[0:22] >> All right. Good morning, everyone.
[0:24] >> Morning.
[0:25] >> Is this on? Am I audible?
[0:27] I'll take care of that in no time, I'm
[0:29] sure.
[0:31] That's my one my one weakness. So, if
[0:33] somebody in the back if about halfway
[0:35] through I start diminishing and getting
[0:38] quieter and quieter,
[0:39] feel free to just throw a hand up or
[0:42] point at me or
[0:44] throw something light
[0:47] my direction because I just I just have
[0:49] a habit of getting quieter and quieter
[0:51] as I go.
[0:53] So. But, what a beautiful chant that is.
[0:56] I know here in Hollywood they've been
[0:57] doing that for a number of years. And
[0:59] I'm just always amazed at how inclusive
[1:02] that is of everything that I would ever
[1:04] want to say. So, I could really just sit
[1:07] down
[1:08] and have you guys read that little
[1:10] article again
[1:11] in there.
[1:13] I uh
[1:16] I like to start with a with a Hafiz
[1:17] poem.
[1:19] Mostly because uh you know, I I you
[1:21] know, I grew up a a Christian going to
[1:23] church and uh
[1:26] a lot
[1:27] actually.
[1:28] And uh you know,
[1:30] that didn't last through my college
[1:32] years. I kind of wandered off into the
[1:34] world for a while.
[1:36] And uh
[1:38] but that that
[1:42] that lasting taste of that of that
[1:45] beauty, you know, if if if somehow we
[1:47] could get what religion has to offer out
[1:50] from behind religion,
[1:52] >> [laughter]
[1:53] >> that would be really the greatest thing
[1:54] in the world, you know? It's like I had
[1:57] this wonderful experience in Colorado. I
[1:59] was
[2:00] meeting with a guy his name was Tom and
[2:02] he had been going to AA for
[2:05] for a long time and had been sober for
[2:07] 30 years.
[2:09] And he had been working on this project
[2:11] of AA version two
[2:14] where he's where he wanted to be able to
[2:17] take
[2:18] those truths deeper, you know, to kind
[2:20] of
[2:21] divorce it from just the alcoholism and
[2:23] take it into a spiritual life to develop
[2:25] himself more fully as a person. And so
[2:27] he and I were working on this
[2:29] this idea together.
[2:31] And
[2:33] one of the things that was super
[2:34] interesting was that he invited me to go
[2:35] to an AA group. I had never been to one.
[2:38] And
[2:39] I thought that would be interesting. So
[2:41] I went to this AA group and at the end
[2:43] of it I had to say to myself this was
[2:46] the best church I've ever been to.
[2:49] You know, it was
[2:51] the level of sincerity that I found
[2:54] there. I've never seen a church that
[2:56] even comes close. You know, in church in
[2:58] religion for some reason when we come we
[3:00] go into this performative state. You
[3:02] know, like we want to put on our best
[3:05] clothes, our best dispositions. We want
[3:07] everybody to think that we had the best
[3:10] insight on the lecture that morning.
[3:12] That our lives are great and wonderful
[3:16] and it's really counter to everything
[3:17] that what Sanga is really useful for is
[3:20] really helpful for.
[3:22] You know, the these these domains of
[3:24] grace is how I like to think of religion
[3:26] really. It gives you permission to be
[3:28] who you are. It gives you permission to
[3:30] be the mess that you are and the Sanga
[3:34] our time together if we're doing it
[3:37] right is us giving each other permission
[3:40] to be the mess that you are
[3:42] and to be there for you. To be there to
[3:44] support you and to be there and and
[3:47] help you find it some inspiration. Help
[3:49] you find the words. Help you find the
[3:52] thought, help you find whatever
[3:54] grounding that you need. And I think
[3:57] that that that's an amazing thing that I
[4:00] would go to a to an AA meeting and find
[4:02] [snorts] that there more than I have
[4:04] found it in any of And this is not a
[4:06] criticism of you guys this morning at
[4:08] all, but just more than I find in any of
[4:10] these religious
[4:13] atmospheres, which are supposed to be
[4:16] exactly that. A place where we don't
[4:19] have any pretenses. We can all admit,
[4:20] "Yeah, I've been trying this for years.
[4:24] Look at me, you know?"
[4:25] Here we are.
[4:27] It's like we keep pushing. And
[4:30] we need we need a space where that's all
[4:32] right. You know, we need a space where
[4:34] it's like, "Yeah, my life's a mess right
[4:36] now." I think of Ramakrishna and and his
[4:39] relationship with alcoholism, which was
[4:41] not none personally, but his friend
[4:44] Girish, his one of his disciples, Girish
[4:46] Ghosh, was an alcoholic. And would often
[4:48] drink and come visit Ramakrishna at the
[4:51] temple while he was drunk.
[4:54] And abuse him at times, say say very
[4:56] meaning thing mean things to him,
[4:58] inappropriate things all the time. And
[5:00] the devotees at the that were at the
[5:02] temple complained to Ramakrishna, like,
[5:04] "Why do you let that drunk come here?
[5:06] You know, he's always so disruptive and
[5:07] he's always treating you with disrespect
[5:09] and this place is, you know, should
[5:12] should be more respected than that." And
[5:14] and Ramakrishna literally to their face
[5:16] just told them to shut up.
[5:18] He said, "Shut up. You cannot see what I
[5:20] can see in this man." And of course, we
[5:22] know that Girish ultimately became a
[5:24] saint.
[5:25] But the the beautiful thing about that,
[5:27] and I don't know where I'm going with
[5:28] all this, to be honest with you.
[5:30] But
[5:31] the beautiful thing to me was is that
[5:34] Ramakrishna, who's who's my chosen
[5:36] ideal, you know, my ideal for the
[5:38] perfect spiritual person,
[5:41] had a drunkard alcoholic friend who came
[5:45] to him regularly uh teaching and he
[5:47] never turned him away
[5:49] and never told him to stop drinking.
[5:52] Never told him to stop drinking because
[5:54] what alcoholic doesn't know that they
[5:56] need to stop drinking, right? I mean,
[5:58] it's that's our own souls cry out for
[6:01] that. And actually, I think from my
[6:04] little bit of experience around it, it
[6:05] seems like that almost becomes the
[6:07] catch-22 at the end is like you're
[6:08] knowing that you need to transcend this
[6:11] and your inability thus far to transcend
[6:14] that, and it sort of becomes a
[6:15] self-feeding circle, you know? It's like
[6:18] where you drink to escape the feeling
[6:20] bad about drinking or not being able to
[6:22] overcome this.
[6:24] And the thing that I loved about that
[6:25] scene with Ramakrishna, you can watch it
[6:27] online. There's a I can't remember the
[6:28] name, but there's a movie done in 1963
[6:30] about the life of Ramakrishna, and
[6:32] there's a scene that they put in a
[6:33] YouTube clip where Girish comes to
[6:36] Ramakrishna, and he says to him,
[6:39] "You know, I've always considered myself
[6:40] to be the king of intoxication."
[6:43] He says, "You know, I've I've drunk the
[6:45] best wines and the best alcohols." And
[6:48] he said, "And I thought I was the king
[6:49] of renuncia of of intoxication until I
[6:52] met you."
[6:54] Right? [clears throat] Ramakrishna, he
[6:55] says,
[6:56] "I see you and and two or three times
[6:58] every time I come to see you, you go
[7:00] into these ecstatic states of divine
[7:02] bliss where joy just beams on your face
[7:05] and tears of happiness roll down your
[7:07] eyes." And he said, "Me and all of my
[7:09] efforts have not even come close to that
[7:12] level of bliss.
[7:14] Can you give me that bliss?" And
[7:16] Ramakrishna laughs and smiles and said,
[7:18] "Yes, yes, of course I can. Come, come
[7:21] along. I shall give it to you." And
[7:23] Girish gets excited, and then he
[7:25] has a moment of realization, he says,
[7:28] "Mhm, will I have to stop drinking?"
[7:31] And Ramakrishna laughs again and says,
[7:34] "No.
[7:35] That is only an external thing. The
[7:37] Mother will remove that when she's
[7:39] ready."
[7:41] Right?
[7:42] Gave gave him that insight. That's
[7:44] that's an external thing. That's not who
[7:46] you are. That's not an identity for you.
[7:49] That's an external thing. And that the
[7:51] beloved will remove that when it's time.
[7:53] Right now, it's serving a purpose. Who
[7:56] knows what that what that what that
[7:57] would be or what that was.
[7:59] But he was so
[8:01] accepting of Girish in that sense that
[8:04] there's even a scene where Girish has
[8:06] stumbled into into Ramakrishna's room.
[8:09] He's drunk.
[8:10] And he doesn't have his wine bottle with
[8:12] him.
[8:13] And Ramakrishna turns to one of the
[8:15] brahmacharis and
[8:18] >> [laughter]
[8:20] [snorts]
[8:21] >> This is why I love Ramakrishna. He turns
[8:23] to one of the brahmacharis and he says,
[8:25] "It seems that Girish might have
[8:26] forgotten his bottle of wine out in the
[8:29] cab.
[8:30] Can you go run out and before the cab
[8:32] takes off and just check and see if
[8:34] Girish's bottle of wine is in the back?"
[8:37] And so the brahmachari
[8:39] >> [laughter]
[8:40] >> probably did the old the weirdest task
[8:42] of his whole brahmachari career. Went
[8:44] out and got a Girish's went out there
[8:46] and actually did find the bottle of wine
[8:47] in the backseat of the cab and he brings
[8:49] it in and gives it back to Girish.
[8:53] And I'm like, this is a very different
[8:55] picture of divinity than what I'm used
[8:58] to.
[8:59] You know, where
[9:01] when you walk into a divine presence,
[9:04] that is the feeling. The The only
[9:06] message I've ever gotten directly from a
[9:08] divine character was that it's okay.
[9:13] That there is in me a purity and a
[9:15] completeness
[9:17] that self of myself
[9:20] which is divine by its nature. In
[9:22] Christianity, the image of God that's
[9:24] been placed within us or that kingdom of
[9:26] God that exists within us.
[9:28] That that's our nature. And when God,
[9:31] the divine, looks at you, he sees that
[9:34] purity. He sees your potential reached.
[9:38] He sees you on the day of your
[9:40] realization.
[9:41] He doesn't see you as you see yourself.
[9:45] And that's the power of a Jesus, of a
[9:47] Buddha, of a Ramakrishna.
[9:49] Is that they see that in you and they
[9:52] speak to that in you and they won't let
[9:55] you drag them into your terrible stories
[9:58] about yourself.
[9:59] They will believe in you and they will
[10:01] hope in you and they will trust in you
[10:04] and they will encourage you even when
[10:06] you yourself have long ago given up on
[10:09] yourself in that way.
[10:12] And uh
[10:13] this this is always my dream.
[10:16] Of all sanghas, of all spiritual
[10:18] organizations everywhere in the world.
[10:20] To come to this place of such a sweet
[10:22] love, of such a sweet commitment so that
[10:24] we understand when we come together on a
[10:26] Sunday or whenever we meet
[10:29] that it's not to get anything.
[10:32] Right? This this sangha is your
[10:34] opportunity to give.
[10:36] What you have been gleaning from your
[10:39] personal practice during the week.
[10:42] Right? From your daily studies with the
[10:44] divine, from your daily
[10:46] digging through the world's scriptures,
[10:48] your daily prayers, your meditations,
[10:50] your efforts to know this divine nature
[10:52] within yourself.
[10:54] That's where the work happens. That's
[10:56] where you're going to realize God.
[10:59] It's not going to be here presumably.
[11:01] Although I highly encourage it if
[11:03] anybody's up for it this morning.
[11:05] You know, that that's that's where your
[11:07] your your spiritual life happens. Your
[11:09] spiritual life happens when you're alone
[11:11] with your beloved.
[11:13] And it happens when when that boundary
[11:16] begins to break and you start to
[11:18] understand through that little one hour
[11:20] or 15 minutes, whatever time you do
[11:22] every day with the beloved.
[11:25] That when that bound when that boundary
[11:26] breaks and you start to realize wow, my
[11:28] life is actually my practice. It's not
[11:31] this hour of meditation, It's not this
[11:33] hour of reading.
[11:35] It's It's all of my prayers during the
[11:37] day.
[11:38] You know, every thought of your mind in
[11:40] the day is a prayer. Every action of
[11:43] your body is a prayer
[11:46] uh in a day.
[11:47] And the divine mother is saying yes to
[11:50] every single one of those prayers. And
[11:53] you're like, "Well, then why am I not
[11:54] getting the booty?
[11:56] Right? Why am I not bringing in the
[11:57] treasure here?"
[11:59] It's because she takes all of your
[12:00] prayers,
[12:01] all of your thoughts for the day, all of
[12:03] your actions for the day,
[12:05] and she averages them together and gives
[12:08] you the sum, gives you the result of
[12:10] that, of your prayers.
[12:12] Right? So, if you were praying, "Oh, I
[12:13] want to be rich and famous." And then
[12:15] you slept through the audition,
[12:17] and at the end of the day you're like,
[12:19] "But I prayed for rich to be rich and
[12:21] famous and I'm not. Why?" And she said,
[12:23] "Well, you also prayed for a nap during
[12:25] the time of the audition.
[12:27] So, we we gave you good sleep through
[12:29] the audition,
[12:31] and we gave you your dream of being rich
[12:33] and famous,
[12:34] and this is what you've got.
[12:37] Right? And so, it's a matter of
[12:38] understanding your life that that when
[12:40] when Vivekananda is making this call to
[12:42] one-pointedness, we talk about how
[12:44] meditation is having a singular thought,
[12:46] you know, like oil poured from one
[12:48] container to another.
[12:50] And we always make it a uh uh uh
[12:52] we put it in a glass case up on a shrine
[12:54] somewhere as if this is some ultimate
[12:57] state that you can hope for reaching at
[12:59] some distant point in the future when
[13:01] your realization will dawn and finally
[13:04] religion will be worthwhile.
[13:06] Right?
[13:07] That's That's That is so other than
[13:09] what's really happening. Your need for
[13:11] this singular thought, this need for
[13:13] controlling your mind, is so that you
[13:16] can become aware of yourself as a temple
[13:19] at any moment during the day so that you
[13:21] can touch that marvelous love of the
[13:25] divine, which means a love that doesn't
[13:27] have a cause.
[13:28] Right? That's what divine love is. It's
[13:30] love that doesn't have a cause. God
[13:33] doesn't need a reason to love, right?
[13:36] The divine mother doesn't need a reason
[13:37] from you to love you.
[13:40] She sees an abundance of those reasons
[13:43] when she sees the potential of your own
[13:45] divinity in you. Your potential to love.
[13:49] Your potential to to nurture, your
[13:51] potential to forgive, your potential to
[13:54] care.
[13:55] Right? To reach out.
[13:57] And that all of this religion, all of
[13:59] all we're trying to do is to tear off
[14:02] that that wound of of ego.
[14:06] Right? We That's what ego is. Ego's a
[14:08] scab that's grown over a life lived
[14:12] without knowing who we are.
[14:15] Living a life without knowing our
[14:16] nature.
[14:17] And so we wound ourselves all the time
[14:19] by feeding ourselves things that aren't
[14:21] helpful to our spirit, that aren't
[14:23] helpful to our development, that aren't
[14:24] helpful to our love.
[14:26] And we get into weird situations, and we
[14:29] we get into broken relationships, and we
[14:31] get into fights, and we get into
[14:33] disagreements, and we stop talking to
[14:35] friends. Right? And so the ego has to
[14:38] slowly grow to provide this buffer of
[14:42] unreality around us so that we can keep
[14:46] playing bumper cars trying to figure out
[14:48] what life is about and yet hold
[14:50] something together, you know, some sense
[14:52] of self in the middle of it.
[14:55] I had a beautiful time up in New York
[14:57] one time on
[14:59] I was secretly on vacation.
[15:03] I I didn't feel good as a monk asking if
[15:05] I could go spend a weekend in New York
[15:06] City, and so uh me and Sushil decided we
[15:09] were going to go on a retreat to the
[15:10] Ridgely Manor, which is another 2 hours
[15:12] up the Hudson from the city. But on the
[15:14] way we were going to stop in the city
[15:15] since we had to drive through there to
[15:17] get there, of course.
[15:18] And so we planned this little uh, in New
[15:21] York on the way to the retreat. And I
[15:24] was sitting in Central Park on a
[15:25] Saturday and it was beautiful. It was a
[15:27] beautiful spring Saturday. And the New
[15:30] Yorkers were out in full. I mean, there
[15:32] was vi- you know, your street performers
[15:34] out there. I just wanted to particular
[15:37] this black man was playing violin. Oh my
[15:40] god. So beautifully and and just
[15:43] something that could only happen in New
[15:44] York. This Adonis of a woman comes
[15:47] walking up and stand there listening to
[15:48] him. And then just start singing along
[15:52] in this gorgeous
[15:54] voice. And I'm sitting there up on a
[15:56] hill. Sushila is sleeping. I'm sitting
[15:58] there on this little lawn just watching
[15:59] this. There's a croquet game happening
[16:01] in the background on the right. And
[16:03] there's a family walking their new
[16:05] poodle, you know, up the pathway. And
[16:07] I'm watching all of this and I just
[16:10] suddenly had this weird
[16:13] >> [laughter]
[16:13] >> sense of parental pride.
[16:16] Like I was watching this scene of just
[16:18] beauty. Everybody doing something
[16:20] beautiful.
[16:22] And I thought to myself, every single
[16:23] person here woke up this morning into a
[16:26] world they know nothing about. They
[16:28] don't know why they were put here. They
[16:30] don't know what this life is about. They
[16:32] don't know what they're supposed to
[16:33] accomplish. They don't know what the one
[16:35] most important thing is in their life.
[16:38] They don't know how to control
[16:39] themselves. They don't know blah blah
[16:40] blah blah blah.
[16:42] And I said, but look at this.
[16:45] In all that they have to be afraid of,
[16:48] in all that they may have to be ashamed
[16:50] of, in all of the terror and brokenness
[16:53] of what might be going on in their
[16:54] lives,
[16:56] every single one of them has found
[16:58] something beautiful to do today.
[17:01] Every single person here has found a
[17:03] family where they can create and try and
[17:06] nurture love. I've got a group of
[17:08] friends over here that's trying to play
[17:10] a game of croquet and enjoy each other's
[17:12] company in this beautiful sunshine.
[17:16] And I thought, what an amazing thing it
[17:19] is to be a human being.
[17:22] What an amazing thing it is to have this
[17:25] moment of pure potential right now.
[17:28] That if you could see this moment as it
[17:30] is and not as your mind has been telling
[17:33] you that it is.
[17:35] If you could experience this moment as
[17:37] it is, you would be in an ecstatic state
[17:40] of ecstasy. A state of what is samadhi,
[17:44] they call it.
[17:46] Right? Because the nature of this room,
[17:48] the nature of this group, seeming group
[17:51] of people,
[17:53] is pure love.
[17:55] No egoism. Egoism is unnatural to us.
[17:58] That's why we have noisy minds. Because
[18:01] we insert that idea of me and mine into
[18:03] a universal mind. And that's the
[18:05] antithesis of peace, you know. A
[18:08] universal mind is universal. It lives
[18:11] for the common good. It lives for the
[18:13] welfare of the whole.
[18:16] Right?
[18:18] And what a potential that is that we
[18:19] have in each one of us.
[18:21] There's this little poem to get
[18:24] back to the beginning.
[18:26] Uh called The Lute Will Beg. And it's by
[18:28] Hafiz. And he says, you need to become a
[18:30] pen in the sun's hand.
[18:33] We need for the earth to sing through
[18:35] our pores and our eyes.
[18:38] The body will again become restless
[18:40] until your soul paints all of its beauty
[18:43] on the sky.
[18:44] Don't tell me dear ones that what Hafiz
[18:47] says is not true.
[18:49] For when the heart tastes its glorious
[18:51] destiny,
[18:53] and when you awake to your constant
[18:55] need, to our constant need for your
[18:58] love, God's lute will beg for your
[19:02] hands.
[19:03] Right?
[19:04] That if you for a moment come to realize
[19:07] what it means to be a human being and
[19:09] what the potential is of you
[19:12] in that role.
[19:14] You'll explode open and paint on the sky
[19:17] with the energy that's in you.
[19:19] Because to give love
[19:21] is to pour it out into another container
[19:23] of love and to get it back.
[19:26] You know, all the scriptures say I I
[19:28] gave a lecture in high school
[19:30] >> [laughter]
[19:31] >> at a church
[19:32] where I hid a you know, I was giving a
[19:34] lecture the lecture on you the measure
[19:36] that you use in which to give is the
[19:39] measure that you would you be used to
[19:41] receive. And so I was terribly clever at
[19:44] that time in my life and I dragged this
[19:46] big wash tub up and had managed to slip
[19:49] it under the podium.
[19:50] Right? So my big coup de grace at the
[19:52] end was to pull out this big measure
[19:55] this giant tub.
[19:56] And to to to understand that this is
[19:59] true.
[20:00] That if you learn to love freely
[20:04] your life will be filled with love.
[20:07] That if you don't have any faith in God
[20:11] then stop trying to have faith in God
[20:13] and use one of his other names. Use
[20:16] love.
[20:17] And have faith in love. Right? Nobody
[20:20] has to convince you that love exists.
[20:23] Nobody has to convince you that love is
[20:25] awesome. That love is a solution to
[20:27] almost every problem.
[20:29] Right? And so instead of talking about
[20:31] God this morning, we'll talk about love.
[20:34] And we'll talk about our potential of
[20:36] being able to set our ego aside to take
[20:39] that wounded scab off as it were.
[20:42] And to express our divine nature full of
[20:45] a pure love that we have for each other
[20:47] that's uncaused. It's not because you're
[20:49] a great person.
[20:51] It's not because I'm a great person.
[20:53] It's because the beloved is a great
[20:55] source of divine love.
[20:58] Right?
[20:59] And that we come into this security of
[21:01] living not based on all the things that
[21:03] are changing. Right? Because this world
[21:05] is a constant flow of unrepeating
[21:07] change. There's no stability here.
[21:10] You're not going to find what you want
[21:11] here.
[21:12] Right? In the In this material world.
[21:15] Because it's it's completely unstable.
[21:17] Everything is what it is only for a
[21:18] moment and then it changes and becomes
[21:20] something else and it's constant like
[21:23] that.
[21:24] Right? So, this is why we go within and
[21:27] we find that treasure that the beloved
[21:29] has placed there at the time your body
[21:31] began to form.
[21:33] You know, that image of God, that image
[21:35] of pure love, that Satchidananda as we
[21:38] like to call it as Vedantists.
[21:41] To find that space in there so that you
[21:43] understand that your value in this world
[21:45] is not on what you're contributing.
[21:48] It's not on what you're producing. It's
[21:50] not on the money you're making or the
[21:52] charities you're giving.
[21:54] Your importance on this world is your
[21:57] ability to love infinitely.
[22:00] Your beauty is because of the divinity
[22:03] that is refreshed in you at every
[22:04] moment.
[22:06] That you are always pure. You are always
[22:09] free. You are always loved infinitely by
[22:12] the divine.
[22:13] And that if you can take your eyes off
[22:15] of this this intoxicating play of
[22:19] constant unrepeating change
[22:21] and put it on the most boring thing in
[22:23] your world,
[22:25] the heart,
[22:27] where love is a constant hum of bliss,
[22:30] but unchanging,
[22:32] so that your mind long ago pushed it out
[22:34] of
[22:35] perception.
[22:36] If you can dig into this most boring
[22:39] place in your heart and see it for the
[22:41] first time again
[22:43] and experience an infinite divine love,
[22:46] that is why you're valuable.
[22:49] Because that potential is always in you.
[22:53] That possibility is always yours.
[22:57] And that in any moment of this day, you
[23:00] can take the purity of the moment and
[23:02] slough off all of your past and all of
[23:04] your anxieties of the future
[23:06] and just be here in this moment with
[23:09] your divine beloved expressing love for
[23:13] no reason other than it's what you are.
[23:17] The purpose of life is not a sentence.
[23:19] It can't be placed in a sentence. Why?
[23:21] Because life has been this singular
[23:23] moment
[23:25] that has never begun and never ended.
[23:27] And there's no room for a sentence in
[23:29] this moment.
[23:31] Right? This moment is infinitely small
[23:34] or infinitely large. It's both.
[23:37] Right?
[23:39] But this moment is where life is
[23:40] happening.
[23:42] And this moment is always pure no matter
[23:44] what time has brought through it, no
[23:45] matter what changes have passed through
[23:47] it. This steady moment that we have
[23:50] constantly experienced is the only thing
[23:53] that's real.
[23:55] When Ramakrishna says, you know, that
[23:57] which is changing is unreal.
[24:00] That which is unchanging alone is real.
[24:04] Right? And normally we go looking, oh,
[24:06] what's unchanging? What's unchanging?
[24:08] It's this moment
[24:11] through which this world passes
[24:13] that is always the same.
[24:16] This moment that has never begun and
[24:18] never ended.
[24:19] This moment is I am.
[24:23] Right? And if you're a Christian, you
[24:24] immediately go, oh, wait a minute,
[24:25] that's that's the name of somebody
[24:26] important.
[24:29] That I am is God.
[24:32] This moment is God.
[24:35] This moment can be experienced
[24:39] as deeply as you like. If you could sit
[24:41] in silence in this moment in the
[24:43] presence of that divine such atmananda
[24:45] that is giving you the power and the
[24:47] energy to think and to be and exist at
[24:49] this moment.
[24:50] If you can sit in that place
[24:53] and see God
[24:55] be with God
[24:56] and understand that that potential is
[25:00] what makes you beautiful.
[25:02] That it's not how your hair looks, it's
[25:04] not how well you slept, it's not your
[25:05] weight,
[25:06] not your money,
[25:08] but it's this potential of divinity
[25:11] that makes life valuable,
[25:13] that makes you valuable,
[25:15] and that you don't have to earn your
[25:17] value. You don't have to earn your
[25:18] respect in this world.
[25:21] It's given to you freely by God.
[25:24] And if you can accept that gift,
[25:26] then despite your best best efforts not
[25:29] to,
[25:30] you will start to live a divine life.
[25:32] You will start to be the person that you
[25:35] have always wanted to be.
[25:37] Right?
[25:39] You will finally break out and have that
[25:41] success
[25:43] so that you can,
[25:46] you know, paint your story on the sky
[25:50] and live this beautiful and divine life
[25:53] in a meaningful way. Now, I'm going to
[25:55] open up what I think is a lecture for
[25:58] today.
[26:01] All right. So, we're going to walk into
[26:03] the Chandogya Upanishad and we're going
[26:05] to see Narada getting ready to talk to a
[26:08] saint here.
[26:10] He says, "We see the spiritual aspirant
[26:12] Narada approaching a great sage called
[26:14] Sanatkumara."
[26:16] Narada, we are told, had studied all of
[26:18] the branches of learning, art and
[26:20] science and music and philosophy, as
[26:23] well as the sacred scriptures.
[26:26] Right? So, we have a man here who who
[26:28] has studied all of the branches of
[26:30] learning. So, that's not something you
[26:32] can do anymore.
[26:33] When I was younger, you sort of could
[26:34] get a humanities major where you sort of
[26:36] studied everything.
[26:38] But nowadays, it's like you can't even
[26:40] study biology. You have to like study
[26:43] the ear.
[26:44] Right? Because the amount that we now
[26:46] know on the ear is now a 10-year degree,
[26:49] you know, on these things. But here he
[26:51] is coming from a time where you could
[26:53] study all the branches of knowledge
[26:55] and carry on with life. But he says, "I
[26:58] have gained no peace."
[27:01] Right? I've learned all of this
[27:04] and life still stinks.
[27:05] Right? I'm still anxious. I'm still
[27:08] happy one day, depressed another day. I
[27:11] you know, I I love my wife and my kids
[27:13] dearly and then the next day I can't
[27:14] wait to get away from them for 10
[27:16] minutes.
[27:17] Right? What is this constant flux? I
[27:19] cannot find any peace. I have gained no
[27:22] peace. I have studied all of this, but
[27:24] the self I do not know. Right? I don't
[27:28] know what I am.
[27:29] >> [laughter]
[27:30] >> I'm sitting here in this world trying to
[27:32] make a life, trying to figure out what's
[27:34] important, trying to figure out what
[27:35] where's up and where's down.
[27:38] Right?
[27:39] These people telling me I can't do that.
[27:41] These people telling me I should do
[27:42] that. These people saying they have no
[27:44] idea. These people telling me it doesn't
[27:46] matter.
[27:47] And yet my life is a mess and I don't
[27:49] know what to do. He said, "I've heard
[27:51] from great teachers like you that he who
[27:53] knows the self overcomes grief.
[27:57] Grief is my every lot. Please help me I
[28:01] pray to overcome it."
[28:04] So Sanat Kumara teaches him. He says to
[28:07] him, "The infinite is the source of joy.
[28:11] There is no joy in the finite.
[28:14] The infinite is immortal.
[28:18] The finite is mortal.
[28:20] One who knows, meditates upon and
[28:23] realizes the truth of the self, the
[28:26] infinite being,
[28:28] such a one delights in the self, revels
[28:32] in the self, rejoices in the self. He
[28:36] becomes master of himself and master of
[28:39] all the worlds. Slaves are they who do
[28:43] not know this truth."
[28:46] So this infinite being is the source of
[28:49] joy. That infinite being, incidentally,
[28:52] is you.
[28:53] Right?
[28:54] You get There's two campsites available
[28:56] we've talked about in this body. There's
[28:59] two places you get to live. You have to
[29:01] choose which of these two campsites
[29:03] you're going to inhabit.
[29:04] One is up here. And it's It's a zinger
[29:07] of a campsite.
[29:10] It is constantly changing. There are
[29:12] sunsets and sunrises and storms and snow
[29:15] and wind and light and oceans and seas
[29:18] and skis.
[29:19] All of it there, right there at your
[29:21] front. Right?
[29:23] But, it's going to come at you
[29:24] constantly and fast.
[29:26] And you can live there. It's a very
[29:28] exciting place to live. Right? You don't
[29:30] have time to work out anything. It's
[29:32] just coming left and right. And you just
[29:35] kind of wake up one day and find out
[29:37] you're 70 years old and you've been at
[29:39] this campsite. It's like, "Wow, what a
[29:41] ride."
[29:42] The other campsite, not so exciting. Not
[29:45] so exciting. Nothing is changing there.
[29:47] It's just a perfect campsite. You go
[29:50] there, it's the ground is perfect, the
[29:52] tent is always dry. Inside is this
[29:54] fantastic little mat that you can lay
[29:57] on. It's even more comfortable than your
[29:58] bed at home.
[30:00] Right? But, it's always springtime.
[30:03] There's always a bird or two singing.
[30:05] Right?
[30:06] Just stays like that.
[30:10] No excitement at all.
[30:12] Right? This campsite is the one that's
[30:16] here in the shrine of the heart. That's
[30:19] the one that they call the kingdom of
[30:20] God to the Christian.
[30:22] To us, it's a cave in the heart, a space
[30:24] where you can go. Ramakrishna says this
[30:26] is the drawing room of God.
[30:28] This is where God When you go to meet
[30:30] God, this is where he will meet you or
[30:32] she will meet you. Is here in the shrine
[30:34] of your heart.
[30:36] And so, in your meditation, your job is
[30:38] simply to go to the shrine of the heart.
[30:41] Right? You don't have to trick God into
[30:43] meeting you there.
[30:44] You don't have to be a super good person
[30:46] for 3 days prior to it so that he'll be
[30:48] willing to meet you.
[30:50] You have to have enough confidence in
[30:52] the love of God to assume that she's
[30:54] there.
[30:56] And that she's not there in a begrudging
[30:58] way of like, "Oh God, what's she going
[31:00] to pour on me today?"
[31:02] But that she's there in full hope
[31:05] of you.
[31:07] Full encouragement of you.
[31:10] Happy to see you. You know, we hear that
[31:12] God loves us all the time. Uh and it's
[31:15] become frankly meaningless. Right? You
[31:18] see it on a bumper sticker, "God loves
[31:20] you." And I, even as a monk, I I can't
[31:22] not be cynical about that. I can't even
[31:24] say it without making fun of it like,
[31:26] "God loves you." Right? It's like,
[31:30] "That's not what I'm looking for. That's
[31:31] not the God I'm wanting. You know,
[31:33] that's not where it's at." How about a
[31:35] God that likes me?
[31:37] How about that? How about a God who
[31:39] enjoys being with me?
[31:41] A God who's thinking, "Wow, you know,
[31:43] with as much confusion as I gave you to
[31:45] start with, you've done pretty well."
[31:47] All right?
[31:48] A God who's proud of you.
[31:50] A God who's watching you and seeing you
[31:52] struggle and is not at all concerned
[31:55] about the failures.
[31:57] He's only concerned in getting you to
[31:58] hope in yourself one more time, to get
[32:00] up again.
[32:02] All right? Because he knows through all
[32:04] of these failures, you're going to come
[32:05] to the one most important truth.
[32:08] And that is God's grace is infinite.
[32:12] And when you come to know that, that you
[32:13] can come and sit in the presence of your
[32:16] divine beloved
[32:18] and know that everything is okay.
[32:20] All the way down.
[32:22] You don't have to change who you are.
[32:24] You don't have to change what's in your
[32:25] head.
[32:27] You don't have to change your struggles.
[32:28] You don't have to become successful.
[32:32] You just have to sincerely and earnestly
[32:35] want to be in the presence of divine
[32:36] love.
[32:38] Which is not a hard thing to do.
[32:40] If you can shut down your ego, because
[32:42] egos egos tend to not like divine love.
[32:46] Because divine love dissolves egoism.
[32:50] Right?
[32:51] It dissolves an ego.
[32:53] And so when you come and sit in the
[32:54] presence of the divine beloved,
[32:57] you're going to dissolve.
[32:59] Your own favorite things are going to
[33:01] take a backseat to you. Your versions in
[33:04] life are going to take a backseat. Your
[33:06] narratives and dreams and hopes
[33:09] are going to take a backseat. A backseat
[33:11] to what?
[33:12] A backseat to isness.
[33:15] A backseat to this moment.
[33:17] Because this moment is where all of life
[33:19] is happening.
[33:20] Your entire past, the whole job of your
[33:23] past
[33:24] was to deliver you to this moment.
[33:27] It has done that.
[33:29] Now leave it.
[33:31] You don't have to go digging up my
[33:33] mother did this, my father said this.
[33:35] It's because of this that I do that. I
[33:37] do that. It's fun.
[33:39] You know, it's a day at the beach for
[33:40] the mind, running around finding all of
[33:43] its problems,
[33:44] where it left everything.
[33:46] Right?
[33:47] But it's not the answer. The answer is
[33:49] in this moment, because this moment is
[33:51] the only only place where things happen.
[33:54] It's the only place where things can
[33:55] change. Right? It's where your karma is.
[33:59] Right? There's a great misunderstanding
[34:01] about karma
[34:02] in this world.
[34:04] We use karma to explain our situation.
[34:07] That's one of the dumbest things you can
[34:09] do in your whole life. I'll just put it
[34:11] out there bluntly.
[34:12] Right? Because of all of the conditions
[34:15] and circumstances that were necessary
[34:17] for one thing to happen in your life
[34:19] yesterday, you're aware of maybe three
[34:21] of them.
[34:22] And there's billions of reasons that
[34:24] they're there.
[34:25] Right?
[34:27] The point of your past was to deliver
[34:29] you to this moment.
[34:30] To prepare you in the condition that
[34:32] you're at for this moment, right?
[34:36] And this moment is not to be explained.
[34:39] Karma is there to tell you that your
[34:41] destiny lies in your hand.
[34:43] It's not there to explain why you're in
[34:45] the mess that you're in.
[34:48] It's to say that whatever mess you're
[34:50] in,
[34:51] you're in charge. And this moment is
[34:54] where you will change it. Not tomorrow,
[34:56] not yesterday. This is the only place
[34:59] where things can happen, right here and
[35:01] right now.
[35:02] And so don't drag in all of the other
[35:04] stuff because that's from a time with
[35:06] that can't be changed, a time that
[35:08] doesn't exist. It's a concept in your
[35:10] mind. This moment is all there is.
[35:14] You don't have to be you.
[35:16] You don't have to obey your habits. You
[35:18] don't have to be the same person you
[35:20] were yesterday.
[35:22] You can be brand new,
[35:25] unchanged,
[35:26] in this moment as you are, free.
[35:30] Sit down your stories.
[35:33] Sit down your past. Your past is all of
[35:35] your attachments. They are what making
[35:36] are making you discontent.
[35:39] Right? Because you've been out there
[35:40] working so hard.
[35:42] You've got the picket fence. You've got
[35:44] the fairly nice little house.
[35:46] It's all fairly comfortable,
[35:48] but it still needs to be cleaned, right?
[35:53] This moment is your ability to be you,
[35:56] to be completely free in this moment, to
[35:58] be as pure as the moment, as clean as
[36:00] the moment. You don't have to drag in
[36:02] conditions to this moment.
[36:05] This moment you can walk out that door
[36:07] and you can just keep walking as long as
[36:09] you want. You don't have to go home. You
[36:11] don't have to go back to the job. You
[36:13] don't have to go back to the family.
[36:16] These are all your own requirements that
[36:18] you've placed on yourself.
[36:21] And since you've replaced them replaced
[36:23] them all on yourself,
[36:25] you might as well love them.
[36:27] You might as well see them as choices
[36:29] that you've made.
[36:31] And to be in them.
[36:33] But this idea of karma again, let's go
[36:34] back cuz I want to make this clear about
[36:36] it.
[36:37] You know, karma is not about what is
[36:38] happening to you because if you think
[36:40] about karma and it being what happens to
[36:41] you, you're constantly a victim of
[36:43] what's happening to you.
[36:45] Right? You look at your life, you're
[36:46] like, "Oh, I'm not where I want to be.
[36:47] Oh well, that's my karma."
[36:49] Right?
[36:50] Well, what good is that going to do you?
[36:52] Oh, well, that's my karma.
[36:54] So, you're a victim of your karma.
[36:56] Well, good for you. Now what? Right?
[36:59] What karma is about is this moment. It's
[37:01] not what happens to you in this moment.
[37:03] It's what you're able to do with what
[37:05] happens to you in this moment. That's
[37:07] how you know if you have good or bad
[37:08] karma.
[37:10] Right? Most of the time when people talk
[37:11] about good karma, they're just betraying
[37:13] their attachments.
[37:15] You know, "Oh, I won the spelling bee.
[37:18] I've got good karma." It's like,
[37:20] "Okay.
[37:22] Cool."
[37:23] You know?
[37:24] But that's not why you won the spelling
[37:26] bee. You know?
[37:28] It's not because it was good karma.
[37:30] It's like there's this
[37:31] Ramakrishna told me this story. You
[37:33] know, Ramakrishna Swami Prabhavananda
[37:35] told me this story
[37:37] about two men. He said, "Now, these two
[37:39] men lost their ability to walk."
[37:41] Right?
[37:42] And so everybody says, "Oh look, they
[37:44] had bad karma."
[37:46] Well, everybody only thinks losing your
[37:47] ability to walk is bad karma because
[37:49] everybody likes to walk.
[37:51] Right? Everybody has an attachment to
[37:52] walking. And so if you don't walk, well,
[37:54] that's bad karma.
[37:56] The Ramakrishna
[37:57] Prabhavananda said, "That has nothing to
[37:58] do with it." He says, "You see, these
[37:59] two men lost their ability to walk. One
[38:02] could never get over that. He just
[38:04] constantly replay that tape in his mind
[38:06] of all the things he used to be able to
[38:07] do. All the things he used to be known
[38:09] for. How great it was to be such a hiker
[38:12] and to do all of this."
[38:14] And he grows bitter and grows lonesome
[38:16] and kind of
[38:17] you know,
[38:18] becomes despondent.
[38:20] The other guy
[38:22] is like, "Wow, I've got an obstacle now
[38:24] in my life to express myself through.
[38:27] I've got to figure out how to be me
[38:29] with another obstacle in the way."
[38:31] So, he decides to join the Special
[38:33] Olympics
[38:35] and becomes a gold medalist, right? And
[38:37] then travels the world encouraging young
[38:39] people to overcome their limitations, to
[38:41] push against their obstacles.
[38:45] Did they both have bad karma?
[38:48] You know, cuz most people would say,
[38:49] "Oh, they lost their ability to walk."
[38:52] No, because karma is not about what
[38:54] happens to you.
[38:56] Karma is about what you can do with what
[38:57] happens to you.
[38:59] And one of these men
[39:01] took a difficult situation and turned it
[39:03] into gold.
[39:04] The other one was defeated by it.
[39:07] And so, for you in this moment, karma
[39:09] has delivered you this moment.
[39:12] Apply your Satchitananda to it. Apply
[39:14] your love, your wisdom, and your
[39:15] presence to whatever's in front of you
[39:18] in this moment. Embrace it.
[39:20] Right? I shared last time the Meister
[39:22] Eckhart, his definition of of wisdom.
[39:26] He said, "Wisdom is to ex- to to accept
[39:29] with your whole heart what the moment
[39:31] has delivered to you
[39:33] and then to delight in its doing."
[39:36] That's wisdom.
[39:38] Right?
[39:39] Accept what life has given to you at
[39:41] this moment. Look around. Don't give it
[39:44] a value judgment. Think about what
[39:46] beautiful thing can I make out of this
[39:48] old cord and that broken table.
[39:50] Right?
[39:51] What beautiful thing can I make
[39:54] out of this despondent broken marriage?
[39:58] What beautiful thing can I make out of
[40:00] my, you know, horribly
[40:02] uh
[40:03] rebellious teenagers?
[40:05] Right? It's always looking and seeing
[40:07] the potential, seeing the infinite
[40:09] divinity in everything, in every moment,
[40:12] and never for a moment
[40:14] to stop believing,
[40:16] to stop trusting, to stop hoping.
[40:19] Right? In that.
[40:21] So, this infinite is the source of your
[40:23] joy. It's within you. Now, when you
[40:26] first go within you, like you close your
[40:28] eyes and you sit down to meditate and
[40:29] you're like, "Come on.
[40:31] Not much infinity in here.
[40:33] It looks like red and mushy.
[40:35] Really, there's nothing going on."
[40:37] It takes you quite some time chanting
[40:40] that mantra in the shrine of your heart
[40:42] before you feel that expansion.
[40:45] Right? Before you feel a love coming
[40:47] from somewhere that doesn't seem like
[40:49] it's just you.
[40:51] That there's a presence within you. That
[40:53] image of the divine beloved that's
[40:55] within you. And when you find it, it's
[40:58] right here, right smack in the center of
[41:00] the heart.
[41:01] But, this has to be absolutely quiet for
[41:03] you to be able to stay here.
[41:05] For you to be able to find peace here.
[41:08] Right? And so, you start doing the
[41:09] practices. Just watching the mind,
[41:12] understanding the mind has nothing to do
[41:13] with you.
[41:15] And backing up every thought, "Not me.
[41:17] No, that's not me. That's changing.
[41:18] That's not real. That's not real." And
[41:20] you back into this shrine of the heart.
[41:23] Right? And you come to know this divine
[41:26] infinite love which is there and always
[41:28] available to you. And look what Look
[41:30] what it does. This is what your
[41:32] meditation turns into if you stick with
[41:34] it. You know, he says, "One who realizes
[41:37] the truth of the self, this infinite
[41:39] being, such a one delights in the self."
[41:44] Right? For you to sit in your meditation
[41:47] will be to delight in that self, in that
[41:50] pure love.
[41:52] To go in and not have to beg from
[41:54] everybody around you to love you.
[41:56] Not to beg from everybody around you to
[41:58] think that you're a good person.
[42:00] But, for you to go to your own well of
[42:02] love and pull out a drink of love and
[42:05] fill yourself up with love.
[42:08] Never having had to beg for it.
[42:12] That's spiritual life.
[42:14] And then to build this atmosphere of
[42:16] love within yourself, because it's what
[42:19] you are.
[42:21] It's your light.
[42:23] So that you can walk through this world
[42:25] in all of the different atmospheres you
[42:27] encounter in a day, living in a single
[42:29] atmosphere of gentleness, of compassion,
[42:33] of kindness. An atmosphere within
[42:35] yourself that that's the way you treat
[42:37] your own self. That's the way you talk
[42:39] to your own self. You sit nurtured in
[42:42] this love that is
[42:45] natural and native to you.
[42:48] And you walk around spilling it on
[42:49] everyone. Oh, I'm so sorry.
[42:52] Oh god, I I loved you, too. Sorry.
[42:55] Right?
[42:56] To walk around just spilling out. That's
[42:59] You know, you don't have a purpose for
[43:01] loving somebody.
[43:02] It's love with no cause.
[43:04] You don't have a reason. You're not
[43:06] expecting anything from them in response
[43:08] to it. You're just sitting here Your
[43:11] bathtub's full to the brim, and you bump
[43:12] into things, and it's splashing all over
[43:14] everything everywhere.
[43:16] That's how a Jesus lives. That's how a
[43:18] Buddha lives. That's how a Ramakrishna
[43:20] or Holy Mother lives.
[43:22] Walking around, bouncing, bumping into
[43:25] everyone, and spilling divine love.
[43:28] Overflowing constantly.
[43:30] At peace.
[43:32] Because they have nothing to accomplish.
[43:34] At peace because they know this moment
[43:36] is everything.
[43:37] All of the past is indicated in this
[43:39] moment, and all of the future will grow
[43:41] out of this moment.
[43:43] So if I sit here and nurture this moment
[43:45] with pure love, beautiful things will
[43:47] grow out of it.
[43:49] Life will be contented. Life will become
[43:51] beautiful.
[43:53] Brother Lawrence, he says here, he says
[43:56] He says, "You know these useful these
[43:57] useless thoughts spoil everything.
[44:02] That mischief began there. We ought to
[44:05] reject these thoughts as soon as we
[44:07] perceive them to be impertinent and
[44:10] return to our communion with the
[44:12] beloved. Right? So, you get this this
[44:15] place in the shrine where you're saying
[44:17] your mantra, singing the name of God,
[44:18] and each time that name of God passes
[44:20] through you, a pulse of love increases
[44:23] within you. The sense of love increases.
[44:25] It expands within you. And you sit in
[44:27] that space and you enjoy that love.
[44:29] Ramakrishna says that in all of your
[44:31] practice, there is only one striving.
[44:33] There's only one striving, and that
[44:35] striving is to enjoy God.
[44:38] That's all.
[44:39] Right? This moment is your test of how
[44:41] close to God you are.
[44:44] Can you sit alone in a room at this
[44:46] moment and be content without anything
[44:47] to entertain you, without anything to
[44:50] distract you?
[44:52] Will you be okay with yourself? Are you
[44:54] Are you proud with the way you're living
[44:55] your life? Are you content
[44:58] with the people and the relationships in
[45:00] your life?
[45:02] Right? Because if your relationship with
[45:04] the beloved is healthy,
[45:06] then you would delight in this moment.
[45:08] You would revel in this moment. This
[45:11] moment would be You know, I always think
[45:13] of a dog when it runs out on a freshly
[45:15] mowed lawn in the summer and they just
[45:16] throw themselves on their back and
[45:18] they're just like
[45:19] you know.
[45:20] I don't know what they're doing when
[45:21] they do that. It's probably something
[45:22] awful, but
[45:24] >> [laughter]
[45:24] >> but nonetheless, they run out there and
[45:26] just indulge, you know, in that. If your
[45:29] spiritual life is going according to
[45:31] plan, according to Mother's plan for
[45:33] you,
[45:34] that's your experience of spiritual
[45:36] life.
[45:37] That you go and you just
[45:40] you're you're reveling in it. You're
[45:41] delighting in it. Right? Those three
[45:43] things that he says here. It delights in
[45:45] the self. To me, delighting is when I
[45:47] came down as
[45:48] on Christmas morning as a child and saw
[45:51] a room full of Santa Claus's gifts to
[45:52] me.
[45:54] >> [laughter]
[45:55] >> Right? I get to open all these things.
[45:57] How cool. Delighting.
[45:59] That's That is the way to enter into
[46:02] your heart when you sit to do your
[46:03] practice.
[46:04] Delighting at the treasure that's
[46:06] available to you there, the forgiveness,
[46:09] the sweetness, the confidence,
[46:12] the absolute okayness
[46:14] of everything.
[46:16] Right?
[46:17] To delight in that. The second one he
[46:19] says to revel in the self. Just
[46:23] get covered in it.
[46:24] Just sit there, take that name of God,
[46:26] right? Now, this is a tall order at the
[46:28] beginning cuz it's a tall order I know.
[46:30] It doesn't seem like there's anything in
[46:31] there.
[46:32] I get it.
[46:33] You know, sometimes it can take go years
[46:35] at a time where it doesn't seem like
[46:36] there's anything in there.
[46:38] But that's all a play. It's all a game.
[46:41] Because mother doesn't want to be your
[46:43] good time. She doesn't want you just to
[46:45] come to her because you're going to get
[46:47] something.
[46:48] She wants you to come to her in all
[46:50] sincerity and earnestness, not for
[46:52] anything.
[46:53] Because if you live a life of
[46:54] expectation, you're going to be hungry
[46:56] all the time.
[46:58] She wants you to learn to come and be
[46:59] filled up without expecting anything.
[47:02] So that you don't get trapped into
[47:04] thinking that you can't get away or that
[47:06] you that you are beholden to something
[47:08] outside of yourself, right?
[47:11] We rejoice in the self. You know,
[47:14] rejoicing that's that's when you
[47:16] when you get good news from the doctor
[47:18] if you're old.
[47:19] >> [laughter]
[47:20] >> Or you pass the exam if you're young,
[47:22] right? And you're just walking along
[47:24] singing your song like
[47:26] yeah, life is good. I graduated.
[47:29] I got it done.
[47:31] Right? And so Brother Lawrence is saying
[47:33] so these thoughts, the bad thoughts,
[47:35] these thoughts that that I'm not okay,
[47:36] these thoughts of expectation, these
[47:38] thoughts of there's nothing in here,
[47:40] these thoughts of
[47:42] what's what's going on with life? He
[47:45] said all these things they don't have
[47:47] anything to do with you.
[47:49] Actually, none of your thoughts have
[47:51] anything to do with you.
[47:53] They're just an organ of thought
[47:54] creating thought. One thought after
[47:57] another spat out, and every thought
[47:59] related to the previous thought.
[48:01] It's because of your attachment to them,
[48:03] because you're the one that gets to have
[48:05] a seemingly private viewing of them,
[48:08] that you think they're about you.
[48:10] They're not about you.
[48:12] You can't even be thought about. You are
[48:14] infinite in your nature.
[48:16] You can't even be there, right? You
[48:18] can't be in this room,
[48:19] because you are that. You're everything
[48:22] everywhere at this moment.
[48:25] You're the dreamer, and this is the
[48:27] dream.
[48:28] Right? You have created every single
[48:31] person in this room.
[48:33] You are the universal. You are not the
[48:35] particular.
[48:36] And you can walk around to knowing that
[48:38] this is a dream,
[48:40] and be utterly free, because everyone is
[48:43] of you.
[48:44] And you know that everyone's nature is
[48:46] the same as you. They all want you to be
[48:48] kind, just like you want them to be
[48:49] kind. Why? Because we know that we're
[48:52] kind in our nature.
[48:55] We walk around here being able to
[48:57] nurture each other and to understand
[48:58] each other, because we see
[49:01] the process of what everybody's going
[49:03] through.
[49:04] Right? What's going in the back of all
[49:06] of us is pure love, pure wisdom, and
[49:08] presence. And what's coming out here is
[49:11] a personality.
[49:13] And so if you know that pure love is
[49:15] going in the back, you can understand
[49:17] what's coming out the front.
[49:19] And our jobs as brothers and sisters of
[49:21] a sangha is to get to know each other
[49:24] well enough so that when we see each
[49:25] other, we see the love first.
[49:28] We see the presence of God first.
[49:31] Right? Somebody's in a bad mood and
[49:33] they're like, "Ah."
[49:34] But I see the presence of God before it
[49:36] went through that mood cycle.
[49:38] I see it in you.
[49:40] Right? And when you go hug them, that's
[49:41] who you hug.
[49:43] Right? When you go talk to them, that's
[49:44] who you talk to.
[49:46] It's that practice. You see that in
[49:48] yourself. You wake up in the morning,
[49:49] there's lots of ways to wake up.
[49:52] Wake up with the real understanding
[49:54] Don't comment another new day.
[49:57] Another one where all my things that
[49:58] happened yesterday are gone and done.
[50:01] Don't exist. They're conceptual.
[50:03] Now I'm free. I get to start another
[50:05] day. I'll do it right. I'll do it
[50:06] differently today.
[50:08] We're going to do this, that, and the
[50:09] other. And oh, wait. Let's not plan.
[50:12] Let's just do the right thing right now.
[50:15] Let me get out of bed.
[50:16] >> [laughter]
[50:17] >> Let me go take a shower.
[50:19] Get this thing cleaned up.
[50:22] And you just keep doing what the moment
[50:24] presents to you.
[50:26] Gladly accepting with your whole heart,
[50:28] delighting in its doing, and throwing
[50:30] your effort into it.
[50:32] And being free because nothing is
[50:34] required.
[50:35] The grace of God has already told you
[50:37] you will realize.
[50:39] You know, that's one of the differences
[50:40] between the religion I grew up in. I
[50:42] don't know if it was just my particular
[50:43] brand of that religion,
[50:45] but not even all the people in the front
[50:47] row were going to make it, you know.
[50:49] And the ones in the back, forget it,
[50:52] right?
[50:54] But in the Vedanta, everybody's going
[50:56] home. Right? Everybody's going home.
[51:00] Some of us are going to get there. Well,
[51:01] I think all the ones that were going to
[51:02] get there soon have already gone. Yeah.
[51:04] I think we're probably at the lunch
[51:05] crowd at this point.
[51:07] And then there's going to be a few of
[51:08] us, you know, and I'll be hanging with
[51:10] you.
[51:11] A few of us are coming probably after
[51:13] dinner, you know.
[51:14] The last bunch in.
[51:16] But all of us are going to get there.
[51:18] Ramakrishna makes that the first words
[51:21] of all of the avatars are, "I've got you
[51:23] covered."
[51:25] So that means stop worrying about that.
[51:28] Stop making that what you're doing and
[51:30] what you're thinking and what you're
[51:31] being. Stop making that your concern.
[51:34] Now be as pure as possible. What does
[51:36] pure mean? It means have no thought of
[51:38] me or mine.
[51:39] Just be.
[51:41] Don't be something.
[51:43] Just be.
[51:45] Right? In our life right now, all of our
[51:47] attachments, the things that we've
[51:49] chosen to remember and to place into our
[51:51] minds, colors our moments so that it
[51:53] always looks like we need something.
[51:55] Right? You know, it'd be really nice
[51:56] right now, a big tall lemonade, right?
[51:59] On a beach.
[52:00] Somewhere else.
[52:02] Right? We always come up with all of
[52:04] these ideas of other things.
[52:07] But in this moment, just take what is.
[52:10] Just take what's given to you. Silence
[52:12] the mind completely. There's no thought
[52:14] there of any value.
[52:16] So that you no longer live in service of
[52:18] your desires. You're no longer having to
[52:20] go and give the mind what it wants and
[52:22] go and give the body what it wants.
[52:25] You know, which is a constant
[52:26] enslavement. As long as you think you're
[52:27] the body and you think you're the mind,
[52:29] you think you're having the time of your
[52:30] life, but you're always
[52:33] alone and depressed at the end of the
[52:34] day and you can't figure out why. I
[52:36] bought a new dress and I did my hair and
[52:38] I did my nails and
[52:40] you know, normally for me that would be
[52:41] a great day.
[52:42] >> [laughter]
[52:44] >> But
[52:45] it leaves us empty, right? Leaves us
[52:47] empty.
[52:49] The thing that will not leave you empty
[52:50] is to be in constant relationship with
[52:52] the story of love that is your life.
[52:55] Right?
[52:56] To put it back into its proper
[52:58] perspective, your life is a story of
[53:01] love by definition because you are such
[53:04] at the Nanda. You are that love.
[53:07] And so when you go to your job and
[53:09] you're walking around that cubicle farm,
[53:11] you know, thinking, "Oh my god, is this
[53:13] really all life is about?"
[53:15] It's like, "Well, what are you doing?"
[53:17] If you're there thinking you're an
[53:19] accountant that has to do numbers stuff
[53:21] in this accounting
[53:24] uh
[53:25] farm.
[53:26] Yeah, that's depressing.
[53:28] That's depressing.
[53:29] Because that's not your nature.
[53:32] Your nature is to love.
[53:34] So you're here to love and incidentally
[53:36] you're an accountant.
[53:38] Right?
[53:40] And so you walk through that queue that
[53:41] that row of cubicles. you stop in, you
[53:43] talk to Jackie. Hey Jackie, how's
[53:45] Quentin doing? He was sick yesterday,
[53:46] wasn't he?
[53:47] Is he feeling better? Oh, he did? Well,
[53:49] here, I brought this card for him. We
[53:51] can give him a little card. Just Yeah,
[53:53] baseball. I drew a baseball in there for
[53:55] him.
[53:56] Right? Because I'm here to love, and now
[53:58] we'll look at your computer.
[54:00] All right?
[54:01] It's like and that's no matter what your
[54:03] job is, reframe it. If you want it to be
[54:05] fulfilling, then understand you're there
[54:07] for love.
[54:10] All right? And put your love into
[54:12] everything that you're doing, everyone
[54:13] that you're meeting.
[54:15] You're wondering what to How do I make
[54:17] the world a better place? Be where you
[54:19] are.
[54:20] Go around, be the one who's known for
[54:22] bringing cookies into the office, for
[54:24] bringing
[54:26] all those things
[54:27] all those little things into the office,
[54:29] right?
[54:31] Because you as a person who knows that
[54:33] you're there to love can change the
[54:34] world one cubicle at a time.
[54:38] You know, when people come to that
[54:39] office and they have they know they have
[54:41] someone there who's caring about them
[54:42] because they remember what they talk
[54:44] about.
[54:45] They gave them a card for Quentin, you
[54:47] know, they inquired about how they were
[54:49] doing.
[54:50] They came over and volunteered to clean
[54:52] my yard, you know, while I had to go
[54:54] away. Whatever it is, do you see what
[54:56] I'm saying?
[54:58] Know who you are and then live.
[55:01] Don't live and try and figure out who
[55:03] you are.
[55:04] Know who you are.
[55:06] I am an ocean of infinite love
[55:09] ready to express in all directions with
[55:12] no cause.
[55:13] I'm wisdom itself
[55:15] because I'm I'm motivated only by love.
[55:18] I'm not motivated by what my body wants
[55:20] or what my mind wants.
[55:22] I'm inspired to life by the love that I
[55:25] sit in in my meditation, in my practice.
[55:28] I'm inspired to my movement as an
[55:31] expression of my divinity,
[55:33] of my my peace, my calmness inside
[55:37] because I do have enough for everybody.
[55:40] I can take care of the whole room.
[55:42] You know, and I will live for that.
[55:45] Reframe your life on who you are, and
[55:47] you will suddenly find it being
[55:49] fulfilling.
[55:51] If you try and live a fulfilling life,
[55:53] you'll never do it.
[55:55] If you live life knowing who you are,
[55:58] fulfillment happens.
[56:00] Contentment happens.
[56:02] And it doesn't have to be maintained.
[56:05] Because those also are inherent to your
[56:08] divine nature.
[56:09] As soon as you can get this mind
[56:13] and it's it's creation, it's scab, the
[56:17] the the ego,
[56:19] as soon as you can get that thing
[56:20] thinned down enough at least,
[56:23] Ramakrishna says it's very rare that a
[56:25] normal person can completely efface the
[56:27] ego like a Jesus or a Buddha or a Rama.
[56:30] He says, "So, what you do is you you get
[56:32] it as thin as you can.
[56:34] Just keep acknowledging it. Yes, I see
[56:37] it. Yes, I see it. Yes, I see it. Get it
[56:39] as thin as you can. And when you get it
[56:41] down to pretty thin, then just
[56:42] whatever's left, put it in relationship
[56:45] to to the beloved. Make it the child of
[56:47] God. Make it the wife of God. Make it
[56:49] God's dog. Whatever it is, put it in
[56:52] relationship to the beloved, and it'll
[56:54] behave itself just fine enough to not
[56:56] get in your way, and then you can get on
[56:58] with being doing what's the one most
[57:00] important thing,
[57:02] loving,
[57:03] nurturing,
[57:05] uplifting, hoping and dreaming for those
[57:07] around you,
[57:09] and being genuinely happy when success
[57:11] happens to them.
[57:12] Right?
[57:14] All right.
[57:16] From Brahman comes all of this, this
[57:19] appearance, right?
[57:22] Brahman comes appearances, sensations,
[57:24] desires, deeds. But all these are merely
[57:27] name and form. To know Brahman, one must
[57:30] experience the identity between him and
[57:33] the self, right? This is an important
[57:35] thing. It's like it
[57:37] generally in the beginning in spiritual
[57:39] life for some reason we place God out
[57:41] there,
[57:42] right? Because we can't imagine that he
[57:44] would would live in here,
[57:46] right? We're we're so there's so much
[57:49] stress going on in here. There's so much
[57:51] discontent going on in here. There's so
[57:53] much shame, so much hatred, so much
[57:56] whatever carrying on in there.
[57:59] Doesn't have to be.
[58:02] It doesn't have to be.
[58:03] You can let that go.
[58:05] You can let that just be what it is.
[58:08] I remember this young man who joined the
[58:10] monastery in San Francisco had real
[58:11] anger issues. I mean two or three times
[58:13] a day he was just blowing up in my face
[58:16] and I was getting so stressed out by it.
[58:18] I was like, "This guy's got to go."
[58:21] All right?
[58:22] So I So I went to Swami Prabhuddhananda
[58:24] not telling him he had to go, but
[58:25] telling him, "I've got to go. I'm going
[58:27] to go to the retreat center. I'm going
[58:28] to go move up there. I can't live with
[58:30] this guy. This guy's stressing me out."
[58:33] And Swami Prabhuddhananda looked at me
[58:34] and he said,
[58:36] "Oh okay, but why?"
[58:38] He says, "Can you Can you not see that
[58:40] that's just the way he is?
[58:43] And can you not just let him be the way
[58:44] he is?
[58:46] Just because he feels the need to get
[58:48] angry three or four times a day does not
[58:49] mean that you need to respond.
[58:52] Doesn't mean that you need to assume
[58:53] responsibility. Doesn't mean that you
[58:55] should fix it or you should take care of
[58:57] it.
[58:58] Give him the space to be an angry guy
[59:00] and go on with your life."
[59:04] I was I I found that incredible.
[59:07] Mostly because I had never thought of
[59:09] it.
[59:10] I was like, "That's so obvious."
[59:12] The most mature and best answer I've
[59:14] ever heard and it never occurred to me.
[59:17] I was going to have to pick up and move
[59:19] to the retreat center to find my peace.
[59:22] But see, this is what it is when you get
[59:23] your practice going and you create that
[59:26] space within your own self where you
[59:28] live in the atmosphere of your temple
[59:31] with your beloved. This life of love
[59:34] that you're trying to express, right?
[59:36] Trying to make room for.
[59:41] That's what happens.
[59:43] Right?
[59:44] That's who you are.
[59:46] And it's all divine, so take the divine
[59:48] help from all of it. Don't look and just
[59:50] say, "Oh, what a beautiful tree."
[59:53] Have a conversation with the one who
[59:54] made the tree.
[59:56] Oh, beloved that you've manifested as a
[59:58] tree.
[1:00:00] You've been standing I went to the
[1:00:01] redwood forest and I sat there and
[1:00:03] contemplated a tree. Wow, that'll change
[1:00:05] your life.
[1:00:06] That tree has been standing there for
[1:00:08] 2,000 years.
[1:00:10] It's It hasn't mentioned being bored a
[1:00:12] single time.
[1:00:14] Right?
[1:00:15] And you sit there and you imagine,
[1:00:16] "Well, what would I be if I stood there
[1:00:18] in one place for 2,000 years?
[1:00:23] What kind of being would I be?
[1:00:26] What kind of wisdom would accumulate in
[1:00:28] that? What kind of knowledge?
[1:00:30] What kind of patience?
[1:00:33] What kind of contentment would be
[1:00:34] discovered in that?
[1:00:36] Right? And so you live in a world that
[1:00:38] is your divine beloved.
[1:00:40] He can teach you through everything. A
[1:00:42] brick in the wall, sit there and ask him
[1:00:44] for a lesson. Say, "Hey, Ma,
[1:00:47] teach me about being a brick in the
[1:00:48] wall."
[1:00:50] And then don't think anything. Just sit
[1:00:51] there in silence listening.
[1:00:54] You'll get a teaching. You'll get a
[1:00:56] knowing.
[1:00:57] Because that's the way this universe is.
[1:00:59] Everything is a teacher.
[1:01:02] Everything will point the way.
[1:01:04] If you know it inside, if you understand
[1:01:07] who you are, then you know how to live
[1:01:09] in this world and you understand that
[1:01:11] everything here is your body as well.
[1:01:15] That the skin is arbitrary.
[1:01:18] Right? The way that your body
[1:01:19] communicates with you right now, the way
[1:01:21] that your mind tells you it's needs to
[1:01:23] move, the body says I want to get out of
[1:01:25] here.
[1:01:26] Right? All that interface is the same
[1:01:28] way that the whole world is interfacing
[1:01:30] with you right now using the same
[1:01:31] apparatus.
[1:01:33] So, it's arbitrary to say this is me and
[1:01:35] that's not.
[1:01:37] Right? Because when one of my other
[1:01:39] parts of my body comes to me afterwards
[1:01:41] and says, "Hey, well, I had a really
[1:01:42] tough week."
[1:01:44] Then this part of my body knows how to
[1:01:45] give them a hug and say, "Hey, well,
[1:01:47] let's
[1:01:48] let's get together next week so we don't
[1:01:49] have to do that alone again."
[1:01:51] Right?
[1:01:53] The world is your body. This sangha is
[1:01:56] your body.
[1:01:58] And so, take care of each other because
[1:01:59] you're taking care of yourself.
[1:02:01] And trust each other because you're
[1:02:03] trusting yourself.
[1:02:05] And be free to be who you are. You don't
[1:02:07] have to be a superhero to be here.
[1:02:10] Be a person.
[1:02:12] For the time being.
[1:02:14] But become a god.
[1:02:16] Right?
[1:02:18] So, go forward.
[1:02:20] Don't forget. This moment is always
[1:02:22] yours. It's always pure. It's always
[1:02:24] blessed. And it's always your
[1:02:26] opportunity to start again.
[1:02:29] Un- un- unburdened
[1:02:32] by what you did yesterday.
[1:02:35] Try mom.
[1:02:36] Try top mom.
[1:02:37] Try Swami G.
