Dreamtime (Ida Engberg Remix) by Curawaka: A Listening Guide

This is a single-track release, not an album, so the "deep dive" here is a close look at one reinterpretation. It arrived on August 14, 2026, as one of the singles in Curawaka's remix program, and it helps to know what it reworks and where it sits in the band's story.

Where This Sits in Curawaka's Arc

Curawaka is an international sacred world music band founded by Norwegian vocalist and songwriter Anna Bariyani, with musicians from Norway, Mexico and Argentina. After nearly a decade on the road, hundreds of live performances and two world tours, the band's catalogue has begun to turn back on itself. The original Dreamtime album came out in 2023 with ten tracks. In 2026 the band opened that material to outside producers, and the results gathered into the Dreamtime Remixes album, released September 16, 2026, with singles arriving between August and September.

Ida Engberg's remix is one of those singles. It is best heard as a late-career chapter: a band with a settled vocabulary handing it to a producer to see what shifts.

Sonic Character

I'll be plain about the limits here. The profile does not describe this remix's tempo, structure or production choices, so what follows is what Curawaka's sound is built from and what a remix program like this tends to do with it.

The band's core palette is Anna Bariyani's powerful, projected lead voice, with charango, quena, sikuri flutes, guitars, bass and a range of percussion beneath her. Ceremonial rhythm provides the pulse. The remix program is described as pulling the material toward club-adjacent listening, so expect the original's ceremonial architecture to be reframed rather than preserved intact. Whether the lead vocal stays as prominent as it is in the original is something to listen for yourself.

What to Listen For

Because this is a single, there is one track to name: "Dreamtime (Ida Engberg Remix)" itself. What makes it worth attention:

  • The voice against a new frame. Curawaka's voice carries unusual weight for this kind of music. Hearing it inside a producer's rhythmic setting shows how much of the song lives in the melody and how much in the arrangement.
  • The Andean instruments. In the originals, charango, quena and sikuri flutes are not decorative. Listen for whether they remain structural or recede into texture.
  • The pulse. Ceremonial percussion is the band's foundation. A remix can translate that into a different kind of groove, and the shift is the main event.

For comparison, the 2023 original and the other remixes on Dreamtime Remixes are the obvious reference points.

Place in the Tradition

Curawaka does not belong to a single spiritual lineage. Its own framing is a cross-cultural practice built on study, collaboration and respect for indigenous traditions, with the most documented thread being many years of study with the Wixarika people. The band's work sits closer to medicine music and sacred chant than to conventional concert folk, and its repertoire and workshops engage with shamanism, ceremonies and shamanic drumming.

A remix by Ida Engberg extends that practice into electronic territory. It is unusual for a sacred music project to open itself this way, and it makes this release a bridge between ceremonial and club-adjacent listening rather than a devotional record in the strict sense. It is not bhakti or kirtan, and the profile makes no such claim.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This suits listeners who already know the original Dreamtime and are curious how it travels. It also suits people who came to Curawaka through remixes and want a way into the band's sound, and listeners who like sacred or ceremonial vocals but want more movement than the originals offer.

It is likely a poorer fit for those who want purely ambient background sound, since the band's voice-forward approach asks for attention. Listeners who want high-BPM dance music should also note that the remixes reinterpret the songs rather than represent the band's core sound. Lyrics may arrive in languages other than English, and translations are not part of the profile.

In terms of life moment, it suits someone who wants ceremonial energy in motion: a walk, a commute, or a long evening of work.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Start with the original Dreamtime track, then play the Ida Engberg remix straight after, on headphones, in one sitting. The contrast does the teaching. On the second pass, follow one element at a time: first the voice, then the flutes and charango, then the percussion. If you're curious about the wider remix program, move on to Dreamtime Remixes as its own session, as the band's catalogue guidance suggests, rather than mixing it in with the originals.

Listen once without distraction. This is music that rewards a listener willing to sit with a sustained vocal line.
