Heartland 3 (Live) by Radhika Das: A Listening Guide

Where It Sits in the Arc

Heartland 3 (Live) came out on 2 June 2023 and is the third volume in a live series that began with Heartland Live in 2022 and ran through Heartland 5 (Live) in 2025. At four tracks, it is a compact entry in a catalogue where live documentation forms the spine. Radhika Das is a London-based kirtan leader and bhakti yoga teacher with sixteen years of practice behind him, and his live nights, led with a band, are where the work is most at home. This volume catches that format in the middle of its run, after the series had established itself and before the later refinements of the 2024 and 2025 volumes.

Sonic Character

The facts about this record are modest, so it is best to be plain about what is known. Radhika Das's live nights run in call-and-response: a lead voice carries the mantra and the band and room answer. The public materials do not name the instruments, so anything specific is expectation rather than fact. Kirtan ensembles in this tradition commonly centre on harmonium, hand drums and cymbals, and those are the sounds to listen for.

What you can count on is the pacing. Sacred names are sung over a steady pulse, and a single mantra may run for minutes because repetition is the point. The mood is restraint rather than spectacle. The voice is not decoration over a template; it carries the name itself. With only four tracks, each one has room to build slowly, and the recording preserves what a studio version cannot: the room answering back.

Tracks and What to Listen For

The track titles for this album are not part of the information available to me, and I won't guess at them. Titles that appear elsewhere in his catalogue, such as "Shri Rama" or "Radhe Govinda," cannot be assumed to belong here. Check the tracklist on Spotify, where the album is listed, and use these approaches for each of the four pieces:

  • The first track. Listen to how the lead voice sets the terms: the pulse, the tempo, how the melody is introduced before the room joins in. Kirtan opens by teaching you the tune.
  • The point where the room takes over. In any live kirtan, the strongest moment comes when the response grows louder than the lead. Wait for it. It is where the recording earns being live.
  • The longest, most repetitive stretch. This is where first-time listeners tend to drift. Stay with it. The melody tends to reveal itself as the repetition settles.
  • The closing piece. Notice how the energy resolves, whether the band slows or the final name is left hanging in the room.

Place in the Tradition

This is bhakti, the devotional path within Hinduism that centres love of a personal deity expressed through singing, chanting and remembrance. The teaching around it draws on the Bhagavad Gita, and the form is kirtan in call-and-response. The public materials do not name a specific sampradaya or guru lineage, so I won't assign one. What is documented is the practice itself: mantra meditation as method, and sacred names set to melody.

It also helps to place the record within the Heartland series, which shows the band format being refined across several years of nights. The third volume is a waypoint in that development rather than a standalone statement.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This record is for someone already drawn to bhakti, kirtan or slow sacred song, and who wants to join in rather than simply observe. It suits a listener who has been to a chanting night, or wants to, and would like to carry the experience home. It also fits a moment when a restless mind needs something to return to. Repetition gives the mind an anchor, which is the use Radhika Das describes for mantra: a way to calm and centre.

It is less likely to work for listeners who want high-tempo electronic music, cinematic production or background sound for a workout. Kirtan is repetitive by design, and a mantra sustained for several minutes will feel slow to anyone expecting verse-chorus structure. People seeking a purely secular or aesthetic experience may find the devotional framing too present, since this is an offering to a deity rather than neutral sound.

How to Listen Closely

Choose a quiet evening and play the album through in order, without skipping. Four tracks is short enough to hear in a single sitting.

  • Headphones or good speakers. The value of a live recording is the sense of the room, and the response of the crowd is easy to lose on laptop speakers.
  • Sing back. The format assumes participation. Even under your breath, answering the lead voice changes what you hear.
  • Sit with one mantra. A reasonable test is to chant along for five minutes without waiting for the song to change. The point is the settling, not the progression.
  • Return to it. Come back after hearing a studio album such as Mantra, from June 2025, to feel how the same practice sounds with an audience present.

If the first pass feels slow, give it a second. The record rewards patience more than novelty.
