Girish's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

The Shape of a Gathering

Girish's work is built around a simple structure: he sings a phrase in Sanskrit, and the room sings it back. Everything else grows from that exchange. Whether the setting is a drop-in circle, live music alongside a yoga class, a workshop, or a multi-day chant camp, the unit of the practice is the call and the response. The format is participatory by design, and it asks something of the people in the room. It is not background music, and a listener who sits back and waits to be entertained will find little to hold onto.

The longer formats add layers. His retreats are built around chant, rhythm, breath and shared singing, and a Sacred Choir sits at their center. By his account, every voice is welcome there, and the group's response becomes the heartbeat of the practice. No musical experience is required. For those who want more, the retreats offer simple guidance on harmonium, guitar, drums and keyboard. The sound is anchored by his voice, harmonium and tabla.

The pacing is unhurried. A single mantra loops and evolves over many minutes, with the tabla setting a cyclical rhythm. Newcomers should not expect a dramatic arc or an emotional climax. The repetition is the point.

Recurring Themes

The idea his site returns to is that music and mantra are a path to joy, healing and freedom, and that these come from giving voice to what lives within us. The emphasis falls on expression rather than acquisition: the claim is that something is already present and needs a channel.

A second theme is the collective. Girish positions the community, not the leader, as the engine of the practice. This is a deliberate stance against the cult of the expert, and it shapes how he presents himself: as a facilitator of a shared act rather than a performer delivering an experience to an audience.

A third is the connection between voice, vibration and the senses more broadly. His work extends into sound healing through Attuned Soundscapes, which are customized soundscapes tuned to a person's own singing bowls. It also extends into Saraswati Muse, an essential oil blend he envisioned and blended as an ode to the Goddess of Creative Flow and Soulful Wisdom. Both suggest he thinks about devotion and healing across more than one channel, though the sources do not describe how he frames these in teaching.

The Questions He Asks Students to Sit With

The sources do not record Girish's words in a way that lets us quote him, so what follows is inferred from the structure of the practice rather than reported. The format itself poses the questions. What happens when you stop evaluating your own voice and simply add it to the room? What lives within you that has not been given sound? What changes when you are one voice in a choir rather than the audience for one?

For many people, the hard part is not the Sanskrit but the permission. Group singing exposes people, and the practice asks them to stay with that exposure long enough for it to shift. The multi-day format matters here, since the same mantras deepen with repeated exposure over days.

Aesthetic of Delivery

The delivery is plain. His voice is described as clear and grounded, without melismatic ornament or high-register showboating. The instrumentation is traditional: harmonium and tabla with the voice. The grounding in Indian classical rhythmic structure sets it apart from more pop-inflected or New Age mantra music.

The material is scripture in the sense that the texts are Sanskrit mantras from Hindu devotional tradition, sung rather than explained. The available sources say nothing about whether Girish uses humor, spoken story or extended silence in his sessions, and it would be dishonest to supply them. What can be said is that the aesthetic favors repetition over narrative and participation over spectacle.

Who It Lands For, and Who May Not Connect

It lands most readily for people who want to sing without being judged on singing: yoga practitioners, first-timers curious about kirtan, and those drawn to communal ritual. Because the barrier to entry is low, a drop-in circle asks for nothing but willingness.

It will likely frustrate several kinds of listener. Those who want instrumental virtuosity, high-energy or electronic music, or secular wellness sound may find it too devotional and ritualistic. People who feel anxious singing in groups may struggle, as may those who regard Sanskrit chanting as cultural tourism. The practice also demands presence, which not everyone wants to give. Multi-day camps and retreats require time and money that put them out of reach for many. The sources also note no major press coverage or awards; his standing rests on his live work and a following of over 23,000 on Spotify.

Tradition

Girish works within kirtan, the call-and-response tradition of Hindu devotional chanting built around Sanskrit mantras, harmonium, tabla and voice. The bio and sources name no specific teacher, guru or lineage for him, and none should be assumed. Kirtan itself is described as non-dogmatic and belonging to no single sect. His approach aligns with contemporary kirtan leaders who have brought the practice into yoga studios and retreat settings, but the sources name none of them.

His next confirmed appearance is at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on December 29, 2026.
