Dr. Lillian Nejad is a clinical psychologist and author with 25 years of experience working with adults with mental health concerns. Her passion throughout her career has been to help people build a life worth living. She has worked in public mental health services, universities, private practice, and community and corporate organizations.
She founded Skills for Life, which offers science-based skills and strategies to help people reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, strengthen mental health and gain confidence in coping with life's ups and downs. Her mission, in her words, is to give people access to quality mental health and well-being tools, programs and resources that empower them to make positive changes at home and at work. She is also the founder of Contain Your Brain.
Lillian is the author of "Treating Stress and Anxiety: A Practitioner's Guide to Evidence-Based Approaches" (2008), a book for mental health professionals. She also wrote "Relaxation: Techniques to Reduce Anxiety and Stress, and Enhance Well-Being" (2008), a set of seven relaxation exercises, and "Lifeblockers, the Sleep Edition" (2018), a book on evidence-based strategies for overcoming insomnia. She also writes mindfulness and relaxation exercises.
Her commentary has appeared in The Leadership Review, MINDFOOD magazine, Women's Health & Fitness and The Sydney Morning Herald. She was resident psychologist on SEN+ "That Radio Show", where her "Lifeblockers" segment introduced mental health skills to Australian and UK listeners. She also made the limited series podcast "Life Skills for Leaders" with Daniel Hakim, CEO of CUB, on mental health issues that affect the workplace.
Born and raised in the U.S., Lillian moved to Melbourne in her early 20s. She loves the arts and serves on the Advisory Board of the Antipodes Theatre Company in Melbourne.
Worth Knowing
Dr. Lillian Nejad is a clinical psychologist and author with more than 25 years of experience across public mental health, workplaces, and private practice. She founded Contain Your Brain, a worry app that is free to use and built around practical tools for managing anxiety. Her body of work includes books on stress, anxiety, and sleep, several online audio and video self-help programs, and relaxation and mindfulness albums, many of which are featured on Insight Timer. She also consults on workplace well-being and hosts the podcast Life Skills for Leaders, which helps business owners address mental health at work. Her appeal is the evidence-based angle: she frames meditation and mindfulness as skills to learn and practice, not as a spiritual path. Readers who care about the science behind stress, focus, and insomnia tend to follow her, and the free app is a low-cost way to test her approach. Her stated mission is to improve access to science-backed psychological tools that suit different learning styles.
