Mat Creedon is a Melbourne-based musician, teacher, composer, producer and sound practitioner. For over three decades he has offered a wide range of music services, both locally and internationally, as a music teacher, artist, composer, producer, music therapist, multi-instrumentalist and mixing and mastering engineer. He has also learned from many teachers, including Lama Tendar.
His true passion, he says, lies in music therapy: aiding people through listening, counselling and Sound Bath Meditations with Tibetan Singing Bowls. His sound baths draw on handpan, gong, singing bowls, drums, bells, vocal toning and tuning forks, and he records them in immersive 3D ambisonic audio, best heard on headphones. He shares them on his YouTube channel and in Afterbath, his podcast of reflections after the sound. He has also played in ensemble sound baths with crystal singing bowls and soprano clarinet under the name The Soma Ensemble.
He releases music under several aliases, including Mat Creedon, The Soma Ensemble, The Ribbon Device and Periscope. As a producer and mixing and mastering engineer he works with independent artists around the world, and he provides his compositions to filmmakers.
At the Mat Creedon School of Music in Balwyn North, he has taught privately for over 33 years, from age 4 to 100+, including total beginners, VCE students and exam candidates, with online lessons as well. He also helps students record their own compositions. His YouTube channel describes his work as exploring how sound shapes creativity, emotion and the nervous system: "Based in Melbourne. Open to the world."
Worth Knowing
Mat Creedon is a Melbourne-based musician, composer, producer and sound practitioner who has worked in music for over three decades, moving between private teaching, mixing and mastering, and sound healing. What draws serious listeners is the way the work refuses to sit in one lane: the same person releases a catalogue of short singles from 2019 to 2021, produces independent artists, licenses compositions to filmmakers, and leads sound bath meditations built on Tibetan singing bowls and handpan. His self-described true passion is music therapy, meaning listening sessions, counselling and bowl-based sound baths rather than conventional performance. The sound baths are recorded in immersive 3D ambisonic audio, the detail most newcomers mention first, and it works best on headphones. He teaches at the Mat Creedon School of Music in Balwyn North, from age 4 to 100+, so his students form a quieter audience for the same ideas. Anyone looking for a conventional touring singer-songwriter will find a different kind of career here, one built around the room and the ear rather than the stage.
