The Tree of Your Childhood: A Meditation on Belonging

From Rebecca Campbell

Watch · 6

Somewhere in your past there is probably a tree you climbed, sheltered under, hid behind, or watched from a bedroom window. On the first day of her free three-day Tree Experiment, teacher Rebecca Campbell asks thousands of people around the world to find that tree again in memory and in person. The video, titled "The Tree of Your Childhood Meditation," opens with her voice, a soft track playing behind it, and a view of a magnolia tree she has been working with in the lead-up to the event. Her premise is simple and open-ended: when many people intentionally listen to trees at the same time, do common messages emerge? What follows is a guided landing, a remembering meditation, and a homework assignment that sends people outside to sit with a living tree. The practice is quiet, but the idea underneath it is large: that a sense of belonging we have lost may be recoverable through a relationship we already had.

Why does a childhood tree matter in a spiritual practice?

Campbell does not begin with theology. She begins with a room full of people joining from Minnesota, Peru, Ohio, Scotland, Texas, Iowa, Vancouver and Los Angeles, and she names them one by one as they type their locations into the chat. That habit of acknowledgment sets the tone. The trees surrounding each listener are part of the room too, she says, and she asks people to imagine them.

Then she describes an ache. In the opening minutes she says many people may be here "because you know that the earth holds a wisdom that perhaps wasn't passed down to you," and that there has been "a little bit of a separation from seeing the sacred and communing with the consciousness, um the oneness of this planet." She is careful to frame this as a shared inheritance rather than a personal failing. Many people in the Western world, she suggests, have been severed from the earth-based traditions that sit somewhere in nearly every ancestral line.

The childhood tree is a way into that ache that does not require belief. Almost everyone had one. It was a place of wonder before we had words for wonder, and it often held us when the adults around us could not. By starting there, the meditation sidesteps the question of whether trees "talk" and asks instead what happened to our attention when we stopped visiting them.

How does the Tree Experiment work, step by step?

The structure of Day 1 is deliberate, and it moves from the body outward. Campbell calls the first part a somatic landing. Viewers are asked to slow the breath, shake out the body if they need to, stretch, or make a sound. Standing or sitting is fine. She says the goal is "allowing yourself to have the gift of being fully present here now." She frames the landing as the opening of "a resonant field which will hold us for the entire tree experiment," so the practice is meant to be a container, not a one-off exercise.

Only after that does she turn toward the tree. The guided meditation invites you to recall a specific tree from your past and then meet it "just as you are today." The question she poses in the description, which she repeats in spirit throughout, is what you might feel, remember or receive when that meeting happens. Campbell's invitation to bring the present self to the past tree matters. The tree is not being revisited as a nostalgic object; it is being approached as a living presence that knew you then and can meet you now.

She also talks through the physical texture of this kind of attention. Her teaching on tree connection, in the recording, includes sharing personal examples: a macadamia tree from her own past, and sitting beneath a large Sydney fig. In one passage she describes how a tree can "cradle you" and leave you feeling "really relaxed and supported." These are small, concrete images, and they give the practice a grounding that abstract instructions alone could not.

What is the field experiment, and why go outside?

The meditation is only half the assignment. After it, viewers are asked to go outside and connect with a tree near them, then record what they noticed in a Day 1 Field Note. Campbell frames this as "witnessing the trees," and she asks people to begin noticing how trees are woven into ordinary life: the air we breathe, the fruit we eat, the books we read, the places we call home.

That last point is a useful key to the whole experiment. Campbell says she has noticed, year after year, how people in modern life put enormous pressure on individual relationships to be everything for them, while the wider living world goes unacknowledged. Her own path, she admits, once separated the two: "I'm going to go and meditate now and be spiritual. Then I'm going to go get grounded in nature. Like it wasn't woven in." The field note is a corrective to that compartmentalizing habit. Instead of treating a tree as a meditation prop, you are asked to notice how your day already depends on trees.

She also acknowledges the practical side of connecting with trees. In one exchange she addresses how to approach a tree and whether it is respectful to touch one, a question that shows up repeatedly in the chat. Her answers are measured. The point is not to perform a ritual correctly but to build a direct relationship, which she describes as one that is open to "all levels of tree love" and all levels of experience. "You don't need any special abilities," the free event page says, "just curiosity and a willingness to listen."

"This is all about developing a direct relationship with the sacred that's all around us."

Rebecca Campbell, Day 1 of The Tree Experiment (video published October 2026)

What is the experiment actually testing?

The most interesting thing about Campbell's framing is that she refuses to promise results. "We don't know exactly what's going to happen," she says, "and that's what makes it an experiment." She is not asking participants to believe that trees send messages. She is asking whether, if enough people listen with the same intention at the same time, their reports begin to rhyme.

That is a rigorous instinct wrapped in a mystical setting, and it gives the three days a shape. Day 1 is about remembering. The event description says the following days will "listen to the trees and breathe with the trees," before the group gathers to compare what came up. Campbell's own hope is spelled out plainly: "Will we receive similar messages? Will common themes emerge?" Those questions are left open on purpose. A reader who arrives expecting certainty will not find it here. A reader who arrives willing to pay attention may find the experiment far more personal than they expected.

There is also a larger claim tucked into the video: that the longing many people feel for nature is not a private quirk. Campbell says she has seen "a lot of people felt the call back to nature" during the pandemic. She suggests that when relationships feel overloaded, part of what is missing may be the kind of holding that the earth once offered. This is an argument about belonging rather than about trees alone, and it explains why the childhood tree is such a potent starting point. It is the first place many of us felt held by something larger than our families.

How can you take this practice further?

If you want to work with this material beyond the video, the most useful move is the simplest one. Find the tree of your childhood in memory first. Name it as specifically as you can: its size, its color, the season you remember best, the place it stood. Campbell's guidance on the meditation pays attention to exactly these details, and the specificity is what makes the meeting feel real. Then, if you can, go to a living tree near you and sit with it for a few minutes without an agenda. Write down what you noticed, even if it seems small.

Keep the landing in view too. Campbell returns to the body throughout the session, and her opening practice is a reminder that the spiritual part of this experiment is not separate from breath, posture and the physical presence of the day. The tree you meet in memory and the tree you meet outside are both met through the same body.

Finally, hold the question lightly. Campbell's own language is curious rather than conclusive. "Come, come, sacred trees, come," she says at one point in the guided section, and the line works as an invitation rather than a claim. The Tree Experiment is an open door. What you bring through it, and what you hear back, is the data she is most interested in.

Where to go from here

Watch the full Day 1 recording to hear the meditation and the chat exchanges in their original order, and bring a notepad, as Campbell suggests. Then take your Day 1 Field Note outside, find a tree near your door, and begin noticing where trees already hold your life: in the air, in the food on your plate, in the books on your shelf, in the place you call home. The experiment is free, the requirements are minimal, and the question at its center is one most of us have been carrying for a long time.

[0:01] Hello.

[0:03] I'm so happy to be here with you all. I

[0:06] can see us all joining from all over the

[0:08] world. Loving it.

[0:11] Welcome to the tree experiment. I see

[0:14] lots of familiar faces in here.

[0:17] But if you're new, I'm Rebecca Campbell

[0:19] and I am so excited

[0:22] for this adventure that we're on. Day

[0:23] one of the tree experiment and um

[0:27] yeah, this really is um something I've

[0:29] been looking forward to. I know I was

[0:31] unwell last week, so we had to postpone

[0:33] it and so I've been

[0:35] yeah, really, really connecting with the

[0:37] trees in the lead-up. You can see my

[0:39] tree just out there, my magnolia tree

[0:42] that it's one of the trees I'm going to

[0:44] be working with this week. Um

[0:47] thank you, Corey. Yay, yay, yay. Well,

[0:51] let's get started. So, I just want to

[0:54] say how happy I am that you're here. Um

[0:57] this feels like a really exciting thing

[0:59] that we're co-creating and journeying um

[1:04] on together. Um

[1:06] want to acknowledge all of us from all

[1:08] over the world, Minnesota, Peru.

[1:12] Where else are we? Ohio, Scotland.

[1:15] Northern California.

[1:18] Where else are we?

[1:20] Yay, Minnesota, Texas.

[1:23] Wonderful. So good. Hi, Ena.

[1:27] Oh, Isla Papa, Iowa, Vancouver, LA. Just

[1:31] imagining and acknowledging all the

[1:33] trees as well that are surrounding us

[1:35] all.

[1:36] Um so, what we're doing this week with

[1:39] the tree experiment is really we're

[1:42] choosing to connect with the trees and

[1:45] listen. And this is why I'm so excited

[1:47] because at the heart of this experiment

[1:50] really is a question, which is when we

[1:53] intentionally listen to the trees,

[1:56] are they communicating something with

[1:58] us?

[1:59] And if thousands of us listen

[2:02] and connect at the same time,

[2:05] do common messages emerge?

[2:08] And so what excites me most about all of

[2:11] this is that we don't know exactly

[2:14] what's going to happen, and that's what

[2:16] makes it an experiment. So we really are

[2:19] um in this experiment together.

[2:22] I know many of you are long-time tree

[2:25] lovers. I definitely am. Um

[2:29] maybe some of you already talk to trees

[2:31] or plants. Maybe you prefer plants and

[2:34] trees to some people.

[2:36] Um maybe you have stood beneath a

[2:40] ancient tree

[2:42] um and you can feel that it's like an

[2:44] elder, and you could feel something you

[2:46] couldn't quite explain, but there was a

[2:49] shift that happens.

[2:51] Um maybe you've noticed that you just

[2:54] feel more calm and make clearer

[2:59] decisions um when you spend time with

[3:02] the trees.

[3:03] Um maybe you've noticed that you receive

[3:06] clearer guidance when you're walking in

[3:08] nature. Or maybe you just love trees and

[3:12] are a little bit curious to see what

[3:15] will happen.

[3:16] Everyone is welcome. All levels of tree

[3:19] love loveliness and all levels of

[3:22] working with trees are completely

[3:24] welcome. This is all about developing a

[3:28] direct relationship with the sacred

[3:30] that's all around us.

[3:32] Um so I want to note that um

[3:36] we um

[3:38] there's probably also a deeper reason

[3:41] why many of us are here. And we may be

[3:44] conscious to this or not conscious to

[3:46] it. So just staying open to the

[3:48] possibility. I wonder if any of you feel

[3:52] like you're here because

[3:54] you know that the earth holds a wisdom

[3:58] that perhaps wasn't passed down to you.

[4:01] Like there was a little bit of a

[4:02] separation from seeing the sacred and

[4:05] communing with the consciousness,

[4:08] um the oneness of this planet. Um and

[4:12] you've kind of ached and yearned for

[4:13] that. I know that's definitely me. Yep,

[4:15] I can see a lot of yeses there. I can

[4:18] see

[4:20] trees soothe my emotions. Yeah. My

[4:23] morning walk in nature heals me and has

[4:26] changed me. Yeah. Yeah.

[4:30] Yeah.

[4:31] Um perhaps some of us also, and I feel

[4:35] this increasingly actually. I've just

[4:37] written a a newsletter for tomorrow on

[4:39] this where

[4:40] we have this longing to feel more

[4:43] connected to the earth. Like there's

[4:45] this um yearning for a sense of

[4:48] belonging or home, for a place that we

[4:50] can't quite name that we yearn for, and

[4:54] we feel it when we're connecting with

[4:56] nature. Or we can feel the call when

[4:59] we're connecting with nature. Or nature

[5:01] seems like it's calling us because we

[5:03] have that yearning, that ache within us.

[5:07] Um I have really noticed increasingly

[5:11] year after year after year how in our

[5:14] society, we, particularly in the Western

[5:17] world, we we put so much pressure on our

[5:20] relationships

[5:22] to be everything for us. We're so

[5:24] separate, we're so isolated. Everything

[5:26] is compartmentalized. I know with me,

[5:28] with my spirituality, it used to be, I'm

[5:30] going to go and meditate now and be

[5:31] spiritual. Then I'm going to go get

[5:33] grounded in nature. Like it wasn't woven

[5:36] in. We'll be exploring a bit of that

[5:39] over the next 3 days as well. Um

[5:42] but it does seem like we put so much

[5:44] pressure on individual relationships.

[5:48] Um but we've become disconnected from

[5:52] the number one relationship that many of

[5:55] our indigenous ancestors, and if you

[5:57] track back, we all have indigenous

[6:00] um earth-based traditions in our

[6:02] ancestry, where before the separation,

[6:05] there was a a real connectedness to the

[6:09] pulse of life, to the sacredness in the

[6:12] trees, the consciousness of the planet.

[6:14] Um and

[6:17] more recently in the West, particularly,

[6:20] we have been separate from that, severed

[6:22] from that. And I think that many of us

[6:25] ache for that reconnection.

[6:28] And we will be exploring that a little

[6:30] in today when we're exploring the tree

[6:32] of our childhood. So, we'll get to that

[6:34] in a moment. Um

[6:37] But I think you can see during COVID, a

[6:39] lot of people felt the

[6:41] the call back to nature, the call of the

[6:44] trees. Yeah.

[6:46] Um and I do think that we put a lot of

[6:48] pressure on our

[6:49] our personal relationships as well, um

[6:53] to to meet us in the holding that Mother

[6:58] Earth once did. And so, if something

[7:01] within your heart, within yourselves

[7:03] kind of is saying, "Yes, yes, there's

[7:05] something there." Just paying attention

[7:07] to that. We will be exploring that today

[7:10] in particular.

[7:11] Um

[7:12] And maybe you also feel the call to

[7:15] connect with nature just because it

[7:17] makes you feel more alive. Like it feels

[7:19] magical, enchanted. I know when I walk

[7:21] through a woodland or a forest in

[7:23] particular, with the moss and the trees

[7:26] and the particularly if it's a network

[7:28] of trees, it's like, "Ooh, there is

[7:31] something alive here that is beyond what

[7:34] I can see, and I'm connecting in with my

[7:37] true nature through it." And we'll be

[7:39] exploring more of that tomorrow in

[7:40] particular.

[7:42] So,

[7:43] Lizette says, "I feel an ancient trees

[7:45] oracle coming." Perhaps.

[7:48] >> [laughter]

[7:49] >> Um I've done a lot of the other mystery

[7:52] school modules, like the the ancient

[7:54] stones and soul and many more rose, too.

[7:59] Um

[8:00] So, what we're going to need for today,

[8:03] we're going to dive in in just a moment

[8:05] into the our practice experiential part

[8:07] of today. Um what you're going to need

[8:10] is something to write with. Um you won't

[8:12] need that till a little later. Um you're

[8:15] also welcome to use the comments if

[8:16] you're part of VIP, um

[8:19] then you will be on Zoom so you can pop

[8:21] your comments in there. Um but if not,

[8:23] just have notepad [clears throat] and

[8:24] pen, um that will be great. Um

[8:28] and that is pretty much it. So, we're

[8:32] going to just land together now, um and

[8:36] where this is one of my tracks. I saw a

[8:39] couple comments on this. I always get

[8:40] comments on this. This is my arms of the

[8:43] mother track, which to me is like it's

[8:45] about the great mother holding us, the

[8:47] earth mother holding us. Um it's

[8:49] actually what I would hum to my kids

[8:52] when I when I held them as little

[8:53] babies. Um but I actually love this

[8:56] song. So, we're going to

[8:57] we're going to um open with that.

[9:00] Um so, I'll begin playing and then we're

[9:02] doing a practice called somatic landing

[9:04] where we're landing into our body,

[9:07] inviting our soul to plant ourselves

[9:08] here, and then we will dive in even

[9:11] further, okay?

[9:13] So, I want you to slow down your breath

[9:15] and just do whatever you need to to feel

[9:19] like

[9:20] you can land here in this moment. I know

[9:23] so many of us have really busy

[9:26] lives, busy days.

[9:30] But just allowing yourself to

[9:33] have the gift of

[9:35] being fully present here now.

[9:38] Deep breath in.

[9:41] Deep breath out.

[9:44] Landing together and we're going to open

[9:48] a resonant field which will hold us for

[9:51] the entire

[9:53] tree experiment.

[9:55] So slowing down your breath.

[9:58] If you want to shake off your body or

[10:00] stretch or do anything, let out a sound,

[10:03] whatever

[10:05] need to to really land

[10:07] in this present moment. You're welcome

[10:09] to stand or you can sit. Just really

[10:13] landing where you are, slowing down your

[10:16] breath, closing [music] your eyes if it

[10:18] feels good or keeping your gaze just

[10:20] gentle and soft.

[10:23] Look around the room, maybe turn your

[10:25] head left and right.

[10:27] If a yawn comes, [music] amazing. It's a

[10:30] sign of the nervous system regulating

[10:32] which the trees really help us with.

[10:36] Deep breath in.

[10:38] And out.

[10:40] >> [sighs]

[10:41] >> Letting gravity hold you now. Really

[10:44] coming to your senses. So even behind

[10:48] closed eyes [music]

[10:49] noticing

[10:51] what you can see,

[10:53] what you can hear, [music]

[10:57] you can feel, taste,

[11:00] >> [music]

[11:00] >> touch, smell.

[11:03] Deep breath in.

[11:04] >> [gasps and sighs]

[11:05] >> Head [music] and out.

[11:10] Just imagining a basket to your left.

[11:15] And anything that you're carrying,

[11:16] whether it's logistics, whether you've

[11:18] been rushing through the day meeting

[11:20] [music] to meeting,

[11:22] maybe you've not had your coffee yet

[11:24] if it's in the morning, but just [music]

[11:26] anything that you're carrying,

[11:29] just putting it to the side into the

[11:30] basket on the left now. [music]

[11:34] Landing into the container of your body.

[11:39] >> [music]

[11:39] >> Landing into the container of this

[11:42] movement.

[11:44] >> [music]

[11:45] >> Landing into the container of this

[11:47] session, session one of the tree

[11:50] experiment.

[11:51] >> [music]

[11:54] >> You might like to place your hand on

[11:56] your heart.

[11:57] >> [music]

[11:59] >> Really feel your connection with the

[12:01] earth beneath you. It's like you're

[12:03] dropping roots

[12:05] into the earth, meeting the trees around

[12:08] you.

[12:10] >> [music]

[12:12] >> And then just sensing all of us as if we

[12:15] are in circle together [music] now.

[12:20] Beautiful.

[12:22] And [music] sensing the person to your

[12:25] left, feeling their roots dropping

[12:28] [music]

[12:29] down into the

[12:31] earth, sensing their soul.

[12:36] Aw, beautiful.

[12:41] >> [music]

[12:44] >> Sensing the breath moving through them.

[12:48] >> [music]

[12:51] >> And together now, I want you to

[12:55] feel a light in the center of your

[12:57] heart.

[12:59] This light is your soul.

[13:02] Pulse of life, breath of life that

[13:05] exists within you.

[13:07] Ancient and wise.

[13:10] Inviting it to step forward now.

[13:13] >> [music]

[13:13] >> So unique.

[13:16] And then sensing that person on your

[13:18] left now, too. [music]

[13:21] Feeling their uniqueness.

[13:24] Their true nature.

[13:26] >> [music]

[13:29] >> Ah.

[13:31] >> And sending

[13:32] any quality [music] you're called to.

[13:34] Might be compassion, love,

[13:36] encouragement, witnessing

[13:38] >> [music]

[13:38] >> to them with your next breath.

[13:44] And with your next breath, [music]

[13:45] receiving

[13:48] these qualities from the person on your

[13:50] right.

[13:52] >> [music]

[13:53] >> Now sending your love and support to the

[13:55] person on your right.

[13:59] Sensing them,

[14:01] appreciating them.

[14:03] >> [music]

[14:05] >> And with your next breath, receiving

[14:07] these qualities from the person on your

[14:09] left.

[14:14] Now imagining a tree somewhere near you.

[14:18] You like me, you might be indoors and

[14:21] it's slightly outside. It's [music]

[14:22] raining today, so I couldn't be outside

[14:25] with you.

[14:29] Maybe it's [music] a tree right in front

[14:31] of you or above you.

[14:35] Just acknowledging it with your breath

[14:37] now, knowing that your breath

[14:42] is possible [music] because of it.

[14:48] Feeling us all [music] doing this

[14:50] together.

[14:52] Like a whole network of trees.

[14:55] Feeling [music] this subtle shift.

[14:58] Deep breath in.

[15:05] Lovely.

[15:08] And feeling your connection with the

[15:10] earth beneath you.

[15:12] Gravity holding you, wriggling your

[15:14] fingers and toes.

[15:17] And then looking around the room.

[15:20] And then perhaps if you

[15:22] are on Zoom with me.

[15:25] Connecting with someone.

[15:28] And if you're not connecting with the

[15:30] trees around us.

[15:34] >> [sighs and gasps]

[15:35] >> Oh, beautiful. Really feeling that shift

[15:37] in energy, which is so similar to when

[15:39] we allow ourselves to attune to the

[15:42] frequency and connection and the sacred

[15:45] that is in all living things,

[15:47] particularly the trees.

[15:50] And I really want to zoom out a little

[15:52] bit now and just share a little bit of

[15:55] the wider um

[15:57] the wider view of

[16:00] what this experiment is, like the

[16:02] landscape of this

[16:03] experiment, how what it sits within.

[16:06] Um

[16:07] and then we're going to move into our

[16:09] meditation.

[16:10] Um ever since I was young, maybe you are

[16:13] the same, but I have always been really

[16:16] obsessed and fascinated and curious

[16:20] about um what I would call like the big

[16:22] questions of life. Like who are we? What

[16:25] is the soul? How Why are we here? What

[16:28] is the sacred? What is that intelligent

[16:32] pulse of life that

[16:35] informs all living things, that invites

[16:39] the seasons to come and go, the moon to

[16:41] wax and wane, the tides to roll in and

[16:45] out, um us to age as well, um and and

[16:50] even like the flowers when to bloom.

[16:53] And to me, this is the greatest mystery

[16:57] that there is and it's captivated me,

[16:59] particularly over the past 10 years.

[17:02] Um

[17:03] and these really are the great mysteries

[17:06] of life, the things that we can't fully

[17:09] understand. And anyone who's been on the

[17:11] spiritual journey for a little while

[17:13] knows that the more we know, the less we

[17:16] know. And when you meet a wise person

[17:19] who's been on the journey,

[17:20] >> [sighs]

[17:21] >> you can tell because they are not

[17:24] certain of anything.

[17:26] But there's a holding

[17:29] that can be felt in their connection

[17:32] with this great mystery. Has anyone else

[17:35] felt that?

[17:36] Mhm.

[17:38] Beautiful.

[17:40] Yes.

[17:41] Mhm. Yeah, lots of resonance here.

[17:45] Mhm.

[17:47] Oh, I can't wait to see the trees that

[17:49] we all connect with. I can see many of

[17:51] you mentioning the tree that you're

[17:53] under right now.

[17:55] Yeah.

[17:57] Oh, so yeah, I've found that nature

[18:01] really is one of the most powerful ways,

[18:04] if not the most powerful way, of

[18:06] connecting with this great mystery, this

[18:08] great pulse of life. Whether it is

[18:11] through connecting with water,

[18:14] um whether it is connecting with ancient

[18:16] stones, trees like we're doing over the

[18:19] next 3 days, the flowers, oh, the rose,

[18:22] which is my favorite flower, which is

[18:24] such a symbol of the goddess and the

[18:26] sacred feminine, um the cosmos, um the

[18:29] moon, the stars, um and each each one of

[18:34] these mysteries, these these um really

[18:37] gateways to the sacred, offers us a

[18:40] different way of experiencing

[18:43] the sacred, experiencing

[18:45] the enchantment, the aliveness, the

[18:48] great mystery itself. And remembering

[18:51] that we are part of something way, way

[18:55] greater than ourself. And I think that

[18:57] when I'm feeling stressed and

[18:58] overwhelmed, it's part of why when I

[19:00] connect with the trees and nature,

[19:03] I feel more calm because I realize, oh

[19:05] my gosh, perspective. Like I don't have

[19:08] to just rely on my own will. I can

[19:11] surrender into a greater

[19:14] mystery, a greater intelligence,

[19:18] to nature itself as a life force, to my

[19:22] true nature.

[19:24] Um, and I do find that

[19:27] when you're in nature, you'll always

[19:29] find your true nature. And we'll be

[19:31] talking about that a little more

[19:33] tomorrow.

[19:34] Um, and so we can explore these

[19:36] mysteries through science, through

[19:38] history, through mythology, through

[19:41] folklore, ancient stories,

[19:42] [clears throat]

[19:44] um, wisdom traditions. And I love doing

[19:47] that. But for me, the most profound way

[19:51] of connecting in with the mystery and

[19:54] the sacred is, and I'm such a mystic

[19:56] here, it [snorts] is through going

[19:59] direct. So, um, direct experience. So,

[20:02] being in relationship, not just learning

[20:05] from the mind. It's amazing to learn

[20:07] from the mind, but to have an experience

[20:11] and be in relationship with the great

[20:14] mystery, with the sacred, with nature

[20:16] itself. Um, is the thing that has been

[20:20] the most transformative.

[20:22] Um, and I'm sure many of you have found

[20:24] that as well. Diana says, yes, this is

[20:27] awe.

[20:28] Absolutely. Yeah, awe allows us to zoom

[20:31] out and in all at once. Our breath is

[20:33] taken away

[20:34] >> [sighs and gasps]

[20:35] >> as we find ourselves connecting in with

[20:38] that intelligent pulse, in with our own

[20:41] true nature through attuning

[20:45] to the intelligent pulse that is in all

[20:47] of nature. And we, of course, are part

[20:50] of nature.

[20:52] Um,

[20:53] and so that's really what we're

[20:55] exploring together over the next 3 days.

[20:59] Um, and we are It was really hard for me

[21:02] to choose, like, one thing for us to

[21:05] experiment in with nature cuz I love the

[21:07] flowers as well. I love the stones. I

[21:09] love the consciousness of water. But the

[21:12] trees felt like the most accessible

[21:15] and

[21:16] I love how diverse they are. I love how

[21:20] we can all do it all at once and they're

[21:23] they're a network themselves. So that is

[21:26] what we're doing with the tree

[21:27] experiment.

[21:29] And yeah, for me trees have always been

[21:31] one of the easiest ways to connect in

[21:33] with nature and to experience the sacred

[21:36] in everyday. They're all around us.

[21:39] They're in our gardens, in our parks.

[21:41] They're Now I remember when I commuted

[21:42] in the city and I was basically in the

[21:45] middle of London city. There was barely

[21:47] any trees where I was

[21:49] but there was always a tree on every

[21:52] single block. You can always find them.

[21:55] They really are

[21:57] all around us and maybe you've connected

[22:00] with an ancient oak tree or maybe you

[22:03] have connected it

[22:05] like in an ancient wood or maybe you've

[22:07] connected with one like me when I worked

[22:10] in the middle of an jungle. They are

[22:12] always there and we need to protect them

[22:15] and now more than ever it's so important

[22:17] that we do.

[22:20] Trees really are our elders and our

[22:22] teachers. We can connect in with our

[22:24] entry nature but also

[22:27] ancient wisdom through connecting in

[22:29] with the trees. Of course many of them

[22:32] much older than us. So they've seen

[22:35] people like us come and go and

[22:38] they know how to embrace ever changing

[22:41] true nature as well.

[22:44] Yeah, Carol London's got some great

[22:46] parks with trees. I I love Regent's Park

[22:50] and

[22:51] Hyde Park. Oh, there's so many beautiful

[22:53] parks in London. So many beautiful

[22:55] trees.

[22:57] And yeah, when we begin paying our

[23:00] attention we realize how much of an

[23:03] impact trees actually already have in

[23:05] our everyday life.

[23:07] They're They allow us to breathe. So,

[23:09] they're in the air we breathe. Um the

[23:12] the tea we drink. I've got a tea here

[23:15] from a tree. Um the incense we work

[23:18] with. I'll be working with um

[23:21] And to do this, I've got some juniper

[23:23] from my garden and some cedar from my

[23:26] garden that I've dried for for incense

[23:29] with some berries. Um but they're also

[23:32] in resin. Like if you work with

[23:34] frankincense and other other um

[23:37] But

[23:38] here we go.

[23:39] Oh, great way to connect in with the

[23:41] sacred. Um but they really are all

[23:44] around us. They're in probably the bed

[23:46] you sleep in. Um incense on our altar,

[23:50] the fireplace that we warm ourselves

[23:53] with, the paintbrushes and pencils that

[23:56] we create with. When we open our eyes to

[23:59] the sacred that's all around us, that is

[24:02] is the relationship with nature that

[24:05] we're already in, we realize that the

[24:07] gifts and intelligence and connection is

[24:10] absolutely everywhere. It's just opening

[24:13] our eyes to see the sacred that's always

[24:17] here, has always been here.

[24:19] And I think this is so important

[24:21] particularly now when so many of us are

[24:23] feeling overwhelmed, bombarded with

[24:26] information, overstimulated.

[24:29] I know I am a lot. Um disconnected from

[24:33] the natural rhythms of life. You know,

[24:36] this is how we don't trust um

[24:39] our own inner seasons, the aging process

[24:42] even, seeing aging as an initiation in

[24:44] itself.

[24:46] Um spending time with trees, I know for

[24:48] me, regulates my nervous system. It

[24:51] slows me down. I'm able to receive

[24:53] guidance way more clearly. And I'm able

[24:56] to remember who I am. So, come back into

[25:00] resonance and harmony, right? And that's

[25:03] really one of the reasons why I choose

[25:05] trees um

[25:06] for this experiment especially because

[25:08] they're so accessible to so many of us.

[25:10] Um and I do believe as well like when we

[25:14] consciously connect with nature and the

[25:16] trees that are everywhere.

[25:18] Um

[25:19] um

[25:20] you just need to walk down the street

[25:22] and you can you can find one. Um

[25:25] the ordinary can then become enchanted

[25:28] again.

[25:29] We're able to see the sacred that has

[25:31] always been here.

[25:33] And we're able to connect in with

[25:35] ancient wisdom

[25:37] that perhaps we weren't taught how to

[25:41] connect with.

[25:43] >> [snorts]

[25:43] >> So, what we're going to do over the next

[25:45] 3 days starting today. Today, we're

[25:47] going to remember with the trees.

[25:49] Tomorrow, we're listening with the

[25:51] trees. And on our third day, we will be

[25:53] breathing with the trees. Um and each

[25:56] day I'm going to introduce you to a

[25:58] different way of journeying with the

[26:00] trees. Sometimes that we will be

[26:03] experiencing the practice together.

[26:05] And sometimes I'll talk you through it.

[26:07] So, I'll I'll kind of like teach you the

[26:09] practice. So, then you can go out and

[26:11] connect with the trees in real life and

[26:13] do it yourself. Um and um I'm going to

[26:17] be doing it myself as well. Um and so,

[26:20] after each each session, I really want

[26:22] to encourage you to um go out and

[26:25] connect with a tree. It might be a tree

[26:27] you're already in relationship with or

[26:28] it might be a completely new one. Um and

[26:31] really put what we're um experiencing

[26:34] together then into practice. There is

[26:37] nothing that can beat direct experience.

[26:40] And the deeper you develop a

[26:42] relationship with the trees around you,

[26:44] the more attuned to your true nature

[26:47] you'll become. And um

[26:50] the more um

[26:52] in a relationship

[26:53] with the great mystery you will be in.

[26:57] Um, so I want to encourage you to be

[27:00] curious and open and just see what

[27:04] happens. If you've been connecting with

[27:06] the trees for a very long time, maybe

[27:08] you'll have a different experience.

[27:10] Maybe you'll have a deeper experience.

[27:11] And if this is new to you and you're

[27:13] like, "Oh my god, I'm going to feel

[27:14] really silly just sitting there with a

[27:16] tree, meditating with a tree, or

[27:18] whatever."

[27:19] There's definitely ways of doing it

[27:22] without anyone knowing.

[27:23] >> [laughter]

[27:24] >> And I've spent many years doing that.

[27:26] Just like casually putting my hand on

[27:28] the tree, connecting with the tree while

[27:30] pretending I'm looking at my phone, for

[27:32] example. So if you're self-conscious,

[27:34] don't worry. But maybe you're out of the

[27:36] spiritual closet like me. Took me a

[27:38] while, but yeah, now I'm just like I

[27:40] just I'm free-range.

[27:42] >> [laughter]

[27:43] >> Um, and so yeah, what I want you to do,

[27:46] and this is what will really bring the

[27:48] experiment to life. Um, I want you to

[27:51] see yourself as like a a field worker, a

[27:54] kind of tree sacred tree researcher. Um,

[27:57] and so below this video you'll see a

[27:59] button that says submit your field note.

[28:02] And it's a super quick little kind of

[28:04] questionnaire where you can like you

[28:05] just put your answers, you document what

[28:07] your experience was, and then um, fill

[28:10] that out. Because what we're going to be

[28:12] doing at the end, um, next Monday, we

[28:15] are going to be gathering and I'm going

[28:17] to be sharing what we discovered. Um,

[28:21] when thousands of us all over the world

[28:23] connected with trees and listened to

[28:25] trees and breathed with trees at the

[28:27] same time. And so this really, really is

[28:31] co-creative. Um, if you don't see the

[28:33] button, I'll get my team to pop in where

[28:35] you can find it, but I know it's also

[28:37] going to be emailed to you. Um, so yes.

[28:41] So I'd also love if you're up for it, if

[28:44] you're a social media person. Um, oh

[28:47] don't worry if you don't know the name

[28:48] of the tree. There are some apps that

[28:51] you can do you can find the name of the

[28:53] tree. That's one of my favorite things

[28:55] to do.

[28:56] I think it's there's one called picture

[28:57] this.

[28:58] But then there's other kind of more free

[29:00] ones.

[29:02] Obviously, if you're you don't want to

[29:03] consume a plant unless you actually

[29:05] really know which plant it is. I'm not

[29:08] we're not consuming the plant at all

[29:10] during the tree experiment. But yeah,

[29:13] but yeah, you could give it a name or

[29:14] you can you could ask someone who knows

[29:17] what that tree is. Take a photo of its

[29:19] leaves and then yeah, that's you

[29:21] developing a relationship with the with

[29:22] the tree too. Yeah, Katrina says Google

[29:25] Lens works too.

[29:27] Um

[29:28] So, yeah, if you

[29:31] like taking photos and share on social

[29:33] media, I'd love you to tag me in your

[29:35] picture if you're up for it. I'm Rebecca

[29:37] Campbell

[29:38] author

[29:40] and do the hashtag the tree experiment

[29:43] because then I'll I'll reshare it and

[29:46] then we can kind of be connected and

[29:47] just see all the different trees all

[29:49] around the world that we are connecting

[29:50] with.

[29:52] Yes.

[29:54] And so yeah, the field notes will help

[29:55] us gather our findings. The social posts

[29:57] will essentially connect us in together.

[30:00] And then we will gather together again

[30:03] and receive the findings and wisdom from

[30:06] the trees on day four which is next

[30:09] session four which is which is next

[30:11] Monday.

[30:13] So, I can't wait to see what we discover

[30:15] together

[30:17] and really want to encourage you to get

[30:19] out there and and enjoy your connection

[30:22] with the trees and be open to seeing

[30:25] what you discover. You might be like me.

[30:28] I tend to receive a lot of my

[30:31] creativity when I'm connecting with

[30:33] nature.

[30:34] So, you might find a poem comes to you.

[30:37] You might find that

[30:40] a substack article just like rolls all

[30:43] the way in and just staying open to that

[30:45] and particularly tomorrow where we're

[30:47] doing a Celtic practice called kithing,

[30:50] which is how I write all of my books and

[30:53] it has been through connecting with

[30:54] nature. Um, which I'll tell you a little

[30:56] bit about a bit about in a moment. Um,

[30:59] so

[31:00] let's just talk about and I want you to

[31:02] I'm going to share a little bit about

[31:04] my journey with the trees and

[31:08] I want you to reflect on yours as I'm

[31:11] sharing it as well. So

[31:14] for me I feel really grateful that I

[31:16] grew up in as a generation as part of a

[31:19] generation that was still largely

[31:22] connected with nature. Like phones

[31:24] didn't mobile phones didn't really come

[31:26] in until right at the end of my high

[31:28] school. Like I didn't have I think I had

[31:30] I don't think I had one when I was at

[31:31] school. It was at university. And so I I

[31:34] just got in like you know, I was in the

[31:36] generation where we climbed trees

[31:39] and growing up in Australia that was

[31:42] such a big part of my childhood as was

[31:44] nature as well. I remember one tree, a

[31:48] macadamia tree that was at my

[31:50] grandparents house, my mom's

[31:52] parents at Lambie in Sydney and I used

[31:56] to climb that tree and I used to gather

[31:59] nuts with my grandpa Bill and he had a

[32:02] nutcracker and we would crack the nuts.

[32:04] I'd need his help cuz I wasn't strong

[32:06] enough and we'd eat the nuts and roast

[32:08] the nuts and such a fond memory and

[32:10] there's so many layers to that memory.

[32:13] Um, one of my memories that I I posted

[32:16] about on Instagram today

[32:19] was I remember in in primary school

[32:23] like early primary school in infants. I

[32:26] used to play hide and seek or tip and I

[32:29] was a very fast runner and so I would

[32:31] like go and hide and I'd I'd I was a

[32:34] good hider as well. So I would hide um,

[32:36] take refuge behind this paper bark tree.

[32:39] And I don't know if you guys have seen

[32:41] paper bark trees, but they are amazing.

[32:45] Um, and I remember, um,

[32:48] really slowly like peeling off the paper

[32:52] thin it's like tissue thin bark, it's

[32:55] like powdery, off that tree and just how

[32:59] tactile it was and the smell and I'm

[33:02] still taken back. And I think as well

[33:05] for me, um,

[33:07] the smell that takes me back to my

[33:08] childhood the most is, um,

[33:12] the eucalyptus tree. I actually have a

[33:14] eucalyptus where I live now. I'm on the

[33:16] other side of the planet from Australia,

[33:18] but that was like such a beautiful

[33:19] moment for me seeing that tree. It was

[33:22] planted like 40 years ago and it's a

[33:24] massive cuz they grow so much. But yeah,

[33:28] outside my bedroom window I had a tree,

[33:30] eucalyptus tree, and it's massive now,

[33:33] um, at my parents' house. They still

[33:35] live there and that smell of the

[33:37] eucalyptus it just brings me back to my

[33:40] childhood.

[33:42] And looking back I really realized that

[33:44] trees have become such deep companions

[33:49] in my life without me really realizing

[33:51] it. And what I found is so many of us

[33:54] has that, um, experience as well.

[33:58] When I was, um,

[34:01] went to university and then I, um,

[34:03] I had one of my first jobs out of, um,

[34:06] um, of university and I was working as a

[34:08] a creative. Um, my job was literally to

[34:11] come up with, um, ideas. And so creative

[34:13] [clears throat] ideas. This is I think

[34:15] when I started really realizing

[34:18] how powerful trees are and nature is,

[34:22] that connection with nature to our true

[34:24] nature for receiving intuition and kind

[34:27] of channeling creative ideas, words,

[34:30] poetry. I wonder if anyone's had that

[34:33] experience, too. Oh my god, I'm seeing

[34:35] some amazing trees here

[34:37] um

[34:38] on Zoom

[34:40] in the chat. Oh, I'm getting distracted

[34:42] by all this tree porn. I love it. Um

[34:47] but yeah, I remember going um

[34:50] to Hyde Park. So, my office was on Park

[34:53] Street, if anyone knows Sydney. And so,

[34:54] it was like just one block away. And I

[34:57] used to spend my lunch breaks actually

[35:00] sitting beneath this amazing Sydney fig

[35:03] tree. Oh my gosh, the roots were like

[35:06] literally it was like a bed I would sit

[35:08] into and I'd like I'd kind of like like

[35:11] go right back and rest in. And um

[35:15] really it was through being cradled in

[35:17] those roots. I'd have my my notebook and

[35:19] I'd do lots of boxes, that was my

[35:21] process, and I would fill the page with

[35:24] um different ideas, creative ideas, and

[35:26] I'd connect and eventually after a

[35:28] little while I realized, "Oh, I can do

[35:30] this so much more in nature." And so,

[35:32] I'd connect with the great mystery, I'd

[35:35] connect in with my muse, and I'd connect

[35:37] in with the consciousness of the trees

[35:39] around me to um channel ideas that were

[35:42] ready to come. Um

[35:44] and so, so much of my creative process

[35:47] has been supported by that one

[35:50] particular tree. Um but then also I

[35:52] remember when I moved to London um and I

[35:55] began um I wonder if there's anyone old

[35:59] school who really connected with me

[36:01] early on, like

[36:03] must be getting on like 18, 20 years

[36:05] ago. Um

[36:07] when I first started teaching spirited

[36:09] sessions. Um and and I would do that

[36:12] with my friend uh Robin Silverton. We

[36:15] actually connected in um an an intuition

[36:18] training and then decided to create and

[36:22] run these monthly spiritual workshops,

[36:24] really. They were like community

[36:26] gatherings called spirited sessions. Um

[36:28] and there was a particular tree we would

[36:30] meet in Regent's Park um under a tree

[36:33] and I need to go there and then work out

[36:36] what type of tree it is cuz I I don't

[36:38] know the type of tree, but I know what

[36:39] it looks like. And it was very unique

[36:42] and we called it the spirited tree and

[36:44] we would meet under the spirited tree

[36:45] and that's where we would plan our

[36:47] workshops and bring in and write our

[36:49] meditations and and soul inquiries and

[36:52] it's really where my my my workshops and

[36:55] my my facilitation began under that tree

[36:59] with Robin. Oh, and what an amazing tree

[37:02] in Bulgaria, birch, yes. Oh, I love the

[37:05] white and the I love I love with birch

[37:08] how like silvery it can be with the with

[37:12] the the the the roughness as well. Oh,

[37:15] love birch.

[37:16] Um there's also a tree here in

[37:18] Glastonbury that I connect with and if

[37:20] you've come on a retreat with me, you

[37:22] may have met this tree. Um it is um it's

[37:26] known as the grandmother lime tree. Now,

[37:29] that it's not a lime tree. It's a that's

[37:31] kind of an ancestral European ancestral

[37:33] name for the linden tree. And so it has

[37:37] these beautiful flowers, but it's this

[37:39] really really old tree. I was introduced

[37:41] to it by

[37:42] um someone who does tree pilgrimages

[37:44] here in Glastonbury and it's one of the

[37:46] oldest trees in Glastonbury and to me I

[37:49] guide my groups there to connect with

[37:51] her. I mean, she is so grand and her

[37:56] branches just like

[37:58] reach out and they're just like they

[38:00] cradle you and you can you don't even

[38:02] need to touch her to to feel it. You're

[38:04] just like looking at her majesty.

[38:07] And to me, she really does represent the

[38:09] gateway into Avalon from Glastonbury.

[38:12] Um and then now as a mom, my favorite

[38:15] way of connecting with the trees is

[38:17] really to um

[38:21] connect with my kids. I really more than

[38:23] anything, want my kids to grow up

[38:25] knowing they're not separate from

[38:27] nature. And so, my favorite thing to do

[38:29] with them is to name the tree, or we

[38:33] even have like a little altar in my tree

[38:36] at the back here, my acacia, um which is

[38:38] like the the the tooth fairy um tree,

[38:41] where we leave the the tooth, and then

[38:44] like they tree gifts arrive for them.

[38:47] And so, we're creating our own

[38:49] traditions as well with the trees.

[38:52] Okay. So,

[38:54] I think it's time for us to dive into

[38:57] our meditation now. So,

[38:59] I want you to do whatever you need to to

[39:02] feel really relaxed and supported.

[39:06] Um

[39:08] just slowing down your breath, and

[39:13] dropping in now. I'm going to put on

[39:15] some music.

[39:19] And

[39:20] if you want to yawn, doing that.

[39:23] But really consciously connecting in

[39:25] with the trees around you, near you now.

[39:28] Deep breath in.

[39:32] Deep breath out.

[39:35] Lovely.

[39:37] We're going to begin placing your hand

[39:39] on your heart.

[39:42] And I want you to consciously connecting

[39:46] with the trees and the spirits of the

[39:48] land where you are, known and unknown.

[39:51] Acknowledging the custodians of the

[39:53] land, and if you know who they are,

[39:56] feeling free to whisper their names now.

[40:02] And then repeating this

[40:04] after me,

[40:06] a sacred tree invocation.

[40:10] Come, come, sacred trees, come.

[40:14] Come, come, sacred trees, come.

[40:17] Wise ones,

[40:19] beloved elders, you who were present

[40:22] long before me, and you who will

[40:24] continue

[40:26] long after [music]

[40:27] I have gone.

[40:32] I acknowledge you,

[40:34] I remember you, and I call upon you

[40:39] to be one of my guides.

[40:43] I'm open to receiving your grounded

[40:45] wisdom

[40:47] and support

[40:50] as I journey with you.

[40:54] Ready to surrender

[40:57] to my ever-changing true nature

[41:02] and return again and again

[41:06] back to the earth,

[41:09] back to myself. [music]

[41:11] Deep breath in.

[41:13] >> [gasps]

[41:14] >> And breathing out.

[41:18] Hey.

[41:20] If you want to close your eyes, feel

[41:21] free to do that now if they're not

[41:24] already.

[41:24] >> [music]

[41:25] >> Really allowing yourself to settle,

[41:28] to drop those roots deeper and deeper,

[41:32] meeting the trees around you.

[41:38] Breathing deeply,

[41:42] and acknowledging the breath made

[41:44] possible because of the trees.

[41:51] And now I want you to

[41:54] I want to invite you to imagine yourself

[41:58] walking along a path.

[42:04] This is a path that leads you towards a

[42:07] tree

[42:09] from your childhood, maybe one that you

[42:11] already know, or maybe you're going to

[42:13] be surprised. [music]

[42:16] Either from your childhood or

[42:19] an early memory of your life.

[42:25] >> [music]

[42:25] >> Just imagining yourself walking along

[42:27] this path now.

[42:32] And you're just seeing the landscape

[42:33] [music] around you.

[42:37] Maybe it's somewhere familiar.

[42:41] Maybe it's somewhere you haven't visited

[42:43] for many years.

[42:49] Just noticing whatever comes. It might

[42:52] be a knowing,

[42:54] symbol, a memory,

[42:58] a sense of a visual in your imagination.

[43:01] Maybe

[43:03] you hear sounds or smells.

[43:17] Following the path

[43:20] towards the tree [music] from your

[43:21] childhood.

[43:30] As you continue [music] walking, you

[43:32] begin to

[43:34] notice

[43:35] a tree from your childhood in the

[43:37] distance.

[43:44] Tree that you recognize.

[43:51] Tree that is calling [music] you to

[43:53] connect or reconnect with it today.

[44:02] Just noticing what it feels like to

[44:05] >> [music]

[44:05] >> connect with this tree again.

[44:13] You just saying

[44:18] how big the tree is, the colors of the

[44:21] tree, the leaves, the trunk.

[44:25] Maybe it has nuts or fruit.

[44:29] Maybe it has flowers or

[44:32] maybe has leaves or maybe the leaves are

[44:34] completely bare.

[44:37] Notice what [music] season it's in.

[44:48] Noticing [music] its branches, its

[44:50] roots.

[44:53] Its texture.

[44:55] >> [music]

[45:03] >> And then approaching the tree, just

[45:05] trusting what you're called to do. Maybe

[45:07] you want to connect [music] with the

[45:08] tree by placing your hands on its trunk

[45:12] or maybe you want to

[45:14] sit with your back

[45:16] resting on it.

[45:17] Your forehead and your palms resting on

[45:20] its trunk. [music]

[45:25] Just taking a moment to really

[45:27] acknowledge and greet this tree.

[45:29] >> [music]

[45:29] >> Like it's a reconnection that's

[45:31] happening.

[45:40] >> [music]

[45:55] >> And just noticing what it feels like to

[45:58] be in the [music] presence of this tree.

[46:10] You're really consciously

[46:12] connecting [music] with the tree.

[46:17] So, you [music] can stay as you are or

[46:19] you might want to climb the tree or lay

[46:22] underneath the tree looking up at it.

[46:25] Just trusting what you're called to do.

[46:30] Connecting with [music] the tree of your

[46:32] childhood.

[46:39] Just imagining your heart opening to the

[46:43] presence of this living being.

[46:50] Breathing in the air that's offering

[46:51] you.

[46:56] Noticing what you feel, sense, and

[46:59] smell.

[47:14] Now, if you want to

[47:18] if you have a particular question for

[47:20] the tree, an area of your life

[47:24] that you have a question on, you're

[47:25] welcome to

[47:27] whisper that [music] now.

[47:36] Just tuning into the tree.

[47:42] And if this tree could speak to you now

[47:44] or transmit a message to you now,

[47:48] what would say?

[47:53] If this tree could [music] speak to you

[47:54] now,

[47:56] what would it say?

[48:15] If this tree [music] could speak to you

[48:17] right now, give you a message, what

[48:19] would it say?

[48:54] What does this tree want you to know?

[49:08] And just really receiving

[49:12] this connection [music] with the tree.

[49:18] Feeling its presence.

[49:22] Resting here, receiving from the tree.

[49:27] Noticing of emotions.

[49:31] Occurs, [music] totally fine.

[49:35] Deep breath in.

[49:39] Deep breath out.

[49:53] And thanking the tree

[49:58] for this

[50:00] connection.

[50:07] As you rest here, just

[50:10] noticing if there's a particular quality

[50:12] or wisdom that this tree is offering you

[50:14] today. [music]

[50:15] Maybe it's even a memory

[50:18] of your true nature,

[50:21] of your aliveness,

[50:26] of who you truly are.

[50:41] Perhaps feeling that yearning

[50:45] for connection with nature,

[50:49] and what it feels like to be in

[50:50] connection

[50:53] with nature.

[50:57] Maybe it feels sweet and heartening and

[51:02] healing.

[51:04] Maybe there is a subtle grief,

[51:07] tenderness, a compassion,

[51:10] a yearning, a longing

[51:14] that's also present. So often

[51:16] two things can happen at once.

[51:20] A yearning

[51:23] and a healing and a meeting,

[51:26] an aliveness and enchantment,

[51:30] and a longing.

[51:44] I'm thanking the tree for this

[51:45] connection knowing you can

[51:48] return

[51:50] to it [music] whenever you like cuz the

[51:52] connection already exists.

[51:56] I'm whispering, thank you, thank you,

[51:57] thank you.

[52:02] And then when you're ready

[52:05] wriggling your fingers

[52:07] and toes.

[52:09] Take another deep breath in.

[52:12] >> [gasps]

[52:12] >> Appreciating

[52:14] the breath of life. [music]

[52:17] Mhm.

[52:21] And then opening your eyes if they were

[52:23] closed and looking

[52:26] around where you are, noticing what you

[52:28] notice. Maybe

[52:30] there's a tree near you

[52:32] that you can

[52:34] connect with right now. Beautiful Dana

[52:37] that

[52:39] lovely Aleppo pine. Gorgeous.

[52:43] Aw, lovely.

[52:46] Um

[52:48] And then either in the comments or feel

[52:50] free to jot it down if you didn't

[52:52] already.

[52:56] If you were If the tree of your

[52:58] childhood could speak to you right now,

[53:00] what would it say? So this is the prompt

[53:01] that we just did. What message did the

[53:04] tree [music] have for you?

[53:06] The tree could speak to you right now,

[53:08] what would it say? [music] I saw some

[53:09] beautiful ones coming in earlier.

[53:12] What would the tree say?

[53:15] Feel free to pop it in. We are stronger

[53:17] together. Relax, you're safe with me.

[53:20] Return to nature. I'm on the right path.

[53:25] My childhood dog joined me under the

[53:27] tree. The walnut tree next to me started

[53:30] dropping a bunch of walnuts. Yay!

[53:32] They're all connected just like me.

[53:35] >> [music]

[53:35] >> You belong. You are seen. You are loved.

[53:38] Time for a fruition. Yes.

[53:41] Life and death [music] are the same

[53:43] things. Yes, Katie.

[53:45] Come be with us. Come be us.

[53:49] Beautiful.

[53:52] We could tell you were a witch. We all

[53:54] knew you were one of us. I love that.

[53:58] Uh when it's time to let go,

[54:01] let it all release to the wind. Yeah.

[54:05] Your soul's roots [music]

[54:07] are connected with mine. Mm.

[54:10] We love to see you grow. You were loved.

[54:16] Find yourself through nature [music] and

[54:18] follow the path.

[54:21] Everything is transitionary.

[54:24] And the past no longer holds power over

[54:26] your future. and cyclical.

[54:30] [music]

[54:32] Mm.

[54:34] Mm. And let me know what your

[54:37] >> [music]

[54:37] >> what your tree was. Do you know what

[54:40] tree it was? So many amazing poems here

[54:44] I can see coming in.

[54:47] A weeping willow, an acacia.

[54:50] Mm.

[54:51] Crabapple, pecan.

[54:54] Lemon tree, mimosa, cherry tree. [music]

[54:58] Pine.

[54:59] Weeping willow. Aw. Douglas fir.

[55:04] Birch.

[55:05] She helped me cry and heal. Yeah.

[55:07] [music] Red cedar, oak, olive tree,

[55:10] orange tree, aspen. Mm.

[55:13] Maple.

[55:15] Beautiful.

[55:17] Aw. So lovely.

[55:21] Yeah, keep sharing in the comments if

[55:23] you want to. And

[55:25] yeah, I want to see your trees. If you

[55:27] have a picture of your tree from

[55:28] childhood, definitely [music]

[55:31] do a story and tag me in it or tag the

[55:35] tree experiment. Um

[55:38] yeah.

[55:40] So,

[55:41] I want to

[55:44] connect in [music] now as we

[55:47] almost have finished. Um

[55:51] I want as we be begin to wrap up today,

[55:55] I want to invite you into our first

[55:57] [music] field experiment, which is

[55:59] called witness the trees. And this is a

[56:02] very simple experiment, very simple

[56:05] exercise, but do [music] not

[56:07] underestimate the power of it. This one

[56:10] completely changed my life.

[56:12] Um so, today I want to invite you to go

[56:15] outside and [music] spend some time with

[56:17] the tree near you. Might be a tree in

[56:19] your garden, a local park, or one that

[56:21] you pa- pass every day.

[56:24] And take a moment to really notice it.

[56:26] >> [music]

[56:27] >> So, maybe you can find out what tree it

[56:29] is, learn its name, begin greeting it

[56:31] like a friend. [music]

[56:33] Um and like let it see you, too. So,

[56:36] connect with the tree, but also

[56:39] >> [music]

[56:39] >> this is a step two of witnessing the

[56:41] trees, and this is where the real power

[56:42] comes. As you move through the rest of

[56:45] the day, I want you to notice the trees

[56:49] around you all the gifts that the trees

[56:51] have [music] offered us. Um so, being in

[56:54] relationship with the trees because

[56:57] you'll find that they're absolutely

[56:58] everywhere. So, [music]

[57:00] obviously here in my resin and my

[57:03] incense,

[57:04] >> [music]

[57:04] >> they're here with my essential oils.

[57:07] They're um I'm saying all around me that

[57:10] my desk is [music] is made from a tree.

[57:14] I have a old yew tree that that um it

[57:18] died, and so we created these these um

[57:20] tables from its trunk.

[57:22] >> [music]

[57:22] >> Um so, really noticing the trees that

[57:24] are around you, the pencils, the

[57:26] paintbrushes. And every time you see

[57:28] something, might be your kitchen table,

[57:31] your salad bowl, I want you to take a

[57:34] moment and acknowledge

[57:36] >> [music]

[57:36] >> the connection, being in relationship

[57:39] with it by saying thank you. Thank you,

[57:41] trees. Thank you. Thank you. And and

[57:43] perhaps if you know what tree it was,

[57:45] you can acknowledge that as well.

[57:48] You know, what happens when we begin

[57:49] paying attention to the trees

[57:51] >> [music]

[57:51] >> and and their offerings in this way?

[57:55] I want to I'm curious [music]

[57:58] with your experience as well as mine.

[58:00] It's like, what happens when we really

[58:03] enter into a relationship with the

[58:05] trees? Yeah, baskets, a log bed. Oh, I

[58:09] can see a um play equipment there. Mhm.

[58:13] Joanna I cried remembering my tree child

[58:16] tree. She's no longer living. I felt

[58:18] such tender grief and gratitude for her

[58:20] in my place her place in my life. Yeah.

[58:23] Trees can be anchors for so much for us.

[58:27] Um and it's so easy to overlook it.

[58:30] >> [music]

[58:30] >> Yeah, rocking horse.

[58:32] Um

[58:33] so that's what I want you to do and then

[58:36] I want you to go to the field experiment

[58:37] and just fill it out and share your

[58:40] findings.

[58:41] Cedar chest from my grandmother. Yeah,

[58:44] tallest willow trees are my favorite.

[58:46] [music]

[58:47] My outdoor temple. Oh, I'm just getting

[58:50] distracted by all of the amazing

[58:53] pictures that you guys are sharing.

[58:55] Yeah. Instruments, yeah.

[58:58] Piano, clarinet, [music] guitar, all

[59:01] offerings of the trees.

[59:04] Um and so I'd love you to share if

[59:06] you're up for it. Like definitely fill

[59:07] out fill out the field notes cuz that's

[59:09] what [music]

[59:10] what we'll be gathering for the actual

[59:12] experiment. And then if you fancy

[59:14] sharing a a photo on social, use that

[59:16] hashtag the tree experiment. Um and if

[59:19] you tag me, I'll reshare it. Um my

[59:21] shamanic drum frame. Yes, all the books

[59:25] I've read, Kleenex. Mhm. Yeah, It's on

[59:29] and on. We can learn from each other as

[59:31] well of like noticing, witnessing.

[59:34] That's the first step to being in

[59:36] conscious relationship [music] with the

[59:38] intelligent pulse of life, with with

[59:40] with the planet, with the cosmos'

[59:42] ordered universe.

[59:45] So, thank you so much for joining me

[59:48] today. Thank you for bringing your open

[59:50] hearts and curiosity um and presence to

[59:55] this resonant field this experiment. Um

[59:58] remember that the experiment really is

[1:00:01] about your direct experience. You going

[1:00:04] and connecting with the trees. Um

[1:00:07] um witnessing the trees for the rest of

[1:00:10] the day and you'll probably you once you

[1:00:12] start doing it, if you're in the mystery

[1:00:14] school, this is a practice we do all the

[1:00:16] time. Um but it's like it completely

[1:00:19] changes your life because you realize

[1:00:21] that the sacred is all around us. We

[1:00:23] enter into

[1:00:24] we we move from separation into

[1:00:27] relationship, conscious relationship

[1:00:29] with this intelligent pulse of life and

[1:00:32] we feel like we belong. It's easier to

[1:00:34] regulate, it's easier to feel held and

[1:00:36] supported [music] and part of something

[1:00:39] way greater, less alone in the world and

[1:00:43] it's also the best way that I know

[1:00:45] >> [music]

[1:00:45] >> to connect in with intuition and

[1:00:47] creativity.

[1:00:49] So,

[1:00:50] um so tomorrow what we're going to be

[1:00:53] doing, so watch out for the day two and

[1:00:56] I'm going to send it into your email. Um

[1:00:59] so um and I'll have recorded video. It's

[1:01:03] amazing. Our practice tomorrow. Um

[1:01:05] [music]

[1:01:06] we're going to take it a step further by

[1:01:08] listening to the trees. So, listening

[1:01:10] more consciously and receiving a message

[1:01:13] from [music] a particular tree that you

[1:01:15] choose to connect with. Um so, we'll be

[1:01:18] exploring um what I would call

[1:01:21] channeling. You might just call

[1:01:24] a tuning to the wisdom of a tree

[1:01:27] and the different ways that we can

[1:01:29] receive wisdom and connecting with our

[1:01:32] own inner wisdom through connecting with

[1:01:35] the consciousness of nature.

[1:01:37] >> [music]

[1:01:37] >> So I'm going to be guiding you through

[1:01:40] one of my favorite practices. It is a

[1:01:42] practice called kithing, which is rooted

[1:01:45] in Celtic spirituality where we will

[1:01:48] connect in consciously with

[1:01:51] a tree, the consciousness of a tree, and

[1:01:53] discover if it has a message for us. And

[1:01:56] then we're going to document it as part

[1:01:58] of our field [music] notes.

[1:02:00] So I'm so looking forward to seeing what

[1:02:04] emerges,

[1:02:05] reading your field notes, and [music]

[1:02:09] and doing the practice tomorrow as well

[1:02:12] as

[1:02:14] just

[1:02:14] >> [music]

[1:02:14] >> seeing all your pictures as well.

[1:02:17] So yeah, that hashtag again is the tree

[1:02:20] experiment. [music]

[1:02:21] And yeah, you you definitely receive the

[1:02:27] >> [music]

[1:02:27] >> the invitation to add your field note

[1:02:29] via email or I think in where this video

[1:02:33] is housed, if it's

[1:02:35] we'll put the link there if you don't

[1:02:37] already have it.

[1:02:40] So

[1:02:42] yeah, that is that is where we're at.

[1:02:45] I'm so

[1:02:47] grateful that [music] you've joined me

[1:02:49] and that we're on this journey together

[1:02:51] over the next 3 days for the tree

[1:02:54] experiment, and [music] then we'll

[1:02:56] gather again next Monday

[1:02:59] to find out what we as a collective, as

[1:03:02] a network, have received and discovered

[1:03:06] [music]

[1:03:06] from the trees, the network of trees all

[1:03:09] around us, all around the world.

[1:03:11] >> [music]

[1:03:11] >> And what happens when we consciously

[1:03:15] connect in with nature, with the

[1:03:17] intelligence of nature at the same

[1:03:19] [music] time.

[1:03:21] Will we have patterns that occur in the

[1:03:25] messages that come in?

[1:03:27] I cannot wait [music]

[1:03:29] to find out. Um so, enjoy your

[1:03:32] witnessing the tree exercise

[1:03:35] >> [music]

[1:03:35] >> um today and um

[1:03:37] connecting in with a tree near you.

[1:03:40] Can't [music] wait to see a picture of

[1:03:42] it. And then um I'll see you again

[1:03:44] tomorrow

[1:03:46] um for the [music] kailing practice and

[1:03:49] I'll you'll receive like a a PDF on the

[1:03:53] [music] steps of that as well tomorrow.

[1:03:55] So, it's a very good one. And then

[1:03:57] Wednesday is awesome, too. We're

[1:03:59] breathing with the trees. So,

[1:04:01] >> [music]

[1:04:01] >> thank you so much. It's been lovely

[1:04:04] hanging out with the trees with you and

[1:04:08] yeah, enjoy [music]

[1:04:09] enjoy the connection, enjoy the

[1:04:11] deepening of relationship.

[1:04:13] We'll keep the comments open for a

[1:04:15] little while and um

[1:04:18] we can geek out over our tree pictures.

[1:04:21] >> [laughter]

[1:04:22] >> But then go out and be with the trees.

[1:04:25] [music]

[1:04:25] All right.

[1:04:27] Thank you so much.

[1:04:29] Have a wonderful day.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a guided meditation from Rebecca Campbell's Day 1 of The Tree Experiment that invites you to recall a tree from your past and reconnect with it as you are today. Campbell frames it as a way to rediscover wonder and a sense of belonging. It is followed by a field exercise in which you spend time with a living tree near you.
No. The event description says you don't need any special abilities or experience, just curiosity and a willingness to listen. Campbell says all levels of tree love and all levels of working with trees are welcome.
Campbell describes somatic landing as slowing the breath and settling into the body so you can be fully present. Participants may stand or sit, shake out the body, stretch, or make a sound. She says the practice opens a resonant field meant to hold the whole experiment.
After the meditation, participants go outside, connect with a tree near them, and notice how trees are woven into everyday life, including the air we breathe, the fruit we eat, the books we read and the places we call home. They then record and share their experience in the Field Note.
In the video she suggests that many people in the Western world have been separated from earth-based traditions present in ancestral lines, and that modern life compartmentalizes spirituality and nature. She describes a personal path in which meditation and nature felt separate rather than woven together.
No. Campbell says the event is an experiment whose outcome is unknown. Its central question is whether, when thousands of people listen to trees intentionally at the same time, common messages emerge, and the three days are designed to gather and compare what participants find.
