Origins and Early Life

Sinta Wullur was born in Bandung, Indonesia, and moved to the Netherlands in 1968. That single biographical fact helps explain the shape of everything she has since made. She is described as an Indonesian-Dutch composer, pianist, singer and gamelan musician, and the hyphen is not decorative: her work lives in the space between two cultural worlds, and she has spent a career treating that space as a place to compose in rather than a gap to be explained.

Beyond the move, the record of her childhood is thin, and it would be a disservice to fill it with guesses. What is documented begins with her musical education in the Netherlands, which was rigorous and thoroughly Western in its institutional structure.

Conservatory Training and a Widening Field

Wullur studied piano at the Sweelinck Conservatory with Willem Brons, and studied composition there with Ton de Leeuw. In 1988 she continued at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where her teachers included Theo Loevendie and Louis Andriessen. She also studied electronic music with Gilius van Bergeijk and Jan Boerman. She received her degree in composition in 1991.

Alongside this path, she studied gamelan and singing with several teachers in Bali and Java. The sources do not name those teachers, and so they remain unnamed here. What can be said is that her education ran on two tracks at once: the European conservatory tradition on one side, and hands-on study of Indonesian instruments and vocal practice on the other.

The Turning Point

If there is a pivot in her story, it is the decision to stop treating those two tracks as separate. According to her website, she has connected Indian ragas with Indonesian music in her compositions since 1989, a date that falls before she completed her degree. The sources do not describe a single dramatic moment of conversion, and it would be wrong to invent one. What the timeline shows is a gradual convergence: gamelan study, raga, and conservatory composition feeding one another during the years she was still a student.

Two further milestones followed. She founded several gamelan groups in the Netherlands, including Tirta and Irama. And since 1992 she has worked as a Javanese singer with the gamelan ensemble Widosari, which places her inside a working Javanese performance community, not only at the composer's desk.

Core Contribution

Wullur is known for cross-cultural composition in which no single tradition is merely decoration. Her description of her own aims is plain: music transcends the idiom of words and is free from the language barrier that divides the world.

A distinctive technical choice supports that idea. She uses chromatically tuned gamelan instruments, both in her compositions and in her own ensemble, Multifoon. Traditional Javanese gamelan is built on the five-tone slendro and seven-tone pelog systems; chromatic tuning departs from those, making the instruments speak a harmonic language that Western-trained ears can follow while the unmistakable gamelan sound remains. It is a pragmatic bridge, and also a compositional statement about what these instruments can do.

Her sound, accordingly, is hybrid. Gongs anchor many textures; her voice draws on Javanese singing; study of Indian ragas contributes melodic ornament and slow modal development; and as a pianist she brings keyboard harmony into the same field. Pacing tends toward resonance and decay rather than rhythmic drive.

Major Works and Projects

Her named projects include Ritual Bells, Global Gongs, Raga Impressions and Ensemble Global Gongs. The most striking is Global Gongs, a gong installation of 80 hanging and standing gongs combined with gamelan instruments. It is a spatial work, conceived for a room rather than for earbuds, and it pushes the gamelan idiom to a scale few composers attempt. Raga Impressions points to the Indian side of her practice, while Ritual Bells suggests a ceremonial register, though the available material does not detail either.

On record, the title the bio names is Gong and Strings, her most recent CD. The wider discography is not itemised in the sources, so no ranking or complete catalogue can responsibly be offered. Newcomers might begin with Gong and Strings, then look to her website, sintawullur.com, for project material, including Global Gongs.

The Current Chapter

Her activities today span compositions, music projects, lessons and ensembles in which she performs as singer and pianist. The performing vehicles most closely tied to her name are Widosari, Multifoon and Ensemble Global Gongs. The sources list no upcoming events, so no dates or venues can be confirmed here; her website is the most direct place to look for current schedules.

Cultural Significance

Wullur matters first as a figure who works from lived knowledge of more than one world. Her Javanese singing is performed within a living ensemble, not borrowed from field recordings, and her Dutch conservatory pedigree is well documented. That combination is rare, and it makes her less a purist than a composer who treats traditions as materials.

That also defines her audience. Listeners wanting one tradition kept intact may hear compromise; those seeking song structure or dance rhythm will find the pacing too open. But for people drawn to resonance, to the meeting of gong and piano, raga and gamelan, her work offers something spacious and unusual. It is not simply calming background: NRC wrote of her, "Wullur beschikt over durf en elan, en haar theatrale inslag is onmiskenbaar," roughly, that she has nerve and flair, and an unmistakable theatrical streak. Any listener expecting a conventional meditation album should keep that in mind.

Her public footprint is modest. Her Spotify following is small, no awards are recorded, and the NRC line is the one verified press citation on file. Dutch-language sources may hold more. What the record does show is a sustained, coherent body of work built on a single conviction: that music can cross the boundaries words cannot.
