DJ Slipmatt

DJ Slipmatt is a DJ and producer known as the "Godfather of Rave", a name his own biography says he earned over three decades rather than gave himself.

By his own account he picked up his first record at eighteen months old, bought one at four and played his first gig at his school disco at ten. At twelve he had a collection of 2 Tone, soul and reggae records. At fourteen he was playing parties and making his own tracks, splicing tapes and experimenting with samples. He later took a blend of house and hip hop to the DMC mixing competition, where Carl Cox and DJ Hype also competed.

With his friend DJ Lime he set up the pirate station Raw FM. In mid-1989 the pair formed the production duo SL2 with MC Jay J. Their first record, "Do That Dance", came out on B/WARE Records. By early 1991 they had started their own label, Awesome Records, and the releases that followed included "The Noise / Bassquake" and "DJs Take Control / Way In My Brain". SL2 are also known for "On A Ragga Tip", a 1992 UK hit.

Slipmatt has played at thousands of raves and clubs around the world and presented his own radio shows on KISS 100. His World of Rave rooms bring old skool sounds to the dancefloor. His sets mix new beats with classic rave sounds, and he says that if music sounds great and keeps a crowd dancing, it is worth playing, whatever the genre.
