Network Chiropractic: How the Body Releases Its Own Tension

From Sacha Stewart

Watch · 6

On an April 2022 episode of The Inner Healer Podcast, host Sacha Stewart and spinal and energetic chiropractor Dr Sarah Jane spend close to an hour on a practice most people have never encountered: network spinal chiropractic, a technique that works with the nervous system through light touch and, at times, from just off the body, rather than by cracking joints or forcing vertebrae back into place. The conversation moves from the mechanics of that approach to the idea that the body stores what a person has lived through, to the spontaneous physical releases that sometimes surprise first-time clients, and finally to a question the episode's description frames as "a different view of success." What follows is a closer look at those ideas, drawn from the episode itself.

What does a "warm-up" look like in an episode that starts with a welcome?

The episode opens the way many good interviews do, with a host who has a personal connection to the guest. "Hello everyone, today on the podcast we have Dr Sarah Jane," Stewart begins, introducing her as the founder of Enlightened Healing, with clinics in Armadale and Calista. Stewart says she once worked at the Armadale clinic and has been a patient there, and she describes the energy in the room as something she has admired for a long time. That warmth matters for what follows. A technique built on subtle sensation and trust is hard to explain cold, and the two women spend the first stretch of the episode establishing a shared vocabulary before they get into the weeds.

What is network spinal chiropractic, and how is it different from a standard adjustment?

Stewart admits that for her, the practice was "very different" from a visit to a standard chiropractor, and asks Sarah Jane to explain it. Her answer begins by taking the old picture apart. "It's not the typical or standard approach to chiropractic, that's for sure," Sarah Jane says. The work is still chiropractic in that it engages the spine and the brain, but the method is not manipulative in the sense of forcing a bone back into a supposedly correct position.

The second difference is the target. Most people who book a chiropractor are looking for relief from back or neck pain. Sarah Jane says network practitioners do not treat pain as the whole story. They look at the person physically, emotionally, mentally, and also from what she calls a spiritual and soul aspect, and they try to connect those parts rather than address a single complaint. She says clients often arrive dealing with trauma, anxiety, or depression, and want to work at the root rather than suppress symptoms.

That distinction shapes everything else. If the aim is not to fix a joint but to change how a nervous system holds itself, then the practitioner's job becomes something closer to facilitation than correction.

Why does the body need to release on its own?

The core idea of the episode is that the body already knows how to heal and align, and the practitioner's role is to clear what gets in the way. Sarah Jane puts it plainly: "We work with the body and allow the body's innate wisdom to move itself, rather than the practitioner manipulating you, you know, the spine in a certain way to go back to a certain place that's more optimal."

Stewart picks up the thread immediately, reflecting back that the body seems to align itself spontaneously, and that the practitioner is really there to facilitate that change. Sarah Jane agrees, and the logic is important. Physical alignment is not treated as an end in itself. The argument is that when tension in the nervous system releases, a person's choices, relationships, and sense of direction can shift too.

Stewart sums this up in a line worth holding onto: "ultimately what we're changing is states of consciousness." Sarah Jane's own framing is that clients who are stuck in the past or anxious about the future are, in a sense, not present, and that bringing them back to the present moment requires a physical and energetic change, much as a meditation or yoga practice does.

What happens when the body releases tension?

This is the part of network work that most people have seen online and found puzzling: people making unusual movements and sounds on the table. Sarah Jane is direct about it. "These are just spontaneous releases that people are doing, and it's an automatic release, just like a knee reflex or your heart beating." She compares the response to the body's ordinary repair work, the way a cut closes without anyone consciously directing it.

The releases are not uniform. Sarah Jane describes several forms. Sometimes a client weeps, which she links to emotional trauma. Sometimes a client screams, which may be anger or grief. Sometimes the response is repression surfacing, and sometimes the person has no idea what they are releasing at all. Physical discomfort can also be part of it. She is also candid that some practitioners in the network field concentrate on neck and back pain, while her own clients tend to come in for emotional and spiritual reasons.

For a reader unfamiliar with this kind of work, the most useful takeaway is that a release is not the goal, and not a performance. It is information about what the nervous system has been holding, and the practice is built around letting that move through rather than forcing it.

Is the body a map of everything a person has lived through?

Stewart asks about a principle that runs underneath the whole technique: the idea that experience is stored in the body. She points listeners toward Peter Levine's work and the book The Body Keeps the Score, which both argue, in different ways, that the body holds on to what a person has gone through. Sarah Jane builds on that idea but extends it. She describes the energetic field as something like a fingerprint, unique to each person, "almost like a map of what that person has gone through in this current life."

She goes further, mentioning that some practitioners see that map as including previous lifetimes, and that it can also reveal what a person's soul yearns to do in this life, not only what has already happened to them. Those are claims from a particular spiritual framework, and the episode presents them as part of that framework rather than as settled fact. What is consistent is the method: the practitioner works on the physical spine or touches a point in the field, and the release is allowed to happen on the body's terms.

What does success look like when alignment comes first?

The episode's description promises "a different view of success," and this is where the conversation turns from technique to life. Stewart observes that many people measure themselves by what their culture calls successful, and asks how a person's sense of achievement changes when they start from a different place. The discussion covers the ways external markers can leave someone feeling hollow, and how a more inward sense of alignment can reorient what they pursue.

The argument is not that ambition is wrong. It is that a person who is out of step with their own nervous system and soul tends to chase goals that do not fit them, and that a body which releases old tension can make clearer choices. Sarah Jane describes her own path in similar terms. The episode's description notes that she found her purpose through having to heal her own life challenges, which is the thread that connects her clinical training to her counseling and energy work.

Who is Sarah Jane, and what training sits behind the work?

Stewart's introduction gives a sense of the breadth of Sarah Jane's background. She is a spinal and energetic chiropractor and founder of Enlightened Healing. Her academic record includes several bachelor degrees, among them a major in psychology, health science, and applied clinical science. She is a graduate of humanistic Buddhism, a certified yoga and meditation teacher, a holistic counselor, and an energy facilitator. Stewart also notes that she is active in community work, including with Indigenous communities and people in need.

That combination explains the episode's approach. Sarah Jane is not presenting network work as a replacement for clinical knowledge. She is describing a practice that sits where clinical training, contemplative practice, and energetic work overlap, and she is clear that her clients come to her for mind-body and emotional concerns that a standard back or neck visit might not address.

Where to go from here

If this conversation raised questions about how the body holds experience, the practical next step is to listen to the full episode, which runs about 54 minutes and includes the later sections on success and purpose that this article only touches. Readers interested in the science and the psychology behind body-based trauma work may want to start with the two sources Stewart names, Peter Levine's writing and The Body Keeps the Score. Anyone considering network spinal chiropractic should take the same care they would with any hands-on practice: ask about training, talk through their goals and history with the practitioner first, and treat the approach as one part of a broader care plan rather than a stand-alone answer. Sarah Jane's own contact details, as given in the episode description, are her website, enlightnhealing.com, and Instagram handle @en.light.n.

[0:09] jane

[0:10] and sarah jane is a spinal and energetic

[0:13] chiropractor she is the founder of

[0:16] enlightened healing of which she has two

[0:18] locations

[0:19] one in armadale where i used to have the

[0:22] privilege to work

[0:23] and also a brand new clinic in calista

[0:27] she has a very long list of bachelor

[0:29] degrees including a major in psychology

[0:32] health science and applied clinical

[0:34] science

[0:35] she is a graduate of humanistic buddhism

[0:38] she is a certified yoga and meditation

[0:41] teacher holistic counselor and energy

[0:43] facilitator

[0:45] and one thing i love about sarah jane is

[0:47] she is very active in the community

[0:50] apart from just community events of

[0:53] which i've had the pleasure of going to

[0:55] she also works with indigenous

[0:57] communities and people in need

[1:01] she has a boundless knowledge of mind

[1:03] body and energetic medicine which is one

[1:06] of the reasons i really wanted to have

[1:08] her on today

[1:10] so let's begin

[1:14] okay welcome sarah jane

[1:17] uh

[1:19] firstly i'm so excited to have you on

[1:21] the podcast today you've been such an

[1:23] inspiration in my life you've all got

[1:26] such a powerful energy and i've really

[1:29] admired the way that you have run your

[1:31] business and the work you do i've

[1:33] actually had the pleasure

[1:35] of being in enlightened and practicing

[1:38] there for a little while when i was back

[1:39] in melbourne and i've had treatments

[1:41] from you

[1:42] uh but all you're around all round

[1:44] you're just such a joy so thank you so

[1:46] much for being here

[1:48] thank you for having me i'm actually

[1:49] really really excited because well i

[1:52] think well we haven't caught up in a

[1:53] while as well but just the kind of

[1:55] conversations that we usually have i'm

[1:57] just looking forward to sharing with

[1:59] your listeners and yeah of course seeing

[2:01] you and hearing you because it's been a

[2:02] while it has been a while and i know

[2:05] that you're gonna have so much to share

[2:07] with everyone who listens so

[2:09] i think it's going to be a really uh

[2:11] great time and very informative i'm sure

[2:15] so for the listeners that aren't

[2:17] familiar with what network chiropractic

[2:20] is

[2:21] because i know for myself it's very

[2:23] different to just going to a standard

[2:25] chiropractor

[2:26] uh i'd love for you to

[2:28] share with us how it works we i've seen

[2:31] all the little videos on your instagram

[2:33] with the bodies moving that people might

[2:35] like to go and check out at one point

[2:37] but i'd love you just to share a little

[2:39] bit of light on what you do

[2:42] yeah look it's not the typical or

[2:45] standard approach to chiropractic that's

[2:47] for sure

[2:48] um we a lot of the time uh working with

[2:51] the energetic field or using very gentle

[2:53] light touches to release tension or i

[2:56] guess resistance within the nervous

[2:57] system so this is still why it's a

[2:59] chiropractic technique we are still

[3:01] working with the spine and the brain

[3:03] we're just working with it in a way

[3:04] that's not manipulative in in the sense

[3:06] of cracking bones or um

[3:09] working in a way where we're trying to

[3:11] move a vertebra as such and back into

[3:14] place which is i guess kind of the old

[3:16] school way of chiropractic and uh we

[3:19] don't just focus on pain which i think

[3:21] is an important difference as well a lot

[3:23] of people when they normally see a

[3:24] chiropractor are going for possibly back

[3:26] pain or neck pain whereas as network

[3:29] spinal chiropractors we work in a way

[3:31] which is a lot more holistic and

[3:33] integrative and we look at the person

[3:35] from a spiritual aspect and

[3:38] soul aspect as well as physical

[3:40] emotional mental all of those things

[3:43] but we really try to connect

[3:45] all the parts of the human being and

[3:48] work with the energetic field to release

[3:50] tension in a way that the body is doing

[3:52] it itself

[3:54] rather than the practitioner

[3:55] manipulating

[3:57] you know the spine in a certain way to

[3:58] go back to a certain place

[4:01] that's more optimal we work with the

[4:03] body and allow the body's innate wisdom

[4:05] to move itself and that's why in those

[4:07] videos you see those people making all

[4:09] these strange movements and sounds these

[4:11] are just spontaneous releases that

[4:13] people are doing and it's an automatic

[4:15] release just like you know a knee reflex

[4:17] or your heart beating or if you cut

[4:20] yourself your body uh heals that cut

[4:22] it's that same energy that's working

[4:24] with releasing this resistance within

[4:26] the system and that's why it's such a

[4:28] privilege to work with but also um

[4:31] i guess it's it's utilized in a way that

[4:34] can also be seen as uh i guess working

[4:36] with clients with trauma anxiety

[4:38] depression uh

[4:40] things where people are i guess wanting

[4:43] to

[4:43] uh work at the root cause and not

[4:46] necessarily trying to fix something uh

[4:48] we're we're rebuilding we're

[4:50] transforming and uh allowing people to

[4:53] step into their power and be aligned not

[4:55] just physically and emotionally but

[4:57] spiritually and with their soul

[4:59] so i was really interested in what you

[5:01] were saying about alignment and it's

[5:03] almost like that the body actually just

[5:05] aligns itself spontaneously that the

[5:08] body really has its own inner wisdom

[5:10] that you just actually facilitate

[5:13] that change

[5:14] and would you say that it's you almost

[5:18] align physically and that then creates

[5:20] alignment in your clients lives through

[5:23] moving them energetically and then they

[5:25] see results out in their personal life

[5:28] and what's going on in their world

[5:30] yeah look it

[5:32] for me you can access

[5:34] someone's field either in a physical way

[5:36] a mental emotional way or in a soul

[5:39] personal soul kind of way so it's not

[5:41] just the physical we are changing but we

[5:44] are working with the nervous system and

[5:45] the storage of the nervous system so you

[5:48] know if uh i'm not sure if some of your

[5:50] listeners are familiar with you know

[5:51] books such as like the body keeps the

[5:53] score or systematics in in the sense of

[5:56] like peter levine's work and this this

[5:58] idea and notion that uh our bodies store

[6:01] what we've gone through in our lives

[6:02] they've store um all our experiences and

[6:06] we work with the field almost like it's

[6:07] a fingerprint that's unique to the

[6:09] person but almost like a map of what

[6:11] that person has gone through in this

[6:13] current life uh some might even say

[6:16] previous lifetimes but also what they're

[6:18] uh

[6:19] not necessarily just destined to do but

[6:21] what their soul yearns to do in this

[6:24] life form so sometimes we're working

[6:26] with the physical aspect so we are

[6:28] touching um

[6:29] certain vertebrae or certain points in

[6:32] in the actual spine to release the

[6:34] tension and we're doing it either in a

[6:36] really light way or in a way that's even

[6:38] off the body in certain different

[6:39] energetic fields of that person's

[6:41] blueprint

[6:42] and so by i guess aligning and releasing

[6:46] what no longer serves that person so a

[6:48] lot of our clients are either stuck in

[6:50] the past or stuck in the future and very

[6:52] similar to kind of a meditation practice

[6:54] we're trying to bring them into the

[6:55] present moment and in order to be

[6:57] aligned and be present there has to be a

[7:00] change in the body of what's

[7:03] what's holding them back from that level

[7:05] and so that's what's releasing and

[7:07] sometimes you'll see people uh releasing

[7:09] in a different way and that means it's

[7:11] different things that's actually moving

[7:13] through the body so sometimes it is an

[7:15] emotional trauma sometimes you'll see

[7:17] people crying sometimes you'll see

[7:19] people screaming which might be you know

[7:21] an anger or a grief response

[7:23] sometimes it's repression sometimes

[7:26] people don't even know what they're

[7:27] releasing

[7:28] sometimes it can be a physical aspect as

[7:30] well there are network cars who do kind

[7:32] of focus on that neck pain and back pain

[7:35] uh

[7:36] uh kind of notion still but for me my

[7:39] clients use more emotional and spiritual

[7:41] aspects and yeah it's amazing to see the

[7:44] difference it's just like you know yoga

[7:46] or a meditation practice when you are

[7:49] connecting to yourself back again and

[7:51] connecting to something larger than

[7:52] yourself it's almost like the choices

[7:55] you make just become different in your

[7:56] life they just become more aligned

[7:58] because your state of consciousness has

[8:00] changed so ultimately what we're

[8:02] changing is states of consciousness

[8:05] okay so you're really coming from a much

[8:07] more energetic perspective and really

[8:09] that whole person so it's not just

[8:11] literally aligning physically but you're

[8:14] really coming and treating

[8:15] on every single different level and i

[8:18] imagine that really comes through

[8:20] conversation with your client at the

[8:21] start which i know i've experienced with

[8:23] you

[8:24] and then just having that total body

[8:27] approach and also imagine what actually

[8:29] happens when you actually get them on

[8:30] the table as well does that do

[8:33] you actually feel the energy of what's

[8:34] going on with them at that point

[8:37] yeah so

[8:38] every layer is different and i just work

[8:40] with whatever layer is presenting at the

[8:41] time

[8:42] and that layer may feel different or

[8:46] have a different sensation to it

[8:47] depending on what its resonance is

[8:49] related to so if it's related to say an

[8:53] anger or um

[8:55] resentment or something like that it's

[8:57] gonna feel far more dense

[8:59] uh if it's related to something um

[9:02] where they've had

[9:04] you know it could be anything like joy

[9:06] in their lives you can also feel that in

[9:08] the field as well but we kind of work in

[9:10] the areas that are working well and so

[9:13] what i try to do is i try to find where

[9:15] the most energy richness areas are so

[9:17] where they are aligned already and i

[9:19] feed more energy into those areas and as

[9:22] a result the body then alters the other

[9:24] areas rather than me trying to feel

[9:26] blockages or stagnation or resistance i

[9:29] will go to the areas that have ease and

[9:31] welcoming energy already to them and

[9:33] already where they are in alignment by

[9:35] feeding more into that the body can then

[9:38] unwind the resistance and tension in

[9:40] those other areas so it's kind of a

[9:42] different approach in that regard as

[9:44] well

[9:45] i love that i actually didn't know that

[9:47] at all that you really focused on that

[9:49] and i think that's such a beautiful way

[9:50] of coming from it it's like it's almost

[9:52] like positive psychology isn't it like

[9:54] working with what's going well rather

[9:56] than working what's not going well and

[9:58] yeah continuing to build that

[10:01] uh rather than focusing on what's not

[10:03] going so right that that neck that

[10:05] actually naturally changes yeah

[10:07] definitely because the body's done it

[10:09] for a reason

[10:10] you know so i i really honor that that

[10:13] idea that if the body has gone into

[10:15] protective mode or has misaligned or

[10:18] created tension in fascia or connective

[10:21] tissue or whatever it might be it's done

[10:23] that for a purpose everything in the

[10:25] body is purposeful it's not up to me to

[10:28] alter that but what is that to me is to

[10:30] facilitate the safety and the context

[10:32] for the person on the table so that

[10:34] could be something that they're

[10:35] protecting themselves from that happened

[10:37] you know 20 years ago we don't need to

[10:39] hold on to that still in the body so

[10:41] we're giving the body permission to

[10:43] create ease in those areas again still

[10:45] while learning from that experience but

[10:47] no longer um

[10:49] in that time warp where it happened

[10:51] where they feel as though it's happened

[10:53] yesterday rather than 20 years ago we

[10:55] bring context and safety to the body and

[10:57] then the body's able to regulate

[10:59] emotions are able to regulate and that

[11:01] person's able to step into the present

[11:03] moment

[11:04] yeah beautiful

[11:05] and

[11:06] obviously there's confidentiality but

[11:08] what kind of transformations have you

[11:10] seen in your clients lives like is there

[11:13] any can you give any specific examples

[11:16] oh there's been so many um we've had you

[11:19] know all different things we've had

[11:20] things from physical aspects where for

[11:22] example clients have gone down the

[11:24] traditional route and they couldn't find

[11:26] anything necessarily wrong with the

[11:28] client they've had all these scans

[11:30] they've had all these blood tests

[11:31] they've had all these things um and

[11:33] they're just being told everything's

[11:34] fine everything's normal so a lot of the

[11:36] time clients will then try something a

[11:38] bit different or alternative

[11:40] and they might come and see us and we

[11:42] can feel tension in other areas of their

[11:45] body that you know maybe um the western

[11:48] realm can't necessarily explain yet um

[11:51] the tools that we have so we have people

[11:54] from all sorts of physical symptoms from

[11:55] like gut issues to sleep issues to um

[11:59] uh you know

[12:00] psychogenic things especially like

[12:02] fibromyalgia or um psychogenic seizures

[12:05] things like that are trauma related as

[12:07] well we really have a great response in

[12:09] that regard to

[12:11] definitely pain as well if the pain is

[12:13] related to psychological build up in the

[12:16] person system as well we seem to think

[12:18] that pain can only come from physical

[12:20] level

[12:22] whereas in fact it takes a lot of

[12:24] layering of um

[12:26] tension building and building to

[12:27] possibly get that physical pain but it's

[12:29] come from an emotional aspect

[12:32] so we get a lot of great results in that

[12:33] regard too but just people feeling

[12:36] calmer

[12:38] people feeling more connected to

[12:39] themselves people

[12:40] you know quitting jobs that they know

[12:42] haven't been right for them for

[12:44] 10 years people changing friendships or

[12:48] changing relationships or even just

[12:50] enhancing what they already have and

[12:52] changing their perspective on these

[12:54] things possibly instead so it becomes

[12:57] much more of a life

[12:59] altering alignment rather than just what

[13:02] they come for initially definitely and

[13:05] you know we can't uh exactly say what

[13:07] changes people are going to have it's

[13:09] unique to the individual um

[13:11] but yeah it's it's a beautiful um

[13:15] practice and a lot of people come just

[13:18] for lifestyle reasons they come because

[13:21] it's part of their self-care routine

[13:23] it's part of their uh you know um like

[13:26] brushing their teeth or going to a yoga

[13:27] class or going to a meditation class or

[13:30] whatever it becomes part of their

[13:31] spiritual hygiene to release the tension

[13:34] that they're building um especially

[13:37] you know if they've had a challenging

[13:38] week at work or um challenging

[13:40] relationship things come up they might

[13:42] come and then they get to release it on

[13:44] the table and it gives them permission

[13:45] to

[13:46] to sort through that stuff in a

[13:48] different way and and have the support

[13:50] and guidance of the practitioner um and

[13:53] it's quite a cathartic feeling as well

[13:55] when you're releasing it physically

[13:57] emotionally and mentally through the

[13:58] body um and energetically it's it's it's

[14:01] a feeling that um

[14:03] people

[14:04] tend to feel is um

[14:07] like a remembering of this movement it's

[14:10] it's quite strange it feels so natural

[14:12] yet a lot of people didn't know that we

[14:13] could do it

[14:15] yeah it feels like a real clearing and

[14:17] giving permission

[14:18] uh

[14:19] for ourselves just to release what we're

[14:21] holding but also to bring in changes

[14:24] in our own lives as well

[14:27] definitely i actually heard you mention

[14:29] on another podcast then in general that

[14:31] your clients

[14:33] uh say that they

[14:34] in general they want to be happy and

[14:36] peaceful

[14:37] and i find that with my own clients it's

[14:39] a little bit like the uh like a meta

[14:41] practice like love and kindness like

[14:43] needs to almost be happy and well

[14:46] right most of the time

[14:49] people look for what's going on in the

[14:50] outside to change where it's what

[14:52] happens on the inside that actually

[14:54] really shapes us

[14:56] where you know most people are looking

[14:58] outside that if the outside shifts well

[15:00] then i'll be happy

[15:02] so i was wondering if you could speak to

[15:04] that a little bit and about how people

[15:06] can begin to find that internal

[15:09] happiness and peace

[15:10] yeah well i think most people get to a

[15:13] point where they realize that the

[15:14] external doesn't work

[15:16] you know they they've done all the

[15:18] things on their checklist that they've

[15:19] been told is supposed to make you be a

[15:21] happy successful human from our western

[15:24] social construct and they do the things

[15:26] or don't do the things and they're still

[15:28] not happy um but it's that whole idea of

[15:31] consumerism and if we get more and be

[15:33] more and

[15:34] have more then we'll be happier and it's

[15:36] really only a you know a western

[15:38] philosophy that that's the case and

[15:40] that's why most westerners probably are

[15:43] the most unhappy in the world out of a

[15:44] lot of other cultures you know we're in

[15:47] a very privileged society where we're

[15:49] having more and have more access to

[15:51] things that we've never had before in

[15:54] lifetimes and it's still where we're

[15:56] probably

[15:58] yeah less connected to ourselves than

[15:59] others than we've ever been um and so

[16:02] when you do get to see other cultures

[16:04] you know when i've traveled around the

[16:05] world and i've traveled through the east

[16:07] and southeast quite a lot you just see

[16:09] people so happy with so little

[16:12] and you and they're genuinely happy uh

[16:15] not just you know like our idea of

[16:17] social media happy um like genuinely

[16:19] happy people and and they're happy

[16:21] because they don't necessarily have much

[16:23] they have all their needs met in terms

[16:26] of um you know basic survival and food

[16:28] and and shelter and safety but

[16:31] they're happy because they're connected

[16:32] to the people around them they're happy

[16:34] because they know themselves they know

[16:35] the people around them

[16:37] they have love they have

[16:39] uh true connection and true uh

[16:42] uh

[16:43] i guess that's

[16:45] that's where we lose it in the west we

[16:47] we have a lot of lost connections um

[16:49] whereas they're they just they don't

[16:51] want for anything they go internal they

[16:53] they are happy in the present they're

[16:55] not always future focused or goal

[16:57] focused um

[16:59] it becomes a simple life and i think a

[17:01] lot of us say we want to be happy and

[17:03] peaceful but we don't really kind of

[17:05] take steps that are congruent with what

[17:07] actually that means um and

[17:10] you know

[17:11] i think that's probably something that

[17:13] we all need to be aware of and this work

[17:15] kind of helps connect the dots of that a

[17:17] little bit more and get people to look

[17:20] at themselves and examine themselves and

[17:22] and

[17:23] why they way they why they are the way

[17:25] they are and why they do what they do

[17:27] and

[17:28] um bring a little bit more

[17:30] of sense to that so that they can become

[17:32] the person that they actually want to be

[17:34] and who they are before they were told

[17:36] to be who they are and uh build you know

[17:39] quality connections not necessarily

[17:41] quantity

[17:42] um and

[17:44] you know maybe have a job that's

[17:45] purposeful maybe it doesn't earn as much

[17:47] money but they they're bringing purpose

[17:49] and meaning into their life where our

[17:51] priorities need to alter um internally

[17:54] before the external will match and and

[17:56] that's something that i think most of us

[17:58] are working on

[18:00] absolutely

[18:01] i um

[18:03] i did quite a bit of study into

[18:05] happiness not so long ago and basically

[18:08] once our basic needs are met

[18:11] anything above that doesn't necessarily

[18:14] make us happy once we've had that basic

[18:16] need and i love that you really compared

[18:18] that to what you saw you know in asian

[18:20] culture

[18:22] move a lot more simply and we

[18:24] have just we we've lost our compass in

[18:26] some ways i think in the west and so

[18:29] coming back

[18:30] and finding that and

[18:32] learning about what makes us happy and

[18:34] learning what gives us

[18:36] a sense of peace and connecting to that

[18:39] both ourselves connecting to ourselves i

[18:41] think we've lost that connection with

[18:43] ourselves

[18:44] but also the connections around us we i

[18:47] think even

[18:48] like these last few years have made it

[18:50] even worse i think because we've lost

[18:52] even more connection but

[18:54] beginning to be able to to be able to

[18:57] bring that back is just so important

[19:01] it really is and i think i can't

[19:02] remember the study but there's some

[19:04] study where they've they've realized

[19:05] something once you earn over 70 000 or

[19:08] something like that there's actually no

[19:09] alteration in happiness so you know we

[19:12] you just have to look at you know what

[19:14] we perceive to be successful the famous

[19:17] celebrities you know they should be

[19:18] happy they have everything and they're

[19:20] not happy because they have everything

[19:22] um it doesn't work that way we think

[19:26] we have this false idea that once we

[19:29] have everything we want or we are

[19:31] everything we need to be to be accepted

[19:33] then happiness follows and it's really

[19:35] about getting to know who you are

[19:38] and getting to know yourself and and

[19:40] what you enjoy and not just you know

[19:42] becoming a lawyer because that's what

[19:44] you think you should do or getting

[19:46] married at 29 because you know who knows

[19:50] what might happen if you're 39 and

[19:52] single and not married or you know even

[19:54] though we have come a long way there's

[19:56] still a lot of these social constructs

[19:58] um

[19:59] where you know if you're not doing the

[20:00] norm um you're not doing it right and

[20:04] but not many people are actually happy

[20:06] and so for me i don't look at success as

[20:08] what people have i look at success from

[20:10] how much joy the person has how much

[20:12] peace the person has in their life that

[20:14] to me is a successful person

[20:17] so you have to really kind of uh delve

[20:20] into

[20:21] what you think makes some

[20:24] happiness uh i guess real for you and

[20:27] and yeah that's why i was so interested

[20:29] into buddhist culture and and um hindu

[20:32] culture and all that idea of um

[20:35] having having faith and beliefs in

[20:37] something larger than yourself and

[20:38] connection to something larger than

[20:40] yourself but also the ability to have

[20:42] this uh self-inquiry that actually

[20:46] for me helped me be more of who i am on

[20:49] this planet

[20:51] so

[20:52] sarah jane if you don't mind getting a

[20:53] little more personal i'd love to know

[20:55] what you've had to heal in your life and

[20:57] how you've gone about doing that

[20:59] oh lots of things how much time do you

[21:01] have

[21:04] um look i've had a very interesting life

[21:07] a very colorful tapestry of life

[21:09] um with a lot of

[21:12] experiences on all different levels that

[21:14] i think

[21:15] have helped alter me in a way that bring

[21:18] brings me closer to who i'm meant to be

[21:20] i'm very comfortable in who i am i'm

[21:22] very happy in who i am um

[21:24] and

[21:26] that hasn't come easily overnight either

[21:28] there's been a lot of things that i have

[21:30] gone through in life from you know being

[21:32] diagnosed with ptsd and cptsd and

[21:36] add and ocd and

[21:40] i had fibromyalgia at one point and

[21:42] psychogenic seizures at one point and a

[21:44] lot of um

[21:46] different uh personal traumas that have

[21:48] happened in my life to alter my

[21:50] physiology my system and also uh myself

[21:54] emotionally and mentally and physically

[21:56] in in the end which is why i learned so

[21:59] much about the body and somatics and

[22:01] uh

[22:02] you know i was doing all this amazing

[22:04] talk therapy my first you know degree

[22:06] was psychology and philosophy

[22:08] and then i went back and studied applied

[22:09] science and clinical science in terms of

[22:11] my chiropractic but i always had a large

[22:14] interest in uh

[22:16] you know the human brain the humans and

[22:18] why they are the way that they are

[22:20] and so psychology really helped me

[22:22] encapsulate that but also

[22:24] i was i was seeing my psychologist and

[22:27] studying psychology and i was learning

[22:29] so much

[22:30] rationally and i understood a lot more

[22:32] from that side of my brain um but things

[22:34] weren't changing within my system still

[22:37] um it helped me bring story and words

[22:40] and and that helped with my healing um

[22:43] but for me there needed to be more which

[22:46] is why i started going down the

[22:47] trans-personal psychotherapy kind of

[22:49] route where they brought in you know

[22:51] joseph campbell's work a hero's journey

[22:53] and this idea of like a dark night of

[22:55] the soul and because i i did go through

[22:58] a lot in my life and

[23:00] you know

[23:01] and that's just touching on the surface

[23:02] there's been a lot more in regards to

[23:05] that um but

[23:06] for me i've used every

[23:08] experience that could be considered

[23:11] uh

[23:12] negative or

[23:15] you know

[23:16] heart-wrenching and soul-changing

[23:18] experiences to rebuild myself in a way

[23:21] that's closer to who i who i really am

[23:23] and who i want to be

[23:25] and i think that's what we have to do in

[23:27] life we have to have less expectations

[23:30] of how we think life should be um and be

[23:33] happy with uh how it is and trust that

[23:36] it has happened

[23:38] not necessarily for a reason in the

[23:40] sense that everything's great and you're

[23:41] only gonna have positive things that

[23:43] happen i don't believe that um but i do

[23:46] believe that the things uh that we might

[23:48] perceive to be bad can sometimes really

[23:51] ultimately possibly have a a greater

[23:54] aspect of um

[23:56] you know

[23:58] connecting to consciousness within

[24:00] ourselves or or connecting to something

[24:02] larger than who we are uh that doesn't

[24:04] get given to you unless you have gone to

[24:06] the depths of the mud you know um and

[24:09] you do have to

[24:11] delve deep into those aspects to to get

[24:14] access to

[24:15] uh i believe um

[24:17] the beauty of of happiness and joy and

[24:19] real life in terms of a meaningful and

[24:22] purposeful life um and for me it's

[24:25] changed over the years we change life

[24:27] changes

[24:28] um and it's become a lot more simpler

[24:30] now that i've gotten a bit older you

[24:32] know just simple pleasures for me um

[24:35] you know spending time with people i

[24:37] care about telling people i care about

[24:39] that i do care about them um

[24:42] you know having cups of tea

[24:44] you know close friends close family

[24:47] just

[24:49] enjoying a really peaceful non-dramatic

[24:51] life and and trying to learn the best i

[24:54] can from

[24:55] from

[24:56] experiences and i'm sure you've heard

[24:57] that story of what's good or bad um in

[24:59] terms of that that zen um

[25:02] story of when this man's son broke his

[25:06] leg off a horse and everyone in the

[25:07] village came around and said oh no like

[25:09] that's so bad that he broke his leg and

[25:11] then

[25:12] he said well it might be it might be

[25:13] good or bad and then uh the next week or

[25:16] so that he was supposed to be sent to

[25:18] war because the country was going to war

[25:20] and he didn't have to go because he had

[25:21] broken legs and people like oh wow

[25:24] that's so amazing and it's this idea

[25:26] that we

[25:26] we label something as good or bad um

[25:30] when in fact we actually don't know

[25:31] whether it where whether it will be and

[25:34] so for me i

[25:35] i try to take

[25:37] um

[25:38] things

[25:39] in a way that's

[25:40] without that labeling and just come to

[25:43] that idea of acceptance and also that

[25:45] life sometimes isn't fair and life

[25:47] doesn't always work out with butterflies

[25:49] and rainbows but that doesn't mean um

[25:52] that life's not beautiful still

[25:55] yeah it's always been my experience if i

[25:57] look back on my own life very similar to

[26:00] you i've had a lot of things happen and

[26:02] i

[26:03] i look back at them all and they've been

[26:05] those pivot points they've been the

[26:07] things that have actually changed and

[26:09] created what i have in my life now like

[26:11] i wouldn't be where i was without having

[26:13] to go

[26:14] to those depths so yeah you could look

[26:16] at it at the time as

[26:18] this is not pleasant this is

[26:20] heartbreaking this is incredibly

[26:22] difficult however that has actually

[26:25] given me what i have today and i

[26:26] wouldn't have it without it

[26:28] no

[26:29] i love that story of

[26:31] and really taking

[26:33] the labels out i haven't heard of it

[26:35] described quite that way of taking real

[26:38] bad out of it and i really enjoyed uh

[26:40] that little story to be able to step

[26:42] back i've always loved the saying and

[26:46] you may have heard of this too that

[26:48] everything is here for us

[26:51] good the bad it's all it's all there so

[26:53] and again even if you take the labels

[26:55] out we're talking

[26:56] just seeing everything that comes in our

[26:58] life as as being some part of our growth

[27:02] and our learning that's how

[27:04] we move forward that's how we go to the

[27:06] depths and we learn what we need to do

[27:08] we we learn what makes us happy

[27:10] and

[27:12] then we also can come back to those

[27:14] simple pleasures like what you said

[27:16] i was thinking back to when i was in my

[27:20] you know mid to late 20s and i was so

[27:22] content i was actually

[27:24] very happy in my life but i thought that

[27:25] was boring at the time

[27:29] yeah that doesn't really make you so

[27:31] happy either

[27:33] we need balance you know

[27:37] yeah it's so interesting like but no one

[27:40] in this field of work really has had a

[27:42] simple

[27:43] or easy kind of life you know that's why

[27:45] we're in this realm

[27:47] um and you know we all have a story and

[27:51] i think

[27:52] we just

[27:53] we just forget we i think a lot of it

[27:55] has to do with childhood as well where

[27:57] we've got these expectations of how we

[27:58] think life's just going to be this

[28:00] easy you know thing like you just grow

[28:03] up you have a family you have kids and

[28:05] then you know like um and when you've

[28:07] not really gone down that path you start

[28:10] to kind of examine things in a different

[28:11] way and

[28:12] uh and examine what your path is and not

[28:15] just what everyone else's path is and

[28:17] you know i do believe that souls do have

[28:20] different

[28:21] uh reincarnations here on this earth and

[28:24] and my soul has a different experience

[28:26] to other people's um well it's unique to

[28:29] me and and so is yours and so is

[28:31] everyone's and

[28:32] i just have this uh i guess

[28:35] uh i don't know if it's belief or what

[28:37] it is but this idea that i

[28:39] i trust that

[28:42] yeah i trust that

[28:43] absolutely

[28:45] i've always had the the belief that

[28:47] we come here really for a bigger purpose

[28:50] that almost like it's designed before we

[28:52] come in

[28:54] and

[28:54] someone has to be really designed for

[28:58] men to be here for a conventional life

[29:01] no

[29:02] i don't know what i signed but i

[29:03] definitely didn't sign the conventional

[29:05] life thing

[29:07] i don't know i i don't know what i did

[29:10] but i definitely did not sign that

[29:11] contract let me tell you

[29:13] and neither did you i certainly didn't

[29:16] i didn't i had a great analogy actually

[29:20] that was before you uh come on to the

[29:22] earth it's like you you're all waiting

[29:24] at a bus stop

[29:27] and at the bus stop you make these

[29:28] agreements with each other about what

[29:30] you're gonna and what you're gonna go

[29:32] through and who's gonna be that person

[29:34] that you know really triggers you it's

[29:36] like i really wanna learn about growth

[29:38] and you know

[29:39] freedom or and independence so who can

[29:41] help me with that and people go no i

[29:44] don't want to help you look i don't want

[29:45] to help you with that and then

[29:47] please please you know and then they go

[29:49] okay and then you sign you know sign the

[29:51] paper you get on the bus and off you go

[29:54] yeah look i i feel that and you know

[29:57] i've i've

[29:58] had a lot of intense experiences in the

[30:01] short term um like i'm only almost 36 so

[30:04] i feel like i've had a lot of learnings

[30:06] um

[30:07] probably my biggest one was

[30:09] when my mom got sick very quickly um so

[30:12] she's had a very rare brain disease and

[30:14] within 24 hours was in a coma for almost

[30:16] four months and she's brain damaged now

[30:18] she's still with us but she

[30:20] is a very different person and her

[30:21] quality of life is very limited compared

[30:24] to who she was before

[30:25] um but that experience taught me a lot

[30:27] as well in terms of you know we aren't

[30:30] here forever and the people we love

[30:32] aren't here forever and

[30:33] life can change

[30:36] so quickly um and so for me i i really

[30:39] haven't taken much for granted since

[30:41] then i really think every day is

[30:43] precious and

[30:44] uh you know and that doesn't mean life

[30:46] is is easy you know life can still be

[30:48] really painful for me and for lots of

[30:50] people um but

[30:52] it's

[30:54] i've got a deeper sense of just wanting

[30:56] to do what i want to do

[30:59] in this life and if i want to go

[31:00] somewhere i'm going if i want to do

[31:02] something i'd do it if i don't i don't

[31:04] um whereas before you know i had a

[31:06] different perspective on that and so i

[31:08] think

[31:09] you know

[31:10] life has our greatest teachers

[31:12] associated um with our hardest events

[31:15] sometimes and that's not to say that you

[31:16] only learn from challenging events but

[31:18] for me my favorite people that i've

[31:20] encountered in this earth are people who

[31:22] have gone through

[31:24] depths of darkness that are just

[31:25] unbelievable and

[31:27] relentless you know um and those people

[31:30] are my favorite people because they it's

[31:32] like you look at them and you see that

[31:34] you just recognize each other you just

[31:36] recognized each other and and for me

[31:38] those are the people i like to surround

[31:40] myself with

[31:42] yeah

[31:43] actually you mentioned something within

[31:45] that that

[31:47] and i'd be interested to know your

[31:49] opinion which is really this

[31:50] juxtaposition of finding joy

[31:53] even when we're in a challenge or on a

[31:56] healing journey because it's like the

[31:58] layers of an onion really isn't it

[32:00] things are always rising to the surface

[32:03] if we're paying attention

[32:04] uh so that we can continue to grow

[32:07] so how do you see those things existing

[32:10] simultaneously

[32:12] well everything does doesn't it you know

[32:14] it's the duality of nature

[32:16] you know you you can feel more than one

[32:19] thing at once as well so you can

[32:20] actually

[32:21] feel sad but happy it's it's i think

[32:24] we're kind of taught that um you only uh

[32:26] one thing or the other but life's not

[32:28] black and white we aren't black and

[32:30] white we're so intricate

[32:31] you know so we don't we don't have to be

[32:33] just one thing or feel one thing or do

[32:35] one thing we can be far more expansive

[32:38] than that and i think it's a disservice

[32:40] to who we are as human beings and our

[32:42] our capabilities and our wisdom within

[32:45] us to think that we can only fit in

[32:47] these perfect little constructed boxes

[32:49] that we have decided that we should be

[32:52] um and life just doesn't work that way

[32:55] um and so sometimes it's a perspective

[32:58] change and you've got to look at things

[33:00] and and and think well you know maybe

[33:02] this hasn't gone the way i want it to be

[33:04] or how i expected it to be or this hurts

[33:06] and this is painful but

[33:08] you know using my mum as an example i i

[33:10] still had you know

[33:12] 68 years with with my mother that a lot

[33:15] of people don't get and that's not to

[33:16] paint this toxic positivity or

[33:18] gratefulness idea on it it's not um but

[33:21] i did i got 68 years with with my best

[33:24] friend

[33:25] that's a long time not everyone gets

[33:27] that um so as much as it's a painful

[33:30] thing that i got 68 years and not you

[33:32] know what i would have liked which is a

[33:33] hundred years

[33:34] um when i really examined it the idea of

[33:37] it it was i never would have been ready

[33:39] for my mum to go

[33:41] i never would have been ready for it um

[33:44] and and when i say go the person i knew

[33:46] go and

[33:48] it's

[33:50] it's something that

[33:52] we just have to realize that we are so

[33:54] significant yet insignificant all at the

[33:57] same time

[33:58] and that's just another duality of life

[34:01] yeah

[34:02] it's that that real thing you said

[34:04] earlier too that everything can change

[34:05] in an instant and

[34:08] being available to

[34:10] the present moment and recognizing that

[34:12] you did have this incredible time with

[34:13] your mum

[34:15] and

[34:16] it's not painting that like everything

[34:19] has to be joy all the time but how how

[34:21] beautiful that you actually had that

[34:23] experience and that you can take

[34:25] that that with you into the future and

[34:27] i'm sure everything not only that you

[34:29] learnt through her

[34:30] going through

[34:32] what she's gone through

[34:33] but also what you actually learned from

[34:36] her to begin with as well

[34:38] yeah and and you know

[34:40] for me it's it may be a bit of a coping

[34:43] mechanism to a degree but for me to get

[34:45] through that grieving process i had to

[34:47] eventually look at

[34:49] the beauty in it

[34:50] because i didn't i didn't there's a

[34:52] choice i didn't want to be sad and be

[34:53] miserable and there's a lot of things

[34:55] that i could have been sad and miserable

[34:56] in my life for for a very long time

[34:59] um

[35:00] and that's not to say that there's

[35:01] anything wrong with that but for me it's

[35:03] not in my nature i you know

[35:06] um it goes against who i am and who i

[35:09] want to be and so i i stayed with those

[35:12] processes i allowed them to come through

[35:13] me and move through it and

[35:15] and you know sometimes it's still a

[35:17] daily thing sometimes there are

[35:18] triggering moments that occur or

[35:20] you know i'll see a mother and daughter

[35:22] holding hands down the street and it

[35:23] will bring something up within me but

[35:26] i look at that and i examine that and i

[35:28] don't just push it down or push it away

[35:30] it's it's all opportunity it's all

[35:32] opportunity it's all teachings and

[35:34] you know i love to learn

[35:36] i i i've studied you know 12 years of my

[35:39] life at university i love to learn

[35:41] there's only the idea where it's painful

[35:43] that i don't like to learn and i think

[35:45] that's

[35:46] what what would i be as a human being if

[35:48] i only ever experience joy all the time

[35:50] it would be pointless that's not the

[35:52] experience um

[35:54] and so you can't sign up for just one

[35:56] thing you've got to sign up for the

[35:57] whole experience and um for me with the

[36:00] kind of human being

[36:02] that

[36:03] i've aspired to be

[36:05] those people have gone through

[36:07] really challenging things and

[36:10] and so i just had to look um for other

[36:12] people around me uh that

[36:15] you know whether it was people i knew or

[36:17] didn't know um as role models to help me

[36:19] get through that time and and do so with

[36:21] grace you know

[36:22] um there's a way to handle these things

[36:24] where

[36:25] it's an opportunity to better who you

[36:27] are and and better yourself um and

[36:30] that's what i believe my mum would have

[36:32] wanted and i believe that

[36:33] um i wanted for myself more importantly

[36:38] you said something key there which i

[36:39] think is really

[36:41] important which is the word choice

[36:44] we have a choice with how we move

[36:46] forward in our lives when these really

[36:48] difficult periods happen to us do we

[36:50] stay in the mud and we do actually

[36:53] actually have to process it like it's

[36:55] really important that we sit with our

[36:56] feelings and not just bypass it and push

[36:59] it away and

[37:00] [Music]

[37:01] obviously gets really stored down in our

[37:03] system but also the tools to grow and to

[37:06] learn and to and to move forward with it

[37:09] and like you say your mum would have

[37:11] wanted you to be happy and to be

[37:13] positive and you know feeling good as

[37:15] you go forward but also to take those

[37:18] lessons that you have learned throughout

[37:20] throughout you know any difficult period

[37:22] in your life

[37:23] um

[37:24] to keep going and i think that's

[37:26] something that

[37:28] we can begin to recognize

[37:30] well as practitioners or anybody any any

[37:34] anybody that we have

[37:35] that ability to

[37:38] be going through a difficult period but

[37:39] we can also choose to find uh happiness

[37:43] um and joy and and peace within it or at

[37:47] least after a period of after a period

[37:49] of time it's so important and that's you

[37:52] know my did my post-graduate studies in

[37:54] buddhism and

[37:55] you know i i really admire

[37:59] uh the buddhists

[38:01] i guess approach to happiness and

[38:03] approach to challenging things and for

[38:05] me

[38:06] um

[38:07] it just helps me make sense and make

[38:09] meaning out of some things that were

[38:10] hard and with the kind of work that i do

[38:13] as well i i can't do what i do and

[38:15] facilitate what i do for others and not

[38:17] have experienced a lot of what they have

[38:19] gone through a lot of what people have

[38:21] gone through and a lot of the time the

[38:23] clients that i get are reflections of

[38:25] who i am

[38:26] um and who i've been and who i'm

[38:28] becoming um but yes

[38:30] my clients are just reflections of parts

[38:32] of me and a lot of the time i feel like

[38:34] i can connect to them so well or they

[38:36] feel connected to me so instantly

[38:39] because there's an understanding of what

[38:41] that is

[38:42] of what that pain is and so with what i

[38:45] facilitate it just

[38:48] it had to be a colorful life

[38:51] absolutely i totally resonate with that

[38:54] as well

[38:55] like to be able to meet your clients

[38:58] where they're at we have to have had

[38:59] some degree of experience because we

[39:02] need to come from a place of having gone

[39:04] through it ourselves

[39:05] and i guess that's the wisdom that comes

[39:07] through

[39:09] having gone through through challenge

[39:11] and difficulty

[39:12] yeah and and

[39:14] you know

[39:15] it's for me a lot of it was expectation

[39:17] that life should be a certain way and

[39:19] once i let go of that my life just

[39:21] became easier um but yeah i had a lot of

[39:25] um insight from you know i did a lot of

[39:28] passion is when i was going through this

[39:29] challenging time i really had a

[39:31] dedicated meditation practice i yoga was

[39:34] a huge part of my life um

[39:36] all these other things and the work that

[39:38] i do has been a huge part of my healing

[39:40] journey which is one of the reasons i

[39:41] wanted to study to become the kind of

[39:43] chiropractor that i am uh because the

[39:47] the healing that i have received from it

[39:50] um has been life-changing and i wanted

[39:52] to be able to change other people's

[39:53] lives in that way

[39:55] yeah i uh that reminds me i saw in your

[39:58] bio that you typed into a job search the

[40:02] word meaning you were looking for what

[40:04] you wanted to do in your life i loved

[40:06] that that was just so great

[40:08] how corny is that

[40:11] why not

[40:14] i didn't have to go to the himalayas i

[40:15] didn't have to

[40:17] just go to google yeah just go to google

[40:19] and it worked you know

[40:21] but that's the other thing like um a lot

[40:24] of the life changing like life direction

[40:26] moments in my life have been

[40:28] things that

[40:30] aren't necessarily like these huge

[40:32] conscious choices you know there haven't

[40:34] been these major epiphanies they've been

[40:36] little trickles of just listening to my

[40:39] um inner guidance or inner nudges to go

[40:42] towards a certain direction and that

[40:44] i've listened to and that has led to

[40:45] these changes i've i've never had this

[40:47] huge

[40:48] epiphany of anything um that some people

[40:51] get you know i went to india waiting to

[40:53] be like you know hit with some kind of

[40:56] you know

[40:57] and not that it wasn't soul changing or

[40:59] spiritually changing it definitely was

[41:01] but i was like waiting for this epiphany

[41:02] and then you know i went to lao and

[41:04] cambodia and vietnam and thailand and

[41:07] all these countries waiting for this

[41:09] epiphany and life doesn't necessarily

[41:10] work that way you know just be open to

[41:12] receiving all the little um

[41:15] nudges or little whispers that you hear

[41:17] and get and keep working towards that

[41:19] and and i think that's when you get to

[41:21] know yourself and

[41:22] and also be curious and also have the

[41:24] courage to listen to the voices and

[41:26] listen to the messages you're receiving

[41:29] that's such a big thing isn't it because

[41:31] we don't often i mean i certainly

[41:33] haven't had that like you know lightning

[41:35] bolt moment either

[41:36] i haven't sat in meditation and somehow

[41:39] i mean i've certainly had little seeds

[41:40] of ideas but it's not like i've suddenly

[41:42] sat there and being like ah in life

[41:46] i haven't got that one yet either i

[41:48] haven't got that one yet but those tiny

[41:50] little things

[41:52] i i love what you said about having the

[41:54] courage really to take action on them to

[41:56] just to keep moving forward and to keep

[41:58] making those steps and somehow we

[42:00] we keep we find that not necessarily a

[42:03] destination but it takes us to the next

[42:06] step of our journey

[42:08] it definitely does and i think that's

[42:11] things aren't always

[42:13] super clear and we don't always know if

[42:15] we're making the right decision you know

[42:18] um but you have to have the courage to

[42:20] listen and to not necessarily make sense

[42:22] of it

[42:23] you know

[42:24] if there's something within you that's

[42:26] telling you

[42:27] hey

[42:28] this isn't right or this is right or

[42:30] whatever it is there they have to be

[42:32] your inner compass but you have to be

[42:34] able to connect to that part of you and

[42:35] i think a lot of us are disconnected

[42:37] from that part of us

[42:39] um and that's kind of

[42:40] why i do what i do as well to reconnect

[42:42] the mind and body and the person to to

[42:44] who they are and to connecting back to

[42:47] that inner voice and and learning to

[42:49] trust themselves you know um and you can

[42:51] only do that by sometimes making

[42:53] mistakes

[42:55] um and that's okay

[42:57] yeah absolutely i think trust is a

[43:00] really big thing and it's actually

[43:01] something that i have to work with a lot

[43:03] of my clients around is actually just

[43:04] beginning to actually trust themselves

[43:06] and to be able to make those decisions

[43:09] and sometimes things will go the way

[43:11] they want and sometimes they won't but

[43:13] not letting that stop them making those

[43:16] move forwards because we learn or maybe

[43:18] it helps us to pivot in a slightly

[43:19] different way that we wouldn't have got

[43:21] to that next decision if we hadn't made

[43:23] the first one oh 100

[43:26] actually just have to keep moving

[43:29] you just yeah that's it and

[43:31] you know um

[43:33] discerning between what's your voice and

[43:35] what's other people's voice within you

[43:38] you

[43:39] know that's a big one too like is that

[43:42] me saying that or does that sound a lot

[43:44] like what my dad used to say or does

[43:46] that sound a lot like what my boss says

[43:48] or you know is it your voice and is it

[43:50] your belief

[43:52] yeah

[43:53] that's a big one isn't it just keeping

[43:54] on coming back and going

[43:56] yeah is is this me or or someone else

[44:00] and we're surrounded by so many

[44:01] different energies and opinions and

[44:03] media just keeping on coming back and

[44:05] just

[44:06] having that self-inquiry

[44:08] yeah definitely and um

[44:11] you know giving yourself time

[44:13] and those those moments to inquire with

[44:15] yourself because i think a lot of us

[44:17] don't actually

[44:18] allow ourselves or have

[44:21] i guess make that a priority to connect

[44:23] with ourselves every day

[44:25] um and i i definitely do when it's

[44:27] something that um i need to do in order

[44:30] to feel

[44:31] um that i am

[44:33] living uh in this life and not just

[44:35] existing within it

[44:37] yeah absolutely me too meditation all

[44:39] the way on that front

[44:41] i am

[44:42] i am a big advocate for meditation i i

[44:45] know that some people disagree with that

[44:46] and don't think that it's uh for

[44:48] everyone and then things like that but

[44:50] um

[44:51] it's hard for me i've got a bit of a

[44:52] biased opinion towards it because it

[44:54] changed my life immensely

[44:56] oh

[44:57] the same for me and

[44:59] look every all things aren't meant for

[45:01] everyone but just having that time to

[45:05] just be quiet and just listen to that

[45:06] inner voice for a little while to every

[45:09] day makes a significant difference i

[45:12] believe

[45:13] perhaps they find it in slightly

[45:15] different ways if if meditation is is

[45:17] not for them

[45:19] exactly

[45:20] so i just wanted to ask a little bit

[45:22] about enlightened because you're a tour

[45:24] de force i've witnessed business grow

[45:27] and

[45:28] thrive and i've also really noticed your

[45:31] drive

[45:32] so i'd love to know a little bit more

[45:34] about your passion for enlightened and

[45:36] what drives that passion although i

[45:38] think you've already answered that but i

[45:40] just love to hear in your own words

[45:42] again

[45:43] yeah i must admit a lot of people have

[45:45] said this to me before that i'm very

[45:47] driven and very determined when it comes

[45:49] to uh the work that i do and i guess the

[45:52] business that i'm creating and and for

[45:54] me i

[45:55] i look at it as just uh

[45:58] it's hard to explain but it's an

[45:59] extension of self er it's an extension

[46:03] of who i am an extension of my purpose

[46:05] of what i was placed here to do and um

[46:08] for me you know

[46:09] it's not work

[46:11] uh it it really is an honor and a

[46:14] privilege to create a space for that's

[46:15] so needed and i guess i'm creating a

[46:18] space that i feel that i needed at a

[46:19] certain point in time um and

[46:22] maybe you know i'm wanting to create

[46:24] that uh safety and where people are

[46:28] you know

[46:29] welcome to be who they are no matter

[46:31] what that is in this space and um

[46:34] and love for who they are

[46:35] unconditionally you know we're not a

[46:37] traditional business uh there's not um

[46:40] anything traditional about it really

[46:42] from the way it looks to the way that

[46:44] it's

[46:45] from the moment you walk in it's it's a

[46:47] it's a unique uh place to be

[46:50] um and we've just tried to create i

[46:52] guess

[46:54] an epitome of energetics for people um

[46:57] to

[46:58] to feel like home

[46:59] to feel like home and bring themselves

[47:01] home to themselves

[47:02] so it's it's definitely growing it's

[47:05] growing more and more every day because

[47:07] that just shows the need for it just

[47:08] shows how how people are yearning for a

[47:11] place to be who they are and to be

[47:13] accepted

[47:14] um and to

[47:15] feel like they can express who they

[47:17] really are

[47:18] in a way that's not judged and um

[47:21] i think that's really the

[47:23] the um crux of the business is that

[47:26] safety and permission

[47:27] and and the rest of the stuff is is uh

[47:30] i guess the icing on the cake

[47:34] yeah

[47:35] and you feel like the minute you walk

[47:36] into the doors of enlightenment i

[47:39] remember the first time i came i came

[47:40] for a computer

[47:42] there was oh that's right

[47:44] and

[47:44] it was just such a

[47:47] really expansive experience it was it

[47:49] was a beautiful experience of what you

[47:50] created but even when i worked there and

[47:53] also if i came in to see you as a client

[47:55] as well just the minute you walk through

[47:58] those doors it's like you feel held and

[48:00] it's

[48:01] so beautiful you've created such a

[48:03] beautiful atmosphere and space and even

[48:05] the people that you hire within that

[48:07] city

[48:08] to greet you in the draw

[48:10] the minute you walk in you just feel so

[48:12] at ease i think

[48:15] and comfortable and safety as you said

[48:18] which is so important creating that

[48:20] space for people to be there

[48:22] um without feeling judged

[48:24] yeah being able to share who they are

[48:27] yeah and just you know um

[48:29] some people when they're coming for

[48:31] their first appointments or even when

[48:32] they're going through something that's

[48:33] super challenging at the time there's a

[48:35] lot of anxiety you know usually leading

[48:37] up to the appointment uh so for us we

[48:39] just wanted to create a space that

[48:41] people just you know wanted to go to

[48:43] um and we have done that we've got a

[48:45] beautiful community we've got people who

[48:47] come into the clinic all the time who

[48:48] don't even have appointments who just

[48:49] sit downstairs or i find them in my

[48:52] kitchen um you know

[48:56] we've all done it you know there's

[48:58] people oh you're down here you know and

[49:00] um it's it's beautiful it's a community

[49:03] um

[49:04] and you know i wanted people to feel

[49:06] like they could come whenever they

[49:07] needed to come and not just when they

[49:08] had an appointment you know to what a

[49:11] privilege to have that space where

[49:13] people feel like they can go there and

[49:15] and you know be with themselves and be

[49:17] supported by the people that they trust

[49:20] um when they need that

[49:22] and for me that's that's why i do what i

[49:24] do and um we have a whole bunch of

[49:26] different clients you know men women

[49:28] different ages different backgrounds

[49:31] it's very vast and even with the

[49:33] practitioners that work in the space

[49:35] they all do different things um

[49:37] but one thing is that we all have um a

[49:40] passion to to help others and to um

[49:44] really

[49:46] you know um

[49:47] have fun as well we all we all have a

[49:49] bit of fun in the clinic too but just

[49:51] create a space of of um lightness

[49:53] connection and um

[49:56] yeah uh

[49:57] safety i suppose

[49:59] i've always felt that as well when i've

[50:01] come in i've always seem to be laughing

[50:03] when i leave yeah or laughing when i

[50:05] can't even kind of real mixture of kind

[50:07] of joy but also

[50:10] getting down to business when we need it

[50:12] yeah yeah so we really um you know

[50:16] we um

[50:18] yeah we just have a beautiful vibe i'm

[50:19] very blessed the people that um

[50:21] work in the clinic and um the clients

[50:24] that we have i i can't complain for one

[50:26] instant

[50:29] so before we finish up sarah i'd love to

[50:31] know if there's one tip that you could

[50:33] leave the listeners with for their own

[50:35] inner healing journey something that

[50:37] they could actually do even today just

[50:39] something small

[50:41] uh that could help them what would you

[50:44] like to leave them with

[50:47] again probably a bit biased but try and

[50:49] find your local network's final

[50:50] chiropractor

[50:51] absolutely yeah i think it's it's been

[50:54] life-changing uh i can't i don't know if

[50:57] i would have got through what i've got

[50:58] through in my life in the way that i did

[51:00] in integrated it as well as i did

[51:02] without network spinal um what i do and

[51:04] what you see on my instagram is a little

[51:06] bit different to what traditional

[51:07] network spinal is it's something that i

[51:09] call spinal energetics which is a course

[51:11] that i'm releasing soon but it's it's

[51:13] basically working with purely the

[51:14] energetic field but um i started with

[51:17] network spinal and uh i think if no

[51:21] matter where you are google your network

[51:22] spinal chiropractor um and give it a go

[51:25] and um

[51:26] let yourself uh

[51:28] be connected back into your body again

[51:31] yeah absolutely and i highly recommend

[51:33] you if and your practitioners i know

[51:36] there's you've got a few people there at

[51:38] lightning both in calista and armadale

[51:40] that you can if you're not available as

[51:43] well

[51:43] yes so

[51:45] everyone go to sarah if you're into

[51:48] we would love to see you

[51:51] um and actually you just mentioned then

[51:53] i just wanted to ask you what you've got

[51:54] coming up i know i'm on the waitlist for

[51:57] an energy course that you're running but

[51:59] i'd love to hear more about what you've

[52:00] got coming up in anything you'd love the

[52:02] listeners to know i'm gonna put all your

[52:04] details in the show notes but in terms

[52:06] of

[52:07] uh

[52:08] what you've got coming up and i'd love

[52:10] to hear

[52:11] yeah so we've got spinal energetics

[52:14] coming up which is a course to learn the

[52:15] work that i do

[52:17] which is really exciting the world's

[52:19] really wanting this kind of practice now

[52:21] so we're we're releasing that soon we're

[52:23] in the pipeline of that it's both

[52:25] face-to-face or purely online so

[52:27] depending on where you are whether

[52:28] you're in melbourne or whether you have

[52:30] the ability to travel to melbourne or

[52:32] whether you're anywhere in the world to

[52:33] be able to learn this technique which is

[52:35] you know really really exciting um we've

[52:38] been doing a lot of events this year so

[52:40] i've been going around to different yoga

[52:41] studios hosting these energetic

[52:44] events you know combined with sound bars

[52:46] and things like that where we've had

[52:48] over you know 60 70 people in the room

[52:50] it's been incredible so my goal is to go

[52:52] around a little bit more this year or

[52:54] next year traveling and doing some you

[52:56] know collaborative things i've got one

[52:58] coming up

[53:00] combining breath work and energetic work

[53:02] as well they both sold out within two

[53:04] days so it's definitely something that

[53:06] people are wanting to experience um but

[53:09] hopefully we'll be doing some pop-ups

[53:11] around australia doing a tour

[53:13] and so no matter where you are hopefully

[53:15] we can see you and you can facilitate

[53:18] this work so um

[53:20] yeah hopefully doing some more traveling

[53:22] now that covert has

[53:23] settled down

[53:25] for the minute well i hope you come back

[53:27] to copy come up to sydney i'd love to

[53:30] come to one of your events if you do it

[53:31] up here yeah i want to so if anyone

[53:34] knows of any great um studios or yoga

[53:37] studios or meditation studios that would

[53:39] be interested in collaborating with me

[53:41] and hosting a space there for me please

[53:43] let me know um otherwise yeah i'll be

[53:45] reaching out soon to some individuals

[53:47] that i think um you know complement the

[53:49] work well and hopefully yeah do a little

[53:51] bit of a traveling tour

[53:53] oh

[53:55] amazing well sarah jane thank you so

[53:59] much for being here with us today it's

[54:01] just been incredible you've shared so

[54:03] much knowledge and i really appreciate

[54:05] you too as well sharing of yourself and

[54:07] some of your own personal journey

[54:09] uh it's really been such a pleasure to

[54:11] have you here and an honor as well to

[54:14] have you here and i'm sure the listeners

[54:16] are going to get so much out of this

[54:17] talk

[54:18] thanks for having me

[54:20] thank you gorgeous

Frequently Asked Questions

In this 2022 podcast conversation, Dr Sarah Jane describes network spinal chiropractic as a holistic, non-manipulative approach that uses gentle light touch, sometimes from just off the body, to release tension in the nervous system. Unlike a standard adjustment, it does not aim to move a vertebra back into place. She says it addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual sides of a person rather than only pain.
Sarah Jane explains that these are spontaneous releases, which she compares to a knee reflex or a heartbeat: automatic responses the body makes on its own. Depending on the person, a release may look like crying, screaming, or movement, and may reflect emotional trauma, grief, anger, or repressed material. She says the practitioner's role is to allow the release rather than direct it.
Sacha Stewart raises this idea in the episode, pointing to Peter Levine's work and The Body Keeps the Score, which both argue that the body holds on to what a person has lived through. Sarah Jane describes the energetic field as a kind of fingerprint or map of a person's experiences. The episode presents this as part of a particular mind-body and energetic framework rather than settled science.
Sarah Jane says a standard chiropractor is often consulted for back or neck pain and may manipulate the spine to restore alignment. A network spinal chiropractor, by her account, works more gently and holistically, focusing on the nervous system and the whole person, including emotional and spiritual aspects. The goal is to let the body's innate wisdom move itself, not to force a correction.
The episode's description frames the conversation around a different view of success, and Stewart asks how people's sense of achievement changes when they start from alignment rather than cultural markers. The discussion suggests that a person out of step with their own nervous system and soul may chase goals that do not fit them. The episode presents this as a reorientation of priorities rather than a rejection of ambition.
Dr Sarah Jane is a spinal and energetic chiropractor and the founder of Enlightened Healing, with clinics in Armadale and Calista. According to the podcast host's introduction, she holds several bachelor degrees including psychology, health science, and applied clinical science, and is a graduate of humanistic Buddhism. She is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher, holistic counselor, and energy facilitator who works with Indigenous communities.
The episode description lists Enlightened Healing's website as enlightnhealing.com and her Instagram as @en.light.n. The full podcast runs about 54 minutes and covers her approach, the release process, and her path to purpose through healing her own challenges. Viewers should confirm current contact details directly with the practice.
