A Reluctant Yoga Teacher's Path to Studio Ownership

DTO

Some origin stories begin with a bang. Janette's begins with a desk she didn't want, a friend's parents trying to help during a hard season, and a woman in an office who suggested, almost offhandedly, that she sign up for yoga teacher training. In a recent episode of DTO's 5Q interview podcast, recorded while the host was at his wellness retreat in Costa Rica, Janette, founder of The Yoga Barre in Florida, walked through how she went from occasional student to studio owner, and why the path was never the one she expected. The conversation also gives a window into a larger idea the host keeps returning to: that every teacher, musician, and builder of sacred space arrives by a different road, and that those roads converge in the places people go to feel some peace.

How Does a Yoga Teacher Origin Story Actually Start?

The episode opens in a rather unglamorous place. Before yoga became anything more than a stretch on a free afternoon, Janette had practiced here and there: YMCA yoga, a crunch class, a session whenever her schedule allowed. She spent a long stretch working in retail, a world, she noted, where a manager barely has time for anything else. Then came a divorce, and a temporary job arranged through a friend's parents while she figured out what came next.

That job put her at an office desk, which she was candid about not being built for. "I'm a people person, but I'm not like a sit in an office type of gal," she said. It was in that office that a woman who ran a local yoga school came through, and the two began talking about life. The woman knew what Janette was going through, and her suggestion landed as a shock. "She was like, 'You should do yoga teacher training.' And I was like, 'What?'"

The school in question was in Bradenton, Florida, and the program was a 200-hour training. Janette was raising two small children, somewhere between three and five years old by her own rough count, and she worked out a way to attend. She was not, at that point, looking for a teaching career. "I'd never thought that I wanted to be an instructor," she said, "but it just um I just kept going."

Why Did the Training Feel Like Therapy?

What kept her coming back was not the postures alone. She describes the training as encompassing much more than the physical practice: the philosophy behind the work, the reasons behind each pose, the sense that the mat was a place to sort through what was happening off it. "It was like therapy for me," she said, "with everything that I was going through."

That detail matters, because it reframes the usual story about why people enter yoga teaching. Often the assumption is that someone decides to teach because they've mastered something. Janette's account is closer to the reverse. She was being held by the practice first, and the teaching came as a consequence of wanting to share what had helped her. "The way that it made me feel was like indescribable," she said, "and you just want to keep going, share it with everyone and learn as much as you can."

What Happens When You Want to Quit?

This is the part of the story that many aspiring teachers will recognize. Right before she was due to finish the 200-hour program, Janette stepped away. She isn't entirely sure of the reason in hindsight. She thinks she got nervous, that the prospect of suddenly being a teacher felt like something she wasn't ready for, and that she could not see herself completing it. She stopped.

She did not stop for good. About a year later, she enrolled in another 200-hour training. The gap is a useful reminder that a stalled commitment is not always a verdict. Sometimes it's a pause that lets a person return with more clarity about why they started.

The episode also sits alongside a moment of clarity Janette describes later in the conversation, an "aha" that the host picks up on as the turning point. The details of that moment are the kind of thing a listener should hear in her own voice, so it is worth seeking out the full recording rather than reconstructing it here.

What Is the Host's Theory About Sacred Spaces?

The conversation is structured as a 5Q interview, and the host, DTO, who records as DTO Dave the Organism, frames it through his own philosophy. He has a theory, he says, that "no matter what our origin story is of how we got into this sacred practice from mother India there is this connectivity." Whether you are "the teacher, the student, the yogi musician," or even the people laying down the flooring for a new location, he argues, there is an energy that goes into creating spaces where people can feel peace.

That idea has a practical edge in DTO's own story. He is building a 2,000-foot yoga shala at Embody Costa Rica, a wellness and retreat center he and his partner began in 2020, while much of the world was, as he put it, fighting over toilet paper or learning to bake sourdough. He is also a recording artist, known for his debut album, which he launched in 2016 and says was endorsed by Deepak Chopra, and for a follow-up record organized around the seven chakras. His studio sits beneath the retreat space, and he describes it as "the ultimate man cave," a place to play and be self-expressed.

The point of tying these threads together is the spine of the episode. A yoga studio, a retreat center, a recording room: each one is a container for the same thing. Sound, movement, and presence become places where people can slow down. DTO makes the connection explicitly, noting that Janette's studio includes aerial yoga and sound healing alongside its physical classes, and asking what else could be brought into that space. "We're in the sandbox, right?" he says.

Why Does a Physical Space Still Matter?

DTO raises an observation that should resonate with anyone who has tried to build a community in person. Physical locations, he suggests, do something online platforms cannot. "Build it and they will come," he says, a phrase he uses to describe the way a real room draws the right people into it. Janette's own experience backs this up: she has built a studio and is preparing a second one, a sign that the community she gathered around her has become something solid enough to expand.

The episode was also a reminder that the logistics of tours and collaborations often arrive through people. DTO credits Carla Holland, who connected the two of them and acts as his ambassador and tour manager, as "such a connector." The chain of introductions is part of the story: Janette's path ran through a friend's parents, a woman in an office, and a yoga school, and her collaboration with DTO ran through a connector who simply knew they should meet.

What Can Listeners Take Away from This Episode?

Three ideas stand out. The first is that a teacher's origin often begins in personal need rather than in mastery. Janette came to yoga during a divorce and found therapy there before she ever imagined leading a class. The second is that wanting to quit is not the same as being done. Her return to training a year later suggests that hesitation can be information, not a verdict. The third is the host's broader claim that the people who build sacred spaces, from the teacher to the person laying the floor, are part of one continuous energy.

For a reader drawn to yoga, music, or community-building, the episode offers a model of how to begin without a plan. You don't need to know you'll teach. You need to keep showing up, notice what the practice is doing for you, and be willing to take the next step, even if it arrives sideways.

Where to go from here

If this story resonated, the full DTO 5Q interview with Janette is worth hearing in full, especially for the details of her training, her return to it, and the moment of clarity that shaped her next steps. The conversation also covers DTO's own path from his 2016 debut album to the retreat he is building in Costa Rica. Listeners in the St. Petersburg area can note that DTO has scheduled a tour stop at The Yoga Barre on September 26, from 7 to 9 p.m., and that the host is planning to explore Tampa and the surrounding region during that trip. Start with the episode, then pay attention to the spaces in your own life that already hold this kind of peace.

[0:02] Hello sweet souls. It's DTO in the flow.

[0:05] This is my 5Q interview podcast where I

[0:09] connect with visionary leaders in the

[0:11] world, healers and super cool people.

[0:15] And today I have an extraordinary guest

[0:18] and I am going to be on tour in

[0:21] September and I get to play at the yoga

[0:23] bar and this will be September 26th at 7

[0:27] to 900 p.m. And it is such an honor and

[0:31] pleasure because this will be my very

[0:33] first time on tour in that region of

[0:37] Florida. I'll be flying in the Tampa,

[0:39] going to St. Petersburg and exploring

[0:41] the surrounding areas. So, if you're in

[0:44] Florida in September, I can't wait to

[0:46] invite you. And right now, I am not in

[0:49] Florida. I am at Embody Costa Rica. This

[0:51] is our wellness and retreat center. So,

[0:54] once upon a time in 2020, Himalay and I

[0:57] moved to Costa Rica and we chose to have

[1:00] this wild vision, which is to build a

[1:03] 2,000 foot y yoga shala. And you can see

[1:06] how immense it is. So, while other

[1:09] people were fighting over toilet paper

[1:10] during the pandemic or learning how to

[1:12] make sourdough bread, we were building a

[1:14] full-blown retreat center. And it was a

[1:16] massive undertaking and it's still in

[1:18] progress and it's still happening in so

[1:21] many beautiful ways. And if you haven't

[1:23] met me yet, I'm DTO Dave the Organism.

[1:26] It's my recording artist name. I came on

[1:28] the scene when I launched my debut album

[1:31] in 2016. It got endorsed by Deepo Chopra

[1:34] that went on to become an award-winning

[1:35] producer. My sophomore album goes

[1:37] through the seven songs for seven

[1:39] chakras. So if anyone's in the global

[1:41] yoga world, I'm sure you've heard my

[1:42] music. And if not, then I encourage you

[1:44] to add it to your playlists. And I want

[1:47] to make sure everyone can present to I

[1:49] am because you can stream my music

[1:51] anywhere, anytime. And I appreciate

[1:55] everyone supporting

[1:57] practices that really support the

[1:59] practice of yoga. And for me, all those

[2:02] years scales and practicing piano. Big

[2:05] shout out to my mom for supporting my

[2:07] musical path. Uh it really has evolved

[2:10] into this place where I get to meet

[2:12] incredible souls like Janette that has a

[2:15] yoga studio and soon to have a second

[2:17] studio. And let's bring on Janette.

[2:20] Thanks for being here today. How are

[2:22] you?

[2:22] >> Hi. I'm great. How are you?

[2:24] >> So good. And want to acknowledge Carla

[2:27] Holland who is the person that connected

[2:31] us. She's such a connector.

[2:33] >> I haven't met her in person yet. She

[2:34] just called me and uh told me all about

[2:37] you and

[2:38] >> yes,

[2:39] >> super excited to connect

[2:41] >> equally. Yeah, she's my ambassador.

[2:42] She's like my tour manager and uh it's

[2:45] so fun because she's like, "We're going

[2:46] to get you in the St. Petersburg region

[2:48] of Florida and you're going to do Yeah.

[2:51] And I was like, "Okay, let's make it

[2:53] happen." Because, you know, I was going

[2:54] to do a New England state tour. Um and

[2:56] then might as well before I come back

[2:58] down to Costa Rica. So, it all is in

[3:00] flow. And that's what I have this theory

[3:02] about like no matter what our origin

[3:05] story is of how we got into this sacred

[3:06] practice from mother India there is this

[3:10] connectivity there's this way that

[3:12] whatever your role is your zone of

[3:14] genius

[3:16] it all just intertwines into let's

[3:18] cocreate energies whether you're the

[3:21] teacher whether you're the student

[3:22] whether you're the yogi musician uh even

[3:26] if the people that are laying down the

[3:27] flooring for your new location like

[3:29] there's this energy that goes into

[3:31] creating sacred spaces in the world and

[3:35] especially places where you can feel

[3:36] peace and when more than ever do we

[3:40] desire and require peace.

[3:43] >> Yeah.

[3:43] >> So, I appreciate and I want to

[3:45] acknowledge you for taking that path

[3:46] because I know there's probably lots of

[3:49] ups and downs and challenges. You know,

[3:50] as you can see from the photos, we built

[3:53] an entire recording studio and uh

[3:56] recording in a studio for yoga. But

[3:58] underneath here is my recording studio.

[4:00] So, I do want to make sure that everyone

[4:01] can see my recording studio because a

[4:03] lot of people including Carla has come

[4:05] and uh recorded guided meditations.

[4:07] Let's show everyone a peak of that.

[4:10] [Applause]

[4:12] [Music]

[4:27] So fun.

[4:29] >> Everything that you love in one space.

[4:32] >> Exactly. Yeah. This is the ultimate man

[4:34] cave.

[4:36] I get to play and just Yeah. be

[4:38] self-expressed. And so, and it's great

[4:41] because where our retreat center is

[4:42] located, I'm only 25 kilometers to the

[4:44] international airport of San Jose, Costa

[4:46] Rica, which means it's so easy to come

[4:48] in and out and for me to, you know,

[4:50] welcome people that want to come and

[4:51] record or host retreats and do all of

[4:54] that. So, you know what it's like to

[4:56] have a physical location. This why I

[4:57] love having conversation with fellow

[4:59] business owners because, you know, build

[5:01] it and they will come. And before

[5:04] >> right before that took place, I do want

[5:06] to tie in the fact that you have this

[5:09] incredible

[5:11] yoga bar, right? And so this is a studio

[5:14] physical location that people come to.

[5:16] You can see the community that you've

[5:18] built and location. You have aerial yoga

[5:21] and all that you offer with the sound

[5:23] healing, all the fun, you know, gloa as

[5:27] I like to call it.

[5:29] >> It's like what else can you do with

[5:31] this? What else can we bring in here?

[5:34] >> We're in the sandbox, right?

[5:35] >> Yeah.

[5:37] Healing, cool, you know.

[5:40] >> Absolutely.

[5:40] >> We love it all.

[5:42] >> Absolutely. So, every superhero has an

[5:45] origin story. So, this is what my first

[5:46] question is. Boom. For you.

[5:49] >> What is the origin story?

[5:51] >> Exactly. I know you're doing it. Super

[5:53] mom,

[5:54] >> super community member. So at one point

[5:56] you didn't know about the practice of

[5:58] yoga and then you of course found what

[6:04] this practice is. So what is the origin

[6:06] story? How did you find yoga or better

[6:08] said how did yoga find you?

[6:09] >> Exactly. I was just going to say that.

[6:11] Um I had practiced um like throughout my

[6:15] life I did you know like YMCA yoga and

[6:20] um crunch and here and there and just

[6:22] kind of took a class when I could. Um

[6:26] but I worked in retail for a super long

[6:29] time. So anyone that is a manager in

[6:32] retail knows that you don't really have

[6:34] time to do anything else really. Um, so

[6:38] after a long stint in retail, um, I kind

[6:41] of was going through a little messy

[6:43] divorce and I found myself, uh, one of

[6:46] my friends parents hooked me up with a

[6:48] job while I could figure out like what I

[6:50] wanted to do. So, I was sitting at an

[6:53] office desk, which is so not me, and um,

[6:56] doing like the computer thing, which is

[6:58] not me, you know, phones. I'm a people

[7:01] person, but I'm not like a sit in an

[7:03] office type of gal. And um this lady

[7:06] walked in to the office one day and we

[7:09] were just chatting and she was like,

[7:11] "You should do yoga teacher training."

[7:13] And I was like, "What?" And she's like,

[7:15] "Yeah." Um just cuz we were like talking

[7:17] a little bit about life and she knew

[7:19] like some things that I was going

[7:20] through and I was like, "How does that

[7:22] have to do with, you know, yoga?" And so

[7:25] she was the owner of um a yoga school

[7:28] locally that a lot of us around here

[7:30] went to Hartwood in Bradenton, Florida.

[7:33] and um I was just like hm kind of

[7:35] sparked an interest. So um I was able to

[7:39] start a 200hour training over at her

[7:42] place and little did I know you know how

[7:46] much it encompassed besides just the

[7:48] physical postures and it was like

[7:51] therapy for me um with everything that I

[7:54] was going through. I had two small

[7:55] children. I think they were maybe

[7:59] two and four at the time, three and

[8:02] five. Um, so I just uh worked it out to

[8:07] where I could get that teacher training.

[8:09] I'd never thought that I wanted to be an

[8:12] instructor, but it just um I just kept

[8:16] going and kept uh going through the

[8:17] motions, learning about, you know, the

[8:20] philosophy behind everything, learning

[8:21] all the postures. And we would always

[8:24] practice, of course, like every time um

[8:26] we went there. And the way that it made

[8:28] me feel was like indescribable and you

[8:33] just want to like keep going, share it

[8:35] with everyone and learn as much as you

[8:37] can. So, um so that's what I did. Um I

[8:41] didn't know I was going to teach, but um

[8:45] right before I was supposed to get the

[8:47] 200,

[8:48] um I like bowed out. I don't even quite

[8:52] remember if I just like got nervous like

[8:54] oh my gosh like now I'm supposed to

[8:56] start teaching like I'm not ready oh my

[8:57] gosh I can't finish. So I stopped and um

[9:03] but I think I joined up the next 200 um

[9:07] about a year later because I was like

[9:09] even though I could have finished you

[9:11] know I was like I have to do the whole

[9:12] way through again you know relearn

[9:14] everything and just like make sure that

[9:16] I'm super ready if I'm going to do this.

[9:19] So, um, I did the 200 again and, um,

[9:23] loved it, loved it, loved it. And I

[9:25] ripped off the band-aid and, uh, my

[9:27] first job was at Burn Boot Camp. Um,

[9:30] it's a franchise, so they're all over

[9:32] the place. And they don't do yoga, but

[9:35] they do a lot of fitness and stuff. And,

[9:38] um, they said, "We want, you know, the

[9:40] ladies who come and whoever comes to

[9:42] like have a nice little stretch and, you

[9:44] know, maybe like a Sunday morning

[9:45] sunrise situation." And I was like,

[9:47] "Okay.

[9:49] So that was my first gig. Um I did that.

[9:52] I loved it. I uh you know wrote

[9:55] everything down and my plan and

[9:57] everything that I was going to do. But

[10:00] uh for me that soon went out the window

[10:03] because when I'm practicing yoga, you

[10:06] have to feel like that's the most

[10:10] important thing to me is how you feel

[10:12] while you're teaching, how you're making

[10:15] other people feel on the mat. Um, and I

[10:19] just wanted everyone to feel like that

[10:21] peace, that calm, that strength, that

[10:24] balance, everything that it gave me. Um,

[10:29] so ripped off the band-aid, did burn

[10:32] boot camp, and then I started going,

[10:34] "Oh, I can't make money just like, you

[10:36] know, this one day a week. Got to quit

[10:38] the other job and just keep doing yoga."

[10:41] So then I started scooping up everything

[10:43] I could. I worked at Crunch Fitness and

[10:46] there's about four locations around

[10:48] here. So, I would teach yoga, you know,

[10:51] in Sarasota. I jumped to Bradenton um

[10:54] all the different locations and um

[10:58] another gym too, around the clock

[10:59] fitness. I started teaching there. So,

[11:01] just scooping up as many as I could. But

[11:04] um what was cool is if they have child

[11:06] care, you can bring your kids and they

[11:08] can hang and do homework and all that

[11:10] stuff. Here's a great photo.

[11:12] >> Yeah, there's no babies.

[11:15] >> Once upon a time,

[11:18] >> I love how you sent me all these

[11:19] different um pictures of you getting

[11:21] certification because now the context is

[11:23] totally clear because it was, as you

[11:26] said, you were on the wagon, you got off

[11:28] the wagon, and it's like, okay, I'm

[11:30] doing this.

[11:30] >> Yeah, I love that.

[11:31] >> You just want more, more, more, right?

[11:34] >> Of course. And I so this leads into um

[11:37] you know the path of the teacher is my

[11:38] second question because when you are in

[11:41] that space of okay the origin is I

[11:45] receive this magical energy which I you

[11:48] know I know you didn't use that word but

[11:50] it feels like you were going through

[11:51] this stage of your life where it's like

[11:52] whoa okay this is something I can it's

[11:55] nectar right like this is supporting me

[11:57] moving through these phases and chapters

[11:59] of my life you know and yoga can just

[12:01] bring this inner peace

[12:03] >> and connectivity not only to yourself,

[12:04] but as you know, a community. And so

[12:07] when you chose the path of becoming the

[12:10] teacher, here's some great images.

[12:13] There's another one. And so what was how

[12:16] has that been for you? And in general,

[12:20] what have you learned about yourself by

[12:23] stepping up and becoming a teacher?

[12:26] >> So even though I'm a teacher,

[12:30] I am forever a student.

[12:33] Um, and everyone that I meet, every

[12:36] class that I take, you get something,

[12:40] you know, some piece of wisdom,

[12:42] um, some words, you know, some people

[12:46] become your muse. Um, but I,

[12:50] it's so funny to even call myself a

[12:52] teacher still because there's so many

[12:54] people like that know so much that I'm

[12:57] always like, "Oh my gosh, like wow." You

[13:00] know, I don't claim just because I own a

[13:02] studio to like be the queen of yoga

[13:05] world. You know what I mean? Most of my

[13:07] instructors know a lot more than me

[13:10] about breath work and um they all have

[13:12] different fun certifications and so much

[13:16] knowledge. Um I just want to keep

[13:19] learning and I feel like yoga is life.

[13:22] Um you know, off of the mat sometimes

[13:26] more than it is on your mat. you're kind

[13:29] of learning how to navigate while you're

[13:31] on your mat, how to navigate life. Um,

[13:34] and there's so many teachers along the

[13:36] way. Um, and students, like I mean, um,

[13:40] you know, everybody that you meet, just

[13:42] like you said, everybody, you know, is

[13:44] intertwined, everybody is connected. We

[13:46] all meet everybody and, you know, you

[13:49] get your takeaways from them, your

[13:51] wisdom from them. Sometimes it's good,

[13:54] sometimes not so good. But, you know,

[13:57] we're all connected. We're all learning

[13:59] lessons. We're all growing together. And

[14:02] um and love always comes to mind, too.

[14:06] You know, just spreading the love,

[14:09] spreading the love of yoga, spreading

[14:11] love to people, to your community.

[14:14] >> And you know, it's not a millionaire gig

[14:17] teaching yoga. Um, yeah, you can

[14:20] probably make a couple more bucks if you

[14:21] open up a studio

[14:23] >> and a second studio,

[14:25] >> but um, you want to just share, you

[14:27] know, everything that you've learned and

[14:29] that positive, yummy energy with

[14:31] everybody.

[14:33] >> Mhm. There's a great photo of you and

[14:35] the flow

[14:38] and some other moments.

[14:40] >> Oh, that's me with the blue hair putting

[14:42] my first uh flag down at the first

[14:45] studio.

[14:46] >> Oh, I love it. initiation.

[14:48] >> Yep.

[14:49] >> Once upon a time.

[14:50] >> That's the go.

[14:52] >> So then the path of the teacher becomes

[14:55] to me a creative process. So this

[14:58] question I love to ask because

[15:01] a lot of us see other people in a flow

[15:04] state where they're following their

[15:06] path, right? Their dharma. And they're

[15:09] like, "Ah, I feel blocked. I feel

[15:11] stopped." And we've all had moments like

[15:13] that. We're all human beings here. So

[15:15] what is it for you that allows for you

[15:18] to be in a flow state or even because

[15:21] you have a first and now a second studio

[15:25] like how are you creatively coming up

[15:27] because ideas are just ideas are just

[15:29] ideas right like it doesn't matter until

[15:32] you grab that idea embody it manifest it

[15:35] and then create and go through the

[15:38] process of what it takes right and as

[15:41] you and I both know when you're running

[15:42] companies and businesses behind the

[15:44] scenes there's lots challenges, lots of

[15:45] stress, lots of anxiety, lots of what am

[15:48] I doing moments

[15:49] >> and so how do you just like presence

[15:52] yourself to see the bigger vision and

[15:54] get into a flow state?

[15:56] >> So

[15:58] I do have to take a lot of classes

[16:01] because you can't just teach teach. You

[16:04] have to fill your own cup. So I like to

[16:06] take other instructor's classes um not

[16:09] just in my studio but outside. That's

[16:11] been getting a little more challenging

[16:12] lately to do. Um but even just um

[16:16] watching I get inspiration

[16:19] um from Gaia

[16:22] um and from Aloe. Um also of course

[16:26] social media is so big. I don't have a

[16:28] lot of time to plan. I don't write

[16:31] things down anymore. But I will be able

[16:34] to take like one little flow or one

[16:37] movement that I have I'm like, "Oh, I

[16:39] haven't done that in a long time." And

[16:42] incorporate it. um in a practice. So

[16:45] I'll I teach gentle yoga, yoga flow, um

[16:48] bar, restorative, all of these, you

[16:50] know, different modalities.

[16:52] Um and you just have to gain

[16:54] inspiration, you know, wherever you can.

[16:58] But the biggest biggest biggest part I

[17:00] would say is music, which I'm so excited

[17:03] for you to come to the studio because

[17:05] music is so my soul.

[17:08] >> So I dancing over here like

[17:10] >> I'm so feeling the music. So I playlist

[17:14] is big time.

[17:16] >> Even if I'm like I don't even know what

[17:17] I'm doing today. I kind of know what I

[17:19] want to talk about.

[17:20] >> I know a guy

[17:21] >> put a couple of songs together that go

[17:23] along with what you're trying to say.

[17:25] >> But if you feel that song and you're in

[17:27] the middle, you know how you have to

[17:29] start, you know, pretty chill and then

[17:30] you build up to that crescendo in your

[17:32] practice and then you take it back down.

[17:35] Um the music is where it's at. And my

[17:39] students will be like, "What kind of,

[17:41] you know, flow are we doing today? Do we

[17:42] have like crazy Janette or chill

[17:44] Janette?" And I'm like, "It depends."

[17:46] I'm like, "I picked this one playlist."

[17:48] Um, you know, it's got a little bit of

[17:50] everything. I'm like, "I promised I

[17:52] didn't have an energy drink today." And

[17:54] they're like, "All right." But even

[17:56] sometimes slow, you know, songs can be

[17:59] super powerful. So

[18:02] it's all and not all but a big big big

[18:06] huge part of that for me is music.

[18:09] >> I love that. Yeah, absolutely. And I you

[18:11] know that's what inspired me as being in

[18:13] different yoga studios and I love what

[18:16] you said about filling up your cup. It's

[18:17] so important because yeah,

[18:19] >> a lot of people that are in these spaces

[18:21] of contributing and healing and just

[18:26] teaching all the time then your energy

[18:28] is always going outward outward and to

[18:30] just fill that up and have moments for

[18:34] you to be like, "Oh, wow. I just got

[18:36] that little moment of wisdom or I just

[18:37] got to slow down and be guided by

[18:40] someone else." Because we always say

[18:42] that at in class when we're teaching, we

[18:44] say, "Oh, thank you all for taking the

[18:46] time, carving the time out for yourself

[18:48] and then you're like, where's my time?"

[18:51] >> Yeah, totally.

[18:52] >> I want to be on my

[18:54] >> Yeah. So, you have to do it. My partner

[18:57] actually today made me um sit I have an

[19:00] infrared sauna at the studio. He's like,

[19:02] "Let's go in the sauna." And I was like,

[19:04] "Okay." You know, let's get like that

[19:06] sweat on. So for 40 minutes, like we

[19:09] just listened to music and sweat it out

[19:11] and then cold plunged an hour after

[19:14] that.

[19:15] >> So he sometimes has to be like a little

[19:17] nudge to

[19:18] >> That's great. You need that. You need

[19:20] reminders.

[19:21] >> Yeah,

[19:22] >> that's important and so so powerful

[19:26] because yeah, there's that mind body and

[19:30] rest, right? Because our mind is like

[19:33] going all the time. body is going there

[19:35] and then I feel like when you rest, rest

[19:37] to me also is connected to heart energy

[19:38] because when you listen and you are slow

[19:41] you can feel your heartbeat or you're in

[19:43] the infrared sa or you and it's like ah

[19:46] okay I can just relax and I can receive

[19:48] and that's what I love you know

[19:49] personally for me because I create this

[19:51] music and these soundtracks that are

[19:53] designed for people to be inspired so

[19:55] much that my number one song that people

[19:57] listen to is called breath.

[19:59] >> Yes.

[19:59] >> Yes. Like let's just get back to basics

[20:01] humans.

[20:02] It was on my playlist when we first

[20:04] talked.

[20:05] >> That's right. I love that.

[20:06] >> I know this name and I like playlist and

[20:09] I was like, "Yes, yes, yes. I already

[20:10] have it."

[20:11] >> I love that. Yeah, exactly. I love that

[20:14] so much. Like I energetically am knowing

[20:17] something. Okay, that's it. You're on

[20:20] the playlist.

[20:21] >> Be careful what you wish for.

[20:22] >> Totally. I love that. That's what's fun

[20:25] for me about, you know, being a small

[20:27] town boy from Iowa and then just

[20:29] creating all this the music and it's

[20:31] globally in like 150 plus countries and

[20:34] it's pretty profound what you can do

[20:36] like and that's what I love about you

[20:38] know the global yoga communities is

[20:40] we're so connected in so many ways.

[20:41] Doesn't matter where you're at. Once you

[20:43] get into this practice, there's so much

[20:46] powerful ways. And for those people that

[20:48] have not ever practiced yoga, just to

[20:51] keep it simple, you're just making

[20:52] shapes with your body, but you're doing

[20:54] it from like ancient wisdom for modern

[20:56] day insanity. And you're doing it with

[20:57] breath the movement. And then also,

[20:59] you're interconnected with a community

[21:01] of people that are

[21:02] >> choosing to enhance and improve their

[21:05] lives. And that feels really good. You

[21:07] know, I was just watching something

[21:08] recently and the guy was like,

[21:11] >> um, talk about going out when you were a

[21:13] kid in high school and all that. You

[21:15] were just just to like blow off steam

[21:17] kind of thing, right? It's like there

[21:18] was no like I'm going to consciously

[21:20] intentionally make a choice. You're

[21:22] like, I'm you know, college life is a

[21:24] whole different thing. But I think like

[21:26] when we get into these adult bodies,

[21:28] we're like, "Oh, what is my path?

[21:30] Where's my true north? What am I

[21:31] designed to do?" And wouldn't you agree

[21:33] if you never I mean it sounds simple to

[21:35] say but if you would not have ever taken

[21:38] yoga then maybe it wouldn't even

[21:40] propelled you to become a business

[21:41] owner.

[21:42] >> For sure. And luckily too there's a lot

[21:44] of um I say youngsters

[21:47] >> um 30 and under that you know instead of

[21:50] a Friday night you know going out

[21:52] drinking they're like let's go to a

[21:53] sound bath. I'm like yeah

[21:56] >> I love it.

[21:57] >> They're coming around. So cool that your

[21:59] studio is offering that and as you know

[22:01] different fun cool events and

[22:04] >> yeah you know it's interesting I rarely

[22:06] w have mentioned this on a podcast but

[22:08] I'll I'll bring it up because it's truly

[22:10] like I came to the fork in the road in

[22:12] my life where I just had a clear aha

[22:14] moment and it was am I going to make a

[22:18] lifeenhancing choice or am I going to

[22:19] make a life destructive choice. So, how

[22:21] wise of these souls that are coming to

[22:23] your studio be like,

[22:24] >> "Hey, besides just like killing brain

[22:26] cells and doing these things that, you

[22:27] know, I can just do.

[22:29] >> I want to actually evolve and grow."

[22:32] And, you know, when you're still and

[22:34] when you're in connection, you get to

[22:35] hear that inner wisdom. And then, of

[22:37] course, like we all know, we get these

[22:38] like downloads. We get this like, you

[22:41] know, this moment you're like, "Oh my

[22:42] gosh, life is awesome." Because we

[22:44] forgot because we were in our in our

[22:46] minds. We're in our anxiety and our

[22:48] stress. And so it's lovely. And and this

[22:51] jumps right into the fourth part of our

[22:53] interview here, which is how has the

[22:56] community response been?

[22:59] >> I have like the best members ever, ever,

[23:02] ever. I'm so grateful. So um they are

[23:07] just so grateful to be to have a space

[23:11] to practice and they're always thanking

[23:14] you know me and all the instructors like

[23:17] for being there for them um for holding

[23:20] space for you know teaching them flows.

[23:24] Um and everybody that comes to this

[23:27] studio like comes quite often. So, you

[23:31] meet so many new people and it's so cool

[23:34] to see like

[23:37] people you I know sometimes you're not

[23:40] supposed to talk before yoga and some

[23:41] studios are super quiet, but it's so

[23:43] hard for them to be quiet because they

[23:45] all like love each other so much. So,

[23:48] when they come in to practice, they're

[23:50] like, "Hey, how's how are you doing?

[23:51] How's your," you know, and they all met

[23:53] there. So, it's so like dreamy all of

[23:58] the connections that are made. Um, and

[24:01] uh, it just I want to do it forever. And

[24:05] I used to say I have these like selonite

[24:07] wands at the front and back entrance,

[24:10] which is supposed to like keep in the

[24:12] good energy and the positivity.

[24:14] And everyone that comes to the studio,

[24:16] even if it's their first time, they're

[24:18] like, "Everyone here is so nice and like

[24:22] it's such a cool community." And I'm

[24:24] like, "I know." I'm like, "It's because

[24:25] I have these selonite wands." And uh you

[24:27] know there's no negative energy or

[24:29] negative people allowed in here.

[24:32] >> Just doesn't happen.

[24:34] >> But but they're so awesome. I I mean

[24:37] everyone that steps foot in there, you

[24:39] know, is just

[24:41] >> so amazing and I'm super grateful.

[24:44] Instructors

[24:47] I just like and I always say I'm the

[24:49] luckiest in the whole world. I seriously

[24:52] am like dream team and I'm like trying

[24:55] I'm like hoarding them a little bit for

[24:57] the new studio to open and parish so

[25:00] that they can go back and forth so I can

[25:02] share them you know with everybody.

[25:06] >> I love that. And so that's a part of

[25:08] your journey and you know I put up above

[25:10] here this is your website lwr

[25:12] yogabar.com

[25:14] and so you are in the process of opening

[25:17] up a second studio. uh let us know how

[25:20] that's going.

[25:22] >> Um so it's about 22 minutes north. It's

[25:25] called um I think it's called Parish is

[25:27] the town, but it's called North River

[25:29] Ranch. So we'll have Lakewood Ranch and

[25:32] North River Ranch. And the permits were

[25:34] just approved last week. So it's been a

[25:38] long time. I've had the lease for a long

[25:40] time, but they're in there. They're

[25:42] working. And the contractor is like, I

[25:43] know you want to get this open in

[25:45] October. We're going to try the best we

[25:47] can. So, um, I'm super excited about

[25:50] that. I haven't really told anyone, so

[25:53] I'm giving you the tea. Um, we're

[25:56] probably going to be adding infrared and

[25:59] heat to that studio. I don't have it

[26:02] here.

[26:03] >> Okay.

[26:04] >> So, we have um an awesome crew over

[26:08] there that's going to, you know, build

[26:10] it all up. We'll get it done. uh we're

[26:12] going to see how much funds are left

[26:14] over. But I already had someone say,

[26:16] "Hey, if you don't have the money, you

[26:18] know, to finish like we have an investor

[26:21] for you."

[26:22] >> Amazing.

[26:22] >> If you want to put up those panels and

[26:24] I'm like,

[26:26] >> I love that community support and the

[26:28] vision that people are feeling and

[26:30] >> I love it. Yeah. And you know I'll say

[26:32] the same thing like when you are in that

[26:36] flow state around creating and listening

[26:39] community members and getting the

[26:40] feedback from people and as you said you

[26:42] have the best out there that are just

[26:44] you know feeling that connectivity. It's

[26:46] a huge piece for you to be expanding.

[26:49] And so I just want to acknowledge and

[26:50] honor that because, you know, any one

[26:53] could possibly pull off something once,

[26:55] you know, I'll use the analogy of the

[26:58] music industry of like someone could do

[26:59] an album, right? But then it's like,

[27:01] okay, what about your second album? What

[27:02] are your third album? What about your

[27:03] remixes? What are your singles? What

[27:04] about the tour? What? And the same thing

[27:06] with yoga. Like, oh, cool. You did yoga

[27:07] once and then you stopped because you

[27:09] said you weren't flexible enough. Well,

[27:11] that's the place you become flexible.

[27:13] So,

[27:15] yeah. So, it's a whole system I feel of

[27:19] how you can be in that flow state and I

[27:23] am witnessing that in you is to really

[27:25] grow and build and to have two different

[27:28] studios where it's going to find that

[27:30] community that's 20 minutes away and

[27:32] then I love how you're going to have

[27:33] different amenities and different

[27:34] options so then people can choose

[27:37] sometimes, right?

[27:39] >> Yeah, we have Ariel at this one. I

[27:41] wasn't sure if I should put it over

[27:43] there because we're only 20 minutes away

[27:45] and they'll be able to go to, you know,

[27:46] back and forth to each studio.

[27:48] >> So, I was like, well, this one could be

[27:50] like the aerial land and then the other

[27:51] one can

[27:53] >> be the heat and infrared land.

[27:55] >> Perfect. I love it. I'm a hot yoga guy,

[27:57] so I love it. I've I've done many, many

[28:00] hot yoga classes, especially for my male

[28:02] body hips don't lie. When I f when I had

[28:06] to first do pigeon posture, I burst out

[28:09] laughing in class because I was like,

[28:11] "She wants me to do what with my leg and

[28:13] my hip joint." Like I was like, like no

[28:16] way. Like this is not happening.

[28:18] >> And now I can be full, you know, posture

[28:21] of pigeon, but it takes multiple

[28:23] classes, multiple consistency. And you

[28:26] know that's what I feel for me

[28:27] personally and I know that there's an

[28:29] energetic

[28:30] >> benefit that so many of your students

[28:31] are getting beyond strength, balance and

[28:33] flexibility which are usually my top

[28:34] three. not only physical strength,

[28:36] balance and flexibility, but it's also

[28:38] the mental flexibility and it's also

[28:41] applies to so many other parts of our

[28:42] life. But for me personally, I have

[28:44] always

[28:45] loved the routine and the discipline and

[28:49] hey, no matter what, I'm going to be

[28:50] committed to self-care in this way. And

[28:53] I feel like that's the one of the

[28:55] reasons why I mean, heck, 10 years ago

[28:57] when I first started, you know, working

[28:59] on my music for this, it was wild. Like

[29:02] now 10 years later there's like so many

[29:05] probably double the amount of yoga

[29:06] studios that are happening because I you

[29:09] know it's only going to grow where the

[29:12] energy flows and when it's that positive

[29:14] vibe

[29:15] >> as you said like your crystals and

[29:16] everything you're putting in the

[29:18] beautiful intentions.

[29:19] >> So it's a reflection.

[29:21] >> You said discipline and I have to bring

[29:24] up um ashtanga.

[29:26] >> Yes.

[29:26] >> So we have ashtanga that is one of also

[29:29] like my go-to like me time things. I

[29:32] take um one of my instructor Rachel's

[29:34] classes because I don't really have a

[29:36] lot of discipline even though I'm a yoga

[29:38] instructor. I wish I could say every

[29:40] morning I woke up and sat here and

[29:42] meditated and you know uh was a

[29:46] vegetarian

[29:47] >> but you're making moves. You're building

[29:49] studios. You're doing it.

[29:50] >> But I take

[29:51] >> I'll ring a bell for you. There you go.

[29:53] >> Yeah. Is the discipline and you see

[29:56] where you are every time you take the

[29:58] class.

[29:59] >> You know, you progress. you go a little

[30:01] bit further. That's like the perfect

[30:03] example of having that same um the same

[30:07] postures throughout that practice so you

[30:08] could see where you are. But once you

[30:10] start going to yoga, everyone in the

[30:12] world, you'll see where you are mentally

[30:14] and physically, spiritually,

[30:17] >> in your heart, all of the above.

[30:19] >> Yes. And sometimes like my roommates in

[30:22] San Diego did about 14 years ago,

[30:25] >> they just kind of threw me into a level

[30:27] three Ashtanga class out of the blue

[30:31] >> with Tim Miller by the way. You know,

[30:33] he's the OG that brought Ashtanga to the

[30:35] west.

[30:36] >> Yeah. My dear friends Michelle and

[30:38] Agatha. I started doing some basic, you

[30:42] know, venyasa flows and a few hot yoga

[30:44] classes, but maybe I was a couple months

[30:46] into my practice. They're like, "Hey,

[30:47] we're going." And they're both

[30:48] Ashtanginis. So to them, the context of

[30:51] yoga is Ashtanga,

[30:53] >> right? It's like if if you love rock

[30:56] music and you tell your buddies you're

[30:57] going to a concert, you're probably

[30:58] going to go see, you know, Foo Fighters

[31:00] or something. You're not going to be

[31:01] like, "Hey, we're going to go see Enya."

[31:04] Wait, the context is we're going to

[31:06] yoga. So, I was a little surprised on

[31:08] how challenging it was and how much

[31:11] focus it required and how much my ego

[31:14] just had to like be destroyed and melted

[31:17] and completely evaporated because I

[31:20] thought I was tough. I thought I was

[31:22] flexible. I thought I was, you know, for

[31:24] me personally, it was like the male ego,

[31:26] like I can do this. And I was in class.

[31:28] >> There's students in there running

[31:29] circles around me binds and stuff. And

[31:32] I'm like, my hips are tight.

[31:35] >> Yeah. I going to keep coming back.

[31:38] >> Yes.

[31:39] Well, and that's the great thing is and

[31:40] and I think you mentioned this in an

[31:42] earlier question like sometimes we learn

[31:43] what to do and what not to do with uh

[31:46] classes and with other people in our

[31:48] lives and we're presented with these

[31:50] opportunities to be like okay that's

[31:52] something I have yet to achieve and I'm

[31:55] going to and I knew even though as I

[31:57] said I couldn't do pigeon posture um at

[32:00] first I knew you know I had to use the

[32:02] blocks and I was like high up and I was

[32:04] like like hips oh my gosh what is

[32:07] happening

[32:08] And it's a good pain. And you know

[32:10] that's a big thing I want to share with

[32:11] everyone watching and listening is a lot

[32:13] of times when we do physical practices

[32:15] there's this part of our minds it's like

[32:17] ouch I'm going to stop. Now if there's a

[32:20] distinction of good pain and bad pain of

[32:22] course but just being in a place where

[32:24] you're supported especially if a studio

[32:27] um you know has adjusters or of course

[32:30] certain props and there's ways that you

[32:32] can ease in the poses and postures that

[32:34] over time you're going to get there. And

[32:37] that's, you know, I live in Costa Rica

[32:38] and the term poco aapoco is said a lot

[32:40] like little by little you get there. So

[32:43] amazing.

[32:44] >> I over prop, you know, so that someone

[32:47] coming off the streets that has never

[32:48] been to yoga before can just come right

[32:51] in. Here's bolsters, blocks, blankets.

[32:54] We're going to use everything so that

[32:55] you can do a forward fold and kind of

[32:57] touch the floor or, you know,

[33:00] >> Yes. Absolutely. I I

[33:02] >> comfy and make you help you love it.

[33:07] I love that.

[33:09] >> So nice. Yeah, I love the level of

[33:10] support that you offer. And I want to

[33:13] mention to everyone that we are going to

[33:14] be collaborating for our September 26th

[33:17] at 700 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It's going to

[33:20] be a journey with live yoga music and

[33:24] Janette guiding the flow. And do you

[33:27] want to share anything about the class?

[33:30] >> Sure. Um, so we're doing a a venyasa

[33:33] type flow. It will be me and um a couple

[33:37] of other instructors, Elsa's going to

[33:39] help out um Allison, Hannah, and Becky

[33:44] because at the end of the practice,

[33:46] it'll be like a restorative with some

[33:48] handson

[33:50] action going on.

[33:52] >> At your discretion, of course, we'll

[33:54] flip up a card if you don't mind, you

[33:56] know, having hands on you. Just a little

[33:58] press of your shoulders or a pull of

[34:01] your feet, just that gentle support. um

[34:04] as a community connection after vibing

[34:07] out to the music. Um just keeping that

[34:10] love in the room, keeping that support

[34:12] going and just, you know, sharing that

[34:15] energy with everyone there.

[34:18] >> I love that. Yes. And I can't wait to be

[34:21] there and share and yeah, just really

[34:25] connect in with this incredible

[34:27] community

[34:28] >> that has Yeah. Just has that

[34:31] interconnectedness. And I said it's such

[34:33] a great compliment to you that now it's

[34:35] growing and expanding into a second

[34:36] location. So,

[34:38] >> thank you.

[34:38] >> Hooray. Hooray. Okay. This is your

[34:41] opportunity to share any closing words

[34:43] uh that you'd like to share with

[34:44] everyone. Thanks.

[34:45] Um

[34:47] I guess what comes to mind yesterday um

[34:52] was September 12th and in my practices I

[34:57] usually draw things from real life you

[34:59] know to discuss as like the theme and I

[35:03] was just wanting everyone to remember uh

[35:07] what it was like September 12th 2001 and

[35:11] how everybody treated each other um you

[35:14] know with love, with respect, with

[35:15] kindness. Um, and just wishing, hoping,

[35:20] you know, praying that we remember that

[35:23] we should be doing that every day. Um,

[35:27] so just keeping that in mind, just

[35:29] sharing your love with people, sharing

[35:30] kindness with people. Uh,

[35:34] and just

[35:36] coming back to that,

[35:38] you know, that feeling of how we all

[35:41] felt on September 12th, 2001.

[35:46] Thank you for that. And

[35:48] >> yes, the connectivity

[35:50] >> with everything going on in the world.

[35:52] >> Absolutely.

[35:53] >> Specifically this week, everything has

[35:55] been

[35:59] >> and I let's trust too that if whoever's

[36:02] watching this on the archive in the

[36:03] future that we have a brand new

[36:06] paradigm, we have a new earth. people

[36:08] are happy, optimistic, connected,

[36:10] loving, kind, and that we all get to

[36:13] have conversations and we all get to be

[36:15] peaceful with one another and om shanti

[36:18] shanti shanti peace peace peace for all

[36:20] of us

[36:22] >> and a practice of peace, right? Like

[36:25] this is why you're expanding. This is

[36:26] why I get to go on tour and share my

[36:28] music. It is truly what the world

[36:31] deserves, right? because we don't need

[36:33] this

[36:34] >> consistent anxiety, tension, violence,

[36:37] and when we're in this peaceful practice

[36:39] and we're kind to ourselves and kind to

[36:41] others,

[36:43] >> then the pathway is possible. And thanks

[36:46] for sharing your story and your pathway

[36:48] to become a teacher and open a studio

[36:50] and and have a

[36:51] >> a peaceful location, a sacred space, a

[36:54] container for people to come and feel

[36:55] that connection. And as you said,

[36:57] doesn't matter what kind of studio norms

[37:00] if your culture is. Hey, you walk in and

[37:02] you say hello and you're talkative.

[37:04] Yeah,

[37:04] >> I'm all for it because you know

[37:08] lots of instructors, you know, even

[37:10] Himalaya, my beloved who's, you know,

[37:12] her roots are from India. She always

[37:14] like shakes that out of people like just

[37:16] because you're spiritual doesn't mean

[37:17] you have to be like

[37:19] all the time and super duper serious.

[37:21] She'll like ah she like you know pali

[37:23] and lions were all these poses. She's

[37:26] like, you know, I'm 100% bloodline from

[37:29] India and I can be this way and it

[37:31] doesn't make you less or more spiritual

[37:34] or super shamanic.

[37:36] >> So, I love the fact that, you know, I

[37:38] was a school teacher many years. So,

[37:39] when there was people talking, if I love

[37:41] the energy because they're excited or

[37:43] they're talking about their lives or

[37:44] what's going on and

[37:45] >> yeah, they're sharing

[37:47] >> their throat chakra. How many people

[37:48] have a closed voice that don't ever

[37:52] share who they are, express themselves

[37:53] emotionally? So, I love that your studio

[37:55] is such a container for that um to take

[37:58] place and just want to make sure

[37:59] everyone knows how to find you. So, this

[38:02] is

[38:03] >> the website and when you go there,

[38:05] you'll find the event. We'd love for you

[38:07] to sign up not only for this experience,

[38:10] but become a member and find out why

[38:13] Janette and her incredible

[38:15] crew

[38:17] >> are just here to support. And as you

[38:20] said earlier, just the love, just find

[38:23] yourself in love. And you know, when

[38:25] people say the word universe, I'm always

[38:27] like you inverse, like go within that

[38:30] the inversion of like where we are. And

[38:32] there's something inside us that is this

[38:35] divine magical part. And a lot of it has

[38:38] been closed off. It's been shut down.

[38:39] And I love how you're bursting open

[38:42] these hearts and your community. So I

[38:45] want to acknowledge you for

[38:46] >> Thank you.

[38:47] >> your gifts and your leadership. too.

[38:49] Thank you for your gifts bringing music

[38:51] to the world.

[38:53] >> Thank you. It's so much fun. I love it.

[38:55] I love being on tour. I love sharing.

[38:58] And yeah, so everyone check out the

[39:00] website. Um check out my music and I

[39:02] will complete with one of the songs I'll

[39:04] be playing which is called the universe

[39:06] incarnate with incredible singer Ashira

[39:09] Soul. So thank you Janette. I will see

[39:11] you

[39:12] >> very sooner than later. Right.

[39:15] >> Okay.

[39:15] >> Bye everyone.

[39:16] >> Love you. Yeah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Janette had practiced casually for years before a friend's parents helped her find a temporary office job during a divorce. A woman she met there, who owned a yoga school in Bradenton, Florida, suggested she do yoga teacher training. Janette began a 200-hour program while raising two young children.
Right before finishing her 200-hour training, Janette stepped away, saying she got nervous about suddenly being a teacher and did not feel ready. She returned about a year later and enrolled in another 200-hour program. Her story shows that stepping back from a commitment does not have to be permanent.
The 5Q interview is a podcast hosted by DTO, who records as DTO Dave the Organism, where he speaks with what he calls visionary leaders, healers, and creative people. In this episode, he speaks with Janette, the founder of The Yoga Barre in Florida, about her path into yoga.
DTO argues that no matter how someone first entered sacred practice, there is a connectivity among teachers, students, musicians, and even the people who build a space. He describes an energy that goes into creating places where people can feel peace. The idea ties together the personal stories of yoga teachers with the physical spaces they create.
DTO said he is at Embody Costa Rica, a wellness and retreat center he and his partner began after moving to Costa Rica in 2020. He described building a 2,000-foot yoga shala there. The retreat also includes a recording studio beneath the shala space.
In the episode, DTO said he will play at The Yoga Barre on September 26, from 7 to 9 p.m., as part of a September tour that includes Tampa and St. Petersburg. He called it his first time touring that region of Florida.
Janette described her 200-hour training as far more than physical postures. It included learning the philosophy behind the practice and the reasons for each pose, and it served as therapy for her during a difficult period. For her, the training was a space to process personal challenges as well as to learn how to teach.
