Don Reed Simmons's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

The Shape of a Session

Don Reed Simmons teaches across several modalities, so there is no single format that defines his work. A mindfulness or loving-kindness session is likely to be quiet and instruction-led. A sound session with Tibetan or crystal bowls is largely non-verbal, and the experience is bodily rather than conceptual. His shamanic teaching, "The Shamans Path to Awakened Living," which he has taught since 2005, is structured as a program rather than a one-off event. The available material describes it as a curriculum that does not require prior shamanic experience.

The published sources describe his style more by inference than by observation. They suggest a grounded, pragmatic presence, shaped by years as a crisis counselor, and a preference for the student's direct experience over lengthy explanation. That should be read as an informed expectation, not a firsthand account. Anyone deciding whether to attend should listen to his recordings first, since his YouTube channel hosts talks and guided meditations that show his voice before any commitment.

Recurring Themes

Compassion, beginning with compassion toward oneself, is the thread that runs through everything. Simmons ties it to his own history: a childhood on a Southern farm, two serious illnesses, and the animals and people around him. He describes that period as the source of his compassionate outlook toward himself and others. The teaching does not promise that practice dissolves difficulty. It aims at a different relationship with suffering.

Mindfulness and loving-kindness are the most direct expressions of this, and he has also led meditations on Ho'oponopono, the Hawaiian practice of reconciliation. Sound is a further theme. Through the Sacred Sound Ministry, which he created within the International Sound Therapy Association, he teaches sound as a prayerful, healing modality, treating vibration as a way into the body rather than a decoration for meditation. Underneath these runs an insistence that practice should change how a person lives and relates to others.

The Questions He Pushes

The sources do not record specific questions he poses, and none should be invented here. The themes imply the territory, though. How do you treat yourself when you are in pain? What would it mean to hold real care for a difficult person without sentimentality? What is the relationship between the part of you that is suffering and the part that watches? In the shamanic work, the implied question is one of direction and relationship: what is asking to be seen, and what do you owe to what you find? These are readings of the material, not quotations.

Delivery: Silence, Story, Sound

Simmons does not appear to be a performer of spiritual depth. The material describes him as pragmatic about what works and what does not. Silence and sound carry much of the weight in his sessions, and the bowls do work that words would otherwise do. Story has a place, too. He spent almost thirty years in film and video, including producing the docu-series "Mystic Lands," and that background suggests a trained sense of narrative and economy. His own biography, including the near-fatal scuba dive in Hawaii in the 1970s and the later meditation in which a Hawaiian kahuna became his teacher and spirit guide, is the foundational story behind the shamanic work.

Humor and scripture are not documented in the sources, so it would be dishonest to describe them. What can be said is that his register is ceremonial in the shamanic work and plain-spoken in the mindfulness work.

Who It Lands For, and Who May Bounce Off

It is likely to suit people who come through the body or through sound rather than through sitting practice, newcomers to meditation, and those who want clinical and contemplative frameworks held side by side. People drawn to compassion-centered practice, and not to performance or productivity, will find the emphasis congenial.

It is less likely to suit those who want a single, unmixed tradition, whether pure Zen or only secular MBSR. His combination of mindfulness, shamanic journeying and past-life regression, for which Dr. Brian Weiss certified him in 2009, will put off committed materialists, and the sources suggest he does not offer a secular reframing of those elements. People seeking rapid stress reduction may find the emphasis on loving-kindness and reconciliation slow. Those who find sustained tones difficult may not do well in sound sessions. And anyone wanting a teacher with a large published catalog will have to look for him; his public footprint is modest.

The Wider Tradition

Simmons does not claim one lineage. The bio names the teachers and influences it names: he has studied with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and with Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. A Hawaiian kahuna became his teacher and spirit guide in meditation, and that experience underlies his shamanic teaching. Dr. Brian Weiss certified him in Past Life Regression. He has been a clinical hypnotherapist since 1993, and he leads the International Sound Therapy Association as president. He has performed with Steven Halpern and Jonn Serrie, and has spoken at Emory University and Kennesaw State University.

The result is a practice assembled from several sources rather than inherited from one. His strength is range, with clinical and contemplative work and crisis counseling in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Honolulu behind it. The cost is that someone looking for the depth and discipline of a single tradition may find the whole less focused than its parts. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on what the student came to find.
