Jason Armstrong Baker is a Licensed Professional Music Therapist (LPMT) and board-certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) based in Baltimore, Maryland. He has more than 30 years as a percussive artist and has facilitated over 5,000 group drumming sessions. He has been a student of rhythm since he was 7, and has played in bands, on stages, in studios and in circles. In his own words, he didn't set out to become a music therapist. He set out to be a drummer, and found himself in the offering of music for healing.
His approach is to meet people where they are and help them find the rhythm already inside them. He works with corporate teams, people living with Parkinson's disease, veterans, students and neighborhood communities. His rhythm-based team workshops use group drumming to build communication, trust and collaboration, and no musical experience is needed. He leads Rx for Rhythm, a free music therapy group for people with Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, sponsored by Johns Hopkins Center for Music & Medicine. He also specializes in neurologic music therapy for people living with Parkinson's and Huntington's disease.
In 2024 he co-authored a peer-reviewed study on group drumming and Parkinson's disease in the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, with Dr. Alexander Pantelyat. His work has been recognized by Johns Hopkins Center for Music & Medicine, the Veterans Affairs Administration, The Baltimore Station and Towson University. He has served clients across Maryland, and virtually nationwide, since 2006.
