Why Truth Is Too Close and Too Simple to Grasp, Explained

From GP Walsh

Watch · 7

Two hours into a livestream that was never going to stay on schedule, GP Walsh is still fighting his audio. He has just settled into a new house on the water in Richmond Beach, north of Seattle, a ten-minute walk from the ocean and five minutes from the granddaughter he drives to school every morning. Before he gets anywhere near a teaching, he is asking whether the sound distorts, apologizing for the rant it took to get there, and admitting he almost skipped the session. Then he names the morning's theme, a title he admits he picked on the fly: truth is "too close and too simple to grasp." What follows is a long, looping, often funny walk through the oldest question in contemplative life: who is it that is aware of being alive? Walsh, a teacher steeped in Advaita Vedanta, Zen, and Christian mysticism, argues that truth is not something you think your way toward. It is what is already present, and the mind's hunger for ideas is the thing standing in its way.

What does it mean that truth is not an idea?

Walsh starts from a confession. For much of his spiritual life, he says, he assumed truth was a kind of perfect concept, a formula so precise that once you had it everything would be understood. He found things that were "quite precise" and "impossible to logically decompose," yet something was missing. The gap closed only after he encountered Advaita Vedanta, then Zen, then his own teacher, who "kind of brought the whole thing into focus."

The conclusion he draws is blunt. In the talk he tells viewers, "truth is not an idea. It's what is. It's life itself. It's that from which everything comes. It's your very being." He then proves the point with a question that dissolves the usual search. Do you exist? Of course you do. But is that existence a belief, a theology, a philosophy? Do you need a scripture, a guru, a priest, or a rabbi to confirm it? His answer is that the existence confirms itself: "You are. That's that is the truth."

The argument is not that the truth is mysterious. It is that we overlook it because it is so obvious. Walsh's phrase for this is that it is "too close." The mind is always reaching outward for something it can name, when the only thing that cannot be doubted is the one doing the reaching.

Why is the "I" the center of everything?

Walsh's central move is to make the word "I" the hinge of the whole inquiry. Notice, he says, that your life revolves around it. Every relationship is measured against it, not only intimate ones but business partnerships, group memberships, and congregations. Grammatically this is baked into language: "That's why it's called first person, because the second and third, you and he, she, it, they, them, all of the pronouns are in relation to I." Strip away the I and the other pronouns have nothing to stand on. "No I, no you. No I, no world."

He ties this to the early seers of India, whom he credits with recognizing that the I is the ground of everything. Then he pushes the question further: who am I, without the concept of I, even without the word? That, he says, is the real subject of meditation. The thought "I" is only one of the things that appear to me. The one who sees all of it is something else.

Walsh takes a swipe at a famous philosopher to make the point. "Sorry, Descartes, but you're wrong," he says, because "I think" is itself a thought. The "I" that seems to be doing the thinking is a thought too. You do not need thought to be. Being is simply here, and it is you. If you give that enough attention, he says, it will free you from "all sorts of ideas we've burdened ourselves with," including ideas about who you are, what is possible, and how to fix yourself.

What is the difference between meditation and self-inquiry?

Walsh is blunt about how meditation is sold, at least in the West. He describes it as reduced to a return on investment: less stress, better health, manifestation, and "all sorts of things which dilute it." He does not deny that these benefits happen. His objection is that they are side effects. "The point of it is to bring attention to that which is not that which is seen, but what is seeing, you that is seeing."

He returns to a line he attributes to Saint Francis, "what you are looking for is where you are looking from," and uses it as a map. Most of us, he says, look outward and never check the vantage point. He admits he did this himself for a long time. He had deep insights, but "I could not get past the sense that this I was having insights." Those insights remained objects. The looker stayed unexamined.

The honest implication is that this kind of seeing is hard to reach from books alone. Walsh says he is "not sure anybody can get it until you run into a real teacher who can show you that." That is less a claim about authority than about how the mind works. Left to itself, it will keep translating everything, including its own awareness, into a story it can own.

Can you find the one who is suffering?

The most practical passage in the opening stretch is Walsh's demonstration with suffering. Imagine someone says, "You're suffering, right?" The natural reply is yes, of course. Walsh then slows it down. There are feelings, often intense and uncomfortable. There are thoughts about those feelings: this is terrible, I don't like it, how do I make it stop, it is wrecking my life. All of those are present. But then the question he asks is: "Is that I anything other than a thought? In other words, can you actually find the I that is suffering?"

This is inquiry rather than argument. He is not telling you to stop suffering or to feel differently. He is asking you to locate the sufferer as a discrete object, and he suggests you will find it hard to do. What is there is sensation, image, and the story about sensation. The "I am suffering" sentence turns out to be one more thought among the others, and when you look for its source, the source is not a separate entity sitting behind the pain. Walsh frames this as a route to freedom from the burden of identifying with every experience that passes through.

He is careful not to present this as a formula. In the broader talk he says plainly that "it isn't the technique that works," and he warns against treating inquiry as one more method to master and perform. Insight arrives when attention turns on the one who is looking, and no procedure can manufacture that turning.

Why does Walsh say the mind will keep doubting?

Walsh is not naive about the mind's resistance. Later in the broadcast, which runs over two hours, he circles back to the restlessness of thought, to the habit of seeking meaning even when meaning is already present, and to what he describes as a hypercritical, fear-based inner voice. The mind, he says, "will always doubt." Doubt is not a defect to eliminate. It is the mind doing what minds do, and the invitation is to see it clearly rather than to win the argument with it.

This matters because the stance he describes is not triumphant. Walsh talks about his own history, about how long he circled the truth before he could see it. He is also someone who, as the description of this channel notes, works with emotional healing and deep-seated trauma. That context helps explain why he keeps returning to suffering as the doorway. The "I" that suffers is the same "I" that doubts, and both can be looked at with the same steady attention.

Where to go from here

If the talk has a single instruction, it is the one Walsh keeps repeating in different words: look at the one who is looking. Start with an ordinary moment of discomfort, and ask whether you can find the person who is having it. Then ask what you actually have in hand: a feeling, a sound, a thought about the feeling. Notice when the mind begins its usual commentary, and notice whether it is ever the source of the awareness that hears it.

For a fuller picture, watch the full "Tea with G" broadcast on the GP Walsh channel, which includes live questions and his own improvised pacing. The description points to his website, gpwalsh.com, where he offers a free private consultation. Readers interested in the traditions behind his teaching may want to look into Advaita Vedanta, Zen, and Christian mysticism, the three lineages he names as shaping his path. The core claim is simple and it is demanding: truth is already here, and the work is to stop looking past it.

Walsh's own line sums up the paradox best. "It's a nice uh" he says, almost in passing, and then he is off again, back to the granddaughter, the sound check, and the question he cannot stop asking. Maybe that is the point. The truth is not the thing you finally catch. It is the one catching.

[0:02] Hello everyone. Hello, hello, hello.

[0:07] And welcome to tea. I know I haven't

[0:09] done one of these in a bit.

[0:11] It's [clears throat] been

[0:14] well,

[0:15] I uh

[0:17] I do a lot of teaching these days in

[0:19] these classes and some of them do go on.

[0:22] I do one on Saturday and sometimes they

[0:23] can go on for

[0:25] 4 hours or so and uh

[0:28] between all the

[0:29] prep work and editing and all the other

[0:32] stuff I do uh

[0:34] uh sometimes Sunday morning I just oh

[0:36] God, please.

[0:38] Please,

[0:39] give me a day off.

[0:40] >> [snorts]

[0:42] >> But,

[0:43] uh nonetheless, here I am. I do love to

[0:46] do it.

[0:47] >> [clears throat]

[0:48] >> So, uh

[0:50] uh do let me know if the sound is okay.

[0:55] Right?

[0:56] Uh this um

[0:58] all the different systems I have to use

[1:00] for live streams and classes and all

[1:01] that, they handle the sound differently

[1:03] and

[1:04] and uh

[1:05] I'm trying to get it all stabilized so

[1:08] it's uh

[1:10] uh

[1:11] uh so it's okay.

[1:13] >> [laughter]

[1:13] >> So, it's consistently good

[1:16] and uh loud enough and the like but

[1:18] doesn't distort. So, yeah, there's my uh

[1:22] there's my

[1:23] there's my rant for the morning. As

[1:24] ranty as I can get. So,

[1:27] hello Eva. Good to see you, too.

[1:30] >> [laughter]

[1:32] >> I am very well, thank you. Yeah.

[1:35] Yeah, I actually canceled class

[1:37] yesterday because I was uh

[1:40] kind of under the weather as they say.

[1:42] Rosario says the sound is perfect.

[1:45] Excellent. Great, great, great, great.

[1:47] Right?

[1:48] I have after long last finally

[1:51] well, since last August actually,

[1:53] finally settled in here to uh my own

[1:56] little space.

[1:57] Uh

[1:59] really nice part of

[2:01] of uh Shoreline, which is north of

[2:04] Seattle. A place called Richmond Beach.

[2:06] It's about uh

[2:08] oh,

[2:09] uh

[2:10] maybe a 10-minute walk to

[2:13] the to the beach.

[2:15] Um

[2:16] uh yeah, to the ocean and um

[2:20] uh lots of view look out points and the

[2:22] like and I am still only about 5 minutes

[2:26] from my granddaughter. So, uh every uh

[2:29] every morning I go

[2:31] over and I take both of them to school.

[2:34] So, uh

[2:35] I have my daily dose of the

[2:37] of them and I get

[2:38] and uh they get their daily dose of me.

[2:41] I

[2:41] yeah.

[2:42] I

[2:43] uh you know, I'm their only I'm their

[2:45] only grandparent.

[2:46] Um my son

[2:50] does not want them having anything to do

[2:52] with his mother.

[2:54] >> [laughter]

[2:55] >> And uh

[2:56] their other grandparents live in Hong

[2:57] Kong cuz uh

[2:59] and they're they're half Asian. So, they

[3:01] see them twice a year.

[3:02] And

[3:04] I never had any grandparents around.

[3:06] They they all died

[3:08] early in my life and or before I was

[3:10] born.

[3:11] Uh my son didn't

[3:13] either because my family was so batshit

[3:15] crazy. I

[3:16] I moved just to California

[3:19] and didn't want them to have any contact

[3:22] with that. So, um I it's

[3:25] it's really nice being able to

[3:28] to

[3:29] have a close relationship with

[3:31] with somebody like that. It's it's a

[3:32] sense of continuity there in a world

[3:35] that's very splintered and polarized.

[3:38] So, uh

[3:40] Anybody has any questions right off the

[3:42] bat? I'm I'm [clears throat]

[3:44] I'm be I'd be delighted to take them up

[3:46] immediately.

[3:48] Um

[3:49] I put a title on this just cuz I felt

[3:51] like putting a title on it. I have

[3:53] I did not uh

[3:55] plan actually on thinking about about

[3:58] speaking about

[3:59] about that. Matter of fact, I don't

[4:00] know. What's up there?

[4:02] Truth is too close and too simple to

[4:04] grasp. It's a nice

[4:07] uh

[4:09] You know,

[4:11] in my spiritual growth along

[4:14] the way, which is all

[4:16] which I can mark the day it started and

[4:19] I was

[4:20] 19 and I was 74. So, that's

[4:23] 55 years ago.

[4:25] >> [laughter]

[4:28] >> I I used to think the truth was like the

[4:33] the perfect concept. You got everything

[4:35] right. Everything was understood. I

[4:38] mean, oh, that's it and that's what it

[4:40] is and that's what it is and it was

[4:42] incontrovertible. And I

[4:44] I found a lot of things that really were

[4:47] quite

[4:49] quite precise, quite

[4:51] um impossible to to logically

[4:55] um

[4:56] uh

[4:57] decompose or deconstruct. But,

[5:01] yeah, something was missing.

[5:03] Yeah.

[5:05] It was a while before I ran into Advaita

[5:07] Vedanta and then Zen and then my own

[5:10] teacher

[5:12] that kind of brought the whole thing

[5:14] into focus that truth is not an idea.

[5:20] It's

[5:21] it's it's what is. It's life itself.

[5:24] It's

[5:25] that from which everything comes. It's

[5:28] your very being. It's you.

[5:32] It's you.

[5:38] Just to

[5:41] prove that out for you.

[5:44] Everyone here knows

[5:47] that they ex- if I say, "Do you exist?"

[5:51] >> [laughter]

[5:53] >> Uh yeah, of course. Right?

[5:56] Now, is that an idea?

[5:58] Is that a concept? Is is it a belief, a

[6:01] religion, a theology,

[6:04] a philosophy?

[6:06] Uh

[6:07] And do you need anyone

[6:10] to confirm that for you? Do you need the

[6:12] scriptures or gurus or

[6:15] holy people or priests or imams or

[6:19] rabbis or

[6:21] or anybody

[6:23] to validate that for you?

[6:28] You are.

[6:30] That's

[6:31] that is

[6:32] the truth.

[6:37] Now, we don't pay much attention to that

[6:38] because it's just so self-evident.

[6:43] So, we don't give it a lot of attention.

[6:48] But, that word I

[6:51] is where your whole life revolves

[6:53] around. Everything in your life is in

[6:55] reference to that I.

[6:59] If you know

[7:01] the truth of that I,

[7:04] which doesn't need the word I,

[7:07] does it?

[7:08] You don't have to have any words. You

[7:09] don't have to have a name.

[7:12] You don't have to uh you don't have to

[7:14] be able to think. Sorry, Descartes, but

[7:17] you're wrong.

[7:18] >> [laughter]

[7:24] >> I think is itself a thought.

[7:27] And the I

[7:29] that seems to be thinking is a thought.

[7:34] You don't need any of that

[7:36] to be.

[7:38] Being is simply

[7:42] here and it's you.

[7:48] If you'll give enough time to that,

[7:50] you'll find it to liberate you from all

[7:52] sorts of ideas we've burdened ourselves

[7:54] with. Ooh, nice to

[7:57] who and what we are and what's possible,

[7:58] what's not possible and what can I do

[8:00] and how do I do this and

[8:02] Notice that all of your relationships,

[8:05] all of them, not just the very personal

[8:07] ones, family and lover and all of that,

[8:10] but business and you know, groups you

[8:13] belong to, uh church or

[8:15] or temple or whatever,

[8:18] all are in relation to I.

[8:24] That's why it's called first person

[8:26] because

[8:27] the second and third, you and he, she,

[8:30] it, they, them, all of the pronouns

[8:34] are in relation to I. No I, no you.

[8:37] No I, no world.

[8:39] Everything revolves around I.

[8:44] This was recognized thousands of years

[8:47] ago

[8:48] by by folks in

[8:51] in

[8:52] very early in India, the early rishis of

[8:55] of India

[8:57] that recognized that the I was

[8:59] everything.

[9:00] And so, what was this I?

[9:04] In other words, who am I?

[9:07] Without the concept of I. Even without

[9:09] the word I.

[9:11] What?

[9:15] And this is the focus of meditation.

[9:19] Should be.

[9:21] In the West, meditation has been reduced

[9:23] to a

[9:24] just something else that's a return on

[9:26] investment and you less stress, better

[9:28] health and

[9:30] and manifestation and all sorts of

[9:32] things which dilute it.

[9:35] Uh all of those things result from

[9:37] [snorts] meditation, but they're not the

[9:39] point of it. The point of it is

[9:42] to bring attention to that which

[9:45] is

[9:46] not that which is seen, but what is

[9:48] seeing, you that is seeing.

[9:51] As

[9:54] as uh

[9:55] Saint Francis said "It's beautifully

[9:58] uh what you are looking for is where you

[10:02] are looking from."

[10:04] But we don't pay any attention to that.

[10:10] I didn't.

[10:12] Right past that.

[10:14] Skirted around it. You know, just hung

[10:17] out around it.

[10:19] You know, just kind of dancing around.

[10:22] Very deep insights, but I could not get

[10:24] past the sense that that this I was

[10:28] having insights.

[10:32] I didn't get it.

[10:34] And I'm not sure anybody can get it

[10:37] until until you run into a real teacher

[10:39] who can show you that.

[10:45] It is not the

[10:46] It just doesn't occur to us to question

[10:49] whether or not

[10:51] the I

[10:53] thought, the I experience, the I sense,

[10:56] the I

[10:58] uh

[10:59] self is in fact the truth.

[11:04] We just presume it.

[11:08] So, if I say to somebody,

[11:11] "Okay, you're having an experience.

[11:12] You're suffering, right?"

[11:14] Yeah, okay. Can you find the one who is

[11:17] suffering?

[11:19] Huh?

[11:20] I said,

[11:22] "What the hell are you talking about? Of

[11:23] course I'm suffering."

[11:26] And of course you just can't say that

[11:28] without proper preparation cuz it

[11:30] doesn't make any sense.

[11:34] So, try to break it down a little bit

[11:36] more. Okay, there's feelings here.

[11:39] Uncomfortable,

[11:41] uh horrible feelings. Sometimes intense

[11:44] feelings. Right?

[11:46] And you are definitely having those

[11:49] feelings.

[11:51] And then there's all sorts of thoughts

[11:53] about those feelings.

[11:55] Uh

[11:56] the I got to get rid of it. I don't like

[11:58] it. Please go. How do I How do I do This

[12:01] is terrible. I'm It's doing all these

[12:03] things to my life. All of those thoughts

[12:05] are there. Yeah, those are all there.

[12:10] But notice there's this There's this I

[12:13] am suffering.

[12:18] Is that I anything other than a thought?

[12:22] In other words, can you find actually

[12:25] find the I that is suffering?

[12:30] It seems a strange one, and I'm not sure

[12:32] why it came to me right now to talk

[12:33] about it, but here we are. Let's see

[12:34] what happens.

[12:36] Um

[12:38] All of the experience, the thoughts, the

[12:42] feelings, the intensity, the all of it.

[12:46] They're clear, aren't they? They're

[12:48] You can point to it say, "Yes, this

[12:51] feeling." Right?

[12:53] So, then I say,

[12:54] if I say then

[12:56] you should be able to point to the I

[12:59] that's having those experience, that's

[13:01] suffering it.

[13:03] With the same

[13:04] dead nuts actual accuracy. Everything

[13:07] out You can point to it. There it is.

[13:08] Yeah, it feels horrible. There's this

[13:10] feeling. There's all these thoughts.

[13:13] Show me the [clears throat] I.

[13:19] I'm not sure this is landing anywhere,

[13:21] but

[13:22] I'll just kind of

[13:24] take it to the take it take it to the

[13:26] end. It's

[13:28] It it it can be perplexing.

[13:32] Because the I that's suffering is

[13:34] assumed.

[13:36] It's just not questioned.

[13:40] And

[13:41] Well, there's got to be an I suffering

[13:42] cuz there's all this suffering going on.

[13:45] Well, there are feelings going on for

[13:47] sure. It starts with the feelings, not

[13:49] with the thoughts.

[13:51] Because the feelings are there. Whoop.

[13:54] And And then there's thoughts about

[13:56] those feelings. Something arises in the

[13:58] environment, and then there's all sorts

[14:00] of thoughts and ideas about that. It's a

[14:02] suffering. It is terrible. I don't want

[14:04] that.

[14:06] So,

[14:07] putting just the attention just on the

[14:09] feelings, the actual experience itself.

[14:15] What if we don't pay any attention to

[14:17] the thoughts about it?

[14:20] Cuz they're shaped by conditioning and

[14:23] traumas and culture and all sorts of

[14:26] stuff. You shouldn't be feeling this,

[14:27] shouldn't thinking this.

[14:29] Those are thoughts.

[14:33] No feeling that arises says, "Ah, this

[14:35] is terrible. I'm overwhelming. You can't

[14:37] handle it." They don't. They just are

[14:39] feelings that are there.

[14:41] And then later

[14:43] very quickly

[14:44] the mind jumps in and says, "God, I

[14:47] can't I can't deal with this."

[14:51] Which

[14:52] which creates this sense of suffering.

[14:55] The sense of suffering is definitely

[14:57] there.

[14:59] So, then ask this I that can't deal with

[15:02] it.

[15:05] What is it? Let me see that.

[15:08] Or

[15:09] Is there actually an I that can't deal

[15:11] with it? Or is there a thought that

[15:14] says, "I can't deal with it." And it's a

[15:16] belief

[15:18] being being seen and held by

[15:23] you.

[15:28] The feeling didn't announce it.

[15:30] The feeling didn't announce give itself

[15:32] a name, diagnosis, or anything. It's

[15:34] just there.

[15:37] You're just there.

[15:39] Without the thoughts, without any of

[15:42] that,

[15:43] is there suffering?

[15:49] There can be pain for sure, discomfort

[15:51] for sure.

[15:53] But suffering?

[15:54] Do I have to suffer it?

[15:58] Or is the I am suffering just a thought

[16:04] that doesn't need to be believed?

[16:09] Huh?

[16:10] And the I

[16:12] that seems to believe that thought,

[16:17] isn't that just another thought?

[16:23] I'm just going to leave it there cuz

[16:26] I I keep

[16:28] poking in and digging, and I'm just I'm

[16:31] I'm hoping somebody out there is is like

[16:33] gears are turning because

[16:35] you know, sometimes I can feel I Yeah,

[16:37] it's connecting somewhere.

[16:39] So, I sometimes I can't.

[16:41] So, it might be. I don't dismiss it.

[16:44] Just that I'm not I'm not feeling it.

[16:46] You all have a beverage today. Yes,

[16:47] good.

[16:49] >> [laughter]

[16:53] >> Uh

[16:54] let me go back and

[16:56] make sure I say hello to you.

[16:57] Anne, hello Anne.

[16:59] Um

[17:01] it's Anne.

[17:02] You're new. Good evening, G. Good to see

[17:04] you. Good to see you, too. Are you new?

[17:07] Or am I just not remembering?

[17:12] Um

[17:13] Victoria.

[17:15] Uh my parents suffer a lot not having

[17:18] their grandchildren around.

[17:20] Uh

[17:21] I hope you're feel I hope you're feeling

[17:23] better, G. Thank you. Thank you. Thank

[17:25] you so much. Um

[17:28] Uh um

[17:31] Uh

[17:32] suffer you know, that that

[17:34] that's actually a

[17:36] a choice. It's a

[17:38] We have all have expectations about

[17:40] life.

[17:42] What it's supposed to do. But But you

[17:44] know, life never signed any kind of deal

[17:46] that said it was going to show up the

[17:47] way it we wanted it to.

[17:50] There have been times when I have been

[17:52] away and I've not seen my grandkids and

[17:55] when I was living in New Mexico for a

[17:56] while, probably three, four nights a

[17:58] week, my you know, I I'd get a call on

[18:00] FaceTime from my from my granddaughter

[18:02] so before the younger one was born.

[18:04] We're very

[18:06] We're very very close.

[18:07] And I missed her. I missed her terribly.

[18:11] And I miss them

[18:12] when I don't see them.

[18:14] But I don't suffer it.

[18:18] You know, life is the way life is. I

[18:19] mean, uh

[18:21] There's lots of times where uh you know,

[18:25] uh the grandparents would expect, "Well,

[18:26] why wasn't I invited to that?"

[18:28] [clears throat] And I go,

[18:29] "Let them have their family. Let them

[18:31] just

[18:32] do what they want to do."

[18:35] I don't want to put any shackles or

[18:37] demands on anybody. Good lord.

[18:40] >> [laughter]

[18:41] >> Good lord.

[18:43] I had enough of that put on me, and uh

[18:46] I know it doesn't It doesn't feel right.

[18:49] I come to trust life.

[18:53] It knows what it's doing.

[18:55] Yeah.

[18:57] Your parents can miss them. They can

[18:59] feel

[19:00] They can feel uh

[19:02] uh sad about it. You know,

[19:04] they can all sorts of things, right? But

[19:09] they don't have to suffer. Suffering is

[19:11] voluntary. Suffering is the attitude we

[19:13] have towards it.

[19:14] And of course that is based on our

[19:17] central identity, which is just

[19:20] that I thought.

[19:22] Without the I thought,

[19:24] right? Never occurred to you. You'd

[19:26] still be here, wouldn't you?

[19:29] >> [laughter]

[19:31] >> You'd still be here.

[19:33] You wouldn't cease to exist. The dog

[19:35] exists just fine, doesn't have an I

[19:37] thought. Children

[19:39] don't have an I thought right away. It

[19:41] comes.

[19:45] Suffering is

[19:47] completely

[19:50] our disagreement

[19:52] with uh life and what's happening

[19:56] and our and uh the foiling of our

[19:59] expectations,

[20:02] that's all it is.

[20:04] Otherwise, there is no suffering in

[20:06] life. Not saying there's not pain, loss.

[20:10] You know?

[20:11] I miss my grandkids. I miss my own kids

[20:14] when they were little little boys. I

[20:16] miss my 5-year-old kids.

[20:19] But they're not here anymore. Right?

[20:22] So now it's just this sweetness that's

[20:24] kind of permeates permeates everything.

[20:28] I still refer to them as the best

[20:30] mistake I ever made.

[20:35] Uh hope Yeah, let's let's see.

[20:38] Here we Yeah.

[20:40] My being is is always evident. It's so

[20:44] simple. Yes.

[20:48] The truth is very simple, but the mind

[20:51] is highly complex.

[20:53] Because

[20:55] minds, the way they function,

[20:58] they need a reference point.

[21:02] You can't have mind without a reference.

[21:04] It has to have some way to organize all

[21:06] the stuff.

[21:07] All right.

[21:09] And at first it just it makes something

[21:11] up. And the thing that it makes up is

[21:14] the sense of I I am. I am this. I am the

[21:17] body. Then I am this that that's how it

[21:19] does it.

[21:22] Cuz it cannot see or know you,

[21:28] which is not an object that you can

[21:30] perceive.

[21:33] Consciousness, that which is hearing my

[21:35] words, is not a form. It's not a thing.

[21:41] It's everywhere like space. It's It's

[21:44] But it's you.

[21:47] All right.

[21:48] Victoria said, "I'm not feeling

[21:50] physically good today. I finally forced

[21:52] myself to walk a little bit."

[21:55] Sometimes I find myself thinking that

[21:58] maybe there

[21:59] is really nothing and everything is just

[22:03] pure randomness.

[22:06] Thinking of that makes me sad.

[22:09] Well, let's look at that together then,

[22:11] all right?

[22:12] >> [clears throat]

[22:12] >> All right.

[22:13] Look around.

[22:15] >> [snorts]

[22:16] >> Just

[22:18] look

[22:19] around everywhere.

[22:22] Do you see randomness?

[22:24] There is an order to things.

[22:27] There is a

[22:29] There is a a shape, a form. There's no

[22:32] formlessness, just big blobs of nothing

[22:35] in the sky, right? You go, "Well,

[22:37] clouds are formless." Well, no, they're

[22:39] clouds. They're They're

[22:42] They're definitely things here.

[22:46] And it's not random.

[22:49] You We can see that everything

[22:51] everything is

[22:53] the way it is because of what came

[22:55] before this cause and effect, this

[22:57] constant transformation.

[23:00] That this moment right now is happening

[23:03] because of a confluence of just an

[23:06] unthinkable number of events.

[23:10] Right?

[23:12] We couldn't be doing this if without

[23:15] somebody inventing, you know, the

[23:16] internet and computers and microphones

[23:18] and stands and lights and haircuts

[23:22] [laughter]

[23:22] and clothes and I

[23:25] You it

[23:26] everything. There is this kind of this

[23:28] rolling

[23:30] inevitability about about things.

[23:34] All right.

[23:36] Now,

[23:38] um because our minds are limited

[23:43] and our primitive drive is we want to be

[23:45] safe, so we want some certainty about

[23:47] things.

[23:49] We think

[23:51] that we understand how things happened

[23:54] and why.

[23:56] And that that

[23:57] And that that's

[24:00] that's bad enough, but it's innocent.

[24:03] But it's when we get that idea, we start

[24:06] tinkering. So, "Oh, if I do this, then

[24:09] I'll make it like this." And now we want

[24:12] to make it the way we want to make it.

[24:15] Genetic engineering, you know.

[24:18] Uh

[24:19] uh genetic and genetically modified

[24:22] organisms, artificial intelligence, all

[24:25] of these things for us to try to

[24:28] create what we think should be.

[24:32] Trying to rid ourselves of the illusion

[24:36] of randomness, not actually seeing the

[24:39] incredible order and

[24:41] always messing up because we can only

[24:45] see this thread. We only see like this

[24:47] linear little thread of causation. We

[24:49] don't see the infinite dimensions of

[24:51] causation in every single moment. Isn't

[24:54] this a good data point? Everything

[24:56] causes everything.

[25:00] So,

[25:01] drop the idea. Just drop all your ideas

[25:04] of what it should be.

[25:06] All right.

[25:07] And look.

[25:09] You won't see randomness.

[25:14] You'll see this

[25:16] wonder. It's

[25:18] so complex, it's inconceivable.

[25:20] But yet

[25:22] it never messes up.

[25:25] It never repeats itself.

[25:29] And it's in constant transformation. It

[25:31] never sits still.

[25:34] All right.

[25:38] The sadness comes because

[25:42] we think

[25:44] in our minds unconsciously

[25:47] we associate the notion that if I if I

[25:50] just kind of let go of

[25:53] everything the way I think it should the

[25:55] way I want it to be,

[25:57] it will be horrible.

[26:00] That I've got to keep going. I've got to

[26:02] make something happen.

[26:05] And

[26:06] and the fear is that if I stop doing

[26:08] that,

[26:09] it's just going to get worse and I'm

[26:11] holding it together, you know, with a by

[26:13] a thread.

[26:15] The fact is anybody who's ever tried to

[26:17] even a little bit, including you, and

[26:20] I've seen you do it.

[26:21] Just a little bit, suddenly there's

[26:24] there's this sense of relief.

[26:27] Sometimes very small, sometimes bigger.

[26:29] But

[26:30] what I'm asking when I ask someone to

[26:34] simply let go of it for a moment.

[26:39] Are you going to fall into nothingness,

[26:40] a void, catastrophe?

[26:43] What you find is you.

[26:47] That you're here.

[26:52] That you are

[26:54] a part of this and

[26:57] and you are in it and it is in you. It's

[26:59] like, you know,

[27:02] a drop in the ocean and the ocean in

[27:04] every drop.

[27:06] Every single drop, every single bit of

[27:08] water has the whole

[27:10] ocean in it.

[27:12] In fact, it is the ocean, isn't it?

[27:14] >> [laughter]

[27:15] >> Look at this here. We can carry it

[27:17] around in our bodies.

[27:19] 80% water.

[27:23] So, sadness is the sense of loss.

[27:28] Is there really a loss

[27:31] of anything other than the suffering?

[27:36] It really is to be pondered deeply.

[27:39] And we see that we

[27:41] we've just been conditioned and trained

[27:44] to believe that somehow I personally am

[27:46] supposed to make all this happen and

[27:50] the perfect relationship and perfect

[27:52] health and perfect finances and perfect

[27:54] everything. And so we we're trying to do

[27:57] with our minds what they can't do.

[28:01] They simply can't do it.

[28:04] And [snorts] we get so afraid and so

[28:07] concerned that we can't do it. We end up

[28:09] trying to enforce it to force it to

[28:11] happen and

[28:12] and cause conflicts and wars and just

[28:16] unthinkable brutality and cruelty and

[28:20] pain inflicted on each other

[28:24] trying to control what can't be

[28:26] controlled

[28:28] through the through an instrument

[28:30] completely incapable of even fathoming

[28:33] it, let alone changing its course and

[28:36] making it something better.

[28:39] >> [laughter]

[28:41] [gasps and sighs]

[28:41] >> Uh

[28:45] I didn't feel good yesterday. That's why

[28:47] I canceled the class.

[28:49] Was those of you who in the class, no?

[28:55] So, what do you do with that time?

[28:58] There's There's a part of me that's

[29:00] always been a real doer. Get things done

[29:02] and

[29:03] when

[29:04] one time in my life I for a long time I

[29:08] only slept 4 hours a day.

[29:10] I just didn't need to sleep. I was just

[29:12] As my kids said, you know, my kids said,

[29:15] "I

[29:16] I've never seen anybody with that much

[29:18] energy. You just never run out." All

[29:21] right.

[29:22] So, yesterday I'm not feeling good. I

[29:23] can't do much of anything. What do I do?

[29:29] I decided to use it.

[29:31] You to watch to watch the impulse to do

[29:34] and all of that and to just settle into

[29:37] just being.

[29:39] Just being.

[29:44] Uh

[29:45] It's marvelous. It's peaceful. It

[29:48] doesn't get in the way of things having

[29:49] to get done at all.

[29:52] It It's just

[29:54] doing doesn't have to come from

[29:57] the sense that if I don't do it

[30:00] something bad's going to happen. It can

[30:02] come from the place of

[30:05] of

[30:06] of calm, confidence, peace, contentment.

[30:12] To be peaceful or contentment doesn't

[30:14] mean you're just going to sit on your

[30:15] ass all day. I'm so building nothing to

[30:18] No, it it it's the center of being

[30:21] around which activity takes place.

[30:24] It is the unmoving center around which

[30:27] the universe flows. All of the events

[30:32] They just you know unfathomably

[30:34] complex and interdependency of all of

[30:37] the events that make anything happen.

[30:40] All of those

[30:42] are

[30:43] are resting on this unmoving

[30:46] this unmoving

[30:48] ground of being.

[30:55] You can't have an infinite stream of

[30:57] cause and effect because every cause

[30:59] becomes an effect, every effect becomes

[31:00] a cause.

[31:01] There's got to be something there

[31:04] uncaused.

[31:07] There's something there that is real,

[31:10] absolute.

[31:12] Timeless. Has to be.

[31:15] Something other cuz everything has a

[31:17] cause well well

[31:20] Where did it start?

[31:23] Recognizing this people came up with all

[31:25] sorts of ideas about God and all of

[31:27] that.

[31:28] My version of God which is very personal

[31:31] and

[31:32] that God seems to want everything

[31:35] the way I do. Isn't that interesting?

[31:38] >> [laughter]

[31:42] >> He seems to think my way's the best way.

[31:44] Hmm. So I should

[31:46] So I should make you do it my way. Yeah.

[31:48] And do it my

[31:50] way.

[31:52] Ah.

[31:53] Ah. So is it still sad for you,

[31:56] Victoria?

[31:58] Ah.

[31:59] It wouldn't be sad if you realized what

[32:01] you were letting go of.

[32:06] Ah.

[32:07] What's going to be replaced by something

[32:10] inconceivably better.

[32:13] Ah.

[32:15] And that that would make adjustments to

[32:19] the experience. So you simply wouldn't

[32:21] experience things the same way.

[32:26] Ah. When you're sad, what does the world

[32:28] look like?

[32:30] Ah.

[32:30] Everything's sad.

[32:33] When you fall in love, what does the

[32:34] world look like? Oh my god, everything

[32:36] is beautiful, wonderful, right?

[32:39] The world hasn't changed.

[32:42] It's only the way we see it.

[32:44] That's it.

[32:46] We don't change. We are that unchanging

[32:48] center.

[32:49] It's only the way we see ourselves. What

[32:52] you entertain in your mind as I.

[32:57] That forms the world you see.

[33:00] But the world you see is not the world

[33:01] that is.

[33:03] Yeah.

[33:05] Ah.

[33:07] Ah.

[33:12] Yeah, let me know.

[33:14] Like

[33:15] And I get to see you again soon anyway.

[33:18] >> [laughter]

[33:20] >> You're not going to get out of my sight.

[33:22] Eva says, "Who Who said that I am

[33:25] suffering?

[33:27] Well, I can't see I. Yeah.

[33:31] Isn't it possible

[33:33] that it's just a thought, I

[33:36] and not actually you?

[33:40] Isn't it possible?

[33:43] Right?

[33:45] Sal said, "So we can see the thought I

[33:48] am in pain clearly or I'm finding this

[33:52] overwhelming.

[33:54] Can we see the I thought on its own in

[33:57] the same way?" Can you?

[34:02] Everyone

[34:04] Can you?

[34:07] Look.

[34:08] Yeah. Look.

[34:10] Can I see the I thought?

[34:13] The word I, yes. I can see the word I.

[34:18] And all words

[34:20] point to something that that word is

[34:23] based on, right?

[34:26] So the word the word pain, overwhelm

[34:30] Those are actual feelings I can point

[34:32] to. Yeah, they're subtle. It's not like,

[34:33] you know

[34:34] the microphone, right?

[34:36] I can point at microphone. I can point

[34:37] at this microphone.

[34:39] It's more subtle. It's more internal,

[34:41] but it does have a definite shape.

[34:44] Sadness feels different than than

[34:47] happiness, right? Love feels different

[34:49] than anger.

[34:51] They're

[34:52] They're They're not the same as a an

[34:54] object out here in in the external

[34:56] world, but but they're quite

[34:58] identifiable, aren't they?

[35:02] Now, what is the I

[35:04] thought pointing at?

[35:07] For most, the I thought is well, I'm me.

[35:12] I'm Greg. I'm 74. I live in Shoreline in

[35:16] Washington in the US and

[35:19] I'm online and I do these things and I

[35:21] have these gadgets and

[35:23] etc. And I

[35:24] was I was born in Illinois. This whole

[35:26] story. I I was this, I was that, I was

[35:29] this, I was that.

[35:30] All of which are experiences being had.

[35:33] Yeah?

[35:35] We're saying I am.

[35:43] So

[35:44] what is the I pointing at? If you look,

[35:46] you find that

[35:49] the I that it's pointing at

[35:51] it's not like I say my car and I can

[35:55] point to my car.

[35:57] You find that I say my car

[35:59] and [clears throat] that thought is only

[36:01] pointing to another thought of car.

[36:04] It's not actually the car.

[36:07] The I thought, its reference point is

[36:10] actually just another thought.

[36:14] More subtle.

[36:17] >> [clears throat]

[36:18] >> Even invisible.

[36:21] >> [laughter]

[36:21] >> More of an influence than an actual

[36:23] thought, but it is a movement and you

[36:25] find that wait a minute, if if this

[36:28] thought is only referring to another

[36:30] thought

[36:34] what's real?

[36:36] Cuz

[36:38] And if I've been

[36:39] my whole I has been based on the

[36:42] existence of what in fact is just a

[36:44] thought

[36:47] not pointing to anything, maybe even

[36:49] made up, totally imaginary. No wonder I

[36:53] feel so unstable.

[36:55] There's nothing solid there.

[36:58] Yet

[37:00] I am. I do exist. I'm not a thought. I'm

[37:04] not an illusion.

[37:08] The I thought

[37:11] in and of itself has is nothing. It's

[37:13] just a It's just a thought. It's an

[37:15] index. It's a pointer to something.

[37:19] And for the most part, that index has

[37:21] been pointing in the wrong to the wrong

[37:22] place, to what in fact is just another

[37:25] thought.

[37:27] So

[37:30] where is the actual I?

[37:36] And is that suffering?

[37:42] Well

[37:43] when the teacher says

[37:45] "Look to that which you know for a fact

[37:50] is and it's not a thought."

[37:53] And what's that?

[37:55] I am. Even those words I am are a

[37:58] pointer, right?

[38:02] So

[38:03] that But they're pointing at a fact.

[38:06] Not another thought, not a belief.

[38:09] I am. It's a fact.

[38:11] Right?

[38:14] But But what's there? This I.

[38:18] I mean, if I

[38:19] it's pointing the I is pointing to

[38:21] another thought of I, well, I could see

[38:23] it. Oh, there there it is.

[38:26] This is more troublesome because

[38:29] the actual I the one that's here, the

[38:32] one that isn't a thought

[38:35] I can't see it.

[38:41] Doesn't look like there's anything here,

[38:43] but there is. I'm here.

[38:45] Yeah.

[38:46] And And this is This is the realm of of

[38:50] non-dual self inquiry.

[38:53] The mind and our training

[38:56] says the I must be some kind of

[38:59] concrete, palpable, perceivable shape

[39:04] for it to be real.

[39:08] But every shape everything perceived

[39:12] is only a perception and it's not

[39:15] actually me.

[39:17] Can't be. I'm looking at it.

[39:21] And you run into

[39:23] the thing that the mind does not want to

[39:26] accept and that is I cannot perceive

[39:29] myself.

[39:32] I can't.

[39:34] So no image I have of myself of any

[39:38] shape or form or content or history or

[39:41] memory is not what I am, only thoughts.

[39:49] So,

[39:51] the only place I can go

[39:54] to find what I actually am

[39:57] [clears throat]

[39:57] is by putting my attention

[40:00] on

[40:02] what's seeing.

[40:04] The fact that I exist, and simply whoop

[40:10] pushing aside

[40:11] refusing to acknowledge every object,

[40:14] thought, experience that presents itself

[40:18] as me.

[40:20] And sometimes just this painful thought

[40:22] comes up. Right? The painful experience

[40:24] and the thought comes up. Go, "I don't

[40:26] like that." Right?

[40:28] Whoop.

[40:29] I I don't like Show me this I that

[40:32] doesn't like that.

[40:36] Well, there's a feeling of not liking

[40:38] it, but I'm I'm here looking at it.

[40:45] And what if that thought, I don't like

[40:47] it, never never occurred to me?

[40:50] It would have never occurred, just never

[40:51] popped into my head.

[40:54] The I'm just here.

[40:57] Pain is here, or some kind of

[40:58] experience. Feel like a dog.

[41:01] Right?

[41:01] It's there. It hurts.

[41:03] But it's not going, "Man, I don't like

[41:05] this." All this [clears throat] stuff.

[41:08] There's no I there

[41:10] to take ownership of it. It just It just

[41:12] becomes experience.

[41:15] To who?

[41:19] Take that thought away, you're still

[41:21] here.

[41:22] Everything the experience is still here.

[41:27] But what's missing

[41:29] is the sense of this I that is

[41:31] suffering.

[41:37] Are you guys following this?

[41:43] Yeah, it's a subtle one.

[41:48] This isn't knowledge.

[41:50] This isn't uh you know,

[41:53] like they said, truth is too close and

[41:55] too simple for us to grasp it as

[41:56] knowledge. It's not knowledge.

[41:59] Knowledge is secondary.

[42:03] I have knowledge of stuff that I can use

[42:05] to speak about it, but that knowledge is

[42:07] not it. You're it.

[42:12] So, it's not knowledge that can be can

[42:14] be gained because that, too, is relative

[42:16] to

[42:18] It has a cause. It has a beginning. It

[42:20] has an end. It has all of these

[42:21] characteristics that make it

[42:23] perceivable. Right?

[42:25] How do I know me? Well,

[42:29] you know that you are, right?

[42:32] But

[42:34] you

[42:36] It doesn't need confirmation. That's not

[42:38] knowledge in

[42:40] that it is not knowledge that's derived.

[42:43] I can say I know that I am, but even

[42:46] those words that convey information,

[42:50] right?

[42:51] are only a representative of the fact

[42:54] which cannot really be articulated.

[42:59] And

[43:00] and

[43:01] I don't have to articulate it

[43:04] >> [laughter]

[43:05] >> to be it.

[43:08] Fact if I couldn't speak, I couldn't

[43:10] here, I would still be it.

[43:17] All right. Boy, I really went off on a

[43:18] tangent there. I hope that was useful.

[43:24] So, the I

[43:26] thought,

[43:27] right?

[43:29] is

[43:30] is really

[43:31] uh

[43:33] I had to go back now. What is this Oh,

[43:34] it's all right.

[43:35] Um the I thought

[43:38] Ramana referred to it. He says He said

[43:41] like a spirit

[43:44] impalpable

[43:46] the I thought arises.

[43:52] The I thought arises arises in us when

[43:55] we were our very young, but it is not

[43:58] the

[43:58] words I yet.

[44:02] It is the sense

[44:05] I I am. Right?

[44:08] A concrete sense of I am, prior to which

[44:11] you just are.

[44:15] Ramana referred to that as the I

[44:18] thought. [snorts]

[44:19] Cuz out of that comes the words I am

[44:22] when we have words to to say it. We can

[44:24] articulate I am this or that,

[44:28] but we're already I feeling I am pulling

[44:33] towards identifying with something

[44:36] before the words are there. In other

[44:38] words, the I am the body

[44:41] thought feeling is there before we have

[44:45] any idea of the words to articulate it.

[44:48] In fact,

[44:50] for most

[44:51] the words I am the body

[44:54] never really come out of their mouth,

[44:57] and it's believed before any of the

[45:00] words

[45:01] have formed.

[45:05] I am

[45:07] the body.

[45:09] The moment that happens, right?

[45:13] Not only do we get compressed within a

[45:16] form,

[45:17] but the body, which in fact did not

[45:20] exist before,

[45:22] comes into being as the perception of

[45:27] experience.

[45:29] The focal point of experience.

[45:32] The body does not exist separate from

[45:35] the mind.

[45:36] From the I thought.

[45:40] Take away the I thought, and what do you

[45:41] have?

[45:42] Infinite

[45:44] undifferentiated,

[45:45] illimitable experience.

[45:49] Not confined to an I.

[45:54] With the I thought, I am the body,

[45:58] I create a form

[46:04] bounded,

[46:06] and then all experience becomes

[46:09] other. I'm not that.

[46:15] And this is the separation that we feel.

[46:18] And with it comes fear, shame,

[46:22] the fear of loss, fear of death,

[46:26] fear of of of inadequacy. All of it

[46:29] comes from there. It It is the It is

[46:31] really the

[46:33] the essential the existential trauma.

[46:39] The experiences of trauma in childhood

[46:43] come after that.

[46:48] Am I going too far with this in any

[46:50] direction?

[46:53] Marty, hi Marty. Definitely connecting.

[46:56] Cool, good.

[46:58] I want to keep going here for a bit cuz

[47:01] I'll take a sip of this first.

[47:06] It says, "I see suffering. However, I

[47:08] don't see this. I can't see I because I

[47:12] am I. So, suffering does not belong to I

[47:16] who is just seeing it."

[47:20] Yes.

[47:34] >> [clears throat]

[47:35] >> Because I am I. Yes. So,

[47:39] you know, you

[47:40] The [clears throat] I cannot see itself,

[47:42] can it?

[47:45] When we really think in just the most

[47:47] practical ways to really look at it, you

[47:49] know, you know, I

[47:51] I have images of what I look like,

[47:55] but I've never actually seen my own

[47:57] face.

[48:00] Right?

[48:01] I mean, it's funny.

[48:03] >> [clears throat]

[48:04] >> I even mentioned that to my

[48:06] granddaughter once several

[48:08] uh a few years ago. Every now and then I

[48:10] throw these little things out there.

[48:12] And she goes, "What?" Yeah, it's it's

[48:15] true. And then

[48:17] probably about a year later I'm I was

[48:18] just sitting in the

[48:20] in the room where she was looking in the

[48:21] mirror. She goes,

[48:23] "You know, Papa,

[48:25] you can't see your own face."

[48:28] >> [laughter]

[48:31] >> That's my granddaughter.

[48:33] Yeah.

[48:34] >> [laughter]

[48:37] >> Yeah, it's a little familial pride.

[48:39] Yeah.

[48:41] I was just

[48:42] happy to see the

[48:43] the these seeds were being seeds were

[48:46] being planted. Yeah. Anyway,

[48:49] um

[48:51] got off on got off on that.

[48:54] The But it's a fact, isn't it? So, all

[48:57] of the ideas, all of the pictures in our

[48:59] minds that we have of ourselves,

[49:02] we've not actually seen.

[49:06] It's always us as seen

[49:09] from somewhere outside the body, isn't

[49:12] it?

[49:15] Okay, so

[49:17] then it's basically second hand

[49:19] knowledge. How do I get first hand

[49:20] knowledge of me?

[49:25] Oh, I can't see me.

[49:28] I can't see myself directly. So, none of

[49:30] the information I've got is direct. It's

[49:32] all indirect. It's all hearsay.

[49:34] Okay. So, what do I know then about me?

[49:37] Directly.

[49:39] Well, I

[49:41] keep coming you back bringing you back

[49:42] to that same place. I know I am.

[49:49] What do I look like

[49:50] from here?

[49:54] So, that means any image you hold of

[49:55] yourself, any image whatsoever,

[49:59] is not actually you.

[50:02] It's not your experience of you.

[50:05] You don't experience yourself as you

[50:07] look in the mirror.

[50:09] You experience yourself here

[50:11] looking from here

[50:13] at a mirror

[50:15] and seeing a face,

[50:17] a face that is changing, right?

[50:20] Doesn't look the same way as it did

[50:23] not that long ago and won't look the

[50:25] same

[50:27] some time from now and at some point way

[50:29] in the future it won't be a face at all.

[50:32] It'll just be a bunch of fundamental

[50:34] material being recycled.

[50:40] Now, this is can be uncomfortable

[50:43] because

[50:44] we have all been taught and our minds

[50:47] have been trained when we know something

[50:49] it's very concrete. This is what it is.

[50:54] But this is not so concrete

[50:57] and our concreteness limits the picture.

[51:00] Yeah.

[51:02] So,

[51:03] uh and I have changed from the name

[51:06] Anne's blog.

[51:08] Plan uh uh

[51:10] too long.

[51:12] Give and made no sense. So, yes, we have

[51:14] I all right. Okay, good. Yeah. I don't

[51:17] think there was a picture there before

[51:19] either when it was Anne's blog. I

[51:20] remember that.

[51:22] Yeah, I don't don't remember the picture

[51:24] there though.

[51:25] Uh so, anyway, welcome again. Welcome to

[51:29] the real you and now that we have

[51:31] thrown off

[51:32] the pseudonym.

[51:34] Russia, hello Russia. I need to know how

[51:37] I can feel the truth

[51:39] from

[51:41] my body.

[51:42] Mhm.

[51:48] Could you

[51:50] I'll make my biggest best guess here,

[51:51] but could you clarify that

[51:54] the feel the truth from [snorts]

[51:56] the body.

[51:58] Right. Now, the body doesn't isn't

[52:01] really the one that feels. Right.

[52:04] You, the consciousness in it is what is

[52:07] cognizing everything.

[52:10] And so, the truth uh

[52:14] uh

[52:14] speaking of the truth of the body or the

[52:17] experience and to you know,

[52:19] the experience of a living body, right?

[52:24] Or the the truth is you're not the body.

[52:28] You're the consciousness that animates

[52:30] the body.

[52:32] Right.

[52:33] And so, the body the consciousness

[52:36] experiences

[52:38] a body

[52:39] and the experience is true. We do have

[52:43] these experiences.

[52:47] And

[52:48] the question here is what is it that's

[52:52] having that experience?

[52:55] The truth isn't in the actual content of

[52:59] the experience.

[53:02] Nor is it in the experiencing of the

[53:04] experience. It is in the in that which

[53:07] is seeing. That which is

[53:10] experiencing,

[53:12] right?

[53:12] And it's very subtle, very subtle.

[53:15] Because everything

[53:16] everything that is experienced reports

[53:20] to

[53:21] here.

[53:24] The consciousness that's aware of it.

[53:27] Everything does.

[53:29] The eye isn't actually seeing, right?

[53:32] We say the eye sees.

[53:35] Looking at it. I mean, even physically,

[53:37] physiologically, the eye does not

[53:40] cognize what it's seeing. It's not

[53:43] placing any judgment or any value or any

[53:45] it's simply

[53:46] like a camera collecting light. That's

[53:48] all it does.

[53:50] The camera that is, you know, watching

[53:52] me right now is not seeing me.

[53:55] Right?

[53:57] This is subtle, right? Oh, what the

[53:59] camera sees. It's

[54:01] it's good. It's okay. It's a convention.

[54:03] It's harmless. But we recognize it's it

[54:06] as that which cognizes is not seeing

[54:09] anything. It's just a vehicle. It's just

[54:12] a instrument, a function.

[54:14] And so, the eye is merely collecting

[54:17] light

[54:18] and then it's going through all sorts of

[54:19] different phases and stuff, none of

[54:22] which

[54:23] uh is actually cognizing anything.

[54:26] >> [laughter]

[54:27] >> It's just stuff that's being manipulated

[54:30] and moved around and shoved together and

[54:32] had things associated with it and

[54:33] finally it gets to some place where

[54:36] there's cognizance. Well, that's you,

[54:38] right? So, you say I see it.

[54:43] Nothing else in that whole chain can say

[54:46] I

[54:47] see it because there's nothing else

[54:50] sentient there. There's no cognition

[54:52] there.

[54:55] So, the truth is

[54:59] the actual, the fact, the reality is

[55:02] only that which is cognizing.

[55:07] Everything else i- is being cognized.

[55:14] What is the actual nature

[55:18] of that which is cognizing because

[55:20] clearly that is real.

[55:25] The idea that the camera sees isn't

[55:28] real.

[55:29] It's

[55:30] It's an experience and we can use the

[55:32] word for its capacity for collecting

[55:35] light. Same with the eye.

[55:38] But only that which is cognizes.

[55:46] I hope I got near that for you, Russia.

[55:51] Uh Lena David, very few questions

[55:55] capable of being expressed arise these

[55:57] days. Wonderful.

[55:59] Which isn't great for live Q&A.

[56:01] [laughter]

[56:02] Well, be like we can be like Ramana and

[56:05] just sit together in silence. That

[56:07] works too. Yeah, it's weird, huh?

[56:09] I mean,

[56:11] in in media, you know,

[56:13] the the worst thing that can happen is

[56:16] silence, dead air air space. People just

[56:20] sitting around,

[56:21] you know, meditating i- isn't great for

[56:24] media, you know, it's kind of like

[56:25] having the wallpaper channel or

[56:27] something. It's just

[56:30] >> [laughter]

[56:31] >> But the process certainly continues with

[56:34] deep reflection on the thoughts,

[56:36] feelings, and sensations which arise.

[56:40] Sitting and listening

[56:43] also helps deepen any understanding

[56:46] here. Many thanks. Yeah.

[56:50] Yeah, it does.

[56:51] It even when you're like you are beyond

[56:55] where you need

[56:57] where you need to know something.

[57:00] But it does help

[57:03] in this environment with the teaching

[57:06] to Oh, yeah, that's right. Just just

[57:09] pull our attention back.

[57:11] Yeah.

[57:13] Sometimes I will I will put on a satsang

[57:16] from my own teacher.

[57:19] And he always opens his satsangs with

[57:22] this this welcome.

[57:25] You know,

[57:26] you know, Namaste. Welcome to satsang.

[57:29] And sometimes that's all I have to hear

[57:31] his voice going,

[57:33] "Namaste. Welcome to

[57:35] I turn it off. I'm good.

[57:40] Cuz i- it isn't even the words per per

[57:43] se, right? Just something to

[57:45] to to pull our attention back because

[57:48] i- it can seem so

[57:50] powerful, so

[57:52] alluring, right?

[57:55] When we can wake up in the morning and

[57:57] feel totally unclear, no clarity

[57:59] whatsoever,

[58:01] and you remember, "Oh, right.

[58:03] I'm beholding

[58:05] the

[58:06] absence of clarity.

[58:08] I see the clarity and the and the

[58:12] confusion. I see them both

[58:15] clearly.

[58:17] I am beyond that.

[58:18] And the attention goes that to there.

[58:21] Right?

[58:26] It's a good one for you. Something that

[58:29] Ramana said to uh It was actually he

[58:32] said it to the first European who made

[58:36] his way to

[58:37] to

[58:38] to the ashram to to speak to him

[58:42] in 1930 something.

[58:49] And he said, "I

[58:50] I

[58:51] I I use the words that the

[58:55] teacher

[58:57] gives to his closest students.

[59:00] From now onwards,

[59:03] in meditation,

[59:08] focus the thought of meditation

[59:11] not on the seeing

[59:13] or on that which is seen,

[59:17] but only on that which sees, unmovingly

[59:21] on that which sees.

[59:28] The

[59:30] even the the I am, all of it, whatever

[59:32] is seen.

[59:33] Yeah.

[59:35] If this resonates with anyone,

[59:38] take it up.

[59:41] And you'll notice that our attention is

[59:43] always being pulled back into the

[59:45] content, into what is being seen.

[59:51] And then

[59:52] then the seeing, right? Come back to

[59:54] this place where it Well, yeah, it's all

[59:56] being seen. There's seeing happening,

[59:59] and the seeing is

[1:00:00] is the same no matter what is being

[1:00:02] seen.

[1:00:05] And then you notice

[1:00:07] your attention is brought to the the

[1:00:10] place where

[1:00:12] well,

[1:00:13] even the seeing is being seen.

[1:00:21] The seeing is a function.

[1:00:24] >> [clears throat]

[1:00:30] >> And you look for that which is seeing.

[1:00:32] The seeing is

[1:00:34] reporting that somewhere.

[1:00:39] What

[1:00:41] I don't even like the word what anymore,

[1:00:44] what's that? Works for somebody, but

[1:00:46] this is resonating, which I think it

[1:00:47] will with you, too.

[1:00:49] That which sees. Now, there you don't

[1:00:51] wrap a who, you don't wrap a what,

[1:00:52] anything around, it's just

[1:00:54] whatever that is, it's seeing.

[1:00:58] And you can't help but notice, but that

[1:01:01] I'm seeing.

[1:01:05] So, just set aside the words I,

[1:01:08] that which sees.

[1:01:12] Very important.

[1:01:16] I think might be a good thing for you.

[1:01:18] Yeah.

[1:01:21] You guys uh

[1:01:22] yeah.

[1:01:23] Cuz you don't have any questions

[1:01:24] anymore. You don't need any more

[1:01:26] knowledge, and you know it.

[1:01:28] >> [laughter]

[1:01:29] >> You just just keep knock knock knocking

[1:01:32] on Nirvana's door.

[1:01:37] This little by little grace peels away

[1:01:39] all the remnants of the personal I.

[1:01:44] Right up to the point where

[1:01:46] cuz you know there's there's a point at

[1:01:48] which you you can surrender everything,

[1:01:50] but but how do you surrender yourself?

[1:01:57] How do you let go of I? How does the I

[1:01:59] vanish?

[1:02:04] This is kind of the the

[1:02:06] paradox of the crucifixion. Christ lent

[1:02:09] himself

[1:02:11] to to be completely

[1:02:15] to completely vanish, let go of

[1:02:17] everything including him.

[1:02:22] Into thy hands I commit my spirit. Just

[1:02:24] to

[1:02:25] to

[1:02:28] oneness with God, oneness with the

[1:02:32] absolute.

[1:02:35] >> [snorts]

[1:02:35] >> Means just one.

[1:02:41] There's me and God. One of us has got to

[1:02:42] disappear.

[1:02:47] That sense of I

[1:02:50] that appeared

[1:02:52] became I am the body in a world

[1:02:55] all the way to the return trip

[1:02:58] so that the sense I that arose

[1:03:02] at last

[1:03:04] subsides, and all that's left is the

[1:03:07] infinite one. Whether I, you, those are

[1:03:10] all irrelevant now.

[1:03:15] >> [sighs]

[1:03:34] >> Eva, you know

[1:03:38] I could just see you, Eva. You know,

[1:03:39] Jim,

[1:03:40] I'm it seems I saw this so clearly first

[1:03:43] time

[1:03:45] that I has nothing in common with

[1:03:47] suffering. No.

[1:03:49] It is simply the

[1:03:51] the cognition of experience.

[1:03:55] And

[1:03:57] the suffering of experience is actually

[1:04:01] part of the experience.

[1:04:05] Cuz everything we call suffering is just

[1:04:07] more movements of thought, right?

[1:04:10] The ultimate experiencer

[1:04:13] that is witnessing the whole thing on

[1:04:15] this screen is

[1:04:17] which is you

[1:04:18] are you suffering? You will suffer

[1:04:23] as long as that

[1:04:25] I

[1:04:27] remains

[1:04:29] identified with form.

[1:04:32] I

[1:04:33] am seeing it.

[1:04:35] Well, then who is that I that sees it?

[1:04:40] And is the seeing of something

[1:04:45] that is the perceiving in any any shape

[1:04:50] is it affected by what it sees?

[1:04:59] Or is that which is affected

[1:05:03] and upset, so suffering

[1:05:06] >> [snorts]

[1:05:06] >> anxious, pissed off, whatever,

[1:05:09] isn't that also just being seen by that

[1:05:13] same seeing?

[1:05:15] Is the seeing itself affected? Does it

[1:05:18] become less than seeing?

[1:05:24] These are

[1:05:25] you know,

[1:05:26] this kind of inquiry is not something

[1:05:28] you're going to run into at school.

[1:05:30] Most people you talk about this,

[1:05:33] yeah, whatever. There's no interest in

[1:05:35] it. If you're drawn to this, there's a

[1:05:37] reason.

[1:05:41] And I don't want it to seem like it's

[1:05:43] like it's totally

[1:05:45] intellectual. In fact, it's not

[1:05:46] intellectual at all. Intellect is is

[1:05:48] valuable because it can help us

[1:05:51] not get it can help us recognize that we

[1:05:55] live under with assumptions and beliefs.

[1:05:58] >> [laughter]

[1:05:59] >> And and can really be a a tool in the

[1:06:02] search for that which is not a belief.

[1:06:07] But the discovery is not intellectual.

[1:06:11] When

[1:06:13] that happens or as that happens, the

[1:06:14] intellect becomes more refined. It

[1:06:16] becomes a really great tool for giving

[1:06:18] expression to

[1:06:20] But you are not a thought. You're not a

[1:06:22] concept. You're not an idea.

[1:06:25] And no idea

[1:06:26] could possibly capture the reality of

[1:06:29] you, just like the idea of, I don't

[1:06:32] know, anything, a tree doesn't capture

[1:06:35] the tree.

[1:06:37] Not even close. It's a representation,

[1:06:39] an index, a pointer, nothing more.

[1:06:42] The tree itself stands on its own, and

[1:06:44] the experience of that is quite

[1:06:46] different.

[1:06:47] It's real.

[1:06:51] Ben Benjay,

[1:06:54] I get upset that I'm not meditating.

[1:06:58] Not journaling, not doing inner work,

[1:07:00] not doing enough.

[1:07:02] Even when I do do something, the same

[1:07:04] voice says I'm not doing I'm I'm not

[1:07:06] doing it. It's the wrong thing. Can't be

[1:07:09] pleased.

[1:07:10] Yeah. [snorts]

[1:07:11] Um okay. So, here's the deal.

[1:07:16] Who told you you're supposed to meditate

[1:07:19] or journal?

[1:07:20] Who told you you have to do this inner

[1:07:22] work?

[1:07:24] Anything that comes with a demand

[1:07:27] coercion or, you know, some kind of

[1:07:30] threat or you're going to lose out,

[1:07:32] right? It's kind of like the things

[1:07:34] get it while supplies last, right? That

[1:07:36] kind of nonsense.

[1:07:39] It's going to create artificial

[1:07:40] scarcity.

[1:07:41] That's not truth.

[1:07:45] Because it's not loving.

[1:07:48] If I have to be forced to meditate, it

[1:07:50] means I I don't want to I can't go

[1:07:51] away. I [snorts] don't want to do it.

[1:07:54] And

[1:07:55] if if you've never had

[1:07:57] the experience of meditation as it's

[1:08:00] really supposed to be

[1:08:02] you won't want to do it.

[1:08:04] >> [laughter]

[1:08:05] >> Hours and hours in funny clothes and

[1:08:06] weird positions, and like who's

[1:08:09] No, thank you.

[1:08:10] Right?

[1:08:12] So, notice there's just kind of this

[1:08:14] sense that you have to do something,

[1:08:16] that this is what it is or you're going

[1:08:17] to be a mess and left out in in the

[1:08:19] light. Just

[1:08:20] For one moment, my friend, just set that

[1:08:23] all to the side.

[1:08:24] All right? Just set it all to the side.

[1:08:27] It's like

[1:08:30] not being intimidated or pressured or

[1:08:33] threatened to do something.

[1:08:35] >> [clears throat]

[1:08:37] >> You just want to

[1:08:39] you want to find yourself, right?

[1:08:41] >> [clears throat]

[1:08:42] >> There's a feeling that something's

[1:08:44] missing.

[1:08:45] Right?

[1:08:47] And I want to find it.

[1:08:50] Right? It's really that simple.

[1:08:54] And so there's all sorts of people out

[1:08:56] there, oh, you got to meditate, and you

[1:08:57] got to do this, do this kind of work,

[1:08:58] and do this kind of work, and blah blah

[1:08:59] blah blah blah blah.

[1:09:01] And

[1:09:03] I say, no, you don't.

[1:09:07] Just stay with your actual desire.

[1:09:11] Right?

[1:09:13] Your heart is reaching for something.

[1:09:16] Right?

[1:09:17] And and you don't know what it is.

[1:09:20] So, put aside everything anybody has

[1:09:23] ever told you you're supposed to do

[1:09:27] in order to find that. And instead just

[1:09:30] Let's just sit together with this with

[1:09:32] this desire.

[1:09:34] All right?

[1:09:34] >> [clears throat]

[1:09:38] >> The real teacher never tells you what to

[1:09:40] do.

[1:09:41] Always just keeps pointing you back to

[1:09:43] yourself. What do you want? What's here

[1:09:45] What are you actually feeling?

[1:09:48] What are you reaching for?

[1:09:52] But somehow you feel, you know, I'm

[1:09:54] feeling cuz I didn't do this this and

[1:09:56] I'm feeling this because of this. Just

[1:10:00] It's okay?

[1:10:04] >> [laughter]

[1:10:06] >> It is so simple.

[1:10:10] I yearn for something.

[1:10:14] And uh

[1:10:16] nothing I've ever tried or done has

[1:10:18] quenched it. Do the meditation. It's

[1:10:20] just like

[1:10:21] It's just like

[1:10:23] It's

[1:10:24] It makes no sense to you.

[1:10:27] So, don't.

[1:10:28] Don't

[1:10:29] I honor you that if I'm not doing it

[1:10:32] because I don't want to. Okay. Okay,

[1:10:35] fine. Good. Fine. I don't want to do

[1:10:38] anything that's stupid either.

[1:10:40] I don't want to do anything that doesn't

[1:10:41] work.

[1:10:42] Why? Cuz somebody said I'm supposed to?

[1:10:47] How about this?

[1:10:51] What I teach is that

[1:10:53] just I want you to just look at

[1:10:56] yourself. I want you to put everything

[1:10:57] else aside.

[1:10:59] Put you at the center

[1:11:01] and just

[1:11:02] look. No beliefs, no ideas, no concepts.

[1:11:05] Just look.

[1:11:08] And what do you find?

[1:11:12] No No burdens.

[1:11:16] None of that.

[1:11:18] No rules.

[1:11:20] No conditions.

[1:11:22] >> [clears throat]

[1:11:23] >> Happiness is not

[1:11:26] you know, a carrot being held in front

[1:11:27] of the donkey. Oh, do all of this and

[1:11:29] then you'll get this.

[1:11:31] Just

[1:11:33] instead, let's honor you.

[1:11:38] >> [clears throat]

[1:11:40] >> Something in you

[1:11:43] moved you towards

[1:11:46] this kind of thing.

[1:11:48] The inner work, meditating, whatever it

[1:11:50] is. Something inside you moved that

[1:11:52] moved you towards that, right?

[1:11:54] Let's pay attention to that. Cuz that's

[1:11:56] real. That's you.

[1:11:58] We're not making it up.

[1:12:00] Right?

[1:12:00] It's a real thing. So, you It's really

[1:12:04] coming from you.

[1:12:06] And just be with that.

[1:12:09] So,

[1:12:12] let yourself feel that.

[1:12:15] Not run off to a

[1:12:16] to some solution to it and the like.

[1:12:20] As if it was a problem.

[1:12:22] >> [clears throat]

[1:12:24] >> So, oftentimes that

[1:12:28] the call, the invitation

[1:12:31] to the truth of you

[1:12:34] appears as a just a a discomfort with

[1:12:37] what is.

[1:12:40] Not because there's anything wrong with

[1:12:42] you,

[1:12:43] but because

[1:12:44] my sense of myself is simply too small

[1:12:47] to contain

[1:12:49] this.

[1:12:50] It needs

[1:12:52] It needs those boundaries expanded.

[1:12:59] I am

[1:13:02] more than happy to talk to you about it

[1:13:06] in in person. I do I offer free time to

[1:13:09] folks

[1:13:12] who are sincerely wanting to dig into

[1:13:14] this into this stuff.

[1:13:16] I'm

[1:13:21] There are useful tools for inner work

[1:13:25] and and the like. But they're only

[1:13:28] tools.

[1:13:31] And they're only as as good as the

[1:13:33] person who uses them, quite frankly.

[1:13:37] Some great seems like great Oh, this is

[1:13:39] such a great thing. It works so fine.

[1:13:42] Well, how come it didn't work for me?

[1:13:44] Because

[1:13:47] it's a bigger picture than that.

[1:13:54] Yeah.

[1:13:55] So,

[1:13:56] yeah, [clears throat] you're not doing

[1:13:57] enough.

[1:13:58] I'm not doing enough. That's all That

[1:14:01] voice is

[1:14:02] It doesn't matter how much you do. That

[1:14:03] voice is going to be there saying I

[1:14:05] Because that voice has nothing to do

[1:14:08] with what you're doing. It's just It's a

[1:14:10] deep program inside of you that that's

[1:14:13] all it knows how to say.

[1:14:15] Period. And it's never satisfied.

[1:14:20] But it's not you.

[1:14:22] That's just the conditioning of the

[1:14:23] system. Which you can come to see as

[1:14:26] simply not me.

[1:14:28] You're not broken.

[1:14:30] You're not.

[1:14:35] The sense of ourselves, we see ourselves

[1:14:37] as broken and therefore experience

[1:14:39] ourselves as if we are broken when

[1:14:40] you're not.

[1:14:45] And meditation? Hmm, simple.

[1:14:50] Just looking at that at myself.

[1:14:54] Looking to see what I can actually see.

[1:14:59] So, I do a meditation. Let's do a quick

[1:15:01] one right now. Just If you want to,

[1:15:03] close your eyes. Take a couple breaths.

[1:15:06] Let go of everything.

[1:15:08] You know nothing.

[1:15:09] You're here

[1:15:11] not to make something happen or to fix

[1:15:13] something, but to actually see what's

[1:15:16] here.

[1:15:19] I want to just see

[1:15:22] what's here without

[1:15:24] the interfere of you know, "Oh, got to

[1:15:26] fix it. Oh, this is a problem." No

[1:15:27] thoughts about it whatsoever. Just feel.

[1:15:30] Just feel your own presence.

[1:15:33] Whatever's there.

[1:15:35] There's tension, anxiousness, whatever

[1:15:37] whatever. Just for a moment, just don't

[1:15:39] do anything with it.

[1:15:42] Do nothing with it. Just feel it.

[1:15:49] No

[1:15:49] No attempt to even fix it. Oh God, poor

[1:15:53] body and poor heart.

[1:15:55] Poor you.

[1:15:57] Just the pressure. Fix this. Fix this.

[1:15:59] Fix this. Huh?

[1:16:01] Yeah.

[1:16:02] That's when I give my my most beautiful

[1:16:04] man mantra is

[1:16:06] "Ah, it.

[1:16:08] Go fix yourself."

[1:16:12] No pressure.

[1:16:14] No mission. No goal. No responsibility.

[1:16:17] Just

[1:16:18] look what's here.

[1:16:25] And notice that you can.

[1:16:30] Notice that there's very much something

[1:16:32] here.

[1:16:34] It sees all the thoughts. It sees the

[1:16:36] feelings. It sees the sensations. It

[1:16:39] experiences all of that.

[1:16:48] And at [clears throat] the same time

[1:16:50] it isn't that.

[1:16:54] Again, this isn't a belief. I'm not I'm

[1:16:55] asking you to believe anything. Look for

[1:16:57] yourself.

[1:16:59] You see the thoughts.

[1:17:02] You feel those feelings.

[1:17:05] You feel those sensations of the body.

[1:17:09] All of it.

[1:17:11] Paying no attention to

[1:17:14] to what they are labeling them or what

[1:17:16] or what's supposed to happen with them.

[1:17:18] And instead just notice.

[1:17:21] Yeah, I am seeing

[1:17:23] all of them.

[1:17:27] So, whatever I am

[1:17:33] it's it it it it's something other than

[1:17:36] that.

[1:17:38] And this is just here.

[1:17:43] The seeing is just I didn't start it. I

[1:17:44] didn't have to, you know,

[1:17:47] turn the ignition and start it up. It's

[1:17:51] It's I'm just here.

[1:17:53] It's effortless.

[1:17:57] Again.

[1:17:59] Uh

[1:18:01] It's not a thought, right? I'm not

[1:18:03] putting a belief in your head. I'm just

[1:18:04] inviting you to look. See for yourself.

[1:18:11] And notice that that's that seeing, that

[1:18:14] kind of presence.

[1:18:16] Aware of all of it. Not dismissing any

[1:18:18] of it.

[1:18:19] Not

[1:18:20] you know, saying bad illusion or

[1:18:22] anything like that.

[1:18:26] But is there anything wrong with that?

[1:18:30] Is there anything there that needs to be

[1:18:31] changed or fixed or

[1:18:34] Yeah, there's stuff happening.

[1:18:38] It has to be dealt with. But

[1:18:40] but you

[1:18:43] I'm I'm here seeing all of this.

[1:18:48] And without any reference to any of

[1:18:50] that.

[1:18:51] Is there anything wrong here? Is there

[1:18:53] anything wrong with you?

[1:19:05] Take a breath. You can open your eyes if

[1:19:07] you want. It's so simple.

[1:19:09] So simple. That's meditation.

[1:19:12] At least

[1:19:13] I've not found

[1:19:15] any approach to meditation

[1:19:18] that is simpler or or more direct.

[1:19:23] Only to see

[1:19:25] what is actually here because what's

[1:19:28] really here must be the truth.

[1:19:32] And the whole point

[1:19:34] of the quest you found yourself on

[1:19:37] is to find the truth of you.

[1:19:40] Yeah?

[1:19:43] I hope that helps.

[1:19:46] Ah, hello Fatima.

[1:19:49] Great to see you again. No, there's no

[1:19:51] possible

[1:19:54] Loss isn't illusion I think you meant.

[1:19:57] Yeah, it is.

[1:19:59] Nothing can ever really be lost.

[1:20:08] Nothing

[1:20:10] ever had a beginning

[1:20:12] or an end.

[1:20:13] They're only

[1:20:16] the

[1:20:17] the infinite outpouring

[1:20:20] of that which has no beginning and no

[1:20:23] end, which is the self.

[1:20:25] Yourself.

[1:20:29] Papa

[1:20:31] Owl.

[1:20:32] How do I'm G and everyone? I probably

[1:20:34] don't notice it G, but in an informal

[1:20:37] setting like having a personal deep

[1:20:39] conversation with someone.

[1:20:44] How would you heal someone of the

[1:20:45] troubles

[1:20:47] they're dealing with without going into

[1:20:49] any specific technique like showing

[1:20:51] their nervous system that they're not at

[1:20:53] fault any longer by just having a normal

[1:20:56] conversation.

[1:21:06] I'm not going any specific technique.

[1:21:17] When you're

[1:21:19] in a position

[1:21:21] and you're having a a conversation with

[1:21:23] someone, maybe a deep conversation with

[1:21:25] somebody.

[1:21:28] First thing to notice is that just

[1:21:30] because of the work you've done on

[1:21:31] yourself, the place you've gotten to in

[1:21:33] your spiritual development.

[1:21:36] There's a deep a deep desire to

[1:21:39] alleviate suffering especially when

[1:21:42] you've come to see how it happens.

[1:21:44] And what the cause of suffering is

[1:21:46] and the way out of suffering.

[1:21:49] Once you've seen it and experienced

[1:21:51] tasted it for yourself knowing that it's

[1:21:53] real,

[1:21:54] you can't help but want

[1:21:57] to share it and you can't help but

[1:21:59] notice

[1:22:01] how

[1:22:04] those you care about, to those you

[1:22:07] that are

[1:22:09] are suffering

[1:22:12] and

[1:22:15] and don't know the way out of it.

[1:22:18] You see it.

[1:22:19] It's right there. And you you know what?

[1:22:21] You just do this and this.

[1:22:23] >> [snorts]

[1:22:23] >> I found

[1:22:25] personal experience that doesn't work

[1:22:28] to try to lead them somewhere

[1:22:31] like that.

[1:22:33] Because

[1:22:35] you might in some circumstance

[1:22:38] offer in the form of technique.

[1:22:42] You may find somebody who's already

[1:22:44] spiritually mature enough that you can

[1:22:47] do it together. Look let's look together

[1:22:48] at this. Let's see where its origin

[1:22:50] where did it come from.

[1:22:51] Others not so much, so you can use a a

[1:22:54] technique because that's familiar to

[1:22:57] them.

[1:22:59] Right? They can grasp a technique as a

[1:23:02] healing modality.

[1:23:05] Whereas they can't grasp

[1:23:09] self inquiry at all let alone as a

[1:23:11] healing modality.

[1:23:14] And sometimes

[1:23:16] can't do any of that.

[1:23:21] But whether you use a modality or even

[1:23:24] self inquiry

[1:23:28] the the only real healing agent is you.

[1:23:34] Your level

[1:23:36] your

[1:23:37] the point at which you have grown to,

[1:23:39] the things that you have seen

[1:23:41] the the parts of the

[1:23:44] of you that of the false you that have

[1:23:47] dissolved and been replaced with the

[1:23:49] reality of you.

[1:23:51] Make your presence.

[1:23:54] Your presence is the healer.

[1:23:57] And the more you're present

[1:23:59] and

[1:24:00] the the more powerful that energy is

[1:24:05] the more

[1:24:06] those are drawn to it and you have to do

[1:24:07] anything because the the energy of

[1:24:10] somebody who is suffering is simply

[1:24:12] looking for place

[1:24:14] where it's safe.

[1:24:16] And if you are that place

[1:24:20] the energy will find it even if the

[1:24:22] person thinks it's got to be an external

[1:24:24] environment. It's got to be some place

[1:24:25] where I am I can sit and hang out. It's

[1:24:28] a physical place of safety I'm going to

[1:24:30] get to.

[1:24:32] It's actually an inner state that is

[1:24:37] that is discovered

[1:24:39] and then and then abided in and then

[1:24:41] become.

[1:24:43] And the more you are that, the more the

[1:24:45] energy at the energetic level it's going

[1:24:48] to gravitate towards you and feel the

[1:24:50] safety. And they will feel the safety.

[1:24:54] Maybe not consciously, but enough that

[1:24:58] probably can't even articulate it, but

[1:25:00] without that feeling that safety no deep

[1:25:02] conversation could possibly happen.

[1:25:05] Could it?

[1:25:07] Because it would be it can't get deep.

[1:25:09] Can't get intimate because

[1:25:12] it's not safe enough. I can't reveal

[1:25:13] myself.

[1:25:14] The very fact that it's that

[1:25:17] that it can happen is an indication that

[1:25:19] there's already a space of safety.

[1:25:25] So that's

[1:25:27] really what heals.

[1:25:30] Remember Ramana

[1:25:32] for the most part

[1:25:35] didn't talk.

[1:25:39] In fact, he only talked 10 or 20% of the

[1:25:42] time. Most of the time he just sat there

[1:25:45] completely aware and he he would say

[1:25:49] that

[1:25:50] in the state he would

[1:25:52] inviting us to was one in which you're

[1:25:54] aware of all of it. You see it, the

[1:25:56] actions of the people and everything.

[1:25:58] Right?

[1:26:00] And you see it from here.

[1:26:03] Nothing to comment about.

[1:26:05] >> [clears throat]

[1:26:06] >> Nothing to intervene.

[1:26:08] Every now and then he'd say something.

[1:26:10] Every now and then he'd open it up and

[1:26:11] people could ask him a question.

[1:26:15] >> [cough and clears throat]

[1:26:15] >> Excuse me.

[1:26:20] The technique

[1:26:23] that someone uses

[1:26:25] is not the healer.

[1:26:28] >> [laughter]

[1:26:30] [snorts]

[1:26:32] >> You say, "Oh, it's EFT. Oh, it really

[1:26:34] works."

[1:26:36] And I'm depending on who I'm talking to,

[1:26:38] talk about how it works, but I'll talk

[1:26:39] about why it works and the like.

[1:26:42] But it isn't the technique that works.

[1:26:46] It is the It is the quality of the

[1:26:48] presence.

[1:26:50] And by presence I mean you're aware

[1:26:53] you're aware of what's going on, you're

[1:26:54] aware of yourself

[1:26:56] and you're not rejecting anything.

[1:26:59] You're not pushing anything away.

[1:27:01] Practicing the the this

[1:27:03] being able to allow your own feelings.

[1:27:08] Allow them to be there without

[1:27:10] immediately getting into some kind of a

[1:27:13] thing with them where you got to do

[1:27:14] something or other.

[1:27:16] >> [clears throat]

[1:27:17] >> To just allow them.

[1:27:20] Opens up this presence.

[1:27:22] You

[1:27:23] you know that

[1:27:24] oh the feelings themselves aren't the

[1:27:26] problem. It's all the ideas and thoughts

[1:27:29] we have about them that are the problem.

[1:27:31] >> [laughter]

[1:27:33] >> As you get that, you're more and more

[1:27:35] allowing of your own feelings, which

[1:27:37] means you're allowing of others.

[1:27:40] That's what happens.

[1:27:43] And

[1:27:44] since being being sensitive, you

[1:27:46] probably notice at some point feelings

[1:27:48] you're having and go, "Oh, that's not

[1:27:49] me. It's him."

[1:27:51] You'll feel what others are feeling. And

[1:27:54] and you'll

[1:27:55] do with it exactly what you've learned

[1:27:57] to do with your own and that's just let

[1:27:58] them be there.

[1:28:02] And that space of of of safety, that

[1:28:06] space of presence is just love, which is

[1:28:09] felt

[1:28:10] in

[1:28:12] in the space of of love. Nothing

[1:28:16] unlike love can stand. It just has to

[1:28:19] dissolve.

[1:28:23] Sometimes immediately and miraculously,

[1:28:25] sometimes just gradually, gently, not

[1:28:28] even noticeably.

[1:28:29] >> [laughter]

[1:28:32] >> You yourself have have experiences

[1:28:34] things kind of dissolving and

[1:28:37] you noticed it after the fact. Right?

[1:28:44] You don't need to

[1:28:46] jump right in and explain all these

[1:28:49] things to them.

[1:28:53] I know you want to.

[1:28:54] >> [laughter]

[1:28:56] >> We're burning up to help others.

[1:29:00] But

[1:29:01] let it take root. Let it take such deep

[1:29:04] roots in you that you don't even feel

[1:29:06] that need to help others. It just

[1:29:09] happens

[1:29:11] because

[1:29:15] because it's you.

[1:29:17] You have become it.

[1:29:21] Not even becoming, just I am I am that.

[1:29:24] I am that very love. I am that space.

[1:29:30] >> [snorts]

[1:29:31] >> And everybody's welcome here.

[1:29:33] You're also welcome to not come here.

[1:29:39] Totally open.

[1:29:43] Oh boy, how many have we got here?

[1:29:45] Oh jeez.

[1:29:50] Fortunately, folks having to go. I'm

[1:29:52] just kind of Oh, nay. Lovely, lovely,

[1:29:54] lovely. Good to see you. Just want to

[1:29:57] say hello to everyone.

[1:30:01] Well, just silence. Yeah, Mr. Satsang,

[1:30:04] great to see you again. Yes.

[1:30:06] Well, I keep inviting and many to the

[1:30:08] weekly Satsangs, you know.

[1:30:11] I have to give the bulk of my attention

[1:30:13] to to the students, those who are

[1:30:15] relying on me, too, huh?

[1:30:17] You know, yeah.

[1:30:18] To take them there.

[1:30:20] So,

[1:30:21] I should Oh god, I should say.

[1:30:24] >> [laughter]

[1:30:26] >> I'm actually doing

[1:30:28] uh an uh

[1:30:30] uh a live event next week. I won't be

[1:30:32] doing Satsang cuz I'm going to be

[1:30:33] teaching a class

[1:30:36] just for women. And uh

[1:30:39] been asked to to do that numerous times,

[1:30:41] and so I'm doing it next next Sunday.

[1:30:45] Unfortunately,

[1:30:46] I don't have

[1:30:50] uh

[1:30:51] the brilliant marketer that I am, I

[1:30:52] don't have a place where you can sign up

[1:30:54] yet. So, so tell you what. Um I'm going

[1:30:56] to put this Christina, if you don't

[1:30:58] mind.

[1:31:01] Stina

[1:31:03] at gpwalsh

[1:31:06] dot com. I think I spelled it right.

[1:31:08] Yeah, Christina, yes.

[1:31:11] Send an email to Christina, who is

[1:31:15] uh

[1:31:16] keeping me from

[1:31:17] com- falling apart at the seams.

[1:31:20] And

[1:31:21] we'll get you the the info about being

[1:31:23] part of it. I uh

[1:31:25] the sliding scale. Anybody can come. I'm

[1:31:28] asking for certain amount of money,

[1:31:31] right? But you don't have to pay that.

[1:31:32] In fact, if you don't have anything, you

[1:31:34] can come anyway. This will be completely

[1:31:36] uh donation-based with some suggestions

[1:31:39] of stuff that would really help me if I

[1:31:41] get that.

[1:31:42] And it's just the

[1:31:44] it is it's

[1:31:47] it's both emotional healing and inquiry,

[1:31:49] and we'll be just the unique challenges

[1:31:53] that that that women face, and the

[1:31:56] unique sense of of finding oneself. Uh

[1:32:01] Both both the reality of you

[1:32:03] and the functional you in the world uh

[1:32:07] as a woman.

[1:32:08] >> [clears throat]

[1:32:09] >> I've done them for men as well, and

[1:32:11] uh and I do find that it's very useful

[1:32:15] to have a setting in which it can be

[1:32:17] looked at just from that perspective.

[1:32:19] All right. Even though

[1:32:21] the soul has no gender. Uh the reality

[1:32:24] is

[1:32:25] is beyond that, but yet our experience

[1:32:29] brings out certain qualities and certain

[1:32:32] relationships with the culture and

[1:32:34] certain ways of self-identification

[1:32:37] that are very limiting and harmful.

[1:32:40] It's useful to look at them through the

[1:32:43] through the lens of gender. So, that's

[1:32:45] what I'm going to do. And uh

[1:32:47] Christina there will uh receive She's

[1:32:51] Oh, she's here. Hi. Hi, she is. Um

[1:32:54] Uh

[1:32:55] so,

[1:32:56] uh

[1:32:57] uh So, there it is.

[1:33:01] There it is. That's my form of uh being

[1:33:04] the great marketer and getting the word

[1:33:06] out. Oh jeez. Oh jeez.

[1:33:10] Who knows? I don't even post as many

[1:33:12] videos on YouTube.

[1:33:14] And

[1:33:15] and and

[1:33:18] It

[1:33:20] so much effort uh and

[1:33:23] uh

[1:33:24] with not a whole lot of payback, and

[1:33:26] you're completely at the mercy of

[1:33:28] YouTube, right?

[1:33:32] Completely.

[1:33:34] You know, I went to having, you know,

[1:33:35] around 100 people at my Satsangs

[1:33:38] regularly. And then one day it dropped

[1:33:40] down to 40.

[1:33:42] And then one day dropped down to about,

[1:33:44] you know, 20. 20 right now.

[1:33:47] What changed? Nothing.

[1:33:50] The algorithm changed

[1:33:53] for YouTube, which how they decide

[1:33:56] what they sug- sug- should suggest to

[1:33:59] people.

[1:34:04] And

[1:34:05] the algorithm

[1:34:07] just kind of like,

[1:34:09] Yeah, we're going to suggest them that

[1:34:11] much. So, I

[1:34:13] I just rely on

[1:34:15] word of mouth.

[1:34:16] You know, if you like this,

[1:34:19] tell a friend.

[1:34:21] So, in the meantime, if you want to if

[1:34:24] you are

[1:34:26] uh a lady and would like to uh explore

[1:34:29] some of this with some other very

[1:34:31] wonderful wonderful uh and uh

[1:34:34] sincere and

[1:34:36] >> [clears throat]

[1:34:36] >> supportive ladies,

[1:34:39] join us.

[1:34:41] Victoria, not sure if it was sadness.

[1:34:44] Oh, good.

[1:34:46] It is this feeling of me being here and

[1:34:48] my circumstances being totally random

[1:34:52] and not as a result of some divine

[1:34:54] wisdom. I came from nothing and and

[1:34:56] going to nothing.

[1:34:58] Uh

[1:35:01] Well,

[1:35:02] yeah, it's

[1:35:03] it's not so Feel more into it without

[1:35:06] any thoughts whatsoever.

[1:35:08] Just feeling I'm here. Yeah.

[1:35:11] Circumstances

[1:35:13] I don't see the order any order in them,

[1:35:16] although I can see order in them. I

[1:35:17] mean, it's not totally chaotic. It's

[1:35:19] not, you know,

[1:35:21] suddenly my head becomes a pumpkin.

[1:35:24] Right? I mean, it's like there is some

[1:35:25] continuity to it all.

[1:35:30] Random seeming as if

[1:35:34] Look Look more closely at the feeling.

[1:35:37] All right.

[1:35:39] Let's

[1:35:40] Okay, it's

[1:35:41] random. Is that really accurate?

[1:35:47] I'm not seeing divine wisdom in them in

[1:35:49] them. Okay.

[1:35:52] And

[1:35:55] Now, is that because it isn't there or

[1:35:56] is because

[1:35:58] I have a an idea of what that divine

[1:36:00] wisdom should be? Shouldn't the divine

[1:36:02] wisdom look a whole lot more like what I

[1:36:04] want?

[1:36:05] No, really.

[1:36:07] This isn't a criticism. It's just to to

[1:36:10] to really look through through eyes that

[1:36:13] are clean.

[1:36:14] All right. I'm not [clears throat]

[1:36:15] trying to read anything into it. All

[1:36:17] right. I don't see the order in it. I

[1:36:19] don't see the wisdom.

[1:36:21] And it's not making any sense to me.

[1:36:24] All right.

[1:36:25] Okay. So,

[1:36:27] maybe though, it does make sense, but

[1:36:31] I'm not looking at it from that

[1:36:32] perspective.

[1:36:34] It's possible, right? I'm not saying

[1:36:36] it's absolutely true. I'm just saying

[1:36:37] it's possible.

[1:36:40] Now, I came from nothing

[1:36:42] and going to nothing.

[1:36:47] It's more like emptiness and what's the

[1:36:50] point? Like an atheist point of view,

[1:36:52] which is normally not natural to me.

[1:36:56] There's no specialness or destiny to

[1:36:58] accomplish.

[1:36:59] Just nature doing its job and our little

[1:37:02] minds trying to trying to to grasp any

[1:37:06] any sense of meaning.

[1:37:09] Good.

[1:37:11] Good.

[1:37:12] Good.

[1:37:14] I say good because I I really want you

[1:37:16] to look at this very This is really deep

[1:37:19] and really fundamental and existential.

[1:37:23] Yes, the materialistic view is nothing.

[1:37:29] Consciousness, nothing.

[1:37:32] Oblivion. Total nonexistence.

[1:37:39] And

[1:37:40] for most,

[1:37:41] that that's terrifying.

[1:37:46] And it's a nihilistic

[1:37:49] the consequence of that of that view of

[1:37:52] things is

[1:37:54] nothing has any meaning.

[1:37:57] Nothing matters.

[1:38:02] I'm just going to I am

[1:38:05] everything's going to dust. It's true.

[1:38:09] From that perspective, it's true.

[1:38:12] How long 5 more billion years this our

[1:38:14] sun has, in which case, the earth's

[1:38:16] gone. Everything gone.

[1:38:23] I'll be

[1:38:25] My kids won't remember me when I'm gone.

[1:38:27] My grandkids will.

[1:38:31] After that, there'll be no memory of me,

[1:38:32] except what's passed on. Oh, yeah, they

[1:38:34] were like this, like this, and then

[1:38:37] generation or two later, I don't exist

[1:38:39] anymore. Nothing.

[1:38:42] Total oblivion.

[1:38:46] Now, we can look at that.

[1:38:50] And in a sense, it's true. This, you

[1:38:53] know,

[1:38:54] even if you if you buy the idea of

[1:38:57] multiple lives,

[1:38:58] reincarnation and the like,

[1:39:03] your past life and everyone prior to

[1:39:05] that, gone. Poof.

[1:39:07] >> [gasps]

[1:39:08] [sighs]

[1:39:09] >> Like a dream, gone.

[1:39:14] So, [snorts] if there is meaning to be

[1:39:18] found,

[1:39:19] it's not there.

[1:39:20] >> [clears throat]

[1:39:23] >> And it's And it's significant less.

[1:39:26] Really, is that all there is?

[1:39:29] Then,

[1:39:31] where did the

[1:39:33] this desire to find meaning even come

[1:39:36] from?

[1:39:37] It's weird because if that's the case,

[1:39:40] the

[1:39:43] why would there be within us this this

[1:39:46] urge towards

[1:39:48] meaning,

[1:39:50] significance,

[1:39:52] value?

[1:39:53] Um

[1:39:54] there's plenty of ways to explain it

[1:39:56] away.

[1:39:58] But it does seem kind of strange that in

[1:40:01] the the a universe the whole function

[1:40:05] that is from that perspective completely

[1:40:07] void of any of that, that this urge

[1:40:11] towards it would emerge.

[1:40:13] It makes no sense.

[1:40:16] You know,

[1:40:17] it's like a frog giving birth to a cat.

[1:40:20] It doesn't make any sense.

[1:40:22] It's like It's like

[1:40:24] It How does it come out of that?

[1:40:29] Unless there's some seed in there.

[1:40:35] So, [snorts] meaning,

[1:40:38] value, significance.

[1:40:42] If we look at it from that perspective,

[1:40:44] which is the perspective the world

[1:40:46] operates under, what's your value?

[1:40:48] What's your market value? You inherently

[1:40:51] have no value.

[1:40:52] It's only with the skills you've learned

[1:40:54] or the connections you got or everything

[1:40:56] is looked at transactionally, right?

[1:41:00] Mhm.

[1:41:01] The

[1:41:02] Mhm. Nobody asks you, well, yeah, you

[1:41:05] that's great you can do that, but who

[1:41:06] are you? Nobody asked that. Who are you?

[1:41:11] Where do I find inherent value?

[1:41:16] The culture or economics? You don't have

[1:41:18] any.

[1:41:20] You don't have inherent value. You You

[1:41:22] have whatever value

[1:41:25] with your skills and abilities and stuff

[1:41:28] you can do that you can offer

[1:41:30] in the marketplace. Your value is

[1:41:32] totally relative.

[1:41:35] You know,

[1:41:36] you know, some

[1:41:37] one point, you know,

[1:41:40] all the guidance counselors in high

[1:41:42] school were trying to, you know,

[1:41:44] to take the kids and say, oh, you

[1:41:45] should, you know, go and be a lawyer,

[1:41:47] right?

[1:41:48] Now, there's such a glut of lawyers

[1:41:50] that, you know,

[1:41:51] >> [laughter]

[1:41:52] >> they're not making the great bucks

[1:41:53] anymore in the

[1:41:54] You know, it used to be that uh

[1:41:56] a kid graduating with his That was

[1:41:59] computer science, right? Get computer

[1:42:00] science degree and then everybody kids

[1:42:02] in computer science and

[1:42:04] and, you know,

[1:42:05] just graduate from computer science with

[1:42:07] decent grades and you got a $100,000 a

[1:42:09] year

[1:42:10] job, right? And then the dot bomb

[1:42:13] happens.

[1:42:15] >> [laughter]

[1:42:16] >> Everything just the whole industry

[1:42:17] collapses and all of a sudden you've got

[1:42:19] all these people with this degree and

[1:42:21] they're living in their parents'

[1:42:23] basement, you know, just trying to find

[1:42:25] jobs on

[1:42:27] you know, Fiverr or something, right?

[1:42:31] That value is just relative.

[1:42:35] And just like everything has to have

[1:42:37] cause and effect,

[1:42:39] right? Cause and effect, cause and

[1:42:40] effect. There's got to be something that

[1:42:42] isn't a cause, that doesn't have a

[1:42:45] cause,

[1:42:46] right? That just is.

[1:42:48] Inherent what it is.

[1:42:52] So, what's the point?

[1:42:54] If you can see the utter meaninglessness

[1:42:56] of this,

[1:42:58] cuz it is from that perspective,

[1:43:00] there isn't any meaning in it.

[1:43:05] The only thing we can find there is

[1:43:07] like, okay, I suppose it's

[1:43:10] You see?

[1:43:12] There's no concrete [clears throat]

[1:43:14] foundation for any morality.

[1:43:19] And

[1:43:20] And so someone would say, you know, I

[1:43:21] think it's probably better if we help

[1:43:23] each other and get along

[1:43:25] and not kill each other.

[1:43:27] Where did that come from?

[1:43:29] There's nothing in There's nothing in

[1:43:31] this that would give that. But yet,

[1:43:34] don't you have a sense of Yeah, that's

[1:43:36] right.

[1:43:37] It It's just

[1:43:39] It's not coming from anywhere. It's not

[1:43:41] a philosophy. It's not relative even.

[1:43:45] It isn't referencing something else.

[1:43:46] It's just I don't know. It's

[1:43:49] It's true.

[1:43:50] Self-referenced.

[1:43:54] You're looking for [snorts]

[1:43:57] your

[1:43:59] meaning, which really means you're

[1:44:00] looking for you.

[1:44:02] You're looking for a you

[1:44:05] that is not just at the whims of this

[1:44:08] and that, but has an actual concrete

[1:44:12] reality to it.

[1:44:14] I am this.

[1:44:16] And that's why

[1:44:18] I feel this way. I am this. That's why I

[1:44:20] know I'm valuable.

[1:44:22] Cuz of what I am.

[1:44:24] Not because of skills I learned

[1:44:27] that tomorrow you don't want them

[1:44:29] anymore.

[1:44:31] And so

[1:44:31] I I'm out on the street or something.

[1:44:34] Are you following this?

[1:44:40] You started with nothing. You started in

[1:44:43] as nothing and were as nothing. You

[1:44:45] started as emptiness.

[1:44:47] Right?

[1:44:48] Not as a form.

[1:44:51] Take form and you and you'll lose your

[1:44:53] form. Aren't Are you still there? That's

[1:44:56] the question to probe.

[1:44:58] What's here

[1:45:00] that isn't constantly changing, that

[1:45:04] isn't relative?

[1:45:06] That's what this search is for, the you

[1:45:08] that is not relative. It is not in

[1:45:11] reference to something else. It is

[1:45:13] concrete.

[1:45:15] Find that, you find your meaning.

[1:45:19] Cuz otherwise even meaning is just What

[1:45:21] does it mean to you? Well, right now it

[1:45:23] means that because it's important, but

[1:45:24] then I don't want that anymore and so it

[1:45:26] doesn't mean that anymore. You see,

[1:45:28] that's all. That's all relative, too.

[1:45:31] We're looking for that which is.

[1:45:34] In other words, you.

[1:45:40] Christina said, oh, nothingness is

[1:45:43] not as a concept of empty, zero,

[1:45:46] sterile. Somethingness full of you and

[1:45:49] nothing but you. Not as body, not as

[1:45:51] form, not as mind,

[1:45:53] but as being.

[1:45:55] You are.

[1:45:56] That is the point. You are the point.

[1:46:00] Well said.

[1:46:01] You are the meaning.

[1:46:06] We think there's an absolute meaning

[1:46:08] that comes out from outside of

[1:46:09] ourselves. But even as human beings,

[1:46:11] right?

[1:46:13] I give this meaning.

[1:46:17] I see other people doing videos and like

[1:46:19] and they're just kind of like sitting

[1:46:21] around and

[1:46:22] you know, I'm just like, no, I I

[1:46:25] play with the lights and the

[1:46:28] >> [laughter]

[1:46:28] >> the sound and everything ridiculously. I

[1:46:31] don't need to.

[1:46:33] But that has meaning to me.

[1:46:34] I want to. So, it's meaningful to me. Do

[1:46:38] I need anything more than that?

[1:46:41] And the meaning, of course, that is

[1:46:44] meaning being how important is it, it

[1:46:46] shifts [snorts] with me.

[1:46:49] Shift how I'm doing things, what I'm

[1:46:51] interested in that and

[1:46:53] at that point. So, meaning isn't a

[1:46:55] constant.

[1:46:56] But you are.

[1:46:59] Cuz no matter how you see yourself, what

[1:47:01] has meaning, what then doesn't have

[1:47:02] meaning, all these things that are

[1:47:03] changing,

[1:47:05] can you find in all of that that which

[1:47:08] isn't changing? You are there

[1:47:12] experiencing all the change.

[1:47:16] You are the changeless center at the

[1:47:18] center of the universe.

[1:47:23] And the meaning,

[1:47:27] purpose. You don't have a purpose.

[1:47:31] Purpose is something that you serve.

[1:47:35] You simply are.

[1:47:38] There's no purpose to being.

[1:47:40] Cuz it had no beginning. There was

[1:47:41] nothing there that said, I think this

[1:47:43] should happen and then made it happen.

[1:47:45] There's no

[1:47:46] nothing like that.

[1:47:48] You are. You are what is.

[1:47:52] You need to exist for any reason.

[1:47:56] You exist.

[1:47:58] It's the ground of being.

[1:48:01] And it's you.

[1:48:12] And very useful.

[1:48:14] Yes, very helpful. Thanks. No pictures

[1:48:16] before either.

[1:48:19] I think it's a huge job to release the

[1:48:21] blocks in my life.

[1:48:23] I lost my job and I felt so scared. Some

[1:48:25] story repeated itself.

[1:48:28] Um

[1:48:31] >> [sighs]

[1:48:31] >> No, it's not.

[1:48:33] >> [laughter]

[1:48:35] >> It seems that way because we we don't

[1:48:38] understand the under [clears throat] the

[1:48:40] stuff underneath. It's not visible.

[1:48:44] That creates the blocks, sustains the

[1:48:46] blocks,

[1:48:48] and then

[1:48:50] gets frustrated because it can't remove

[1:48:52] the block. Of course, it can't remove

[1:48:54] the block. It doesn't know what the

[1:48:55] actual cause is.

[1:48:57] All I do all day every day is remove

[1:49:00] blocks for people because

[1:49:02] they don't really exist as a fact. They

[1:49:05] exist as a state.

[1:49:08] And every state is sustained only as

[1:49:12] long as you believe it.

[1:49:15] And

[1:49:16] and the the

[1:49:18] the underlying belief

[1:49:22] is the sense of identity.

[1:49:26] Because the belief

[1:49:29] uh

[1:49:30] not only is the belief just a belief,

[1:49:33] the believer is also just a belief.

[1:49:40] Ocean how am I able to do the releasing,

[1:49:43] but sometimes I lose hope. But then

[1:49:45] again, I get up and somehow I manage to

[1:49:47] trust that it's my way out of these

[1:49:49] repetitive experiences.

[1:49:51] Yes, how do I trust life?

[1:49:54] Uh

[1:49:59] Let me invite you to my classes.

[1:50:01] >> [laughter]

[1:50:05] >> Uh

[1:50:05] it's what I do.

[1:50:08] Not just through non-dual self-inquiry.

[1:50:11] It gets to there, but the kind of things

[1:50:13] you're experiencing require some

[1:50:16] em- emotional preparation, emotional

[1:50:18] healing, all right, to get a handle on

[1:50:21] it and

[1:50:22] and uh you'll find it's actually not all

[1:50:25] that hard. It's different.

[1:50:28] It brings about some really

[1:50:30] s-

[1:50:31] some serious changes and

[1:50:33] transformations.

[1:50:35] But it isn't that hard.

[1:50:38] There's several people here who can

[1:50:39] testify to that.

[1:50:41] Yeah.

[1:50:43] So,

[1:50:44] use that same

[1:50:45] email address. Want you to throw your

[1:50:47] email address in there again, Christina,

[1:50:50] to to reach out. And we can talk about

[1:50:53] it and I can show you what we can do.

[1:50:55] All right.

[1:50:56] And uh I don't charge a lot. In fact,

[1:50:58] fact for a lot of folks who can't afford

[1:51:00] it, I

[1:51:01] I I charge even less.

[1:51:04] >> [laughter]

[1:51:06] >> So far, the money's been adequate to

[1:51:09] keep me in my little room here.

[1:51:11] Uh so I don't have to try to make any

[1:51:14] more than that, but

[1:51:15] uh

[1:51:16] yeah.

[1:51:17] >> [clears throat]

[1:51:18] >> We're here to heal.

[1:51:20] We're we're here to heal our our our

[1:51:23] wounds.

[1:51:24] Uh

[1:51:26] For the purpose of being able to to

[1:51:30] genuinely

[1:51:33] uh

[1:51:33] totally

[1:51:36] and deeply do this self-inquiry

[1:51:42] without any overhead of it being like

[1:51:44] therapeutic and what I've got to get out

[1:51:45] of it and that sort of thing.

[1:51:47] You don't need to get anything out of

[1:51:49] it.

[1:51:50] We do have to get stuff. We do have to

[1:51:52] get some kind of emotional stability and

[1:51:54] freedom from the wounds and toxic stuff

[1:51:57] that we've all been through.

[1:52:00] All right.

[1:52:03] But we don't have that clouding up the

[1:52:06] inquiry,

[1:52:09] which is done

[1:52:11] to find out who you really are.

[1:52:15] Yeah,

[1:52:16] so

[1:52:17] even I I I can just see even the

[1:52:19] release. You've tried various kinds of

[1:52:21] things.

[1:52:22] So,

[1:52:24] really reach out to Christina.

[1:52:27] >> [laughter]

[1:52:27] >> So, all I can do is offer.

[1:52:29] All right.

[1:52:30] And then because these things require

[1:52:33] uh

[1:52:34] uh

[1:52:35] they require our guidance, help,

[1:52:36] support, others,

[1:52:39] understanding.

[1:52:41] Uh

[1:52:42] The deep cleaning, the deep healing

[1:52:46] is a transformation. It's not a

[1:52:48] therapeutic. It's not something you do.

[1:52:50] It

[1:52:51] i- i- it's

[1:52:53] something fundamentally has to transform

[1:52:55] in us so that

[1:52:57] that the influence of all the effects of

[1:53:00] the past are gone.

[1:53:03] The wounds have have healed up.

[1:53:08] Uh

[1:53:08] You're not broken.

[1:53:10] Yeah.

[1:53:12] You don't nothing has to be fixed.

[1:53:15] Uh but we have to come to see that.

[1:53:17] Uh

[1:53:18] That's where the freedom is.

[1:53:22] Uh

[1:53:24] Uh

[1:53:26] Uh

[1:53:28] Uh

[1:53:30] Okay.

[1:53:31] May-

[1:53:32] Yes, I am. Thank you. Much better.

[1:53:36] Jill,

[1:53:37] I've found the core of my separate self.

[1:53:40] That there's a hypercritical fear-based

[1:53:42] character. I'm seeing it from a clearer

[1:53:45] place now.

[1:53:47] But could you address the origins of

[1:53:49] that?

[1:53:52] And says, I think there's a reason I

[1:53:53] jumped into

[1:53:56] YouTube in this exact moment.

[1:53:58] Yeah, there was.

[1:53:59] Uh

[1:54:00] You need to hear that you're not broken.

[1:54:04] That you are

[1:54:06] You already are the perfect, innocent,

[1:54:09] beautiful, immaculate one.

[1:54:13] But there's these beliefs that are

[1:54:14] there, which is what Jill actually just

[1:54:16] asked about. Where did this one come

[1:54:19] from? All right.

[1:54:26] Well, first, let me take a sip.

[1:54:30] >> [laughter]

[1:54:31] >> Look at this. Nice lasted 2 hours

[1:54:33] something.

[1:54:43] Um

[1:54:45] >> [sighs]

[1:54:46] >> First off,

[1:54:50] in the meditation,

[1:54:53] as Ramana put it, don't

[1:54:56] he says

[1:55:01] direct your meditation

[1:55:04] not on

[1:55:06] the seeing,

[1:55:08] which is obviously the witness, right?

[1:55:11] And not on what is seen,

[1:55:15] but unmovingly

[1:55:17] on that which sees.

[1:55:29] Okay.

[1:55:30] Uh

[1:55:31] This is not the same answer I would give

[1:55:32] everybody, but for you, since I know you

[1:55:35] and have for a while,

[1:55:39] let's say

[1:55:41] you're having a really bad

[1:55:44] dream. You're chased by monsters or

[1:55:46] something like that, right?

[1:55:54] And you start to wake up.

[1:55:57] Do you really give a where the

[1:55:59] monsters came from?

[1:56:02] >> [laughter]

[1:56:07] >> Does it matter?

[1:56:10] Where did they come from? Nowhere.

[1:56:13] They arose.

[1:56:18] You were there before they arose. You

[1:56:20] watched them dance and you're still

[1:56:22] here.

[1:56:24] Now, I know what you re- I want to know

[1:56:25] there and I won't ignore that, but we'll

[1:56:27] take that up

[1:56:29] at one of the uh

[1:56:31] at one of the sangha meetings. Yeah.

[1:56:35] Right now, just notice that I don't need

[1:56:38] to know

[1:56:40] the source of a dream

[1:56:43] as if it had some specialness to it.

[1:56:45] What was the source?

[1:56:47] In the dream, me. It just arose out of

[1:56:49] me and fell back into me.

[1:56:52] Me being that which is com- completely

[1:56:56] unbounded, limitless, beyond all

[1:56:58] opposites. So,

[1:57:00] it doesn't matter what arises.

[1:57:03] >> [laughter]

[1:57:07] >> So,

[1:57:07] I'm I'm not going to explain it to you

[1:57:09] in

[1:57:10] this point in in terms of emotional

[1:57:12] healing, but in terms of that of the

[1:57:15] of the inquiry.

[1:57:17] Whatever arises doesn't exist.

[1:57:21] Period.

[1:57:22] It's just a movement in consciousness.

[1:57:25] It arose out of consciousness.

[1:57:28] Disappears back into consciousness.

[1:57:33] Keep your attention on that which sees.

[1:57:36] Even the question of what is that? Where

[1:57:39] is coming from?

[1:57:41] Just arose.

[1:57:47] For some, I wouldn't say that because it

[1:57:49] might be oh, it's just an illusion, make

[1:57:51] it go away, but you're not there

[1:57:53] anymore.

[1:57:54] You can now see that it is just an

[1:57:56] appearance, a movement in consciousness

[1:58:00] that has no reality.

[1:58:03] It has no origin.

[1:58:05] It didn't come from anywhere.

[1:58:09] It has no history,

[1:58:12] no cause.

[1:58:16] The actions that happen in a dream,

[1:58:20] we can imagine that

[1:58:22] some event took place in the dream

[1:58:23] because of something prior in in that

[1:58:26] dream, but that's not why it happened.

[1:58:29] It's why in dreams are so interesting

[1:58:31] because

[1:58:32] the normal the normal consistency,

[1:58:35] continuity of cause and effect is gone.

[1:58:38] All of a sudden, you can find yourself

[1:58:40] in a completely different world like

[1:58:42] that.

[1:58:43] No connection. No reason. Not caused.

[1:58:45] Just boom, shift.

[1:58:48] It gives us an insight that while it

[1:58:51] does look in our waking state like

[1:58:53] there's this consistency moving along,

[1:58:56] all right, there isn't.

[1:58:58] It's just that's the illusion of time.

[1:59:02] Time is just an idea projected on a

[1:59:05] series of events.

[1:59:08] They have some continuity. Seems as if

[1:59:10] they're real. They're, you know, causing

[1:59:13] this caused that caused that. No, it

[1:59:15] didn't.

[1:59:18] What caused it?

[1:59:22] It just arose in consciousness. Not a

[1:59:24] cause, not an intention, not an act of

[1:59:26] will.

[1:59:27] It just arose.

[1:59:30] Leave it at that.

[1:59:32] The deeper understanding of that

[1:59:35] comes by putting attention on that which

[1:59:38] sees because that which sees

[1:59:41] is the answer and the source of all

[1:59:44] knowledge.

[1:59:48] It doesn't even have to find out

[1:59:51] anything.

[1:59:52] It just knows.

[1:59:57] Notice that there is

[1:59:58] a sense of a person

[2:00:02] there

[2:00:04] that is seeing.

[2:00:06] I've I have found at the core of my

[2:00:08] separate self.

[2:00:10] Yes.

[2:00:12] My separate self. Who's the I

[2:00:16] and the my of the separate self? What

[2:00:18] sees the separate self as a separate

[2:00:21] self?

[2:00:25] Think that might be a bit more important

[2:00:27] than the sep- than actually the separate

[2:00:29] self or even the seeing of the separate

[2:00:32] self.

[2:00:34] That I

[2:00:36] you may find that there's just this

[2:00:38] little bitty guy said

[2:00:43] still kind of making a point for a

[2:00:45] separate self, huh?

[2:00:47] >> [clears throat]

[2:00:48] >> The core of the separate self is

[2:00:51] nothing.

[2:00:55] It's empty.

[2:00:57] Just an appearance.

[2:01:04] >> [snorts]

[2:01:07] >> Elena David, the realization is that the

[2:01:10] I cannot surrender because it never was.

[2:01:14] Even describe its disappearance as the

[2:01:16] last remnants of ice melting in water is

[2:01:19] is too much.

[2:01:20] Yeah, it is.

[2:01:22] No words, no fireworks, no great event.

[2:01:26] Yeah.

[2:01:30] The dissolution of a dream is

[2:01:34] and the dreamer.

[2:01:37] The I that surrenders will be witnessed.

[2:01:40] The I disappearing will be witnessed

[2:01:43] by

[2:01:44] the I.

[2:01:45] The real, the only I.

[2:01:48] Just silence.

[2:01:50] Yeah.

[2:01:52] Just

[2:01:54] silence

[2:01:57] and love.

[2:02:00] >> [laughter]

[2:02:01] >> Fatimah, gee, I missed your satsangs.

[2:02:03] Great to see you again. And you, my

[2:02:05] dear.

[2:02:09] May I find love? Ah, [sighs and gasps]

[2:02:12] me, too.

[2:02:14] Gee, can't stay long.

[2:02:16] Have to catch replays.

[2:02:19] Thanks in advance if you if there's no

[2:02:21] response. Would love to hear you talk

[2:02:24] take on authority. Notice continuous

[2:02:26] patterns of consulting the mind. Yeah.

[2:02:29] Everybody does it.

[2:02:31] Oh, is this true?

[2:02:35] It's just a matter of time

[2:02:38] before we begin to find that we are the

[2:02:42] reference point that says this is true.

[2:02:48] Yeah. I [clears throat] I I did it. I

[2:02:51] Okay. I have the insight. And then I

[2:02:53] like ah

[2:02:55] I'd be like how do I Yeah. I'd be trying

[2:02:57] to like make sense out of it.

[2:03:00] Instead of just accepting it. Don't give

[2:03:02] it to your mind. Just give it to your

[2:03:04] heart. Is it true? Our heart says yes.

[2:03:06] Therefore, it's true.

[2:03:07] The mind will always doubt. It is the

[2:03:09] It's the home of doubt.

[2:03:13] Because the mind

[2:03:14] cannot know the truth.

[2:03:18] It only has reference points. That's it.

[2:03:21] It can't know anything.

[2:03:26] It's just They're just comparisons and

[2:03:29] relative, you know, weights and values

[2:03:31] and things like that. It doesn't know.

[2:03:36] And so

[2:03:37] the coming to see that I don't have to

[2:03:40] get my mind's confirmation.

[2:03:45] I don't even want it.

[2:03:47] My heart tells me I know love is better

[2:03:50] than

[2:03:51] than than indifference.

[2:03:55] Than than

[2:03:57] than coercion.

[2:04:01] How do I know? I just know.

[2:04:04] Can I prove it?

[2:04:05] No.

[2:04:08] I don't care about proving it. It's

[2:04:09] true.

[2:04:12] I can't say

[2:04:13] Try it. See if it works.

[2:04:14] See if you can run a world on love.

[2:04:17] I'll bet you can.

[2:04:20] Not egoic, self-centered, narcissistic

[2:04:24] love, but a love that is

[2:04:27] that includes everyone.

[2:04:29] That'll work.

[2:04:31] >> [snorts]

[2:04:32] [clears throat]

[2:04:32] >> Yeah, thank you, G, for all your

[2:04:33] answers. Great answers

[2:04:35] to my comments. You have always been my

[2:04:37] great master.

[2:04:39] Yeah, thank you.

[2:04:42] I hate being told what to do.

[2:04:45] >> [laughter and gasps]

[2:04:45] >> Good. Yeah.

[2:04:47] That's why you've stayed with me as long

[2:04:49] as you have cuz I don't tell anybody

[2:04:50] what to do. Rarely. Every now and then

[2:04:52] I'll say, "You know what?

[2:04:54] Stop.

[2:04:57] Stop beating your head in the wall

[2:04:59] against the wall because it feels good

[2:05:01] when you stop."

[2:05:04] >> [laughter]

[2:05:08] >> I'm desired not to be affected by what's

[2:05:10] said, no matter how positive or

[2:05:13] cruel.

[2:05:15] Yeah. You can't

[2:05:17] become immune to the thoughts and

[2:05:19] actions and sayings of others as a

[2:05:21] person. You The ego cannot ever be free

[2:05:26] of needing external confirmation.

[2:05:30] It can't.

[2:05:32] The only way to get there

[2:05:34] is to find you because once you know you

[2:05:38] as you are, no matter what,

[2:05:41] it it's

[2:05:43] it's invulnerable. It's unmovable. It

[2:05:45] doesn't matter what anybody says. This

[2:05:47] is what I am.

[2:05:48] What you think I am is not me.

[2:05:56] >> [clears throat]

[2:05:58] [snorts and gasps]

[2:05:59] >> Dias Beatrice, thank you so much for

[2:06:02] saying everybody's got to go. Okay. Me,

[2:06:04] too, actually.

[2:06:05] >> [laughter]

[2:06:06] >> All right. I don't have to, but

[2:06:08] Yeah, I

[2:06:09] Yeah, I think we've pretty much covered

[2:06:11] it up.

[2:06:13] Uh yes, it's love that heals. I am that

[2:06:16] love. I see that now. Thank you so so so

[2:06:19] much. Very enlightening.

[2:06:23] Bella

[2:06:26] Bella Arab stories. Bella Arab stories.

[2:06:30] Um it's Barb.

[2:06:32] >> [laughter]

[2:06:32] >> I keep changing

[2:06:35] >> [clears throat]

[2:06:37] [snorts]

[2:06:38] >> My name, of course. Identity

[2:06:40] keeps changing, so you know. Yeah. You

[2:06:43] can be whoever you want. You can just

[2:06:44] make it all up

[2:06:46] and just always be you.

[2:06:49] I actually want to ask something about

[2:06:50] the female archetype. This might be

[2:06:52] along the theme of your workshop.

[2:06:56] Lots of female archetypes. Yeah.

[2:06:59] Uh let's see. Want to ask something

[2:07:02] about the Let's see. She keeps It's

[2:07:03] basically I feel so good when I see the

[2:07:05] female archetype in myself. Like proud

[2:07:08] and worthy. And then I realize, wait, is

[2:07:10] this just another of

[2:07:11] what I am not?

[2:07:13] Reluctant.

[2:07:15] Reluctant to let it go.

[2:07:18] No.

[2:07:20] It is not

[2:07:21] what you are,

[2:07:24] but it is the attributes of you.

[2:07:27] Archetypes are represent representations

[2:07:31] of

[2:07:33] us.

[2:07:35] They are the qualities that are us

[2:07:38] projected outwards in an ideal form.

[2:07:43] But they arise here.

[2:07:44] Here,

[2:07:46] they're not really a form, right? You're

[2:07:48] not Athena or

[2:07:49] >> [laughter]

[2:07:51] >> Right?

[2:07:53] >> [clears throat]

[2:07:53] >> But yet you are.

[2:07:57] Because they represent these essential

[2:08:00] qualities.

[2:08:04] And so but but the the step beyond that

[2:08:08] is not that I'm not that. It is

[2:08:12] that is an attribute of me.

[2:08:17] But that me

[2:08:19] is beyond all the attributes.

[2:08:23] My character is not myself. It is just

[2:08:27] It is just the visible part of me.

[2:08:30] >> [clears throat]

[2:08:31] >> It is an attribute of me. That me

[2:08:35] can't be seen.

[2:08:37] And yet

[2:08:39] we see all the attributes of it.

[2:08:42] So, you are that.

[2:08:45] That is all of those describe you. Like

[2:08:48] the image in a mirror.

[2:08:50] Right? It is you, but it's not the

[2:08:52] original.

[2:08:54] You are where the where the archetype

[2:08:57] came from.

[2:09:00] You are what makes it have

[2:09:03] value and reality.

[2:09:07] Not the other way around.

[2:09:11] And I just figured out that I can start

[2:09:13] trust life when I see I only need to

[2:09:15] trust in myself.

[2:09:17] The way is to find out that I am life

[2:09:20] itself.

[2:09:22] Yes, we already know that. Now,

[2:09:25] the

[2:09:27] the sudden of the practice

[2:09:30] is letting that become

[2:09:33] letting that go from being an insight to

[2:09:35] being your lived reality.

[2:09:38] It could take time.

[2:09:39] With patience. Not a lot of time, but

[2:09:43] it it it's got to not just be

[2:09:46] I can, but I I am and that I am

[2:09:50] love, as you said before. I

[2:09:53] I am life.

[2:09:54] Right?

[2:09:56] Notice there's

[2:09:57] some doubt, some resistance, but

[2:09:59] it's okay.

[2:10:00] Which is fine. Right?

[2:10:03] That's where we

[2:10:05] all of that resistance and stuff, we

[2:10:08] bring the light of our insight to that

[2:10:10] through love. And then

[2:10:13] it's more than an insight.

[2:10:15] It is my reality. It is me.

[2:10:19] But that's that announcement, it is me,

[2:10:23] is not coming from a sense of of a

[2:10:27] person. It is reality announcing itself.

[2:10:34] So,

[2:10:37] >> [sighs]

[2:10:37] >> share your referral link.

[2:10:40] What's that?

[2:10:43] Huh.

[2:10:44] Look at that. Oh, no, it's not referring

[2:10:46] to me. It's It's a little thing down

[2:10:48] here on my screen. Share your referral,

[2:10:49] please.

[2:10:50] Me trying to get everybody to use this

[2:10:53] particular platform.

[2:10:54] So.

[2:10:57] On that note,

[2:10:59] once again, I will invite everybody to

[2:11:01] all of my classes, emotional healing,

[2:11:04] this self-inquiry sangha, and uh

[2:11:07] next weekend, yeah,

[2:11:09] a class just for women.

[2:11:14] Which was last time I did it, it went on

[2:11:15] for 5 [laughter]

[2:11:21] but was deeply meaningful to everyone

[2:11:23] who was who was there.

[2:11:25] It was uh

[2:11:26] it was sweet.

[2:11:29] And and empowering, which is an

[2:11:32] important one. Yeah.

[2:11:37] So.

[2:11:38] Anyway,

[2:11:40] if Christine, if you're there, just put

[2:11:41] your email in there one more time.

[2:11:44] And if you're not there, well,

[2:11:48] it's enough anyway.

[2:12:00] I might just take a moment to see if

[2:12:02] there's anything else that wants to be

[2:12:03] said.

[2:12:08] I guess not. Thank you all.

[2:12:12] Thank you all and I'll uh

[2:12:15] I believe I will see you 2 weeks from

[2:12:17] today and maybe some of you next

[2:12:18] weekend.

[2:12:20] Yeah, until then,

[2:12:21] all my love.

[2:12:26] Uh

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Walsh argues that truth is not a concept or belief but the plain fact of being, the "I" that is aware. Because it is so self-evident, people overlook it while searching for ideas about it. He presents this as the reason many seekers miss it.
In the talk, self-inquiry means turning attention toward the one who sees, thinks, and suffers rather than toward the objects of experience. Walsh models this by asking whether you can actually find the "I" that is suffering or whether it is only a thought. The aim is to see the thought of "I" clearly rather than to accept it unexamined.
Walsh says the sentence "I think" contains a thought about a thinker, so it cannot be the ground of being. He jokingly corrects Descartes, saying you do not need thought in order to exist. Being, in his account, is simply present and does not depend on any mental claim.
Walsh criticizes meditation being reduced to a return on investment, such as less stress, better health, or manifestation. He acknowledges these benefits but calls them side effects. He says the real point is to bring attention to what is seeing rather than to what is seen.
No. In the talk, Walsh does not ask you to change or suppress feelings. He asks you to notice the feelings, the thoughts about them, and whether the "I" that suffers can be found as a separate object. The inquiry is about seeing clearly, not about forcing a different emotional state.
According to the channel description and the talk, Walsh draws on Advaita Vedanta, Zen, and Christian mysticism, and he credits his own teacher with bringing his understanding into focus. He says he started his spiritual path at 19. The talk also mentions early seers of India who recognized the I as the center of experience.
The talk was published on the GP Walsh YouTube channel on April 19, 2026, and runs about two hours and twelve minutes. Walsh's website is gpwalsh.com, where he offers a free private consultation. The livestream format includes live questions and improvised discussion.
