[0:08] Good morning.
[0:15] Lovely to see
[0:18] many familiar faces. Wonderful.
[0:29] >> [sighs]
[0:35] >> It's a lovely day here in New Hampshire,
[0:38] which is where I am.
[0:42] And if it were possible, I would do this
[0:45] outside with the beautiful leaves um
[0:49] as a backdrop.
[0:51] But uh my neighbors tend to do yard work
[0:53] on Sunday mornings. So, consequently, it
[0:57] is safer conditions for purposes of this
[1:01] to be inside, but uh it's really uh
[1:03] gorgeous
[1:05] out in my neck of the woods, peak
[1:07] foliage season here in New Hampshire.
[1:10] It's also beautiful in Nashville,
[1:12] Tennessee. All right. You love being
[1:14] outside.
[1:15] As you if if you're like me and you kind
[1:18] of check out, you know, where people are
[1:20] sometimes, you know, on the Zoom, which
[1:22] I think is a good thing.
[1:24] You know, I often sit outside.
[1:27] Sometimes in um weather conditions that
[1:29] are a bit uh challenging.
[1:32] One wants to be properly uh garbed for.
[1:35] Yeah.
[1:38] >> [laughter]
[1:42] >> I was sitting outside uh in a meditation
[1:45] group yesterday, and they did rain on me
[1:48] during the my set outside, and I had to
[1:51] relocate
[1:53] >> [snorts]
[1:53] >> to the garden shed.
[1:57] So, as uh many of you know, but in case
[2:00] there's folks new here, I'm Suzanne. I'm
[2:04] one of Loma Series senior students, and
[2:07] it is my privilege, and I really mean
[2:10] that, privilege to be able to share my
[2:12] practice with you and um to connect with
[2:16] you this morning. So, thank you all for
[2:19] being present and showing up to practice
[2:22] together in community.
[2:25] So, let's um ring the bell and bow into
[2:29] each other right away. I like that's
[2:31] that's exactly where I want to start,
[2:33] okay?
[2:35] >> [bell]
[2:40] [bell and music]
[2:45] [music and bell]
[2:53] >> Bowing to all your potential and
[2:56] beingness,
[2:58] to each other.
[3:11] And take a moment.
[3:13] Really take in the community
[3:16] of folks practicing together today.
[3:21] Guys, you're awesome. I'm flipping the
[3:23] screen for a moment, so I can make sure
[3:27] >> [sighs]
[3:29] >> I take in all of you.
[3:31] Mhm.
[3:35] How great is that? Yeah.
[3:38] Thank you all.
[3:40] Thank you.
[3:43] All right.
[3:45] Dory, I want you pull up the uh
[3:48] four measurable aspirations and we'll
[3:51] start with the setting of intention. So,
[3:54] we'll just do this in in English and
[3:58] >> [sighs and gasps]
[3:58] >> feel free to chant along or if you'd
[4:01] like really just kind of take it in in
[4:03] the heart all of your beingness.
[4:11] May all beings possess happiness and the
[4:14] inner causes of happiness.
[4:18] May all beings be free from suffering
[4:22] and the inner causes of suffering.
[4:28] May all beings remain undivided from the
[4:31] sacred joy which is free from suffering.
[4:37] May all beings come to rest in great
[4:40] peace and equanimity beyond attachment
[4:43] and aversion to friends, enemies, or
[4:47] strangers.
[4:50] >> [sighs and snorts]
[4:56] >> Three cheers for Dory who's always just
[4:58] um taking care of those of us who don't
[5:01] like to manage the Zoom. So, thank you.
[5:09] So,
[5:12] little little participated participatory
[5:15] opportunity here. So, I'm curious if
[5:19] you'd like to share a quick raise of
[5:22] pick a hand virtual or otherwise, how
[5:24] many of you have intentionally kind of
[5:26] set down the devices for a day, the
[5:29] phone, the iPad, and and taken a little
[5:33] bit of just screen time, ping time away.
[5:38] You know, maybe 6 hours, half a day.
[5:42] So, some of you. Okay. All right. Yep,
[5:46] I'm checking the second screen of
[5:49] um
[5:52] If you, you know, use your your chat GPT
[5:55] or your Google, you know, you will find
[5:58] um
[5:59] plenty of recommendations from
[6:01] uh mental health uh professionals and
[6:04] learned people with degrees who will
[6:06] tell you that is a very
[6:08] um
[6:08] wise and wonderful thing to do for
[6:10] yourself, which as we know, sometimes
[6:13] taking care of ourselves then means it's
[6:16] a lot easier to to take care of others.
[6:19] So, we don't have to quite draw some
[6:20] hard boundaries there.
[6:22] >> [snorts]
[6:23] >> Um how many of you have have taken a a
[6:25] solitary retreat of any length? Cuz I
[6:28] know we've got some people have been
[6:30] around for a while.
[6:32] Let me to hit the second page. I see
[6:33] some thumbs up.
[6:35] Awesome. Awesome.
[6:39] So, what I'm
[6:41] inviting us in and what I'll just kind
[6:43] of say a few words about today and got a
[6:46] few
[6:47] readings is uh really in
[6:50] in praise
[6:52] and encouragement for a bit of uh
[6:55] device-free time or ideally some
[6:58] solitary practice. So, that's the theme
[7:01] of the day in the sense that I had the
[7:05] good fortune to take the last weekend
[7:07] and spend some time
[7:10] >> [sighs and gasps]
[7:10] >> retreating.
[7:11] So, I'm all happy.
[7:14] >> [laughter]
[7:15] >> As is
[7:15] the case when I take time away
[7:17] generally, not always, but
[7:20] often. So,
[7:22] So, to that end,
[7:24] so I had a a lovely little solitary and
[7:26] maybe more at the back end when we
[7:28] finish our practice our practice today.
[7:32] Um some practical tips for how you might
[7:34] want to um find uh some opportunities to
[7:38] step aside from the usual kind of
[7:40] responsibilities that you have. I went
[7:42] around looking and I I'm rather fond of
[7:45] Patrul Rinpoche who is in our lineage.
[7:49] And I found this lovely little
[7:51] little piece from "Yearning for Mountain
[7:54] Solitude"
[7:55] and Patrul Rinpoche
[7:58] writes,
[8:00] uh "Grant your blessings and enable me
[8:02] to settle in the solitude of the
[8:05] mountains
[8:07] somewhere that provides physical and
[8:09] vocal isolation
[8:12] and thereby inspire a true solitude of
[8:15] the mind."
[8:18] Sounds good.
[8:20] Sounds good.
[8:22] Or this from Patrul Rinpoche from the
[8:24] special teaching of the wise and
[8:26] glorious king.
[8:29] "Until stability is attained,
[8:32] it is vital to meditate away from all
[8:35] distractions and busyness, practicing in
[8:38] proper meditation sessions."
[8:41] Well, that sounds good.
[8:43] Kind of
[8:44] is in accord with my many years of of
[8:47] practice, so well, it's resonating.
[8:50] Perhaps that's resonating for you.
[8:54] And then this favorite uh piece from
[8:56] Patrul Rinpoche
[8:58] and it's called "Excerpts from Advice
[9:01] from Me to Myself."
[9:04] Um and for those of you who like to to
[9:06] take in things from an auditory
[9:08] perspective, um
[9:11] uh Seminary Jayasagara, um if I
[9:14] pronounce that correctly, um reads this
[9:17] uh teaching uh in a a lovely way on her
[9:20] YouTube site. Um and I I find this one
[9:24] quite entertaining because Patrul
[9:26] Rinpoche is is as he says giving advice
[9:30] to himself, clearly when he's a bit
[9:32] older.
[9:34] And and this kind of leads us I think
[9:36] right into
[9:38] um particularly for some of us who've
[9:39] been around um
[9:42] into why solitary and and keeping it
[9:44] simple can be really lovely.
[9:47] And these are excerpts, so I don't read
[9:50] the whole thing.
[9:52] Your mind is spinning around
[9:55] about carrying out a lot of useless
[9:58] projects.
[9:59] It's a waste. Give it up.
[10:02] Thinking about the hundred plans you
[10:04] want to accomplish with never enough
[10:07] time to finish them
[10:09] just weighs down your mind.
[10:12] You're completely distracted by all
[10:14] these projects
[10:15] which never come to an end
[10:18] but keep spreading out more like ripples
[10:20] in water.
[10:22] Don't be a fool for once. Just sit
[10:25] tight.
[10:28] Listening to the teachings. You've
[10:30] already heard hundreds of teachings.
[10:33] But when you haven't grasped the meaning
[10:35] of even one teaching, what's the point
[10:37] of more listening?
[10:40] Reflecting on the teachings even though
[10:42] you've listened
[10:44] if the teachings aren't coming to mind
[10:46] when needed what's the point of more
[10:48] reflection?
[10:50] None.
[10:51] Just sleep, eat
[10:54] piss, There's nothing else in life
[10:57] that has to be done.
[11:00] >> [snorts]
[11:00] >> Just sleep, eat, piss, There's
[11:04] nothing else in life that has to be
[11:05] done. Don't
[11:07] get involved with other things. They're
[11:09] not the point.
[11:11] Keep a low profile.
[11:13] Sleep.
[11:17] Well, isn't that a wonderful, you know,
[11:19] a getting away from the habit of
[11:22] overdoing?
[11:25] There it is, from the master himself.
[11:28] And there are sections about oh, you
[11:30] don't really need more students. You
[11:32] know, don't need to write anymore.
[11:36] >> [snorts]
[11:36] >> So, with that, um, we can always do
[11:39] less.
[11:42] At least sometimes.
[11:45] >> [sighs]
[11:47] >> So, let's take a seat.
[11:53] Ringing the bell, just cuz it's nice to
[11:55] hear the bell again.
[11:59] >> [bell]
[12:26] >> And as you take your seat,
[12:29] >> [snorts]
[12:32] [sighs]
[12:34] >> I love to let the weight just kind of
[12:36] settle.
[12:50] Find that connection to the earth,
[12:52] grounded, stable,
[12:55] held.
[13:14] Finding that posture
[13:18] that for you seems
[13:20] awake and yet relaxed.
[13:57] >> And then we let go.
[15:01] Got to let go of the roles.
[15:17] The projects.
[15:58] >> Just resting.
[16:40] What if everything that needs to be done
[16:43] is actually already done?
[16:48] Nothing more for you to do.
[17:24] >> Can you feel it? Let it go.
[17:27] Nothing more to do.
[19:35] >> Nothing to achieve.
[19:37] No special state.
[19:40] Be here.
[20:56] No need for any self-criticism
[21:01] if that afternoon project is popping up
[21:04] in your mind.
[21:08] To see you can not complicate it and
[21:11] it'll go away on its own.
[21:14] >> [sighs]
[23:07] >> This little bit from Franz Kafka.
[23:12] You do not need to leave your room.
[23:16] Remain sitting at your table and listen.
[23:22] Do not even listen.
[23:24] Simply wait.
[23:27] Be quiet.
[23:29] Still and solitary.
[23:33] The world will freely offer itself to
[23:36] you to be unmasked.
[23:39] It has no choice.
[23:41] It will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
[26:34] >> invitation. Take a little stretch if you
[26:37] need to, if you want to.
[26:40] >> [snorts]
[26:47] >> Great time to check out my holding
[26:49] tension somewhere in the body. Maybe I'm
[26:52] actually trying to achieve a state as
[26:54] opposed to relax into a state.
[26:59] Uh
[27:00] tricky.
[27:11] And if this practice is at all new to
[27:13] you and you need a bit of an anchor,
[27:16] feel free to let your attention rest in
[27:18] the lower part of your body that
[27:20] connection with the
[27:22] the couch, the cushion, the chair,
[27:27] and the breath in the lower belly.
[27:56] And just refresh as often as needed
[28:00] without judgment.
[28:20] I'll put a little Ralph Waldo Emerson.
[28:24] Each moment of the year has its own
[28:27] beauty.
[28:30] A picture which was never seen before
[28:33] and which shall never be seen again.
[28:38] So, you can wake up to that beauty.
[28:42] Right here.
[28:44] Right now.
[28:52] >> [sighs]
[29:30] >> If you have some challenges in your own
[29:32] life,
[29:33] take a look at the faces on the screen.
[29:38] There is beauty right there, this
[29:40] moment.
[30:07] You all make me happy.
[30:14] And I work too hard.
[33:11] >> Invitation if you need a refresh, use
[33:14] that breath. Take that nice inhale.
[33:22] Let it fill you up.
[33:27] >> [sighs]
[33:28] >> Enjoy that exhale.
[33:30] Let go.
[33:32] Let the body relax.
[35:37] >> [sighs]
[35:38] >> How about a little Mary Oliver?
[35:43] This is an extra extract. There we go.
[35:46] From The Ponds.
[35:51] Still, what I want in my life
[35:55] is to be willing to be dazzled.
[35:58] To cast aside the weight of facts.
[36:02] And maybe even to float a little above
[36:04] the difficult world.
[36:08] I want to believe I am looking into the
[36:10] white fire of a great mystery.
[36:17] I want to believe that all the imperfect
[36:19] imperfections
[36:22] are nothing.
[36:24] That the light is everything.
[36:42] >> [sighs and gasps]
[36:43] >> So, all the imperfections
[36:46] are nothing.
[36:49] It's nothing for us to do in this
[36:51] moment.
[36:57] Except to be dazzled.
[37:01] To be in the mystery of awareness.
[37:06] With all of you.
[37:25] >> [sighs]
[39:58] >> Keep it fresh.
[40:06] >> [sighs]
[40:20] >> Wiggle your toes,
[40:23] roll your shoulders, anything you might
[40:25] need.
[40:28] >> [sighs]
[40:30] >> I do not need more caffeine. Maybe you
[40:33] do though, or the dog or the cat.
[41:01] And if you feel like you're working,
[41:03] then stop.
[41:07] And laugh.
[41:09] But just hang here.
[41:15] Tricky this thing.
[41:16] We do invitation.
[41:21] Take the last few minutes here of our
[41:24] formal part of our practice.
[41:28] Feel free to send some prayers out to
[41:31] well wishing out to
[41:34] anyone who
[41:35] might need some
[41:37] extra love and attention.
[41:40] If you're home, no worry when you're
[41:42] ready. If you want to pull up
[41:46] our dedication prayers.
[41:54] Thank you.
[41:56] >> [snorts]
[41:58] [sighs and gasps]
[42:00] [singing]
[42:14] >> Through this virtue, may we swiftly
[42:16] realize and fully embody the natural
[42:18] great perfection and thereby bring all
[42:21] without exception to its complete
[42:24] realization.
[42:28] Okay.
[42:29] Jong dub sem chok ribo shay make a panam
[42:34] keg your sheet kepa nem pa me pa yum
[42:40] gone a gone due pal war show.
[42:45] May the pure brilliant sun of bodhicitta
[42:48] dawn in each and every heart and mind
[42:51] dispelling the darkness of suffering and
[42:53] confusion
[42:55] unstoppably until all are illumined and
[42:59] awakened.
[43:02] Thank you, Dory.
[43:09] >> [music]
[43:11] [bell]
[43:18] [bell]
[43:20] [music]
[43:27] [sighs]
[43:39] >> So, I saved a little bit of time at the
[43:41] end so I could just say a few words of
[43:44] encouragement
[43:46] about taking that opportunity if you can
[43:49] to
[43:50] either at least be device free
[43:53] for a day perhaps
[43:55] or to get yourself off on a on a little
[43:59] solitary retreat.
[44:02] I've done a number over the years, some
[44:05] shorter, some longer.
[44:07] Sometimes
[44:09] I've gone with with a book.
[44:11] You know, this is the book I want, you
[44:13] know, Heart Sutra.
[44:14] Took a lovely week-long retreat, had a
[44:17] little commentary on the Heart Sutra,
[44:18] which I've studied and loved throughout
[44:20] the years.
[44:21] And uh that became my my focus point um
[44:24] along with my meditation practices.
[44:27] >> [snorts]
[44:27] >> Um
[44:28] last two solitaries, including the one I
[44:31] did um this past weekend, I
[44:34] intentionally did not take book.
[44:38] And really allowed myself to be bored
[44:43] sometimes,
[44:45] to really sit and be in nature.
[44:49] >> [snorts]
[44:50] >> Um
[44:51] and that is kind of what I needed in
[44:55] this moment, you know, getting past that
[44:57] habit of overdoing.
[45:01] >> [snorts]
[45:02] >> Very [clears throat] tricky.
[45:03] Um
[45:05] and so I I think, you know, this is a
[45:07] kind of depends where you are in your
[45:09] practice um
[45:12] >> [snorts]
[45:12] >> about what is most useful and conducive
[45:15] for you. Um but I do highly recommend
[45:18] the getting away. I did mine sort of
[45:20] last minute. Um so I decided not to let
[45:24] um
[45:25] perfect be the enemy of good enough. Um
[45:28] so I I had the long weekend I'd
[45:31] scheduled to
[45:33] not work.
[45:35] Um and to not be with family. I was
[45:37] going to do something. Um but having uh
[45:40] been bit busy, I I didn't schedule any
[45:43] place to go.
[45:46] I had kind of a retreat in mind and then
[45:48] the teacher changed. I was like, "Hm,
[45:50] no." Um
[45:52] so I bought a $25 Walmart tent and set
[45:55] it up in my backyard.
[45:57] Um used my daughter's very underutilized
[46:01] backpacking gear, uh which actually
[46:03] worked pretty well, and had a nice
[46:05] little retreat in my backyard.
[46:08] So, was it the getting away in the same
[46:12] sense that I had done in the past? And
[46:14] the answer is no. Was it good enough?
[46:16] Absolutely. My partner didn't talk to
[46:19] me. We had it We had a deal.
[46:21] He did cook for me, which was really
[46:22] nice for part of the time.
[46:25] >> [laughter]
[46:25] >> Nothing like smelling fresh banana bread
[46:27] while you're, you know, hanging out with
[46:28] the lineage.
[46:30] Here. I'm like, "Oh, banana bread."
[46:32] >> [laughter]
[46:33] >> Um
[46:35] So, so yeah. So, it wasn't the getting
[46:37] away, but I've been very busy, and it
[46:39] was just what I needed. Didn't have to
[46:41] think about it other than, "Oh, you know
[46:42] what? I I got everything else. I just
[46:44] need a tent."
[46:46] Um
[46:47] And
[46:48] and so it was it was good enough, right?
[46:50] Cuz I was able to not do other chores.
[46:52] I'm I can set those boundaries.
[46:55] And I took a day before I went on
[46:57] retreat to tell everyone,
[46:59] "I'm going to be offline. Family, work
[47:02] people,
[47:03] you know,
[47:05] I don't expect to hear from me until
[47:07] Monday."
[47:09] You know, sometime noon or later.
[47:12] So, it was a lovely three, well,
[47:15] four nights, you know, full 3 days and a
[47:18] little bit on each end.
[47:19] Um so, it it can be done without
[47:25] you know, if if you don't have time or
[47:27] money to figure out, "Okay, I want to
[47:29] schedule, you know, a nice little hut at
[47:33] the retreat center."
[47:34] Cuz I lacked planning.
[47:38] You know, there are ways to make this
[47:40] work. I've had people use my space for
[47:43] solitary retreat, and they just take
[47:45] care of the cat.
[47:46] Of course, now I have cat and chickens,
[47:48] so it's a little trickier. But, um
[47:51] but you might find, you know, a neighbor
[47:53] or someone who's going away.
[47:55] And if you're okay just walking the dog
[47:58] or petting the cat and
[48:01] you know, that might work. So, so you
[48:04] know, be open to those opportunities.
[48:08] Um and if nothing else, do
[48:10] I really encourage you to give yourself
[48:12] a device-free,
[48:13] you know, day. That it that at least I
[48:16] think, you know,
[48:17] unless you need it for your health
[48:19] reasons, which I certainly respect um
[48:21] and you should honor.
[48:23] Um there are opportunities to to even
[48:26] just put those devices down. I love a
[48:28] good podcast, right?
[48:31] I love a good audiobook.
[48:33] But it was really good for me to be off
[48:37] all of those things. Just to be, "Oh, I
[48:40] can't quite fall asleep, but I'm tired."
[48:44] And not to reach for the book or not to
[48:47] turn on the podcast or, you know,
[48:51] take one of those other options up, but
[48:53] kind of to sit with my tiredness
[48:56] and where it was in the body and, "Huh.
[49:00] Okay. Watch the mind. Where is it
[49:02] going?"
[49:03] >> [laughter]
[49:03] >> When it's tired. Um so, you know, these
[49:07] opportunities are there.
[49:10] And and I think they're,
[49:12] you know, something to to look at.
[49:14] Doesn't have to be be perfect.
[49:19] So, I could keep talking as is my want,
[49:22] but what I'll do is I'll just pause for
[49:25] a moment and if there's
[49:28] um
[49:30] something, you know, right on
[49:33] point that you want to share, um I'll
[49:36] leave a little space for that or a
[49:38] question that's kind of you've never
[49:40] taken a solitary or something. Um
[49:43] anyway, so I'll just leave quiet for a
[49:46] moment.
[49:49] Just in case.
[49:51] So,
[49:52] feel free to raise your hand or unmute.
[49:54] I'm not
[49:55] >> [snorts]
[49:57] [sighs and gasps]
[50:08] >> You're all going to be quiet. And that's
[50:10] okay.
[50:14] Quiet's not a bad thing.
[50:17] And if you connect with Patrul Rinpoche,
[50:19] like, oh, actually I need you know,
[50:21] you've got enough books actually. How
[50:23] many books do you have on your bedside
[50:24] table? Right?
[50:26] I got three.
[50:30] Maybe we just kind of let it go for a
[50:33] bit.
[50:34] Like we don't maybe need another
[50:36] teaching. We just need to see if we can
[50:37] stabilize our practice.
[50:40] If you've been around for a while, I
[50:41] highly recommend if you have not read
[50:43] Patrul Rinpoche's, you know, advice to
[50:45] myself,
[50:46] that is just
[50:49] useful.
[50:52] Useful.
[50:57] All right. Well, thank you all for
[51:01] practicing.
[51:03] And um yeah, go forth with much
[51:06] encouragement to take care of yourself
[51:08] and all beings.
