The Best Single Entry Point: Songs From A Quiet Time

Start with Songs From A Quiet Time, John Vegard Schow's 11-track album released on May 1, 2026. It is his most current statement of what he does, and it is the right place to begin because it presents the idea the rest of his work grows from: what he calls the quietness between the notes. Listen to it start to finish, in order, without skipping the sparse passages. That is where the music does most of its work.

The Next Three Places to Go

**1. *FOG - Lyrical pieces for piano.*** This is the solo piano side at its most concentrated. It debuted at #1 on the Norway iTunes classical chart, and it is the foundational record to compare everything else against.

**2. *Meistersaal Sessions.*** Recorded live in the Meistersaal in Berlin, this shows how much of the music depends on silence and timing. A live room makes the pacing audible in a way studio polish can hide.

**3. Blått hjerte (Blue Heart), with the Schow Trio.** This is the critically acclaimed record after which he let the piano speak on its own. Hearing his writing in an ensemble clarifies what the solo work chooses to leave out.

If you want a short test before committing to an album, the 2026 singles Now (April) and Etter (March) are quick listens. They work better as a second pass than a first.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect solo piano at a slow pace, with room left between phrases rather than every bar filled. Schow's bio places the music between pop, jazz and classical, so melodies tend to feel familiar on first hearing while the harmonic movement stays restrained. There are few climaxes. The calm is built from space, not from volume, lush swells or virtuosity.

His background matters here. He is a producer who has made music for other artists, for TV and for live shows, and he has composed for animated TV series sold to more than 180 countries. His YouTube channel reached about 100 million plays before he returned to piano. The recordings reward attention to the piano's decay and the room around it.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Treating it as background only. It works as ambient listening, but the stillness is the composition. Give it one attentive listen before you relegate it to the background.

Expecting a meditation method. His Insight Timer teacher page describes him as conveying meaning through instrumental music. The record names no formal lineage, teacher succession or guided practice. The music is the lesson, and it does not dictate what you should feel.

Expecting it all to be one thing. There is a devotional, church-music thread too, visible in the 2025 compilation Psalmförslag, Vol. 4: Kyrkliga handlingar and in Norwegian material such as Jeg Synger Julekvad. There is also an electronic side: the october mills rework of Lik Eit Tre (2025), though that is a reinterpretation and not the core sound.

Expecting energy. If you want rhythm-driven or high-BPM music, this will feel underpowered.

When This Work Lands Hardest

Many of the compositions grew out of questions like how we find peace amid our troubles and how we give peace a chance in our lives. That makes the music strongest when you are actually carrying something: a stretched season, an unsettled evening, a stretch when you need to slow down and don't know how. It also suits the end of a day, when you can listen without doing something else. It fits less well when you want to be energized or entertained.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Play Songs From A Quiet Time in full, in order, with nothing else going on.

Day 2: Revisit the two or three pieces that held your attention. Notice where the silences sit.

Day 3: Listen to FOG - Lyrical pieces for piano. Compare how the solo writing feels against the newer album.

Day 4: Try the singles Etter and Now, then the lively contrast of Pianovalse.

Day 5: Play the Meistersaal Sessions and pay attention to timing and room sound.

Day 6: Hear Blått hjerte with the Schow Trio, and note what the ensemble adds.

Day 7: Return to Songs From A Quiet Time and see what has changed since Day 1.

No live dates are currently recorded, so follow his Spotify page or check schow.org for announcements.
