Why Helping Professionals Struggle to Connect With Family

From Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji

Watch · 8

A counseling psychologist stands up at a microphone at the Oneness Abundance Festival and explains a problem most people would never admit in public. Working in Abu Dhabi as a school counselor, and seeing adult clients online, she can sit with almost anyone and help them. Her clients feel heard. Her own family does not get the same access. The moment a sister, a parent or an old friend needs her in a personal rather than professional way, she says, "a wall goes up." In a short Q&A video, Sri Krishnaji takes that wall apart. His answer runs through the Sanskrit idea of samskara, the ingrained impressions that shape how we react, and it insists that family cannot be treated as patients, that hurt is the real blockage, and that love awakens only when the heart is healed. The conversation then turns to a second questioner, a technology executive whose life has filled with abundance, and asks how to keep that abundance from becoming a trap. Both questions lead to the same place: what it means to move beyond roles.

The video runs about ten minutes and is built from auto-generated captions, so some words are garbled. What follows stays with what the teacher clearly says, and it tries to explain the logic behind it, not just repeat it.

Why can a helper connect with strangers but freeze with family?

The counselor's own description is precise. She can connect with people professionally. She can relate to them and help. Even at home, if a family member is stressed, "the psychologist version of me comes up and I can connect with them immediately." What fails is the other kind of relating: forming a plain, equal bond with people she already knows.

Sri Krishnaji does not treat this as a personality flaw. He treats it as a samskara, a pattern carved by repetition, in this case the pattern of the doctor and the patient. Her work has trained her into a position where she is listening, guiding and seeing impact. "You're also in a little bit of an authoritative position," he says, and that position is comfortable. It is the reason the helping role feels natural. Family, though, does not offer that position.

"Well, first of all, you must understand that your family are not patients. Yeah, they're family. So if you're trying to relate to them as patients continuously, it won't work out."

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (2:02)

There is a subtle point buried in this exchange. The teacher is not saying that counseling is bad or that helping is a disguise. He is saying that a role can become a substitute for presence. When every relationship arrives as a case to be solved, the person in front of you stops being a partner in a two-way exchange. Family, he says, is "like a two-way journey." You cannot lead it from behind a clipboard.

He also gives the counselor a way to recognize the pattern. Earlier in the same exchange he compares her to another attendee who is focused on everything being correct. Each person has a place where they feel most at ease and where they enjoy things most, and the rest of life can feel strenuous by comparison. For her, that place is helping. The task is not to abandon it but to notice what it is protecting her from.

What is the real blockage: samskara or hurt?

Here the answer becomes more pointed. Sri Krishnaji says that "one of the major reasons people don't connect with family is when they are hurt." The hurt is not always visible. It can show up as a negative samskara that keeps the person "constantly making sure that you're getting hurt." In his framing, that expectation becomes its own filter: you walk into a conversation braced for injury, and the bracing itself closes the door.

He is also refusing to hand the counselor a quick fix. He says he will bless her to discover the samskara, but she must do the discovering. "You have to observe and see what is it," he tells her. The method is self-observation, the patient noticing of a reaction as it arises, and freedom comes from seeing the pattern clearly enough that it loosens.

"Always within family hurts will not make you connect because family are masters in hurting each other. In fact they go for competition. You hurt me, I'll show you. I'll hurt you back."

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (4:59)

The teacher's account of family conflict is blunt and, in its way, recognizable. He describes legal fights, emotional fights, physical fights and verbal fights, with each side escalating until someone is "in ICU before dying" and everyone starts apologizing. He is not lecturing about families as a category. He is describing a mechanism: hurt begets hurt, and the cycle keeps the heart shut. This is why, in his words, the work is to "heal your heart," and why he suggests that family members attend these gatherings together, so that "everybody can heal and everybody can awaken to love and these massive boxing matches can stop."

"So become free of your hurt, heal your heart. That's very important. So that you can awaken to love."

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (5:39)

What makes this teaching useful beyond the counselor's situation is the way it reframes connection. Connection is not a skill you acquire through better communication alone. It is what remains when the hurt that makes you guard yourself is seen, and the habitual role that keeps you one step removed is recognized as a role. Sri Krishnaji's phrase for the goal is "effortless connection," which is what the counselor asked for in the first place.

Can you have abundance and still lose your way?

The second questioner shifts the frame. Her life, she says, "feels abundant" after experiences that brought her what she describes as miracles and shifts. Her question is how to keep from losing her way, and how to move from receiving to serving.

Sri Krishnaji's answer depends on a three-part structure he has been teaching at the festival, which he names as abundance, dharma and a third area that the captions render unclearly. His point is that abundance is good, but it has a shadow. "When you have too much abundance or good abundance and you're not awakened to your dharma, you will lose your way basically," he says. The drift he names is specific: into pleasures, meaninglessness, purposelessness, wrong relationships and wrong decisions.

"Wealth is a blessing that's coming to you which is a great blessing and I bless that it keeps coming. But your next step... should be to awaken to dharma. Why are you here on this planet? What is the purpose of your life?"

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (7:26)

He is clear that the blessing is not the problem. The problem is the gap between having and knowing what the having is for. That gap is where most people start to drift, and the teacher's advice is to close it with a question rather than a plan: what is your life for?

What are the four dharmas, and why isn't work the whole story?

Most people hearing the word dharma, Sri Krishnaji says, will think at once of work or business. He treats that as one aspect only. In his teaching, dharma spans four domains: dharma toward your work, dharma in your relationships, dharma toward your body and dharma toward Mother Earth. Each person may find that one of these is particularly strong, and that is where the next step begins.

"Normally if I say dharma all of you will be thinking about work or business but that is only one aspect. So in the Nova journey we go into dharma towards your work, dharma in your relationships, dharma towards your body and dharma towards mother earth."

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (8:03)

The four-part frame connects neatly to the first question. If relationships are one of the four dharmas, then the counselor's difficulty with family is not a side issue; it is part of her dharma. Her work-dharma is strong and her relationship-dharma is still forming. The teacher does not say this outright, but the logic of his answer points there.

He also describes how people usually arrive. Many come to his Nova program from India and abroad, and their first question is often what their dharma is. He says he tells them they already have one, and asks them to go deeper. On the second day, he says, many report that they have no dharma at all. "That's the journey," he says. The sequence is not a failure. It is the point where the easy self-description gives way to a real inquiry.

"I have my dharma already. I said very good let us go deeper into it. And second day is when they say we don't have any dharma. So that's the journey."

— Sri Krishnaji, in the video (9:22)

What does this teaching ask a reader to do?

Taken together, the two questions give a practical shape. The first asks you to notice where you feel most at home and to ask whether that home has become a wall. The second asks you to notice where abundance is pulling you without direction, and to ask what your life is for across work, relationships, body and the earth. In both cases, the teacher's method is inward: observe the samskara, heal the hurt, awaken to purpose. He is not offering a technique for managing other people. He is asking each person to become free of the pattern that keeps them from meeting others as they are.

The exchange is short, and it leaves a great deal unsaid. The teacher does not offer a therapy protocol, and he does not claim to know the counselor's specific samskara; he says it is for her to find. That restraint is part of the teaching. The video's real claim is that a helper's skill can hide an unhealed heart, and that the first step toward love is seeing that the hiding is happening.

Where to go from here

If this conversation landed close to home, the most useful next step is small and specific. Take one relationship where you feel a wall go up, and write down the moment you first notice it. Ask whether you are relating to that person as a role, as a patient, a helper, an authority, or as an equal. Then ask what hurt you expect them to deliver. That is the samskara Sri Krishnaji keeps pointing toward, and it is the place where, in his words, you "can awaken to love." If you are also trying to clarify your purpose, try the four-part frame: work, relationships, body and Mother Earth. Notice which one feels strongest, and which one you have been avoiding. Watch the full conversation to hear the questions in the teacher's own cadence, and to catch the parts the captions have made difficult to follow.

[0:03] You have to observe and see what is the

[0:05] samscara that is stopping you from

[0:06] connecting. Everything else seems to be

[0:09] a little bit more stressful. No,

[0:11] strenuous, not so comfortable and you

[0:13] have to heal from your hurts. You can

[0:16] awaken to love.

[0:16] >> Namaste Sri Krishna G.

[0:18] >> Namaste.

[0:20] >> My name is Na. I am from Dubai.

[0:22] >> From Dubai.

[0:23] >> G. Um, so I'm a counseling psychologist

[0:27] >> currently [clears throat] working as a

[0:28] school counselor in Abu Dhabi. Okay.

[0:30] >> And also I see uh clients online, adult

[0:34] clients online as well for counseling

[0:35] sessions. Um what I need guidance for is

[0:39] that um when it comes to my role as a

[0:42] counselor, my work in the helping

[0:44] professional, I can do it really

[0:46] wonderfully. I can connect with people.

[0:48] I can relate to them. I can help. All of

[0:51] that I can do. However, when it comes to

[0:54] connecting with people, relating to

[0:56] relationships, uh, family or, uh,

[1:00] people, new people, uh, making

[1:03] relationships with them,

[1:04] >> I feel a wall goes up.

[1:06] >> New people means you're saying partner.

[1:08] >> No, no, new people, friendships or

[1:10] networking or you know, community.

[1:13] >> So, only with your patience, you're able

[1:14] to relate well.

[1:15] >> Yes.

[1:15] >> Why they listen to you?

[1:17] >> Uh, no. I just feel that I'm helping

[1:19] them. So even with my family if I feel

[1:21] some compassion like they they're going

[1:23] through some concerns or stress the

[1:25] psychologist version of me comes up and

[1:27] I can connect with them immediately but

[1:29] when it comes to forming relations like

[1:31] my family connecting with them from a

[1:33] relations

[1:35] >> sense it's hard for me and it all goes

[1:37] up

[1:37] >> so I need guidance what can I do uh so I

[1:41] can connect with family and everyone uh

[1:43] and I also want blessing so I can come

[1:46] out of it

[1:46] >> okay

[1:47] >> and uh experience a state of effortless

[1:49] connection.

[1:50] >> I will bless you. Are you here for the

[1:51] first time or second time?

[1:52] >> My first time here for uh oneness

[1:54] abundance festival.

[1:55] >> Well, first of all, you must understand

[1:56] that your family are not patients.

[2:02] Yeah, they're family. So if you're

[2:04] trying to relate to them as patients

[2:06] continuously, it won't work out. You

[2:08] seem to be having a strong doctor

[2:10] samscara in you. Everybody seems to be

[2:12] patients, [laughter]

[2:15] which is okay. uh so understand that you

[2:19] are very very comfortable with people

[2:21] who are coming to get counseling from

[2:23] you and uh ultimately are listening to

[2:25] you and you know you're able to help

[2:27] them you're seeing an impact so uh

[2:30] you're also in a little bit of an

[2:31] authoritative position you know so

[2:34] that's nice but all that role is absent

[2:36] when you come to family is very

[2:38] different family you uh one can say it's

[2:42] like a two-way journey

[2:44] so uh you have to uh reflect upon what

[2:48] is stopping you from relating to family.

[2:51] Of course, you're able to again relate

[2:52] if they become a patient but then that's

[2:55] not nice. No. So you have a very uh very

[2:58] good samscara of um

[3:02] connecting to people from doctor patient

[3:04] relationship but you need to become free

[3:07] of samscaras that are stopping you from

[3:09] relating to family. That is something

[3:12] that you need to observe and become

[3:13] free. Just like we spoke about a

[3:15] gentleman yesterday correctness

[3:18] something correct where is he ah there

[3:21] so he is only focused on everything

[3:24] being correct no in the same way for you

[3:26] it is counseling helping that is your

[3:29] focus that is where you seem to be

[3:32] enjoying things a lot everything else

[3:35] seems to be little bit more stressful no

[3:38] strenuous not so comfortable

[3:40] uh and all this could be arising because

[3:42] of uh you are hurt with family,

[3:46] things not going the way you want it to

[3:48] go. So many complexities. Uh

[3:52] one of the major reasons people don't

[3:54] connect with family is when they are

[3:56] hurt. So a negative samscara that is

[3:59] constantly making sure that you're

[4:01] getting hurt. What that negative

[4:03] samscara is uh you should only uh

[4:07] discover. I'll bless you that you

[4:09] discover and become free of it. But you

[4:12] should discover and become free of it.

[4:14] Now you have to awaken to love.

[4:20] But observe and uh I'll bless you and

[4:22] see what is the samscara that is

[4:24] stopping you from connecting.

[4:28] You have to like in this case one of the

[4:30] things that is stopping him from corre

[4:32] connecting is the same samscara

[4:33] correctness that that is what is

[4:35] stopping him from connect connecting.

[4:40] So you have to observe

[4:42] and see what is it and I'll bless you

[4:45] that you find it out and become free of

[4:47] it and you have to heal from your hurts.

[4:51] Always within family hurts will not make

[4:53] you connect because family are masters

[4:56] in hurting each other.

[4:59] In fact they go for competition.

[5:02] You hurt me, I'll show you. I'll hurt

[5:03] you back. And then, oh, you are hurting

[5:06] me back. I'll hurt you back.

[5:09] Yeah. And then when they're in ICU

[5:11] before dying, they'll call everybody.

[5:13] Sorry. Sorry.

[5:15] I should not have done this.

[5:18] I should not have done that.

[5:21] But otherwise normally they fight.

[5:25] Lot of fight. Legal fight, emotional

[5:26] fight, physical fight, verbal fight. You

[5:29] name it,

[5:31] family does it. So that is why we want

[5:35] families to come and attend. So as

[5:36] families, everybody can heal and

[5:39] everybody can awaken to love and these

[5:42] massive boxing matches can stop.

[5:47] So um

[5:50] so become free of your hurt, heal your

[5:53] heart.

[5:55] That's very important. So that you can

[5:57] awaken to love.

[6:01] Namaste Shri Krishna G.

[6:03] >> Namaste.

[6:04] >> So I'm Kl Sani. I have come from Nasi.

[6:08] >> Nasi.

[6:08] >> Yeah. And me my husband we run an

[6:11] organization ESDS software solution. So

[6:13] we are into artificial intelligence. We

[6:16] have five data centers GPUs.

[6:17] >> Oh nice.

[6:18] >> Yeah. M

[6:19] >> so I have attended uh Bodhi earlier

[6:23] >> and had tremendous uh miracles like you

[6:26] know I've witnessed shift in my life it

[6:29] has been full of miracles.

[6:30] >> Okay beautiful

[6:32] >> so I expressed my gratitude and this is

[6:35] the first time I'm attending uh

[6:36] abundance festival.

[6:39] >> Welcome to the abundance festival.

[6:41] >> Mhm.

[6:42] So uh my question is now that life feels

[6:46] abundant

[6:47] >> how should I live so that I do not lose

[6:51] my way

[6:52] >> and I'm sure like you know after

[6:54] attending this festival many would be

[6:55] into that state of abundance but that we

[6:58] do not lose uh like you know our way we

[7:02] uh from receiving how do we shift from

[7:06] receiving to serving

[7:08] >> and from abundance to mti

[7:11] >> very good question So yesterday I was

[7:13] talking to please sit on yesterday I was

[7:14] talking to you about the three areas

[7:16] that we focus upon abundance

[7:20] dharma mti simple so when you have too

[7:24] much abundance or good abundance and

[7:26] you're not awakened to your dharma you

[7:28] will lose your way basically you will

[7:31] lose your way into pleasures

[7:33] meaninglessness purposelessness wrong

[7:35] relationships wrong decisions all this

[7:38] will start happening

[7:40] so the next step for you is to awaken to

[7:42] your dharma.

[7:44] You should awaken to your purpose in

[7:46] life. Wealth is a blessing that's coming

[7:48] to you which is a great blessing and I

[7:50] bless that it keeps coming. But your

[7:52] next step, your sadena should be to

[7:56] awaken to dharma. Why are you here on

[7:59] this planet?

[8:00] What is the purpose of your life? So

[8:03] when we speak about dharma, we go into

[8:05] four different aspects of life. Normally

[8:09] if I say dharma all of you will be

[8:11] thinking about work or business but that

[8:14] is only one aspect. So in the nova

[8:17] journey we go into dharma towards your

[8:20] work, dharma in your relationships,

[8:24] dharma towards your body and dharma

[8:27] towards mother earth. So you have to

[8:29] awaken to four dharmas

[8:32] and in in these four one of it could be

[8:34] very very strong.

[8:36] So that should be your next step and of

[8:38] course after that parallelly you can do

[8:41] tapus and become enlightened. So you are

[8:44] an enlightened

[8:46] dharma person

[8:48] and also an abundant person.

[8:52] >> So the purpose of our organization like

[8:55] you know the vision statement we have

[8:56] creating technologically advanced

[8:58] greener planet. So we wish to plant 1

[9:00] billion trees.

[9:01] >> Nice.

[9:02] >> So along with technology

[9:04] >> very good.

[9:04] >> Yeah. Very good.

[9:07] So when you come to Nova, you will

[9:09] understand that all this is not dharma.

[9:13] Okay. Yeah. But right now you can keep

[9:16] that as your dharma. Many people come to

[9:19] nova both India and abroad. And the

[9:22] first thing they'll ask me is Krishna G

[9:23] what is the dharma? I have my dharma

[9:25] already. I said very good

[9:28] let us go deeper into it. And second day

[9:31] is when they say we don't have any

[9:32] dharma.

[9:34] So that's the journey. It's a very

[9:36] beautiful journey. Uh but for now that's

[9:39] a good vision you have and

[9:43] when you awaken to your dharma

[9:46] this billion trees everything will

[9:48] become real if it is really your dharma.

[9:52] Yeah. Otherwise it will be a good idea.

[9:56] A good idea is very different from

[9:59] awakening to your dharma.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this video, Sri Krishnaji explains that a helping role can become a strong samskara, an ingrained pattern, that treats people as patients. Family is not a patient relationship, so the role fails there, and unhealed hurts can keep the wall up.
He uses samskara to mean an ingrained pattern or impression that shapes how we respond, such as a doctor-patient habit or a habitual expectation of being hurt. He says the person must observe and discover their own samskara, and become free of it through self-observation.
Sri Krishnaji says one of the major reasons people do not connect with family is when they are hurt, and that a negative samskara can keep a person expecting to be hurt. He describes family conflict as a cycle of retaliation, and says healing the heart is necessary before people can awaken to love.
He names four areas of dharma: dharma toward your work, dharma in your relationships, dharma toward your body, and dharma toward Mother Earth. He notes that dharma is often assumed to mean only work or business, and that one of the four may be especially strong for a given person.
Sri Krishnaji says that abundance without awakening to dharma can lead to pleasures, meaninglessness, purposelessness, wrong relationships and wrong decisions. His advice is to ask why you are here and what your life's purpose is, treating wealth as a blessing while awakening to dharma as the next step.
The video is a spiritual Q&A, not a clinical treatment guide, and Sri Krishnaji does not offer a therapy protocol. It offers a contemplative frame: observe your patterns, heal your hurts, and awaken to purpose. Anyone dealing with serious emotional distress should also seek qualified professional support.
