The American Meditation Society (AMS) is a non-profit, non-sectarian educational organization founded in 1976 and devoted to the spiritual teachings of Gururaj Ananda Yogi (1932–1988). It is organized and maintained on a volunteer basis by its members. Its mission is to provide instruction in meditation as Gururaj taught it, and to preserve and share his teachings with integrity and wisdom.
At the heart of the teaching is what Gururaj called the "path of unfoldment": the idea that everything a person needs is already inside, and that meditation lets it emerge. AMS describes meditation as a simple, effortless way of connecting with the silence and peace within. It says meditation is not a religion and requires no particular belief system, and that it can complement a person's own faith.
Personalization is what AMS says sets it apart. Practices are individually prescribed and taught, from beginner instruction to advanced techniques. Introductory classes teach a balanced set of practices, including breath, mantra and focused visualization, with attention to correct technique and to becoming the observer of one's thoughts. The wider offerings include mantra meditation for relaxation and candle meditation for focus. Individual practices, which include a personalized mantra, are taught by Level II instructors. Instruction is given in weekly classes or on retreats.
Trained teachers are found across the United States, and AMS teachers also visit schools, clubs, companies and retirement communities. Teachers are certified through live online courses, team teaching with an experienced teacher, a four-day onsite training retreat, and a year of mentoring. AMS belongs to a worldwide family of independent societies, linked through the International Foundation for Spiritual Unfoldment, that teach Gururaj's method.
Worth Knowing
American Meditation Society is a volunteer-run nonprofit founded in 1976 to preserve and teach the meditation methods of Gururaj Ananda Yogi, a contemporary spiritual teacher who shaped how meditation is understood and practiced across the West. What distinguishes AMS from generic meditation apps or loosely affiliated teachers is its commitment to structured, personalized instruction—each student receives an individually prescribed mantra and tailored techniques rather than one-size-fits-all guidance. The organization operates through a network of certified teachers spanning the United States, each trained through a rigorous apprenticeship combining live courses, team teaching, and a four-day residential retreat. People are drawn to AMS not because it promises transformation or spiritual fireworks, but because it positions meditation as something practical and grounded: a way to access the silence and peace already within, without requiring belief in any particular religion or dogma. The organization's work in schools, corporate settings, and retirement communities reflects a particular philosophy—that meditation is a secular skill available to anyone. AMS is also connected to an international network of meditation societies through the International Foundation for Spiritual Unfoldment, giving it lineage weight and institutional stability unusual for meditation organizations born after the 1960s.
