Why You Suffer: The PersonalPatterns Keeping You Stuck

Sounds True
Sounds True

Most of us move through the world convinced that our unhappiness comes from external circumstances—the job we didn't get, the relationship that ended, the person who said something hurtful. We suffer because things aren't the way we wanted them to be. But what if that's only half the story? What if the real source of suffering lies in the gap between how the world actually unfolds and how we've decided it should unfold?

This is where the work begins. Not with changing the world, but with understanding why we've become so invested in our particular vision of how things should be in the first place.

Read · 6 sections

The Personalization of Suffering

Suffering isn't universal in its cause—it's deeply personal. While one person agonizes over whether a friend will call at a specific time, another person sits peacefully, indifferent to the outcome. While one person fixates on a partner dancing too closely with someone else, another celebrates their loved one's happiness. The same external event produces suffering in one person and peace in another. This is the crucial insight: the suffering isn't created by the event. It's created by what you've decided the event means.

Consider rain. You don't suffer because it's raining unless you don't want it to rain. A farmer waiting for crops to grow might welcome the storm. A person who simply doesn't care whether it rains remains unmoved. The rain itself is neutral. Your suffering is the friction between the rain and your preference against it.

This pattern holds across every domain of human experience. You suffer when you want things to be a certain way and they aren't. You suffer when you don't want things to be a certain way and they are, or might be, or were. That's it. That's the complete mechanism. Everything else is variation on this theme.

Where Your Preferences Come From

Now comes the harder question: Why do you want what you want? Why do your preferences take the exact shape they do?

You didn't arrive on this planet with a detailed blueprint of how things should be. Your preferences were constructed over time, shaped by every experience you've had, every story you were told, every moment when someone loved you or hurt you or disappointed you. If your parents rewarded achievement, you learned to want recognition. If your family lived in financial scarcity, you learned to want security. If you experienced rejection, you learned to be vigilant about acceptance. None of this is conscious. It's simply how humans learn to navigate the world.

The problem is that while your preferences were made by your personal history, the world operates according to the laws of cause and effect—not according to your personal preferences. The universe doesn't know what you want. It simply unfolds according to its own logic. Your boss doesn't promote you because of your dreams. Your partner doesn't call because you decided they should. Your body doesn't remain young because you prefer it that way. The world follows its own rules, indifferent to your investment in specific outcomes.

So you're left in a permanent struggle. You're constantly trying to force external reality to match an internal blueprint that was created by your past. This is the engine of psychological suffering.

The Cost of Holding On

Every preference you hold creates what might be called an "impression"—a stored pattern of energy in your consciousness. When that pattern gets triggered by the outside world, it activates. If someone challenges your need for recognition, the impression fires. If circumstances threaten your sense of security, the impression fires. And when it fires, it doesn't feel good. It feels like a battle. It creates tension in your body, turbulence in your mind, and contraction in your heart.

The irony is that we often don't realize we have a choice about this. We assume that our impressions—our learned patterns of like and dislike—are somehow necessary. We think we need them to survive, to achieve, to protect ourselves. But what if that's not true?

Consider someone with a deep impression around jealousy, formed perhaps by a past relationship ending because a partner was unfaithful. Now, years later, whenever their current partner interacts with someone else, the impression activates. They find themselves watching where hands are placed, monitoring proximity, analyzing tone of voice. They're suffering in real time because of a pattern installed by an old event. The current partner has done nothing wrong. The threat is imaginary. But the suffering is completely real.

The Path to Release

This is where genuine compassion becomes possible. When you understand that people suffer because they're trying to force the world to match their personal preferences, and those preferences come from unexamined patterns formed in the past, you begin to see suffering clearly. You don't pity people who are struggling. Instead, you recognize: they don't understand that they don't have to suffer. They're caught in a pattern. They're ignoring the truth—not intentionally, but because they're too lost in the suffering itself to see the way out.

The way out isn't to change the world. It's to release the stored patterns of like and dislike. This is the opposite of what we're usually taught. We're taught to strengthen our preferences, to defend them, to fight harder to make the world match them. But the real liberation comes from the opposite direction: softening your grip on how things should be.

This doesn't mean becoming passive or accepting genuine injustice. It means learning to distinguish between what you can actually influence and what you can't, and releasing your demand that the uninfluenceable aspects of reality conform to your preferences. It means working on yourself—on the impressions and patterns that have been installed in you—rather than perpetually working on the world.

Freedom and Compassion

As these stored patterns begin to release, something remarkable happens. A great peace emerges. Not because the world has finally conformed to your preferences—it hasn't and it won't. But because you're no longer in constant friction with reality. You're no longer suffering the gap between how things are and how you've decided they should be.

And from that peace comes something else: genuine compassion for others who are still struggling. You can see them clearly now. You can see that their suffering isn't caused by their circumstances—it's caused by their resistance to their circumstances. You can see that there's a way for them not to suffer, even if external conditions don't improve. You understand this from your own experience.

This compassion isn't sentimental. It's not about feeling sorry for people. It's a clear-eyed recognition that they don't have to be trapped in their suffering, combined with the knowledge that you can't force them to let go of their patterns any more than someone else could have forced you. All you can do is embody the possibility. All you can do is show, through your own freedom, that another way exists.

Where to go from here

The invitation is to begin examining your own preferences. Notice what you're insisting the world be like. Notice when circumstances don't match your expectations and observe the suffering that arises. Ask yourself: Is this preference worth the suffering? Can you release your demand that this particular thing happen this particular way? What would it feel like to let it go?

This isn't a one-time realization. The patterns run deep. But each time you notice one and release it—each time you choose to be at peace with what is instead of fighting for what should be—you discover a little more of the peace and freedom that's available on the other side of struggle. And in that discovery, you become someone who can truly see and embrace the suffering of others, without trying to fix them, without pity, simply with the understanding that freedom is possible.

[0:47] Jagrative J masters.

[0:50] It's not difficult

[0:52] to understand what compassion is.

[0:55] People suffer.

[0:57] People suffer. Not just in war zones and

[1:01] not just because of detention centers or

[1:04] financial problems.

[1:06] People suffer. Yes, there's degrees of

[1:09] suffering, but in general, people

[1:11] suffer. They worry about things. They

[1:13] have anxieties. They have fears. They

[1:16] suffer. And you have to get a little bit

[1:19] out of that to understand what

[1:22] compassion is. Compassion is you look at

[1:25] the suffering. It's not that you feel

[1:27] sorry. It's not sympathy. Compassion is

[1:29] not sympathy.

[1:30] Compassion is an understanding

[1:33] that you don't have to suffer

[1:36] but you are suffering.

[1:38] That creates compassion. There is a way

[1:41] out.

[1:42] I can't make you take it. A person can't

[1:45] make another person not suffer.

[1:48] But when you look at somebody who's

[1:50] suffering and you realize there's a way

[1:53] that they don't have to suffer,

[1:56] it's a lack of understanding, a lack of

[1:59] I always realize the word ignorance

[2:01] means ignorance. They're ignoring the

[2:04] truth, but they can't see the truth.

[2:06] Why? Because they're too lost in their

[2:08] suffering. [sighs]

[2:09] So compassion is a very beautiful thing.

[2:12] It doesn't really try to change

[2:14] somebody. It just understands. so deeply

[2:19] that it creates this opening form of

[2:22] pain but a form of deep opening in the

[2:26] heart of the person that experiences

[2:28] compassion more so because they know the

[2:31] person does not have to suffer. Now what

[2:33] does it mean you don't have to suffer?

[2:36] There are many different levels of that.

[2:39] Let's start. Okay, start with war zones

[2:42] and people are dying and families are

[2:45] being killed and kidnapped and that's

[2:48] very hard not to suffer when that

[2:50] stuff's going on. It's possible when I

[2:52] finish we're going to talk about it. It

[2:54] is possible not to suffer. Period. No

[2:57] matter what's going on, it's possible

[2:59] not to suffer. But that's extremely

[3:01] deep. But that's not where most of

[3:03] suffering is. Most of suffering isn't

[3:06] even physiological. Most suffering's

[3:08] psychological. You're just worry. You

[3:11] have anxieties. You you're uptight and

[3:14] and you have things you want to be a

[3:16] certain way and they're not that way and

[3:17] it makes you suffer. You have things

[3:19] you're afraid that will be a way you

[3:20] don't want them to be and it makes you

[3:22] suffer. It's a psychological suffering

[3:25] is all pervasive and everybody's got it.

[3:27] Doesn't matter how much money you have.

[3:29] Doesn't matter male or female. Doesn't

[3:30] matter old or young. It goes on in

[3:33] there. And that's the one that it is

[3:36] more reasonable for people to learn that

[3:39] they don't have to suffer. You start

[3:41] with why are you suffering? Well, let's

[3:44] analyze it. Okay? Do you all suffer for

[3:48] exactly the same reason all the time?

[3:50] Even you. And do you suffer the same

[3:53] reason other people do or is it kind of

[3:56] like a personal thing? Suffering. You

[3:58] suffer because this happened. You suffer

[4:00] because that didn't happen. You suffer

[4:02] because this person said this. You're

[4:03] suffering because the person didn't say

[4:04] this. You're suffering because you have

[4:05] what you thought the person was saying

[4:06] that they might not have said. So you're

[4:07] suffering trying to figure out whether

[4:08] they said it or not. But the person next

[4:10] to you is not suffering about that.

[4:12] They're suffering about what they're

[4:13] doing. So the first thing you do to

[4:15] understand suffering is pervasive. It's

[4:17] all pervasive. But it's not universal in

[4:19] its cause. It is very personal in its

[4:22] cause. First of all, do you all agree?

[4:24] Do you understand that

[4:26] that which makes you suffer? She

[4:27] couldn't care less. And and it's just

[4:29] like you have to understand if you want

[4:32] to understand suffering, understand

[4:34] what's going on, you have to start with

[4:36] the truth. The truth is your suffering

[4:38] is different than everybody else's. And

[4:40] your suffering very likely yesterday was

[4:43] different than will be today. It's a

[4:45] constantly changing thing and it

[4:47] absolutely is not the same really with

[4:50] any two people. So what's it all about?

[4:55] You take a look at it and say, "Well,

[4:56] why? If it's that personal, what's

[4:59] causing it?" And you understand, and we

[5:02] talk about this all the time, but is

[5:04] it's the foundation of understanding

[5:06] life and suffering in people is you

[5:09] suffer when you want things to be a

[5:12] certain way and they're not. That's

[5:14] anything from disappointment to true

[5:18] anxiety and and issues and problems

[5:20] because things aren't the way you want.

[5:22] All right? And you suffer because you

[5:25] don't want things to be a certain way

[5:27] and you either think they might be, they

[5:29] were, or they are. How's that? That's

[5:32] the only reasons everybody suffers.

[5:34] That's the universal aspect of

[5:36] suffering. You have made up in your head

[5:39] and it's very personal what you want and

[5:42] what you don't want. There's I'll talk

[5:43] about where that came from in a minute.

[5:45] But you have, haven't you? All right.

[5:48] You know what you want and you know what

[5:51] you don't want. And if what you don't

[5:53] want is happening, you suffer.

[5:56] If you don't want might happen, you

[5:59] suffer. If you don't want used to happen

[6:02] or did happen, you suffer. So it takes

[6:05] two to tango. It takes you in there

[6:09] having decided what you don't want and

[6:11] situations outside to unfold in a way

[6:15] that they did are or might not match

[6:19] what you want or match what you don't

[6:21] want. Do you understand that? Really, I

[6:24] can't go on if you don't understand

[6:25] this. Do you see it? See how true it is?

[6:28] Okay. You don't suffer because it's

[6:31] raining unless you don't want it to

[6:32] rain.

[6:34] You don't suffer because somebody didn't

[6:36] call when they said they would. Unless

[6:38] you really, really are invested in them

[6:40] calling at that time. Somebody says,

[6:42] "Oh, I only get a chance. I'll call

[6:43] you." And you're sitting by the phone

[6:45] all the time. You suffer. If somebody

[6:47] says, "Hey, I'll get you. I'll give you

[6:48] a call." You don't think about it. They

[6:50] say, "When you get a chance,

[6:52] you cause the suffering because you say,

[6:56] "No, she said she'd call." But if you

[6:58] didn't care whether she called or not,

[7:01] if it was not a big deal to you, then

[7:03] you don't suffer. So it is you making up

[7:06] in your mind what you want and what you

[7:09] don't want. And then the world unfolds

[7:12] and depending upon how those two things

[7:14] match each other, you're either happy as

[7:17] could be or you suffer. Do you get that

[7:20] part down? I could send you home. You've

[7:22] learned everything you need to learn. In

[7:25] other words, you're causing the

[7:26] suffering. I am not. Yes, you are. I

[7:31] This person got a new car. Fine. They

[7:34] got a new car. That's nice. They got a

[7:36] new car. You wanted to have the new car.

[7:40] They got exactly the car you wanted to

[7:42] have.

[7:44] Who caused that? The person getting a

[7:46] car? No. You having a preconceived

[7:50] notion of how you want things to be? Do

[7:53] you have those kind of notions?

[7:55] preconceived notions about how you want

[7:57] things to be and how you don't want

[7:58] things to be. Can we be honest? Do you

[8:01] ever not? All right. Therefore, you

[8:04] suffer. I'm telling you that is a cause

[8:06] of suffering. It's a combination of you

[8:09] deciding what you want to be at whatever

[8:12] you can be totally invested in it, a

[8:14] little bit invested in it, but to

[8:15] whatever degree you're invested in it,

[8:16] that's the degree you suffer.

[8:18] I am very jealous. I in past

[8:22] relationships I've lost them to friends

[8:24] and I've lost my sign other to to people

[8:27] and and I I just turned out I'm very

[8:29] jealous now and now my significant other

[8:32] is dancing with somebody else. I'm

[8:34] watching very carefully

[8:37] >> where's the hands and how on the back is

[8:39] it? How close are they dancing? Are they

[8:42] talking or they talking about yes or no?

[8:45] Okay.

[8:47] or I love that people I love love love

[8:50] other people. I love to see them dance

[8:53] and be happy with each other, especially

[8:55] if they're my friends as opposed to it

[8:58] was your friend who took your last phone

[9:00] away. Now I care friend over friend

[9:03] stuff. How many ways can I say it so you

[9:06] understand?

[9:07] You're deciding how it is. But it is

[9:10] truly suffering. So when things don't

[9:13] match what you want, this psychological

[9:15] suffering takes place which by the way

[9:19] can become physiological. Do you

[9:21] understand that? Ulcers,

[9:24] truly muscle cramps, headaches, all

[9:26] kinds of things can happen because the

[9:29] tension and anxiety that gets created by

[9:32] the world coming in and not making it

[9:35] inside of you nicely. It hits all your

[9:38] stuff can get come down into the body.

[9:40] the energy energy flow gets messed up

[9:42] and then by the time it comes into the

[9:44] body you're not getting clean energy yet

[9:46] that's what acupuncture is all about

[9:47] that's what ta all these different

[9:49] things are about okay and more and more

[9:51] western science is is understanding that

[9:55] your mental state affects your physical

[9:57] state you have to be a genius to figure

[9:59] that out now you have physical suffering

[10:01] as well as mental suffering I'm telling

[10:03] you the cause is that you decided how

[10:07] you wanted to be and now it's either not

[10:10] that way or it is that way. Therefore,

[10:12] it makes you feel good. It makes you

[10:13] feel bad. And what we end up doing,

[10:15] which causes more suffering, is we say,

[10:18] "Okay, I feel good when it's the way I

[10:20] want it to be. I feel bad when it's not

[10:22] the way I want it to be. I need to make

[10:24] sure it be the way I want it to be."

[10:27] That's my job in life. And you all take

[10:29] that on. And that's very sad. That

[10:31] That's where compassion comes in.

[10:33] Running around like chickens with your

[10:35] heads cut off. Not just you

[10:36] particularly, but human race. running

[10:38] around like chickens with their head cut

[10:39] off trying to make the outside world be

[10:42] the way you've decided you want it to be

[10:43] inside. Fair enough. How do you define

[10:46] success and failure? I guarantee every

[10:49] one of you define it differently.

[10:51] Success is I got fired. I lost my job. I

[10:53] can go travel around Europe. I always

[10:55] wanted to do that. I just bum around,

[10:56] right? Failure is I got fired from my

[10:59] job. Oh my god, what are I gonna do?

[11:00] What are people gonna think of me?

[11:01] You're doing it. It's a question of how

[11:04] it matches what you decided inside and

[11:08] then it causes all the anxiety or

[11:10] sometimes you feel joy because it did

[11:12] match. But you kind of know, every one

[11:14] of you kind of know that it's not just

[11:17] kind of match by itself. You have some

[11:20] work to do, don't you? You go out there

[11:23] and make people like you. Go out there

[11:25] and make somebody love you. Make sure

[11:27] they love you. They keep loving you.

[11:29] Make sure you act in the way they want

[11:30] you to act. Make sure come on. You have

[11:33] this thing called what's it called? Oh,

[11:34] insecurity in a relationship. What does

[11:37] that mean? There's a way I want it to be

[11:39] and it might not be that way and I

[11:41] wanted to be that way and I don't even

[11:43] know what to do to make it be that way

[11:44] and now I'm anxious and therefore I'm

[11:46] acting weird. Ever been there? Okay.

[11:49] People live there.

[11:52] What's the cause? You have a way you

[11:56] need it to be to be okay. In other

[11:58] words, you're not okay within yourself.

[12:01] You have the outside world needs to

[12:03] unfold in a way that makes you feel

[12:06] right. And what determine how you feel

[12:07] right? You do. You do. It comes down to

[12:09] you do this inside. It's yours. Okay?

[12:13] And then basically you've caught on that

[12:16] if it matches what you want, you feel

[12:18] really good. If it doesn't match what

[12:20] you want, you feel disappointed. If it

[12:22] match what you don't want, you get

[12:24] really uptight and really bothered. So

[12:26] therefore, you have a job to do. What's

[12:29] your job? I know what your job is. Stop

[12:31] it. If you're making this stuff up

[12:34] inside,

[12:36] make it up different.

[12:38] Be happy. Just sit there and say,

[12:41] "However it is turns me on." The hippie

[12:44] hippie talk back to the 60s. Have a good

[12:47] time. You're here on a little planet in

[12:50] the middle of nowhere spinning around

[12:52] for a handful of years making yourself

[12:54] suffer because you decided that you

[12:57] wanted to be a certain way for you to be

[12:58] okay. Why don't you just decide I need

[13:01] to fix that part of me so that I'm okay

[13:04] with how it is and I'm just enjoying

[13:06] this journey no matter what happens.

[13:08] Everything's beautiful. The sun is

[13:10] shining and if it's not shining good.

[13:12] It's not so hot. If it is shining oh

[13:14] it's beautiful. If you're okay inside,

[13:17] it's all okay when it comes in. Do you

[13:19] understand that? I'm leaving off the

[13:21] extremes for now. But I'm talking about

[13:22] the psychological suffering that

[13:24] everybody goes through. It's because

[13:25] they decided how they want it to be. And

[13:28] then they double down on it by saying

[13:30] this how I want it to be, how I don't

[13:32] want it to be. Now I need to go outside

[13:35] every minute of my life. Don't you make

[13:37] believe what I'm talking about. and be

[13:39] anxious and self-conscious and insecure

[13:42] and tense to make sure that I'm doing

[13:45] what I can to manipulate everyone I

[13:48] know. You manipulate your friends just

[13:49] as much as you're not friends because

[13:51] you want them to keep being your friend.

[13:54] You careful. Ever walk from a

[13:55] conversation with a friend and when it's

[13:57] over outside, it's not over inside. Oh

[14:00] god, I can't believe I said that. How

[14:01] wonder?

[14:03] Yes or no? Okay, don't give me friend or

[14:06] [clears throat] not friend. The only

[14:07] thing that's going on is you are trying

[14:10] to make the world be the way you need it

[14:12] to be. So when it comes in, you feel

[14:14] good about it instead of I got some work

[14:17] to do in here because I made this stuff

[14:20] up how I want it to be. I I here she's

[14:23] she's very short. Okay. I wish I was

[14:26] taller. I wish I was taller. She's in

[14:29] residency to become a neurosurgeon, but

[14:31] she's very short. So how do you do the

[14:33] operation? Because the table's up there.

[14:35] So she had a step stool to climb a st

[14:39] to get to the head. [laughter] So what

[14:41] are you gonna do? Run around. Oh my god,

[14:44] I wish I wasn't short. That's just

[14:45] crazy. Enjoy being short. Short people

[14:48] have more fun. It can be however you

[14:51] want. No, I didn't say the outside can

[14:54] be however you want. They're teaching

[14:55] you that. I don't want to talk about it.

[14:57] Right? I said your interaction with the

[15:00] outside can be however you want. Why?

[15:02] cuz you're more than half of the

[15:04] interaction. You're the one who decided

[15:06] how it needs to be a certain way. If

[15:08] it's not that way, you get up tight. You

[15:09] know, you do and you feel no question,

[15:12] no question that if it is the way you

[15:14] want it to be, you feel good. There, I

[15:16] gave it to you. How often do you think

[15:18] when you wake up in the morning that's

[15:20] all going to be the way you want it to

[15:21] be? That's your first thought. Oh boy,

[15:23] it's all going to be exactly the way I

[15:24] want it to be. Everything behaved just

[15:26] the way I want. I could trust what I

[15:27] wanted. Everything will be exactly the

[15:29] way I want to be. Never. Okay. So, you

[15:32] wake up and you realize I have a choice.

[15:35] I don't have a choice as to whether

[15:37] matching what I decided inside matches

[15:40] or doesn't match the outside. That's

[15:42] going to cause suffering if they don't

[15:44] match. My choice is do I now go out

[15:47] there and struggle with the outside to

[15:49] try to make it match what I decided

[15:51] inside? We'll talk about that in a

[15:53] minute. Or do I work inside to change my

[15:56] stupid head that's making everything

[15:59] seem like it's wrong, making everything

[16:00] seem like it's not the way I want it to

[16:02] be or will be the way I don't want it to

[16:04] be and so on. Which is your work because

[16:07] one work you can succeed at which is the

[16:10] work that says I need to change what's

[16:12] going on in here. If I change what's

[16:14] going on in here, all of a sudden

[16:15] everything changes. I like blue and red

[16:19] and green. I don't like any other

[16:21] colors. Okay, then you're in trouble

[16:23] because there's lots of colors in this

[16:24] world. I like all colors. They're so

[16:28] colorful. I mean, it's so much fun. Even

[16:31] the ones I don't like, I like cuz it

[16:32] made me feel yucky. And that's fun.

[16:35] Dear me, it's your choice. You either

[16:38] work on the outside to make the whole

[16:41] outside be the way you need it to be for

[16:43] you to be okay inside. Or you realize,

[16:45] wait a minute, I just worked real hard

[16:47] on getting him to like me, but now he's

[16:49] not there. Now another person's there.

[16:52] got to start all over. Don't don't think

[16:55] I'm not telling the truth. Go impress

[16:57] somebody.

[16:59] Tell the story. And and I've heard I've

[17:01] had very famous people say this is true,

[17:03] right? Go play a beautiful musical thing

[17:06] or sing a beautiful song or play a sport

[17:08] beautifully and somebody loves you for

[17:10] it, right? You don't want to play again

[17:13] because you stand the chance of failing.

[17:15] You stand the chance that they won't

[17:17] like me next time or I'll mess up. And

[17:19] so you just I don't know what to say.

[17:22] You can't win trying to make the outside

[17:25] match the inside. Why? Because it

[17:27] doesn't match. It doesn't match. Why

[17:30] can't it match? You really I can give

[17:32] you the answer. I don't know if you like

[17:34] to hear it. Why can't the outside match

[17:37] the inside?

[17:38] Why can't it just be like the way I want

[17:40] it to be? Because no one agrees with

[17:42] you.

[17:44] Because everybody, you know, including

[17:47] you yesterday and tomorrow,

[17:50] doesn't agree with how it's supposed to

[17:52] be, okay? And why would everybody agree

[17:55] with how what you want? Let's go to war

[17:59] and decide who wins. Okay? And you start

[18:03] to catch on. Wait a minute. It can't be

[18:05] the way I want it to be. One, because

[18:08] everybody else has something different.

[18:09] But there's another reason. You come

[18:11] down to this these intelligent, clear,

[18:14] rational thought. Why can't the outside

[18:17] be the way I want it to be inside? Well,

[18:19] to analyze that, which only takes a few

[18:21] minutes, you ask, "How did I decide how

[18:24] I wanted to be?" You didn't willfully

[18:27] decide. You're programmed.

[18:29] You listen to me. I've been doing this

[18:31] for a very long time. You're programmed

[18:34] by your past experiences.

[18:36] If you met somebody blonde and it was a

[18:38] lot of fun, blondes have more fun. You

[18:41] meet someone who's blonde and they're

[18:42] bimbo and they cause all kinds of messes

[18:44] all over the place. Can't go away from

[18:46] me. It's your past experiences that

[18:49] program what you want and what you don't

[18:51] want. How else would you know you had

[18:53] this experience? No, you had a different

[18:56] experience. You change. Does anybody

[18:59] disagree with me? Because you know who

[19:00] doesn't disagree with me? All

[19:02] psychology. They say man is the sum of

[19:05] his learned experiences. It's not true.

[19:08] You're the consciousness watching the

[19:10] mess that happens because you're the sum

[19:12] of your learned experiences. But your

[19:14] psyche is the sum of your learned

[19:15] experiences. Not a single thing in there

[19:18] that isn't made up because of an

[19:20] experience you had. Reading a book,

[19:22] watching a movie, meeting somebody, not

[19:24] meeting somebody. That's all part of

[19:26] experience. I was supposed to meet you.

[19:27] I was supposed to go to a Beatles

[19:28] concert and I lost my tickets and I was

[19:30] 5 10 years ago and I I've never ever I

[19:33] don't you had an experience or you

[19:37] didn't have an experience and it

[19:39] programmed you as to what you like and

[19:41] what you dislike.

[19:44] You got to get that. Is that insulting

[19:46] to say that all your preferences, likes

[19:48] and dislikes, beliefs and hopes and

[19:50] dreams are the sun learn experiences?

[19:53] No. I I'm me. No, they're not you.

[19:56] They're experiences you had that left

[19:58] these impressions on you and now that's

[20:00] determining how your mind thinks and how

[20:02] your heart feels. I want to get married.

[20:06] I want to get married something really,

[20:07] really special. I just never met anybody

[20:09] yet. He or she's special. They're

[20:12] exactly like the way I dreamt they would

[20:14] be. That's really good. Why? Because

[20:17] they're not the way you dream them to

[20:18] be. They're somebody else. You're

[20:20] projecting your dreams onto them, right?

[20:23] They walk like, "Oh, look. Look at I had

[20:25] dream ones. Okay. And then you marry

[20:27] them and they don't turn out to be the

[20:29] way you thought they would be. Of course

[20:31] they don't cuz they're not.

[20:34] Sorry. Right. They're not. They're the

[20:36] sum of their learned experiences. But

[20:39] that didn't show up until, you know,

[20:41] first or second year until this happened

[20:43] or you lost your job or you had a kid,

[20:46] whatever it is. All of a sudden that

[20:48] match is so good anymore. All right? It

[20:51] can't possibly keep matching. Why?

[20:53] Because every single day you have a

[20:55] different experience. Every single day

[20:56] she has a different experience. And so

[20:58] the summary and learn experience pretty

[21:00] complicated thing. It's a very dynamic

[21:02] thing. Keeps changing. And that's why

[21:03] you have trouble with relationships cuz

[21:05] you truly believe that that other person

[21:07] is supposed to be the way you want them

[21:09] to be. You truly believe that. How do I

[21:11] know that? Cuz if they behave in a way

[21:13] that isn't the way you want, you say,

[21:14] "That's so wrong. I can't believe they

[21:17] did. How could they do that? I would

[21:19] never do that." Of course you would

[21:20] never do that. You're the own

[21:22] experiences. to some of their learned

[21:24] experiences. That's why you have so much

[21:26] troubled relationships

[21:28] and that's why people don't stay

[21:29] together so long. And if they do, they

[21:31] do it for the kids and they resent that.

[21:33] Yeah, I had a relationship before. We

[21:35] stayed together for the kids. It really

[21:36] didn't work out very good. Kids got all

[21:38] messed up and so on. I don't I don't

[21:39] want to get married ever again. There

[21:41] you go. That's how I feel. No, it's not

[21:43] how you feel. It's how you're

[21:44] programmed.

[21:46] If you had different experience with

[21:47] that first marriage, you would have a

[21:50] different mindset. But you're not. Can

[21:52] you see? I know it's tough. Can you see

[21:54] how true it is? Is 100% true. They are

[21:58] not your preferences. They're not your

[22:00] likes and dislikes. They are what got

[22:03] impressed upon your psyche, your mind,

[22:05] and your heart based upon the

[22:06] experiences you had. And now you say

[22:08] they're mine. No, they're not yours. If

[22:10] somebody didn't yell at you once, then

[22:12] you like them. If somebody did, then you

[22:14] don't like them. And not only not like

[22:16] them, you don't like people from the

[22:17] same nationality or the same country or

[22:19] the same religion because they yelled at

[22:21] you and you understand that where does

[22:23] prejudice come from? It's learned.

[22:27] Daddy was that way or I had a bad

[22:28] experience with this kind of person or

[22:30] that people from that nationality.

[22:32] Whatever the heck it is. You've had

[22:34] experiences that left impressions on you

[22:36] and then you sit there and say it's how

[22:38] I am. No, it is not how you are. It's

[22:40] how it is because the impressions that

[22:42] were left on you. If something different

[22:44] had happened, you have different

[22:45] impressions and therefore you think

[22:46] differently and feel differently. I love

[22:48] when they say to me, "No, it's not my

[22:50] mind. I feel it in my heart." The mind

[22:52] and the heart are in a conspiracy with

[22:54] each other. If your heart feels

[22:55] something, your mind thinks it. If your

[22:57] mind thinks something, your heart feels

[22:59] it. Have you noticed? Okay. So, that is

[23:02] why the inside is the way it is. Because

[23:05] each person is a sum of their own

[23:07] experiences. That's why people have

[23:09] different preferences and hopes and

[23:10] dreams and concepts of views and

[23:11] beliefs. These are just all impressions

[23:13] that they had. Well, why can't the

[23:16] outside match what I want? Because the

[23:18] outside is not the sum of your learned

[23:21] experiences. It doesn't know anything

[23:23] about your learned experiences. It's

[23:26] been happening for billions of years,

[23:28] 14.5 billion. The outside's been

[23:30] manifesting. It didn't ask for

[23:32] permission. It didn't ask what you think

[23:34] should happen. So, the outside, ready,

[23:37] is the sum of its learned experiences.

[23:40] It's called cause and effect. Why does

[23:42] it have to rain on my birthday? That's

[23:44] you. It doesn't know it's your birthday.

[23:46] It's raining because of El Nino and L N

[23:49] and the mountains in Spain and the

[23:52] winds. And you want to know why it's

[23:53] raining? Study meteorology. You want to

[23:56] know why people are the way they are?

[23:57] Study psychology. It's this chain of

[24:00] cause and effect that makes the outside

[24:02] be the way it is. You 10 minutes ago ate

[24:06] a pizza that made you sick. The outside

[24:08] doesn't know anything about that. It

[24:10] doesn't change its behavior. It just

[24:13] unfolds. And you sit there and say, "Oh,

[24:16] how dare you bring me peace? Oh my god,

[24:18] you bring me more peace. I don't want

[24:19] more peace. You did that. It's not wrong

[24:23] that somebody brought you peace. They

[24:24] didn't know what the heck you went

[24:25] through. They didn't know you got sick

[24:26] yesterday. They bring your present. No

[24:30] way. You don't even know me. Don't like

[24:31] me. Get away from me." That is what

[24:34] you're doing. The outside is the result

[24:36] of all the causes that made it be that

[24:38] way.

[24:39] almost none of which have anything to do

[24:42] with you. They're happening all over the

[24:44] place in astrology. The place of the

[24:47] stars affect what's unfolding outside

[24:50] and not only physic everything physics

[24:53] goes all the way down there like things

[24:55] affect each other but not because of

[24:57] you. They affect each other because of

[24:59] the laws of the outside. You have made

[25:02] up what you want based on the kind of

[25:05] laws. I don't know what they are of how

[25:06] you decided to be weird. And you are

[25:09] weird. I am not weird. That's some

[25:11] people think. Well, you're weird as

[25:12] could be. Every one of you. Why? Because

[25:15] you're the learned experiences and they

[25:17] were completely random. You had a car

[25:19] accident. Now you won't ride in a car

[25:21] anymore. You watched a movie in which

[25:23] airplanes, was it called? Aeroplane or

[25:25] who knows, right? And snakes in a plane.

[25:28] I don't know. And you watch that stuff.

[25:30] Okay. And then basically now you want to

[25:31] ride in planes anymore. You refuse to

[25:33] ride in a plane anymore. There are

[25:34] people like that. Do you understand

[25:35] that? Lots of them. They won't ride in

[25:37] cars and I'm not driving in traffic and

[25:39] I won't drive at night and some of that

[25:41] has reason because your eyesight's not

[25:43] good. But this thing about I'm not

[25:44] riding a car anymore cuz I was in an

[25:46] accident 10 years ago. That's a problem.

[25:48] Problem for you, a problem for your

[25:50] kids, problem for your spouse, problem

[25:51] for your grandparents who you like to

[25:53] visit. Why did that happen? What if you

[25:56] didn't have the accident? Then you

[25:58] wouldn't be like that. Can I get

[26:00] through? So inside is the sum of your

[26:03] own experiences, outside is a sum of its

[26:05] own experiences. And the two things have

[26:07] nothing to do with each other. You grew

[26:09] up in New Hampshire and you had trees,

[26:11] you had this and that all these

[26:12] experiences. What's unfolding right now

[26:14] in front of me doesn't know squat about

[26:16] any of that, does it? It doesn't affect

[26:19] any of what's happening in reality. And

[26:21] you have decided that I have Oh. Oh god.

[26:25] I don't I can't even say it. You've

[26:27] decided I have to make the outside match

[26:29] the inside. That's the only way I can be

[26:31] happy to make the outside match the

[26:32] inside. Now there's a chore outside

[26:35] going on for 4.5 billion years just on

[26:38] this planet. And everything affected

[26:41] everything else and you have decided

[26:44] that the outside should match what you

[26:46] want. That is the cause of suffering.

[26:50] That is the cause of suffering. And

[26:53] basic the deep teachings all teach that.

[26:57] So the net result is the world is not

[26:59] going to be what you want it to be. And

[27:01] now you understand why. You want to know

[27:02] why? Because they're not supposed to be.

[27:04] You some of your learn experiences. It

[27:07] is this thing called was oh yeah science

[27:10] the natural laws that cause everything

[27:12] to be the way they are. Law of the most

[27:14] basic scientific law is the law of cause

[27:15] and effect. If there was no law of cause

[27:17] and effect there' be no science. The

[27:20] fact that if this happens it'll cause

[27:21] that to happen. Okay. Okay, now we can

[27:23] figure out why and what's going to

[27:25] happen and study it and see what we can

[27:26] do about it. But if there is no law of

[27:28] cause and effect, if it's just

[27:30] completely random, there's no science.

[27:32] Okay, so that's what the outside world

[27:34] is about, which is the sum of its

[27:37] learned experiences and your inside

[27:38] world, some of your own experiences. Now

[27:40] you have a choice. Do you want to go

[27:42] outside and try to manipulate every

[27:44] moment's unfolding in front of I mean

[27:45] every moment. It's not you left the kids

[27:48] home with the babysitter, but you don't

[27:49] trust the babysitter. So the entire rest

[27:52] of the evening you're uptight, anxious,

[27:54] calling. Every moment has to be what you

[27:57] want it to be. It doesn't stop. It

[27:59] doesn't ever stop. There are people when

[28:01] they drive in cars with somebody else

[28:03] driving, they're constantly uptight that

[28:06] something's going to go wrong. They'll

[28:06] be in an accident. They're grabbing

[28:08] corners. They're doing everything just

[28:10] to just just I'm not in control cuz I'm

[28:13] not comfortable. So you have this whole

[28:16] thing about it has to be the way I want

[28:18] it to be otherwise I'm not okay. And I

[28:20] ask you over and over again, how do you

[28:22] make it be the way you want it to be

[28:23] when it's not? And so you eventually

[28:26] reach the point of deep spiritual

[28:28] understanding. But what I do about this,

[28:31] you let go of yourself. That's the only

[28:35] thing you can do about it. You can't

[28:37] make everything be the way you want it

[28:39] to be. It keeps changing. You keep

[28:42] changing. It's just a total losing

[28:44] battle. So what do you do? look inside

[28:46] and say, "Okay,

[28:48] it's not exactly the color white that I

[28:50] wanted. I guess it's white." Contractor

[28:53] said it was white, but that's not the

[28:55] white I was thinking about. Do I repaint

[28:58] the whole kitchen, or do I say, "Eh,

[29:01] it's okay. I can live with that color

[29:03] white." And then you get a little

[29:05] better. You say, "Well, I can just live

[29:07] with it. Cope with it." Okay, it is

[29:10] better than fighting and spending all

[29:11] the money and fighting with everybody

[29:12] and suing the contractor because the

[29:14] color is not exactly what you said you

[29:16] wanted. But what about deciding that I

[29:19] like it that color? Well, how do I

[29:22] decide I like it when I don't? Cuz

[29:23] you're the one deciding whether you like

[29:25] it or not. It's just an impression left

[29:27] on top of you. If you had had that color

[29:30] in your first kitchen with your parents

[29:32] and you love the house, you would want

[29:35] that color. I guarantee you if it was

[29:37] even slightly off, you say, "No, that's

[29:38] not the color I wanted." So, you're

[29:40] sitting there making a big mess for no

[29:43] reason. Can you work with yourself to

[29:47] let go? That's what it boils down to.

[29:49] So, I should lie to myself. Okay, you

[29:51] want to do it? You I'll be you talking

[29:52] to me. So, I lie to myself and say, "I

[29:55] like it when I don't." Nope. Nope. Don't

[29:57] do that. Don't you dare do that. To

[29:58] cause suppression. You can look inside

[30:01] and say, "Okay, shh.

[30:04] Why do I feel so strongly about this

[30:07] shade of white and you're going to see

[30:10] in general I don't even look that

[30:12] deeply. I just say, "Oh, you don't like

[30:14] it? Here, give it to God. Don't I don't

[30:17] go down and find out why you don't like

[30:18] it. It's just some stupid reason." You

[30:21] just come down and you sit there and

[30:22] say, "Okay, he doesn't like it, but I'm

[30:25] not him. I'm watching him not like it."

[30:27] And at these stages, this is real

[30:29] growth. You go from, I don't like it,

[30:32] and make a big mess, right? I don't like

[30:35] it, but I can handle it. I'll handle it

[30:37] because it's too much of a mess to fight

[30:38] it. Okay, but you're not happy. That's a

[30:40] form of suppression. Just repressing the

[30:43] fact that you don't like it. See, I'm

[30:45] having a nice talk with you. All right.

[30:47] So, what do I do? What do I do? You try

[30:49] to see why you don't like it. And you're

[30:51] going to see that there's no reason.

[30:53] [laughter] There's no reason. I was a

[30:55] contractor a long time ago, right? There

[30:57] these color fans that people use when

[31:01] they're picking what colors they want.

[31:03] There's an entire fan called white.

[31:07] [snorts]

[31:08] Do you know that? And so basically, you

[31:10] sit there and say, "Okay, I have this

[31:14] impression. That's all it is. Left on me

[31:16] by some. I don't care if you can

[31:18] identify it or not. Fine. Identify it."

[31:20] All right. It's left there by some for

[31:22] some reason like that color versus

[31:24] another. Okay. And you sit there and

[31:25] say, do I want to not like it and

[31:28] suppress the fact that I don't like it?

[31:29] No. That creates all kinds of

[31:31] psychological issues and problems and

[31:33] truth is I don't like it. I don't like

[31:34] it. I'm saying I do. Well, use positive

[31:37] affirmation. I like it. I like it. I

[31:38] like it. And then behind that, you know,

[31:40] you don't like it. You're just saying

[31:42] that. If you liked it, why do you have

[31:43] to say you like it? That's what goes on

[31:45] in your mind. It's kind of fun, isn't

[31:47] it? Not so much so. So you go deeper and

[31:50] say okay there is obviously an

[31:52] impression left upon my heart and mind

[31:55] normally it's the mind left upon the

[31:57] mind of why I don't like it is it

[32:01] reasonable let's say business people

[32:03] what's the costbenefit analysis ready

[32:06] what is the costbenefit analysis of not

[32:09] liking it versus liking it there's a

[32:12] 100% cost if you don't like it and

[32:14] there's a 100% benefit if you do like it

[32:16] and since you're deciding

[32:18] I wonder which one's more fun. So you

[32:20] sit there and say, "Okay, okay, I get

[32:22] it. But how do I change what I want and

[32:25] what I don't want?" You start off by

[32:28] this understanding called right

[32:30] understanding. There's no reason that I

[32:33] don't like it. It's just some leftover

[32:35] stupid thing. It's costing me my

[32:38] happiness. It's costing me my money.

[32:40] It's going my relationship. Maybe the

[32:41] husband likes him one way, the wife

[32:43] different. And you know, all these

[32:44] problems and fights and arguments. It's

[32:47] causing me a lot of trouble. Is it worth

[32:49] it? And you look inside and you see, no,

[32:52] it's not worth it. And you don't

[32:53] suppress it. You don't fight with it at

[32:56] all. You welcome it to come up. Whatever

[32:59] the reason is, you are welcome inside of

[33:02] me so that you can pass through once and

[33:05] for all. And it will. And people write

[33:07] me from all over the world and talk

[33:09] about how it works. You just look at it

[33:12] and there's this part of you. It's not

[33:14] you. How to understand you? Because

[33:16] you're the one who's noticing that part

[33:17] of you. You notice there's a part of you

[33:19] that doesn't like it. Who notices? You

[33:22] do the self. And you sit there and say,

[33:25] "Okay, I'm going to let it go." Not rip

[33:28] it out. Not push it down. I'm going to

[33:30] welcome it. Okay. Hello. Part of me that

[33:33] doesn't like that shade of white, come

[33:35] on up. You're welcome. Say whatever you

[33:38] want to say. Just come on up. Feel it

[33:41] completely cuz I'm going to let it go.

[33:44] It's just a what? What is an impression?

[33:47] Oh my god, we're there. I said it leaves

[33:49] an impression on you. You're fast. It's

[33:51] called a samscara. It's a pattern of

[33:53] energy that didn't make it through you.

[33:55] It came in, you resisted it or clung to

[33:58] it, so it stayed there. And now that

[34:00] impression is made upon your psyche.

[34:03] That's what it's called. It calls. It's

[34:05] a pattern of energy that got stuck.

[34:08] Didn't get stuck. You pushed it there.

[34:10] You held it there and now it's there.

[34:12] All right? And it's very deeply

[34:14] ingrained. It can be very deeply

[34:15] ingrained. So it's hard to let go of.

[34:17] Why? Cuz when you start to come back up,

[34:19] you don't like it. It felt yiky to start

[34:21] with. It feels yiky now. And so you

[34:23] think, "No, I really don't like it." No,

[34:25] it just means there's this pattern stuck

[34:27] inside of you that's giving off bad

[34:30] energy when it gets stimulated. So every

[34:32] time you walk in the kitchen, oh, I

[34:34] should have changed it. I didn't change

[34:35] it. It's just adorable, right? So you're

[34:38] causing suffering. So is there something

[34:41] I can do about it? Of course there is.

[34:43] Don't you dare cope with it. Cope with

[34:45] it is a form of suppression. I'm saying

[34:47] I don't like it, but I I'll say I do. I

[34:50] might believe I do. I'm not going to

[34:52] make a mess out of it. That means you're

[34:53] pushing still. You're pushing the energy

[34:55] away that caused it to be that way.

[34:57] You're not dealing with it. There's a

[34:59] big difference. Yoga is very, very deep.

[35:01] And sister says, "No, don't do that.

[35:04] Welcome that it come up that the

[35:06] samscara release the energy that you

[35:08] couldn't handle when it happened. Here

[35:10] it is. is painted that color or my

[35:12] parents house is that color. Whatever it

[35:14] was that comes up and every time it

[35:16] starts to come up, you feel yiky. You

[35:18] feel weird. All right, welcome that.

[35:21] Relax. The whole idea is relax in the

[35:24] face of the energy. The energy that

[35:26] needs to come up is going to come up.

[35:28] It's trying to come up. It's always

[35:30] trying to come up. The fact that you

[35:31] feel bad when you look at the color is

[35:33] it trying to come up. [laughter] It's

[35:35] trying to express itself. It's trying to

[35:37] release. But you know, no, I don't like

[35:39] what it feels like. Well, that's too

[35:41] bad. You have to sit there and say, if I

[35:44] want to grow past this to where I can

[35:46] enjoy my life, I have to be willing to

[35:48] let go of the impressions that the past

[35:50] left on me that are making me not enjoy

[35:53] my life, not try to make life match

[35:55] those impressions. That's it's a battle

[35:57] you're never going to win. Then life

[35:59] isn't fun. It's it's a battle. It's a

[36:01] struggle. No, it's not. You do the work

[36:04] inside. You sit there and say, "Okay, I

[36:06] got this thing about this color white."

[36:08] First

[36:10] weird that I have this thing, right? And

[36:12] you realize there must have been an

[36:14] impression that left on me when I was my

[36:16] youth or this or that that made it that

[36:18] way. It doesn't just happen by itself.

[36:20] An impression got left there. Why did I

[36:22] keep it there? Because it felt yaky

[36:26] when it took place. You didn't like it.

[36:29] And therefore, you pushed it away. So,

[36:30] it stayed there. Now, you have to be

[36:32] willing to say, "I don't want it in

[36:35] there. I don't not not like it. Don't

[36:37] like it. I'll push it away. I don't

[36:40] neither like it or not like I just don't

[36:41] want it in there. It's messing my life

[36:43] up." So, what do you do? You let it come

[36:45] up. But it feels yucky. Yes, it does. A

[36:48] great master once said to me, "It's the

[36:50] pain that ends all pain." It's exactly

[36:53] the pain that ends all pain. It comes

[36:56] up. It's trying to pass through, and you

[36:59] don't push it back down. You get to the

[37:02] point where now I'm not pushing it back

[37:03] down. I'm understanding it's the cause

[37:05] of my suffering. I don't want to suffer

[37:07] over the color of the stupid cabinets. I

[37:09] don't want to suffer because it's

[37:10] raining out. I don't want to suffer

[37:12] because the driver in front of me didn't

[37:14] use their blinker. You start saying that

[37:16] about a lot of things. And you realize,

[37:18] wow, I got all this junk in here. I

[37:20] don't want to have all that junk in

[37:22] there. And therefore, it has to come up.

[37:24] Therefore, I look at it and not only do

[37:27] I tolerate it coming up, that's not high

[37:29] enough. I I have to have deep talk with

[37:31] you. Child birth, I heard is kind of not

[37:35] so much fun at certain periods of the

[37:38] experience, but it's worth it, isn't it?

[37:41] There people go back for seconds,

[37:43] thirds, fourth, fifths. Wow. I don't I

[37:45] don't get it. It's worth it. It's worth

[37:48] going through the pain because it gives

[37:52] something beautiful. This is way beyond

[37:54] child birth. It lets go of all the

[37:57] garbage you have inside of you that's

[38:00] making you be weird. I've got a mind

[38:02] call you weird. Are you weird? Answer

[38:05] me. Isn't it kind of hard to live in

[38:07] there? Figure out what's going to go on

[38:09] and what's not going to go on and

[38:10] whether you're going to be happy or not

[38:11] happy. You're sensitive and emotional

[38:13] and trigger points and come on. Okay.

[38:16] Compared to a clear being, it's pretty

[38:18] weird. Okay. How about moods? You ever

[38:20] have moods? Anybody ever have moods?

[38:22] Does anybody have moods? You know what a

[38:24] mood is? You've got that stuff in there.

[38:27] It got stimulated. I was doing fine and

[38:29] somebody said something and now I'm in a

[38:31] bad mood because you got that energy got

[38:34] hit and that's what's coming up. Now at

[38:36] some point you wake up and say I'm not

[38:38] going to go out there and try to

[38:39] manipulate everything to have that not

[38:40] happen. I'm going to let go of what

[38:43] makes it happen inside of me. And the

[38:45] way you do that is not only tolerate it,

[38:48] you catch on. If you can let it go even

[38:51] a little. The more you let it go, the

[38:53] less it bothers you until eventually you

[38:56] look at the cabinet and you laugh your

[38:58] head off. That used to bother me. You

[39:02] grew past it. How do you grow past it?

[39:04] By letting go of what was holding you

[39:06] down. Does that make sense? Do you

[39:08] understand that? My husband or my wife

[39:10] has a tendency that irritates me. Let's

[39:13] see. You try to change it and see what

[39:15] arguments take place and I have the

[39:17] right to do this. you I give you blah

[39:19] blah blah blah as opposed to why does

[39:22] that irritate me? It's kind of cute.

[39:25] It's a tendency. It's kind of cute. And

[39:27] if it irritates me, there's something

[39:28] wrong with me cuz I love this person. So

[39:32] why would I want something irritating me

[39:34] that they do the way they walk, the way

[39:36] they dress, the way they talk, whatever

[39:37] it is. And eventually you sit there and

[39:40] say, "It's cute. It's cute that it's

[39:43] different than the way I would be. I

[39:45] like enjoy it." and you welcome in. The

[39:49] more you welcome in it, the less it

[39:50] bothers you. The more you're willing to

[39:53] say, I am fine with this. So why am I

[39:56] picking on somebody? They have t a

[39:59] tendency that that hits my stuff. And

[40:02] then you say, well, I'm not going to be

[40:04] like that. I'm going to let it go. And

[40:07] you not only then don't cope, you

[40:09] literally start welcoming it. That's

[40:10] what I want you to get. Does it feel

[40:12] good when it comes out? Of course not.

[40:14] It was bad energy you stored. That's why

[40:17] it's bothering you. Now, do you want to

[40:19] stay in the rest of your life? At some

[40:21] point, you have to say, and that's why I

[40:23] talk to you all the time. We're talking

[40:25] about compassion. Imagine looking at

[40:27] somebody who's suffering over the color

[40:28] of the cabinet and they can't afford to

[40:31] have repainted. They think about suing

[40:33] the contractor. Hello. Just like it.

[40:37] There's a solution. Like the color. How?

[40:40] I don't like it. Who said so? I did.

[40:43] There you go. Ain't that beautiful?

[40:45] Well, how about working with yourself to

[40:47] find out why? And it doesn't mean

[40:50] knowing where the, you know, the

[40:52] situation first happened. It means I'm

[40:55] looking. Is there some scar? It's very

[40:56] easy. Why is it bothering you? Cuz I

[40:58] have stuff caught in me from before

[41:00] there. That's as far down as you have to

[41:02] go. You have to go to therapy and go

[41:05] back to your childhood house. You can go

[41:07] back to the house and find out they

[41:09] painted over it. So, you're scraping the

[41:10] paint while see the original. That's why

[41:13] I say weird. Okay. [laughter] And you

[41:15] just say, "Okay, it's not the way that

[41:18] my impressions like, but I don't want to

[41:22] keep these impressions inside of me. I

[41:24] would rather be happy all the time,

[41:26] regardless of the color or regardless of

[41:28] what somebody said, regardless how

[41:29] somebody's behaving, regardless of what

[41:31] they're wearing, regardless of the

[41:32] religion, regardless of anything. And

[41:35] then what happens when it comes up? It's

[41:37] not going to be comfortable. You stored

[41:39] it with bad energy. It's going to come

[41:40] up with bad energy, but you start

[41:42] welcoming it. You start catching on that

[41:45] this is very great that it doesn't feel

[41:47] good. Good. I'm glad it doesn't feel

[41:49] good. Now I can deal with a part of me

[41:51] that makes it not feel good. How? By

[41:54] facing it, by honoring it, by respecting

[41:57] it, by w I'm telling you, get to the

[41:59] point where you welcome it. If this is

[42:02] causing pain, I want it out.

[42:05] It's hitting us some scar from my past.

[42:08] I don't care where it came from. I just

[42:10] don't want it in there. Well, you can't

[42:12] not have it in there by pushing it away.

[42:14] It stays inside. You have to relax

[42:16] through it. Surrender, relax. So, that's

[42:19] the next step. One is resistance. Second

[42:21] is cope with it. Third is I can tolerate

[42:23] it. And the fourth is, okay, man, this

[42:26] works. I'm going to welcome this. And

[42:27] I'm telling you, I remember the moment I

[42:29] got to that point, I couldn't believe

[42:31] that it was like that. I looked down at

[42:33] it and I realized, wait a minute, I did

[42:36] that. I didn't do the event, but I'm the

[42:39] one that couldn't handle the event and

[42:40] push it down there for my whole

[42:42] childhood and different relationships

[42:44] and all, right? And you apologize to it.

[42:47] You literally, so I'm talking about

[42:49] compassion. You look down at that part

[42:51] of you. That's a part of your psyche.

[42:54] That's a part of your shock. You pushed

[42:56] a packet full down there and hold it

[42:58] down there your whole life. And instead,

[43:01] you look at it and you say, "I'm sorry.

[43:03] I'm sorry. Give me your hand. I want to

[43:05] help you out." That's different than

[43:07] positive thinking. Positive thinking can

[43:10] be a form of knocking down your negative

[43:12] thinking. This is getting to the root.

[43:14] The root is you push that thing down

[43:17] there. Okay? And just like if you lock a

[43:20] kid in a closet cuz they misbehave. I

[43:22] don't want to be there when the kid

[43:23] comes out of the closet cuz it ain't

[43:25] going to be healthy. Well, it's the same

[43:27] thing with that stuff you shove down

[43:28] there. So you can become this beautiful

[43:30] being that your entire life is about

[43:33] cleansing,

[43:34] not cleansing somebody else, cleansing

[43:37] your heart and your mind. How when it

[43:40] comes up, you welcome it. You apologize

[43:43] to it. You stick your hand down. There

[43:45] actually a line in the Gita that says

[43:48] one should raise the self with self, not

[43:51] trample down the self. For self, which

[43:53] could be self's friend, can become

[43:55] self's foe. But it's using atman capital

[43:59] A and atman lower A higher self lower

[44:02] self. One should raise the self lower

[44:05] self with self with your higher being

[44:09] not trample down the self. Hate it push

[44:12] it away. All that does is suppress it

[44:14] more. For self which can become self's

[44:16] friend can become self's foe. And

[44:18] literally I think the line after that

[44:19] says it self becomes self's foe when it

[44:22] hates itself as not itself. Whoa.

[44:25] Everyone gets confused that with all the

[44:27] word self, but you get it, don't you? If

[44:28] you look down at that part of your being

[44:30] that you created by shoving it down

[44:32] there and locking in a closet and now

[44:34] you don't like that part. I can't even

[44:36] live with it. I hate it. Wow. Instead,

[44:39] you get clearer and you say, "I'm into

[44:42] this cleansing process. I'm into

[44:45] liberation. I'm into freeing myself from

[44:47] myself, not for myself." You think of

[44:50] lectures like that. Is freedom freedom

[44:52] for yourself or freedom from yourself?

[44:54] Go contemplate on that. And you just

[44:56] basically start offering it up. As it

[44:59] comes up, you just stick your hand down.

[45:01] You say, "Come, come on. Come up. Come

[45:03] on. You can come up here. I don't care

[45:04] what it feels like. You're welcome. You

[45:06] are welcome inside of me. I don't care

[45:08] what needs to be released. I want it to

[45:10] be released. I'm open to it. I'll

[45:13] breathe. I'll do what I need to do, but

[45:15] I ain't pushing you back down. I'm

[45:17] welcoming you up. Everything. Wait till

[45:19] you see how you grow." There's

[45:21] equivalent to saying take it and give it

[45:24] to God. Because giving it to God means

[45:26] I'm not pushing it back down. I'm saying

[45:28] here you want it, you take it. I give

[45:30] flowers every day. Give this instead. He

[45:32] much prefer it. Lay your stuff at the

[45:35] altar. Okay? And you just get to the

[45:37] point where you understand the entire

[45:39] talk I've had about compassion and

[45:41] understanding. When you're that way with

[45:43] yourself and you look at other people,

[45:45] they don't even know they could be that

[45:46] way. They're busy fighting to struggling

[45:49] to make the world be what they want. And

[45:51] basically, they have compassion because

[45:53] they're suffering for no reason. I

[45:55] understand the no reason. Okay? It's not

[45:57] no reason. I showed you the reason. The

[46:00] reason is you got caught. And liberation

[46:02] means freeing yourself. So, and I love

[46:05] the fact that Christ says you must die

[46:06] to be reborn. And I guarantee you what

[46:08] he means by that's what we just talked

[46:10] about. You must die of the personal

[46:12] self. You must die of this part of you

[46:14] that says, "I don't like this. I like

[46:15] this." And then you're reborn in spirit.

[46:17] You're reborn in shakti. All of a

[46:19] sudden, this all this energy comes

[46:20] rushing up inside of you all the time.

[46:23] You're a being of great light, but

[46:26] you're busy staring at this garbage that

[46:28] you store down there and then going out

[46:29] there and trying to manipulate the world

[46:31] to match your garbage. It's the truth.

[46:34] If you have a way you want something to

[46:35] be, you better check it out before you

[46:36] start bothering other people.

[46:38] If you sit there and you wanted the

[46:40] corner office, somebody else got the

[46:41] corner office and you're resented and

[46:43] you're mad at them, you don't talk to

[46:45] them, you know, you go to the family at

[46:46] least through your friends, just subtly

[46:48] all falls apart. What What are you

[46:50] doing? You should congratulate that

[46:52] person from the bottom of your heart.

[46:53] Feel, oh, thank God you got that. I

[46:56] didn't need it. What do I need it for?

[46:58] I'm happy as the Lord. So, get okay

[47:00] inside. And you won't have to do all

[47:02] this garbage outside. But the way you

[47:04] get okay inside is by letting go of

[47:06] yourself, by surrendering, by releasing,

[47:08] by accepting, by honoring, by

[47:10] respecting. Those are all the magic

[47:12] words. And eventually by welcoming

[47:14] welcoming thing. It's like you get to

[47:16] the point where you say, "God guru stuck

[47:18] his or her hand in there, grabbed my

[47:21] stuff, and is pulling it out for me.

[47:24] All I have to do is let them." And boy,

[47:27] that's how it is. Okay? You'll catch on

[47:29] at some point. You don't have to do

[47:30] anything except let it happen.

[47:33] Free yourself. Free yourself.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

You suffer when the external world doesn't match your personal preferences for how things should be. Since your preferences come from your past experiences, not from objective reality, you can suffer even in objectively neutral or positive situations. The suffering comes from the gap between what is and what you've decided should be.
Your preferences are learned patterns formed by every experience you've had—how you were treated, what you were rewarded for, what hurt you, what frightened you. These patterns were installed unconsciously over your lifetime and now automatically activate when triggered by external events, creating the impression of who you are.
Releasing your rigid demand that the world conform to your preferences isn't the same as becoming indifferent to outcomes. You can still work toward goals and values while remaining at peace with whether those specific outcomes occur. The difference is you're no longer suffering the gap between your preference and reality.
Releasing your attachment to specific outcomes is different from accepting injustice or harm. You can work to change circumstances you find unjust while remaining internally free from the suffering that comes from demanding those circumstances change according to your timeline and methods.
Yes, according to this teaching. Suffering is primarily psychological—it comes from your resistance to reality, not from reality itself. Even in genuinely difficult circumstances, it's possible to stop suffering by releasing your demand that things be different than they are, though this is an advanced practice requiring deep inner work.
When you understand that your own suffering comes from your learned preferences meeting an indifferent world, you can recognize that others' suffering comes from the same source. This creates genuine compassion—not pity, but a clear understanding that they don't have to suffer and a recognition that they, like you, are caught in patterns from their past.
