Where to Start with Miles Clark: A Beginner's Guide

Miles Clark makes Noise Foundation, a project of hand-built pink, brown and white noise and ambient soundscapes for sleep, focus and restless minds. He describes it as function rather than art, so the way in is to use it rather than to study it.

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with the Noise Foundation Spotify artist page and play a pink noise recording. No album titles are documented, so I can't point you to a named record, and the page is the most current guide to the catalogue anyway. It holds more than twenty albums and over a thousand tracks, which is a lot to wade into blind. Pink noise is the right first choice because it is the even, balanced colour, the one least likely to strike a newcomer as too deep or too bright. Play it quietly, at night or while working, for at least twenty minutes before judging it.

The Next Three Places to Go

Brown noise. Deeper and more rumbling than pink. If pink feels thin, this is where you'll probably settle.

White noise. The brightest and hissiest of the three, and the clearest sound mask. Try it after the other two, since it is the least forgiving.

The studio notes at noise-foundation.com. Miles writes about how people actually listen to different noise colours. They're the best companion to the music, and they help you work out which colour suits you. The Noise Foundation YouTube channel hosts additional material if you want another way to sample.

What to Expect

Expect very little happening, on purpose. There are no sung vocals, no melody to follow and no climax. Pacing is slow and nonlinear, and tracks are built to hold steady. The sound comes from a Juno 6, granular synthesis, guitar pedals, found sounds and tape machines, and it carries warmth, grit, crackle and drift. Miles likens it to a radio left on between stations, an image from childhood, when he fell asleep with a Fisher Price radio under his pillow, half-listening to Radio Luxembourg through the static. He states that he uses no AI generation and no stock loops.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Expecting ambient music. Miles started this because the ambient music people recommended was too musical and too distracting at 3am. If you want pads and melody, this is the opposite.

Hearing the crackle as a fault. The grit is intentional and central to the sound. If you want a perfectly clean signal, a purely digital generator may suit you better.

Expecting guided meditation. His profile lists him as a Meditation Teacher, but no guided sessions, spoken instruction, chant or mantra are documented. No spiritual tradition or teacher lineage is named either. The documented work is sound.

Judging it by close listening. It is designed to sit in the background. If you sit and focus on it, you are using it wrong.

When It Lands Hardest

The work began with Miles lying awake around 3am with a busy head, and that is where it fits best: nights when your mind won't switch off, or stretches of deep work where you need something steady that won't pull your attention. It can also serve as an unobtrusive backdrop for seated meditation or yoga, though it isn't sequenced around either. If you need true silence, even hand-built noise may feel too present.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Play pink noise from the Spotify page while you work, at low volume, for an hour.

Day 2: Play pink noise as you fall asleep. Note how long you stay aware of it.

Day 3: Switch to brown noise for work. Compare it with pink.

Day 4: Use brown noise at bedtime.

Day 5: Try white noise during work. Decide whether the brightness helps or grates.

Day 6: Read the studio notes at noise-foundation.com and compare them with your own impressions.

Day 7: Choose your colour, then listen to a different album in it. Judge whether the colour stays stable, how the grit is layered, and whether the drift stays subtle enough not to draw your attention. Follow the Spotify page if it earned a place in your routine.
