See? From the point of view of your ego,

[48:57] this thing you built in your mind,

[48:59] there is no gratitude unless you get

[49:01] what you want.

[49:02] I'm grateful that I got what I wanted

[49:04] today.

[49:05] The rest of it, forget it.

[49:08] How about you're grateful

[49:10] because you're conscious and you're

[49:12] experiencing the life that's passing

[49:14] before you?

[49:17] Everything changes. Doesn't seem like we

[49:19] had deep spiritual discussion. This is

[49:21] what spirituality is.

[49:23] What did Christ say? You must die to be

[49:26] reborn. You must let go of this personal

[49:30] that you say I am the doer and nothing's

[49:32] going to happen unless I do it. And then

[49:34] you're you're free, you're liberated,

[49:36] you're born back in the spirit, you're

[49:37] you're just totally open. All the great

[49:40] traditions taught you this, but we don't

[49:42] know how to listen, do we?

[49:43] Not at this level. Right? I'm probably

[49:45] bad to have this talk. Right? The

[49:48] question is, once in your life,

[49:51] will you wake up and realize that the

[49:53] truth is

[49:55] without life

[49:56] doing everything it's doing

[49:58] you ain't here. Nothing's happening.

[50:02] All right? But you built an ego in there

[50:04] that says, I need to do this. I need to

[50:06] run this. I need to control this. If I

[50:08] don't control this, it's not going to

[50:10] happen. All right? So, the bottom line

[50:12] is everything is happening by itself.

[50:15] I know it took a lot of words for me to

[50:17] try and convince you of that. Can we at

[50:19] least accept that that pretty much

[50:21] everything is happening by itself. And

[50:23] the part that you play in it is so small

[50:26] and you're going to die soon anyways.

[50:28] >> [laughter]

[50:30] >> All right?

[50:31] And then you let live a life that they

[50:32] they teach you. Here's what they teach

[50:34] you. He who dies with the most toys

[50:36] wins. No, he who dies with the most toys

[50:38] then that's it for us with them. That's

[50:40] Pharaohs try that and the pyramids.

[50:41] Right? What are you talking about?

[50:44] He or she who dies with ecstasy in their

[50:47] heart and total feeling of oneness with

[50:49] the whole universe that they win. They

[50:51] win. I win.

[50:53] Okay?

[50:55] Hoping this seminar was a lot. We talked

[50:56] a lot, okay? And it's tough talk cuz

[50:59] it's not talking about what you want to

[51:02] hear.

[51:03] Okay?

[51:04] But I said maybe it makes you feel small

[51:07] in the beginning talk that come on you

[51:09] nothing. Right? But you are the

[51:11] consciousness that's in there

[51:12] experiencing it and you are of God and

[51:15] that is the truth. You know, that

[51:16] consciousness is

[51:18] of God. It is of the universal

[51:21] consciousness. It's all the same thing.

[51:23] And the only difference a master does is

[51:24] they let go of staring at themselves and

[51:27] the consciousness by itself. They don't

[51:29] have to do it.

[51:30] If you're staring at yourself, you're

[51:31] seeing yourself. If you stop staring at

[51:34] yourself, you'll realize there's a whole

[51:36] universe behind you. Totally expansive.

[51:39] It's called merging with God. It's

[51:40] Christ my father and I are one. All the

[51:43] deep teachings

[51:44] are what is going on inside of you, who

[51:47] you are. So, you're a very great being

[51:50] there. I didn't want to make you feel

[51:51] small. You're making yourselves feel

[51:54] small by limiting yourself to this

[51:55] little thing

[51:58] that's not doing anything. See the

[51:59] difference?

[52:00] Yes? Okay.

[52:02] >> [gasps]

[52:03] [sighs]

[52:06] >> I would love to know that once in your

[52:08] life you're not going to get rid of the

[52:09] ego immediately.

[52:11] You're not.

[52:12] I want you to What do I do in the

[52:14] meantime? Watch.

[52:15] All I ask

[52:17] do not try to get that thing out of

[52:18] there. You can't rip it up by the roots.

[52:20] You can't kill it. You can't renounce

[52:22] and go move off somewhere. Can't leave

[52:24] or No, no, no.

[52:25] That doesn't get rid of stuff, all

[52:26] right?

[52:28] I dare you.

[52:29] Just notice what I've talked about.

[52:33] Notice the truth. Notice that all this

[52:36] stuff's going on without you doing it.

[52:38] It wouldn't go on in doing squat, right?

[52:41] Notice that you're in there noticing

[52:43] your thoughts.

[52:44] It's called witness consciousness.

[52:45] That's your step back. Are you in there?

[52:48] Do you have bad thought days?

[52:50] That's just bad hair days.

[52:52] Bad thought days?

[52:54] How do you know?

[52:56] My thoughts are bothering me. How do you

[52:58] know?

[53:00] How do you know?

[53:02] Cuz I'm in there. Thank you.

[53:04] And you can't help yourselves.

[53:06] All right? I'm in here. Just be aware

[53:09] that you're in there.

[53:11] And you will wake up naturally.

[53:13] It's not all about struggling and

[53:14] fighting doing all this stuff. Just be

[53:16] aware. And you say, "God, I'm in here."

[53:19] I'm in here. Who's in there?

[53:21] Who's in there?

[53:23] That's a deepest spiritual question,

[53:24] right? And what happens is because

[53:26] you're not hanging out with what you're

[53:28] looking at, you will more and more be

[53:30] seated naturally and then I don't

[53:31] struggle anymore.

[53:33] You'll naturally be seated in the one

[53:35] who's seeing. Why? Cuz you are the one

[53:37] who's seeing. And as you let go, it goes

[53:39] up. And all these chakras open and all

[53:42] this stuff you study and all the things

[53:44] you want spiritually, they all happen.

[53:46] They just all naturally happens cuz

[53:48] that's what's back there. But you're

[53:50] busy looking down here. Okay.

[53:52] I know I have to stop.

[53:54] Well, thank you for listening. I really

[53:56] I appreciate that you're willing to

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Singer describes 'I am the doer' as the belief that we personally make life unfold, which he calls one of the silliest notions a human mind can hold. He argues that breathing, heartbeat, cell activity, and the conditions that let us exist all happen without our involvement. The idea of personal control, he says, is built on impressions the mind holds about what is pleasant and painful.
The realm of doership is the small area of life we actually control, which Singer argues is far smaller than we assume. Many things must keep happening outside us, such as the planet staying in orbit, for any of our activity to be possible. Recognizing the size of this realm, he suggests, loosens the false sense of self built around being in charge.
No, the episode's own summary frames the ideal as participating in life without demanding that everything conform to our preferences. Singer's point is about the grip we hold on outcomes, not about abandoning work, love, or responsibility. Action can continue while the mind stops insisting that events must go a certain way.
The witness, which Singer calls the seat of consciousness, is the part of us that observes experience without being defined by what it sees. It contrasts with the voice in the head that narrates, judges, and insists it is the one in charge. The episode invites listeners to notice the difference between the two.
The episode is part of The Michael Singer Podcast, presented by Sounds True in partnership with Shanti Publications. Singer's books The Untethered Soul, The Surrender Experiment, and Living Untethered extend these ideas, and the description points to a free video series and a surrender course offered through Sounds True.
Singer argues that death shows the limits of the self we work so hard to protect. He lays out two possibilities, either you are there or you are not, and asks listeners to notice whether either one is truly a problem. The exercise is meant to reveal how much of our identity rests on assumptions about our own boundaries.
