Moon Salutations Yoga Flow for Honoring Your Feelings

Liza Colpa
Liza Colpa
Apr 16, 2020
8 min read
Watch · 8

The video opens on a mat with no music, no backdrop, and a teacher admitting something most yoga teachers would rather keep off camera. Liza Colpa tells viewers that she has wanted to push past her feelings, that as a yoga teacher she feels pressure to be positive all the time, and that this pressure gets harder to sustain in a moment of pandemic and crisis. Her answer is a 38-minute Chandra Namaskar, or Moon Salutations, sequence that treats the body's movement as a way into emotion rather than a way around it. It was published in April 2020, and the video has drawn more than 51,000 views. What follows is a close reading of what she is doing, why the moon is the right image for it, and how a flow built on hips and breath can become a place to acknowledge what you are carrying.

Why would a yoga teacher admit she wants to push her feelings away?

The most striking thing about this video is its candor. Colpa does not begin with alignment cues or a philosophy lecture. She begins with a confession: "I know I've been in a place where sometimes I wish I could push past feelings and not acknowledge what comes up." She goes on to say she tends to want to be positive all the time, "especially as a yoga teacher," and that in a pandemic this becomes very hard. She says it plainly and without apology, and that choice sets the tone for everything after it. (Liza Colpa, opening segment, 0:07.)

That honesty matters because it names the trap the practice is meant to address. Many people who come to a mat do so partly to get away from something. A teacher who insists on a bright face can end up asking students to do the same. Colpa's framing reverses that instinct. The flow is not designed to fix the feeling or to lift you above it. It is designed to let the feeling be present while you move, and to treat that presence as ordinary rather than a failure.

What does the moon have to do with human emotion?

The central image arrives early. "Human beings can't just be in one emotion," Colpa says. "We have to be in different phases like the moon." She continues: "we evolve, we change, sometimes we're at full, sometimes we're at half, and that's all okay." (Liza Colpa, 0:36.) The idea is simple, and it does a lot of work. The moon is never fully one thing. It waxes and wanes on a schedule that is visible to anyone who looks up, and nobody expects it to stay full.

The video's written description makes the same argument more bluntly: "Humans beings are like phases of the moon, and if we don't honor the phases within ourselves, we will just continue to fight against an ever-present current." That phrase, "fight against an ever-present current," is the logic of the whole sequence. Resisting a feeling takes effort, and the effort is often what wears people down. Acknowledging a feeling, even a heavy one, is a way of letting the current move you instead of bracing against it.

Colpa adds one more instruction that shapes the practice: "lean into the growth." (Liza Colpa, 1:00.) This is a small phrase with a specific meaning. It asks the practitioner to move toward whatever is arising rather than away from it, which is a different relationship to discomfort than most people bring to a workout or even to a restorative class.

How does the opening set up the practice?

Before any shape appears, the video spends several minutes on breath and attention. Colpa asks viewers to sit with the sit bones grounded, lift through the crown of the head, close the eyes, and take deep breaths that she calls sighs. She asks them to "relax the shoulders, relax the jaw," and to let the outside world fade. Then she invites an intention. Her guidance is open: it "could be absolutely anything," with the theme of "allowing yourself to be human, to be here, to feel without judgment and without criticism." (Liza Colpa, 3:14.)

This is a useful template for anyone building their own practice. The intention is not a goal to achieve during the sequence. It is a stance to return to when the body gets complicated, which, as Colpa notes, it will. She acknowledges early that "the sequence can get a little bit confusing and complicated," and gives the permission that runs through the whole video: "do what you can, modify in any way you need."

How does the flow move from warm-up into the hips?

Once the eyes open, the practice begins gently. Colpa leads with Kundalini circles, which she describes as getting into the motion of the body: send the heart forward, round over to the right, curl the tailbone under, bring the chin toward the chest, round over to the left, and keep moving in whatever way feels good. She encourages "creative free movement" and reminds people to melt the shoulders away from the ears as energy rises up the spine. (Liza Colpa, 4:20.)

From there the video moves to tabletop and cat-cow. Here the teacher's framing of the whole sequence becomes clearest. She says Chandra Namaskar is "meant to get into the hips and upper body equally, tapping into the strength as well as the flexibility." (Liza Colpa, about 6:38.) That balance is worth noticing. Many people come to hip-opening work seeking only release. Colpa's version asks for stability too, and the moving between the two is part of why the flow feels different from a static stretch.

Her instruction to "let go of right or wrong, correct or incorrect" appears at the cat-cow stage, and it is the most practical piece of advice in the video. Cat-cow is a place where people tend to judge their spines and their timing. Colpa tells them to play, to try circular patterns, and to get creative. That invitation to play is also an invitation to feel. Movement without a correct answer leaves room for whatever emotion has shown up.

Where do the feelings show up in the sequence?

The emotional work is threaded through the transitions. In child's pose, between downward dog and forward fold, Colpa pauses for the viewer to "tune on into whatever it is you're feeling, acknowledging it as okay." In downward dog she invites people to "let go of any emotions that do not serve you" while asking them to acknowledge that it is okay to feel what is arriving. She does not ask people to discard feelings. She asks them to distinguish between what is weighing them down and what is simply present.

The sequence then moves into a standing series with Anjali mudra, the prayer position with palms together. Colpa asks people to open their hands upward "like you're asking to receive something or you're giving something," and to exhale any emotions that feel heavy. (Liza Colpa, about 10:29.) The gesture is an open-handed one. It frames the practice as an exchange rather than a battle: you can release something and receive something in the same breath.

The lunges and heel-toe steps that follow are the most technically demanding stretch of the video, and Colpa acknowledges it. She says the sequence "can feel kind of awkward," and when the walking hands move inside the feet she offers a plain reassurance: "be compassionate with yourself." (Liza Colpa, about 26:15.) This is where the video's central theme becomes physical. The body is asked to balance, reach, and hold, and the instruction is not to perform perfectly but to stay with the effort and with whatever it stirs up.

What is the lasting takeaway off the mat?

The video closes with a return to stillness. Colpa asks viewers to let go, to take a breath, and to bring the palms to the forehead in prayer. Her final words are a blessing: she hopes people have "an amazing rest of your day." (Liza Colpa, closing segment, about 37:15.) The gesture is simple, and it asks the practitioner to carry the practice out the door in a neutral way rather than a triumphant one.

What makes this flow worth watching is not a dramatic claim about emotion or healing. Colpa makes no sweeping promises in the material; the description says the aim is for people to "feel lighter and more grounded off the yoga mat." What she offers instead is a set of permissions and a way of moving. Feelings are phases. Resisting them is tiring. Movement, breath, and a playful refusal to judge can make room for what is there. For a teacher who admits she has wanted to be positive all the time, that may be the most useful thing she can show.

Where to go from here

If the video resonates, the practical next step is to try it in short segments before attempting the full thirty-eight minutes. Start with the seated breath and intention, then add Kundalini circles and cat-cow, and only then move into the standing sequence. Keep Colpa's modification rule close: if a step does not fit your body or your mood on a given day, change it. Her channel also includes meditation links in its description, and her website, lizacolpa.com, is listed there for those who want to follow her other work. The most useful test is simple: after the practice, notice whether you feel a little more able to be in the phase you are in.

[0:07] hi my name is Lisa and this is a yoga

[0:10] sequence for Chandra Namaskar I know

[0:13] I've been in a place where sometimes I

[0:17] wish I could push past feelings and not

[0:20] acknowledge what comes up I tend to

[0:23] always want to be especially as a yoga

[0:25] teacher positive all the time and it

[0:29] gets challenging especially in moments

[0:31] of a pandemic in crisis it gets super

[0:34] super challenging to always be grounded

[0:36] in one emotion because human beings

[0:39] can't just be in one emotion we have to

[0:41] be in different phases like the moon

[0:43] Chandra Namaskar is one of those

[0:45] sequences that allows you to get into

[0:48] your feelings to acknowledge the

[0:50] feelings because we as humans are like

[0:51] phases of the Moon we evolve we change

[0:54] sometimes we're at full sometimes you

[0:57] know we're at half and that's all okay

[1:00] lean into the growth I feel is the best

[1:03] thing for Chandra Namaskar lean into the

[1:07] emotions and allow yourself to

[1:08] experience whatever comes up for you

[1:10] today we'll take it one step at a time

[1:12] because the sequence can get a little

[1:14] bit confusing and complicated do what

[1:16] you can modify in any way you need

[1:19] so let's come into a nice comfortable

[1:20] seated position ground down through the

[1:22] sit bones rise to crown the head come to

[1:24] close the eyes tune on into the breath

[1:27] tune on into the body it take a nice big

[1:29] deep inhale exhale sigh it out

[1:34] [Applause]

[1:37] take a nice big deep breath in and

[1:41] exhale

[1:44] beautiful last time big deep inhale big

[1:49] open mouth exhale and just take a moment

[2:02] to breathe

[2:10] - not into the breath and - money into

[2:18] the body and acknowledge how you feel at

[2:20] the present moment inhaling and exhaling

[2:41] tune into your body relax the shoulders

[2:49] relax the jaw and just allow yourself to

[2:53] be here present letting the outside

[2:56] world fade away and then this beautiful

[3:06] space of awareness connecting to your

[3:09] feelings connecting to where you are at

[3:11] the present moment begin to set an

[3:14] intention for yourself this practice and

[3:17] it could be absolutely anything going

[3:19] off the themes of allowing yourself to

[3:22] be human to be here to feel without

[3:25] judgment and without criticism

[3:37] so whatever that intention is go ahead

[3:39] and set it and let's open this practice

[3:48] with one loud ohm take a nice big deep

[3:50] inhale throne

[4:16] and let's go ahead and gently flip the

[4:20] eyes open beautiful let's go ahead and

[4:25] begin with Kundalini circles to get into

[4:28] the motion of the body so send the heart

[4:30] forward round over to the right

[4:32] curl the tailbone under chin comes

[4:33] towards the chest and round over to the

[4:36] left and just continue to move in a way

[4:38] that feels good you can begin to explore

[4:40] the opposite side if that comes to you

[4:43] naturally you can send the heart forward

[4:45] you can send the heart back but just

[4:49] allow yourself to move and breathe in a

[4:50] way that feels absolutely good for you

[4:55] inhaling and exhaling

[5:01] two more breaths of creative free

[5:04] movement and kundalini circles as you

[5:06] feel the energy rise up the spine melt

[5:09] the shoulders away from the ears

[5:10] last big deep breath in exhale and then

[5:18] go ahead slowly come back to a nice

[5:20] neutral seated position let's come onto

[5:23] the hands and knees for tabletop and if

[5:26] you have a blanket or a towel you can

[5:29] use that maybe to rest a palm the yoga

[5:31] mat for the needs but you don't have to

[5:34] if you have blocks you can put them in

[5:36] front of you so that they're easily

[5:37] accessible go ahead bring the big toes

[5:40] together bring the knees as wide as the

[5:41] yoga mat and send the heart forward to

[5:44] the right back and to the side and then

[5:50] take it into the opposite direction

[5:53] [Applause]

[5:55] let go of right or wrong correct or

[5:58] incorrect begin to play around with cat

[6:00] cows you send the heart on pressing into

[6:04] the hands rounding through the upper

[6:05] back

[6:06] inhaling tilting the pelvis forward and

[6:09] down softening the belly down towards

[6:11] the mat and roll the gaze forward and up

[6:12] and then on an exhale pressing and

[6:16] inhale sending the belly on down and

[6:19] rising the gaze on up and just continue

[6:23] to move and cat cow

[6:25] maybe circular patterns really get

[6:28] creative so Chandra Namaskar moon

[6:30] salutations are really meant to get into

[6:32] the hips and upper body equally tapping

[6:36] into the strength as well as the

[6:38] flexibility so two more breaths inhaling

[6:43] and exhaling last big deep breath in and

[6:52] exhale

[6:54] when you're absolutely ready continue to

[6:58] bring the big toes together and knees as

[7:00] wide as the yoga mat come to sit onto

[7:02] the back of the heels and now on down

[7:06] take a moment to just tune on into

[7:08] whatever it is you're feeling

[7:11] acknowledging it as okay it's okay to

[7:14] feel whatever is coming up for you big

[7:18] deep inhale

[7:21] and exhale

[7:27] last big deep breath in and exhale and

[7:39] when you're absolutely ready go ahead

[7:42] walk the hands all the way over to the

[7:44] right coming up on to the left filling

[7:46] fingertips feeling a nice stretch on the

[7:48] left side of the body

[7:49] inhaling and exhale and then go ahead

[7:57] slowly walk the hands all the way over

[7:59] to the left

[8:00] coming up on to the right fingertips

[8:01] doing a nice stretch on the right side

[8:03] of the body breathing on in and exhale

[8:08] last big deep inhale and exhale slowly

[8:15] bring the hands back to Center

[8:19] perfect go ahead slowly slide the hands

[8:22] underneath the shoulder send the knees

[8:24] underneath the hips curl the toes under

[8:26] and go ahead send the heart forward send

[8:29] the pelvis on down press into the

[8:30] fingertips arise the heart on up and

[8:33] exhale slowly coming back into a child's

[8:37] pose inhale sending the heart forward

[8:41] pressing into the fingertips sending the

[8:42] pelvis on down in a modified upward

[8:44] facing dog and then exhale sending the

[8:48] hips on back bowing on down last time

[8:50] inhale sending the heart forward sending

[8:53] the hips forward and down great

[8:55] raising the gaze on up and exhale slowly

[9:00] coming into child's pose bowing on down

[9:05] releasing and when you are absolutely

[9:10] ready come into your first downward

[9:14] facing dog making sure that the feet are

[9:18] hips distance apart

[9:19] engaged between the feet the calf

[9:21] muscles the inner thighs pedal out the

[9:23] legs round in the shoulders so round the

[9:26] shoulders towards the ribcage and then

[9:28] go ahead slowly begin to walk the feet

[9:30] towards the hands coming into forward

[9:32] fold at the front of your yoga mat

[9:34] sleighing from

[9:36] side to side hmm

[9:42] let it go taking a hold of opposite

[9:45] wrist forms or elbow swear the head yes

[9:47] with a head no blubber the lips to

[9:50] release the jaw just let go any emotions

[9:55] that do not serve you and go ahead

[10:05] release the hands on down ground down

[10:08] through the feet bend the knees as much

[10:09] as you need to and slowly stab a

[10:12] vertebra on top of vertebra we're gonna

[10:14] go through our first sequence of Chandra

[10:18] Namaskar there are so many ways to do

[10:20] this sequence so let's try the first way

[10:25] come to the front of your mat you're

[10:27] going to bring your hands into Anjali

[10:29] mudra prayer position and then you're

[10:31] gonna go ahead and open the hands on up

[10:33] like you're asking to receive something

[10:36] or you're giving something melt the

[10:37] shoulders away from the ears lift all 10

[10:39] toes Brad the toes nice and wide

[10:41] ground down pinky to big toe hug muscle

[10:44] to bone draw the navel on in melt the

[10:45] shoulders away from the ears

[10:47] take a nice big deep inhale into the

[10:49] palms of your hands exhale release any

[10:55] emotions you feel are weighing you down

[10:57] that don't serve you but at the same

[10:59] time acknowledge that it's okay to feel

[11:02] whatever is coming up for you when you

[11:06] are ready gently float the eyes open go

[11:09] ahead slowly send the hands behind the

[11:12] lower back to support the lower back

[11:13] bend the knees slightly send the hips

[11:15] forward open up in the heart space and

[11:18] then on an exhale go ahead send the

[11:21] belly to the legs bend the knees and

[11:23] then release the hands all the way on

[11:26] down on an inhale go ahead bring the

[11:29] fingertips in alignment with the toes

[11:30] and gently step the right foot on back

[11:32] ground down through the right fingertips

[11:34] sweep the left hand all the way up nice

[11:36] and high then inhale send the left

[11:39] fingertips forward and exhale releasing

[11:42] the hand on back

[11:43] in hell sending the fingertips seller an

[11:47] exhale to release last time an and axe

[11:52] huh

[11:53] now we have two options here we can just

[11:56] reach the left fingertips towards the

[11:57] ceiling or even better send the left

[12:00] hand to the left leg and then walk or

[12:03] heel toe the left foot all the way out

[12:05] towards the outside of the yoga mat come

[12:08] up on to the right heel of the foot and

[12:10] turn on to left heel the foot so both

[12:12] toes are going in the same direction

[12:16] plant the left foot onto the ground keep

[12:19] the right hip up nice and high and then

[12:21] slowly begin to lower the right hip on

[12:24] down and when you are absolutely ready

[12:28] slowly turn onto the ball of foot on to

[12:32] the left heel and place the left hand on

[12:34] down or turn the left foot back to

[12:37] Center release the right knee down to

[12:39] the yoga mat and house and the top of

[12:41] the right foot to the floor sweep the

[12:43] fingertips forward and up sending the

[12:46] hips forward and down opening up in a

[12:48] Crescent lunge take a nice big deep

[12:50] breath in exhale last big deep and now

[12:56] in exhale and sweep the hands on down to

[13:01] the inside of that left foot curl the

[13:04] right toes under lift the right knee off

[13:06] the yoga mat pivot the right foot down

[13:08] onto the yoga mat walk the hands all the

[13:10] way over to the right and then turn on

[13:13] to the left heel of the foot and just

[13:15] begin to move and sway release the crown

[13:18] of the head release the upper body this

[13:21] should be creative movement so in yoga

[13:23] philosophy the moon is this feminine

[13:26] energy this creativity and if this

[13:30] doesn't come to you naturally and you

[13:31] feel kind of awkward doing it you're

[13:32] like what am i doing just let that

[13:35] criticism go because that's kind of

[13:36] attaching to what you should look like

[13:38] or what it should be when really you're

[13:40] just going with the flow last two

[13:43] breaths inhale and exhale

[13:47] last big deep and huh and exhale

[13:53] beautiful slowly go ahead walk the hands

[13:56] this time all the way to the right foot

[14:00] turn on the hill the right foot come on

[14:03] the ball of the left foot so now the

[14:05] back of the mat is the front of the mat

[14:08] ground down through the left fingertips

[14:10] ground down through the right ball the

[14:12] foot and sweep the right hand up nice

[14:14] and high

[14:15] go ahead send the right fingertips

[14:17] forward and then send the right

[14:20] fingertips back inhaling and exhaling

[14:26] last bit deep and help and act beautiful

[14:33] go ahead place the right hand on to the

[14:35] top of the right leg heel to the right

[14:37] foot all the way to the outside edge of

[14:38] the mat and then turn on to the right

[14:41] heel of the foot come on to the left

[14:43] ball of that foot planting the feet on

[14:47] down making sure the knee the right knee

[14:49] is over the ankle and then send the hips

[14:52] down waving gaze over the right shoulder

[14:55] take a nice big deep breath in and

[15:00] exhale the last big deep inhale exhale

[15:07] go ahead slowly come back to Center

[15:10] heel-toe the right fit back to centre

[15:12] you know it's a lot of movements and the

[15:14] joints bring the left knee on down the

[15:16] top of the left foot to the floor and

[15:18] how sweep the fingertips all the way on

[15:21] up inhaling and exhale last big deep

[15:29] breath in exhale and slowly release the

[15:37] hands on down curl the left toes under

[15:40] step the left foot to meet the right in

[15:42] forward fold excellent in how to rise

[15:47] bending the knees slowly stacking

[15:50] vertebrae on top of vertebra till you

[18:14] last big deep breath in and exhale

[18:17] slowly come up onto the ball of the left

[18:23] sweep the fingertips forward up and back

[18:26] into that Crescent lunge send the hips

[18:29] forward and down

[18:30] open up lengthening from the tail bone

[18:32] all the way up through the fingertips

[18:35] last big deep breath in here and exhale

[18:38] release the hands on down to the inside

[18:40] of the right foot turn on to the heel of

[18:42] the left foot turn on to the ball of the

[18:44] right foot and then go ahead bend and

[18:46] straighten move in any way that feels

[18:49] natural and good bending and

[18:53] straightening allow any emotion that

[19:03] comes up for you to kind of move with

[19:05] the rest of the body last big deep

[19:08] breath here and on an exhale walk the

[19:12] hands all the way over to the left foot

[19:13] turn onto the heel the left foot come

[19:15] onto the ball of the right foot sweep

[19:17] the left fingertips all the way up

[19:21] fingertips forward and then exhale go

[19:24] ahead send it on back in house and the

[19:29] fingertips forward and exhale release

[19:32] the fingertips on back last time inhale

[19:34] sending the fingertips forward exhale

[19:37] releasing it on back then maybe bringing

[19:39] the knee to the ground heel toeing the

[19:41] left foot to the outside of to the mat

[19:43] go ahead turn onto the heel of the left

[19:45] foot opening up in that hip or taking it

[19:50] into a deeper variation coming up on to

[19:52] the side right of the foot sending the

[19:54] hip forward and down easing over the

[19:56] left shoulder taking a nice big deep

[19:59] breath here then exhale

[20:02] last big EEP and hell and exhale and

[20:08] slowly coming back on to the right ball

[20:10] of the foot heel to the left foot to

[20:13] center release the right knee on down

[20:15] inhale to sweep the fingertips forward

[20:17] and up exhale send the hips forward and

[20:20] down last big deep breath in and exhale

[20:25] go ahead slowly release the hands on

[20:28] down to frame the left foot step the

[20:30] right foot to meet the left in forward

[20:32] fold and on an inhale rise all the way

[20:35] on up aim to a baby back then hands come

[20:39] through prayer and release beautiful so

[20:45] let's go ahead and go into a more

[20:48] traditional moon Salutation so I'm going

[20:51] to go ahead and move my blanket so

[20:53] ground down through the feet lift

[20:55] through the arch to the feet hug muscle

[20:57] to bone draw on the navel on in and how

[20:59] to sweep the fingertips all the way on

[21:01] up towards the ceiling and release the

[21:04] fingers and the first finger and thumb

[21:05] are free as we reach them up nice and

[21:08] high

[21:08] then go ahead Bend up and over to the

[21:11] right as we ground down through the left

[21:13] foot and help actor Center bend up and

[21:17] over to the left

[21:18] [Applause]

[21:21] inhale back to Center exhale place the

[21:24] hands on to the hips go ahead step out

[21:27] nice and wide wider than hips distance

[21:30] apart see how wide we can get her stance

[21:34] and then once we feel nice and grounded

[21:36] turn the toes to face the corners of the

[21:39] yoga mat open up and the hands creating

[21:42] a v-shape in the arms bring the first

[21:44] finger and thumb together take a nice

[21:46] big deep inhale exhale Bend into the

[21:50] knees in the elbows and heleng2 reach

[21:57] exhale I'm gonna do that two more times

[22:00] with lion's breath so inhale to reach

[22:02] and then exhale Bend into the elbows

[22:06] Bend into the knees stick the tongue out

[22:12] beautiful inhale reach the fingertips on

[22:15] up last time Lions breath let out all

[22:18] the emotion excellent

[22:23] go ahead slowly straighten the arms and

[22:26] release turn the right toes to face the

[22:29] right side of your mat or the front of

[22:31] your mat in this case and then send the

[22:34] left toes to face the back of the yoga

[22:36] mat reach the right fingertips forward

[22:39] and down as the left hand comes on up so

[22:42] right toes facing forward left toes

[22:46] facing on back or parallel to the back

[22:49] of your mat taking a nice big deep

[22:52] breath in and exhaling trikonasana the

[22:57] last big deep inhale and exhale and

[23:01] slowly release the hands on down to

[23:03] frame the right foot send the right hip

[23:06] back as the left hip moves forward and

[23:09] bow on down into pod washington asana

[23:12] taking a nice big deep breath and exhale

[23:16] you can use your blocks underneath the

[23:18] hands if that comes to you we're gonna

[23:21] hold for one more big deep breath in and

[23:25] exhale beautiful guys

[23:28] so I bend on and to the right knee come

[23:30] up on to the left ball the foot release

[23:33] the left knee all the way on down and

[23:36] he'll sweep the fingertips forward up

[23:38] and back and then on an exhale slowly

[23:42] send the hands to the inside of the

[23:44] right foot go ahead turn on to the left

[23:49] heel of the foot and then slowly walk

[23:54] the hands to the inside of left foot

[23:55] come on to the right heel this is the

[23:59] harder part take your time if this

[24:01] doesn't feel good you can always come

[24:04] back to here last big deal

[24:07] inhale and on an exhale slowly come back

[24:12] to Center and wide legged forward fold

[24:16] bring the hands to the hips and helped

[24:19] her eyes all the way on up and then go

[24:24] ahead from here taking our squats again

[24:28] and he'll sweep the hands on up

[24:31] exhale Bend on into the elbows and knees

[24:35] and he'll reach the hands on up exhale

[24:39] Bend into elbows and the knees and he'll

[24:43] reach exhale Lions breath and how exhale

[24:55] beautiful go ahead release the hands on

[24:57] down turn the right toes to face

[25:01] parallel to the back of the mat turn the

[25:03] left toes to face forward go ahead

[25:05] slowly send the left fingertips forward

[25:07] and down as the right hand comes on ah

[25:10] and how and last big deep inhale and

[25:20] exhale

[25:23] go ahead slowly bring the hands to frame

[25:25] the left foot come on to the right ball

[25:30] of the foot

[25:36] Just Breathe inhaling and exhaling last

[25:47] big deep inhale and exhale when you're

[25:55] absolutely ready go ahead come on to the

[25:59] right heel of the foot release the right

[26:01] knee on down inhale sweep the fingertips

[26:03] forward and AH then exhale release the

[26:08] hands to the inside of that left foot

[26:10] and see if you can come on to the heel

[26:13] of the right foot and then this is the

[26:15] tricky part walk the hands to the inside

[26:16] of the right foot come up on to the left

[26:18] heel and then take it into the opposite

[26:21] direction so if the hips aren't nice and

[26:23] open or I should say if this isn't

[26:26] accessible for you you can always come

[26:29] back into that wide legged forward fold

[26:30] position and kind of do a little bit of

[26:33] this this is a hard hip opener so it's

[26:36] okay if you don't have it today be

[26:39] compassionate with yourself just allow

[26:42] yourself to feel whatever comes up for

[26:43] you

[26:44] lasts a deep and huh and on an exhale

[26:48] slowly bring the hands all the way back

[26:50] it's in the left foot coming full circle

[26:53] like in our moon gently step the right

[26:55] foot to meet the left and forward fold

[26:58] inhale to rise all the way on ah go

[27:05] ahead turn the toes to face towards me

[27:07] inhale to rise the fingertips up towards

[27:09] the ceiling inhale Bend up and over to

[27:11] the right slowly come back to Center and

[27:14] then slowly Bend up and over to the left

[27:17] coming back to Center release and hands

[27:22] come through prayer and just take a

[27:25] moment to honor all on everything that

[27:27] has come up for you today whatever you

[27:32] are feeling you know that it's okay

[27:43] when you're absolutely ready turn the

[27:46] toes to face the corners of your yoga

[27:48] mat and come into Milad sana a squat and

[27:50] go ahead sit on down bring the hands to

[27:53] prayer melt the shoulders away from the

[27:54] ears

[27:55] connect the thumbs to the heart

[27:57] breathing in and sighing it out big deep

[28:06] inhale and exhale last big deep breath

[28:14] in exhale place the hands on down bring

[28:21] one knee on down and then the other if

[28:24] it's hard to sit on to the tops of the

[28:26] feet or even the balls the feet you can

[28:27] take a block up look or a blanket and

[28:30] then send that right underneath the sit

[28:33] bones I'm gonna go ahead and turn it for

[28:36] you so you can see me so come to sit so

[28:49] as we honor the variations the many

[28:52] variations of moon salutations there's

[28:54] so many ways to do it just breathe

[29:00] we're gonna inhale the arms up towards

[29:02] the ceiling

[29:05] exhale bring the hands to prayer your

[29:07] thumbs connecting to the heart

[29:09] and how sweep the hands all the way on

[29:12] uh and exhale

[29:19] take a nice big deep inhale and exhale

[29:32] bring the hands down to the heart take a

[29:37] moment to breathe here go ahead place

[29:46] the hands onto the knees let's do seated

[29:48] cat cow sending the heart forward

[29:50] rounding through the upper back chin

[29:52] comes towards the chest inhaling then

[29:58] exhale taking a nice big deep breath in

[30:05] and exhale

[30:13] releasing the blocks from underneath the

[30:16] sit bones and moving them to the side

[30:21] sweep the legs in front come into our

[30:26] forward fold

[30:27] so the thing I love about forward folds

[30:30] is we can just allow ourselves to melt

[30:33] on into whatever we're feeling so inhale

[30:36] sweep the hands on up flex the toes up

[30:38] towards the ceiling and exhale round

[30:40] through the upper back chin comes

[30:42] towards the chest release and let go and

[30:48] just breathe breathe into the heart

[30:51] space and breathe into the body

[31:10] take a nice big deep and an exhale

[31:16] and slowly come to raise on up some of

[31:19] the soles of the feet together gone down

[31:23] through the sit bones and held to rise

[31:25] and exhale to fold chin comes towards

[31:29] the chest forehead towards the feet it

[31:32] doesn't matter how low you go it just

[31:35] matters how deeply you feel a stretch

[31:39] and it's okay to feel whatever you are

[31:42] feeling physically emotionally just

[31:48] allow the feelings to come as you

[31:51] breathe in and let them go as your

[31:55] exhale last pick deep inhale and exhale

[32:10] until they come to rise all the way on

[32:13] up bring the legs together and come to

[32:19] slowly roll all the way down onto the

[32:24] back allow the chin or the knees allow

[32:29] the knees to come in towards the chest

[32:31] give yourself a hug give yourself a nice

[32:37] squeeze and rock from side to side go

[32:51] ahead bring the knees on down or the

[32:53] feet on down some send the knees as wide

[32:58] as the yoga mat the soles of the feet

[33:00] together if that feels good if not you

[33:03] can always bring the legs out nice and

[33:04] long maybe you can place blocks or

[33:07] blanket underneath the knees that also

[33:09] feels right and just flip the palms up

[33:13] towards the ceiling and take a moment to

[33:15] honor all that has come up for you today

[33:20] all that you feel inhaling and exhaling

[33:30] creating a safe space for yourself to

[33:33] feel whatever it is I know I've cried on

[33:40] my yoga mat so many times or felt like

[33:43] crying even sometimes that I've been

[33:45] teaching so whatever this has brought

[33:49] out for you just allow yourself to feel

[33:51] it

[34:06] can you feel the beating of your heart

[34:11] can you feel the body relaxing

[34:21] big deep inhale into the belly and sigh

[34:28] it out big deep inhale into the heart

[34:37] space breathing in and sighing it out

[34:49] letting go

[35:49] and when you're absolutely ready you can

[35:53] choose to stay here the remainder of

[35:58] this practice I think we beginning to

[36:01] slowly invite moving into the body

[36:04] deepening your breath hmm

[36:11] and you can roll onto your side and

[36:15] press on up to your comfortable seated

[36:18] position

[36:19] I hope these moon Salutation served you

[36:28] in any way that you need it maybe it was

[36:36] just taking a moment to acknowledge how

[36:38] you feel on the yoga mat even if those

[36:42] feelings were hard to digest

[36:54] take a moment to honor whatever has come

[36:57] up for you as a part of the journey

[37:03] knowing that you're worthy you're more

[37:06] than enough and you are exactly where

[37:09] you are meant to be on as well as off

[37:11] the yoga mat bringing the hands to

[37:15] prayer thumbs to the forehead may there

[37:18] always be peace and love within your

[37:20] thoughts bring thumbs down to the lips

[37:24] may there always be peace in love within

[37:26] your words and thumbs to the heart

[37:29] may there always be peace and love

[37:32] within your heart

[37:33] om Shanti Shanti peace bowing down to

[37:38] the divine light that is within each and

Frequently Asked Questions

Liza Colpa describes Chandra Namaskar, or Moon Salutations, as a yoga sequence meant to tap into both physical and emotional feelings. In her 2020 video she frames it as a way to honor the changing phases within a person, the way the moon changes through its cycle. The flow is intended to build both strength and flexibility, particularly through the hips and upper body.
Colpa says she has often wanted to push past feelings, especially as a yoga teacher expected to stay positive. Her approach is to acknowledge what comes up and treat it as okay, rather than resisting it. She warns that fighting these natural phases of emotion is exhausting, comparing it to struggling against an ever-present current.
Colpa says the sequence can get confusing and complicated, and she repeatedly tells viewers to do what they can and modify in any way they need. She also advises letting go of ideas of right or wrong. Beginners can follow the warm-up, cat-cow, and child's pose, and take the standing sequence at whatever pace their body allows.
The video moves through seated grounding and breath, Kundalini circles, tabletop cat-cow, child's pose, a modified upward-facing dog, downward-facing dog, forward fold, and a standing series starting from Anjali mudra with lunges and heel-toe steps. It closes with a return to stillness and prayer hands at the forehead.
Colpa says human beings cannot stay in one emotion; they move through phases like the moon, sometimes full and sometimes half. She says this is okay and encourages people to lean into growth. The idea is that accepting these shifts is easier than resisting them.
The video was published on April 16, 2020, during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has more than 51,000 views. Colpa frames the practice around the strain of uncertainty and crisis, which is why she emphasizes making space for difficult feelings.
