[0:07] Om Asatoma Sadgamaya Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya
Mrityurma Amritam Gamaya Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
[0:31] Om lead us from the unreal
to the real, lead us from darkness
[0:39] to light,
lead us from death to immortality.
[0:44] Om Peace Peace Peace. Namaste,
good morning and welcome.
[0:53] Durga Puja which is one
of the greatest religious festivities
[0:59] of India.
[1:03] I had an interesting experience
yesterday in the evening.
[1:08] I attended Durga Puja in Times Square.
[1:12] And Times Square
was very Times Square yesterday.
[1:16] All light and people and costumes
and I mean there was Durga Puja
[1:21] but there was also King Kong
and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
[1:27] And you know, the thought was
that is it appropriate to have
[1:32] Durga Puja in the middle of Times Square?
[1:35] Then I was reminded of one
of the components of Durga Puja
[1:40] which is actually in the Sanskrit text
describing Durga Puja.
[1:44] It is something called Sabar Utsav.
[1:47] Sabar Utsav, you know Durga Puja,
the tenth day, Dashami,
[1:52] when the image is immersed.
[1:54] And then after that, the text
says there should be Sabar Utsav.
[1:59] What is Sabar Utsav?
[1:59] And it describes in detail.
[2:01] All the children of the mother
dressed in colorful costumes.
[2:06] They will come in a parade, in a group
and they will be throwing flowers.
[2:10] And they will sing and they will dance.
[2:14] And they will call out
to each other joyously.
[2:17] And they will shout and yell at each other
and the words, it is all described there.
[2:22] They are not very scriptural words
to say the least, to put it politely.
[2:28] And it is prescribed
[2:29] and it says that the Devi will be Rushdha,
will be annoyed, she will be miffed
[2:33] if this component is missed out.
[2:35] If you stop this from happening.
[2:40] Ma Sharada, Durga Puja in Belur Math.
[2:43] She was there, Durga Puja in Belur Math
and the image was immersed in the Ganga
[2:48] as it is done even now, every time.
[2:51] And after the immersion, the monks,
the devotees, there is music
[2:58] and they dance in front of the image
before the immersion,
[3:02] just before the immersion.
[3:04] And it is a special dance called
Dhoorichi Nritta, which is with pots
[3:09] with smoke
coming out of them and you dance.
[3:13] It is a little difficult actually.
[3:16] So there was one doctor
who was a great devotee, Dr. Kanjilal.
[3:19] And he was dancing,
but he was really into the dance.
[3:25] And the devotees felt a little annoyed.
[3:28] They said, they complained to the mother,
this is not appropriate,
[3:31] this is inappropriate.
[3:32] After all, it's a sacred festival
and you shouldn't dance like
[3:37] this in front of the Devi.
[3:41] She said to the contrary, no,
it should be done
[3:45] because the Devi likes it.
[3:47] She is pleased by it.
[3:49] This is Sabar utsav.
[3:50] She didn't say Sabar utsav,
but that's what she meant.
[3:53] She validated it.
[3:55] So yesterday I thought,
Times Square is Nitya Sabar utsav.
[4:01] Perpetually the Sabar utsav, that festival
is going on day
[4:05] and night there, especially at night.
[4:07] So that's fine.
[4:08] That's perfectly fine.
[4:10] Durga Puja is one
of the greatest religious festivals,
[4:16] occasions in Hinduism.
[4:18] The ancient Hindus,
Hindus always have been very ritualistic.
[4:22] The ancient Hindus,
their main religion was ritualism.
[4:27] You might say, isn't it Vedanta?
[4:28] No, no, no, not really.
[4:30] This is marginal.
[4:32] The real religion at that time in India,
if you go there,
[4:35] you'll find these elaborate fire rituals.
[4:38] The Homa, the Yajnya, the fire ritual
and nothing dies in Hinduism.
[4:43] It still continues.
[4:44] So if there is a big puja, big ritual,
there will always be a Homa,
[4:49] a fire ritual associated with it.
[4:51] In Durga Puja, for example, Navami,
ninth day, there is a Homa, a fire ritual.
[4:57] And ancient India was not about temples,
not even about images, but there were
[5:04] elaborate fire rituals, Yajnya.
[5:05] And the greatest
of those elaborate fire rituals,
[5:08] the most massive, expensive,
complicated was the Ashwamedha Yajnya.
[5:15] All that is obsolete now.
[5:17] You won't find anybody
doing an Ashwamedha Yajnya now.
[5:21] It is said that those rituals
do not give results
[5:24] in Kali Yuga, in the age of Kali.
[5:27] They have been replaced in Hinduism.
[5:29] Hinduism has moved on from there
over the last, I would say,
[5:32] two to three thousand years.
[5:35] Hinduism has become more
about worship of the deities.
[5:39] And those are the puja, what we do,
what we call puja, what you just saw.
[5:43] If you were here earlier,
you just saw puja.
[5:46] Now, why am I saying this?
[5:49] What compares to the Ashwamedha Yajnya
of the Vedic times,
[5:55] the greatest fire ritual of Vedic times,
the comparable ritual
[6:00] today is the Durga Puja.
[6:02] That is
why Durga Puja is called Maha Puja.
[6:05] Maha Puja, the great puja.
[6:06] It is the greatest
of all rituals existing practice now.
[6:11] And each of the days,
we know, we say Maha Ashtami.
[6:14] Today, for example, is actually Saptami.
[6:17] Maha Ashtami, Shasti, Saptami,
Ashtami, Navami, Dashami.
[6:21] These are the days of the puja.
[6:25] And we say Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami.
[6:28] But it is also true to say Maha Saptami.
[6:30] Often it is not said,
but it is actually Maha Saptami also.
[6:34] So, it is the greatest of these rituals.
[6:37] And most elaborate, most, very revered.
[6:42] Each part of India, each strain
of Hinduism has its own central ritual.
[6:47] So, in the western part of India,
we see just before the Durga Puja,
[6:50] there is the Ganesha Puja.
[6:52] Which is the western part of India,
Maharashtra and Gujarat
[6:55] and many other places.
[6:56] Ganesha Puja,
Karnataka, Ganesha Puja is huge.
[6:59] It is like the Durga Puja.
[7:01] Just like that in the eastern part
of India, in Bengal, Durga Puja
[7:05] is the corresponding kind of Maha Puja.
[7:08] But Durga Puja
is celebrated all over India.
[7:11] So, in Ganesha Puja is over
in Mumbai, it is now full of Durga Puja.
[7:15] But the Bengali Durga Puja
has its own flavor.
[7:18] It is the central part of Bengali culture.
[7:23] Worship of the Divine Mother.
[7:24] Yesterday I was saying in Times Square,
that in Hinduism, any question you ask,
[7:28] the answer is always yes and no.
[7:31] Is God male?
[7:33] Do Hindus believe in God?
[7:35] Yes.
[7:35] No.
[7:37] There are orthodox strains of Hinduism
like Sankhya and Yoga,
[7:41] even the Purva Mimamsa, which do not,
either they are agnostic about God
[7:44] or they don't believe in God.
[7:47] And yes, of course, Hindus believe in God.
[7:50] Look.
[7:51] And is God male?
[7:54] Yes and no.
[7:57] Look, God is proudly female.
[8:00] The most ancient forms of worship of God
in Hinduism has been Mother worship.
[8:06] I remember as school students,
we used to study about
[8:09] the Indus Valley Civilization.
[8:10] Now it is called
the Saraswati Civilization.
[8:13] There,
one of the oldest archaeological artifacts
[8:17] recovered was
the figurine of the Mother Goddess.
[8:19] The worship of the Mother Goddess.
[8:20] And that goes back 5000 plus years.
[8:23] So God is worshipped as female.
[8:25] God is worshipped in
human forms, in non-human forms.
[8:30] Form and formless.
[8:31] Is God without form?
[8:32] Yes and no.
[8:35] God is with form too.
[8:37] And not with just one form.
[8:38] Many, many, many forms.
[8:41] Endless.
[8:42] People find it bewildering, the variety
of deities and yet God is one.
[8:46] It's one reality.
[8:47] You can see right there.
[8:48] The truth is one.
[8:49] The sages call it variously.
[8:51] Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti.
[8:54] One of the ways
in which God has been worshipped is Durga.
[8:57] It goes all the way back.
[8:59] Many people think
it's a new innovation in Bengal recently.
[9:02] There have been changes in Durga Puja
in Bengal recently,
[9:04] last two, three hundred years.
[9:05] But if you see the worship
of Durga herself, it goes all the way back
[9:09] to the Vedas, to the Rig Veda.
[9:11] Very clearly it is there.
[9:12] The Devi Suktam is there.
[9:15] So it is one of the oldest,
one of the most ancient living rituals
[9:21] in the world today.
[9:23] You worship of God as mother.
[9:26] Swami Vivekananda would say, There is in
this universe a great power
[9:31] which thinks of itself as feminine.
[9:34] You worship it as mother.
[9:36] She thinks of
itself as the mother of the universe.
[9:43] There is one of the Puranas,
Brahma Vaiyavarta Purana, that traces
[9:49] the history of the Durga Puja.
[9:51] How Durga was worshipped from
the most ancient times.
[9:55] It says, Durga was first worshipped
before the universe was created.
[9:59] In the eternal Vrindavan,
where Krishna reigns eternally
[10:03] in Vrindavan, not the earthly Vrindavan,
the eternal Vrindavan.
[10:06] Earth was not there at that time.
[10:07] In the eternal Vrindavan,
in the rasa mandala,
[10:11] where the eternal dance
of the gopis is going on with Krishna.
[10:15] There Krishna worshipped Durga
for the first time.
[10:18] That is the first instance of worship.
[10:20] That is timeless.
[10:22] Before time was created,
space was created,
[10:24] the universe was created.
[10:26] Then next we find Madhu Kaitava Vada.
[10:30] When we start the chanting,
Madhu Kaitava is mentioned here.
[10:33] The two demons Madhu and Kaitava.
[10:35] These stories are very fascinating.
[10:36] I'll tell a couple of stories.
[10:38] How do you deal with these stories?
[10:41] They are not supposed to be historical.
[10:45] Swami Vivekananda says the way
to use this, these are myths,
[10:48] but myths not in the sense of false.
[10:51] The religious scholar Reza Aslan says
myths are always true because they hold
[10:57] a core of truth, which is
an eternal spiritual truth, spiritual
[11:00] or moral truth, which is always true.
[11:02] The story is the coating.
[11:04] Swami Vivekananda tells us
how to use these stories.
[11:07] He says, listen to
the stories, let it wash through you.
[11:10] What it leaves behind is the truth.
[11:13] It will leave behind truth.
[11:14] It's like water washing over you
and leaving
[11:16] the fertile soil behind, the silt.
[11:21] Similarly, story.
[11:23] So at the point of creation,
you know the iconography Vishnu, God.
[11:30] Now before creation, God is sleeping.
[11:33] He's a bit of a couch potato.
[11:36] So he's reclining, the reclining posture.
[11:38] He's got his couch,
the cosmic serpent Ananta Sheshanaga,
[11:42] with a thousand heads,
and Vishnu reclines there.
[11:46] He's snoozing.
[11:48] And then he decides to,
the universe is to be created.
[11:51] You know the iconography that a lotus
blooms from the navel of Vishnu
[11:55] and Brahma is created there.
[11:58] But at the same time, two demons
emerged from Vishnu's ear
[12:03] and they dropped into the primal waters.
[12:07] Because of course, before the universe,
it was all covered in water.
[12:11] If you know,
how interesting the creation story
[12:14] in Vedas and in Genesis,
both of them start with
[12:18] before the universe was created,
all this was covered in water.
[12:23] So water
of course does not mean H2O there.
[12:25] It means the avyakta,
the maya from which everything emerges.
[12:30] So the primal waters, Kimasid Ghanam
Gabhiram, in the Vedic sutras you find,
[12:37] what existed in that unfathomed depth.
[12:41] So those two demons dropped into
that water and they did
[12:46] terrific austerities
to gain power, the demons.
[12:51] So there are descriptions.
[12:52] One of them, I think, stood on his head
for a thousand years and then
[12:56] the other one
held his breath for a thousand years.
[13:00] I think till he was blue in his face.
[13:03] And so the divine mother,
she was pleased with them.
[13:07] She was like, stop, enough already.
[13:09] What do you want?
[13:10] And they said, make us immortal.
[13:12] That's always the prayer of the demons.
[13:14] We want to be evil
and we want to do it eternally.
[13:16] We want to be eternally evil.
[13:19] She said, I can't grant you that,
but all right,
[13:23] you won't die until you agree to die.
[13:26] Only you can say when you will die.
[13:27] If you agree, then only you will die.
[13:29] They were happy. And they found now
whom to terrorize, there's nobody
[13:33] around, only God and he's sleeping.
[13:35] Now they saw, who's this guy, Brahma?
[13:38] Brahma is sitting, God has given him
the manual of creation,
[13:41] the Vedas to create the universe.
[13:44] He's sort of the subcontractor,
the contractor who's going to be.
[13:47] So you are snoozing on your couch,
you tell the contractor
[13:50] to make the house, the universe for you.
[13:53] And he's been given the manual, the Vedas.
[13:55] And these two crooks, they go
and terrorize poor Brahma.
[13:59] They make life miserable for him.
[14:01] They steal the Vedas
and they hide it somewhere in the waters.
[14:06] And so Brahma is very scared
and he's unable to create the universe.
[14:09] Anyway, the manual is lost.
[14:12] So he prays to Her.
[14:15] She appears and he wants protection
from these two evil demons,
[14:19] Madhu and Kaitava.
[14:20] Madhu and Kaitava.
[14:22] They are the two primal demons.
[14:24] So what she does, she awakens Vishnu.
[14:29] Because she had put Vishnu to sleep.
[14:32] She's called Vishnu Maya.
[Sanskrit shloka]
[14:43] The gods in later ages would chant to her.
[14:47] She who is known as the Maya
of Vishnu, who dwells in all beings.
[14:52] That's why we can't see God.
[14:53] She has covered it with a veil.
[14:56] Salutations to the three times
salutations.
[14:59] Namasthasyai.
[15:00] So three times salutation means,
Swami Chaitanandaji gave
[15:02] this interpretation, that the universe
is at three levels of creation.
[15:07] One is this gross physical universe
you see around.
[15:09] But this is the mother.
[15:11] So salutations to the mother.
[15:13] Then the subtle universe.
[15:14] Each of us has a mind, a personality,
thoughts, our inner world of thoughts,
[15:19] feelings, ideas, happiness, misery.
[15:21] So, salutation to the Divine Mother
who is in the form of our inner lives,
[15:26] our inner world, subtle world, sukshma.
[15:29] And all of it comes from
power, from the causal level.
[15:33] So she who is at the level of the cause
of the universe, the seed of the universe,
[15:38] the third namasthasyai, salutations.
[15:40] And the last one, namo namah.
[15:42] The last one is to the ultimate reality,
nirguna brahman, which is also she.
[15:47] She is not just the power of Shiva.
[15:50] She is not just the power of God.
[15:52] She is God.
[15:53] She is consciousness plus power.
[15:55] Just power is called Maya.
[15:57] But she is called Maha Maya,
which is consciousness plus Maya,
[16:01] which is Brahman and Shakti together.
[16:06] So she removed the veil
of Maya from Vishnu and Vishnu awakens.
[16:12] And Brahma asks for protection.
[16:14] So Vishnu fights the demons
and the demons fight back.
[16:18] But they are extremely powerful.
[16:19] They have been blessed by Her.
[16:21] So they fight for 5000 years.
[16:23] I kid you not.
[16:25] 5000 years and Vishnu can't defeat them
because they are not going to die
[16:29] until they are willing to die.
[16:30] So Vishnu pretends to be exhausted
and he says, well, you won.
[16:37] You guys won.
[16:38] I couldn't beat you.
[16:39] And they are also arrogant and stupid.
[16:42] They said, yeah, we beat you.
[16:44] We beat God.
[16:45] And Vishnu says, grant me a boon.
[16:48] Yeah, anything you want, you die.
[16:52] Now they can't refuse that
because they said, I will give you a boon.
[16:55] And so they agree to die.
[16:57] But then they may give a condition.
[16:59] They said,
you have to kill us only on dry land.
[17:02] But there is no dry land.
[17:03] There is only the primal waters.
[17:06] It's all waters.
[17:08] You know, this is before creation.
[17:09] So finally Vishnu puts
the two little demons, at least
[17:13] in iconography,
they are shown as two little demons.
[17:15] And they are extremely powerful.
[17:17] He puts them on his thigh
and with the Sudarshan chakra,
[17:20] he slays them.
[17:21] That's how he is known as
Madhusudana, the slayer of Madhu.
[17:25] Madhu Kaitava, the two demons.
[17:28] That's the first, that's the second time.
[17:32] The first one
is of course timeless in Vrindavan.
[17:34] But this is at the point of creation.
[17:37] And Vishnu recovers
the Vedas, hands it to Brahma.
[17:40] Quick,
create the universe and here we are.
[17:43] The universe has been created.
[17:44] The universe was created the third time.
[17:46] This is all
from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana.
[17:48] It's all in, all these stories
I am telling you, it's all in one verse.
[17:51] In the Prakriti Khanda
of the Brahma Vaivarta Purana.
[17:56] So then millions of years pass.
[17:59] Now it's the turn of Shiva.
[18:02] So there were these three demons again.
[18:07] I forget the names but it's not important.
[18:09] This is the story of Tripura.
[18:11] So they worshipped Brahma.
[18:14] And Brahma appeared before
those three demons
[18:17] and said, what do you want?
[18:18] He said, make us immortal.
[18:19] Again, can't do that.
[18:22] That's not for you.
[18:23] Then they said, alright, give us
three cities which are impregnable.
[18:29] You know, nobody can kill us
when we are in those cities.
[18:32] And so Brahma blesses them.
[18:34] The three cities were created.
[18:36] One, a golden city in the heaven.
[18:40] Second, a silver city in the skies.
[18:42] The third, an iron city on earth.
[18:46] And the three demons reigned on them.
[18:48] And they were a terror to the world.
[18:50] And none of the kings of the world,
none of the gods in heavens,
[18:54] none of them could defeat them
because they would just retreat to
[18:56] their invincible cities
and nobody could do anything to them.
[19:02] Brahma had made one condition
that in all the eons,
[19:08] the three cities which,
they are apparently like spaceships,
[19:10] so they float around the universe,
they will align once for a split second.
[19:17] And if anybody can shoot an arrow
through all three cities at the same time,
[19:22] then only the cities can be destroyed.
[19:24] That's the only condition.
[19:25] Otherwise, nobody can destroy the cities
or you as long as you are in the cities.
[19:29] So the three cities
spin around the universe.
[19:32] I mean, you should make
a science fiction movie out of this.
[19:34] It's so amazing, really.
[19:36] I mean, just the grand conception
of it, you'll have like Star Wars.
[19:43] Star Wars and Vedanta connection,
those who don't know, look it up.
[19:46] There's
a strong Vedanta connection, Star Wars.
[19:50] All right,
this is relatively like Star Wars.
[19:53] Now what happened?
[19:54] These demons are so powerful,
they terrorize the world.
[19:56] And what happens?
[19:57] So people pray to Shiva.
[20:02] And, oh, they pray to the Divine Mother
and she says
[20:06] Shiva will destroy the demons.
[20:09] And she tells them how.
[20:11] So he needs equipment.
[20:13] He needs a chariot to go out
and attack those three cities.
[20:17] What is the chariot?
[20:18] The earth is the chariot.
[20:21] What are the wheels of the chariot?
[20:22] The wheels
of the chariot are the sun and the moon.
[20:25] And Brahma is the charioteer.
[20:29] Vishnu becomes the arrow.
[20:31] And the great mountain
Meru becomes the bow.
[20:35] And the warrior is Shiva himself.
[20:38] It is in the Shiva Mahayana Stotra,
beautiful verse.
[Stotra sung]
[20:56] The earth is the chariot.
[20:58] The sun and the moon
are the wheels of the chariot.
[21:01] And the great mountain Meru is the bow.
[21:04] Vishnu himself is the arrow.
[21:07] And Shiva rides this chariot.
[21:08] And Brahma is the charioteer, the driver.
[21:11] So, and this amazing, you know,
Uber Excel or whatever you call it.
[21:16] And Shiva rides it to fight against
the three demons and the three cities.
[21:20] And at the right moment, in the eons
which have passed,
[21:25] the three cities align for one moment.
[21:27] And Shiva shoots that arrow.
[21:30] Can you imagine the space battle scene
it would make in a Hollywood movie?
[21:36] Or Bollywood.
[21:37] And Shiva shoots an arrow
through all three cities and burns them
[21:42] into ashes in a split second.
[21:44] Although there is a South Indian
tradition, a Tamil tradition,
[21:47] in which Shiva doesn't even shoot
the arrow.
[21:49] He smiles.
[21:52] So, one of the names of Shiva is the one
who smiled
[21:55] and reduced the cities to ashes.
[21:57] He smiled.
[21:58] Even the Shiva Mahayana Stotra,
the hymn which I just chanted,
[22:02] the next two lines say,
why does God need all these?
[22:06] And the answer is, he doesn't.
[22:07] He is playing.
[22:09] So, the demons are reduced to ashes.
[22:12] Again by the blessings of Ma Durga.
[22:17] And that's
why Shiva gets the name Tripurari.
[22:21] Tripurari.
[22:23] That's the third time.
[22:26] The fourth time
is Indra, the king of gods.
[22:30] He was reduced to a sorry state.
[22:32] He lost all his glory
because the sage Durvasa had cursed him.
[22:36] So, he prayed to the Divine Mother
for restoring his glory, his divine glory.
[22:40] So, one of the hymns about her says,
Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu Kanti Rupena Samsthita
[22:47] That Devi, that divine goddess,
that goddess who resides in
[22:53] all beings as glory, as beauty, as glory.
[22:57] So, she restores the glory of Indra.
[23:00] That's the fourth time.
[23:02] And the fifth time is the first time,
but all of these are non-human.
[23:06] First time a human being worships her.
[23:08] This is the story.
[23:10] The story of King Surata.
[23:12] King Surata had lost his, he was a king,
in the dynasty of Dhruva, I think.
[23:21] And he had lost his kingdom.
[23:24] But then he prayed to
the Divine Mother to restore his kingdom.
[23:28] A worldly desire.
[23:29] But she did.
[23:31] So, and he was the first one
who made an image to worship her.
[23:35] So, that's the story
of the human worship of the goddess.
[23:41] All of these,
and he worshipped her in spring.
[23:43] This is what is called Basanti Puja.
[23:46] So, Durga is actually worshipped twice.
[23:48] The original puja,
the original worship was in spring.
[23:52] And that has sort of faded into
the background.
[23:54] What happened was, again centuries passed.
[23:58] And then Rama has come
to fight against the demon king Ravana.
[24:02] And he worships the Divine Mother
for her protection
[24:06] and power to defeat Ravana.
[24:09] And he invokes her, not at the usual time
when she is invoked, which is spring.
[24:13] The spring worship.
[24:14] But he invokes her now,
in autumn, in the fall.
[24:18] So, this is called the autumnal
or fall worship of the Divine Mother.
[24:22] In Bengali, Sarodiya Durga Puja.
[24:24] And that has become, Navaratri Sarodiya
Durga Puja, that has become
[24:27] the most important form of
Durga Puja in India, in Hinduism now.
[24:32] The worship of Durga at this time.
[24:35] So, because she has been called, invoked,
awakened at a time, which is not
[24:41] her usual time to come,
this is called Akalabodhan.
[24:45] Invoking at,
not the right time, some other time.
[24:50] And this is the worship which we have now.
[24:53] Swami Vivekananda says, anything that
you want to accomplish in this world,
[24:58] you have to worship the Mother.
[24:59] It is the Mother's grace.
[25:01] Brahman is fine.
[25:02] Existence, consciousness, bliss.
[25:05] And nothing else.
[25:07] Now, the thing is,
that is true as far as it goes.
[25:10] But we are living in this world of,
you can call it Maya, you can call it
[25:15] names and forms,
but it makes a huge difference to us.
[25:19] Whether you are sick or healthy,
from Brahman's perspective, one existence.
[25:24] Yeah, it appears as sickness,
it is playing the sickness movie,
[25:26] the screen is the same.
[25:28] And it is a movie.
[25:29] It could be a tragedy or a comedy.
[25:31] But it makes all the difference to us.
[25:32] A tragedy puts us into tears,
a comedy makes us love and laugh.
[25:37] Love and laugh.
[25:38] Which one do you want?
[25:40] We have a preference.
[25:42] To the screen, it doesn't matter.
[25:44] It is exactly the same thing.
[25:46] If you have a preference, and we do,
we want our life
[25:50] to be like this and not like that.
[25:52] Even spirituality.
[25:54] I don't want my mind to be scattered.
[25:56] I want my mind to be focused.
[25:58] I don't want my desires flowing out
in a hundred different streams
[26:00] into the world.
[26:01] I want devotion for God.
[26:03] I want self-knowledge, not ignorance.
[26:05] If I want all that,
then you need the Divine Mother.
[26:11] Her blessings are necessary.
[26:12] Even for spirituality,
for God realization.
[26:16] Sri Ramakrishna
used to call it, Shakti Relaka.
[26:20] The realm of Shakti.
[26:22] Everything in the world
is in the realm of Shakti.
[26:25] And including enlightenment, freedom,
mukti, moksha,
[26:29] that's also in the realm of Shakti.
[26:30] She can give everything in the world
and freedom from this world also.
[26:36] Swami Vivekananda says, His own language,
She is the very heart
[26:42] of the law of causation, karma.
[26:45] She is what powers this law of causation.
[26:48] Cause and effect.
[26:49] Good, good, bad, bad
and none escape the law.
[26:52] But what is this law?
[26:53] Because Brahman is the same anyway.
[26:54] There is
no whisper of this law in Brahman at all.
[26:57] No causality.
[26:58] This law, he says, is the Divine Mother.
[27:01] But it's in her hands.
[27:04] If you want to fudge the accounts
a little bit, you can't do it yourself.
[27:07] And Brahman is unconcerned.
[27:10] Who will help?
[27:11] Mother will help.
[27:13] Vivekananda says,
she responds to prayers quickly.
[27:17] So father is a little strict,
but mother is soft.
[27:21] If you nag her enough, she will give you
what you want, even
[27:25] if you don't deserve it.
[27:27] Including enlightenment
and God realization.
[27:30] I have known such people, who,
out of intense prayer to the mother,
[27:35] they got at least an insight,
a flash of this realization of the Divine.
[27:41] So she gives.
[27:42] And quickly, that too.
[27:46] In our day and age, of course,
Sri Ramakrishna is known as the greatest
[27:50] of the worshippers of God as mother.
[27:54] And Vivekananda.
[27:55] Our interest today is
because of Vivekananda, we are here today.
[27:59] And so that is closely connected to
the worship of the Divine Mother.
[28:02] I'll speak a little bit about that.
[28:04] So when Vivekananda comes to
Sri Ramakrishna, remember for
[28:07] Sri Ramakrishna, God was always Mother.
[28:10] Mother Kali, Ma Kali, Durga, same.
[28:13] So Vivekananda comes and asks
Narendranath Dutta, asks
[28:16] Sri Ramakrishna, Sir, have you seen God?
[28:19] That's what he was going around asking.
[28:21] All great preachers, teachers.
[28:24] And it is a bit uncomfortable, especially
if you're a great religious teacher,
[28:28] and you're talking about God day
and night,
[28:30] and this young man comes impertinent.
[28:32] Have you seen God?
[28:34] And you have to hesitate
and scratch your head.
[28:36] No, but it can be seen.
[28:40] So he goes to Sri Ramakrishna and
Sri Ramakrishna says,
[28:45] Yes, I have seen God.
[28:47] Just as I see you, even more clearly.
[28:50] And you too can see God.
[28:53] And so Narendranath is convinced.
[28:55] He becomes a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.
[28:58] Sri Ramakrishna trains him.
[28:59] Sri Ramakrishna sees that this young man
is going to be the carrier
[29:02] of his message across the world.
[29:04] To train him up, to equip him,
he wanted to give him two things,
[29:08] both of which Narendranath did not want.
[29:10] One was the non-dual realization
of Brahman, that there is an ultimate,
[29:14] absolute, non-dual reality, existence,
consciousness, bliss, and you are that.
[29:19] The world is a dream.
[29:21] Narendranath was not interested.
[29:23] Sri Ramakrishna would ask him to read
Ashtavakra Gita,
[29:26] the highest text of non-dual Vedanta.
[29:28] And Narendranath would read
and say, What is all this?
[29:33] The cot is God, the pot is God,
the door is God, the window is God,
[29:38] you are God, I am God,
what nonsense is this?
[29:41] And Sri Ramakrishna said,
just read it for my sake.
[29:44] It was for his sake actually,
but anyway, read it for my sake.
[29:47] And one day
Sri Ramakrishna actually touches him.
[29:50] And Narendranath has
this vivid experience, undeniable.
[29:53] He finds one reality inside and outside,
one radiance, existence,
[29:57] and consciousness, and bliss.
[29:59] The park in front of the house,
which is still there, the Hidua Park,
[30:03] in front of Vivekananda's house.
[30:06] There are these iron railings,
which are also still there.
[30:08] So Narendranath says he went and banged
his head against the iron railings to see
[30:12] whether they were substantial or not.
[30:13] A coach was coming,
a horse-drawn carriage.
[30:16] He didn't feel like stepping aside.
[30:18] Luckily he did,
that's why we are all here today.
[30:20] He didn't feel like stepping aside.
[30:22] It seemed like a dream, like a movie.
[30:23] It lasted for three days, this vision.
[30:28] After a certain time
it became a little less in which he saw
[30:31] the reality Brahman
and the world also shadow-like.
[30:35] After that he could never doubt.
[30:37] And that's what he taught here
in the West, in America,
[30:39] the Vedanta, the non-dual truth.
[30:43] Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the highest,
the deepest absorption, he wanted that.
[30:46] One day he got that in Kashipur, when
Sri Ramakrishna was already ill
[30:49] towards the end of Sri Ramakrishna's life.
[30:51] And when he comes out of it,
he shouts, where is my body?
[30:55] I can't see my body.
[30:57] And Advaitanandaji, another disciple of
Sri Ramakrishna, Budhogopal Maharaj,
[31:01] he rushed upstairs where Sri Ramakrishna
was on his sickbed upstairs.
[31:05] Those who have gone to Kashipur,
you can see the same layout is there.
[31:08] He went upstairs and says to
Sri Ramakrishna,
[31:11] Naren says he can't feel his body.
[31:14] No introduction, what's going on.
[31:16] Sri Ramakrishna says,
let him stay like that for a while.
[31:19] He has pestered me enough for it.
[31:22] Let him stay like that for a while.
[31:25] That was one side of it,
the Nirguna Brahman,
[31:28] the teaching of non-dual Vedanta.
[31:31] The other side was mother,
Sri Ramakrishna's beloved mother.
[31:35] And Narendra Dutta would have none of it.
[31:38] First of all, it's image worship.
[31:40] It is image worship in spades.
[31:43] So there is a temple and there is
a Brahmin priest and there is the image
[31:47] of Kali
and all very orthodox traditional
[31:51] Hinduism.
[31:52] Now Narendra Dutta was, he was
this educated in western philosophy
[31:57] and he was a member of the Brahmo Samaj
which was a reform movement in
[32:01] 19th century Hinduism in Bengal.
[32:05] So he did not believe in image worship
and the ritualism
[32:10] of traditional orthodox Hindus and so on.
[32:13] Actually the Brahmos didn't even consider
themselves to be Hindus.
[32:17] So he wouldn't even go to the temple.
[32:19] He liked Sri Ramakrishna
so he came to Sri Ramakrishna.
[32:22] But he wouldn't go to the temple,
he would sort of avoid it
[32:24] and he would call mother
in the temple Thakur's mother.
[32:28] That means not mine, that's his mother.
[32:32] Now it so happened that he fell on
hard times, Narendra Dutta.
[32:36] His father, very successful lawyer,
advocate died suddenly.
[32:40] And the family which was so well
off plunged headlong into poverty.
[32:46] And it was very difficult
for them to make ends meet.
[32:49] I mean
the descriptions are so moving, you know.
[32:52] That how they didn't have enough food
to eat and Narendra Dutta
[32:57] as the eldest son of the house.
[33:00] He was a responsible young man.
[33:02] It was his responsibility to take care
of his poor widowed mother
[33:05] and his little brothers and sisters.
[33:07] He couldn't find a job,
he couldn't find a way of making money.
[33:10] And proud as he was, he would say
I have been invited by a friend for lunch.
[33:15] So I won't eat.
[33:17] Nobody had invited him,
he would go hungry.
[33:19] Just so that his younger brothers
and sisters would have enough to eat.
[33:22] He struggled, couldn't make ends meet.
[33:25] Then he comes finally helplessly
to Sri Ramakrishna.
[33:27] Because he sees thousands
of people come daily
[33:29] to the mother's temple.
[33:31] Whatever they want, at least they hope
they will get those blessings.
[33:34] So he asks Sri Ramakrishna,
can you help me, can you tell her?
[33:40] Sri Ramakrishna says I never ask for
such things, money
[33:43] and job and things like that.
[33:45] You go and ask.
[33:47] And Narendra Dutta says no,
she listens to you, you ask her.
[33:51] Sri Ramakrishna says I am telling you,
you go and ask,
[33:54] you will get your heart's desire.
[33:56] And today is the day of mother's worship.
[33:58] It is an auspicious night, evening.
[34:01] So Narendra Dutta
goes to the temple of Kali.
[34:04] And there instead of a stone image,
he sees a living presence.
[34:10] In Bengali, Chinmoyi.
[34:12] Mrinmoyi means she
who is made of clay or rock.
[34:15] Chinmoyi means she
who is made of consciousness.
[34:18] She is standing there radiant,
filling the temple with her presence.
[34:22] And he is intoxicated, God intoxicated.
[34:25] He asks her
for devotion, love and devotion.
[34:31] For knowledge,
for dispassion for the world.
[34:33] And he comes back,
he is reeling with God intoxication.
[34:37] Sri Ramakrishna says what happened?
[34:39] He narrated everything.
[34:40] He says all that is good
but did you ask for money?
[34:42] And he said no, I forgot.
[34:44] Oh, how foolish, still time,
go, go, go and ask for money.
[34:48] So he goes back a second time,
the second time the same thing happens.
[34:51] He comes back
and he narrates that same thing.
[34:54] He couldn't ask for money.
[34:55] How foolish, go again a third time.
[34:57] This time Vivekananda knew that it was
all the play of Sri Ramakrishna.
[35:00] So he comes back
and says I know it is your play.
[35:03] You please bless me.
[35:05] And Sri Ramakrishna said, alright,
your family will not want for
[35:09] plain food and clothing.
[35:11] In Bengali, Mota Bhaat Kapur,
plain food and clothing.
[35:14] I bless you that much.
[35:15] Your ends will meet.
[35:16] It was a test.
[35:18] It was a test.
[35:22] The three kinds
of devotees we read about in the Gita.
[35:26] Artha, Artharthi, Jigyasu
and then the fourth one, Jnani.
[35:29] Krishna says devotees,
those who believe in
[35:31] God are of four kinds.
[35:33] One, those who are in trouble.
[35:35] They need protection.
[35:37] And they worship God.
[35:39] Help me.
[35:40] There is no way I can save myself
or whatever I want
[35:43] or my beloved person, whoever it is.
[35:45] Help me.
[35:46] In trouble.
[35:47] The second one is not in trouble
but they want to get something
[35:50] in the world.
[35:51] You know, get money or power
or in India, win an election.
[35:55] They will turn up in temples,
politicians, just before an election.
[35:58] So whatever you want.
[36:01] That is Artharthi,
those who want stuff in the world.
[36:04] And the third one is
who do not want anything in the world.
[36:07] They want God.
[36:09] So Vivekananda, who had asked,
what was the question
[36:12] he had come with to Sri Ramakrishna?
[36:13] Does God exist?
[36:14] Have you seen God?
[36:16] Have you seen God?
[36:16] Not even does God exist.
[36:17] That's the theoretical question.
[36:19] Have you seen God?
[36:21] So Sri Ramakrishna was testing him.
[36:24] Which category does he belong to?
[36:25] Now that he is in
trouble, he really needs money.
[36:29] Is he in the category
of the distressed devotee?
[36:33] Is he in the category of the devotee
who wants money and prosperity?
[36:37] Because she can give.
[36:38] The Divine Mother can give if you want it.
[36:40] But every time Narendra Nath passed with
flying colors, he said again
[36:44] and again clearly that even in his time
of direst need,
[36:49] he wanted God and nothing but God.
[36:50] So it's a demonstration
in our times of those ancient verses.
[36:54] And then what happened was
because of this, Narendra Nath had
[36:58] no further doubt
about the existence of God.
[37:02] Not only the limitless pure consciousness
of Brahman, the non-dual truth,
[37:07] but that it appears as the mother
of the world, that it comes to
[37:10] you as the mother of the world.
[37:12] It creates, protects
and preserves this universe.
[37:16] He had no more doubt.
[37:18] He asked Sri Ramakrishna,
can you teach me a song of Kali?
[37:21] So Sri Ramakrishna that night,
he taught him that song, Ma Tvam hi Tara.
[37:26] Ma Tvam hi Tara,
Tumi Trigunadhara, Paratpara.
[37:31] You are the ground of this universe,
the universe which is made of
[37:35] three gunas, Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.
[37:37] You are Trigunadhara, the support
of the universe on which
[37:40] these three qualities are playing.
[37:43] Paratpara,
and you are beyond this universe also.
[37:46] You are the Nirguna Brahman also.
[37:49] Durga Meti Dukha Hara,
when you are someone who is in
[37:53] deep trouble,
you are the one who removes their misery.
[37:59] Brahman, not concerned.
[38:02] But you are the one who will come
to help and remove their misery.
[38:06] Swami Vivekananda himself says,
there is in this universe a mother.
[38:10] Even if you have nobody in this universe,
she will never, and he says,
[38:14] never, never, never abandon you.
[38:18] Know this for sure.
[38:20] We must take refuge in her.
[38:22] He says two things.
[38:23] Be as children, trust, give up
all these, he says, uncanny theories.
[38:27] All your, this philosophy,
that philosophy,
[38:30] give up all these theories.
[38:32] Be as children, take refuge in her.
[38:36] Then only are you safe.
[38:39] Trust in her, then only are you safe.
[38:41] In another place he says, if you can,
we must surrender to
[38:45] her continuously, unconditionally.
[38:48] She will protect you.
[38:51] Then we will have peace.
[38:52] So two things, peace and safety.
[38:55] You want peace in life and you want safety
in life,
[38:58] life and life after life, forever.
[39:00] She will give it to you.
[39:02] But you must surrender to her, trust her,
be as a child trusting the mother.
[39:07] As a child who holds on to the mother.
[39:08] Sri Ramakrishna will say
you can be spiritual in two ways.
[39:12] Like a baby monkey and a baby kitten.
[39:13] A kitten is a baby anyway.
[39:15] So like a baby monkey and a kitten.
[39:17] So the baby monkey
holds on to its mother tightly.
[39:22] And the mother jumps from tree to tree.
[39:24] If you have seen
that in India, you can see that often.
[39:27] But it's a dangerous thing to do.
[39:30] Because baby is a baby.
[39:31] If the baby monkey lets go of his
or her hold, it will tumble
[39:35] down, fall down into the forest.
[39:38] Because you are holding on to God.
[39:42] And if you let go, you let go.
[39:44] You never ask God to hold on to you.
[39:47] I saw that actually happen before my eyes.
[39:49] Again, diversion.
[39:50] In my eyes I can see that happening.
[39:53] So we have an ashram in the Himalayas,
a place called Mayavati.
[39:57] And that was established by
Swami Vivekananda.
[39:59] It's about 7000 feet
high in the Himalayas.
[40:03] Durga, by the way, one of the names
of Durga is the daughter of the Himalayas.
[40:10] The thing, refrain which we chant?
[40:16] Shailasute.
[40:18] The daughter of the snows.
[40:20] Daughter of the snows.
[40:21] Yes.
[40:22] So in the Himalayas it's there.
[40:24] Now the thing is,
that place is, there are tigers.
[40:27] Have you heard, every child
in India has read stories
[40:30] of Jim Corbett hunting tigers?
[40:32] Tiger hunting stories, we all read that.
[40:34] That's the place he hunted the tigers.
[40:35] That's the place.
[40:36] Champawat.
[40:38] There are stories, man eater of Champawat.
[40:40] So there were
these huge royal Bengal tigers there.
[40:43] There were.
[40:44] Then they were hunted to
almost extinction.
[40:49] But when Vivekananda was there
and for years afterwards
[40:52] the tigers were still there.
[40:55] So there, the point of it is,
there you have to sit in
[40:59] a cage and meditate.
[41:00] The human beings are in the cage,
the monks
[41:02] are in the cage, the animals are outside.
[41:05] And it makes sense
because I tried once to sit in
[41:08] the forest and meditate.
[41:09] You can't.
[41:10] Just a little snap of a twig
or something, you feel a tiger is coming.
[41:13] Now, nowadays, when I went, that was
20 years ago,
[41:16] there were no tigers at that time.
[41:18] There were cheetahs
and bears which are bad enough.
[41:21] Not cheetahs, leopards.
[41:22] Leopards and bears, that's bad enough.
[41:26] But now, I went last year,
I heard the tigers are back.
[41:30] And they are already eating up
human beings.
[41:33] So anyway, long story short,
I was sitting in a cage.
[41:36] I decided to sit in
the cage and lock the door
[41:38] and then you can meditate.
[41:39] It's very, only, there is an ambient sound
of the jungle behind you.
[41:44] Then suddenly I saw
the whole flock of monkeys.
[41:48] It's like National Geographic.
[41:49] You are sitting and watching.
[41:50] Whole flock of monkeys race across
the clearing and climb up into the tree.
[41:56] And there were mother monkeys
with baby monkeys clinging to them.
[42:00] They were being chased by a wolf.
[42:03] I later discovered
they are like mountain dogs.
[42:06] They are not literally wolves.
[42:07] But anyway, mountain dogs.
[42:07] They were chased by a wolf.
[42:09] And one baby monkey fell down
and is immediately torn apart
[42:12] in front of me.
[42:13] By that mountain dog.
[42:15] So the danger of being a baby monkey
is that, yes, I will realize God.
[42:22] Why?
[42:22] How?
[42:24] By lots and lots of YouTube talks
and reading lots
[42:28] of books and attending classes.
[42:31] And I will sit for meditation.
[42:32] I will hold my breath for
a thousand years like the demon.
[42:36] But remember,
after all that, he became a demon.
[42:38] He was still a demon.
[42:40] I will hold my breath
and all that sort of stuff.
[42:43] I will do.
[42:43] That's the baby monkey's way.
[42:44] You can reach God that way.
[42:46] But there is a danger there too.
[42:48] And the kitten's way, Sri Ramakrishna
says, is the kitten
[42:51] surrenders to the mother, the cat.
[42:54] And wherever the cat, you know,
the cat catches
[42:55] the kitten, the scruff of the neck.
[42:57] And takes it from place to place.
[42:59] And Sri Ramakrishna
gives a graphic description.
[43:01] There is a kitten just says, mew, mew.
[43:04] And the mother comes
and takes it from place to place.
[43:06] And wherever she thinks fit,
puts it there.
[43:09] The kitten is fine.
[43:10] As long as she has
the mother, the kitten is okay.
[43:13] The kitten is fine with the mother.
[43:16] She has the mother.
[43:17] She has no concern where she has been put.
[43:21] So, like that, if you can surrender to
God, then, Vivekananda says,
[43:29] one must surrender continuously,
unconditionally.
[43:32] Then you will have peace.
[43:38] There is one
who is the Mother of the universe.
[43:40] There is a Mother in the universe.
[43:42] He says, capital M. There is a Mother
in the universe who will never,
[43:45] never, never abandon you.
[43:47] Holy Mother says,
She says, listen, my children.
[43:53] Wherever you are in life, whatever
you're doing in life, even
[43:55] if you have nobody else in the world,
always know that you have a mother.
[44:01] She means herself
or the Divine Mother, Durga.
[44:04] So, that is Vivekananda.
[44:07] He accepts Kali.
[44:08] We're back to our story.
[44:09] He accepts Kali.
[44:10] He sings this song
[44:14] Ma Tvam Hi Tara.
[44:15] You are the Redeemer.
[44:16] Oh, Mother, you are the Redeemer.
[44:17] You are the one who takes us
across the samsara, the ocean of samsara.
[44:22] You are the Redeemer.
[44:23] Ma Tvam Hi Tara
[44:24] he sings.
[44:26] There is a book by Swami Buddhananda
who describes this
[44:29] so beautifully, so lyrically.
[44:31] He says, the song was wafted by the wind
across the temple garden of Dakshineshwar.
[44:36] It was dark by that time, past midnight.
[44:38] Into the skies above Dakshineshwar,
across the river Ganga,
[44:42] into the skies and the star above.
[44:46] And he sang.
[44:47] He sang again and again
and again all night long, the same song.
[44:52] Next morning, how do we know all this?
[44:54] Because Sri Ramakrishna himself said so.
[44:55] Next morning,
many people came to meet as usual.
[44:58] And whoever came into his room,
he would point to Narendranath,
[45:00] who was exhausted and sleeping in
a corner, and say, he has accepted Kali.
[45:04] Isn't it wonderful?
[45:06] Now, what is this accepting Kali?
[45:09] What does it mean?
[45:10] People, to humor him, they said,
yes, I guess it's wonderful.
[45:13] I guess so.
[45:15] It sounds good, whatever it means.
[45:18] But it means something really great.
[45:21] By the way,
he would sing that song,
[45:24] Ma Tvam Hi Tara,
one more time.
[45:26] At the end of his life.
[45:29] Vivekananda, at the end of his life,
4th July, when all the work of the mother
[45:32] was done, in Belur Mutt,
the new monastery, the last day
[45:36] of his life, 4th July, he selected
that, Independence Day of America.
[45:40] Deliberately selected that.
[45:41] That day, early in the morning,
he was only 39, he was to say
[45:45] that, I won't live to see 40.
[45:47] He went into the temple of
Sri Ramakrishna, closed the door,
[45:51] and that day's worship, he did himself.
[45:54] And he closed the door,
he meditated for a long time.
[45:57] Then afterwards, from outside,
the monks heard
[46:00] him singing that same song,
[46:03] Ma Tvam Hi Tara.
[46:05] Again and again and again.
[46:08] Anyway, so he accepts the Divine Mother
that she is true, she is real.
[46:14] Swami Vivekananda came to this country.
[46:19] He himself said so many things
about the Divine Mother, about Kali.
[46:23] He said, how I used to hate
her ways, I would not accept Kali.
[46:28] But he surrendered me,
Sri Ramakrishna surrendered me to her.
[46:32] And made me a slave of her.
[46:34] And now she guides me
in every little thing that I do.
[46:41] How he came here, that also is
a connection with the Divine Mother.
[46:47] When, after Sri Ramakrishna passed away,
Vivekananda heard about
[46:50] the World Parliament of Religions,
he felt he should come, he felt.
[46:54] But he wasn't sure,
he had no clear command from God.
[46:57] And he didn't receive anything,
that he has to come here.
[47:01] So in his dilemma, he wrote a letter.
[47:03] He was in Hyderabad at that time.
[47:05] He wrote a letter to her.
[47:08] Of course, he didn't know where she was.
[47:10] So he wrote a letter to her,
his brother disciples,
[47:14] care of his brother disciples
at the monastery in Calcutta,
[47:17] I think Alam Bazar at that time.
[47:20] Addressed to her, marked urgent.
[47:24] And then the next part
of the story, we didn't know the details.
[47:26] We know the story in general,
that he wrote a letter and she blessed him
[47:30] and said you should go to the West.
[47:31] It is Sri Ramakrishna's wish.
[47:33] But the details we didn't know.
[47:35] Now we know by some research
which was done by Swami Purnath Parandaji,
[47:40] who is the head
of our centre in Dhaka in Bangladesh.
[47:43] So in a talk he said, many decades ago,
he had met a gentleman who knew
[47:48] the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna,
was very close with them.
[47:50] And he heard the story from them.
[47:52] So the letter arrived in the monastery
from Vivekananda to her and they sent
[47:56] the letter
onwards to Jayarambati by post.
[47:59] Now that night, that early morning,
that day when the letter arrived,
[48:04] she called her younger brother.
[48:06] We know when you read about her life,
Kalimabhadra, the middle brother,
[48:10] Mejo. Called him
and said, go and collect the mail.
[48:15] Sri Ramakrishna came to me last night
and said, Naren's letter is coming.
[48:21] Naren's letter is coming.
[48:24] And Kalimabhadra, the younger brother
of the mother, he said,
[48:29] but today is not the mail day.
[48:30] Now what used to happen was there was
a central post office
[48:32] and there was something
called a dark peon, a mail peon.
[48:35] He would come to a central place
in the middle of multiple villages,
[48:38] including Jayarambati,
he would sit there with the mail.
[48:41] You know when the mailman will come.
[48:43] You have to go and collect your mail.
[48:47] Email is not bad, you should see.
[48:49] That's how you get your mail.
[48:51] Today is not the mailman's day.
[48:52] He is not supposed to come today.
[48:54] And she said, no, it's coming today.
[48:56] Go and see.
[48:58] So he goes and he sees the mailman
sitting there alone in the middle
[49:01] of a field,
waiting for him with that letter.
[49:03] He said, this is not
the day, but it's marked urgent.
[49:06] So the postmaster
said you should go and deliver it.
[49:09] So here's the letter.
[49:12] So Kalimama rushed back to the mother.
[49:15] She opened it
and there Vivekananda had written.
[49:17] It had to be read out to her.
[49:19] Vivekananda had written about
the world parliament of religions,
[49:24] Chicago, America,
all of which she didn't know anything
[49:26] about.
[49:27] She felt sad that her beloved child
would have to go so far away,
[49:32] in far off foreign lands.
[49:33] That night Sri Ramakrishna again comes to
her and says, tell him to go.
[49:37] It will do great good to the world.
[49:39] Jago ter kollan habe, jete bologe.
[49:42] So she writes an unconditional support,
letter of blessings.
[49:46] So all these stories, this kind
of research was done by
[49:49] Swami Purnath Parandaji.
[49:51] There also the divine mother's will
that Vivekananda had to come here.
[49:56] He comes here, he starts teaching.
[50:00] He says clearly that whatever
I'm doing here,
[50:03] I'm guided in every little thing by her.
[50:07] Somebody asked him,
how do you get all these ideas?
[50:10] You don't see him preparing.
[50:12] How do you get all these ideas?
[50:13] She says, Ma, Rashtralaya,
Sri Ramakrishna also used to say.
[50:18] Somebody asked Sri Ramakrishna,
where do you get all these ideas,
[50:20] these wonderful teachings?
[50:22] When I'm empty, the mother
pushes in more material into me.
[50:25] She is there.
[50:26] And Vivekananda also the same thing.
[50:27] It's like the divine mother
would literally tell him what to say in
[50:30] the next talk or the next lecture.
[50:36] This is his guidance.
[50:39] Another thing he says that this is
the age of the worship of God as mother.
[50:43] God as father, yes, certainly.
[50:46] God as the formless Brahman, certainly.
[50:48] But this is a special age of the worship
of God as mother
[50:51] because of the Ramakrishna avatar,
because of Ma Sarada.
[50:54] The power of God especially,
the mother aspect
[50:57] of God is especially manifest.
[50:59] You see it in many ways.
[51:00] You can't prove it,
but you can see it in many ways.
[51:03] In the last hundred years or so,
the liberation
[51:06] and the rise of women across the world.
[51:10] There is a tremendous force working in
society and utterly transforming society.
[51:17] Joseph Campbell who went from
here to India in 1950, visited India.
[51:22] He writes about his impressions
of India in a book, in a diary.
[51:26] There he mentions
that women have no participation in life.
[51:30] You hardly see any women
going to work in the outside home.
[51:36] That was 1950.
[51:37] Now you go to India.
[51:39] Tremendous difference.
[51:41] The lives that women today have,
not just India, India especially,
[51:44] but everywhere in the world.
[51:45] The lives that women today have is
very different from the lives
[51:48] their mothers had
and tremendously different
[51:51] from the lives their grandmothers had.
[51:53] And that's true across the world.
[51:55] That's true across the world.
[51:57] There is a great awakening
of the mother power
[51:59] in this universe today.
[52:02] Swami Vivekananda says,
it would do you great good if you see,
[52:06] if everybody sees
the divine mother in all women.
[52:11] If you see the mother in all women.
[52:13] What is the secret here?
[52:15] In Hinduism, we divinize our relationships
with the human, with the human being
[52:20] and humanize our relationship with God.
[52:22] Notice how we are referring to
God as mother.
[52:25] God is mother
or father or friend or master.
[52:29] God is master, I am the servant.
[52:31] God is Ramachandra,
the servant is Hanuman, I am the servant.
[52:35] God is friend.
[52:37] Krishna is God and Arjuna is
the disciple but also friend.
[52:41] The relationship is of a friend.
[52:43] God is mother or father.
[52:45] In Christianity, God is father.
[52:48] In Hinduism,
God can be both father or mother.
[52:53] For Sri Ramakrishna,
God was always mother.
[52:55] Even after his non-dual realizations,
ultimately the one thing that was common
[52:58] throughout his life
was God as mother, as a divine mother.
[53:02] Then God can be child.
[53:05] God can be your baby.
[53:07] That is the whole idea of the baby
Krishna, the baby Jesus, the baby Rama.
[53:11] God can be worshipped as child.
[53:15] Then God can be your beloved
like Radha and Krishna.
[53:19] So these are the human relations.
[53:22] But that's how you relate to God.
[53:23] You relate to
divinity through human relations.
[53:25] Because we understand the human relations,
now you impose it
[53:28] upon divinity and relate.
[53:30] See the relations
are important for pulling the heart.
[53:34] Non-dual Vedanta can seem very clear,
very convincing
[53:38] but it can also seem rather cold
and stratospheric.
[53:45] Vivekananda said, these ancient rishis,
they have taken human thought
[53:49] to such stratospheric levels
that human lung can scarce breathe there.
[53:55] You are not letting
me live if you stay at that state.
[54:01] In life, how do you relate to
God as a human being?
[54:06] Just as you relate to other human beings.
[54:08] You relate to God as a human being.
[54:11] So Ramakrishna says, such a person
who loves God as a human being,
[54:15] when they feed their child,
they will feel that they are feeding God.
[54:20] When they take care of their parents,
they will feel that they are taking care
[54:23] of, he says, shakshat bhagavan bhagavati,
they are taking care of father
[54:27] and mother, God and the goddess.
[54:29] So this is divinizing
your relationships with God.
[54:34] But you,
humanizing your relationships with God.
[54:39] But you divinize
your relationships with the human beings.
[54:42] So with your father, mother, husband,
wife, children, friend, what do you do?
[54:47] You see God in them.
[54:49] That's why Swami Vivekananda says,
especially to see the divine mother
[54:52] in all women, that is a powerful practice
for multiple reasons, across many reasons.
[55:01] I will,
[55:02] oh we have just run out of time.
[55:05] On this day, I will pray to
the divine mother
[55:10] Ma Durga to bless all her children.
[55:13] We will remember
the words of Swami Vivekananda.
[55:17] Many times he said, he said about
Sri Ramakrishna,
[55:19] he was Kali, I am convinced of it.
[55:22] Kali worked up the body
of Ramakrishna for her ends, he says.
[55:26] And he says,
there is a Mother power in the universe.
[55:31] Know that, which will never,
never, never abandon you.
[55:35] We must trust in her
and take refuge in her.
[55:38] Another time he says, that there is
a power in this universe
[55:42] which thinks of itself as feminine.
[55:45] As, and we all of us as her children.
[55:48] We must surrender to
her continuously and unconditionally.
[55:52] He says, it's a continuous practice,
an unconditional practice.
[55:57] Swami Turiyanandaji, Hari Maharaj,
great non-dualist, all his life.
[56:03] Baby monkey.
[56:05] But all his life, if you see the last part
of his life, specially when he went to
[56:09] the, when he came to the USA
[56:10] and then he went back to India,
all throughout his life, all his letters
[56:13] and talks, you will see
it's mother, mother, mother, always.
[56:19] And he says, I am Brahman
that came easily to Vivekananda.
[56:24] It doesn't come easily to us.
[56:26] Therefore, I say, mother, thou art all.
[56:31] He says, the best philosophy
is ground yourself in Vedanta.
[56:34] Realize you are that,
at least know that you are that reality.
[56:37] And then play with
the mother all your life.
[56:40] That's the best kind of life you can lead.
[56:42] Life will go on anyway.
[56:44] The body
will live until the death of the body.
[56:46] It will go on living.
[56:47] There will be people,
there will be things to be done.
[56:48] There will be ups and downs.
[56:50] Past karma will keep giving results.
[56:54] Take it not as, karma, you know, foolish people
take this world as, that's
[56:59] a bad person, that's a good person.
[57:02] And it's all their fault.
[57:04] A little more wise person
takes it as karma.
[57:07] It is mine.
[57:08] I get what I deserve.
[57:10] It's good karma, bad karma,
all of it, it's getting the results.
[57:14] A wiser person, he takes
this karma as the blessings of God.
[57:20] For my own spiritual evolution,
the mother has arranged this.
[57:24] I am growing
and the mother is just playing with me.
[57:27] Sometimes the play
can be a little painful.
[57:31] Mother is playing with me.
[57:33] My life
is this play I have with the mother.
[57:39] One American lady, sister Devamata,
she became a sannyasini.
[57:42] She went to India.
[57:43] She met many of the direct disciples
of Sri Ramakrishna.
[57:45] One day Swami Ramakrishna Anandaji,
who established the Ramakrishna Math
[57:49] in Mylapore, in Chennai,
he was telling her
[57:52] the struggles in his life.
[57:54] He had lot of struggles
in setting up the ashram there.
[57:56] And she writes, Sister Devamata,
I felt bad such a holy
[58:00] and spiritual person
like him had to suffer so much
[58:03] and I expressed as much to the Swami.
[58:05] And the Swami looked astonished.
[58:07] He said, my true life is eternal.
[58:10] This little, little life,
let her play with it as she will.
[58:14] It is her play.
[58:15] So we must be aware.
[58:18] We also must be like
the surrender, like the baby kitten.
[58:21] This is like the kitten.
[58:22] Kitten is a baby anyway.
[58:23] So like the kitten we must be
and be perfectly contended to do our best
[58:30] wherever she puts us.
[58:32] Knowing, trust in her.
[58:33] Because she is taking us
towards freedom, spiritual freedom.
[58:38] To see the divine
in all beings and to serve them all.
[58:42] I pray to
the mother that she may hold on to us.
[58:46] We are foolish children.
[58:48] We may or may not understand.
[58:51] One devotee says to her, children play
and they, oh she herself said, Ma Sarada,
[58:56] children play and soil themselves.
[58:58] They become dirty.
[58:59] They roll in the mud and play in the mud.
[59:00] It's the mother's duty to clean them
up and take them on her lap.
[59:04] So I will take them on my lap.
[59:08] So we express our helplessness.
[59:11] Our foolishness.
[59:13] Our silliness to before her.
[59:16] May she bless us
and take care of us forever and ever.
[59:19] May her blessings extend to all beings.
[59:23] To her children of all races,
of all religions, of all nations.
[59:27] Of all sentient beings, human, animals,
plants, gods and even the demons.
[59:33] All of them.
[59:34] May they all enjoy
her blessings and her protection.
[59:38] Om Shanti Shanti Shanti. Hari Om Tat Sat.
Sri Ramakrishna Arpanamastu
