Novice Ordination Ceremony: Hair, Vows and Dharma Names

DP
Deer Park Monastery
Oct 18, 2026
8 min read

From Deer Park Monastery

Watch · 7

A novice ordination is not a performance, though it is staged with the precision of one. Across roughly ninety-five minutes, a Deer Park Monastery ceremony moves through chanting, bell, a formal request to the assembled community, three rounds of silent consent, a sequence of gratitude bows, a water blessing, the cutting of hair, and the recitation of vows in which each ordinand, one line at a time, commits to a new way of living. The video, titled for the Engelmann Oak family of ordinands, records every step without commentary, which makes it a rare chance to watch how a monastic transition is built, one deliberate action after another.

What happens when the community is asked to agree?

The ceremony opens with a question-and-answer procedure that sounds almost legal, and in a sense it is. A senior member asks whether the whole community has assembled, whether there is harmony within it, and why the group has gathered. The answer is that the community has come to give spiritual support to the ordination and to witness the transmission of the novice precepts. Only after this exchange is the request read aloud: the names of the ordinands are announced, with their dharma names, and the community is asked whether the timing is right and whether anything stands in the way.

The mechanics matter here. Each ordinand must be shown to be practicing the way of the precepts, and the proposal is put to the community three times. The consent rule is simple and it is strict. Those who agree remain silent; anyone who objects must speak. At the request's third asking (around 27:28 in the recording), the assembled monastics and nuns have stayed quiet through all three rounds, and the ceremony formally records that the ordination has been agreed to. Silence is not passivity in this structure. It is a collective act of responsibility, the community saying with its whole body that it has looked at these people and found them ready.

Why do the ordinands take on new dharma names?

When the names are read at the start (the request is made at about 23:04), each one arrives as a pair of images. The video gives them in full: one ordinand is called "wonderful cloud of the heart," another "steady ground of the source," another "steady source of freedom," another "calm lake of the source," another "compassionate freedom of the source," and another "faithful calling of the source." The shared phrase "of the source" runs through the list like a refrain, pointing each new name back to a common origin while giving each person a distinct quality to grow into.

That structure is worth dwelling on. A dharma name in this tradition is not a costume. It is a reminder, a vow in miniature, given at the moment a person's old identity is being set down. The ordinand becomes someone who is named for what they are aspiring to embody, and the community will call them by that name from now on. The video makes clear that the name is received in the middle of the ceremony rather than at its end, so that the rest of the rite, including the hair and the vows, happens under it.

What does the gratitude bowing teach?

Before the hair is cut, the ordinands rise, come forward with palms joined before the three jewels, and touch the earth once after each line of recitation. The lines are a catalog of gratitude that widens in circles. First: "In gratitude to our mother and father who have given us life." Then: "In gratitude to our teachers who have shown us how to love, understand and live deeply the present moment." Then friends: "who guide us and support us, especially in difficult moments." Finally, at the widest circle, the recitation names gratitude to "the animal, plant and mineral worlds." Each line closes with the same bow to the three jewels in the ten directions.

The sequence is an education in interdependence. The ordinand is taught to see that their life was given by parents, shaped by teachers, held up by friends, and sustained by a natural world that asks nothing of them in return. The bell and the floor-touching slow the body down enough that the words can register. For a viewer who has never seen this ritual, the structure alone is instructive: a path is entered not by erasing the past but by naming everything that carried you to this point.

Why is water poured before the hair is cut?

The most striking passage in the ceremony comes at about 32:57, when the community is asked to join palms and offer spiritual support as the hair is cut. Before that, a recitation describes the water being used: "This water has eight special qualities. It washes away the dust and impurities of all living beings, leading them all into the wonderful avatam world. May all beings without exception overcome their suffering."

The chant then turns paradoxical in a way that will feel familiar to anyone who has studied the Heart Sutra tradition. "Water does not need to be washed away by water. That is the wonderful dharmakaya. Dust does not need to cling to dust. That is how our mind opens naturally." The sprinkled water is called "the nectar of compassion," and the recitation says that when it is poured, the place of awakening is purified, the wilting plant grows green again, and "the world of defilement changes into the world of purity." The hair falls as part of this same logic: letting go of what clung, so that the mind can open on its own. The cutting is therefore not a sacrifice of appearance so much as a demonstration that attachment to form is what keeps the mind closed.

"And all beings are refreshed and can live in peace and joy."

— recitation during the water blessing, Deer Park Monastery novice ordination video (about 32:57)

What do the novice vows actually ask?

The climax of the ceremony is the recitation of vows. The community repeats after the ordinands, and the video captures the rhythm of the call and response: "Shedding my hair completely, I make the vow." Several of the vows are spoken in the first person, with the ordinand declaring what they will and will not do. At about 65:38, one ordinand states resolve "not to use perfume," and another (around 66:52) commits to not allowing themselves to be carried away by the desires that the precepts address. The recitation is numbered, moving through "the first of the 10 novice" precepts to "the 10th of the 10" near the end of the sequence (about 57:58).

These vows are personal in tone but communal in function. Each line is spoken aloud in front of the whole assembly, so the ordinand's promise is witnessed rather than privately held. The novice is not asked to be perfect. Instead the vows describe a direction: a set of practices for speech, for the body, for relationships, and for the way one consumes and presents oneself. In the moment, the effect is less a list of rules than a rehearsal of attention.

What is the lasting meaning of the ceremony?

Near the end, the ceremony moves to the family and community that stand behind the new novices. At about 88:21, the recitation turns to the sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles of the ordinands, the people who will now see them in a different light. This is the quiet final lesson of the rite: a monastic path changes the people around it as much as the person entering it. The ceremony closes with chanting and a long sung refrain, and the viewer is left with the sense of a threshold crossed slowly and on purpose.

The transcript is partly fragmented, and the video's audio is at times hard to follow. But the structure is clear enough to be useful. If you are preparing to attend a novice ordination, watching this ceremony will show you what to expect: silent consent, named aspirations, gratitude as a practice, water and hair as symbols of letting go, and vows spoken aloud. If you are simply curious about how a living tradition marks a beginning, the video offers an unusually complete record.

Where to go from here

Watch the full ceremony with attention to the three rounds of asking and the gratitude sequence, since these show the logic of community consent and interdependence most clearly. Then return to the water blessing and read its lines slowly, asking what "dust does not need to cling to dust" might mean in your own practice. The ordination is a complete lesson in how a path is entered: by being named, witnessed, thanked, and bound by vows that are spoken out loud, one at a time.

[1:13:52] dharma name is

[1:13:57] one presence.

[1:14:01] Yeah, that will help you stay grounded

[1:14:04] in the thigh.

[1:14:06] >> [laughter]

[1:14:07] >> One present.

[1:14:11] >> There's only one moment,

[1:14:16] >> brother. One moment,

[1:14:21] brother. Now

[1:14:26] this is to certify that Sumea

[1:14:29] Bujma Nadah has been ordained as a

[1:14:33] shamanica.

[1:14:35] Lineage name faithful calling of the

[1:14:38] source.

[1:14:40] Dharma name

[1:14:44] action of true practice.

[1:15:01] Yeah.

[1:15:24] Lamp of the mind or lamp of the heart.

[1:16:05] The sanka um our new ordin they um in

[1:16:10] our tradition each time we have a the

[1:16:12] nation they become a cluster of family

[1:16:15] and they become like uh spiritual

[1:16:17] brothers and sister in the family from

[1:16:19] the eldest to the youngest. is and this

[1:16:23] year's uh this uh bunch here is will be

[1:16:26] uh the family of the angelman oak and

[1:16:30] very very native and so if you ever uh

[1:16:34] need to take refuge go find a oak up

[1:16:37] there and take a hug. Okay. They are

[1:16:40] very resilient and they have been here

[1:16:42] for thousands of years in this valley.

[1:16:46] So please take refuge in that and grow

[1:16:49] beautifully together as a forest of

[1:16:52] anglemen. The stronger you are the more

[1:16:55] closely you are. Okay. Thank you. We

[1:16:59] like to take a moment to ask to share

[1:17:02] with you a few uh words of

[1:17:05] encouragement.

[1:17:17] Ah maybe

[1:17:18] >> you can sit put your sort of certificate

[1:17:20] down and sit

[1:17:21] >> put your certificate on your uh yeah

[1:17:25] >> sort of sit down so uh you don't have to

[1:17:27] be kneeling the whole time

[1:17:33] encouraging words.

[1:17:50] Fore! Foreign! Foreign!

[1:18:12] Dear community,

[1:18:15] dear SA, I would like to share a little

[1:18:18] bit of an encouraging words to the newly

[1:18:21] ordained noviceses.

[1:18:34] There are things that seem very normal

[1:18:36] but it is a very long process of uh

[1:18:41] progression

[1:18:42] and development.

[1:19:10] For example, all of us here are taking

[1:19:13] part in the ceremony

[1:19:16] uh novice ordination ceremony. We hear

[1:19:19] the chant of the sutras and we see a

[1:19:22] very beautiful and serene ceremony.

[1:19:25] But that is not just the fruit of today,

[1:19:28] but the fruit of more than 300 years ago

[1:19:31] from the tradition that has been passed

[1:19:33] down to us.

[1:19:45] Foreign

[1:19:51] speech. Foreign speech. Foreign speech.

[1:20:20] Buddhism have been present in China

[1:20:24] since the first century AD.

[1:20:27] But it was after many years of practice

[1:20:31] and observation

[1:20:32] that we started to formulate the

[1:20:35] monastic community, the robes, the way

[1:20:39] of living, the way of eating, the way of

[1:20:42] uh ceremonies. And it took about 300

[1:20:45] years to formulate um from the first

[1:20:48] presence of Buddhism in China to

[1:20:50] formulate what we see, what we have now.

[1:21:18] and after formulating certain ceremonies

[1:21:21] and structure in the Buddhist community.

[1:21:26] um only then did the Zen masters and the

[1:21:29] teachers and practitioners start to

[1:21:31] formulate the concrete teachings and

[1:21:34] practices in the different schools. So

[1:21:37] it took about a total of another 300

[1:21:39] years to start proper teachings and

[1:21:42] courses. So in total about 600 years

[1:21:46] since the presence of Buddhism in China

[1:21:48] for it to be perfected.

[1:22:29] and bringing us to today

[1:22:32] uh in in this ceremony you have been

[1:22:35] able to receive so much love and so much

[1:22:38] perfection and Buddhism's presence in

[1:22:41] the United States and western lands is

[1:22:43] very new, fairly new. But what one of

[1:22:46] the gifts that you have received today

[1:22:48] is not only a ceremony full of beauty,

[1:22:51] serenity and peace, but also you re you

[1:22:55] are welcome into a community that is

[1:22:58] already have that already has the

[1:23:00] practice and teaching for you to receive

[1:23:04] to cultivate that peace, joy and love.

[1:23:07] And this is the greatest gift that you

[1:23:10] have been able to receive after many

[1:23:12] years of incubating

[1:23:16] and perfection. And you are able to join

[1:23:19] in the community today.

[1:23:43] Foreign

[1:23:56] speech. Foreign speech. Foreign speech.

[1:24:12] And even the heart sutra that we have

[1:24:14] chanted with so much heroic energy, the

[1:24:17] strength and the energy behind the heart

[1:24:19] sutra has taken many forms and

[1:24:21] transformation and even translation

[1:24:25] and the ceremonies and the text and the

[1:24:27] practice that we have today has become

[1:24:29] very beautiful and perfected and the

[1:24:31] teachings that you have or received

[1:24:34] received and the community has developed

[1:24:38] greatly. And other than that, we have

[1:24:41] also um

[1:24:44] uh

[1:24:46] become very engaged in re leading

[1:24:49] retreats and events outside of our

[1:24:52] everyday practice. And this is a gift

[1:24:54] that Thai has offered us in the past 50

[1:24:57] years um in the west

[1:25:01] and most precious gift that we can

[1:25:03] receive today.

[1:26:02] I'll try to remember everything.

[1:26:06] So on behalf of the monks and nuns and

[1:26:10] the entire community here, I would like

[1:26:13] to wish the newly ordained noviceses

[1:26:16] uh a steady path, a steady steps on the

[1:26:20] path of practice. And I encourage you to

[1:26:24] take hold of the treasures that you have

[1:26:26] received and put them dearly into

[1:26:29] practice of all the things and the

[1:26:31] wonderful things that you have inherited

[1:26:34] today as members of the community. the

[1:26:38] teachings that have been on this planet

[1:26:42] Earth for more than 2,600 years, but

[1:26:45] also the teachings that you have

[1:26:48] received directly from your teacher Thai

[1:26:51] and to really take hold of the practice

[1:26:54] and not to waver.

[1:26:56] I [clears throat] think that's it. Yeah,

[1:26:59] >> it's Yeah,

[1:27:04] >> I she's going to speak a little bit

[1:27:06] more.

[1:27:16] forchech.

[1:28:11] I would like to take a moment to express

[1:28:15] uh gratitude to the loved ones, the

[1:28:18] families, mothers and fathers, brothers

[1:28:21] and sisters of all of the ordin

[1:28:25] you have raised. raised such beautiful

[1:28:27] children and beautiful siblings and you

[1:28:31] have offered them to the world. This is

[1:28:34] the gift that you have offered and you

[1:28:36] have allowed them to continue to share

[1:28:38] the beauty and the love that you have

[1:28:41] given them to share with so many other

[1:28:43] people. So, not only do you offer your

[1:28:47] gift of life to your loved ones, but you

[1:28:50] also share that with the rest of the

[1:28:52] world and you continue to offer the gift

[1:28:56] and they will continue to be able to

[1:28:58] bring that love that they have received

[1:29:00] through you to many people on this

[1:29:03] planet. that this is a gift that not

[1:29:06] only we received from you, the family,

[1:29:09] the loved ones, brothers, sisters,

[1:29:11] cousin, aunts and uncles who are all

[1:29:13] here um but uh this is a gift that you

[1:29:17] have offered not just to our community

[1:29:19] but to the world and we are very

[1:29:21] grateful for all that you have done for

[1:29:25] us to be able to continue this path.

[1:29:29] Thank you so much.

[1:29:34] forever.

[1:29:42] I'm more

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

The ceremony includes a formal request to the community, three rounds of asking where silence signals consent, a gratitude bowing sequence, a water blessing, the cutting of hair, and the recitation of novice vows. Each step is witnessed by the assembled community. The Deer Park Monastery recording shows this full sequence in about an hour and a half.
The dharma name is given at the moment a person's former identity is set down, and it names a quality the novice is aspiring to embody. In the recorded ceremony, names like 'steady ground of the source' and 'calm lake of the source' are read aloud before the hair is cut and vows are taken.
The assembled community is asked whether the timing is right and whether anything obstructs the ordination. Those who agree remain silent, and anyone who objects must speak. The request is asked three times, and the silence through all three rounds is taken as agreement.
The recitation describes the water as having eight special qualities that wash away dust and impurities. It also teaches that water need not be washed by water and dust need not cling to dust, meaning the mind opens naturally when attachment is let go. The cutting of hair follows this same logic of release.
Novice precepts are a numbered set of vows that a novice speaks aloud during ordination, moving from the first to the tenth. In this ceremony they are recited line by line, with the ordinands declaring commitments such as not using perfume. They describe a direction of practice rather than a list of perfect behaviors.
The gratitude recitation widens in circles, from parents to teachers to friends and finally to the animal, plant and mineral worlds. Each circle is honored with a bow before the three jewels in the ten directions. The structure teaches that a monastic life is sustained by interdependence with the whole natural world.
