Where to Start with Curawaka: A Beginner's Guide

Curawaka describes its sound as "sacred world music": a way of connecting the new with the ancient, and the open, searching mind with the ritual and spiritual. The band was founded by Norwegian vocalist and songwriter Anna Bariyani, and its members come from Norway, Mexico and Argentina. If you are new to them, here is how to approach the work without getting lost.

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with Call of the Wild, the debut album on Nixi Music. It introduced songs such as "Noku Mana," "Te Nande" and "He Yama Yo," and it shows the core formula most clearly: Bariyani's voice moving between indigenous-language lyrics while charango, quena and sikuri flutes carry the ceremonial rhythm over guitars, bass and percussion. The debut also establishes the vocal and instrumental vocabulary that later releases build on, so hearing it first makes everything after it easier to read. Listen to it start to finish, with attention, rather than as background.

The Next Three Places to Go

Dreamtime (2023). Ten tracks showing how the sound developed after the band's years of touring. Play it right after the debut and notice what has grown.

OLOKUN (2025). The natural step if you are drawn to healing and balance, since it calls on the sacred feminine forces of the sea. The discography lists it as a single rather than an album, so approach it as a focused piece.

Dreamtime Remixes (2026). Five tracks, released September 16, 2026, with reworkings by several producers. Treat it as a separate listening session. If you want a short test first, try the single "Shamboriri," which has a 2022 original and a J. Pool remix.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect a voice-led sound. Bariyani's singing is full and projected, not whispered or hushed, and it sits at the front of the mix. She sings in seven languages: Hatcha Kuin, Yawanawa, Sami, Spanish, Portuguese, English and Norwegian. Translations are not part of the profile, so many lyrics will arrive without a literal meaning. Let the sound and the rhythm do the first work. The Andean instruments are not decorative color here; they carry real weight alongside the voice.

Behind the recordings is a band that has spent years living with and learning from indigenous communities and has studied for many years with the Wixarika people. After nearly a decade on the road, with hundreds of live performances and two world tours, Curawaka is a seasoned live act. The band also leads retreats and workshops on voice, medicine music and what it calls weaving voice and spirit.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Treating it as ambient background music. The original recordings ask for attention. If you want something that fades into the room, this is not it.

Assuming it belongs to one spiritual lineage. It does not. Curawaka's own framing is a cross-cultural practice built on study, collaboration and respect for indigenous traditions. The most clearly documented thread is the long study with the Wixarika people, but no single teacher or line of transmission is named. Describe it as a body of work shaped by sustained relationships, not a formal tradition.

Expecting dance music because of the remixes. Some remixes, notably the Nils Olav and J. Pool versions, move toward electronic territory. They reinterpret the songs and do not represent the core sound.

Expecting a vocal technique class. The workshops center on voice, medicine music and ritual, so they suit people interested in sacred chant and sound healing more than conventional singing instruction.

When This Work Lands Hardest

The profile does not tie the work to specific life stages, so this is an informed reading rather than a claim. The music tends to reward people who can sit with a sustained ceremonial vocal line without needing it to resolve quickly: those seeking a slower, more attentive kind of listening, or drawn to ritual, healing and the natural world. Skeptics of sacred or ceremonial vocabulary will likely feel distanced, because the spiritual framing is central. It is also strongest live. The band's reach extends from concert stages into voice and ceremonial settings, and the only upcoming date in the profile is at Aito Resort in Rovaniemi, Finland, on March 24, 2027. Check curawaka.com before planning travel.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Listen to Call of the Wild in full, with no other tasks. Note which of "Noku Mana," "Te Nande" and "He Yama Yo" pulls you most.

Day 2: Replay those three songs. Pick out the charango, quena and sikuri flutes, then follow the percussion underneath.

Day 3: Listen to Dreamtime (2023) in full. Compare the textures with the debut.

Day 4: Rest from the band, or revisit your favorite track from Dreamtime.

Day 5: Play OLOKUN, ideally in a quiet, deliberate setting, since its theme is healing and balance.

Day 6: Listen to the original "Shamboriri," then the J. Pool remix. Then play Dreamtime Remixes and notice what changes when producers reshape the material.

Day 7: Visit curawaka.com to see the retreats, workshops and any live dates. Merchandise sales there support the Curawaka Alliance Fund, the band's most concrete named link to indigenous communities. Decide whether you want to go deeper into the recordings, the workshops or a live show.
