OLOKUN by Curawaka: A Listening Guide

A note on format before anything else: OLOKUN, released September 25, 2025, is listed as a single with one track, not a full-length album. This guide treats it as a deep dive into that one piece of music, and it names no other tracks because none exist in the release data.

Where It Sits in Curawaka's Arc

Curawaka is an international sacred world music band, formed by artists from Norway, Mexico and Argentina and founded by Norwegian vocalist and songwriter Anna Bariyani. By the time OLOKUN arrived, the band had nearly a decade on the road, hundreds of live performances and two world tours behind it. The catalogue runs from the debut Call of the Wild through Dreamtime (2023), and OLOKUN follows as a 2025 release that turns toward a specific theme: calling on the sacred feminine forces of the sea for healing and balance.

For listeners moving through the discography in release order, OLOKUN is the step that narrows the focus. Where the earlier albums survey a wide range of songs and languages, this release concentrates on a single invocation. The remix program that followed in 2026 came after it, which makes OLOKUN one of the last original statements before the catalogue began to be reshaped by producers.

Sonic Character

Curawaka's sound is vocal-led. Anna Bariyani sings in seven languages, including Hatcha Kuin, Yawanawa, Sami, Spanish, Portuguese, English and Norwegian, and her voice is full and projected rather than hushed. Expect a voice that carries real weight, not a whispered devotional murmur.

Around the voice sit the instruments the band is known for: charango, quena and sikuri flutes, guitars, bass and a range of ceremonial percussion. Textures tend to be built from melodic line and rhythm rather than dense layered chords. The Andean winds and strings are structural rather than decorative, and the percussion provides the pulse beneath the singing.

The release data does not specify tempo, language of the lyrics or detailed arrangement, so I will not guess at them. What the band's stated purpose for the piece suggests is a ceremonial mood: an invocation rather than a pop song, asking for attention instead of fading into the room.

The Track Worth Naming

There is one: OLOKUN, the title piece. What makes it the thing to hear is its clarity of intent. The band describes the work as calling on the sacred feminine forces of the sea, and a single-track release lets that idea stand without competing material. If you want to know what Curawaka sounds like when it commits fully to one ritual theme, this is the shortest route.

Its Place in the Tradition

Curawaka does not belong to a single spiritual lineage, and this guide will not assign one. The most clearly documented thread is the band's many years of study with the Wixarika people, alongside time living with and learning from indigenous communities. The band's repertoire and workshops engage shamanism, ceremony and shamanic drumming, which places the work closer to medicine music and sacred chant than to conventional concert folk.

That makes OLOKUN a cousin of devotional and chant traditions rather than a member of any one of them. It is not bhakti or kirtan in the strict sense, and it is not ambient music. It is cross-cultural ceremonial song, built from sustained relationships with source traditions, and the band supports those communities through the Curawaka Alliance Fund, which receives merchandise sales.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This release lands most strongly for listeners drawn to healing and balance, and for anyone already working with voice, ritual or sound healing who wants a recording that treats those ideas seriously. It suits a person in a period of transition or emotional tide, someone who wants an invocation rather than background sound.

It is less suited to listeners who want high-BPM electronic music, purely ambient texture with no vocal focus, or English-only lyrics. Skeptics of sacred or ceremonial vocabulary will probably feel distanced, since the spiritual framing is central rather than ornamental. The honest test is whether you can sit with a sustained ceremonial vocal line without needing it to resolve quickly.

How to Listen

Give it your full attention at least once. Headphones will bring out the interplay between the projected voice and the flutes and percussion, and an evening setting, quiet and uninterrupted, suits the invocational intent. Because the vocal intensity is strong rather than soft, audition it before building it into a meditation or yoga practice, and treat it as a companion to ceremonial work, not a replacement for it.

Because it is a single, the experience is short, so consider listening twice: once simply to take in the voice and rhythm, and once with the theme of the sea and sacred feminine in mind. Then, if the sound draws you in, move to Dreamtime for a longer session, and to the 2026 remix collection when you want to hear the material reshaped.
