Andrew Jan is a Taoist teacher of Tai Chi, Qigong and internal alchemy based in Margaret River, Western Australia. He is a Senior Instructor and Branch Leader for Internal Alchemy within the Universal Healing Tao system, and he serves as the Global Leader for its Internal Martial Arts division. His Insight Timer teacher page describes more than three decades of teaching Taoist arts and names him as the author of five books on Taoist philosophy and practice.
Andrew has trained in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Bagua Zhang and Xing Yi Quan for many decades, and he has taught internal martial arts in Australia and internationally. He was the 1984 Full Contact All Styles Lightweight Champion, and in 2000 he became Australian National Tai Chi Wushu Champion Over 40, placing first in the Wu Style, Yang Style and Weapons divisions. He is the co-author of several instructional works, among them Tai Chi Fa Jin, Tai Chi Wu Style, The Practice of Greater Kan and Li and The Practice of Greatest Kan and Li, and his site also notes work with Mantak Chia on Tai Chi.
Alongside his Taoist work, Andrew has had a long professional career in emergency medicine, acupuncture and education. His postgraduate qualifications include a Master's thesis exploring Taoist and Christian mysticism and a PhD examining the use of acupuncture within the Emergency Department. He holds an appointment as Adjunct Clinical Professor with the School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia. He keeps this career separate from his Taoist teaching, but it has shaped his emphasis on scholarship, diligence, ethics and participant safety within the internal arts. He also describes a lasting connection to the poetry of William Blake, and the "Mission" section of his About page is inspired by Blake's Jerusalem.
Over the last two decades his work has focused increasingly on advanced inner alchemy, the Sealing of the Five Senses, ecstatic spirit flight, and the integration of Heaven and Earth within the human being. He teaches the higher meditation practices of the Universal Healing Tao system, from Fusion of the Five Elements through Lesser, Greater and Greatest Kan and Li. He also teaches Formula 8, Ecstatic Spirit Flight – The Congress of Heaven and Earth, which moves through the Nine Cauldrons, from the Earth Cauldron and the Solar System Cauldron to True Yang in the North Celestial Pole and True Yin in the South Celestial Pole, then on to the Final Cauldron. He teaches the mythical Qilin as a symbol of wisdom, harmony and safe return. He offers classes and workshops, online video courses, guided meditations and a podcast. He also offers private mentorship in advanced Taoist practices for dedicated students.
His YouTube channel shares traditional Tai Chi and Qigong training for stability, vitality and a calm mind. It includes Tai Chi hand and cane sequences, Qigong for health, nature connection and restoration, and teaching on internal mechanics and martial principles. The channel describes these arts as the foundation for deeper Taoist internal work. He is currently completing two books on advanced Taoist practice, Ecstatic Flight and The Grand Completion.
His teaching emphasises grounding, safety, gradual development and the harmonious return of higher states into ordinary life. On his workshops page he writes that mastering Tai Chi and Chi Kung "is about turning the senses inwardly and identifying the myriad of feelings (forces) in the body." Student Khulan Gantsog writes on his site that she practised the Lesser, Greater and Greatest Kan and Li with him and found his guidance clear and patient. His material is educational and contemplative, and it is not medical advice.
