Self-Gaslighting: How to Trust Your Feelings Again

From Natalie Speakman

Watch · 6

It is 8 a.m., the chair is waiting, and the morning meditation is supposed to be the calm part of the day. Spiritual life coach and Reiki Master Teacher Natalie Speakman says that on one such morning, she was carrying a hurt about a relationship that she had not yet let herself name. She could feel tension in her chest. She told herself she was meditating, that the point was to be at peace with whatever arose, and she kept sitting. Then a sudden recognition landed: she was not allowing her own upset to be okay at all. She was using the practice to push it away. That moment, in her telling, was the first time she clearly saw self-gaslighting at work, and it is the spine of her livestream, "Stop Gaslighting Yourself: How to Trust Your Feelings Again," published on her YouTube channel in October 2026. Her argument is that self-gaslighting is a quiet, everyday habit of invalidating your own emotional reality, that it usually grows from early experiences of being dismissed, and that it tends to travel with people-pleasing and self-abandonment. The fix she points toward begins with a simple shift: your feelings are not errors to be corrected. As the video's description puts it, "Your emotions are not mistakes. They are messengers."

What does it actually mean to gaslight yourself?

The word comes from a more familiar setting. Speakman notes that "gaslighting" has become most associated with narcissistic abuse, where one person makes another question or doubt their own reality. In the livestream, she asks the audience whether they understand the term before turning it inward, because self-gaslighting only makes sense once the outward pattern is clear. When the lens shifts to yourself, the definition she gives is deliberately plain: "the very simple meaning is that we do not allow our feelings to be okay or valid."

That is the core of it. You do not need a dramatic outside manipulator for the pattern to run. You can hear a hurt, a disappointment, or a flash of frustration and immediately file it as overreaction. You tell yourself it wasn't a big deal, that other people have it worse, that you should be over it. Each of those internal verdicts is a small act of making yourself wrong for what you feel. Over time the verdicts stack up, and the feeling becomes something you are constantly managing rather than something you are listening to.

Speakman is candid that she did not see this in herself for a long time. She describes receiving coaching from her own coach, who asked her directly whether she saw that she was "making yourself wrong for your reactions and how you feel." She says the explanation was new to her, and that this is part of why coaching works: a good guide can point to the blind spots you cannot see from inside your own patterns. "Blind spots are things we don't see that run us," she says in the livestream. "If it's a blind spot, you don't know it's there." Her own growth work began at 16, and she admits her ego liked the idea that she already knew her patterns. The lesson she draws is that self-knowledge is always partial, and that the habit of self-criticism is often the hardest one to catch because it feels like diligence.

Can meditation become a way to hide from a feeling?

This is the part of the story that gives the talk its edge. Speakman was not avoiding meditation when she caught herself. She was doing exactly what a dedicated practitioner is supposed to do, and she recognized the subtler move happening underneath it. She says, "I was not letting it be okay that I was upset and I was trying to spiritually bypass what I was feeling with meditation." Spiritual bypassing, the use of spiritual language or practice to skip over unresolved emotion, is the trap she is describing. The meditation looks correct from the outside. Inside, it has become a way to get the feeling to go away.

Her description of what happened next is worth taking seriously, because it shows what the awareness actually did. Around 9:41 into the stream, she recounts the moment of recognition, the tears that followed, and the release of the tension she had been holding in her chest, which she likened to a pressure cooker finally opened. The shift was not a technique she applied. It came from seeing the pattern clearly enough to stop resisting the feeling. That is the difference she is trying to teach: the feeling did not disappear because she corrected it. It moved once she stopped arguing with it.

She also frames the work as ongoing rather than a single breakthrough. Almost two years after that morning, she says she is still "on a journey of releasing this habit of self-gaslighting and embracing the medicine of self-compassion and acceptance." In the livestream she gives a recent example of disappointment after someone did not communicate well about an agreement. She says it "wasn't a huge deal" and that she simply wanted to share her standards, but she still felt the frustration, and she noticed the old reflex to shrink the feeling. The point is not that she never self-gaslights. It is that she now notices it sooner.

Where does self-doubt start?

The video's own description lists the origins Speakman covers: how childhood emotional invalidation shapes self-doubt, and how people-pleasing connects to self-abandonment. The excerpt available for this article focuses on her personal experience and her framing of the concept, so the specifics of those childhood and people-pleasing sections are not fully reproduced here. What the material does establish is the logic she is building toward. If, early on, your feelings were met with dismissal, correction, or silence, you learned that the feeling itself was the problem. Later, the same reflex can show up as a habit of putting others' comfort ahead of your own reactions, and then questioning your reactions as a way of keeping the peace.

Seen this way, self-gaslighting is less a character flaw than a learned survival strategy that has outlived its usefulness. It made sense when being wrong about your feelings was safer than being honest about them. The work is to notice that the strategy is still running and to decide whether you still need it.

What does the practice look like?

The description promises "four practical steps to stop self-gaslighting" and a guided breathwork practice to reconnect with your emotional truth. The portion of the transcript available here does not spell those four steps out, so this article will not invent them. What it does show is the orientation Speakman brings to the practice. Near the later part of the stream she describes the work in terms of softening: "it's just about that softening," and she speaks of the "medicine of self-compassion and acceptance" as the alternative to the internal argument.

The most useful thread from the material is the reframe she offers around the feelings themselves. Her line "I'm not wrong for how I feel" (around 44:17 in the livestream) names the exact sentence the self-gaslighting voice refuses to say. Saying it, even as a starting point, changes the question from "Is this feeling justified?" to "What is this feeling telling me?" That second question is what the description calls treating emotions as messengers.

"You don't have to justify your feelings to deserve compassion."

From the video description, Natalie Speakman's YouTube channel, 2026

This is a useful standard to hold up against your own inner monologue. Ask whether you are demanding a justification for a feeling before you will allow yourself to have it. If so, you are probably gaslighting yourself, and the compassion you would give a friend is being withheld.

How do you start noticing it in your own week?

Speakman's material suggests a few practical habits that follow directly from her framing. None of them is a substitute for the full session, but they match the pattern she describes.

  • Notice the verdict. When a feeling arrives, track the sentence that follows it. "I'm overreacting" and "it's not a big deal" are the common ones she names implicitly through her own examples.
  • Check your meditation for escape. If sitting with a feeling feels like failing at the practice, ask whether you are trying to bypass it. Her own morning shows that tension can sit under a calm posture.
  • Separate the feeling from the story. The feeling is information. The judgment about the feeling is a separate layer you can examine.
  • Name the reflex to people-please. When you find yourself rewriting a reaction so someone else stays comfortable, that is a moment to pause and honor what you actually experienced.

Speakman's own timeline is a reminder that this takes repetition. She did not become free of the habit after one realization. She kept returning to it, and the return itself became the practice.

Where to go from here

If the idea of self-gaslighting feels familiar, the full livestream is the place to hear the complete argument and the guided breathwork in her voice. Speakman says her first Insight Timer course, "The End of Self-Gaslighting," goes deeper into the same material, and that she has been writing about the concept for a few years. The livestream also notes a free PDF resource on the topics covered, which she offers to viewers who request it. Her website, nataliemspeakman.com, and her link collection list her other offerings, including sessions and Reiki instruction.

Whatever you choose, start with the sentence Speakman keeps returning to. You do not have to justify your feelings to deserve compassion. Let the feeling be a messenger before you decide whether it is wrong.

[0:19] Hello.

[0:22] Good morning. Good afternoon. Good

[0:25] evening.

[0:30] Just

[0:32] pulling up something right here.

[0:36] >> [clears throat]

[0:39] >> Great.

[0:41] Excited to be here with you all today.

[0:44] How is everybody doing?

[0:47] Um

[0:49] we are going to be talking about a topic

[0:52] very near and dear to my heart

[0:55] because of its impact on me personally

[0:58] as well as the clients that I work with.

[1:02] And that concept is called self

[1:04] gaslighting.

[1:06] So, we will be diving into that very

[1:10] shortly.

[1:11] And I'd like to start out by just

[1:16] connecting here in the space with you

[1:18] all.

[1:19] Welcoming you.

[1:21] Um if you care to give an emoji in your

[1:24] in the chat of your current mood, you

[1:27] can do that. Or if you're new and you'd

[1:28] like to

[1:30] say where you're joining from,

[1:33] you're welcome to do that as well.

[1:40] And how

[1:42] how are you?

[1:43] How are you doing?

[1:47] It's been a very intense time

[1:50] astrologically.

[1:52] If you tune into that or not

[1:55] and you believe in astrological

[1:57] influences,

[1:59] it's definitely happening. So,

[2:02] I know for me it has been a very intense

[2:06] 24 hours with what's been going on

[2:10] in the sky

[2:11] and and you know, it directly relates to

[2:15] gaslighting or self-gaslighting. So, I'm

[2:18] excited to

[2:20] bring in my own experiences

[2:23] to help you all

[2:25] understand how this may show up for you

[2:27] in your life

[2:29] as well as if you do see this pattern,

[2:32] then then what? What do you do about it?

[2:36] Um

[2:37] if you are new to me, I'm Natalie,

[2:39] spiritual life coach and Reiki Master

[2:41] Teacher.

[2:44] And you can give me a follow here on

[2:46] Insight Timer

[2:48] if you don't already. If you already

[2:50] follow me, thank you. If you don't and

[2:52] you choose to, thank you as well.

[2:56] Um I will go ahead and share I have my

[2:59] first Insight Timer course

[3:02] um published recently.

[3:06] Although I've been talking about

[3:07] self-gaslighting for a few years now,

[3:11] I now have

[3:13] um this course you can see popping up on

[3:15] the screen called The End of

[3:17] Self-Gaslighting, which is also the

[3:19] title of our live stream.

[3:21] So, if you want to dive deeper

[3:24] into this concept,

[3:26] um you can check out the course if

[3:29] you're a premium member.

[3:31] Um

[3:33] so, thank you for listening, taking the

[3:37] course, engaging with it,

[3:40] giving a rating, and sharing it

[3:43] with others if it's helpful. So,

[3:46] hi Chanders. Hope I'm saying that right

[3:50] from Cam- Cambridge. Hope I'm saying

[3:52] that right.

[3:55] And welcome. Thank you for

[3:57] being honest and vulnerable

[4:00] and sharing

[4:01] >> [snorts]

[4:01] >> and that you're here to learn. So, I

[4:03] know this will be valuable for you.

[4:06] Hi Jen. Hi Chris from Louisiana.

[4:10] Um

[4:13] Yeah. So, if you are, as I said, a

[4:16] premium Insight Timer member, you can

[4:18] access that course.

[4:20] If not, this live stream will be great.

[4:22] I also have a PDF resource I have

[4:25] created

[4:27] um about the topics we'll be talking

[4:29] about today and the ways to work with

[4:32] self-gaslighting if you see it.

[4:35] And that's a free resource I provide.

[4:37] So, if you would like that PDF, send me

[4:40] a private message and just say PDF and

[4:43] I'll know what you're talking about.

[4:45] Um

[4:47] And you can do so here through the app.

[4:50] I'm also streaming this on my YouTube

[4:52] channel right now, so you can catch the

[4:54] replay as well as all my replays there

[4:56] if you would like.

[4:57] And all of my info, all my socials and

[5:01] ways to connect are here in my profile

[5:04] in the link tree. So,

[5:09] we will go ahead and get started.

[5:12] So, I want to ask everybody first,

[5:16] um do you understand what gaslighting

[5:21] means?

[5:22] Because

[5:24] if, you know, you need to know what

[5:26] gaslighting means in order to then know

[5:29] what self-gaslighting means.

[5:32] And there's no, it's not a quiz. It's

[5:35] not a, you know,

[5:38] you should know.

[5:39] Um

[5:41] Yeah. So, thank you, Chanders, for being

[5:44] brave enough to say

[5:46] that you know a little.

[5:48] Um

[5:50] And yes, Chris quest- questioning or

[5:53] doubting your own reality. So,

[5:56] uh traditionally this this term has come

[5:59] up in the recent past around narcissism,

[6:03] narcissistic

[6:05] abuse.

[6:06] Uh that that is a very common

[6:10] um symptom or

[6:13] way that narcissists abuse is by

[6:17] gaslighting their victims.

[6:20] Which is, as Chris is saying,

[6:22] questioning or

[6:25] making somebody else question or doubt

[6:27] their own reality.

[6:29] In in just pure gaslighting.

[6:32] Um so, then when we turn it

[6:36] to ourselves, if we look at what does it

[6:38] mean to gaslight ourselves,

[6:41] the very simple meaning is

[6:45] is that we

[6:48] do not allow our feelings to be okay or

[6:53] valid.

[6:55] Um

[6:57] for me, I had a very big spiritual

[7:01] awakening experience, like a sudden

[7:06] aha and spiritual moment

[7:10] in my own life about seeing

[7:14] self-gaslighting for the first time. So,

[7:17] it started um

[7:20] when I was in a coaching session, when I

[7:22] was receiving coaching from my coach.

[7:24] So, I was the client

[7:27] in the session with my coach.

[7:30] I don't remember how, but he was like,

[7:32] "Do you see you're gaslighting yourself?

[7:35] Do you see you're making yourself wrong

[7:38] for your reactions and how you feel?"

[7:41] And he explained it to me and I had

[7:43] never seen this

[7:45] in my life and that's actually part of

[7:47] why coaching is so powerful

[7:50] is because, [snorts]

[7:51] you know, and for me as a coach, my job

[7:54] is to help other people and my clients

[7:56] see blind spots.

[7:58] Blind spots are things we don't see that

[8:01] run us.

[8:03] If it's a blind spot, you don't know

[8:05] it's there.

[8:07] So, I had this blind spot and I mean

[8:10] I've been on this growth journey for my

[8:14] whole life since I was

[8:17] 16 years old.

[8:20] So, you know, my ego likes to think,

[8:23] "Oh, I know myself. I know my patterns.

[8:25] I know everything." No, I don't and I

[8:28] didn't.

[8:31] So, he explained what it meant, you

[8:33] know, that I was just making myself

[8:36] wrong for how I felt all the damn time.

[8:40] It was a sea in which I swam.

[8:44] And

[8:45] a week or so after we had this very

[8:47] powerful coaching session where we dove

[8:50] into this,

[8:52] I woke up in the morning.

[8:55] I was having an issue with a

[8:57] relationship.

[8:59] I was feeling upset.

[9:02] I was feeling hurt, but it was like

[9:04] underneath the surface and I went to sit

[9:07] in my chair for my morning meditation.

[9:11] And I sat down and I could feel tension

[9:14] in my body, but I just was like, "I'm

[9:15] meditating. The point of meditation is

[9:18] to, you know,

[9:20] uh be at peace, be at one with whatever

[9:23] I'm feeling and accept and be present

[9:25] and notice my thoughts and you know, be

[9:29] the witness and the observer and and all

[9:31] of the things that we know, you know,

[9:33] meditation can guide us with and

[9:37] >> [snorts]

[9:39] >> I suddenly had a moment where I was

[9:41] like, "Oh my god, I'm gaslighting myself

[9:44] right now."

[9:46] Because I was

[9:49] not letting it be okay that I was upset

[9:52] and I was trying to

[9:54] spiritually bypass what I was feeling

[9:58] with meditation. And And this was all

[10:00] underneath the surface. I wasn't doing

[10:03] it consciously.

[10:05] And this is the power of

[10:08] you know,

[10:09] learning this. And so the minute I was

[10:12] like, "Oh my god,

[10:14] I'm making myself wrong for how I feel

[10:17] right now.

[10:18] I'm not letting it be okay that I feel

[10:20] really upset

[10:22] and hurt and it's 8:00 a.m. in the

[10:25] morning and I'm trying to meditate."

[10:29] And the minute I realized it, I just

[10:31] burst into tears and all of that tension

[10:34] in my chest, in my heart,

[10:37] it was like this

[10:39] pressure cooker that was released.

[10:43] And I just was allowed myself to feel

[10:45] what I was feeling. And I was like, "Oh

[10:48] my god, this was a huge awakening

[10:50] moment. That was self-gaslighting at

[10:53] work."

[10:55] And exactly Chandra, so you know, we're

[10:58] going to look into where does this all

[11:01] come from? Where does it start?

[11:03] Um

[11:05] why do we do it? Why do we have it?

[11:10] Ah, let me get my screen fixed here.

[11:15] Um

[11:17] so who all can relate to

[11:21] something like that or maybe

[11:24] maybe

[11:25] it's just a general way you move through

[11:27] the world.

[11:29] Um

[11:33] And you know, that was almost 2 years

[11:35] ago. And since then, I have been on a

[11:38] journey of

[11:40] releasing this habit of self-gaslighting

[11:44] and embracing the medicine of

[11:46] self-compassion and [snorts] acceptance.

[11:49] And it's a journey.

[11:51] Um as I was mentioning a few moments

[11:54] ago, you know, the astrology transits

[11:57] right now, there's a lot going on in the

[11:58] sky if you know, if you resonate with

[12:01] that.

[12:03] I do.

[12:06] And

[12:09] I had an experience yesterday with

[12:11] somebody who

[12:14] didn't communicate well.

[12:17] And

[12:19] um

[12:20] I was a bit disappointed and frustrated

[12:22] in the

[12:24] how they were and were not

[12:26] communicating.

[12:29] And like it was around

[12:32] you know, an agreement we had made.

[12:36] And I I

[12:37] it wasn't a huge deal. I just got to

[12:40] share my standards.

[12:43] And that you know,

[12:44] >> [snorts]

[12:45] >> I that's not the way I operate as far as

[12:47] making plans, etc.

[12:49] And I felt a little disappointed. I felt

[12:51] a little frustrated.

[12:53] And then this person

[12:55] asked to have a phone call later

[12:59] to like talk more about it.

[13:02] Um

[13:04] and we agreed on a time. And guess what?

[13:06] The time came and went.

[13:09] The call didn't happen.

[13:12] And at this point, I was

[13:14] furious. I was enraged.

[13:18] I was so angry.

[13:21] Now,

[13:23] one of the things I know

[13:26] on this journey that the you know, we're

[13:28] all on here

[13:30] is if it's hysterical, it's historical.

[13:35] And I was And that's like it doesn't

[13:36] mean hysterical, but

[13:40] if my reaction is out of proportion to

[13:43] the event,

[13:45] likely it doesn't just have to do with

[13:48] the event itself, right? And so I have

[13:51] had many other situations

[13:54] where there's been the same dynamic.

[13:57] Um and so yes, there was some charge

[14:01] with this situation and

[14:04] the anger, the level of anger that I

[14:06] felt was out of proportion to

[14:09] the experience.

[14:11] Um

[14:14] and to where I woke up in the middle of

[14:16] the night angry. I don't I can't ever

[14:19] remember feeling

[14:22] anger

[14:24] in the middle of the night.

[14:27] And so

[14:28] bringing self gaslighting back into

[14:31] this, having a lifetime pattern

[14:34] of making myself wrong for how I feel,

[14:37] you can guess that

[14:40] you know, I was gaslighting myself all

[14:42] over the place. I'm overreacting. I'm

[14:44] doubting myself. I I shouldn't have

[14:47] said my standards. I

[14:49] I'm [snorts] too upset. I'm I'm too

[14:52] angry.

[14:55] I'm too much.

[14:57] There's something wrong. What's wrong?

[15:00] I shouldn't be so angry. All of these

[15:02] things. So how many of you can relate to

[15:04] having

[15:05] those sorts of thoughts with I mean it

[15:08] doesn't have to be anger.

[15:10] It can be anything. It can even be

[15:13] happiness. It could even be joy.

[15:17] So there was this propensity to really

[15:21] second-guess, doubt myself,

[15:25] make myself wrong for how I feel.

[15:30] And that's exactly what was happening.

[15:34] So,

[15:36] it's like the awareness is the first

[15:38] step of making a change and

[15:41] even the awareness isn't necessarily

[15:45] like this magical thing that's going to

[15:49] uh totally dissolve [snorts] the

[15:51] pattern, right? We we just get to work

[15:54] with it every situation, every time.

[15:59] And you know, I actually didn't even

[16:02] think about the self-gaslighting until

[16:05] maybe even this morning or

[16:08] it was more like

[16:11] why am I so angry?

[16:13] What's wrong? You know, like this

[16:15] analysis paralysis that happens, which

[16:19] you know, can be also a form of

[16:21] self-gaslighting.

[16:25] And yes, boundaries are important. I'm

[16:27] not

[16:28] I'm not talking about

[16:31] not setting a boundary.

[16:34] I'm saying, what is my internal response

[16:38] to

[16:40] any situation where the self-gaslighting

[16:42] might come up?

[16:45] You know, I did I didn't

[16:48] like in my actions to the person, I was

[16:51] totally fine. It was I mean, I expressed

[16:53] [snorts]

[16:54] my disappointment,

[16:56] you know. It was more everything

[16:58] [snorts]

[16:59] that was going on over here

[17:03] that I was making myself wrong for and

[17:06] questioning myself.

[17:11] So, I wonder for you all

[17:15] if you can relate to this pattern.

[17:19] What phrases might come up for you

[17:23] in self-gaslighting?

[17:27] You know, like for me it was I'm

[17:29] overreacting.

[17:32] You know, there's something something

[17:33] wrong with me.

[17:35] Like

[17:37] I'm too up. I don't know,

[17:39] whatever.

[17:40] >> [laughter]

[17:43] >> Um

[17:45] Yeah, so if you can start thinking about

[17:48] what are the phrases,

[17:51] then you can start waking up in the

[17:54] dream.

[17:57] Cuz it's just old conditioning. So,

[18:00] where does this all come from?

[18:03] It was already

[18:05] mentioned in [clears throat] the chat

[18:06] about childhood trauma. Yes.

[18:10] That's where everything comes from,

[18:12] right?

[18:13] >> [laughter]

[18:14] >> So,

[18:15] in childhood, if you were told

[18:19] "Stop crying, sit in the corner, go to

[18:21] your room, you're too much."

[18:26] You know, when your feelings were not

[18:28] okay, you cried too much, you laughed

[18:30] too much, you were too angry, whatever.

[18:35] Anything where you were

[18:37] being

[18:39] told you were too much.

[18:44] So, you were being made wrong for how

[18:46] you feel.

[18:48] And then of course, we learn that and

[18:51] then we turn on ourselves.

[18:56] The other thing we do is

[18:59] um

[19:02] you know,

[19:03] as children

[19:06] we have to do whatever we need to do to

[19:09] stay safe or keep the connection to our

[19:11] primary caregivers intact.

[19:15] So, that means

[19:17] you know,

[19:19] trying to keep the peace.

[19:22] And usually that will mean

[19:25] well, you know, my parents, they can't

[19:28] be the ones that are wrong.

[19:31] You know, that's impossible because when

[19:33] you're a kid, they are the authority.

[19:36] They are basically God.

[19:39] So, it's impossible for them to be wrong

[19:43] in our little minds.

[19:47] So, then we make ourselves wrong.

[19:51] And then before when we might have spoke

[19:54] up or rebelled,

[19:57] we were punished.

[20:03] So, that's where some of these dynamics

[20:07] come from.

[20:15] Totally, Chris. And that's what I

[20:17] noticed with this anger example. I mean,

[20:20] I was allowing myself to feel it and

[20:23] because it was so intense,

[20:26] I I also was like,

[20:30] yeah, why is this happening? Why am I at

[20:32] why what's wrong with me?

[20:35] etc.

[20:36] All of that.

[20:39] Hi, Gail. Teresa.

[20:44] Yeah, so any any time where we we didn't

[20:47] feel safe in childhood,

[20:49] in whatever way,

[20:52] we were invalidated,

[20:54] we were not celebrated,

[20:57] um

[20:59] and you know, of course, as always when

[21:02] we look at and think about childhood

[21:05] trauma and abuse dynamics, It's not

[21:08] about condoning,

[21:10] you know,

[21:12] abusers or whatever.

[21:15] Um

[21:17] and I mean, it it

[21:20] 99% of the time I would say it does not

[21:24] start with, you know,

[21:26] with us.

[21:28] It's generational. It's ancestral.

[21:31] You know, things are learned.

[21:35] And, you know, here we are in Insight

[21:37] Timer, all of us here, and we are cycle

[21:40] breakers, and we are

[21:42] here

[21:44] to wake up and break the patterns that

[21:46] have gone on so long. So, I acknowledge

[21:49] all of you for being here.

[21:52] You know, as we know, it's not easy.

[21:56] And it's worth it.

[21:57] I believe we incarnated to do this work

[22:00] right now.

[22:02] So, I acknowledge each of you.

[22:06] Mhm.

[22:10] So, I mentioned this earlier, spiritual

[22:12] bypassing.

[22:14] So, does anybody not know what that term

[22:16] means? Cuz it it kind of fits in

[22:21] the realm

[22:23] of self-gaslighting, and it's also a

[22:26] little bit of a different way

[22:29] uh

[22:30] to see it.

[22:36] So, um

[22:39] does any Okay, great. Thank you, Teresa.

[22:42] Spiritual bypassing, and and this is a

[22:45] term in our wonderful spiritual circles

[22:47] here in Insight Timer or out in the

[22:49] world. Um this term gets used a lot

[22:53] with, you know, good reason, because we

[22:56] are here in a spiritual journey and path

[22:59] together.

[23:02] So, spiritual bypassing is sort of where

[23:05] we self-gaslight

[23:07] ourselves.

[23:10] But, we put a spiritual

[23:12] bent on on it.

[23:16] Um

[23:20] Let me think of a way.

[23:24] You know, maybe uh like this person that

[23:27] I got angry and everything that I'm

[23:29] talking about, right? If I were to be

[23:31] like

[23:33] you know, oh, just love and light, you

[23:35] know, oh, bless their heart, and

[23:39] um you know, maybe it was karmic. Maybe

[23:43] it [laughter] was from a past life. So,

[23:46] you know, so it's okay or I shouldn't be

[23:48] upset and

[23:50] you know, I just need to be positive.

[23:52] Like

[23:54] something like that

[23:56] would be an example of spiritual

[23:58] bypassing or you could even say

[24:00] spiritual whitewashing.

[24:04] And really, if you think about it,

[24:07] that's self-gaslighting.

[24:10] And it doesn't mean that we don't want

[24:12] to,

[24:13] you know,

[24:15] think of other people with kindness and

[24:16] love and all of those good things. And

[24:19] if we're doing it

[24:21] in this way to invalidate our experience

[24:24] and ourselves, that's spiritual

[24:27] bypassing.

[24:30] Um I have a friend.

[24:33] And you know, a lot of people don't even

[24:34] know they're doing it. And this can also

[24:37] happen in

[24:39] dynamics with spiritual groups or

[24:41] spiritual friends that have similar

[24:44] beliefs.

[24:46] Like um I have a friend and and she she

[24:50] doesn't even know she's doing it.

[24:53] You know, how many of you know people

[24:55] where they just give advice

[24:59] and they

[25:01] they just that's their that's the way

[25:03] they relate, that's the way they respond

[25:06] when you don't even ask for it.

[25:10] Um

[25:12] yeah, so I know I was talking to this

[25:13] person

[25:15] in the recent past

[25:17] and I was sharing [snorts] a challenge

[25:19] of some kind. I don't remember what, but

[25:21] what I do remember is is they started

[25:24] the spiritual bypassing on me.

[25:27] Of like, oh, you know, you just need to

[25:29] shift your mindset and

[25:32] you know

[25:34] you need to think positive and

[25:37] and again, not to say

[25:40] that advice and that might that's not

[25:42] helpful, it's just, you know, in this

[25:45] context where I wasn't asking for it.

[25:48] And I really just wanted to be witnessed

[25:50] and

[25:51] held space for.

[25:54] Right? And and somebody

[25:57] you know, comes in with

[25:59] unsolicited advice and then put putting

[26:02] like spiritual clothing on it. So that's

[26:04] another way that can show up.

[26:09] So I'm curious what this brings up for

[26:13] everybody. If you're thinking of things

[26:15] where you can relate.

[26:19] Teresa, feeling that God is rejecting

[26:22] you from spiritual abuse. That sounds

[26:25] really challenging. I'm sorry

[26:29] that

[26:30] that has happened.

[26:33] Um

[26:36] and yeah, that's a a really interesting

[26:38] point, too, about bringing up you know,

[26:41] a belief or a sense that God is

[26:44] rejecting you.

[26:46] Um

[26:48] which is sort of a bit outside of like a

[26:51] self-gaslighting

[26:53] sort of.

[26:55] Um

[26:57] but also,

[26:59] you know, it can be relevant.

[27:02] I read something recently about it was

[27:07] I'm probably going to botch it, but

[27:08] something like

[27:10] um

[27:14] however like however you experience your

[27:18] relationship with your higher power

[27:21] or what you think

[27:24] your higher power thinks of you, vice

[27:26] versa, is really how you think and feel

[27:28] about yourself.

[27:31] And I found that a really compelling

[27:34] concept. I'm not I just feel like it's

[27:36] something to just kind of sit with and

[27:39] feel into,

[27:41] but it landed as very interesting and

[27:44] possibly true.

[27:47] Um

[27:48] Hi, Jed.

[27:51] Yeah, you know, advice giving

[27:55] that's also another

[27:57] >> [laughter]

[27:57] >> another hot topic.

[28:00] Um

[28:01] yeah, one of

[28:03] I heard this quote about advice recently

[28:08] that was

[28:10] um

[28:11] unsolicited advice is criticism.

[28:17] And was like, "Ooh, that hit."

[28:21] Um

[28:22] cuz if it's not asked for, right?

[28:26] So, you know, me being a life coach, I

[28:29] am very aware both in sessions with my

[28:32] clients

[28:34] and in friendships or whatever

[28:37] of really just showing up in

[28:40] with in whatever context it's it's in.

[28:45] And and not just jumping to helping,

[28:49] etc.

[28:52] Um

[28:54] You know, it can be the the best thing

[28:56] can be like, "How can I support you?

[28:59] What

[29:00] What are you wanting from me right now?"

[29:02] Or what it like with a friend who was

[29:04] always giving this spiritual advice, you

[29:08] know, it would have been great if she

[29:10] would have said,

[29:11] "Yeah, that sounds difficult. Like,

[29:15] are you just wanting to vent or talk

[29:17] about it? Or are you wanting

[29:20] to think in solutions?" You know, things

[29:22] like that. Those sorts of questions can

[29:24] be

[29:25] very supportive and helpful. So.

[29:30] Um

[29:32] Yeah.

[29:38] So, okay.

[29:41] I'm curious from everyone,

[29:44] do you have a sense now if if this is a

[29:47] new concept for you?

[29:51] Can you see where it could be showing up

[29:54] in your life?

[29:57] Um because that's the first step.

[30:00] Right? Bringing it from the unconscious

[30:03] to the conscious.

[30:06] Being aware of it in in in its essence.

[30:08] And if you take my course here on

[30:10] Insight Timer, The End of

[30:11] Self-Gaslighting, it's 7 days, about 10

[30:14] minutes a day, you'll dive deeply in.

[30:18] Um

[30:23] And, you know, I want to make sure that

[30:26] everybody

[30:28] has at least a sense of this for

[30:30] themselves.

[30:31] Because we don't know what we don't

[30:34] know.

[30:35] And if we don't know

[30:38] that we're doing this, then we can't see

[30:40] it. And honestly, I would say

[30:43] 99% of people do this.

[30:48] So.

[30:54] Yeah, I hear that, Jed, about advice.

[30:58] And yeah, it's not like okay, the

[31:01] somebody's intention is likely good and

[31:05] if it's unasked for and unsolicited,

[31:07] they are forcing

[31:10] themselves into, you know,

[31:13] what you're saying

[31:18] without being asked.

[31:22] So, yeah, something interesting to

[31:25] consider.

[31:27] So, even if it is like,

[31:30] you know, oh, my friend's wonderful

[31:32] spiritual advice, it's all positive,

[31:36] but if I wasn't asking for it,

[31:40] it can come across as criticism.

[31:44] Yeah.

[31:46] Chandra says, "Hurt yourself to please

[31:48] others."

[31:50] That's interesting to notice.

[31:53] Yeah, so

[31:56] self-gaslighting and self-judgment,

[31:59] you know, are two sides of the same

[32:01] coin.

[32:03] Right?

[32:04] And when we think about where we judge

[32:07] ourselves,

[32:10] to me, self-judgment will always find

[32:13] something to land on. So, if if say I'm

[32:16] like,

[32:17] "It's okay that I feel this way. I'm not

[32:20] wrong." Like, if I'm working [snorts]

[32:22] with releasing self-gaslighting,

[32:26] it self-judgment can then jump to

[32:30] something else.

[32:33] Like,

[32:34] you know, "I'm too much." Or, "What's

[32:37] wrong with me or

[32:39] you know, so it we have to keep working

[32:42] with it and moving with it and forgiving

[32:45] ourselves, self-compassion and

[32:47] forgiveness,

[32:48] self-validation,

[32:52] you know, to the nth degree.

[32:56] If that makes sense.

[33:02] So,

[33:07] I wonder for you all

[33:13] what emotion or what situation

[33:17] stands out for you where you notice this

[33:19] dynamic

[33:21] the most or just at all if this is your

[33:24] first time

[33:27] considering this.

[33:30] Um for me, you know, anger is a big one.

[33:35] Um because I grew up in a household

[33:38] where it wasn't okay for anyone to be

[33:41] angry but my mother. My mother was the

[33:43] only one who was allowed to be angry.

[33:46] Um so,

[33:49] it was definitely not okay for me to

[33:51] ever be angry.

[33:52] >> [snorts]

[33:53] >> And how many of you can relate to

[33:56] having the thought, "I never get angry.

[33:59] I don't have a problem with anger."

[34:02] Well, the reason

[34:04] that happens is because you learned that

[34:06] in childhood just like me.

[34:10] And you learned that it was not safe to

[34:12] feel anger. So, then we just stuff it

[34:14] down so far that

[34:17] we just don't even have that response

[34:19] anymore.

[34:22] So,

[34:24] when you start allowing yourself to

[34:26] feel,

[34:29] you know, which is what I was saying

[34:30] about this experience, this example I

[34:33] gave earlier and like

[34:36] there was

[34:37] a lot of anger in response to the

[34:39] situation. And as I said, if it's

[34:42] hysterical, it's historical.

[34:45] So when the feelings come up, a lot of

[34:48] times they will be

[34:50] bigger than the situation because

[34:52] there's been decades of

[34:54] you know, not allowing yourself to feel.

[34:58] And it's usually anger for for most of

[35:00] us

[35:01] in these spiritual

[35:04] realms together.

[35:10] Yeah, and Chanders, that's a good point.

[35:12] You know, if somebody else gets mad, we

[35:15] make ourselves wrong, we make ourselves

[35:17] responsible for their anger. I mean,

[35:19] that's childhood right there, right?

[35:25] Yeah,

[35:26] that really makes sense.

[35:30] So, you know,

[35:33] we want to first like

[35:37] yes, we can talk about the external

[35:40] world and out here.

[35:43] And when we're talking about

[35:45] self-gaslighting, it's really what's

[35:47] going on in our inner experience.

[35:51] First.

[35:55] So, something happens or I have a

[35:58] thought

[36:00] and then I make myself wrong for it.

[36:03] That's really it in its simplest

[36:05] essence.

[36:07] I shouldn't feel this way.

[36:13] I'm too upset. I'm too angry. I'm too

[36:15] much. I'm too this or that.

[36:19] Or maybe something happens and you don't

[36:22] have a reaction that you think you

[36:23] should have. Could be either way.

[36:28] Hey Ginger.

[36:31] Yes, it is. Wonderful Teresa.

[36:36] Um

[36:38] It is It's working with with right here.

[36:42] What's right in here.

[36:46] So, not abandoning ourselves and not

[36:50] rejecting ourselves

[36:52] when

[36:53] we have a feeling, when we have a

[36:56] reaction, when we have a response.

[37:00] So, the medicine for this

[37:03] of course, it's compassion and

[37:06] what I have

[37:08] found are these phrases that are

[37:11] medicine. They are true medicine. And

[37:14] they're so simple and they're so

[37:16] profound. And like I said in the PDF

[37:19] um resource that I have

[37:22] I have these phrases listed.

[37:25] So, you can um send me a message. Just

[37:28] say PDF and

[37:30] I'll get it to you.

[37:35] But, my favorite one is it makes sense

[37:37] you feel this way.

[37:40] It makes sense you or I You're talking

[37:44] to yourself, right? It makes sense you

[37:47] feel this way. I suggest putting your

[37:49] hand on your heart. Putting your hand on

[37:51] your heart does

[37:53] something physiological in the body. It

[37:57] releases oxytocin.

[38:02] Doing this for 15 seconds.

[38:05] So, you know, we want to bring our

[38:07] nervous system

[38:09] into balance.

[38:12] So, it makes sense you feel this way.

[38:20] So, if you think think about a situation

[38:22] right now and you want to do this with

[38:24] me and you notice there's a making

[38:26] yourself wrong theme going on.

[38:33] It makes sense you feel this way.

[38:36] It's totally understandable.

[38:40] Of course, of course you would feel this

[38:42] way given the situation, given

[38:46] everything.

[38:49] So, it's these deep, simple, and

[38:51] profound self-validation phrases. We did

[38:55] not receive these in childhood

[38:59] at some point or at many points.

[39:02] So, we get to re-parent ourselves and do

[39:05] this for ourself.

[39:08] I was in a session with a coaching

[39:09] client in the past week.

[39:12] They were very distressed. They were

[39:15] extremely

[39:17] They were in in so much suffering. They

[39:19] were It was It was really, you know,

[39:22] heart-rending

[39:25] to

[39:26] you know, see the suffering that

[39:28] this person was in.

[39:31] And, you know,

[39:34] so we I brought them into presence, into

[39:39] the body. We

[39:41] got into the moment. We got out of the

[39:43] thinking.

[39:45] And I

[39:47] took them through these phrases and had

[39:49] them put their hand on their heart.

[39:52] And I just had them receive

[39:56] these phrases.

[39:58] It makes sense you feel this way.

[40:02] Given your situation, given everything

[40:04] you've been through, given your life,

[40:06] given your childhood,

[40:08] given your trauma, given your abuse.

[40:12] Of course, you would feel this way given

[40:15] all everything, given all of this.

[40:20] And then I said some more compassion

[40:23] phrases.

[40:25] And I swear we did this for 3 minutes,

[40:29] maybe five.

[40:32] At the end of that time, so I had them

[40:34] rate their level of intensity from one

[40:36] to 10.

[40:39] So, before we started, their level of

[40:42] suffering and disease

[40:46] and

[40:47] level of like being triggered and

[40:50] really, really upset. They were a nine.

[40:53] They were

[40:54] a nine out of 10.

[40:56] After 3 to 5 minutes of doing what I

[40:59] said, they were a four.

[41:03] So, just that in itself shows the power

[41:06] of this.

[41:08] In 3 to 5 minutes,

[41:11] over half, 50% decrease.

[41:16] I mean, this person was having suicidal

[41:18] thoughts. I mean, it was very

[41:20] serious.

[41:23] Yeah, so

[41:26] you know, we can do this for ourselves.

[41:28] Of course, we can do it in sacred space

[41:31] with

[41:33] people who care, like me,

[41:35] and other wonderful practitioners.

[41:40] So, yeah, it was a very profound

[41:43] experience and they got to experience

[41:46] like, okay, wow. You know, before the

[41:49] session, they had been crying all

[41:50] morning.

[41:53] And

[41:55] you know, we

[41:57] brought them into equili- equilibrium

[41:59] with this process.

[42:02] And there was other things besides

[42:03] self-gaslighting going on and

[42:07] you know, part of the suffering is I

[42:09] shouldn't be feeling this way and

[42:10] resisting our experience.

[42:14] So,

[42:16] you can practice with yourself.

[42:19] But, just first start noticing

[42:23] because for me, like I said, it was

[42:25] subconscious.

[42:27] It was like something would happen or I

[42:30] would think something, then I would have

[42:32] a judgement on myself, and there would

[42:34] be a very slight contraction in my body,

[42:37] a tightening, a heaviness, or an

[42:40] opposing

[42:42] an opposing of

[42:44] myself or the situation.

[42:47] So, it was subtle at times.

[42:50] And then,

[42:52] now I've learned what it is and how to

[42:55] work with it. It's like, ah,

[42:58] I'm making myself wrong for how I feel.

[43:00] And then, it's easy to be like, oh God,

[43:02] I'm doing this all the time. Like, and

[43:04] then that's where the judgement just

[43:05] keeps

[43:07] going to the next thing. It's like,

[43:09] sweetie, it's okay. It makes sense.

[43:13] It makes sense you feel this feel this

[43:15] way.

[43:17] One of my other favorite phrases is,

[43:19] tell me all about it. Tell me all about

[43:22] it because

[43:24] what happens is, we want to feel better

[43:27] and we want it to go away and we want to

[43:29] solve it

[43:31] very quickly because we don't like how

[43:33] it feels. It's not comfortable in here

[43:37] when we're contracted and we're tight

[43:39] and we're heavy and we're constricted

[43:42] and we're

[43:44] heat, heart racing, all of the

[43:46] sensations associated with challenging

[43:49] emotions. They don't feel good. We want

[43:51] them to go away. We're freaking human.

[43:56] But, if we

[43:58] come into this practice with, I want to

[44:01] get rid of it, it actually makes it

[44:03] harder.

[44:06] So, this is like intermediate advanced

[44:09] level

[44:11] work

[44:13] at times.

[44:15] So, it's like

[44:17] I'm not wrong for how I feel. It makes

[44:20] sense. It's okay.

[44:22] Tell me all about it, sweetie.

[44:26] And, you know, you could look at this

[44:28] through the lens of inner child work,

[44:30] the wounded child, you know, that was

[44:32] abused and not seen and

[44:34] suppressed and repressed.

[44:38] So, now you can provide the loving

[44:39] witness and sacred space. Tell me all

[44:42] about it means

[44:44] you know,

[44:45] let me hear everything that's going on,

[44:48] and you get to hold witness for that.

[44:53] And then, you can say it makes sense you

[44:56] feel this way.

[44:59] Of course.

[45:01] Of course you're angry. Of course you're

[45:03] sad. Of course you're scared.

[45:08] And it's this instant

[45:11] soothing

[45:12] and relaxation that happens inside of

[45:15] the

[45:17] spiritual heart and even physical.

[45:22] Now, the other part of it is

[45:25] what if you actually need to like

[45:28] do something? Like, we've talked a lot

[45:30] about sort of relationship dynamics with

[45:33] this, but

[45:35] it might be

[45:38] doing something out of your comfort

[45:40] zone, or doing something you've

[45:42] procrastinated on, or things like that.

[45:47] Where

[45:48] how many of you can relate? Like, you're

[45:50] going to quit drinking coffee

[45:53] tomorrow.

[45:56] And then, today's day one, and then you

[45:58] have the coffee, and then you're beating

[46:00] yourself up for it, right? Like

[46:02] self-gaslighting can get into that, too.

[46:09] So,

[46:10] you know, we we at times where it's

[46:13] appropriate, you want to couple this

[46:14] with loving accountability.

[46:19] You know, you get to learn to be

[46:21] sovereign in yourself. You get to learn

[46:24] to be empowered.

[46:27] So, you get to learn to take that little

[46:29] wounded child

[46:32] and parent them, parent them, him, or

[46:34] her.

[46:37] And sometimes that might mean doing

[46:39] something

[46:41] uncomfortable, something you don't want

[46:43] to do.

[46:46] And so, then you can say, "Sweetie, it

[46:48] makes sense you feel this way. Tell me

[46:50] all about it. And

[46:54] can we, you know,

[46:58] just take a baby step right now?"

[47:01] Something like that.

[47:08] Yeah.

[47:11] That sounds really difficult, Chanders.

[47:14] And so, in the context of

[47:15] self-gaslighting,

[47:18] if there's any part of you that is

[47:21] making yourself wrong for how you feel

[47:23] about that situation, that's where this

[47:26] would apply.

[47:30] If you're having stories like, "I

[47:32] shouldn't complain. I'm being too much.

[47:34] I, you know, I'm making a big deal." I'm

[47:36] I'm just saying as examples. If there's

[47:38] any sorts of

[47:40] thoughts,

[47:41] there might not be.

[47:44] But, in the context of self-

[47:47] gaslighting,

[47:49] get look at okay. Yeah, given the

[47:51] situation, it makes sense I feel pissed

[47:53] off.

[47:55] Given everything, of course I feel this

[47:57] way.

[48:00] And that can also help

[48:03] discharge the energy to where

[48:06] if

[48:08] you know, whatever anyone's situation

[48:10] is, if you do need to take an action,

[48:13] you're going to be way more grounded and

[48:15] centered when you do it.

[48:19] Because you've

[48:22] you've sort of calmed

[48:25] or come into alignment inside presence

[48:29] with that medicine of self-compassion.

[48:34] So,

[48:36] I'd like to offer those of you here, or

[48:38] if you're watching the replay, a gifted

[48:40] coaching conversation with me if it

[48:42] feels useful and you haven't received

[48:45] that with me before.

[48:47] And we can look at your specific

[48:49] situation.

[48:51] Or if you need help finding,

[48:55] you know, specifically where this shows

[48:57] up for you, how to work with it. Might

[48:59] be a certain situation.

[49:01] This is a gift with no strings attached,

[49:03] so you can send me a message and

[49:06] say, "Self-gaslighting."

[49:10] And we can set that up as a gift.

[49:14] Don't forget to follow me here if you

[49:16] haven't already.

[49:18] I will be posting more live streams with

[49:24] similar content, you know,

[49:25] relationships, boundaries. I also am

[49:29] an addict [snorts]

[49:30] alcohol and drugs in recovery for a long

[49:33] time and sugar

[49:35] uh for 6 years, which is mhm

[49:39] a passion of mine to

[49:41] help others release sugar addiction.

[49:45] So, stay tuned for lives on that. Well,

[49:47] it's almost Halloween.

[49:49] We're coming into

[49:51] >> [snorts]

[49:51] >> holiday food season for many of us

[49:56] in the Western Hemisphere, Northern

[49:59] Hemisphere.

[50:01] Um

[50:03] So, yeah, and I'll pop up my um

[50:07] course again here. I would really

[50:10] love

[50:13] um your support and listening and

[50:16] engaging with the course as well as

[50:18] giving it a rating. It helps me to get

[50:21] it out more into the community.

[50:24] Sharing it with anyone who it might be

[50:26] relevant for.

[50:28] I appreciate that.

[50:32] Oh, and we do have a few minutes left.

[50:34] So, I had thought, uh which by the way,

[50:37] I'm a tarot and oracle card reader as

[50:39] well as a spiritual life coach and Reiki

[50:41] Master Teacher.

[50:43] And on Sundays, I

[50:47] do

[50:49] a

[50:51] uh

[50:53] collective card reading every week along

[50:56] with Reiki and ancestral clearing.

[51:00] Um

[51:03] And so, I just thought

[51:06] for the self-gaslighting, it would be

[51:09] interesting to see get a couple cards of

[51:11] advice from spirit to see what spirit

[51:14] says

[51:15] for you all here about this

[51:18] really

[51:20] um powerful concept.

[51:23] Oh, wonderful, Teresa.

[51:29] Jed, I hear you on that.

[51:32] Yeah, I mean, you know,

[51:34] it's a great blanket advice for for most

[51:38] of us. No alcohol, sugar, legal drugs.

[51:43] Um are you saying you do that to

[51:45] specific people?

[51:49] And Teresa, I love that example for you

[51:51] because this is this is what I was just

[51:54] saying like as far as habits or

[51:56] behaviors or addictions even.

[51:59] Um we make ourselves wrong. Like there's

[52:02] such a shame spiral that happens.

[52:06] And I do this with my coaching as well

[52:08] of, you know, giving daily

[52:10] accountability support or weekly

[52:12] depending on the client.

[52:14] >> [snorts]

[52:14] >> Um as far as changing addictions and

[52:16] patterns and behaviors and habits.

[52:19] And, you know, we work with [snorts]

[52:22] this all the time.

[52:24] Um

[52:27] you know, so it's like okay, if for your

[52:30] example, if you don't get out of bed

[52:33] then it's so easy just sit there and

[52:35] feel like And it's not even

[52:37] conscious thinking, right? It's just

[52:38] this heavy feeling and this like

[52:41] and like this it's a shitty feeling,

[52:44] right?

[52:45] So

[52:47] shame is not going to make anyone change

[52:50] ever because it's never worked.

[52:53] You can look at, you know, most of us

[52:55] think about your own life. If shame

[52:57] worked to get you to change, you would

[52:58] have decades ago, I always say.

[53:01] >> [snorts]

[53:01] >> You know, we can change with loving

[53:05] self-compassion, right? So

[53:08] saying it makes sense that I don't want

[53:10] to get out of bed. It makes sense that I

[53:12] feel this way.

[53:14] It shifts the energy

[53:16] to where it releases

[53:19] tension, it releases resistance.

[53:22] And then wow, isn't it interesting? Now

[53:24] I suddenly

[53:26] feel like maybe I could get out of bed,

[53:28] maybe even just for 1 minute.

[53:30] So thank you for sharing that.

[53:38] Yeah, that's great, Jed, that your heart

[53:41] wants to help friends and society, your

[53:44] heart's in the right place. Chandra is a

[53:46] cannabis patient working on sugar

[53:48] addiction.

[53:49] Yeah, I can imagine. I mean, I for me, I

[53:53] was not a patient. I was an addict with

[53:56] marijuana.

[53:57] And so I I well know

[54:00] uh what it does to appetite for sure. I

[54:02] don't know if that

[54:04] is related for you, but I know that was

[54:06] my case.

[54:08] >> [snorts]

[54:08] >> So,

[54:12] of course.

[54:14] I always say you can't make this

[54:15] up. Those of you that know me know.

[54:18] So, we have the four of pentacles.

[54:22] So, just look at the energy of this card

[54:24] in relation to

[54:26] um

[54:28] self-gaslighting, [snorts]

[54:30] right? And

[54:32] you know, the world has hurt us. I mean,

[54:37] that's what happens, right? In survival.

[54:40] And it's not about being a victim. It's

[54:42] just noticing like it's a human

[54:45] experience.

[54:47] And so when that happens, we

[54:49] we we want to protect ourselves and we

[54:52] we turn in and we and then we can turn

[54:54] against ourselves even, right? So, I

[54:57] feel like more this is about the energy

[55:00] of how this feels, like this

[55:02] contraction.

[55:05] And and it's like we're trying to

[55:07] protect ourselves from the world, but

[55:09] then we turn on ourselves

[55:12] as well.

[55:16] So, it's just about that softening

[55:18] towards our self and being on our own

[55:20] team and being on our own side and

[55:24] making it okay

[55:27] for how we feel.

[55:29] And I think too, you know, we have this

[55:32] coin purse.

[55:33] Like your treasure is inside of you.

[55:37] Your treasure is inside of you.

[55:40] And even this pain and this suffering

[55:43] can be transmuted to gold.

[55:48] Then we have the two of wands. So,

[55:51] it's like what's possible. This to me

[55:53] right now in this context is a card of

[55:56] possibility.

[55:58] She's looking out the window. She's got

[56:01] a map. She's got a globe.

[56:03] She's contemplating.

[56:05] So, so what

[56:08] new possibility opens up for you when

[56:11] you start shifting

[56:13] these deep-rooted dynamics

[56:17] for yourself?

[56:24] Because it's moving out of survival into

[56:26] creation. You know, all of this is

[56:29] because of survival.

[56:33] So, when we we come out of that

[56:35] contraction and then and then we see, we

[56:38] can look up, we can look around, we can

[56:40] look at the sky, we can see the world,

[56:43] we can see new possibility.

[56:47] Mhm.

[56:48] Thank you, Chris. I love what you're

[56:50] saying.

[56:53] Yeah, totally. Be the change you want to

[56:55] see in the world as Gandhi said, I think

[56:57] it was.

[56:59] And yeah, it all changes with with

[57:01] ourselves, you know, as within so

[57:04] without. We're all a microcosm of the

[57:07] macrocosm of humanity and what we're

[57:09] all, you know, on this healing journey

[57:11] and what we're doing is really

[57:12] important.

[57:14] So, look at what comes from this, this

[57:18] beautiful strength card.

[57:22] The lion, she's got half a lion face.

[57:26] She's got her heart on that necklace.

[57:30] And then the cute little lamb, the lamb

[57:32] of innocence.

[57:36] You know, within we are fully innocent

[57:39] and we get to go back to that. That's

[57:42] the essence of what we came in with. You

[57:44] know, I always talk about babies

[57:48] and

[57:49] um

[57:50] you know, the energy that that babies

[57:53] and small children have. It's just so

[57:56] pure and beautiful and innocent and that

[57:58] is still all within here underneath the

[58:00] conditioning.

[58:02] And when you can start healing this, you

[58:04] can access that inner strength, that

[58:06] inner innocence.

[58:08] You can become empowered, a self-led

[58:10] leader.

[58:12] And that's what, you know,

[58:13] I see as my goal in spiritual life

[58:16] coaching that I do. So, if you feel

[58:18] called to connect in that way, send me a

[58:20] message if you would like that gifted

[58:22] conversation that I offered

[58:24] or the PDF

[58:26] that outlines

[58:29] the phrases that I spoke about,

[58:32] um get in touch. So, I will see you all

[58:35] this weekend if not before.

[58:38] I don't think I'll be scheduling a live

[58:40] in between now and Sunday,

[58:43] but more will be revealed and if you

[58:46] follow me, you'll get a notification.

[58:49] Um

[58:51] and again, of course, don't forget to

[58:54] do my course here, end of

[58:56] self-gaslighting on Insight Timer if you

[58:58] have premium.

[59:00] And um sending you all so much love.

[59:04] Thank you so much for joining me

[59:07] and namaste.

[59:13] Thank you, Chris. Bye-bye.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Natalie Speakman describes self-gaslighting in her livestream as not allowing your own feelings to be okay or valid. It shows up as internal verdicts like 'I'm overreacting' or 'it wasn't a big deal' that dismiss an emotion before you have examined it.
A common sign is making yourself wrong for how you feel, then trying to move past the feeling quickly. Speakman says she realized she was doing this when she used morning meditation to push away a hurt she had not yet let herself feel. Noticing the verdict that follows a feeling is a good first step.
Spiritual bypassing is using spiritual language or practices such as meditation to skip over unresolved emotion. Speakman describes realizing that she was trying to spiritually bypass her upset with meditation, even though the practice looked correct from the outside.
The video's description lists how childhood emotional invalidation shapes self-doubt as a topic Speakman covers. The reasoning is that if early feelings were dismissed, you may learn to treat your own emotions as the problem, a pattern that can persist into adulthood.
The video description states that emotions are not mistakes but messengers. The idea is to ask what a feeling is communicating, rather than immediately judging whether it is justified or correct.
The video description advertises a guided breathwork practice to reconnect with your emotional truth, along with four practical steps to stop self-gaslighting. The transcript excerpt available for this article does not detail those steps, so viewers will need the full livestream for them.
Speakman says her first Insight Timer course, The End of Self-Gaslighting, covers the concept in more depth for premium members. She also mentions a free PDF on the topic that viewers can request, and lists her website and links in her profile.
