Why Pleasure Fades: Diminishing Returns and Lasting Joy

Sounds True
Sounds True

Picture a traveler who finally reaches the Italian village she dreamed about for years. The meal is extraordinary. She tastes it and feels something open in her chest. Now picture the same meal arriving at her table every night for a week, then for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the same dish that once lifted her now feels like an obligation. In "From Fleeting Pleasure to Lasting Joy," an episode of The Michael Singer Podcast presented by Sounds True, Singer uses scenes like this to ask a question most spiritual teaching handles badly: if pleasure can open us, why does it so reliably leave us wanting more, and what would it take for joy to stop depending on conditions? The episode, drawn from a talk Singer gave, argues that positive experiences are not the enemy. The trouble lies in what we require from them, and in the habit of closing our hearts whenever life fails to match what we expected.

Why do so many spiritual teachings warn against positive experiences?

Singer opens by naming the tension directly. He notes that many religious and ancient teachings tell practitioners to stay away from things that please them, things that turn them on, and things that tempt them. He is not interested in simply repeating that warning. He splits the category in two. The first kind is primal and body-oriented: taste, sight, touch, smell, sound. These can feel good, and in his framing the senses themselves are not sinister. The second kind is the one that matters for the rest of the talk, because it has a different effect on the person having it.

The distinction is between sensations that simply feel good and experiences that carry something beyond sensation. Some sensory pleasures, Singer says, are strictly body-oriented. They have no lasting positive effect. They just feel good, and they draw you down toward more of the same. That pull is what binds attention to the senses, and it is why he calls the shallow kind dangerous. The more useful question is not whether a pleasure is allowed, but what it does to the person who receives it.

What is the law of diminishing returns doing to your senses?

Singer's answer comes from economics, a field he says he studied on his way to his own awakening. The law of diminishing returns, as he states it, is simple: the more you get of something, the less you need or want it.

"The more you get something, the less you need it or want it. That is a truth and you get used to it. The senses get used to it." (Michael Singer, The Michael Singer Podcast, Sounds True, 4:09)

His chef example makes the point concrete. Suppose a friend flies in the finest Italian chef to cook you the dish you once loved abroad. You accept the present. Then you are asked if you would like the same meal the next night, and the night after, and then for every meal of five days. The dish has not changed. It tastes just as good, if not better. Still, Singer says, there is no way you will not grow sick of it very soon. He is describing the mechanism behind a great deal of modern life, including the marketing logic that depends on novelty.

"So, the net result is there's no way you're going to say, 'Yes, I want to have that meal.' The chef makes it the same way. It's just tasted the same." (Michael Singer, The Michael Singer Podcast, Sounds True, 5:06)

The consequence is an escalating appetite. The senses adapt, so the same stimulus stops working, and you must find something stronger. Singer calls this addiction. A pleasure that once shocked you into delight now requires more intensity to produce the same result. Each step up the ladder costs more and returns less. Anyone who has chased a bigger rush, a bigger purchase, or a louder thrill knows the pattern, and Singer's point is that the pattern is structural. It is not a personal failing. It is the way attention behaves when it is fed by sensation alone.

Can a pleasant experience blow you away in a good way?

Singer does not conclude that every good moment is a trap. He describes a different kind of experience, one he treats as a kind of shock. Think of seeing a sunset as you turn a corner. Most of us have said that a view blew us away. Singer takes that phrase seriously. What, he asks, did it blow away?

His answer is that the experience was strong enough to clear out the internal noise. The worries, anxieties, hopes, dreams, preferences, and fears that normally occupy the mind were pushed aside by something arriving through the senses. You did not have to meditate or recite a mantra to get there. The sunset did the work.

"It blew all that garbage you have inside your mind and inside your heart that has you bound on a regular basis." (Michael Singer, The Michael Singer Podcast, Sounds True, 6:58)

There is a condition attached. Singer insists that you have to be open to the experience you are having. If you are busy with your inner dialogue, the sunset will not reach you. The mantra you do before looking at the view is valuable, but it can also keep you so occupied inside that the outer experience never lands. Openness, not technique, is what lets the moment work on you.

What does it mean for an experience to distract you from yourself?

Singer offers a practical test. Take a trip to Hawaii and bring yourself along, and if nothing shocks you out of your own head, the trip may feel boring. Go to a movie, and the theater may be sticky and hot, with a stranger beside you, and you may be aware of none of the film because you are still in your thoughts. A film that captures your attention does something different. It pulls your consciousness away from your internal chatter and toward the screen. That redirection, he says, is what makes the experience feel good.

The test, in his phrasing, is whether something distracts you from yourself. If it does, the experience can be a doorway. If it does not, you are simply with yourself, which may be fine but is not the same as being opened. Singer also warns that repetition erodes this effect. Attend the same concert fifteen times and the music is still playing, but at some point it no longer shocks you out of yourself. You start saying it was as good as last time. The newness was doing the work, and once it fades, the experience becomes ordinary again.

This is why Singer keeps returning to his opening distinction. A pleasure that merely stimulates may not be healthy to repeat, and it certainly should not be pursued all the time. A pleasure that clears away the noise and lets something higher come through is a different matter. Singer is careful here. He is not saying every intense experience is spiritually useful. He is saying the question to ask is what happens to you while the experience is working on you.

How do you enjoy an experience without clinging to it?

The episode's description makes the practical stakes clear: pleasurable experiences can open you and awaken a beautiful flow of energy, but if that flow depends on particular conditions, it will fade. The answer is not to reject love, success, or other positive experiences. You can enjoy them, learn from them, and let them pass without clinging.

Singer's broader approach is to treat each experience as a lesson in its own right. In the later portion of the episode he discusses learning from what you encounter, rather than measuring life by how often it delivers a rush. The point is not to stop feeling. It is to notice the feeling, take what it teaches, and allow it to move on. He also raises the traditional Buddhist image of clinging, and the difference between holding a moment and letting it raise you. Enjoyment that lifts you is different from enjoyment you must grip to keep alive.

Why does closing your heart keep joy out of reach?

The episode's closing argument is about the heart. The description puts it plainly: when you stop closing your heart whenever life differs from your expectations, you become open to an unconditional well-being that was within you all along. This is the emotional inversion of the diminishing-returns problem. If you need the world to match your preferences before you let yourself feel good, you will always be waiting for the next thing that works. Joy becomes something you earn and then lose.

Singer's answer is to notice the moments when you shut down because reality disagrees with what you wanted. In those moments, you can choose not to close. You can let the experience be what it is. This does not mean pretending disappointment does not hurt. It means refusing to make your inner openness depend on outer outcomes. The well-being he describes is not a reward for good conditions. It is available underneath them.

Where to go from here

This episode is one of the more compact statements of a theme that runs through Singer's work. He is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Untethered Soul, and the New York Times bestsellers The Surrender Experiment and Living Untethered. He had a deep inner awakening in 1971 while working on a doctorate in economics, and in 1975 he founded Temple of the Universe, a yoga and meditation center open to people of any religion or set of beliefs. The economics background is not incidental. The law of diminishing returns is the lens through which he examines pleasure throughout this talk.

If this conversation speaks to you, watch the full episode on Sounds True's YouTube channel and listen to more episodes of The Michael Singer Podcast. Begin with the question Singer keeps circling: when a good experience ends, what remains? Try noticing one pleasure this week, not to analyze it, but to see whether it leaves you more open or simply more hungry. That small observation is where the teaching begins.

[0:46] Drag of J Masters.

[0:50] We're going to talk about very

[0:52] interesting topic tonight.

[0:55] one that people have trouble hitting

[0:58] headon because it's so subtle.

[1:01] I'm gonna start by saying it's about

[1:03] positive experiences.

[1:06] There are teachings,

[1:08] the ancient teachings, a lot of

[1:10] teachings, a lot of religious teachings

[1:13] that talk about

[1:16] stay away from positive experiences.

[1:19] Stay away from things you enjoy. Stay

[1:20] away from things that turn you on. Stay

[1:23] away from things that tempt you. Stay

[1:25] away from all this stuff.

[1:28] I'm going to have fun tonight just

[1:30] calling those positive experiences.

[1:32] Let's start in the beginning by saying

[1:34] there's two types of positive

[1:35] experiences. Now, there's a couple of

[1:37] types. One is basal, primal, mostly body

[1:42] oriented.

[1:44] Your senses, taste, sight, touch, smell,

[1:48] etc.

[1:50] You can have what are called positive

[1:52] experiences. Meaning, first of all, it's

[1:54] a positive experience. Something that

[1:55] makes you feel good. How's that? That's

[1:57] a positive experience. So yes, you can

[2:01] get into things physiologically

[2:04] that because of the nature of the senses

[2:06] and they're there to, it's funny, not

[2:09] there to tempt you, but if you realize

[2:12] that you're way back in here, if they

[2:14] don't pull you down, you don't even know

[2:16] it's here. Who cares, right? So you

[2:19] could argue that positive experiences

[2:22] were created in order for the soul god

[2:25] to come down and play in his world. The

[2:28] difference is though there are some

[2:31] experiences that are strictly

[2:34] body oriented. They have no positive

[2:37] effect. They just feel good. They smell

[2:40] good. They taste good. and you are drawn

[2:45] down for really no reason other than to

[2:48] bind the soul into liking these positive

[2:52] experiences. The shallow ones are indeed

[2:56] very dangerous. Why? They become an

[2:58] addiction. Obviously, if you able to

[3:02] smell can be an addiction and certainly

[3:04] touch can be an addiction and hearing

[3:06] they can be addictions that basically

[3:09] you hear or see or taste something that

[3:11] really turns you on. There's no way in

[3:13] the world you want to do it again. Do

[3:14] you understand that? Not one of you

[3:16] don't want to do it again.

[3:18] And unless you get into your spiritual

[3:19] head, which I'm I'm going to encourage

[3:21] you in this talk not to. All right? It's

[3:23] wrong. I shouldn't be doing this. The

[3:25] truth of the matter is if you're

[3:26] objective and you look at it and you

[3:28] like it, you want to do it again. The

[3:31] problem is it becomes an addiction.

[3:33] Well, what's wrong with that? Then it

[3:35] binds you. It doesn't end up if you do

[3:38] enough cocaine, if you do enough sex, if

[3:40] you do enough any of these things, you

[3:42] have to do more. You constantly have to

[3:45] do more in order for it to stimulate you

[3:48] to have the same effect it had before. I

[3:50] told you before I I went through a

[3:51] doctration

[3:54] otherwise went through a doctrine of

[3:55] economics and they teach this law of

[3:57] diminishing returns. I never thought I'd

[3:59] be teaching in the temple. It's a very

[4:01] important law. It's a economic law. What

[4:04] does it say? The more you get something,

[4:07] the less you need it or want it. That is

[4:09] a truth and and you get used to it. The

[4:13] senses get used to it. So if you

[4:15] stimulate your senses certain way, you

[4:18] have to be stronger. You have to find a

[4:19] different way. So you're addicted. You

[4:22] become addicted to the sensation coming

[4:25] from the senses which does not last. I

[4:28] give the example of taste. Right?

[4:30] Staying away from the big one. All

[4:32] right?

[4:34] Let's talk about taste. So, there's this

[4:37] food that you really, really like. You

[4:39] visited, you know, Italy once before and

[4:41] oh my god, they had this meal and you

[4:44] never had anything like it again. But I

[4:46] love you so much and I spend the money

[4:48] and I fly over to America, the finest

[4:51] Italian chef that makes the finest dish

[4:54] that you like and comes over here and

[4:57] makes that dish for you that night.

[4:59] There's your present. Do you like it?

[5:02] Yeah.

[5:05] Would you like to have it for dinner

[5:06] tomorrow night? As long as the chef is

[5:08] here. You bet I would. How about the

[5:12] night after?

[5:14] Sure.

[5:16] How about breakfast, lunch, and dinner

[5:19] for five days in a row? Ah, give me

[5:22] spinach or Brussels sprouts. So, the net

[5:24] result is there's no way you're going to

[5:27] say, "Yes, I want to have that meal."

[5:29] The chef makes it the same way. It's

[5:31] just tasted the same. Test it with

[5:33] everything you can test. It is exactly

[5:35] as good, if not better. All right?

[5:37] There's no way you don't get sick of

[5:39] that very, very soon. That is the law of

[5:42] diminishing returns. It's a real

[5:45] economic law. Okay? It's used for

[5:47] marketing. It's used for all kinds of

[5:48] things. So, basically, it is the newness

[5:52] of the experience that does what? So,

[5:55] let's talk about why it has this effect.

[5:59] You're in here.

[6:01] You got problems in there. You got

[6:04] worries and anxieties and hopes and

[6:07] dreams and preferences and fears and you

[6:10] got stuff in there, don't you? And it's

[6:12] not easy to get rid of it. Okay? So, if

[6:15] something comes that shocks you, the

[6:18] sunset just shocked you when you turned

[6:21] the corner. It you know what it did? It

[6:23] blew you away. Ever use that expression?

[6:25] It blew me away. Well, you guys are so

[6:28] spiritual. What a brilliant thing to

[6:30] say. That's all the teaching is. What

[6:32] did it blow away? What did it blow away?

[6:35] It blew all that garbage you have inside

[6:37] your mind and inside your heart that has

[6:40] you bound on a regular basis, all of a

[6:42] sudden this thing was strong enough when

[6:44] it came in through your senses and

[6:46] touched you that that stuff went away by

[6:49] itself. You didn't have to meditate. You

[6:52] didn't have to do mantra. Make sure you

[6:53] do your mantra before. If you did your

[6:55] mantra before looking at it, it wouldn't

[6:56] do a thing to you. But the mantra and

[6:58] the mantra could do something. But that

[7:00] site wouldn't do a thing to you because

[7:01] you're busy with the mantra. You have to

[7:03] be open to experiencing the experience

[7:05] that you're having. But you normally are

[7:07] not. You're normally very busy inside

[7:09] yourself. And that's the experience

[7:10] you're having. So if something happens

[7:13] that distracts you, this is the key to

[7:16] what it means to like something. If it

[7:18] distracts you from yourself. If it does

[7:20] not distract you from yourself, you're

[7:23] with yourself.

[7:25] Go to Hawaii and take yourself with you.

[7:28] And don't have anything happen that is

[7:31] shocking enough to make you get out of

[7:33] your mind. How'd you like your trip?

[7:35] Boring.

[7:37] Go to a movie and go into the theater

[7:39] and sit down. And the entire time of the

[7:41] movie, you're wearing you're sitting

[7:42] inside of a theater. It's sticky and hot

[7:44] and a stranger sitting next to you. How

[7:46] you doing? You like the movie? Have a

[7:48] nice experience? You like it? Of course

[7:50] not. Go to the movie and it captures

[7:54] your attention. What does that mean

[7:56] captures your attention? You're no

[7:58] longer thinking like you were thinking

[7:59] when you walk in the theater. What does

[8:01] it mean entertaining? It drew your

[8:03] consciousness and awareness toward the

[8:06] movie or toward the instrument, you

[8:09] know, the beautiful concert. It drew

[8:12] your attention away from yourself. And

[8:14] because of that, you had an experience.

[8:17] All right? Go to the exact same concert

[8:19] 15 times in a row. No, you're not going

[8:22] to go to the exact same thing, playing

[8:23] the exact same thing over and over and

[8:25] over again. At some point, it doesn't

[8:27] have the newness of the effect of

[8:30] shocking you away from yourself. You

[8:31] start saying, "Oh, was as good as last

[8:33] time." You hear me? You're still there.

[8:36] But if it blows you away, meaning it

[8:38] blew away all that noise, then your

[8:40] conscious has the ability to be

[8:42] attracted to that and you have this nice

[8:45] experience. What is the experience? It

[8:48] is a shock experience. Say bring in a

[8:51] spiritual word. Anything that feels good

[8:55] is shocki. Shockti got caught. She

[8:58] opened up. You felt her rise up. Okay?

[9:01] Doesn't mean it's a healthy thing for

[9:02] you. Doesn't mean you should be doing it

[9:04] all the time. But if it doesn't capture

[9:06] your attention and distract you from

[9:09] yourself so that a higher energy can

[9:11] make it through your centers, you're not

[9:14] going to feel anything. So let's go back

[9:15] down to to food or taste or touch or

[9:19] smell. These are very basal primal

[9:21] levels that have sensations. And if

[9:24] they're strong enough and you're not

[9:27] used to them, why do it'll be very bad.

[9:30] Are there are there not SNM shops in New

[9:33] York?

[9:34] >> [laughter]

[9:35] >> Yes or no?

[9:36] >> Yes.

[9:37] >> Okay. All right. Why in the world would

[9:40] somebody pay good money to get SNM? All

[9:43] right.

[9:45] I'm not picking on them. If you do that,

[9:47] that's your thing. All right. But why

[9:49] would you do that? Cuz you're so closed.

[9:52] You're so blocked that it takes pain.

[9:55] Not too much. Why? They have a special

[9:57] word or something. All right. Not too

[9:59] much, but it better be something that

[10:01] distracts you from your everyday

[10:03] experience.

[10:05] Executives go to these things. Why?

[10:07] Because they're so closed. They're so

[10:10] caught in their mind. They're so caught

[10:12] that the energy can't flow. It only goes

[10:14] to the mind and gets all involved with

[10:16] the mental stuff. All right? And so I'm

[10:18] just giving you stupid examples, but

[10:20] they're real examples. People really do

[10:22] stuff. All right? Why do people do

[10:24] extreme sports? They do extreme sports.

[10:27] was an extreme sport. I went to the Army

[10:29] Navy store. I noticed there were

[10:30] parachutes and some of them had a mark

[10:33] on them 50/50. Oh, I wonder what that

[10:36] meant. [laughter]

[10:39] Well, I bought it and when I was up

[10:41] there in that plane and look at that

[10:43] 50/50,

[10:47] I ain't thinking about the wife or the

[10:50] kids, the finances. [laughter] That

[10:52] thing has pushed it to a point of

[10:56] extremeism.

[10:58] What does it mean? It distracted you. It

[11:00] blew your mind. When you jump out of

[11:02] that plane, you go to pull that thing,

[11:04] the 50/50 floating in your face, right?

[11:08] People do extreme things because they

[11:11] want to feel the energy. It's no

[11:14] different than eating. It's no, you

[11:15] know, they're just quieter things than

[11:17] 50/50s or SNMs. All right? you. So you

[11:20] enjoy eating, but if it's the same meal

[11:23] all the time, you don't. So you have to

[11:25] keep changing what you're doing in order

[11:28] for it to stimulate the energy to wake

[11:30] you up to to do this to do to a change.

[11:33] All right? So that's the lowest level of

[11:36] what it means to have an enjoyable

[11:39] experience. It's just very simple. Yes,

[11:42] you have senses. Yes, they're receptive.

[11:45] As long as it's different, and it can't

[11:47] be the same all the time. I'm going tell

[11:48] you right now, it does not turn you on.

[11:50] Okay? And by the way, well, we'll go

[11:52] there in a minute. Everything has a law

[11:55] of diminishing returns until you learn

[11:58] to transcend it by understanding what's

[12:00] going on. So there we have the basis

[12:02] level of why shouldn't I do what I

[12:05] enjoy? You notice my teachings do not

[12:08] tell you not to do what you enjoy, but I

[12:10] would like to understand what you're

[12:11] doing. You like to understand what's

[12:13] going on. Right? If you get involved in

[12:16] base level things, they're going to

[12:18] betray you. They're not going to keep

[12:21] turning you on. And you have to find

[12:23] another way to turn on. I mean, the

[12:25] classic, of course, people who do coke,

[12:27] people who do heroin, people who do

[12:29] heavier drugs, they like it so much.

[12:32] They don't do it again. They don't like

[12:33] it. But what happens is the like and the

[12:36] addiction start to fight each other. Now

[12:39] it becomes a habit. Now becomes you have

[12:41] to have to be okay as opposed to have to

[12:44] feel better. That's the epitome of the

[12:47] law of dimission of returns. Okay? It

[12:49] betrays you. The senses betray you. The

[12:51] senses are not. I'm not teaching you

[12:54] this. You should know this. The senses

[12:56] can get stimulated for a short period of

[12:59] time. If everything's exactly the way it

[13:02] likes it to be, you can get a high. You

[13:04] can get a rush. You can get turned on.

[13:06] To chase that, that's what the religions

[13:08] are trying to teach you about. lust,

[13:11] greed, and kind of stuff. All right? Is

[13:13] if you chase that, you've chased a very

[13:16] low energy that's going to betray you.

[13:17] You're not going to go any worse with

[13:19] that. But you can't say that you don't

[13:21] enjoy it. So there is a balance in

[13:24] understanding what does it mean to have

[13:26] an enjoyable experience. And are they

[13:28] wrong? It's not a matter of wrong. It's

[13:30] a matter of being wise. How's that?

[13:33] Guess what? Somebody once asked, I

[13:35] shouldn't talk like this. Somebody asked

[13:36] me, "What if marijuana became legal in

[13:39] the state of Florida?" Could happen.

[13:42] Would I I'm telling you the truth. Am I

[13:44] teaching you anything? I'm sharing,

[13:46] right? Would I smoke if if it was legal?

[13:50] And my immediate answer is I I

[13:52] absolutely would not. Why? He said, "My

[13:55] you might like it." I think I would like

[13:57] it. And that's why I wouldn't do it for

[13:59] the same reason I'm teaching you. I'm

[14:00] I'm happy. I'm fine. I'm wonderful. Why

[14:03] do I need something to be dependent

[14:05] upon? And if you like it, you're going

[14:07] to want to do it again. Why would I do

[14:08] that to him? I like him. Why would I

[14:11] make him experience something that he

[14:12] likes and then not let him have it or

[14:14] let him have it and ruin his life? Okay,

[14:17] that's wisdom. That's not renunciation.

[14:20] That's not renunciation. Renunciation

[14:24] is I want it. I want to do it. I see no

[14:27] reason not to do it, but I'm not

[14:29] supposed to. I'm not going to do it.

[14:32] That's a whole different ballgame. So,

[14:35] we're going up the ladder of what it

[14:37] means to enjoy something. All right?

[14:40] Eventually, you get to the point where

[14:43] you know you could enjoy it, but you

[14:45] don't want to. You really don't want to.

[14:48] Why do I want to put my body or my

[14:50] senses or my mind through something that

[14:53] is going to betray me and it's going to

[14:56] betray me? It doesn't work.

[14:59] That's why you mature enough to the

[15:02] point that you understand

[15:05] that sensual input is not enough to take

[15:08] you where you want to go. That doesn't

[15:10] mean you're renouncing nice experiences.

[15:14] You're just saying there's something

[15:15] richer and I'd rather go for the gold.

[15:18] I'd rather go for what's richer than sit

[15:20] and hang around with things that I know

[15:21] in the end is going to betray me. But in

[15:23] any event, you get to the point that

[15:26] you're mature enough. That's what it is.

[15:28] It's a maturity of the soul. It is not

[15:30] renunciation. It's not denial. It is not

[15:33] fear. Those should not be the factor.

[15:37] You should be wise enough and have gone

[15:39] through enough in your life to be wise

[15:41] enough to understand that the short-term

[15:43] stuff does not work. It's shortterm. And

[15:46] when you involve yourself with the

[15:47] short-term stuff, you jipped yourself

[15:49] for the long-term stuff. So, if you're

[15:51] living off the lower energies, I don't I

[15:54] just lower because you know just bodily

[15:56] oriented. Not that they're bad, they're

[15:58] just energy. It's all just shockti. I

[16:00] told you it's all said and done.

[16:02] Anything that's going on that feels good

[16:04] is because the shock came up. Then you

[16:06] start getting a little more

[16:08] connoissurish about the stuff. Cheap

[16:10] wine is not good enough. You start

[16:12] paying attention. You say, "Well, what

[16:14] makes the shock to come up?" Well, it

[16:17] could be this thing called love.

[16:20] Well, that's pretty different. Not

[16:22] necessarily physically oriented. It's

[16:24] something that happens inside of you.

[16:26] I'm skipping a bunch of steps. All

[16:28] right? But something happens inside of

[16:30] you because your heart opened. You're no

[16:33] longer calling because I had a drug cuz

[16:34] I went to thing or I we did all these

[16:37] different things to get high. My heart

[16:39] opened. Why? Well, we can look at that.

[16:42] But when your heart opens, you like it,

[16:45] don't you? Does it have to have a law of

[16:48] diminishing returns? It does not have to

[16:50] have law of diminish returns. Period.

[16:53] Does it? Usually.

[16:56] Usually it does, but I'll explain to you

[16:58] why. And that's going to start to

[16:59] understand what it means to get a

[17:02] connoisseur of having a positive

[17:04] experience. Love is a very positive

[17:06] experience. By the way, before I even

[17:08] hit love, there are other positive

[17:09] experiences. How does it feel to win?

[17:12] Competitive sport, business, finances.

[17:16] How's it feel? Get high. Okay. Same

[17:20] thing. Why? It wasn't what you were used

[17:22] to. It's like, "Oh my god, he bought it.

[17:25] I had a big sale. I'm going to meet the

[17:27] quarter." All right. When you receive

[17:31] experiences

[17:32] that in a sense shock you out of your

[17:34] natural negativity and you know you have

[17:36] it, fears, anxieties, desires, there

[17:40] just all kinds of stuff kind of goes on

[17:42] back there. You know you're not get

[17:44] everything you want, right? But

[17:46] sometimes have a positive experience.

[17:48] What does that mean? God, how to do this

[17:51] quickly? I'm trying to take a topic.

[17:52] It's so big. All right. What does it

[17:54] mean? It means that over the course of

[17:56] your life, you've had experiences that

[17:59] turned you on and turned you off. The

[18:01] ratio is about a thousand to one. Every

[18:04] single day of your life, the weather,

[18:07] the this, what somebody talks to you,

[18:08] what they wore, and every single thing

[18:11] turns you off. Has a tendency to turn

[18:13] you off. How many things blow you away?

[18:16] I'm sorry to tell you, it's very rare.

[18:18] So, you've stored this stuff. Now an

[18:21] event is happening outside.

[18:24] It happens to match

[18:26] what you stored from your past as a very

[18:30] positive experience. Okay? It is going

[18:33] to open you. Why? Because it matched the

[18:38] energy coming in matched the energy

[18:40] inside and you opened and you felt love

[18:43] and you felt inspiration and you felt

[18:45] woo you know it's exhilaration. That's

[18:49] shaky. It's all shocked. You get that

[18:51] straight. Don't ever think that

[18:53] something is God and not God. There's no

[18:55] energy in this universe but God. The

[18:57] question is, is it flowing? So, when

[18:59] something matches your mental or

[19:01] emotional preferences,

[19:03] you get higher. You feel positive. Why

[19:08] doesn't it last? Because I told you

[19:10] there's about a thousand to one of the

[19:12] things that will turn you on versus the

[19:13] thing that turn you off. Everything

[19:16] turns you off. Pay attention. Okay?

[19:18] Somebody's wearing the same dress as you

[19:20] when you went to the party. Somebody's

[19:21] dancing a little too closely with

[19:23] somebody who you thought you might be

[19:25] interested in someday. [snorts]

[19:27] It doesn't take much,

[19:30] does it? But it takes an awful lot to

[19:34] open you. So what happens is it opens.

[19:38] It can open. It can't be love at first

[19:39] sight. It can be over time you learn to

[19:42] get together. You learn more about

[19:44] somebody and and you're more open. and

[19:45] you become open toward them in general.

[19:48] You all, and it's true, every one of

[19:50] you, you're afraid to open your heart.

[19:52] Well, you've gotten hurt before and you

[19:55] put a little governor on that little

[19:57] thing. Calm down. I think we're going to

[20:00] have a few more dates before we decide

[20:02] we like somebody, right? And then you

[20:04] get to know them better. Something and

[20:05] you feel safer. Very hard for you to

[20:07] open your heart when you don't feel

[20:08] safe. That's part of the game that as

[20:11] long as it matches everything. What do

[20:14] you mean? I told you he doesn't slurp a

[20:15] soup. He gets along with my father or he

[20:18] doesn't get along with my father and I

[20:19] like that. It's whatever you want. It

[20:23] happens to match what's going on out

[20:24] there. Or at least you project it that

[20:26] way. You understand that? I mean, where

[20:28] do you find out? Where do you find out

[20:31] what they're really like? Come on.

[20:32] You've been around the block. They're

[20:34] never the way you thought they were. And

[20:35] they'll never be the way you think

[20:36] they're going to be. Ever. Never. They

[20:39] can't be. I've explained it to you a

[20:40] million times. They are the sum of their

[20:43] learned experiences. That's what they

[20:45] are. Those experiences they had that

[20:47] molded their psyche that molded what

[20:49] they like and don't like and how they

[20:51] act and what they accept and what they

[20:52] don't accept and every single thing. And

[20:54] you are the sum of your learned

[20:55] experiences and you did not have the

[20:57] same experiences did you since you were

[20:59] born. Not even close. So no one is going

[21:03] to match what you decided you wanted

[21:05] inside. But if it looks like somebody

[21:07] might, they just pulled up with the

[21:09] right kind of car and they open the door

[21:12] and they actually open the door for you.

[21:14] People don't do that anymore. Wow,

[21:16] that's really very similar. I like that

[21:18] cuz you watched a movie once and

[21:19] somebody opened the door for somebody,

[21:22] right? And and next thing you know,

[21:24] you're opening. You're feeling safe.

[21:26] Where do you find out what this person's

[21:28] really like? Have you have you not been

[21:30] in a relationship, you found out what

[21:31] the person is really like? Have you ever

[21:33] said to somebody, "I can't believe you

[21:34] did that. I would never have done that.

[21:38] How could you do that to me? That sounds

[21:40] rational, doesn't it? That's completely

[21:41] irrational. They have totally different

[21:44] upbringing. They look at it totally

[21:45] different than you do, right? But ain't

[21:47] going to show up in the beginning. Why?

[21:49] Because they're trying to impress you to

[21:51] like them.

[21:53] It's not their fault. You're trying to

[21:55] have a nice experience. So, you start

[21:57] seeing why it doesn't tend to last. You

[21:59] stay together for the kids, [snorts]

[22:02] right? You stay together for finances.

[22:04] We're really good friends. That's

[22:06] beautiful. That's not the same as love.

[22:09] They said some people say that's mature

[22:11] love. No, no. That love that you feel

[22:14] that blows you away, that's love. And it

[22:18] can be there all the time. And that's

[22:20] what I'm talking to you about. Again, go

[22:22] for the gold. So, we have the the base

[22:25] level physiological enjoyments, and

[22:28] they're rather shallow, but they're not

[22:30] wrong. They're just shallow. Okay? And

[22:32] then you start to get into psychological

[22:35] where things are matching what you want.

[22:37] You can think about something

[22:40] that you really get turned on to think

[22:42] it might happen and get turned on. Just

[22:44] a thought can do it, can't it? It's

[22:46] called positive thinking. You're taught

[22:48] positive thinking. Well, let's go the

[22:50] opposite. I want you to be all excited

[22:53] while you're being tremendously

[22:54] negative. When your mind is saying,

[22:55] "This will never work. No, it's not

[22:57] going to work. I can't even trust any of

[22:58] this stuff. It never works out for me."

[23:00] Now let's see you open up and feel

[23:01] wonderful.

[23:04] What's that all about? It's about the

[23:06] fact that your body, your heart, and

[23:10] your mind are different vibration levels

[23:12] of energy. That's all they are. Someday

[23:17] they're going to develop machinery

[23:20] instruments that can read your thoughts.

[23:23] Not guess at them. Why? They're really

[23:27] there. When you're having a thought,

[23:30] where is it? Point to it. Where is it?

[23:33] You don't even bother thinking like

[23:34] that. You say, "It's nowhere." Well, it

[23:36] is. So, you're looking at it. You see

[23:38] it. You experience it. You have

[23:40] thoughts. Can somebody else tune into

[23:43] your thoughts? Absolutely. A true

[23:45] psychic [clears throat] rare, far

[23:47] between. But there are real psychics

[23:49] that can tune into your thoughts. And

[23:51] someday the machines will do it. Why?

[23:52] Let's get this straight. Thoughts are

[23:54] things. A thought is a real thing. You

[23:57] can create it with the power of mind,

[23:59] but it's really there. When you sit in a

[24:02] car driving with somebody and all of a

[24:04] sudden you both turn to each other and

[24:05] say together, "Have you thought about

[24:07] sis Charlie?" And no one has thought

[24:10] about Charlie or mentioned it for 5

[24:11] years and nothing happened that would be

[24:12] any reason why that came into your mind.

[24:14] Ever happened? You're tuning into each

[24:17] other's thoughts. They're there. They're

[24:19] real. They are real. They're just a very

[24:22] high vibration rate of energy. So if you

[24:25] are having positive thoughts, you feel

[24:27] better. Of course you do. You're more

[24:29] open. There's more energy coming

[24:31] through. If you have negative thoughts,

[24:33] then the energy stops flowing because

[24:35] it's capped at that level. Dark thoughts

[24:38] are dark. High thoughts are high and

[24:42] they just can get you going. It get be

[24:44] nice. All right. So the problem is

[24:48] generally you're not control of your

[24:50] thoughts. Something has to happen

[24:52] outside that makes your mind turn

[24:54] positive. You see somebody you haven't

[24:57] seen for years. You've been in a bad

[24:59] mood. You've been depressed. You feel

[25:01] low. And you see this person and just

[25:03] somehow whoa, the whole mind changes,

[25:06] doesn't it? All of a sudden, wow, I

[25:08] haven't seen her for so long. I wonder

[25:09] what she's up to. Your whole

[25:11] conversation inside changes and you feel

[25:13] energy because these are vibration rates

[25:16] of energy. The same thing with your

[25:17] emotions. Go have some really bad

[25:19] emotions and depression. get depressed.

[25:22] Don't What does it mean to be depressed?

[25:24] It means your emotional plane, that

[25:27] energy plane is vibrating at a very

[25:30] There are planes of reality. What do you

[25:33] mean planes of reality? The primal

[25:35] vibration of creation is a very very

[25:38] high vibration, right? God created

[25:40] heavens and earth, right? It's a high

[25:42] vibration. It sinks down and down and

[25:45] down and down and down and down and

[25:46] down. And the lower vibrations are very

[25:49] hard to raise up as you work with them.

[25:52] You can raise the energy up. You can

[25:54] raise your mind up. You or something can

[25:56] happen outside based upon the stuff you

[25:58] stored inside you. You know about all

[25:59] that psychology and suppressions,

[26:01] repressions and denials and resistances.

[26:05] You store that stuff inside of you. And

[26:06] what happen when you store negativity

[26:08] inside of you? Don't you dare think it

[26:10] doesn't have effect on your life. Every

[26:11] single negative thing you ever stored

[26:13] inside of you is still inside of you.

[26:15] Why? because you won't let it go. When

[26:17] it tries to come back up, you push it

[26:19] back down. It is blocking your energy

[26:21] flow. It's all about energy. The lower

[26:24] vibrations of energy block the ability

[26:26] for the highers to come up and vibrate

[26:27] at that level because the lower levels

[26:29] are keeping them down. All right? So,

[26:30] now we were talking about love or or

[26:33] success or inspiration. All right? These

[26:37] things happen because your mind and your

[26:40] heart match what's happening outside.

[26:42] You do not get inspired by something

[26:43] that turns you off.

[26:45] >> [laughter]

[26:45] >> Hey, it's hard silly to even talk about,

[26:47] right? Because you you live it every day

[26:49] of your life. You're not paying

[26:50] attention. So then basically you look

[26:52] for things that will turn you on and you

[26:55] try to think of things that will turn

[26:56] you on. That's a person's positive mind.

[26:58] That's really, really nice. Okay? You

[27:01] can find out when I'm done. It's not

[27:02] high enough. It's good. It's very nice

[27:05] to work with it. If you work with

[27:07] positive mental energy, you can attract

[27:09] more things to you. And not just

[27:11] attract, you're more capable of

[27:14] interacting with them from a positive

[27:16] point of view. Therefore, you create

[27:17] positive. Positive generates positive.

[27:20] Darkness generates darkness. Okay? And

[27:22] this is not a religious teaching. It's

[27:24] physics. It's truth. So, the whole topic

[27:27] we're talking about is enjoyable

[27:29] experiences. So, now we've worked all

[27:31] the way down from sensual stuff, which

[27:33] is very short-lived, and now we're

[27:35] getting up to more psychological stuff,

[27:38] which can either be short-lived or not.

[27:40] and you've been turned on and then all

[27:41] of a sudden somebody dies and all of a

[27:43] sudden somebody leaves you. Then all of

[27:44] a sudden you lose your job. Then all of

[27:46] a sudden the market goes down and it

[27:48] just you're going to interact with the

[27:50] world and it's not going to be the way

[27:51] you want all the time and then all of a

[27:53] sudden it's hard to stay positive and

[27:55] people can get depressed. So what was

[27:57] happening? You were living off the fact

[27:59] that the outside match the inside. What

[28:02] happens if the outside doesn't match the

[28:04] inside? Ah what happens if suddenly the

[28:06] outside does match the inside? It

[28:08] surprises you. Oh my god. She said she

[28:10] loved me. I didn't even know she noticed

[28:12] me. I can't wait to see her again.

[28:14] Right. Then she says it was April Fools.

[28:17] Just kidding. How fast does it go? All

[28:20] right. So, that's another type of an

[28:23] enjoyable experience. But again, its

[28:26] basis is the psychological mumbo jumbo

[28:29] that's going inside of you based upon

[28:32] experience you've had from your past.

[28:34] You don't decide what you like and

[28:35] dislike. You do not. You're programmed

[28:38] by your past experiences. Do you

[28:40] understand that? Said no, I went to

[28:42] Nepal.

[28:44] Why'd you go to Nepal? What if you

[28:45] didn't go to Nepal? Right? Every, you

[28:47] don't think of what I say. You're the

[28:48] summar experiences. People don't get it.

[28:51] Every experience you have is programming

[28:54] you. So yes, if you went to Nepal and

[28:57] sat with some Buddhist monks and had an

[28:59] amazing experience, it has programmed

[29:02] you. If on the other hand, you went

[29:04] there and then found out that they were

[29:06] all frauds. They were trying to get your

[29:08] money, it programmed you. So your

[29:11] experience is programming what you like

[29:13] and dislike. You are not deciding.

[29:16] You're deciding based upon the

[29:18] experiences you had. And you know it,

[29:20] right? You sit there and tell somebody,

[29:21] "No, no, I did that trip. I went up to

[29:24] Nepal. They were all just getting rid of

[29:26] money. I couldn't even believe it."

[29:28] Okay, there you go. Somebody else. Wow,

[29:31] that's not true. I had this amazing

[29:33] experience when the masters up there

[29:35] became enlightened and I had this

[29:36] moments, right? Which is it? It's

[29:39] whatever you experienced and how you

[29:41] interpreted what you experienced which

[29:43] is based upon what you experienced

[29:44] before there. That's 25°ree chess. You

[29:47] know, it's not even what happened. It's

[29:49] based upon what happened before to you.

[29:52] How you saw what happened and how you

[29:54] interpreted it. That is the sum of your

[29:56] learned experiences. So yes, the

[29:59] physiological being is going to betray

[30:01] you. Not not bad, but it will not take

[30:04] you there. It's not that positive an

[30:07] experience. It's not strong enough to

[30:09] last. Well, the psychological is exactly

[30:11] the same. I skipped 20 steps in between.

[30:13] It's exactly the same. And most you

[30:15] don't know that yet. If you go out there

[30:17] looking for someone's going to turn you

[30:18] on, good luck. That's one thing. If you

[30:22] meet somebody and it turns you on,

[30:23] that's a nice experience you're having.

[30:25] But if you go out there looking for

[30:28] someone that matches your past

[30:30] experiences and what you want them to be

[30:32] like, right? Better than that match like

[30:35] but let's say they like dogs.

[30:38] Okay. And you like dogs. That's a reason

[30:41] to fall in love

[30:44] talking about the dogs. That's the wrong

[30:46] kind of dog or poops all over the place.

[30:48] What are you doing? You're taking what

[30:51] your mind is telling you will turn you

[30:53] on. It didn't turn you on, but you're

[30:55] saying again, I have a little time. You

[30:58] have the Oh god, I'm getting so much

[31:00] trouble this talk. There's dating sites.

[31:03] Anything about that? I'm a computer guy.

[31:05] All right. There's dating sites. By the

[31:06] way, they were programmed by a geek. All

[31:09] right. So, [laughter]

[31:11] didn't know anything about love or

[31:13] anything else, right?

[31:16] Okay. So, how does a dating site work?

[31:19] They start off, do you prefer male or

[31:21] female? Now, anybody ask that first? All

[31:23] right. So, we get that down. All right.

[31:25] Then it says, "Do you like blondes or

[31:26] brunette sort of things?" Right? Do you

[31:28] like somebody who's fairly loose with

[31:30] the behavior or somebody who's strict

[31:32] and religious and do you like this kind

[31:34] of food? Do you like these kind of

[31:36] animals? What kind of animal do you

[31:38] like? And they just go right down the

[31:39] list. And you filling this out and

[31:42] you're so excited to turn it in. Why

[31:44] turn it in? You already met yourself.

[31:47] [laughter]

[31:49] You understand that? You're trying to

[31:51] describe you. Isn't there saying about

[31:53] the kind of food I like? What if they

[31:54] filled out they like the opposite kind

[31:56] of food you like and they like opposite

[31:57] everything else? You I don't think so.

[31:59] I'm not interested. Why do they even

[32:00] bother filling the thing out? All right.

[32:02] You are describing you and you are the

[32:05] sum of your learned experiences and

[32:07] you're going fishing to sit there and

[32:09] say there's somebody out there that's

[32:10] going to match me. There is not. There

[32:12] can't be. Why? Because they're the sum

[32:14] of their learned experiences. Now, can

[32:16] there be a very powerful experience that

[32:19] you had that dominated all your other

[32:21] experiences? And could they have had a

[32:24] similar experience or somehow associated

[32:26] that makes you feel better about it?

[32:28] Yes. But that they're going to find out

[32:31] that's just one experience. They're much

[32:33] more complicated than that. And maybe

[32:35] they don't even know it. Then all of a

[32:37] sudden, mommy comes up and get to Freud,

[32:39] right? There's all this stuff in there.

[32:42] And so eventually you get to the point

[32:43] you realize your psychological

[32:46] matchings.

[32:48] How about I say it this way? Getting

[32:50] what you want

[32:52] is very short-lived.

[32:55] There's not a single time that any of

[32:57] you got what you wanted and didn't want

[33:00] something else. No matter what it is. It

[33:03] goes for relationships, goes for

[33:04] children, goes for cars, goes for jobs.

[33:08] There's even diminishing returns on this

[33:10] stuff. And not to mention that you have

[33:12] you ever changed your mind? Have you

[33:15] ever changed your mind? Well, now what

[33:17] do I do? I filled that form and

[33:20] something happened yesterday and I don't

[33:21] feel that way anymore. That's how easy

[33:23] it can change. So, how are you going to

[33:25] find what matches you when you're not

[33:27] even matching you and you start catching

[33:29] on that? Yes, I've showed you how the

[33:31] body can be short-lived with it. Yes, it

[33:33] was a nice experience, enjoyable

[33:35] experience. I'm telling you eventually

[33:37] you'll reach a point but you have to be

[33:38] very mature that you realize the psyche

[33:40] is no different. It's as fickle as the

[33:42] body. It'll be easier. The body's at

[33:44] least physiological. The psyche whatever

[33:47] you want. Think of whatever you want. Go

[33:49] to bed, have a nightmare, wake up in the

[33:52] morning

[33:53] and have a totally different opinion

[33:55] about your job or about the person

[33:58] sleeping next to you. It's just the

[34:00] psyche is just nothing. It just changes

[34:02] with a whim. In fact, you have to be

[34:05] taught not to change. You should be more

[34:07] disciplined with your mind and so on

[34:09] because otherwise you're going to go all

[34:10] over the freaking place. And so those

[34:14] type of experiences, I'm getting into

[34:16] more deeper territory now. You're going

[34:18] to go through that. You're going to go

[34:20] through experiences that are enjoyable

[34:22] at the psychological level, mental and

[34:25] emotional. They're enjoyable because

[34:27] they match what you thought you wanted.

[34:29] They're not enjoyable because they

[34:30] didn't match. They match what you

[34:32] thought you wanted. and you're going to

[34:33] get high off of it. And in most cases,

[34:35] you're going to go running after it,

[34:37] which is different than running after

[34:38] cocaine or heroin or even, you know,

[34:41] 50/50s. All right? Is it's safer

[34:45] sometimes. All right? And but basically,

[34:48] it's it's going to do the same thing.

[34:51] You know, you change your mind. Have you

[34:53] Okay, now don't look at anybody around

[34:55] you. Have you ever thought you were

[34:57] madly in love with somebody and they did

[34:59] something or said something or didn't

[35:00] say something or didn't do something and

[35:03] you went a little struggle inside

[35:04] yourself?

[35:06] Who am I kidding? Do I really like this

[35:08] guy? I don't know. I I don't think I

[35:11] like someone who did something like

[35:12] that. How fast can it change? Anybody?

[35:16] Oh, then all of a sudden, yeah, that's

[35:18] happening, right? He or she tells you,

[35:19] I'm going to call you in 15 minutes. I

[35:21] miss you so much. I'm going to rush home

[35:23] and call you in 15. Okay. and be be home

[35:25] in 15 minutes. Half hour goes by. Every

[35:28] minute of that half hour, boy, lying to

[35:31] me is what somebody else was. Come on.

[35:33] Wasn't mind do, right? Does all that

[35:35] kind of junk, right? And you finally

[35:36] said, "I don't put up with this." My

[35:38] god, 45 minutes late. Didn't even call.

[35:40] That's absolutely ridiculous, right? And

[35:42] you really close. Can you do that? Can

[35:44] you do that? Is that hilarious? All

[35:47] right. Then what happens? Then all of a

[35:49] sudden he or she shows up, opens the

[35:51] door with four dozen the most beautiful

[35:55] roses you've ever seen and says, "Happy

[35:58] 3-w weekek anniversary."

[36:02] [laughter]

[36:03] To which you had no idea. How long does

[36:07] it take for you to go from closed, I've

[36:10] had it, to oh my god, I love you so

[36:13] much. Answer me. Are you willing to look

[36:17] and see what's going on? The mind and

[36:20] the heart are fickle. The human mind and

[36:22] the human heart are fickle. They're

[36:23] based on their past experiences. And if

[36:25] things seem to match, they'll open. If

[36:27] things seem to not match, they'll close.

[36:29] And if things don't open you, then you

[36:31] get bored. I I don't want to talk about

[36:33] it's amazing. Okay. So now you have this

[36:36] next level of an enjoyable experience.

[36:39] Does that mean you shouldn't have

[36:40] relationships? Of course, it doesn't

[36:42] mean that, right? It doesn't even mean

[36:44] that you shouldn't eat something that

[36:45] you enjoy. It means that you're wise

[36:48] enough,

[36:49] right? I used to do it to leave a little

[36:52] bit of the thing that you like the most

[36:54] on the plate. Why? Just so you don't get

[36:57] attached. Just so that you're not

[37:00] playing this game of more is better.

[37:03] Because more is not better. There's

[37:05] diminishing returns. Okay. There's a

[37:08] certain amount of wisdom, the discipline

[37:09] of wisdom that helps you enjoy keep

[37:13] doing a reasonable level of enjoyment.

[37:15] And that's why they say lust. I don't

[37:17] use words like that, right? What they

[37:19] mean by lust is you don't have that

[37:21] wisdom. You don't have that balance and

[37:24] it just you lusting after something

[37:27] without any thinking. You just go jump

[37:29] after it because it has some good

[37:31] energy. Fair enough. Good definition of

[37:33] lust. Okay. But that doesn't mean that

[37:35] food's lust, right? It means you're

[37:37] disciplined enough to enjoy it and

[37:40] balance yourself. It's the same thing

[37:41] psychologically. Do you say you never

[37:43] have a relationship? I don't see it. I

[37:45] have no relationship. Never touched

[37:46] anybody. Okay, fine. It's like yes, you

[37:49] had no experiences in your life. That's

[37:50] wonderful. And maybe you meditated deep

[37:52] enough to go into samadei. All right. I

[37:54] don't know if you wasted your life

[37:56] because you didn't have one because

[37:57] what? Earth is a place souls to evolve.

[38:00] Did you hide from your evolution? Is

[38:02] that what you did? Okay. Okay, we're

[38:05] going I'm talking very maturely. So,

[38:07] you're going to go through experiences

[38:10] that attract you psychologically and

[38:12] emotionally and some of them you will

[38:14] find out you're in that relationship.

[38:16] How? If you know how you got in a

[38:18] relationship, it didn't blow you away.

[38:23] If you fall in love and it call Jabbron,

[38:27] I used to not like Jabbron, right?

[38:29] Because when I was doing disciplined

[38:30] practices, right? cuz he said when love

[38:33] beckons you follow her. That line alone

[38:37] said, "What are you telling them? You're

[38:38] supposed to be a prophet." He is. He is

[38:41] a prophet. All right? Because the next

[38:43] line is though her ways may be steep and

[38:46] painful and the the sword hidden in her

[38:48] pinion could wound you. Right? In other

[38:51] words, she's for your growth. In fact,

[38:53] he literally says, "Just as love is for

[38:55] your growth, so she for your pruning."

[38:57] It's beautiful. Jabbron on love. All

[38:59] right? And what's he saying? You go

[39:01] through what you need to go through so

[39:03] you end up higher.

[39:05] It's not about that one thing. It's

[39:08] about letting go of yourself. It's about

[39:11] letting go of yourself and being willing

[39:12] to let go of yourself. Okay. So now

[39:15] we're sitting in a relationship. You

[39:17] have relationships. Of course you do.

[39:19] Let's say you want to have a

[39:21] relationship. That's a whole different

[39:22] ballgame. Sorry.

[39:25] the vast difference between you're

[39:27] minding your own business, you're

[39:29] growing, you're doing the best you can,

[39:32] and you fall in love or a job

[39:35] opportunity comes to you, there's just

[39:37] way too much you can imagine. I could

[39:38] even get that opportunity, right?

[39:40] There's no thinking about it. It blows

[39:43] away all the lower energy. You

[39:45] understand that? It guides you. Is that

[39:47] wrong? No, it's not wrong. Can you be

[39:50] wise about it to understand, okay, this

[39:53] is what's happening. I'm going to use

[39:55] this for my growth. It's not my growth.

[39:58] I can use this for my growth. The fact

[40:01] that I'm so madly in love with you that

[40:03] I can't see straight. There's nothing

[40:05] wrong with that because right now see

[40:07] straight means hanging out with me. Then

[40:10] all of a sudden I have eyes for you. You

[40:12] you you blew my heart away. I got

[40:14] attracted to that thing. All right. A

[40:16] wise person looks at that. If it's

[40:17] strong if it's not strong enough, I

[40:19] guess here's the difference. If you're

[40:21] looking for that to happen, I feel sorry

[40:22] for you because it can't happen while

[40:25] you're looking for it to happen. The

[40:27] very fact that your psyche has said, "I

[40:29] need this. I want that." Then that's not

[40:31] the same thing as your psyche being

[40:33] blown away by the experience of energy.

[40:35] Do you understand that? And so I I don't

[40:38] mean I feel sorry for I feel sorry for

[40:39] anybody. You go through what you need to

[40:40] go through. All right. I I told you I

[40:43] had a friend in in college, very nice

[40:45] young man, and I'll never forget

[40:47] something he said to me. He said, "I

[40:49] have my job. I already graduated. I've

[40:51] got my job and I really like my job and

[40:53] I like living in Florida. I like I love

[40:54] Gainesville tremendously. Right. I'm

[40:56] going to move up to Massachusetts,

[40:58] right? But it's it's cold up there.

[41:01] Yeah, I know. I don't like the cold. I

[41:03] like the hot. Why are you moving to

[41:04] Massachusetts? Well, because there are

[41:06] women colleges up there are really

[41:08] really good. I'm very intellectual. I

[41:10] want to meet an intellectual woman who

[41:12] matches me. I'm going to move up there

[41:14] and live in the snow. [laughter]

[41:16] Right. He's trying to It never happened.

[41:18] By the way, it isn't ever going to be

[41:20] what you think it's going to be. It

[41:22] can't be cuz your thoughts are made out

[41:25] of your experiences. All right? So, if

[41:27] you're looking for it, you're not going

[41:29] to find it. It's not going to be. You

[41:31] can't find what you're looking for.

[41:34] Because what you're looking for is your

[41:35] programming from your past. That's why

[41:38] you look at it that way that you want

[41:40] it. Nobody else and no jobs or anything.

[41:44] They are the sum of their learned

[41:46] experiences. even business. It grew from

[41:49] its experiences. You're now stepping and

[41:51] you see one particular aspect that turns

[41:53] you on and you think it's going to be

[41:54] like that until your boss gets fired

[41:57] into some other comes into the boss and

[41:59] I can't stand it. So you just get to the

[42:01] point where you're wise enough. You

[42:04] don't deny the positive experience.

[42:07] That's a very positive experience. It's

[42:08] really beautiful. But you're wise enough

[42:11] to look at it and you don't go running.

[42:13] All that glitters is not gold. they'll

[42:15] go running after it. But I found in my

[42:18] life and looking at others and stuff is

[42:20] if it's so strong that it sweeps you

[42:24] away.

[42:25] That's not beautiful in the sense that

[42:27] it's right. It's beautiful in the sense

[42:29] that you had no choice. So those people

[42:31] don't write me and say, "I got totally

[42:33] swept away. I'm madly in love. Should I

[42:35] pay attention to the person?" They don't

[42:37] write that. They they have no choice. It

[42:39] literally swept them away. Okay? There's

[42:42] a beauty to that. But it is for your

[42:44] teaching. It is not for you getting what

[42:45] you want. Life is Okay, here we go. Life

[42:50] is not about getting what you want. Life

[42:52] is not about getting what you want. Why?

[42:56] Because if you get what you want, it can

[42:58] change. If you get what you want, you

[43:00] can change. It's still conditional. This

[43:03] thing about getting what you want. You

[43:04] don't even know what you want. Why do

[43:06] you think so many that I rhyme all the

[43:08] time? I'm having trouble making a

[43:09] decision. I have an opportunity to move

[43:11] over here or do this by my career. Okay.

[43:14] Why are you writing me? Because I can't

[43:15] decide what to do. My mind keeps

[43:17] changing its mind. You see what I'm

[43:19] saying? All right. So, basically, what

[43:22] happens is if you're swept away and

[43:25] you're pulled with an energy, a positive

[43:28] energy, a reasonable energy. I'm talking

[43:29] about drugs or anything, but you're

[43:31] pulled with a reasonable energy. Okay?

[43:33] You're going to learn. You're going to

[43:35] learn you needed to go through that or

[43:37] it wouldn't have had that effect on you.

[43:39] And so, now you're going through that.

[43:40] And I'm sorry, you're going to find out

[43:42] it's not what you thought it was. It's

[43:44] not going to be. It can't be because

[43:46] you're the one who thought what you

[43:48] wanted. And they don't know anything

[43:49] about that. No matter what they tell

[43:51] you. All right. So, you go through the

[43:53] experience. That's what life is about.

[43:55] It's about learning. You're about

[43:57] changing, about growing. We just went

[43:59] from a, you know, a drug person with

[44:01] lowlevel energies and to somebody who's

[44:04] doing extreme stuff to try and get a

[44:06] rush. And now we come into more subtler

[44:08] things that I get what I want. There are

[44:10] some people that are only okay if they

[44:11] get what they want. Now we go higher and

[44:13] we sit there and say, "Well, something's

[44:14] happening to me that's pulling me,

[44:16] drawing me." People say all the time,

[44:18] "Is this God?" I can't answer you. Of

[44:21] course, it's God. It's all God. It's all

[44:23] God. That's all there is is God. All

[44:25] right? So, I'm not going to sit there

[44:26] and say to you, "Oh, if this must be God

[44:29] telling you to change your job and leave

[44:30] your wife and go to to Nepal." I'm going

[44:34] to do that and touch this stuff. Okay?

[44:36] You sit there and you look inside and

[44:38] say, "What's going on?" If it draws you

[44:41] and you go, I guarantee you, you will

[44:44] learn.

[44:46] You will go through experiences

[44:48] and you will have good experiences and

[44:50] bad experiences like you did before.

[44:52] Doesn't matter if you're in Nepal or in

[44:53] Hollywood trying your talents out.

[44:56] Nobody's telling you don't do those

[44:58] things. You just understand

[45:01] you're growing. You're following the

[45:04] path that's pulling you and you're

[45:06] growing through it. But you're not wise

[45:08] if you think this is it. Why? It's still

[45:12] conditional.

[45:14] It's conditional. If you get an offer in

[45:15] Hollywood and maybe you get all excited,

[45:17] it can be taken away or you could blow

[45:19] it or anything can happen. It's

[45:21] conditional well-being. All right. Well,

[45:24] what's higher than that? Okay. There's a

[45:26] thing called unconditional well-being.

[45:29] Unconditional well-being. It's not

[45:32] conditioned upon anything. It's just

[45:34] there all the time. Cannot betray you.

[45:37] Will not leave. What does that mean?

[45:39] When you catch on that the whole talk

[45:42] I've given you today is about the shocki

[45:45] managing to come up higher and higher to

[45:47] higher vibration rates. That's all

[45:49] higher vibrations. And as you did that,

[45:52] you work your way through the

[45:54] conditions. You learn, you become wiser,

[45:56] become more educated and so on. It's

[45:58] coming up wiser. And then what happens

[46:00] is you catch on. Wait a minute. It was

[46:03] never about the girlfriend or boyfriend.

[46:04] It was never about the food. It was

[46:06] never about the sex. It was never about

[46:08] the money. It was never it was about the

[46:10] shock.

[46:12] That's what it was. The only common

[46:14] feature there that I've talked to all

[46:16] night is if something opens you, the

[46:18] energy flows. And that's what you're

[46:20] liking. Even love. You sit down, you're

[46:23] so madly in love, you sit there opposite

[46:25] each other for hours with energy,

[46:27] literally energy pouring out of your

[46:28] hearts, binding into each other. Ever

[46:31] had it? All right. [laughter] Just

[46:32] feeding each other. That's really

[46:34] beautiful. All right. That is shockti.

[46:37] That is the energy finding its way to

[46:40] the fourth chakra and coming out until

[46:43] somebody burps.

[46:46] [laughter]

[46:49] That's real sensitive. that stuff I told

[46:51] you in an intimate moment and he's just

[46:54] you're so filled with love. You're

[46:55] melting to pieces and you just go

[46:57] [laughter] I love you so much. I can't

[46:58] even talk. I love you so much and

[47:01] nothing comes back.

[47:03] What do you mean? You know what I mean?

[47:05] And you're waiting. You're not supposed

[47:06] to be waiting. You're supposed to be

[47:07] blown away. Well, I was till I told him

[47:10] I loved him and he didn't say anything

[47:12] and I kind of nudged him and said,

[47:14] "Hey." He said, "Yeah, yeah. I love you,

[47:16] too." Whoa. Didn't work. He told you he

[47:19] loved you. You know they say how

[47:22] sensitive it is. So now what happens and

[47:24] there's the shift and that's what

[47:27] spiritual is. You reach the point that

[47:29] you realize

[47:31] I've been chasing experiences

[47:35] instead of experiencing the experience

[47:38] that I was trying to experience which is

[47:41] the flow of shaki the flow of the energy

[47:43] coming in of. And that changes your

[47:46] entire awareness of your path of what's

[47:49] going on. And now now you make much more

[47:51] rational decisions. Like I said, if it

[47:54] was legal, would you smoke? But when

[47:55] you're feeding off that shocki, you say,

[47:57] "No, why would I?" Right? I trade off

[48:00] something conditional for something

[48:02] unconditional. All right? And I'm not

[48:04] telling you what to do. You go through

[48:05] what you need to go through. Okay? If

[48:07] you're suppressing it because you think

[48:08] I said so, you didn't hear any of my

[48:10] teachings. Okay? But that doesn't mean

[48:12] I'm saying go ahead. All right?

[48:14] [laughter] You have to be wise enough to

[48:16] sit there and say, I now have I see this

[48:19] beautiful flow of shocki. All right,

[48:21] let's go to a nice topic. Love. We talk

[48:23] about love. So, you're in love with

[48:25] somebody and they do something that

[48:27] doesn't match what you want, but you're

[48:30] wise enough to realize you don't love

[48:33] them. You love what you feel in their

[48:35] presence.

[48:39] You don't love them. You love what you

[48:42] feel in their presence. How do I know?

[48:44] The moment you stop feeling that and

[48:45] they're present, you start looking for

[48:47] something else.

[48:48] So, you just wise and then you reach a

[48:51] point where that happens and for the I

[48:54] want to see the first time it happens.

[48:55] You look at you say, I can handle that

[48:59] they weren't what I expected. I ain't

[49:01] giving up the shock flow. I'm not giving

[49:04] up this beautiful energy that I feel

[49:06] inside because somebody didn't behave

[49:09] even my spouse or my kids the way I

[49:13] expected them to. And you start letting

[49:15] go of yourself. Well, now I told you

[49:18] this point in my teachings always

[49:19] happens to me. I read the Bible once in

[49:22] my life in 1971. I'm a nice Jewish yogi.

[49:25] All right. But I start talking like this

[49:27] and all of a sudden, what do you mean?

[49:29] There's an energy inside that's

[49:31] unconditional that flows all the time.

[49:33] No matter what happens, man live by

[49:36] bread alone, but by every word that

[49:38] leaveth of the mouth of God, there is a

[49:40] shocki flow inside that's unconditional.

[49:44] It's not based on the bread. The bread

[49:45] doesn't mean bread. It means the outside

[49:48] world coming in. And you get to the

[49:50] point where you say, "That's what I'm

[49:53] about." And then you realize, well, wait

[49:55] a minute. If somebody doesn't behave the

[49:56] way I want them to and I feel it start

[49:59] to close, I said, "Nah,

[50:02] I'm not going to close." Why? Because I

[50:04] don't want to give up the shock flow.

[50:06] Right? Then all of a sudden, you must

[50:08] die to be reborn. You have to die of the

[50:11] personal self, that one that is willing

[50:13] to close for anything. Period. in order

[50:17] to have that flow be unconditional. To

[50:20] have it flow up and stay up and it can

[50:22] flow up and it can stay up and it is

[50:24] unconditional no matter what goes on.

[50:27] The great masters reached a state where

[50:30] no matter what is going on outside it's

[50:32] not that they don't see it. It's that

[50:34] not that you don't see it. It's that

[50:36] you're so intoxicated with the inner

[50:38] flow that you don't judge it. And that's

[50:40] where judgment not be judged. like he

[50:43] who without sin throw the first stone.

[50:45] You understand that? All of it becomes

[50:47] these deep teachings which Christ

[50:49] taught. All right. So in any event,

[50:52] we've now reached a point that we

[50:54] started off by talking about is it okay

[50:57] to have an enjoyable positive

[50:58] experience. Well, you just got a heart

[51:00] full and a mouthful of of course it's

[51:03] okay. It's not about renunciation. It's

[51:06] about wisdom. And there are energies

[51:08] that can come in that help you, that

[51:10] feed you, that lift you. Don't get

[51:12] attached to them because they're

[51:13] conditional, but it doesn't mean you

[51:15] stop them. So, what's the moral of the

[51:17] story? There are things that can happen

[51:20] that cause the energy to open. Yes or

[51:22] no? Here's how a great being lives.

[51:26] Okay, I see it. Thank you. I really

[51:29] appreciate that happened. And you let it

[51:31] go.

[51:32] That was a very nice experience.

[51:35] There'll be others. I don't need to

[51:36] cling to it. I don't need to own it. I

[51:39] don't need to trap it and make it mine.

[51:42] Do you understand that? It's Yes. The

[51:44] energy comes in and you look at her and

[51:46] from a moment you try to grab, Buddhists

[51:48] call it clinging. For a moment you try

[51:50] to grab and if you're you're not there

[51:51] yet, but it's okay. Nice to hear beyond

[51:53] yourself, right? It comes in, you look

[51:56] at it, you lean back, you let it pass

[51:59] through. Why would I let it pass

[52:00] through? So that more energy can come.

[52:03] So the energy can learn to flow

[52:04] unconditionally instead of under your

[52:06] ownership. But most people don't

[52:09] understand the shiu flow. But you

[52:11] should. You're here. We talk about all

[52:12] right. You've had experiences how

[52:14] beautiful you are inside. Do the most

[52:16] beautiful thing that ever lived. But you

[52:18] hold yourself down with all these

[52:20] conditions. All right. So there's the

[52:22] final. I got there. The moral of the

[52:24] story is positive experiences are

[52:25] beautiful. Don't make them negative by

[52:28] trying to own them, by trying to cling

[52:30] to them, by trying to define them, by

[52:31] trying to keep them. Let it raise you so

[52:34] that it raises the whole of your being.

[52:36] Your mind becomes clearer, your heart

[52:38] becomes clearer, everything becomes

[52:40] clearer, more open, and you just get to

[52:42] the point where I ain't trading this off

[52:44] for anything. There's no way in the

[52:46] world. Period. But what if really dark

[52:48] times happen? Fine. Let the dark times

[52:50] happen. Who cares? If you're feeling joy

[52:54] and love and energy inside, it's

[52:56] unconditional. Let it get jobike. Let it

[52:59] get dark. Let it get this. Let it go

[53:01] just whatever. And you learn to let go

[53:03] of everything. It all passes through and

[53:06] leaves you as it found you. Intoxicated,

[53:09] high merge with God. All right. We had a

[53:13] very deep talk tonight. I hope you can

[53:15] [laughter] like I have never talked

[53:17] about this stuff like that before. So

[53:19] some people ask me what are positive

[53:21] experiences? Now it's a bigger topic,

[53:23] isn't it? It's a big topic. There is a

[53:26] very beautiful experience. It's called

[53:28] such.

[53:30] It's a name for God in the Indian

[53:32] culture. such and eternal conscious

[53:34] ecstasy. Eternal conscious ecstasy.

[53:38] That's who you are. That's what's in

[53:39] there. But you block it with all the

[53:41] rest of this stuff. All right.

[53:44] Thank you. Thank you. It's nice to talk

[53:47] about deep things in a jagrative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Singer uses the economic principle to explain that the more you get of something, the less you need or want it. He illustrates it with a chef who makes your favorite meal every night, until even the best dish becomes something you grow sick of. He argues that the senses adapt, so you need stronger stimulation to feel the same effect.
No. He notes that many traditional teachings warn against pleasurable things, but he distinguishes between sensations that simply feel good and experiences that carry a deeper positive effect. The concern is not joy itself but getting bound to shallow pleasures that demand ever more intensity.
According to Singer, the senses get used to repeated stimulation, so the same experience loses its power to distract or shock you out of your own mind. Novelty is what does the work, and once it wears off, the experience becomes ordinary. Feeling good then depends on finding something newer or stronger.
He means enjoying a good experience, learning from it, and allowing it to end without gripping it to keep it alive. The episode description says you can embrace love, success, and other positive experiences while letting them pass. The aim is to let them raise you rather than becoming dependent on them.
The episode suggests noticing the moments when you shut down because reality differs from what you wanted, and choosing not to close in those moments. Singer's framing is that unconditional well-being is available within you, not something granted only when conditions are right. Openness is a choice you can make even when outcomes disappoint you.
Singer describes primal, body-oriented pleasures such as taste, sight, touch, smell, and sound as the first category. Some of these are strictly sensory and have no positive lasting effect, which is why they can become addictive. The second category includes experiences that open you and draw your attention away from your inner noise, which he describes as the kind that can carry a higher energy through.
