After Burnout, an Engineer Built the Business She Dreamed Of

Laura is an engineer who spent ten years in a corporate job, then watched three rounds of layoffs pile the work of four people onto her desk while she raised her children alone. In a recording from the Cancun 10-Day Retreat in November 2025, she tells the story of what happened next: a weekend in Washington, a shift in what she was willing to want, a raise and a promotion offer that arrived the day after she felt the change, and, by her account, a construction company with twenty full-time employees and roughly ten part-timers within six months. Dr. Joe Dispenza, who responds to her in the same segment, uses her story to illustrate a moment he calls a choice point, the threshold where the pain of staying the same finally outweighs the fear of change. What follows explains the ideas inside her account, including the choice point, the gap between a goal and a vision, and the teaching that a thought comes before its proof, along with what the story does and does not establish.

What Does Burnout Look Like When Layoffs Keep Landing on One Person?

Laura's account is precise about the arithmetic, and the arithmetic is the story. She started with a corporate engineering job that was, in her words, "fine," the kind of work she was used to. Then the layoffs began. She kept her job each time, but each cut added a position's worth of work to her plate. Her forty-hour week became sixty. Then eighty to ninety. For the final nine months, she says, she worked 90 to 100 hours a week, carrying the load of four people while parenting alone.

What makes this more than a familiar story of overwork is the plan she had before it collapsed. She had started working toward a general contractor's license, aiming to run her own business. Each new layoff erased a little more of that plan. "So the plan of having my own business, there's no time for that," she recounts. "That's gone." The lesson she draws is not that hard work fails. It is that a person can be so consumed by survival that the future they were building simply stops being available to them.

Why Was Fear of Failure Keeping Her Stuck?

The most candid moment in the recording comes when Laura admits what she had been avoiding. She had the license plan, and she had the faith in the work that Dr. Joe Dispenza teaches. She did not pursue the plan with full energy, and she has had to name why.

"I didn't want to do the work to fix this issue cuz I was afraid that I would fail. And then I'd have to give up the faith and the love that I had in the work and I didn't want to face that. And it was easier just to not and stay stuck and have the hope." (Laura, Cancun 10-Day Retreat, November 2025, 1:29)

This is the core of the belief she uncovered. Failing at the business would mean the teaching she loved was not true for her. Staying stuck, by contrast, let her keep the hope intact. Dr. Joe Dispenza's commentary turns the story into a general question: discomfort is ongoing, and fear is also ongoing, so the real question is which one will become more intolerable first. Laura's answer, in the telling, was that she had reached her limit.

How Does a Desire Grow Into a Vision?

Laura's first step after the advanced follow-up weekend in Washington was small. The subject of that weekend was the abundance of life, and she says she wanted to donate to Inner Science, the organization whose work she loves. Her first figure was $25 a month, and she was calculating which subscription to cancel to afford it. The scarcity of that calculation was the frame she was operating in.

The shift came through meditation. Dr. Joe Dispenza's instruction, as she recounts it, was to get very clear about what you want and what it looks like. Her clarity expanded well beyond the bank balance she had been fixated on. "I knew I didn't want to work for anyone ever again, ever," she says. She also knew she wanted abundance that was "easy and fun," and she did not want to think about customer acquisition or where the money would come from.

Her logical mind pushed back, and she records that objection honestly: how could she run her own business without worrying about customers? The answer she received, as she tells it, was that if you can hold the thought, the frequency exists and you have only to find it. The vision that emerged was broader than security. It included a large donation to Inner Science, a team of employees she could pay well, and a company where people's families could be better off. She describes it in the words that anchor the piece:

"I've never wanted anything, been more excited about anything in my life." (Laura, Cancun 10-Day Retreat, November 2025, 3:20)

The distinction matters. Financial security is a goal that reduces a threat. A vision of meaningful work, of supporting others, and of building a place where people thrive is something you move toward. Laura's story suggests that the first kind of target can keep a person in survival mode, while the second kind organizes a different kind of action.

What Is a Choice Point, and How Did Laura Reach One?

Dr. Joe Dispenza's commentary frames Laura's experience as a choice point, and he states the question directly. "At what point is the pain of my discomfort going to outweigh my fear of failure?" (Dr. Joe Dispenza, Cancun 10-Day Retreat, November 2025, 9:20) He then reads her decision as the moment it happened. A choice point, in this reading, is not a dramatic event. It is the instant a person stops negotiating with their discomfort and says, in effect, that enough is enough.

He also describes why the pattern is so easy to miss in the early years. A capable, pleasant person is handed more work, and because they are reliable, the work keeps arriving. Each addition seems reasonable on its own. Only when the total becomes inhuman does the question of choice finally surface. Laura's account follows that arc exactly, from ninety-hour weeks to a weekend where she decided to change.

Did the Thought Come Before the Proof?

Laura's sequence is the most debated part of the story, and it is worth reading closely. In her telling, the change happened inside her first. The day after she returned home, she says she had a thought about contributing to charity, and she took the concrete step of setting up a recurring $100 monthly gift to Inner Science. Then, as she tells it, she noticed something she had not expected.

"I didn't check my bank account. I didn't reallocate money. And I am not worried or nervous." (Laura, Cancun 10-Day Retreat, November 2025, 4:18)

She describes the realization as a new reality, one in which she was a different person who felt no anxiety about money. Her reported next steps are where the story becomes most striking. The very next day, she says, her boss called to offer a raise and a promotion, which she had been asking for. The following day, a former manager from her old company called to offer her a position leading a technology department. The day after that, a friend called about a residential remodel designer who wanted to send clients directly to her, provided she had her general contractor's license, which she did.

"And then I was excited. I tell my best friend and I'm like, 'Oh, no, no, no. Let's see how many days. Like what's going to happen?'" (Laura, Cancun 10-Day Retreat, November 2025, 6:27)

Laura calls this momentum "proof and proof," with the proof, she says, being her own shift. Dr. Joe Dispenza's reading is consistent with the teaching that a thought held with conviction comes before its external evidence. It is worth being precise here: what the recording documents is Laura's report of the sequence, not an independent record of the calls, and it does not show that the thought caused the offers. The teaching is a framework for how she interprets what happened, and it is offered as such.

What Should a Careful Reader Take From This Story?

There are several things this recording establishes clearly. Laura worked punishing hours under real pressure, and her decision to stop surviving and start choosing is her own account of a turning point. Her description of the vision that emerged, from a stated desire to a broader purpose, is a useful model for anyone who has confused security with direction.

There are also things it does not establish. The company's revenue figures come from Laura's own statements. She says she made seven figures in revenue in six months and is set for eight figures by the end of her first full year, and she describes twenty full-time and about ten part-time employees. Those are her numbers, not audited ones, and the talk does not supply independent confirmation. Her story is a testimony of an experience, delivered at a retreat by a devoted student to a room of people who share the framework. Read it as that. The question it leaves a reader with is the one Dr. Joe Dispenza poses: where is your own point of pain, and what would it take for it to outweigh your fear?

Where to go from here

If Laura's story resonates, start with the question she was answering. Write down the work you are doing that you no longer want to do, and note how many additional responsibilities have been added to it since you began. Then make a plain list of what you are protecting by staying where you are, the way Laura named the fear of losing her faith in the work. Notice which fear feels heavier, and whether you have reached the point Dr. Joe Dispenza calls a choice point. For further reading on the framework, look for the other retreat recordings Dr. Joe Dispenza has published, and compare Laura's account against your own before deciding what your next move is.

[0:00] I am a single parent. I'm missing out on

[0:02] my kids life and it it was horrible and

[0:05] I was so stuck. I was so so stuck.

[0:11] For 10 years, I worked a corporate

[0:13] position as an engineer.

[0:16] It was fine. Um it was what I was used

[0:18] to. And all of a sudden there was

[0:21] layoffs which happened. I was lucky I

[0:23] kept my job, but a second position worth

[0:26] of work was suddenly put on top of me.

[0:29] So my 40 hours turned into 60.

[0:33] And that was too much. I I didn't like

[0:36] it. So it was like, I want to do

[0:37] something different and I started to

[0:39] work on getting a general contractor's

[0:41] license. So I had a plan.

[0:43] And then another layoff happened.

[0:46] Lucky, I got to keep my job, but guess

[0:48] what?

[0:49] Another positions worth of work fell on

[0:52] top of me.

[0:54] And I was up to 80 to 90 hours of work.

[0:57] So the plan of having my own business,

[1:01] there's no time for that. That's not

[1:02] even it's gone. That's gone.

[1:05] And then another layoff happened.

[1:07] And I had four people's worth of work on

[1:10] top of me. And for 9 months,

[1:13] the last 9 months of my job there, I

[1:15] worked 90 to 100 hours a week.

[1:20] I love Dr. Joe and Dr. Joe's work and

[1:23] it's so important to me

[1:25] that

[1:26] >> [clears throat]

[1:26] >> and I

[1:27] it's hard to say this. I I didn't want

[1:29] to do the work to to fix this issue cuz

[1:32] I was afraid that I would fail.

[1:35] And then I'd have to give up the faith

[1:37] and the love that I had in the work and

[1:39] I didn't want to face that. And it was

[1:41] easier just to not

[1:42] and stay [snorts] stuck and have the

[1:44] hope.

[1:45] Um but then I went to the Washington AFU

[1:48] and surprisingly

[1:50] >> [laughter]

[1:50] >> the subject was abundance of life.

[1:55] I love Inner Science. I'm a

[1:57] science-minded person at heart and I

[1:59] really really wanted to donate. And so I

[2:02] was like, okay, maybe I can do $25

[2:08] a this is just to help you know where I

[2:09] was financially.

[2:11] I'm like okay, what do I have to switch?

[2:14] What do I have to reallocate? Let me ask

[2:15] my kid if he wants to give up a

[2:17] streaming service. Like how can I make

[2:19] this happen? That was the person of lack

[2:22] that started, you know, at the AFU. And

[2:24] so

[2:25] we I start doing the work, doing the

[2:29] meditations and Dr. Joe says get really

[2:32] clear on what you want and what it looks

[2:34] like.

[2:36] And I knew I didn't want to work for

[2:39] anyone ever again, ever. I knew I wanted

[2:42] abundance in a way that was easy and

[2:44] fun.

[2:46] And I knew I didn't want to ever have to

[2:50] think about customer acquisition or

[2:52] having the stress of like how do I get

[2:53] the money to come in?

[2:56] And then my logical mind was like, how

[2:58] are you going to have your own business

[3:00] and not worry about customers? But Dr.

[3:03] Joe said, if you have the thought then

[3:05] the frequency exist and you just got to

[3:07] find it.

[3:10] We're doing the meditations and doing

[3:12] the meditations and I'm really focused

[3:14] on getting this money so I can get out

[3:16] of struggle and that's that's where I

[3:17] was but through the meditations and

[3:20] opening my heart, all of a sudden

[3:23] all I cared about was being able to

[3:25] donate huge amounts of money to

[3:28] InnerScience and having a huge team of

[3:32] employees where I could give them a

[3:33] great wage and have happiness and they

[3:36] would love work and maybe I could have

[3:38] royalty programs. I don't know. Like it

[3:41] I there are no words to explain the

[3:44] excitement and passion that I had for

[3:46] this idea. I've never wanted anything,

[3:49] been more excited about anything in my

[3:51] life. I just I like, I could have

[3:53] employees, they could, you know, love

[3:55] working for me, they could their

[3:56] families could be better. Like it just

[3:58] it kept going and going and and I that's

[4:00] all I wanted. That's all I wanted. And

[4:04] um I had a great event.

[4:07] Then I come home

[4:09] and right away, the first day, I hear

[4:12] the voice that was like,

[4:14] "You can contribute to charity now." And

[4:16] I was like, "Oh yeah, I could totally

[4:18] Yeah, yeah, yeah." So I go to Inner

[4:19] Science and I was like, "Oh, let's do

[4:21] $100 recurring every month." Check, felt

[4:24] great. I was like, "That was fun. Okay."

[4:26] And then all of a sudden, I was like,

[4:27] "Wait a minute.

[4:29] I didn't check my bank account.

[4:31] I didn't reallocate money.

[4:33] And I am not worried or nervous." And I

[4:36] was like, "Oh my gosh. I shift I

[4:37] shifted. Like I did it. I did it. I did

[4:39] it." And I knew I knew to every ounce of

[4:43] my being that I was in a new reality. I

[4:46] was a new person. And I was really

[4:49] really excited because

[4:51] the person I was didn't have any worry

[4:54] or anxiety about money. So And

[4:57] just from the work and and it's tuning

[4:59] in.

[5:00] And so then the very next day,

[5:02] I get a phone call from my boss

[5:05] who is offering me a raise and a

[5:09] promotion

[5:10] which I had been begging for before.

[5:12] Like something's got to happen.

[5:14] And

[5:16] I will tell you in my head, I was like,

[5:18] "You are talking to the wrong girl."

[5:20] >> [laughter]

[5:23] >> Like no way. And then I got off that

[5:26] phone call and I was like, "Oh my gosh."

[5:29] >> [laughter]

[5:29] >> I really just did that and it feels so

[5:32] good. And then like I just got the

[5:33] chills thinking about it. The momentum

[5:36] that was building up cuz I just had

[5:38] proof and proof. And the proof was

[5:40] really just me, but it

[5:42] it was amazing. So then, the very next

[5:45] day, I get another phone call. From an

[5:48] another ex-manager from the same

[5:50] business. He's working in another

[5:52] company asking me to head this whole

[5:54] tech part department. Even it's better.

[5:56] It's better.

[5:58] And again, I was like, "Oh, no, no, I

[6:00] see the game now."

[6:01] >> [laughter]

[6:04] >> No. No. And then I was excited. I tell

[6:07] my best friend and I'm like, "Oh, no,

[6:08] no, no. Let's see how many days. Like

[6:10] what's going to happen?"

[6:12] >> [laughter]

[6:13] >> And so then the next day

[6:17] >> [laughter]

[6:18] >> I get a phone call from a friend and he

[6:20] said,

[6:22] "You still have your general contractor

[6:23] license, right?" And I was like, "Yeah.

[6:25] I mean, yeah, I have it." And he's like,

[6:27] "Well, I've got this designer, this

[6:29] residential remodel designer, who wants

[6:31] to funnel clients right to you. Would

[6:35] you Do you want to Do you want that?"

[6:36] And I was like,

[6:38] "Yes. Yes.

[6:39] Yes, I want that. That is what I want."

[6:42] And so then, you know, I started to

[6:44] think like, you know, does she need to

[6:46] meet me? What do we need to do? He's

[6:47] like, "She wants you to start tomorrow.

[6:49] I told her you're great." Like And I'm

[6:51] like, "Oh, that's easy. That is That is

[6:53] easy."

[6:55] >> [laughter]

[6:56] >> So okay. So I quit my job and I start my

[6:59] construction company.

[7:01] And I'm not going to go into the details

[7:03] on how easy everything was, but just

[7:05] believe me, super, super easy. All the

[7:07] obstacles I could have made weren't

[7:08] there.

[7:09] And it's been 6 months.

[7:12] And

[7:13] for one, like [snorts] I said, easy,

[7:14] fun. Everyone's laughing. And I in the 6

[7:19] months, I will have made in seven

[7:22] figures in revenue, set for eight

[7:24] figures in after end of the year or not

[7:26] the end of the year, but of my first

[7:27] full year.

[7:28] Which is amazing.

[7:39] But the really, really cool part is I

[7:42] have 20 full-time employees, about 10

[7:45] part-time, and they love working for me.

[7:48] We have tons of fun. They make great

[7:49] wages, and it's just going to grow. So.

[7:58] >> [cheering and applause]

[8:04] [applause]

[8:04] >> Yeah, is she

[8:07] is she the example of truth?

[8:10] >> [cheering]

[8:11] >> She's a light to the audience right now

[8:13] because she's speaking the truth. Now,

[8:15] think about this.

[8:17] Engineer working in a corporation,

[8:20] nice person, intelligent, balanced, you

[8:25] know, the person you're just going to

[8:26] give stuff to. They're not going to

[8:28] complain. Here, take another one. Take

[8:30] another. And then all of a sudden it

[8:31] gets to a point where it's almost

[8:34] inhuman

[8:35] to to have somebody take the work on of

[8:38] four people. That was her choice point.

[8:42] This is no longer loving to me.

[8:44] All right, at 60 hours, you know, she

[8:46] gets her contractor's license thinking

[8:48] there's another possibility, but what it

[8:50] what what happens next?

[8:53] She gets more people that were laid off,

[8:55] and she doesn't even have the time.

[8:57] Doesn't even have the time really to to

[9:00] even go in that direction. She's

[9:01] overwhelmed. She's bombarded.

[9:04] She's doing the work, but but she Did

[9:07] you hear what her belief

[9:10] that she uncovered?

[9:12] I I don't want to fail because then this

[9:14] would won't be the truth for me.

[9:16] And I don't I don't want to I'd rather

[9:17] stay here than take the risk.

[9:20] My What At what point is the pain of my

[9:24] discomfort

[9:25] going to outweigh my fear of failure?

[9:29] And she reached that choice point, and

[9:31] she said, "Okay, enough."

[9:34] She comes to the

[9:36] advanced

[9:38] follow-up weekend, and it's the

[9:39] abundance of life and it is an immersive

[9:43] 3 and 1/2 day event all about

[9:46] abundance, the personality of abundance,

[9:48] tuning into abundance, 5D creation, 3D

[9:51] creation, mission,

[9:53] goals, getting clear on what your

[9:56] definition of abundance is. She's got

[9:58] nothing to lose.

[10:01] She goes all in. She immerses herself

[10:03] into it. It makes sense to her makes

[10:05] sense to her. She loves the science. She

[10:07] shows up for all the meditations and in

[10:10] four days

[10:12] in four days she transforms from the old

[10:16] personality to the new personality.

[10:19] In the personality of lack, $25 would

[10:21] mean then that her desire to contribute

[10:24] would mean she'd have to take something

[10:26] from the child that she loves.

[10:28] But her sincere desire to do it is real.

[10:32] It's authentic.

[10:34] And then going to that point where a

[10:37] person is no longer respected

[10:40] for their time and their energy and

[10:42] their work,

[10:44] the the lack of having that starts

[10:47] causing her to dream about

[10:50] "Man, if I have my own company, I'm

[10:53] going to take care of my people. I'm

[10:54] going to make sure they love their job.

[10:56] I'm going to pay them well. I'm going to

[10:58] I'm going to make it of their families

[11:00] and and profit sharing and all that

[11:02] stuff."

[11:05] Is this a vision? Is this a mission?

[11:08] It's no longer about the money any

[11:10] longer or the lack of having it. She's

[11:12] got a vision that's bigger than that.

[11:14] That's her mission now. And now her

[11:16] goals on that mission is not difficult

[11:19] for her.

[11:20] Now, check it out.

[11:21] She comes back. She's a different

[11:23] person. She feels differently. She's

[11:25] thinking differently. She's certainly

[11:27] acting differently.

[11:29] She's coming back to her life. Coming

[11:31] back to this illusion of

[11:33] three-dimensional reality, here she is

[11:35] immersing herself for 3 weeks in

[11:37] creating a new reality.

[11:39] Tuning in from 5D,

[11:41] getting really clear.

[11:45] Work for myself. I don't want to have to

[11:48] go out and sell anything. It's I don't

[11:50] have the time. I'm a single parent.

[11:53] >> [clears throat]

[11:54] >> Make the money that I need, the whole

[11:55] bit.

[11:56] Make a difference, you know, have the

[11:57] right type of team.

[11:59] She got very clear on all those things.

[12:01] That was her intention.

[12:03] Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. And all of

[12:05] a sudden, she comes back and the first

[12:07] thing, she feels so good, her heart so

[12:08] open, what does she want to do?

[12:10] Give. Like, I'm going to give $100.

[12:13] Didn't even think about it. Engineer,

[12:14] didn't think about it.

[12:17] Just did it, right? And she said she

[12:18] becomes aware, like, "But now,

[12:20] >> [laughter]

[12:20] >> I'm in the unknown." Like, "Okay."

[12:23] Then what happens next?

[12:26] What happens next?

[12:28] The experiences start coming

[12:31] to her. She's drawing experiences. She's

[12:34] not going out and

[12:36] uh job interviews. They're coming to

[12:38] her. First one comes, it's a fastball.

[12:41] It's a little bit outside the strike

[12:42] zone.

[12:43] I'm not swinging at that one.

[12:46] That's not what I want. I'm I know that

[12:49] that's abundance, a little more

[12:50] abundance, but that's not my dream. I'm

[12:52] very clear that's not my dream. Now,

[12:55] some people would have taken that, yes?

[12:57] Cuz it would have it would have given

[12:58] them the relief, but it wouldn't have

[13:00] changed their life.

[13:02] Then she says, "Nope."

[13:04] The very next day, here comes the next

[13:07] one.

[13:08] Better job,

[13:10] different boss, little higher pay.

[13:15] I want to work for myself.

[13:17] Not swinging at that

[13:19] hanging curveball, either.

[13:22] The very next day,

[13:25] out of

[13:29] Something appeared out of

[13:33] Nothing. And it happened in

[13:37] No time.

[13:39] And here it comes. Now, listen.

[13:42] Work for yourself. Just nothing. It

[13:45] could be easy.

[13:47] No need

[13:49] to go out and get clients. They're

[13:52] funneling

[13:55] to me.

[13:57] To me.

[13:58] Are you getting this?

[14:00] All right. 6 months.

[14:03] Easy, fun,

[14:05] dreaming, profit sharing, 6 months,

[14:09] seven figures.

[14:11] 1 year,

[14:13] eight figures.

[14:15] An abundant life right there.

[14:18] >> [applause]

[14:22] [cheering]

[14:23] [applause]

Frequently Asked Questions

In the Cancun 10-Day Retreat recording, Dr. Joe Dispenza describes a choice point as the moment when the pain of staying the same outweighs the fear of change. He poses it as a question: at what point is the pain of my discomfort going to outweigh my fear of failure? He uses Laura's story to show what that threshold looks like in practice.
Laura had been working toward a general contractor's license before layoffs swallowed her time. Shortly after returning from the retreat, a friend told her a residential remodel designer wanted to send clients directly to her, and she left her engineering job to start the company. She says the business has grown to twenty full-time and about ten part-time employees within six months.
Laura reports that her boss offered a raise and promotion the day after she felt a shift, followed by a job offer from a former manager and then the designer referral over the next few days. These are her own account from the recording, and the talk does not provide independent documentation of the calls. Dr. Joe Dispenza frames the sequence as proof that follows a shift in thought.
Laura says she was afraid that if she tried and failed, she would have to give up the faith and love she had in the work, so staying stuck felt safer. She describes this as the belief she uncovered during the retreat. Naming the fear underneath the inaction is what let her reconsider her choices.
Laura's first goal was financial security, which she describes as getting out of struggle. Through meditation, her picture expanded to include meaningful work, supporting others, and building a company where people could thrive. The talk suggests that a vision organizes action in a way that a goal focused on escaping a threat often does not.
This recording presents meditation as the setting where Laura clarified her desires and let go of scarcity thinking, and she credits that clarity for the changes that followed. It is one person's testimony delivered at a retreat, not a controlled study. Readers should treat it as a framework for reflection rather than a guarantee of outcomes.
