Barefoot for 12 Years: How to Rewild Feet and Reconnect With Nature

Sky Cowans

10 min read

Barefoot Sue, a 65-year-old grandmother and viral TikTok creator, has walked barefoot for 12 years and completed the Camino Trail in Spain 29 times, often barefoot. In this video, she takes fellow explorer Sky Cowans through "Barefoot Bootcamp," a series of challenges designed to teach the body and mind how to rewild domesticated feet. Through public walking, nature immersion, and sensory practice, Sue shares how barefoot living reduces inflammation, strengthens foot proprioception, shifts awareness, and reconnects humans to the earth and their authentic selves. The philosophy underlying her practice is simple: reframe foot sensations from "pain" to "sensation," and understand that feet are designed for direct earth contact, not lifelong enclosure in shoes.

What Is Barefoot Sue's Journey and Why Did She Choose Barefoot Living?

Sue's transformation to barefoot living began with a pivot moment. After working in the corporate world—where she cultivated a shoe fetish and bought new shoes in every city she visited—she lost her job in telecommunications. Rather than scramble for another corporate position, Sue decided to take a long walk. She had heard of the Camino, a pilgrimage trail across northern Spain, and left five weeks later to walk 500 miles alone in winter. "With each step I took forward I walked back to my authentic self," she reflects. "And I discovered that everything I needed was within me."

Since that first journey, Sue has walked the Camino 29 times, completing about 15 of those walks barefoot over the last 12 years. This wasn't a casual decision—it was a fundamental rewiring of how she relates to her body and the earth. The turning point came during a moment of stillness by water. Sue removed her shoes and socks and placed her bare feet on a rock. "As soon as my bare feet touched the rock, there was a surge of energy that went through my body," she recalls. In that moment, she understood her life's work: to bring people back to nature in their bare feet so they could reconnect with the earth and themselves.

How Do You "Wear" Bare Feet as a Practice?

Sue introduces the concept that barefooting is not simply going without shoes—it is a skill to be learned and refined. "You're going to learn how to wear bare feet," she tells Sky at the start of Barefoot Bootcamp. "You're going to learn about how to rewild your feet because they've been in shoes, they've been domesticated."

The first mental shift is linguistic. Sue insists: never use the word "pain" when describing barefoot sensations. Instead, reframe discomfort as simple sensation traveling from your feet to your brain. "Our feet are designed to be barefoot, but we live in a society that has domesticated them," Sue explains. "We start to undo the idea that barefooting is painful and think of it as a sensation going to your brain. Now we have something to work with."

This reframing is not mere positive thinking—it reflects a neurological reality. When you stop labeling a sensation as painful, your nervous system processes it differently. You can then observe the sensation, learn from it, and adjust your movement accordingly. This is how feet rebuild proprioception (spatial awareness) after years in shoes.

What Are the Challenges in Barefoot Bootcamp?

Sue structures the day around concrete challenges that move from discomfort zones to natural immersion. The first challenge: walking into Walmart barefoot. This is not about physical toughness but about psychological resistance and social conditioning. Sky experiences the unease many feel—the stares, the self-consciousness. Sue had endured the same early on. "When I first started going barefoot, I was extremely uncomfortable. I was kind of embarrassed to be out in public in my bare feet. Everybody stared at me, everybody laughed at me."

Why persist? Sue's answer reveals her philosophy: "The reason why I wanted to keep doing it is because fundamentally I believe that I should have a choice. I should be able to choose whether I want to wear shoes or not." She used her visible barefoot presence to demonstrate that it is legal to go barefoot and to share the benefits with those she encountered. Over time, the internal resistance dissolved.

The second challenge moves into nature. Sue leads Sky to a lake, where the sensory environment shifts dramatically. Here, the contrast becomes vivid: Walmart felt dark, dingy, and disconnected. People were masked, spacey, on missions. At the lake, immediately there is aliveness. Eye contact. Presence. "You feel like you're a part of something bigger than yourself," Sky observes. Sue guides him to feel the soles of his feet connected to the ground, to sense the earth's temperature, and to practice what she calls "pachamama"—connection to the great mother.

A third challenge emerges unexpectedly when prickly devil thorns attack Sky's feet on the path. His foot bleeds. "My foot's bleeding," he says. Sue calmly navigates him backward onto safer ground and treats the wound. This is real barefooting: not invulnerability, but responsiveness and adaptation. Later, they encounter a bathroom with a visibly dirty floor—a test of what truly bothers the body versus what is merely psychological resistance.

How Does Earthing (Grounding) Work Scientifically?

Sky had previously conducted a week-long barefoot experiment focused on earthing, also called grounding. Earthing is the simple practice of placing bare feet on the earth. Scientific research has now documented that this contact helps reduce inflammation in the body. When your feet contact soil, grass, or rock, electrons transfer from the earth to your body, neutralizing free radicals and reducing systemic inflammation. This is not mystical—it is electrochemical.

Sue's practice of barefoot walking on the Camino and in daily life is thus not only psychological or spiritual, but also physiological. Every step barefoot is an anti-inflammatory act. The foot's 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles and tendons activate and strengthen. The dense network of nerve endings in the sole sends continuous feedback to the brain, recalibrating your sense of balance, posture, and spatial awareness.

What Happens to Your Feet After 12 Years of Barefoot Living?

At one point in the video, Sue and Sky do a foot check. Sue's feet show obvious adaptation: toughened skin on the soles, visible "lifelines" (the natural creases that deepen with use), and an overall appearance of strength and presence. The skin is not raw or damaged, but rather refined and resilient. This is what rewilded feet look like.

The transformation is not instantaneous. It takes time for nerve endings to recalibrate, for calluses to form in protective ways, and for the foot's intrinsic muscles to rebuild. But the result is feet that are more responsive, more proprioceptively aware, and more deeply connected to the ground beneath you. Importantly, this is not the same as the thick, insensitive calluses that can develop on feet that wear shoes. Barefoot feet develop sensitivity within strength.

How Does Barefoot Walking Change Your Awareness in Nature?

As Sky and Sue walk through a forest and wetland area, Sue teaches him to track sensations. "Feel the soles of your feet connected to the ground. Feel the temperature of the earth. Notice the feeling of groundedness." She encourages him to observe: Is the ground wet? Rough? Soft? These are not passive observations but active conversations between your body and the living earth.

"You will learn things from barefooting that you can't learn in a book," Sue tells him. "It just comes to you." When they encounter mud and clay, Sue describes the sensation: "Squish between your toes, it's like clay." This sensory richness is what shoes remove. Shoes insulate you from the earth's texture, temperature, and aliveness. Barefoot walking restores the dialogue.

The wetland presents another learning: how to lift your feet to avoid injury while still maintaining contact. Sue instructs Sky: "Lift your feet up when you're walking through anything like this that way you won't hurt your foot." And then the nuanced instruction on weight transfer: "And then move your weight." Each footfall becomes a micro-practice in presence and proprioceptive awareness.

What Role Does Wim Hof Training Play in Sue's Practice?

Sue is also a certified Wim Hof instructor, having trained in Poland. She was one of six women in a group of 50-plus men—a testament to her commitment and resilience. The Wim Hof Method emphasizes cold exposure, breathwork, and mental resilience. These practices dovetail with barefoot living: both train the nervous system to remain calm and responsive under stress, both rebuild trust in the body's natural capabilities, and both strip away unnecessary layers of protection to reveal innate strength.

What Is the Spiritual Dimension of Barefoot Living?

Beneath the biomechanics and sensory training lies a spiritual underpinning. Sue frames barefoot living as a return to wholeness and authenticity. The Camino walks were explicitly spiritual journeys. "I walked back to my authentic self," she says. "And discovered that everything I needed was within me."

The connection to "Pachamama," the great mother in indigenous Andean cosmology, is not symbolic only. For Sue, touching the earth directly is a form of communication, a way of receiving wisdom that exists in nature itself. "By connecting to her, we can also gain her wisdom." This wisdom comes not as information but as lived experience—the felt sense of belonging to something larger than the individual self.

Sue also reflects on the state of modern humanity with clear eyes. When discussing the contrast between the disconnected energy in Walmart and the aliveness in nature, she notes: "I think about humanity and the state that we're in. When you're in those kinds of environments, and then you come out and you're actually barefoot and you realize what you're stepping on." The earth itself becomes a mirror for what we have forgotten about ourselves.

How Can Beginners Start a Barefoot Practice?

Sue's bootcamp suggests a practical progression. Start indoors or in a safe, controlled environment to let your feet adjust. Then venture into public spaces—not to prove anything, but to practice psychological resilience and to normalize barefoot living. Move progressively to natural environments: grass, then trails, then more challenging terrain. Throughout, practice the mental shift from "pain" to "sensation." Notice what your feet tell you. Lift your feet mindfully. Feel the earth's temperature and texture.

Sue also emphasizes that barefoot living is a choice—and that choice itself is the point. "I fundamentally believe that I should have a choice. I should be able to choose whether I want to wear shoes or not." This is not asceticism or rejection of shoes as evil. It is reclamation of bodily autonomy and reconnection with the earth as a fundamental human right and capability.

Where to Go From Here

If you are interested in barefoot living and rewilding your feet, start small. Remove your shoes in a safe space—indoors, in your home. Notice the sensations. Let your nervous system adjust. Then practice outdoors on grass or soft earth. Gradually increase complexity and duration. Track your experience not as pain tolerance but as sensory awareness building. If you want to deepen your practice, Sue's books and online resources provide guidance. Consider the Camino as an ultimate barefoot pilgrimage—Sue has walked it 29 times and can attest to its transformative power. Most importantly, remember Sue's core teaching: your feet are designed for earth contact. Rewilding them is not a trend but a return to your natural state. The earth is waiting to speak to you through the soles of your feet.

[0:35] account she has videos with millions of

[0:37] views about her barefoot lifestyle in

[0:41] [Music]

[0:43] how canada and she's also a wim hof

[0:46] instructor she told me that she did the

[0:48] wim hof training in poland and she was

[0:51] one of six women amongst a group of

[0:53] 50-plus men so i'm going to meet her

[0:55] today and she's going to take me through

[0:57] barefoot boot camp i did a video before

[0:59] where i went barefoot for a full week to

[1:01] try out this thing called earthing

[1:03] earthing also known as grounding is

[1:05] literally just the practice of putting

[1:07] your bare feet on the earth but we now

[1:09] know from scientific research that this

[1:12] actually helps reduce inflammation in

[1:14] the body i think we're here it's just

[1:16] very interesting timing because i found

[1:18] out about sue i got in touch with her we

[1:20] had a conversation and she said oh i'm

[1:23] coming to california next week and i

[1:25] said let's make this video happen now

[1:27] before we meet barefoot zoo i want to

[1:28] remind y'all to please like this video

[1:31] and subscribe to the channel if you

[1:32] haven't

[1:36] already so excited to meet you i'm so

[1:41] are you ready for this i am so ready

[1:43] well i got my shoes on so we gotta do

[1:46] something about that we'll start off by

[1:50] i love your toys oh it's my favorite

[1:52] color me too look oh oh yeah i got the

[1:57] mermaid yeah i've been able to just take

[1:59] your shoes and socks off it feels so

[2:01] good yeah it's so freeing isn't it many

[2:05] years ago i worked in the corporate

[2:06] world and i had really a shoe fetish i

[2:10] loved buying shoes wherever i was in the

[2:13] world i always bought myself a new pair

[2:14] of shoes and so it's really interesting

[2:16] that now i have no interest in shoes at

[2:19] all what are we going to be doing today

[2:21] this is barefoot boot camp basically

[2:23] you're going to learn how to wear bare

[2:25] feet you're going to learn about how to

[2:26] rewild your feet because they've been in

[2:29] shoes they've been domesticated i'm not

[2:31] only going to show you how to do that

[2:33] but i'm going to talk to you a little

[2:34] bit about the science behind it and then

[2:36] you're going to experience everything

[2:38] because that's when we really believe in

[2:40] something is when we can experience it

[2:42] for ourselves so i'm going to give you

[2:43] some challenges to complete challenges

[2:46] oh no yeah oh yeah the other thing that

[2:50] i'm going to ask you to do today is to

[2:53] never use the word paint our feet are

[2:55] designed to be barefoot but we live in a

[2:58] society that has domesticated them we

[3:00] start to undo the idea that barefooting

[3:03] is painful and think of it as a

[3:05] sensation going to your brain now we

[3:07] have something to work with our first

[3:09] challenge will be to go out in public

[3:11] and we're going to go into a walmart

[3:14] store how do you feel about that

[3:16] well i don't i've never really driven

[3:17] with bare feet well it's legal to drive

[3:20] barefoot oh

[3:22] okay here we are at walmart

[3:24] okay you're really a walmart shopper are

[3:26] you

[3:27] no i don't like big chain stores this

[3:31] will be interesting to go into like such

[3:32] a consumerist store and see what happens

[3:42] there were definitely some some looks

[3:44] when i first started going barefoot i

[3:46] was extremely uncomfortable i was kind

[3:49] of embarrassed to be out in public in my

[3:52] bare feet everybody stared at me

[3:54] everybody laughed at me and the reason

[3:56] why i wanted to keep doing it is because

[3:58] of fundamentally i believe that i should

[4:01] have a choice i should be able to choose

[4:03] whether i want to wear shoes or not even

[4:05] though i was uncomfortable going into

[4:08] stores and restaurants at first i kept

[4:10] doing it because i wanted to make the

[4:12] point that it's not illegal to go

[4:15] barefoot and there were many people

[4:17] along my path that i met that i was able

[4:20] to share the benefits of barefooting

[4:23] what's next sue we're going into nature

[4:26] we're going to lake success and

[4:28] hopefully it will be a successful day

[4:33] one day i went into work and found out

[4:36] that i had lost my job and thought what

[4:38] am i going to do now maybe i could just

[4:40] go and get another job in

[4:41] telecommunications and then i thought

[4:44] about maybe i'll go for a long walk and

[4:47] i'd heard about this trail called the

[4:49] camino and i left five weeks later and

[4:52] walked 500 miles across the north of

[4:55] spain i went alone in the winter with

[4:58] each step i took forward i walked back

[5:00] to my authentic self and discovered that

[5:03] everything i needed was within me and

[5:05] this was the beginning of a real

[5:08] spiritual journey since then i've walked

[5:11] 29 times i walk the last 12 years

[5:15] probably about 15 camino walks where i

[5:18] did most of it barefoot i forgot to do

[5:20] this when we first started but i want to

[5:22] do it now i want to get a little foot

[5:25] check to see how at the beginning of the

[5:27] day

[5:28] my foot is so far looks good and let's

[5:31] see your feet i actually really want to

[5:32] see the bottom of your feet you can tell

[5:34] that you have been doing this like this

[5:36] skin on your

[5:37] lifelines in my feet oh my gosh that

[5:41] mountain is beautiful oh do you like

[5:43] that that's gorgeous well we just might

[5:46] be heading over there we're gonna hike

[5:48] that maybe yes

[5:50] all right mountain we're coming for you

[5:52] barefoot shoe and sky the adventures

[5:55] the adventures of barefoot soon skye

[5:59] finally we get to connect with nature

[6:03] that feels good yeah wow it's beautiful

[6:06] isn't it such a huge contrast between

[6:09] walmart and now where we are just a few

[6:12] moments later walmart is so dark and

[6:14] dingy and just stuff everywhere and you

[6:17] come here it's vibrant bright and clear

[6:19] and completely different feeling notice

[6:21] the people when they were walking around

[6:22] walmart they were like completely sort

[6:25] of spacey got everyone's masks on

[6:27] nobody's connected really here making

[6:30] eye contact they're just on a mission

[6:32] whereas here right away you feel like

[6:34] smiling yeah right away you feel alive

[6:38] right away you feel like you're a part

[6:39] of something bigger than yourself now

[6:42] what i want you to do is feel the soles

[6:44] of your feet connected to the ground

[6:46] feel the temperature of the earth notice

[6:49] the feeling of groundedness this is

[6:52] pachamama the great mother nature we're

[6:54] now connected to her and by connecting

[6:57] to her we can also gain her wisdom you

[7:00] will learn things from barefooting that

[7:02] you can't learn in a book it just comes

[7:05] to you

[7:06] my barefoot journey started one day when

[7:08] i was sitting down by the water i

[7:10] decided that i would take my shoes and

[7:12] socks off and i put my feet on the rock

[7:14] as soon as my bare feet touched the rock

[7:17] there was a surge of energy that went

[7:19] through my body and i remember just

[7:21] looking up to the sky and thinking i get

[7:24] it i'm supposed to be barefoot i

[7:26] understood that message is coming from

[7:28] mother nature and i knew in that moment

[7:30] that my work in the world was to bring

[7:32] people back to the forest in their bare

[7:35] feet so that they could reconnect with

[7:37] her so as you're walking i want you to

[7:40] think about the sensations that you're

[7:42] experiencing on the soles of your feet

[7:45] okay so think about is it wet is it

[7:48] rough what are those sensations and

[7:50] think about those sensations are going

[7:51] from your feet right up to your brain

[7:53] and lift your feet up when you're

[7:55] walking through anything like this that

[7:58] way you won't hurt your foot oh this is

[8:00] not good

[8:04] oh my gosh is it stuck ow

[8:08] that's nice this is not fun

[8:16] how do we get out of this okay we have

[8:18] to go backwards right on to the gravel

[8:20] that's it

[8:21] there's some there too they're still ow

[8:25] sucks

[8:29] my foot's bleeding my foot is bleeding

[8:32] we were just trying to get to the

[8:34] restroom really quick and boom the

[8:36] prickly devil thorns attack us

[8:39] i didn't know they were there okay so

[8:41] we're about to use the bathroom you walk

[8:43] in the bathroom

[8:45] i do

[8:46] yeah yeah it's

[8:48] pretty okay

[8:50] it's just a bathroom and if it's

[8:52] relatively clean it doesn't bother me at

[8:54] all no but look at it it's not bad this

[8:57] is like the least clean bathroom floor

[8:59] i've ever seen are you ready for what

[9:01] two

[9:02] we're about to go on a journey we're

[9:04] gonna follow this path here we're gonna

[9:06] go through a forest and into a wildlife

[9:09] sanctuary and then up a mountain what

[9:12] all barefoot

[9:13] oh my gosh are you ready

[9:15] i guess so you can do it

[9:18] we have kind of like a long journey oh

[9:21] wow

[9:22] there's mud you're very excited about

[9:26] this mud i love mud do you want to get

[9:28] in the mud sure show me how soon let's

[9:31] do it oh this feels so good let it

[9:34] squish between your toes it's like clay

[9:38] yes and it is actually healing it does

[9:40] heal your bare feet the science behind

[9:43] earthing has shown us that we can reduce

[9:46] inflammation we can enhance or improve

[9:48] our immune system and have a stronger

[9:51] heart being in nature has been

[9:53] scientifically proven to be good for our

[9:55] health people are experiencing that and

[9:57] they're recognizing the benefits and

[9:59] that's why there are more people doing

[10:01] it who would leave

[10:03] this look at it

[10:05] some poor bird might try to bite it or

[10:08] swallow it or i noticed before you also

[10:11] were picking up trash is that something

[10:13] you do all the time yeah of course i

[10:15] want to take the garbage back home and

[10:17] yeah let me put it in my bag and we can

[10:19] get rid of it don't even get me started

[10:21] on the excessive plastic the last two

[10:24] years have produced

[10:25] i'm like what are we doing

[10:27] human i sometimes kind of feel hopeless

[10:30] about humanity and the state that we're

[10:33] in and how there seems to be a huge lack

[10:36] of connection with nature this day is

[10:39] actually really inspiring me when you go

[10:41] barefoot i think it makes you become

[10:43] more of an environmentalist because you

[10:45] realize what you're stepping on

[10:47] is there anything else before we do the

[10:49] climb well we have another challenge

[10:52] yes sue we are going to learn how to

[10:55] walk on broken glass

[10:58] okay so we're going to land foot as

[11:00] gently as you possibly okay wait wait

[11:02] wait wait the last time i stepped on

[11:04] glass it was like a pile of all this

[11:06] glass so when i stepped i didn't really

[11:07] feel anything but you're asking me to

[11:08] walk on literal shards of glass yeah

[11:11] okay how do i do this without

[11:13] actually like cutting my foot well let

[11:15] me show you and i'm going to take one

[11:16] step put the ball of my foot down very

[11:18] gently move my weight okay step on the

[11:21] brown one ball and then drop your heel

[11:23] and then move your weight

[11:25] that's

[11:27] it take little baby steps good and then

[11:30] another little step there wow not as bad

[11:33] as i thought in order to do that you

[11:34] have to move so mindfully you have to

[11:36] actually like transfer the weight around

[11:38] but it can be done yes well i feel

[11:43] and now we have our final challenge the

[11:46] mountain this doesn't look yeah

[11:48] it's gonna take longer than we think

[11:54] there's this one thorn that's like stuck

[11:57] in the side and it every time i step it

[11:59] hurts you hiked the camino trail

[12:02] barefoot you must have had injuries and

[12:04] you must have hurt your feet well the

[12:06] thing is if you can fix it if you can

[12:08] get the prickle out put tape on it or

[12:11] you do that and then

[12:13] you just put one foot in front of the

[12:15] other and really

[12:17] really think about it as a sensation

[12:20] not as pain what do people not

[12:22] understand about what you're doing i

[12:25] think that people don't really

[12:26] understand how important it is for

[12:30] us to be healthy we have those sensory

[12:33] receptors 200 000 of them at least on

[12:36] the bottom of each foot that's fantastic

[12:39] now my feet and my brain we you know

[12:42] they talk to each other my whole body

[12:44] does

[12:49] [Music]

[13:01] i love climbing rocks

[13:03] me too

[13:04] i never thought as a grandma i'd be

[13:06] doing this i used to be a corporate gal

[13:09] i thought i'd be retired and playing

[13:10] golf and now i can't stand golf

[13:14] i'd rather climb rocks

[13:17] i want to be like you when i grow up too

[13:19] how are your feet my feet are

[13:23] sensational sensational

[13:26] yes

[13:27] good

[13:28] but i'm happy i'm grateful for the

[13:30] sensations so beautiful

[13:34] this is so worth it

[13:37] wow

[13:38] [Music]

[13:46] the mountains the sierras but look at

[13:48] those mountains with snow on them let's

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Walking barefoot activates the 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles in each foot, strengthening proprioception and balance. Scientific research shows that direct earth contact (earthing) reduces inflammation by allowing electrons to transfer from the earth to your body, neutralizing free radicals. After 12 years barefoot, Sue's feet show strengthened, resilient skin and heightened sensory awareness.
Yes, it is legal to drive barefoot and enter most public spaces barefoot in most jurisdictions. Sue has spent 12 years normalizing barefoot presence in stores, restaurants, and public spaces, encountering stares and laughter but persisting because she believes barefoot access is a fundamental choice and right.
Adaptation is gradual and individual. Feet begin to develop protective calluses and rebuild nerve sensitivity within weeks, but full rewilding—where proprioception, strength, and sensory awareness integrate—takes months to years. Sue's 12-year practice shows the long-term result: feet that are responsive, resilient, and deeply aware.
Earthing (grounding) is the practice of placing bare feet on earth—soil, grass, rock, or sand—which allows electrons to transfer from the earth to your body. This contact reduces inflammation, neutralizes free radicals, and has been documented to have anti-inflammatory effects in scientific research.
Yes, you can injure your feet on sharp objects like thorns or glass. In Barefoot Bootcamp, Sky's foot bleeds when he steps on prickly devil thorns. However, the practice involves learning to lift your feet mindfully, assess terrain, and respond to pain as information rather than punishment. Over time, thickened skin provides protection while maintaining sensitivity.
Both the Wim Hof Method and barefoot living train the nervous system to remain calm under stress, rebuild trust in the body's capabilities, and remove unnecessary layers of protection. Sue trained as a certified Wim Hof instructor in Poland and integrates cold exposure and breathwork with her barefoot practice.
Sue has walked the Camino in Spain 29 times, completing about 15 walks barefoot over 12 years. She describes it as a spiritual journey where "with each step I took forward I walked back to my authentic self." For her, barefoot walking on the Camino is a form of pilgrimage that reconnects her to inner wisdom and to the earth as the great mother.
Sue's key teaching is to avoid the word "pain" when describing barefoot sensations. Instead, reframe discomfort as sensation traveling from your feet to your brain. This linguistic shift reflects a neurological reality: when you stop labeling a sensation as painful, your nervous system processes it differently, allowing you to observe and learn from the sensation rather than resist it.
