Yoga Nidra and the Five Koshas: A Kayak Journey Through the Self

From Melanie Dawn Yoga & Wellness

Watch · 9

The room is quiet, and the instructions begin before anything else does. Lie down somewhere safe. Stretch out. Pad the back of the head, maybe with a soft pillow under the neck, and tuck the chin just enough to lengthen the back of the neck. Keep the eyes open, glancing toward the ceiling, and let the weight of the body start to soften. That is how Melanie Dawn opens her 45-minute Yoga Nidra practice, and it sets the terms for everything that follows: a slow, physical settling, then a voyage inward on a river that carries you deeper with each bend.

The recording, published on her YouTube channel in February 2024 under the title "Journey Through the 5 Koshas," is built on a single image. A red kayak waits on the shore. You climb in, push off, and float downstream through layers of experience until you reach a unified field of consciousness, then drift back to the bank and rebuild the body from the inside. The koshas of the title are the frame. The kayak is the vehicle. Understanding how the two fit together is the key to getting real value from the practice, whether you come to it for sleep or for something deeper.

What are the five koshas, and why build a practice around them?

The word kosha means sheath or covering. In the Taittiriya Upanishad, one of the older texts in the yogic tradition, the self is described as nested inside five of these layers, moving from the most dense to the most subtle: the food body (annamaya), the breath body (pranamaya), the mind (manomaya), the wisdom or discernment layer (vijnanamaya), and the bliss body (anandamaya). The model is a map. It suggests that you are not only a physical body or a stream of thoughts, but a set of coverings that can be explored one by one, toward the center.

The transcript excerpt available for this video does not name each sheath aloud, so it is worth being precise about what the recording does. It does not lecture on the koshas. Instead, it stages them as places on the river. The reader who knows the map will recognize the terrain. The reader who does not can simply follow the journey, and the layers reveal themselves through sensation.

How does the body become the first stop on the river?

The journey pauses early, and the first stop is practical. "This is where you gather your things for your trip," Melanie Dawn says around the ten-minute mark (10:00). The instruction is a slow inventory. Feel the feet, then the lower legs, then the hips and upper legs, then the waist down to the toes. Move up through the shoulders, chest, arms, and into the head: the forehead, eyes, face, ears, lips, chin. Each region is named, felt, and asked the same quiet question: what will you need for this trip?

This is the gross layer, the food body, and the practice treats it with respect rather than hurrying past it. Notice the craft in the method. The attention moves in a loop, left and right, top and bottom, so no part of the body is left out, and the phrase "whole body" returns again and again as a way of gathering scattered awareness back into one felt shape. For a listener trying to fall asleep, this is often where the body starts to release its hold, because it has been given a job it can do.

What happens when the river passes through the forest of breath?

Around the 13-minute mark the river widens, and the scene turns dark. "A tall forest tree is over 60 ft tall, so tall the sun is hidden behind the trees," the guidance goes, at 13:58. Here the practice moves into the breath body, and the imagery becomes the most sensory in the recording. Hearing sharpens. You hear "the breath of the trees breathing in unison." Your body is "being breathed by the trees."

The image is an unusual one: the breath is not something you control, but something you float inside. The instruction to count backward from eight to two, and then stop counting and let the breath rest on its own, is a deliberate handover. It asks the listener to stop managing the breath and let it become the medium of the journey. Many people experience this as the point where the practice stops feeling like an exercise and starts feeling like a current.

How do you drop the past and future from the mental layer?

The water grows muddier and seems to speed up and slow down, and the turbulence is the mind. This is where the practice does its most psychological work. "This is where you drop off all of your thoughts of the future, all of your thoughts in the past," Melanie Dawn says at 18:15. The instruction is not to silence thought but to witness it: watch thoughts of the future, witness thoughts of the past, and let the water steady as you become more present.

The recording then names what sits underneath the mental current. "In the mental layer we hold so many preferences," she says, "these preferences dictate our life in the way we see the world." The move is to neutralize the charge between opposites. As she puts it at 19:37, "neutralizing the charge between opposites is where freedom is found." This is a useful idea to sit with, and it is not a small one. The practice asks you to notice that your preferences, which feel like facts, are colored lenses, and that the freedom in the practice lives in their softening rather than their victory.

Why does the kayak sink, and what does heavy-and-light mean?

At around 20:07 the kayak begins to drop below the surface. "You feel so heavy, so heavy, so heavy, and then lightness comes." The water lifts you back to the top, and the instruction is to feel both heavy and light at once. This is one of the most physically convincing passages in the recording. The body is asked to hold two opposing sensations, and the holding itself becomes the teaching.

The practice then adds a lateral movement. Feel the weight shift to the right, and the kayak rolls right, the right side of the body pressing against the hull. Feel it shift left, and the left shoulder, arm, and leg press against the side. Then come back to center. The motion trains the listener to notice imbalance without reacting to it, and to find the midline again. For someone with a busy mind, the physical rocking can be an anchor: a sensation simple enough to follow when the thoughts are running.

What does dissolving into the ocean of consciousness feel like?

The river gathers speed. Things pass quickly, a bright blue moon, three small raccoons, an upside-down turtle, floating past. "None of it is attached to the next moment," the guidance notes, "all of it is experienced exactly as is." Then the current carries you into the ocean, "the unified field of consciousness where all rivers meet." The language is expansive: total absorption, whole body relaxation, dissolution, reunion with "the wholeness of all that is."

This is the climax of the journey, and it is also the most fragile moment. The recording acknowledges that you may get pulled away, following a thought or an object. The instruction is gentle: let yourself drop softly back inside the kayak and relax into the field. The message is that the ocean is not something you have to force; it is something you allow.

How does the body come back together after the ocean?

The return is a rebuilding. The recording asks you to collect the body where it separated from "all that is," and to become an individual expression of it again. Piece by piece, the practice reassembles the body through a ceremony of affirmations: "I am" the right leg, the left leg, the organs, the lungs "through which you communicate and receive life," the heart, each finger "with a different expression of you," the wisdom of the throat, the beauty of the face. By the end, the whole body is described as glowing, radiating, illuminated.

Other affirmations appear earlier, at about 5:34: "I am trusting. I am completely at peace. Letting go of control, letting go of predictable outcome." Later, in the closing stretch, the phrases shift toward self-worth: "I'm worthy, I'm safe, I trust." Taken together, they mark the arc of the recording. The early affirmations are about release. The later ones are about return.

Why does the sacred pause matter at the end?

The journey ends on the grass. Step out of the kayak, lie down, and pause. "This is the sacred pause that happens at the beginning and the end," Melanie Dawn says near 32:56. "In between, there is nothing to do here." The pause is not a throwaway. It is where the nervous system is given time to integrate what it has just traveled through, and where the practitioner is invited to scan the body that carried them "into the unknown." The recording closes with the chant and a final breath, after which the practice is complete.

Who is this practice for, and what should you know before pressing play?

The video's description frames it for "restful sleep or profound healing," and the practice is long: 45 minutes of spoken guidance with extended silences. Listen for the rhythm rather than the imagery alone. Some listeners will want to fall asleep before the kayak reaches the ocean, and that is a reasonable use of the recording. Others will find the koshas most useful when they come back and listen with attention.

Two cautions are worth stating plainly. The channel's own disclaimer advises consulting a physician about the applicability of its recommendations, and that is good advice for anyone with a medical condition or who is new to this kind of practice. The auto-generated captions also contain errors, including unintelligible phrases in the mantra and affirmation sections, so a written transcript should be treated as a rough guide. The practice itself is spoken and felt, not read.

Where to go from here

Start by listening once, lying down, with the eyes open and the head supported, as the opening instructs. On a second listen, try to name the layers as they arrive: the inventory of the body, the forest of breath, the mental current, the heavy-and-light kayak, the ocean, the return. Notice where the practice asks you to hold two things at once, and where it asks you to let go of one. Then, if you want to go further into the tradition behind the map, the Taittiriya Upanishad is the place the five-sheath model comes from. The river is the teacher. The koshas are the terrain. The practice is simply to float.

[30:43] [Music]

[30:46] skull I

[31:15] Transcendent I

[31:16] [Music]

[31:26] am

[31:39] floating slow long

[31:46] circles beginning at

[31:50] the head of the

[31:53] river where the two rivers

[31:56] join

[32:00] you have

[32:12] returned release the

[32:24] kayak step back to shore

[32:38] lay down on the

[32:47] grass

[32:53] pause this is the sacred

[32:55] [Music]

[32:56] pause that happens at the beginning and

[32:59] the

[33:03] end the in

[33:05] [Music]

[33:26] between

[33:30] there is nothing to do

[33:42] here begin to scan the

[33:46] body this body that has carried

[33:50] you

[33:52] into the

[33:56] unknown without this

[34:00] tool we remain at the

[34:04] surface unable to see what

[34:10] experiences what

[34:13] stories what we tell

[34:17] ourself and how we see the

[34:21] world through the lens of our

[34:26] past how we see

[34:30] ourself through the lens of

[34:34] [Music]

[34:35] rejection

[34:40] unworthiness when the truth

[34:44] is we are

[34:46] [Music]

[34:52] infinite and you can begin to

[34:56] slowly start to move the wrists and

[35:03] ankles in yoga NRA we move a lot of

[35:06] energy and it happens without moving the

[35:09] body at all but energy can become

[35:13] blocked in your wrists and your ankles

[35:15] so moving them clockwise and then

[35:18] counterclockwise before you fully

[35:23] awaken and then

[35:25] after moving through through multiple

[35:28] rotations of your bigger joints come

[35:32] back into complete Stillness and feel

[35:35] the heat as it moves through the

[35:38] joints and you're connecting with your

[35:40] energy

[35:43] there that is how much power you carry

[35:46] in your body at all

[35:54] times and now we'll take a Bend through

[35:57] the knees and if you have enough space

[36:00] and you're um physically cleared to do

[36:03] this I'd like to uh move the body just a

[36:08] little bit you can opt out and stay in

[36:10] chiasa or

[36:12] sit but to fully release the energy

[36:16] through the spinal cord if you take a

[36:18] Bend through your knees and plant the

[36:20] soles of your feet into the

[36:22] Earth and then arms could come out to a

[36:26] tea so the fingers reaching away from

[36:28] each other at shoulder

[36:31] height and dropping the knees softly

[36:35] over to the left really

[36:39] slowly and just before they meet the

[36:42] ground or the extent of their

[36:46] Mobility come back through Center and

[36:49] over to the

[36:52] right and we'll do this with longer

[36:55] slower breaths inhal to rise exhales to

[37:00] fall and eventually after the spine has

[37:04] been warmed enough times left to right

[37:07] we'll land knees over to the

[37:17] left and if you're there and it feels

[37:20] like you have enough space in your neck

[37:22] you could turn your gaze your eyesight

[37:24] to the

[37:26] right

[37:39] and whenever you feel complete there

[37:41] we'll come back up through center with

[37:43] an

[37:44] inhale realign the hips because they'll

[37:47] often uh go off on one side or the

[37:51] other and then drop the knees over to

[37:54] your other

[37:55] side and and this time once you land

[37:58] there gaze turns

[38:00] left and if you have any hovering of the

[38:03] knees or legs that's completely and

[38:06] totally common I do too you can always

[38:09] put a pillow between the knees or just

[38:12] underneath the bottom

[38:14] leg and now settling into your breath

[38:18] once again so becoming really aware of

[38:21] how your belly is moving and your rib

[38:24] cage is

[38:26] moving

[38:27] and we're just slowly waking up our

[38:29] awareness we want pretty deep inside the

[38:33] practice so coming back out it's almost

[38:37] like rising up from the bottom of the

[38:40] ocean and we'll come back to center with

[38:43] an inhale and you could take a hug of

[38:46] the knees over your heart if you have

[38:48] this

[38:50] space and then slowly make your way up

[38:54] to seated we'll be closing our Yoga

[38:57] Nidra in seated meditation tonight and

[39:01] this is not something that happens all

[39:04] the time but it is a really great

[39:07] practice to slowly bring your awareness

[39:10] back to your

[39:15] body a good comfortable meditation seat

[39:19] is the sit bones connected to the Earth

[39:21] and if you have tight hips you might

[39:23] want to put a pillow underneath the sit

[39:25] bones so that that's your anchor your

[39:28] connection and a block or two underneath

[39:31] each knee is sometimes needed and

[39:35] necessary and sometimes people can't

[39:37] even sit with their legs crossed so you

[39:39] could take whatever seat is comfortable

[39:42] and if a wall works that's good

[39:45] too and once you arrive wherever you're

[39:48] comfortable you'll just gently tuck the

[39:50] chin towards the clavicle once again and

[39:54] option to close the eyes or have them

[39:56] looking soft ly in front of

[40:06] you there were no hand cues so notice

[40:10] where your hands are and if this is in

[40:14] some way an energetic protection or a

[40:17] guard or if you're actually holding your

[40:20] hands in a position or a place that is

[40:24] creating

[40:25] tension and we might want to even hug

[40:28] the shoulders up to the ears and take a

[40:31] deep breath in and then hold the

[40:33] shoulders at the ears hold the breath

[40:35] for

[40:37] three

[40:39] 2 one big exhale

[40:43] out subtle lift of the heart gentle tuck

[40:47] of the chin eyes closed or gaze

[40:51] softened starting to turn attention only

[40:55] towards the breath

[41:15] notice

[41:17] the external energies that are happening

[41:21] around

[41:21] [Music]

[41:25] you

[41:31] and from the energies go into

[41:37] sounds what sounds are happening around

[41:47] you take sound to a subtler level what

[41:52] sounds are happening within you and this

[41:54] might be hearing the

[41:57] heartbeat in your

[42:02] ear maybe attuning the hearing enough to

[42:05] hear it in your

[42:14] wrist becoming aware of the

[42:18] weight of gravity resting on your

[42:21] shoulders crown of your head the tops of

[42:24] your

[42:25] knees whole body weighted heavy in

[42:35] gravity and this is a beautiful

[42:37] opportunity to bring with you your

[42:40] desire for how you wish to see the world

[42:42] and be seen I am your I am

[42:46] statement I'm loved I'm valued I'm seen

[42:49] I'm worthy I'm safe I trust I

[42:52] Surrender I am will resonate with your

[42:55] heart you'll recognize it

[42:57] and bring it into your body once

[43:01] again and if you remember in the Nidra

[43:04] this uh I

[43:07] am sound created a color if you want to

[43:11] see that color again and maybe even just

[43:14] inquire why that color it's a good time

[43:18] to do that deeper

[43:20] inquiry symbolism is so much more than

[43:24] surface color can mean a whole lot of

[43:27] things that you can

[43:32] unlock and then before you go if you

[43:35] want to ask your highest self if there's

[43:37] anything that you need to know or take

[43:40] away from this

[43:43] practice if there's anything the highest

[43:45] self feels called to share what do I

[43:48] need to

[43:55] know

[44:01] and even noticing if there is like a

[44:03] really loud inner voice I need to get

[44:05] going slow that right down and ask it

[44:23] why and we'll close our practice

[44:27] with three full deep breath in through

[44:31] the nose and out through the

[44:33] mouth breathing in nice and slow in

[44:37] through the nose down into the

[44:41] belly and a big empty

[44:46] out another breath

[44:49] in feeling the belly expanding in all

[44:52] four directions widening the rib

[44:55] cage and open mouth release you could

[44:59] even sigh that one

[45:02] out and last full breath here your

[45:05] biggest breath the one that is going to

[45:08] set you off as you unwind for your

[45:12] evening big

[45:17] release the practice of Yoga Nidra is

[45:20] now complete Harry om tatat hry tatat

Frequently Asked Questions

The five koshas are sheaths or layers of the self described in the Taittiriya Upanishad: the food body, breath body, mind, wisdom layer, and bliss body. In this 45-minute practice, the layers are staged as places along a river, moving from the physical body inventory to the breath, the mental current, and finally the unified ocean of consciousness.
The video's description positions the practice for restful sleep as well as healing, and the guided body awareness and slow breath imagery are designed to settle the body. The recording is 45 minutes long, so many listeners may drift off before the final stages. The channel recommends consulting a physician about the applicability of its recommendations.
The kayak is the vehicle for moving through the layers of awareness. You float downstream past the body, the breath-filled forest, the muddy mental water, and the ocean, then return to shore to reassemble the body. The image gives the listener a concrete way to track progress without having to think about the philosophy.
In this recording, Melanie Dawn describes the sacred pause as the stillness that happens at the beginning and end of the practice, when you lie on the grass after the kayak journey. She says there is nothing to do in the in-between, which gives the body and nervous system time to integrate the experience.
The practice asks you to witness thoughts of the future and past without following them, as the water steadies and you become present. It also invites you to notice preferences that shape how you see the world, and to neutralize the charge between opposites rather than favor one side.
In the recording, the kayak sinks under the weight of the body, then lifts back to the surface, and the instruction is to feel both heavy and light at once. The practice then shifts the weight left and right to train balance and a return to center, so the sensation becomes an anchor rather than a puzzle.
Yes, but treat the auto-generated captions as a rough guide. Some mantra and affirmation phrases are garbled, and the practice is designed to be heard and felt rather than read. Listening once in full, then returning to specific sections, is the most useful approach.
