Stephan Pende Wormland is a meditation and mindfulness teacher who draws on both Eastern philosophy and Western psychology. His work centres on what he calls going beyond mindfulness: effortless being, the warmth of the heart, and awakening through mindfulness, meditation and self-inquiry. His approach rests on Radiant Mind, mindfulness and meditation, and on gradual and sudden methods of awakening from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, grounded in Buddhist and Western psychology, psychodynamic understanding and mindful communication.
Born in Germany in 1965, he earned a master's degree in clinical psychology, trained in Gestalt therapy and worked for six years at a psychiatric hospital. He was an ordained monk in the Tibetan tradition for 11 years, spent five of those years in group and solitary retreats, and served as director of Nalanda Monastery in the south of France. His main teacher was the late Lama Zopa Rinpoche, spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). He also received teachings from Tibetan masters of the four schools, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and has studied with Western teachers such as Peter Fenner, Alan Wallace, Rob Preece, Alex Berzin, Pema Chodron, Robert Thurman and Ken McLeod.
Since 2009 he has studied Radiant Mind with Peter Fenner, completed the Nondual Teacher Training, and acts as a program adviser for the Potential Project. For many years he was resident teacher of the Center for Visdom og Medfølelse in Copenhagen, and he now leads meditation events in Buddhist centres around Europe, online and in person. Alongside retreats and classes, he offers spiritual mentoring, mindfulness coaching and professional supervision, and shares guided meditations, talks and podcasts in English and German.
Worth Knowing
Stephan Pende Wormland is a meditation teacher and former Tibetan Buddhist monk who synthesizes classical Buddhist training with Western clinical psychology and contemplative nondual approaches. Born in Germany in 1965, he brings forty years of continuous meditation practice—including eleven years as an ordained monk and five spent in extended retreats—into teaching that addresses both the mind's habitual patterns and the heart's capacity for warmth and openness. His lineage is grounded in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, particularly the Gelug school through his principal teacher Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the late spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). What distinguishes him is his refusal of an either-or stance: students come because his teaching demonstrates that rigorous Buddhist philosophy and contemporary Western psychology—his master's degree in clinical psychology and Gestalt therapy training—need not contradict each other. He teaches that meditation is not primarily about blissful states or escape from difficulty, but about recognizing an aliveness and completeness already present underneath habitual reactivity. His particular emphasis on what he calls "going beyond mindfulness" and finding the "warmth of the heart" suggests a teacher invested in the fullness of awakening, not merely stress reduction.
