The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 3: Drifting) by Nirodha: A Listening Guide

A single released on 22 May 2026, one track long, and part of a larger work still taking shape.

Where This Sits in Nirodha's Arc

Nirodha is the meditative music project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. His work runs along two threads: a wordless one for sleep and stillness, built on native flute and classical guitar, and a voice-and-mantra one built on chant, kirtan and tanpura. The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 3: Drifting) belongs to the first thread. It is the third part of Night Sanctuary, which Espada's own sources describe as an album in progress, released one piece at a time rather than dropped whole.

That method matters. Where Chants from the Heart is a finished statement of voice, harmonium and silence, and Surya pairs nylon-string guitar with tanpura, Night Sanctuary unfolds slowly, in public, a piece at a time. "Drifting" is one step in that unfolding. It is a single with one track, so there is no sequence to navigate. There is only the piece and whatever it asks of you.

Sonic Character

The facts available about this release are modest: one track, released in 2026, and part of the sleep-oriented Night Sanctuary project. What can be said about its sound comes from how Nirodha works generally, and from how his sources describe Night Sanctuary: native flute pieces designed for rest.

Espada chooses instruments for their ability to hold a single tone without demanding attention. He records alone, mostly at night, with whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest, and he asks what can be removed rather than added. Expect, then, an austere sound: sustained flute tones, little rhythmic or harmonic movement, and silence treated as a compositional choice instead of a gap to be filled. There is no lush reverb, orchestration or sonic drama here, and the mood is closer to hypnagogic than atmospheric. The title, "Drifting," names the transition the music is built to accompany: the slow release from waking into sleep.

The Signature Track

With a single, the signature track is the only track. The Night Sanctuary (Pt. 3: Drifting) is the piece to name, and what makes it land is the discipline behind it. Most sleep music relies on textural washes and subtle beats. Nirodha's approach is more skeletal, and that is the point. The ear has nothing to follow, so the thinking mind has nothing to grip. It is music that works whether you fall asleep to it or simply sit with it.

I won't describe moment-by-moment events in the track, since that would mean inventing detail. Listen for how little happens, and how that absence becomes the experience.

Place in the Tradition

Nirodha's wider work sits within the Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, though Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditional scholar. This particular release, though, is wordless and instrumental, so it sits closer to the contemplative and ambient end of his practice than the devotional one. Its kinship with kirtan is one of philosophy: the name Nirodha means cessation, the stilling of mental noise, and Espada describes stillness as something you remember rather than something you achieve. The music doesn't try to take you somewhere. It tries to get out of the way.

It also stands apart from much wellness-industry sleep music, which tends toward polish and aesthetic. Here the reference point is restraint.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This is for the restless mind at the end of a long day: the listener who lies awake tracking thoughts, or who finds busier sleep playlists too textured to settle into. It suits people who already value subtlety and are comfortable with patient attention.

It is not for everyone. Listeners seeking rhythmic momentum, emotional catharsis or energy will find it static. Those who prefer lush production may find it underproduced. And it is not designed as passive background listening; its stillness is meant to be attended to, or released into.

How to Listen

Take it at night, in a dark or dim room, ideally alone. Headphones will help you hear the quiet between tones, though a low speaker also works. Don't multitask. Lie down or sit comfortably, press play, and let the piece do less than you expect. If you fall asleep, the music has done its work. If you stay awake, notice how your attention settles when there is nothing to chase.

As the rest of Night Sanctuary arrives, this track will make more sense as one chapter among others. For now, it stands as a single, quiet invitation to remember what stillness feels like.

AboutNirodha

Daniel Espada, as Nirodha, shapes native flute, classical guitar, harmonium and voice into quiet, single-tone music that helps restless minds settle into stillness.
