[0:00] There actually is only [music] one like
[0:02] you, Ni Nash Betts. You end up with an
[0:06] Emmy. You end up with a hit series. How
[0:08] has fame impacted the way you see
[0:11] yourself?
[0:11] >> You know, the critics dragged us.
[0:13] >> Dragged you like zero on Rotten
[0:15] Tomatoes, but the people said, "Uh-uh."
[0:17] >> Oprah, that's what my mama said. My mama
[0:18] said y'all couldn't get one tomato.
[0:20] [laughter]
[0:22] >> You and your wife [music] Jessica
[0:24] celebrating your six-year wedding
[0:26] anniversary. Nobody was more shocked
[0:29] than I was. What happened? I kissed her
[0:32] and my tongue came out a little bit.
[0:34] Oprah, [laughter]
[0:36] >> what's the greatest luxury you have
[0:38] afforded yourself?
[0:39] >> The greatest lux? That's a good
[0:41] question. I get wigs delivered to my
[0:43] house every week. I'm sick. Lord, help
[0:45] me. I'm sick.
[0:46] >> You have a wig addiction.
[0:47] >> I'm expensive. [laughter] Okay.
[0:52] >> Hey, thanks for hanging out with us here
[0:54] on the Oprah podcast. It's popping in
[0:57] the tea outs today cuz my guest is the
[1:01] one. When I say one and only, there
[1:03] actually is only one like you, Ni Nash
[1:07] Betts. So, we're going to talk about
[1:08] your show of course, but first, one of
[1:11] the things I wanted to talk to you about
[1:13] today is how you, Miss Nissi Nash Betts,
[1:17] have had one of the most evolutionary
[1:20] lives and careers that we've seen. How
[1:24] did you manifest this dream
[1:28] >> for yourself?
[1:30] >> Well, when I was 5 years old, I saw the
[1:32] most gorgeous black woman I had ever
[1:35] seen. She had on a long red dress and
[1:37] her eyelashes look like butterflies. And
[1:39] I said, "Grandmama, who is that?" My
[1:41] grandmama said, "Baby, that's Lola
[1:43] Fana." [laughter] And I felt like in
[1:45] that moment, my destiny was stamped on
[1:48] the canvas of my imagination. That's
[1:51] what the the most high, the universe put
[1:52] in me. And I look at my grandmother and
[1:54] I said, I want to be black, fabulous,
[1:57] and on TV. And
[1:58] >> at 5 years old,
[1:59] >> yes. And I knew then where I was going.
[2:03] I didn't know how long it was going to
[2:04] take. But you say, "How did I manifest
[2:06] it?" Because I believed what the Most
[2:08] High deposited in me. I didn't try to
[2:11] talk myself out of it. And I feel like
[2:14] sometimes your first instinct or that
[2:16] first voice that you hear is the closest
[2:18] we will ever get to God.
[2:19] >> Oh yes. I've heard that voice, too. And
[2:21] I love that phrase, destiny was stamped
[2:24] on the canvas of my imagination.
[2:26] >> Yes, ma'am.
[2:27] >> But you did not have those words at the
[2:29] time. You just felt what?
[2:31] >> I felt like that's who I'm meant to be.
[2:34] So, I would only wear dresses. And back
[2:37] then, when I was little, you were a lady
[2:39] if you had a little scarf tied here on
[2:41] the neck. So, I would have the scarf,
[2:44] the dress, and the only sunglasses I had
[2:46] had Mickey Mouse on the top, but I said,
[2:48] "It'll have to do."
[2:49] >> [laughter]
[2:49] >> So I
[2:50] >> I'm going to make do with Mickey.
[2:52] >> I put my and I would sit on the porch
[2:54] and I would just be a lady and then if
[2:56] you didn't call me Lola, I don't know
[2:59] who you're talking to cuz you got to
[3:00] call me Lola if you want me to do
[3:02] anything
[3:02] >> really.
[3:03] >> And my first stage was to stack two
[3:06] phone books together, turn around in a
[3:08] circle, and finish with a flourish.
[3:11] >> Wow.
[3:11] >> Yeah. And I was like, "This guys get
[3:13] ready. This is this is what's
[3:15] happening."
[3:16] >> Wow. It's interesting that your
[3:17] Instagram handle is Nissi the range
[3:20] Nash. Is that because your range is so
[3:24] great?
[3:25] >> Well, I found out that my contemporaries
[3:27] were calling me that behind my back.
[3:29] >> Yeah.
[3:30] >> I found out through somebody else like,
[3:32] "Oh, yeah. You know, they call you the
[3:33] range."
[3:35] Well, I let me Where's my Instagram? Let
[3:37] me re let [laughter] me rejigger a few
[3:39] things because I do feel like I am such
[3:43] a blessed girl that I can do
[3:47] heartwrenching drama and also in this
[3:50] same vessel I can make you laugh like
[3:53] nobody's business and that's very very
[3:56] rare in this business that you can stand
[3:59] flatfooted and say oh yeah I can do both
[4:02] and I love that because it means my
[4:03] peers can trust me no matter what the
[4:05] work
[4:05] >> no matter what it
[4:07] And does it matter to you whether you're
[4:08] doing one or the other? Whether you're
[4:10] doing humor, whether you're doing drama,
[4:12] whether you're doing
[4:13] >> At this point in my life, not at all. I
[4:16] love work. I'm expensive. [laughter]
[4:18] Okay.
[4:20] So, I I I want things. So, whatever the
[4:23] work is, as long as I can lean into it
[4:26] and identify with it, I don't care if
[4:27] it's comedy or drama. for a very long
[4:30] time, no one would see me in a dramatic
[4:33] um uh for a dramatic role because oftent
[4:37] times people want to leave you where
[4:38] they meet you.
[4:39] >> Yes.
[4:40] >> And they met me as a comedian and were
[4:42] like, "Oh, no. We know what you do."
[4:44] >> They want to leave you where they meet
[4:45] you and they also want to keep you in
[4:46] that box.
[4:47] >> Yeah.
[4:47] >> Absolutely.
[4:48] >> And I was like, "Absolutely not."
[4:50] >> Okay. So, you first hit it big being
[4:51] hilarious on Reno 911 and then we
[4:54] watched you transition to dramatic roles
[4:57] in
[4:57] >> I mean, was it Ava who first saw you as
[4:59] a serious character?
[5:00] >> You know what it was? I did a show for
[5:02] HBO called Getting On.
[5:04] >> Ava saw Getting On and said that's my
[5:07] Richie Jean
[5:08] >> for Selma. For Selma,
[5:10] >> once Ava called me and put me in Selma,
[5:14] >> then put me in When They See Us, people
[5:17] were like, "Where did this lady come
[5:19] from?" I'm like, I've been here all
[5:20] along telling you guys I know I can do
[5:23] it. And I literally, this is a true
[5:25] story, called a whole team meeting. And
[5:27] I got down to my agency and they were
[5:29] like, well, why are we here? I said,
[5:30] because I want to reintroduce myself to
[5:32] you because I think you think you know
[5:34] me, but I done changed. You [laughter]
[5:37] know what I mean? I can do other stuff.
[5:39] You know what I mean? Like, I support
[5:41] tricks in this bag. [laughter]
[5:42] And I said, if you don't see me the way
[5:44] I see myself, we have to part ways. No
[5:47] hard feelings, but and so a few people
[5:49] left on the team and other people got
[5:52] added on the team.
[5:53] >> They actually left on the team.
[5:54] >> Yeah.
[5:55] >> Or you asked them to leave.
[5:57] >> I just said, "Do you see what I see?"
[5:59] >> H
[6:00] >> And when they did and I said, "Well,
[6:02] thank you for coming." It was so wow.
[6:04] >> Thank you for your time.
[6:04] >> So it was Ava Duven, Selma, then Ava
[6:07] Duet's When They See Us, then it was
[6:09] Ryan Murphy's monster, the Jeffrey Dmer
[6:12] story. Yes. I had to fast forward cuz I
[6:14] told you I don't think I was going to be
[6:15] able to watch the monster Jeffrey Dharma
[6:17] series. So I fast forward to your parts
[6:19] and even that was pretty wrenching.
[6:22] >> 911.
[6:23] >> Hello, this is Glenda Cleveland. Can you
[6:25] send an officer to the Oxford
[6:27] Apartments?
[6:28] >> What's the emergency?
[6:30] >> Well, I I I I think it's a a fight going
[6:33] on next door and somebody somebody is
[6:35] either being hurt or killed.
[6:38] >> Can you go make sure
[6:39] >> what? No, I can't. I said, "I think
[6:43] somebody is being killed. I ain't going
[6:45] next door."
[6:46] >> And you said that you would come home
[6:48] rung out after that.
[6:50] >> Is it because of the material?
[6:52] >> How did that material affect you?
[6:54] >> Well, it was just interesting because of
[6:57] that of the dynamic on set. You know, I
[7:00] was working with an actor who stays in
[7:03] character. Mhm.
[7:04] >> So you you can't really lean in because
[7:08] >> we didn't have any sort of a
[7:10] relationship on set.
[7:12] >> Ah, I see.
[7:13] >> You see what I mean? And so it was very
[7:15] much like you say good morning and you
[7:17] get
[7:18] >> Jeffrey DMA
[7:19] >> because he going to stay in, right? Stay
[7:21] in it,
[7:21] >> you know? So it just used to it was
[7:25] exhausting in in some ways but also too
[7:28] because I was filming Reno 911 the movie
[7:31] the hunt for QAnon at the same time.
[7:34] >> So I would leave from one set with my
[7:36] glasses on and my curlers and then go
[7:38] over there and put my baby hair and my
[7:40] big booty on.
[7:41] >> Mhm.
[7:41] >> So I was pulling double duty and I'm
[7:44] glad it was that way because the Reno
[7:46] took a little bit of that weight off
[7:48] Yeah.
[7:48] >> of the other one.
[7:50] >> You were doing both at the same time.
[7:51] Yeah.
[7:52] >> Oh, girl, you're good.
[7:53] >> I was doing both at the same time.
[7:56] >> Wow.
[7:56] >> And I would still go home and had save
[7:59] time to skinny dip and drink champagne
[8:01] or
[8:02] >> Yeah.
[8:02] >> You know, whatever.
[8:03] >> That Emmy was made for you
[8:05] >> that year.
[8:06] >> Thank you.
[8:06] >> And your Emmy speech was won for the
[8:08] ages. Let's watch it.
[8:10] >> I'm a winner, baby. [applause]
[8:15] Thank you to the most high for this
[8:18] divine moment. Thank you, Ryan Murphy,
[8:21] for seeing me. Evan Peters, I love you.
[8:24] Netflix, every single person who voted
[8:27] for me, thank you. My better half who
[8:30] picked me up when I was GUTTED FROM THIS
[8:32] WORK. THANK YOU. AND YOU KNOW WHO I WANT
[8:33] TO THANK? I want to thank me
[8:38] for believing in me and doing what they
[8:41] said I COULD NOT DO. And I want to say
[8:43] to myself in front of all you beautiful
[8:46] people, go on girl with your bad self.
[8:49] You did that.
[8:51] Finally, I accept this award on behalf
[8:55] of every black and brown woman who has
[8:57] gone unheard yet overpoliced like Glenda
[9:01] Cleveland, like Sandra Bland, like
[9:03] Briana Taylor. [applause]
[9:06] AS AN ARTIST, MY JOB IS TO SPEAK TRUE TO
[9:09] POWER. And baby, I'MMA DO IT TO THE DAY
[9:12] I DIE. MAMA, I WON. [cheering]
[9:15] [applause]
[9:17] >> What a moment. What a moment. What a
[9:19] moment. I often say we're born to meet
[9:22] the rising of our lives. Did you see
[9:24] that as a rising moment or you had risen
[9:28] to a new level?
[9:30] Ooh, I I would probably say
[9:36] in my heart and mind,
[9:38] I was already there.
[9:41] >> And and the things just had to catch.
[9:43] >> Come on with it. Come on with it.
[9:45] >> And what was it like to be able to look
[9:47] out there and see your mother there?
[9:49] >> Amazing. You know, because a lot of
[9:51] people know my mom cuz she shows up to
[9:53] everything. But when when I first said I
[9:56] wanted to be an actor, my mother,
[9:58] >> she was very honest with me, she said,
[10:01] >> "That's not something I can help you
[10:03] do." So, the best bet is to be a nurse.
[10:07] You kindhearted. And I said, "Wait,
[10:09] whoa, whoa, whoa." I was like, "So, now
[10:10] I got to clean bed pants cuz you don't
[10:12] believe what the Most High told me to
[10:13] do, girl." But it wasn't that. It was
[10:16] just that she
[10:17] >> ain't cleaning no bed pans. Yeah. It was
[10:20] just that she was like, "I I don't know
[10:21] how to help you."
[10:23] >> You know what I mean? Like, we don't
[10:24] have anybody in our family. It's not
[10:26] like you can call, you know what I mean?
[10:28] >> No connections. Don't know what to do.
[10:30] >> I don't know what to do. I don't know
[10:31] how to how to help you. And I said,
[10:35] "Just love me."
[10:37] I mean, that's it.
[10:38] >> And that's what you did.
[10:40] >> Uhhuh.
[10:40] >> So, when you started out just trying to
[10:42] get whatever roles you could,
[10:44] >> okay,
[10:45] >> you end up with an Emmy, you end up with
[10:48] a hit series. How has fame impacted the
[10:52] way you see yourself?
[10:54] >> It supports the way I see myself.
[10:56] >> Okay.
[10:57] >> You know what I mean?
[10:57] >> Oh, interesting. I
[10:58] >> I I think it just supports the way I see
[11:01] myself
[11:01] >> cuz you already saw yourself as
[11:03] successful.
[11:04] >> Yes.
[11:05] >> Has been since you were 5 years old,
[11:07] Miss Lola.
[11:08] >> Yes. I saw I was I was on the Hollywood
[11:11] Walk of Fame about seven or eight and I
[11:14] see Edner. I don't know his name, but I
[11:16] know he's on TV. And I go over and I was
[11:19] like, "Sir, I know you're on TV, but I'm
[11:21] going to be on TV, too. And my name is
[11:24] going to be right here on this ground."
[11:26] And he was like, "Yeah, kid. Scram." And
[11:28] um when I he walked away, I said,
[11:29] "REMEMBER MY [screaming] NAME." AND my
[11:32] full circle moment was reaching out to
[11:35] Edner and he said, "I'm so grateful you
[11:40] didn't let a crotchety old man step on
[11:42] your dream."
[11:43] >> Wow.
[11:44] >> And he said, "Of course I know your
[11:46] name." and he hand drew a little star
[11:48] and he wrote my name through it and his
[11:50] team said unfortunately you know he's
[11:52] having some challenges he won't be able
[11:53] to come the day before my ceremony they
[11:56] called and said he will be there I
[11:58] couldn't even look this way because if I
[12:00] looked at him I would have cried my fake
[12:02] eyelashes off
[12:03] >> what a story
[12:04] >> a whole moment I was like are you
[12:07] kidding me right now sat right front row
[12:10] at my star ceremony and that's the last
[12:12] place I saw him and the the first and
[12:15] the last place I ever saw him was on the
[12:17] Hollywood Walk of Fame.
[12:18] >> Wow.
[12:19] >> Came to my afterparty and everything.
[12:21] >> Mr. Grant, I used to watch a Mary Tymore
[12:24] show every Saturday night. Wanted to be
[12:26] like Mary Tyler Moore and she is the
[12:28] reason why I ended up owning my own
[12:31] studio because of the little MTM at the
[12:34] end and the little cat goes through and
[12:35] it said Mary Tyler Moore Productions.
[12:39] >> And you said, "I'mma get that.
[12:40] >> I'm going to get that."
[12:41] >> Come on.
[12:41] >> Come on. I saw you driving down the
[12:44] street. Mhm.
[12:45] >> Mhm. And you was driving a very pretty
[12:47] car.
[12:48] >> Thank you.
[12:48] >> So, I want to know what's the greatest
[12:50] luxury you have afforded yourself when
[12:52] you knew that all your bills were paid
[12:56] >> and you weren't going to be any owing
[13:00] anybody anything. What's the greatest
[13:02] luxury? Ooh, the greatest lux That's a
[13:05] good question. First of all, I love my
[13:07] car, but
[13:10] I think my greatest luxury um is the
[13:14] when you invest in things that save you
[13:16] time. And so for me, that's like going
[13:18] through the airport and using a private
[13:21] >> Yes.
[13:22] >> way to go through and you know, travel
[13:24] as much travel,
[13:25] >> making yourself as comfortable as
[13:26] possible,
[13:27] >> right?
[13:28] >> That's your greatest luxury.
[13:29] >> Yeah, I think so. Was there a thing that
[13:32] you just wanted to buy that you thought
[13:34] if I can just get that thing?
[13:36] >> I don't think that I thought that, you
[13:38] know. I don't
[13:39] >> So, not even that car I saw you driving.
[13:41] >> That wasn't like a dream. That's a
[13:42] beautiful car.
[13:43] >> It wasn't a dream. It was a happy
[13:44] accident.
[13:45] >> Really?
[13:45] >> Yeah. My my uh makeup artist. Um
[13:49] >> And what color is that car? It's a
[13:50] >> rose gold.
[13:51] >> Okay.
[13:51] >> And and I love that car so much. But she
[13:54] was like, "Hey, you're starting a new
[13:55] Cuz every time I start a new job, I buy
[13:57] myself a present. I brought buy myself a
[13:59] gone. girl, you did that present. You
[14:01] [laughter] know what I mean? Go on,
[14:02] girl. You booked that. Go buy yourself
[14:04] something. And so she called me and
[14:08] said, "Oh, I know what you should get
[14:09] for your new I mean your present to
[14:11] yourself." I said, "What?" She was like,
[14:13] "Go get a Rolls-Royce." And I was like,
[14:16] "Hm, okay." And I went by there, but I
[14:19] saw something else. And when I saw that
[14:21] something else, I was like, "That has my
[14:24] name all over it."
[14:25] >> And it's going to BE IN ROSE GOLD.
[14:28] [screaming]
[14:28] >> YES. I love it so much.
[14:30] >> So, let's talk about All Fair for a
[14:31] moment.
[14:31] >> Yes.
[14:32] >> She's starring as the fierce and
[14:33] fabulous Emerald Green, a private
[14:36] investigator for an all female divorce
[14:38] firm on Hulu's hit show All Fair. Season
[14:41] 2 premieres November 4th. She stars
[14:44] alongside this wild list of famous
[14:45] actresses, Sarah Pollson, Naomi Watts,
[14:48] Tiana Taylor, the legendary Glen Close,
[14:51] and Kim Kardashian. Yep. It looks like
[14:53] y'all are having a Hulu hoot of a time.
[14:56] >> You know what? I love the ladies and
[14:59] what I love the most because here's most
[15:02] people who have worked with a you know a
[15:04] gaggle of broads know
[15:06] >> that the first season is like summer
[15:08] camp.
[15:08] >> Yeah.
[15:08] >> And then after that
[15:10] >> it kind of starts.
[15:11] >> Yeah. And also the demands the demands
[15:13] coming up. Right.
[15:14] >> Yeah. So, I would have to say that I am
[15:16] obsessed with these gals because
[15:18] everybody has their own thing going, you
[15:21] know, but we are so supportive of what
[15:23] each other is doing. Like, oh, how was
[15:26] your baby's thing? You know, when we
[15:28] come back to work or did you get to go
[15:30] on date night? What happened? Like, we
[15:31] just we genuinely like each other. So,
[15:35] it's not just like work friends. It's
[15:36] like I know I will know these women
[15:38] until they throw dirt on my face.
[15:41] [laughter]
[15:42] >> Really?
[15:42] >> Really?
[15:43] >> Yeah. So, the camaraderie is great. The
[15:45] chemistry, it's real.
[15:46] >> It's real.
[15:46] >> It's real. And I know you would say it
[15:48] if it wasn't.
[15:49] >> Oh, yeah.
[15:49] >> Oh, yeah. So, your character, Emerald
[15:51] Green, is is such a badass.
[15:53] >> Yes. Thank you, sweet baby Jesus.
[15:56] >> And Ni Ni Nash Betts is also such a
[15:59] badass. So, how much of it is acting and
[16:02] how much of it is you?
[16:03] >> Well, I always
[16:06] try to find a place where the character
[16:09] and I intersect.
[16:11] >> What What do we have in common? is my
[16:13] first thing because then I know I could
[16:14] take that and layer it
[16:16] >> into the performance. So where Emerald
[16:19] and I are different is that she takes a
[16:24] lot more than I probably would in real
[16:25] life, you know, and I was raised by a
[16:28] woman who said people shouldn't know you
[16:30] cussed them out until they got home.
[16:32] [laughter]
[16:34] So they got home and said I think that
[16:36] girl just cussed me out. Yeah. Emerald
[16:38] is [laughter]
[16:40] Emerald doesn't say a lot of things that
[16:42] Ni would say. She's a little, you know,
[16:45] more subdued than I am.
[16:46] >> So, Ni's actually more badass than
[16:48] Emerald. Okay. So, one of the things
[16:51] that is just so spectacular is the
[16:54] clothes.
[16:55] >> OH, YEAH.
[16:56] >> THE CLOTHES. SO, is everybody fighting
[16:58] to get their clothes, the designers to
[17:00] get their clothes on the show?
[17:02] >> No. It's more clothes around there than
[17:03] you can shake a stick at. And and
[17:05] >> do you all decide yourselves what your
[17:07] characters are going to wear?
[17:08] >> Well, they bring you a lot of things
[17:10] >> and you get to pick
[17:11] >> and you try on lots of things.
[17:13] >> Yeah.
[17:13] >> That's a whole day of trying on, you
[17:16] know, so you just have to try on lots of
[17:19] and we're just, you know, ladies in cute
[17:22] clothes saying mean things. [laughter]
[17:25] And that's the show. Everybody relax cuz
[17:27] you know the critics dragged us.
[17:28] >> I know the the critics dragged you. I
[17:31] mean like zero
[17:32] >> to the bottom. like zero on rotten
[17:34] tomatoes. But the but the people but the
[17:36] people said, "Uh-uh."
[17:37] >> Oh, but that's what my mama said. My
[17:38] mama said, "Y'all couldn't get one
[17:40] tomato." [laughter]
[17:42] >> I said, "Girl, THEY DIDN'T GIVE US a
[17:43] tomato."
[17:46] But the public said more. We get it. You
[17:49] know what I mean?
[17:50] >> Yeah.
[17:50] >> We are not over here trying to be law
[17:52] and order. Okay. That's not what this
[17:54] show is.
[17:55] >> We're not even trying to be Madlock. You
[17:57] know what I mean? We [laughter]
[17:59] >> Everybody relax.
[18:00] >> Yeah.
[18:00] >> You know what I mean?
[18:01] >> Yeah. The campiness is a part of it.
[18:04] That is it. That is the show. Okay. So,
[18:07] people love the clothes. They love the
[18:09] wigs. Do you all get to keep Do you get
[18:11] to keep anything? Can you say, "Well, I
[18:12] really like that Hermes bag."
[18:14] >> Well, first season they didn't let us
[18:16] keep anything because they said, "Hey,
[18:18] we don't know if we're going to come
[18:19] back, but if we do, we might want to put
[18:21] these slacks with a different thing or
[18:22] just, you know, so we didn't." Season
[18:25] two happened and we were all like,
[18:29] [laughter] "What? What does Ce say?
[18:31] Anything come for me? Can I Can I
[18:35] Can I take some of this home?
[18:37] >> That's a line from The Color Purple with
[18:39] Anything come for me?
[18:41] >> AND THEY SAID NO. [laughter]
[18:44] >> SO, we're still waiting.
[18:45] >> You're still waiting.
[18:46] >> Yeah.
[18:46] >> Well, our listeners heard you were
[18:48] coming on this podcast and we're so
[18:50] excited and have questions for you. Seth
[18:51] is joining us from Mississippi.
[18:54] >> Hey, Seth.
[18:55] >> Hi, Seth.
[18:56] >> Hi. How are you guys? Such a big Oprah
[18:58] and Ni. I love y'all.
[19:00] >> Thank you.
[19:00] >> Thank you.
[19:01] >> So, I have a question for Ni. Um, Ni,
[19:04] like you just talking about, the clothes
[19:06] is what drew me to the show originally.
[19:08] Do you have any favorite outfit,
[19:10] particularly that Emerald wore or that
[19:12] any of the other guards wore on the
[19:13] show?
[19:15] >> Oh, favorite outfits. It's so hard to
[19:17] choose because, you know, as soon as you
[19:20] find something that you like, then they
[19:21] bring something else and then it's
[19:23] something else. So, I like anything that
[19:26] uh Emerald had to wear with a hat or
[19:28] anything she wore with feathers cuz
[19:31] >> why not? Yeah.
[19:32] >> Why not?
[19:33] >> What do you love about the show? You
[19:34] said you were attracted to the show
[19:35] because of the clothes.
[19:36] >> Yeah. Yeah. And I've always loved like
[19:39] legal shows and then honestly what drew
[19:42] me to it was I'm a huge Kardashian fan.
[19:44] So, when I found out Kim Kardashian was
[19:46] going to be on it, I was like, "Oh, that
[19:48] caught my attention." And then the star
[19:49] study cast, like you said, Glen Close
[19:51] and then D Ni Nash, I was like, "Oh, got
[19:53] to tune in." And it's one of those shows
[19:55] that every [laughter]
[19:58] >> Yeah. fun fact, I had never seen an
[20:01] episode of the Kardashians before I met
[20:04] Kim.
[20:05] >> Really?
[20:05] >> Never. I'd never seen it. You know what
[20:08] I mean? And um Chris Jenner was walking
[20:10] by when I admitted that. I said, "I've
[20:12] never seen the Kardashians." And she
[20:14] turned over and said, "Thank God."
[20:16] [laughter]
[20:17] I said, "Girl, you might wouldn't have
[20:18] showed up."
[20:21] >> Didn't she have a party at her house for
[20:23] all of you all?
[20:24] >> She Yeah, it was for Glenn. Really?
[20:26] Because Kim had never seen Fatal
[20:28] Attraction.
[20:28] >> Oh, that's
[20:30] >> we brought everybody together in our
[20:32] pajamas and we watched Fatal Attraction
[20:34] with Glenn close.
[20:35] >> Wow.
[20:36] >> That was one of my greatest memories. I
[20:38] mean, just to watch her watch herself,
[20:41] you know what I mean? And she was so
[20:43] sexy and beautiful. She was down there
[20:45] eating her popcorn like that's me.
[20:48] >> Yeah.
[20:49] >> Thank you, Seth. Thank you so much.
[20:52] >> N Thank you guys so much.
[20:53] >> Had joining us from Atlanta. What's your
[20:56] question for Ni?
[20:58] >> I love you too, of course. Um, but my
[21:00] question is mainly around so we know
[21:03] Emerald is a gem. She's vibrant. She's
[21:04] fabulous. All these great things, but
[21:06] she's also very real. And I want to know
[21:09] how do you tap into that character
[21:11] because she goes through some real
[21:12] stuff, you Yeah. Well, you know, I first
[21:16] of all, she's a mother of three. I'm a
[21:18] mother of three,
[21:19] >> right?
[21:19] >> So, when I'm in scenes with my boys, I
[21:22] my TV children Yeah.
[21:24] >> I talk to them in the same vernacular I
[21:27] use with my own, you know what I mean?
[21:29] So, I think that helps it really feel
[21:32] grounded because we all know that black
[21:34] mother that'll tell you, I will slap the
[21:35] black off of you right off your face.
[21:37] You know what I mean? And stuff like
[21:38] that. And you like, what? But we know
[21:41] because we know those ladies with the
[21:43] grandmothers and the aunties in our
[21:44] lives. So I just try to lean into who I
[21:47] really am as a mother with that
[21:49] character.
[21:49] >> What do you love about the show, Hadia?
[21:51] >> I love what you all are talking about. I
[21:53] love that it is not super serious.
[21:55] Everybody looks fabulous. I'm here for a
[21:57] good time, not a long time. And that's
[21:59] all I want to see. I'm not trying to
[22:00] figure out, you know, to solve a crazy
[22:02] case or anything like that. I like
[22:05] vibrant.
[22:05] >> You like the camp. You like the camp.
[22:07] >> I love the camp. You like Sarah Pollson
[22:10] getting up on the table and putting her
[22:12] fingers in.
[22:12] >> Sarah Pawson getting on the table.
[22:14] >> Yeah, you like that. Thank you. I see
[22:16] you got your little pink shoes on the
[22:18] side, too, honey. Yes. Fashion. Hello.
[22:21] >> Thank you.
[22:22] >> I One of the things people love so much
[22:24] about it are the wigs, too. And you have
[22:27] your own collection of You could compete
[22:30] with Dolly. I think
[22:32] >> maybe I should be a little bit more
[22:33] ashamed of this, but I'm not. I there's
[22:37] something that happens in season 2 and
[22:39] the show called me and said, "Hey, can
[22:42] we uh borrow a few wigs for this scene?"
[22:45] And I said, "How many do you need?" And
[22:48] they said, "1 150." I said, "OKAY."
[22:54] [screaming and crying]
[22:54] And still had room to grow. I'm It's a
[22:57] sickness. It's a sickness. I I get wigs
[23:00] delivered to my house every week. I'm
[23:02] sick. Lord, help me. I'm sick. You have
[23:04] a wig addiction.
[23:05] >> I'm sick.
[23:06] >> Wow.
[23:07] >> I'm sick.
[23:07] >> So you you must have a room for them.
[23:10] >> I do. [laughter]
[23:12] >> Okay. You have a room for them.
[23:15] >> Wait a minute.
[23:16] >> NOT A CLOSET for them. A room for them.
[23:18] >> And this is not and I don't You know
[23:20] what I mean? I have prayed for everybody
[23:21] and called everybody when California,
[23:23] you know, we had those bad fires. But we
[23:26] were on alert. And so they said pack
[23:27] just in case. So, I had two trunks full
[23:30] to the top and my purse over my shoulder
[23:32] and I put the dog on the leash and and
[23:35] my spouse was like, "Okay, well, what is
[23:37] this stuff you grabbed?" Cuz it was like
[23:39] a grab and go. And I said, "My wigs and
[23:42] my two Emmys. Let's go." [laughter]
[23:44] And a picture of my grandmom is in my
[23:46] purse. Let's go. She was like, "What?" I
[23:50] was like, "I if you know what I mean, I
[23:52] still got to go to work. Come on."
[23:53] [laughter]
[23:54] So, that's it. I've admitted it. Oh, you
[23:58] you were just mentioning your own
[23:59] children a moment ago. You play all
[24:01] kinds of mothers on screen. Single
[24:03] mothers, working mothers, alcoholic
[24:05] mothers, a mom in the FBI. And so, what
[24:08] has what has motherhood offscreen really
[24:13] taught you
[24:13] >> to be honest?
[24:14] >> Yes. With Danielle Dominique and the
[24:15] lovely Dia. Yeah.
[24:17] >> Motherhood has taught me that no matter
[24:19] what you do in life,
[24:21] >> your children are going to need therapy
[24:24] because of you. They're going to need
[24:26] therapy because of you. Just save the
[24:28] money and put it to the side right now.
[24:29] New mothers, put your money to the side
[24:31] because I don't care what you do. Nurse
[24:32] the baby, stay up with the baby, give
[24:34] the baby, put them in school, do this,
[24:35] do that. Eventually, they going to come
[24:37] back and look you in your face and tell
[24:39] you something wasn't right and they need
[24:41] to go lay down on somebody's couch and I
[24:43] just accepted it. So, I keep the little
[24:45] money to the side. [laughter]
[24:46] >> Oh my goodness. Really?
[24:48] >> Cuz I know they going to go.
[24:49] >> Really?
[24:49] >> Therapy on speed. Now, what what kind of
[24:51] therapist would you like to hear? What
[24:52] do you want to deal with? And you you
[24:53] you carry no guilt about it.
[24:55] >> No,
[24:55] >> no,
[24:56] >> no, no, no, no, no. Because what what is
[24:57] guilt? Is a useless emotion because it
[24:59] is. But I had that first baby when I was
[25:01] what, 21, 22. I didn't know what I was
[25:04] doing. I picked up the baby, had the
[25:06] baby right here, and put my beeper on on
[25:08] my hip and was like walking toward the
[25:10] door and I said, "They going to let me
[25:12] leave with this thing.
[25:13] >> They don't even know me. The people
[25:15] don't know me now. [laughter]
[25:17] They let me leave with this baby." I
[25:19] didn't know what I was doing. So you
[25:21] admit to yourself and to them you didn't
[25:24] know what you were doing. So you made
[25:26] some mistakes and so now they need
[25:28] therapy.
[25:29] >> Yeah. I was marginal,
[25:31] you know, at best. I I And and that's
[25:34] the truth.
[25:34] >> Why do you say that? Why do you say
[25:35] that?
[25:36] >> I just think I could have done things.
[25:39] Well, here's what happened. When you
[25:41] compare mothering
[25:43] today
[25:44] >> Yeah.
[25:45] >> to mothering 30 years ago, 40 years ago,
[25:48] >> right? That was a different kind of
[25:50] mother, right? And then today they like,
[25:52] "Oh, you have to be gentle parent." I
[25:53] said, "Gentle."
[25:54] >> Gentle parent.
[25:55] >> I skipped that part. I was That wasn't
[25:57] me. I didn't I No one taught me that. No
[26:00] one told me that. Like that's the the
[26:02] new way. And so when I
[26:03] >> But you're negotiating to put something
[26:05] down.
[26:05] >> Just do what I say.
[26:06] >> Yeah.
[26:07] >> Right. That's the mother I am. Do what I
[26:10] tell you to do. Yeah.
[26:11] >> Huh. And that's it. And that's all. And
[26:13] mine is going to be the last word.
[26:14] >> But what's your relationship with your
[26:16] children like? Amazing. It's amazing now
[26:20] because I mother them in a different way
[26:23] and I I date them separately. [laughter]
[26:25] >> Yeah.
[26:26] >> You know what I mean? So each child can
[26:28] have their own oneonone
[26:31] >> relationship. One-on-one time.
[26:33] >> So a [clears throat] few weeks ago, I
[26:34] see this video pop up on my feed. You
[26:36] and your wife Jessica celebrating your
[26:39] six-year wedding anniversary. Let's
[26:42] watch the surprise Jess Jessica had for
[26:44] you,
[26:46] >> guys.
[26:47] This is what happened on my 6y year
[26:50] wedding anniversary. What? What is
[26:53] happening? What is happening?
[26:56] >> You call JB my wife. I lovingly call her
[27:00] my husband.
[27:01] >> Your husband?
[27:02] >> Yeah.
[27:03] >> Okay, then I shall call her your
[27:04] husband. [laughter] Okay. So, I This is
[27:07] the thing. I think that you and Jessica
[27:10] are so wonderful together. Really? And
[27:13] I've been in private with you all in
[27:16] public and it it's the same. And there's
[27:18] nobody who can deny that that is real.
[27:21] But I can also say nobody was more
[27:24] shocked than I was. [laughter]
[27:27] >> Well, you know, you were one of the
[27:28] first people I called though.
[27:30] >> Yeah, I know. BUT NOBODY WAS MORE
[27:32] SHOCKED THAN I WAS. And this and let me
[27:34] tell the people why. Because Ni was at
[27:37] my house in 2019.
[27:39] >> Oh, look.
[27:40] >> The year before. [screaming]
[27:42] Yeah, us scooters and hiking and having
[27:46] an all girls night.
[27:48] >> Ava behind us.
[27:50] I'm waving like she right there.
[27:52] >> Okay. Okay. And you talking about you
[27:54] you had written a book. And in that
[27:56] book, it's hard to fight naked.
[27:58] >> It is.
[27:59] >> And how to keep a man happy. There's
[28:01] some chapters on that with very explicit
[28:03] details on how to make him happy every
[28:06] morning. And you were telling me, I
[28:09] remember you telling me at the dinner
[28:10] table about it and you were telling me
[28:12] at the time how you just love men. You
[28:15] said I love boys.
[28:16] >> I I said I love them so much.
[28:18] >> You said you love them so much. So that
[28:20] is why nobody was more shocked than I
[28:24] was. What happened?
[28:25] >> I was more shocked than you were. You
[28:27] Okay. Okay. [laughter]
[28:28] But you were telling me all these things
[28:30] about how to keep your man happy. What
[28:32] happened? Well, um,
[28:36] you know what? I love boys and until I
[28:39] didn't, I guess. But it's not even that
[28:42] I don't love them anymore. I
[28:46] Jessica I am attracted to because she is
[28:49] the most beautiful soul I have ever met
[28:51] in my life.
[28:52] >> So, you all were friends before?
[28:53] >> Yeah, friends for like four and a half
[28:55] years. I was married. She was in a
[28:56] relationship. We never crossed any line.
[28:59] We never made the eyes. You know how
[29:01] somebody hug you and put their hand at
[29:02] the small of your back? No, none of
[29:04] that. When I No, because if it was,
[29:07] >> I know her enough to know she would have
[29:09] never married me because she would have
[29:10] thought, you know,
[29:12] >> why would you do that if you were
[29:13] married, right? Yeah.
[29:14] >> And she never would have married. Yeah.
[29:16] >> Yeah. But she just want we were hanging
[29:18] out, which was not unusual. Yeah. In New
[29:21] York, eating crabs, drinking wine, and
[29:24] my stomach got hot. I said, "Wait a
[29:26] minute." Because that only happens when
[29:28] I like boys. Why is my stomach hot?
[29:32] And then I was like, uhoh, this is a
[29:34] >> Was it just the two of you?
[29:35] >> We were in the restaurant and I was like
[29:38] on to myself, my stomach is hot. I said,
[29:41] girl, get from over there. In my mind,
[29:44] this is a woman and it's my friend. Why
[29:46] is my stomach hot? Like it's hot when I
[29:48] like boys.
[29:50] And
[29:52] it I said, "Well, let me
[29:53] >> So, okay. So, what does that mean? It's
[29:55] like a
[29:55] >> like I'm I'm attractual like sexual
[29:58] attracted to you. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
[29:59] Okay.
[30:00] >> You know what I mean? You forget it.
[30:01] >> Yeah.
[30:02] >> Yeah.
[30:02] >> Yeah.
[30:03] >> And I didn't And [laughter] it it scared
[30:04] me.
[30:08] >> It scared me. And so I said, "Wait a
[30:09] minute. I got to let me try to manage
[30:12] what I'm feeling. Maybe I could keep the
[30:14] night going a little longer and see if
[30:16] it'll go away." So I said, "I'm going
[30:19] back to my house to watch one of my
[30:20] favorite movies if you want to go." And
[30:23] she said, "All right, Cora, I'm down." I
[30:28] said, "Okay, Kora."
[30:29] >> Yeah. She calls me Kora. And once I got
[30:31] back there and the movie was off, my
[30:34] stomach stayed hot the whole time.
[30:36] Uh-oh.
[30:36] >> Uh-oh. I was like, "Oh."
[30:38] >> Had this ever happened to you before?
[30:40] >> With boys.
[30:42] >> With boys. Only with boys.
[30:44] >> Only with boys, you know. And even Well,
[30:46] I mean, you know, I'm married to a
[30:48] woman, but she is very handsome. I don't
[30:50] know. You know what I mean? But my
[30:53] stomach got hot and I was like, "It's
[30:54] official. I really am attracted to this
[30:58] person. And it was no, I had no more
[31:01] tricks left. So, I got up and walked her
[31:02] to the door. No more movies to watch, no
[31:04] more nothing. Thanks for coming. See you
[31:05] next time. And when I hugged her, I
[31:08] kissed her on the cheek, which was not
[31:10] unusual.
[31:11] >> Yeah.
[31:12] >> You know, like, bye, girl. You know,
[31:13] whatever. But I kissed her
[31:16] and my tongue came out a little bit.
[31:18] Oprah. [laughter]
[31:26] And then [laughter]
[31:27] when I let her go, she looked at me and
[31:29] said, "Want to go lay down?" And I've
[31:31] been laying down ever since, girl.
[31:35] [screaming]
[31:37] [laughter]
[31:38] >> Yeah. So, yeah, that happened and this
[31:40] happened and here we are. So from that
[31:43] moment on when you kissed her and your
[31:45] tongue came out a little
[31:46] >> just a little look like a baby fleck
[31:49] >> like a little and your tongue your
[31:51] tongue came out a little bit. You all
[31:53] have been together since then. It just
[31:55] was on. It was
[31:56] >> well I ghosted her first because I
[31:58] really felt like I want to keep our
[32:00] friendship
[32:01] >> and if I mess that up because I want
[32:03] this person to know me to the dirt and
[32:05] if I messed it up by doing this thing I
[32:08] will never forgive myself cuz I always
[32:11] want to know you and be in good standing
[32:14] with you.
[32:15] >> Yeah.
[32:16] >> And um I just stopped calling stopped
[32:18] wouldn't answer
[32:19] >> after that one time wouldn't answer the
[32:21] phone
[32:21] >> cuz that scared you.
[32:22] >> Yeah. Yeah.
[32:23] >> Mhm. And cuz I wanted her to think well
[32:26] of me. And she called me one day and
[32:29] said, "You can trust me." And I knew it.
[32:34] And I was like,
[32:36] "Come see me." And from that point on,
[32:39] we've been together ever since.
[32:41] >> Okay. So after that little Your tongue
[32:44] came out, you were afraid
[32:46] that this might be first of all afraid
[32:48] of your own feelings.
[32:51] No, I like my feelings and I I like
[32:53] feeling like I feel. Okay. But I was
[32:55] afraid that it would mess up our
[32:57] friendship.
[32:58] >> Oh, your friendship. Okay.
[32:59] >> That's what I was afraid of. You know
[33:00] what I mean? I'm a honeybee. Okay.
[33:02] >> Okay. So, you know what I mean? People
[33:04] people want to find me and they don't
[33:06] and I can't even stay single if I wanted
[33:08] to, Oprah. They they they want to marry
[33:10] me so fast. [laughter] I mean, that's
[33:11] just, you know, my mama was a honey bee.
[33:13] My grandmama was a honey bee. It's
[33:15] nothing you could do.
[33:16] >> There's nothing you can do when you're a
[33:17] honey bee.
[33:18] >> Yeah. I think that there's some women
[33:19] who have that.
[33:21] >> Yeah,
[33:21] >> I have it.
[33:22] >> You have it?
[33:23] >> Yeah. I mean, and and Yeah, I do.
[33:26] >> We're just men and women are attracted
[33:29] to you. But had you been attracted to
[33:31] another woman before?
[33:32] >> No.
[33:33] >> Never.
[33:34] >> And another woman not even attracted to
[33:35] you that you knew of?
[33:37] >> I don't know.
[33:37] >> Okay.
[33:38] >> You know what I mean? Because I wasn't
[33:39] really focused on that. Yeah.
[33:41] >> Cuz I told you.
[33:42] >> Cuz you like boys.
[33:43] >> Cuz I love boys.
[33:44] >> You love boys.
[33:44] >> Yeah.
[33:45] >> Okay. So,
[33:47] the decision to go public, I mean, I
[33:50] remember when you were all on the cover
[33:51] of Essence. The decision to go public.
[33:54] Why did you make that decision?
[33:56] >> Well, you've been around Jessica.
[33:58] >> Yeah.
[33:59] >> You have been around her.
[34:01] >> You can't hide that cute thing in the
[34:03] corner. [laughter] We can't live in the
[34:05] dark corners. Now, take a look at this.
[34:07] Look at this. This cute thing, you know?
[34:10] No, I could. I I I never wanted to do
[34:13] that. And and I got flack online because
[34:16] people were like, "You never posted, you
[34:19] know, your husband when you were married
[34:20] to him and now you married to her and
[34:21] you just got her all on your page." And
[34:23] I was like, "That's not true." I posted
[34:25] the relationships that I was in, but
[34:26] nobody cared.
[34:28] >> Nobody cared until I married this one.
[34:30] >> Yeah.
[34:30] >> And now they, you know,
[34:32] >> Yeah.
[34:32] >> they all on it. And I'm like, well,
[34:34] yeah.
[34:35] >> Okay. So, I can see that something
[34:38] settled in you. And even you posted that
[34:41] this is the love forever. You seem more
[34:43] settled. You seem more at peace with
[34:46] yourself. You feel like you've come home
[34:48] to a part of yourself.
[34:50] >> And you say that Jessica, your husband,
[34:54] is um is forever loved. So, how has that
[34:58] love, your love together enhanced or
[35:01] elevated your life?
[35:03] >> Well, I'll tell you. Um I often say that
[35:07] she is the best thing that has ever
[35:09] happened to me. And I wasn't a person
[35:13] who had to necessarily come out because
[35:16] I wasn't in anywhere to come out of. It
[35:20] was just that I met the most beautiful
[35:22] soul and I said, "Hey, this is who I
[35:24] love right now. This is my person. This
[35:26] is my forever thing." And I feel like
[35:29] when you are loved by someone who does
[35:32] not need you to change to satiate them
[35:36] is different because my situations
[35:39] before always felt like this this this
[35:41] is really good but can you do something
[35:43] with that?
[35:44] >> You know what I mean? Can you can you
[35:46] tone this down a pinch?
[35:47] >> You know what I mean? Can you? So, it
[35:49] was never like this love is like a full
[35:52] accepting of who I am. Um, and giving me
[35:57] grace where I need it, putting a battery
[35:59] in my back where I need it, you know,
[36:02] loving me in a way that is so complete.
[36:06] And I think it has elevated both of our
[36:09] lives just because people and it's even
[36:12] straight people will say, I want to love
[36:15] like that. You know,
[36:16] >> I think it's so interesting the way each
[36:18] time you've described it, you were
[36:20] saying it's about the a soul coming
[36:22] together, a soul.
[36:24] >> I said to her, I will find you in every
[36:26] lifetime
[36:28] because you're my person.
[36:29] >> Wow.
[36:31] >> Wow.
[36:32] >> I'm not going to cry my fake eyelashes.
[36:34] >> Okay. Okay. I know you're not. I know. I
[36:36] know. I know you're not. And so is this
[36:39] the first time you feel that you've been
[36:41] with somebody who you know that we know
[36:43] that famous line um from the Tom Cruz
[36:46] movie you complete me but not just
[36:49] complete you but everything I've ever
[36:51] seen and every time I've always ever
[36:53] seen you all out together.
[36:55] >> I can see that this is somebody who
[36:57] wants the best for you
[36:59] >> wants the best for you. Yeah. who never
[37:02] feels like they're in your shadow or
[37:04] never feels like they're, you know, not
[37:07] getting enough attention. I see her
[37:09] glowing and smiling because of the
[37:11] attention you are getting.
[37:13] >> Yeah. It's a two-way street.
[37:15] >> It's a two-way street.
[37:16] >> It's a two-way street.
[37:17] >> Yeah.
[37:17] >> Mhm.
[37:18] >> Yeah.
[37:18] >> You know, she performed at something and
[37:21] um you know, I had big shoes on and I
[37:24] was dragging the amp across the stage
[37:26] and somebody was like, "No, no, no, no,
[37:27] no, Miss Ni. you know, you you you know,
[37:30] you you Nissi Nash, you you can go sit
[37:32] down. And I was like, no. I said, I'm
[37:34] Cora Betts right now, and I'mma go get
[37:37] this amp over here. I sat right in the
[37:39] front. I was looking at them background
[37:40] singles like,
[37:42] [laughter]
[37:43] >> you know, get it together, you know? So,
[37:45] we I think it's a there's definitely a
[37:48] collaboring in in um in the the runway
[37:52] to greatness.
[37:53] >> Oh, I love that. Oh, that's a great
[37:55] quote. There's a collaboring. Uh-huh.
[37:58] >> In the runway
[38:00] >> to greatness. So, we both have to,
[38:04] you know,
[38:04] >> Yeah. Especially in a relationship,
[38:06] there has to be a co- lababoring. And I
[38:09] think so many women in particular find
[38:11] like uh, you know, recognize that
[38:15] they're doing a lot of the laboring and
[38:17] there's not a lot of co going on.
[38:19] >> Yeah.
[38:19] >> Yeah.
[38:20] >> But I feel like that has to do with um,
[38:22] you know, how we were raised.
[38:24] >> You know what I mean? And you saw your
[38:25] mama do all the things. She got the baby
[38:27] on the hip. She's stirring the grits.
[38:29] She She You know what I mean?
[38:31] >> She's doing this
[38:32] >> leaving the houses and going to work and
[38:33] coming back and making sure everybody
[38:34] has everything they need.
[38:35] >> And when you see women move like that,
[38:38] you think that's the way it has to be.
[38:40] >> But I am very proud of Jessica and I
[38:44] because we created a life that we don't
[38:46] need to escape from. The life
[38:48] [clears throat] that we've curated for
[38:49] ourselves is so delicious. You know what
[38:52] I mean? We could be in the house for a
[38:55] week straight. I mean, my mother even
[38:56] asked me the other day. She said, "Well,
[38:58] do you guys cuz I know we you guys
[39:00] travel together, so if you got to go
[39:02] somewhere, she got to go somewhere. Do
[39:03] y'all ever just want to stay home
[39:05] because y'all, you know, are tired of
[39:07] being around the other person?" I said,
[39:08] "Who?" I said, "I would live in that
[39:11] girl's skin if I could. Are you crazy?"
[39:14] >> Wow. And how did the rest of the family
[39:16] receive her?
[39:18] >> My my dear, my baby was like, "Oh my
[39:21] god, this is so cool. I'm going to have
[39:23] two moms and a dad." The middle girl
[39:26] said, "Girl, if you like it, I love it."
[39:28] And my son said, "Mama, you going
[39:31] through a midlife crisis." [laughter]
[39:34] Actually, I've never been more clear,
[39:36] son.
[39:36] >> Never been more clear. And what did your
[39:38] mother say? [clears throat]
[39:39] >> My mother was again afraid because if
[39:45] you go out in the world and you tell
[39:46] people what you got going on, I can't
[39:48] protect you. What if they're mean to
[39:50] you? What if what if your job your
[39:52] opportunities dry up? what you you you
[39:55] can't tell people what goes on in in
[39:57] your bedroom. You you you just you know
[39:58] what I mean? Don't do it. Again, trying
[40:01] to protect me.
[40:02] >> Yeah.
[40:02] >> You know, but I said, "Well, now you
[40:05] know I'm going to do what I want to do."
[40:06] Right.
[40:06] >> Right. Right. Did you ever think for a
[40:09] second that your opportunities may
[40:12] change or it would alter the way
[40:15] Hollywood saw you?
[40:17] >> I never gave it a thought. Somebody said
[40:20] to me in my family like, "You can't do
[40:22] this. If you go out and you you you you
[40:24] come out here with this with this girl,
[40:26] you will never eat lunch in this town
[40:28] again. I said this town. [laughter]
[40:32] Let's just make sure we talking about
[40:34] the same town.
[40:36] But no, I never I it never I never even
[40:40] gave it a second thought because you
[40:42] know why I didn't? Because I remember
[40:44] what was stamped on the canvas of my
[40:46] imagination.
[40:47] >> Wow, girl. So, I didn't have to get in
[40:49] my flesh and be like, "Oh, no. Worrying
[40:52] about something or having anxiety about
[40:54] something that ain't even happened yet."
[40:55] I'm like, "No, the Most High created me
[40:57] to be an artist, so I'mma keep making
[40:59] art." Now, I don't know where I'm going
[41:01] to make it or how I'm going to do it,
[41:02] but it's going to go. It's going to
[41:03] happen.
[41:04] >> Yeah.
[41:04] >> Yeah. So, I wasn't even caught up in the
[41:07] what the world has to say. I say maybe
[41:09] about 3,000 people unfollowed me when I
[41:13] posted my wedding photo. And then within
[41:15] a matter of a week, like I don't know,
[41:19] 30,000
[41:20] >> Wow.
[41:21] >> people followed me. I don't know, you
[41:24] know, and I I don't really care about it
[41:26] too much cuz I'm still going to do what
[41:28] I want to do.
[41:28] >> You are actually doing in your life
[41:30] right now. I don't know if a lot of
[41:32] people know this. You're doing that
[41:33] thing that so many women in particular
[41:36] in your generation are having to do.
[41:38] Caretaking.
[41:39] >> Yes.
[41:39] >> And you're caretaking
[41:41] >> for your father. Mhm.
[41:43] >> And I want to know what impact that has
[41:45] had on you
[41:48] and also on your family cuz a lot of
[41:51] people are going through it.
[41:53] >> It was very um interesting because my
[41:56] father had fallen and was in the
[41:59] hospital and then from there they
[42:01] released him to some rehab. I just got
[42:04] the information kind of late. I'm like
[42:05] wait what? So, I go to Vegas thinking
[42:08] that, oh, let me go by his apartment
[42:10] that he lives in with his twin brother
[42:12] and get his passport, his bank
[42:14] statement, so we can start to figure
[42:16] this out.
[42:17] >> And my uncle was worse than my father
[42:18] when I got there.
[42:20] >> What I'm saying, I couldn't even cry in
[42:23] the moment because it was so jarring to
[42:26] see. And I knew that if I didn't hold it
[42:28] together, I was not going to make it
[42:31] through. And I was with um my makeup
[42:33] artist. She took one look at my uncle.
[42:35] Tears started streaming down. She turned
[42:37] around and walked outside. She pulled it
[42:39] together and came back. So now we taking
[42:41] two of y'all. He was down so bad that we
[42:43] had to wrap him up in plastic to even
[42:45] get him in the car.
[42:46] >> What? It was terrible. I mean, cried my
[42:49] eyes out. And then his family, children,
[42:52] you know, they did not want to help me.
[42:55] And I said, I came out here for my
[42:57] father. I don't even know what. and they
[43:00] just were like, "We don't we don't want
[43:02] to have anything to do with it." So now
[43:04] I had times two. This one is in here.
[43:07] This one is here. Got to get a
[43:09] transport. Got to bring it back. And I
[43:10] will tell you about that part. Um it is
[43:14] not for the week. It is not for the
[43:17] week. And I wish that the world had more
[43:19] grace and more financial resources for
[43:22] people who step into these situations.
[43:25] And it's expensive. And the better the
[43:27] care, the more expensive it is. But if
[43:29] you want to throw your loved one in a
[43:30] rat shack, you can pay $2 or $3, but
[43:33] that's not going to give them the care
[43:34] that they need. And so I I I pray for
[43:38] anyone who steps into that place. Um I
[43:41] was I had so much anxiety and so much
[43:45] emotional turmoil um within myself. And
[43:51] again, I'm just grateful that, you know,
[43:54] my mom and my spouse were able to help
[43:58] me, you know, navigate it all. It's But
[44:01] it's very, very
[44:02] >> What did you learn about yourself during
[44:03] this experience? Because being in a
[44:05] trial like that, having to take care of,
[44:08] >> first of all, now you're taking care of
[44:09] an uncle that you didn't even know, and
[44:13] I don't know what your relationships
[44:14] were with them before. I think it's hard
[44:16] for a lot of people who are listening to
[44:18] us, watching us right now when you were
[44:21] asked to step in and take care of
[44:23] somebody who wasn't there to take care
[44:26] of you the way you needed to be taken
[44:28] care of.
[44:28] >> Say it louder for the people in the
[44:30] back. [laughter]
[44:31] >> I think
[44:31] >> because that's a fact. You know what I
[44:33] mean? Not now in my case, you know what
[44:35] I'm saying? The truth is the truth. Not
[44:37] a school jacket, not a pair of shoes,
[44:41] not a nothing.
[44:43] Right. Yeah.
[44:44] >> And now everything that you need,
[44:48] I have to supply. So there is a part of
[44:51] you that has to accept it for what it
[44:54] is. Because when you start to continue
[44:56] to replay what it should be,
[44:58] >> Yeah.
[44:59] >> you automatically are going to be out of
[45:00] order with yourself cuz it should be
[45:02] this and I don't and it should be that.
[45:04] What is it, baby? Say what it is
[45:07] >> and let's move forward. That's what I
[45:09] had to do because lamenting all of the
[45:12] times that this didn't happen and that
[45:13] didn't happen. It it wasn't serving me.
[45:16] >> Yeah. And so what do you want to say to
[45:18] people who are dealing with that, those
[45:19] parents who weren't there for them, you
[45:22] stepped in and did what you needed to
[45:24] do. I mean, I know a lot of people who
[45:27] feel like, well, they weren't there for
[45:29] me. Do I need to do that?
[45:31] >> Yeah. Well, I mean, that's my situation
[45:33] with the uncle. Those children don't
[45:35] want to do anything. Um, and what I
[45:38] would tell people is to make sure that
[45:42] you
[45:43] um have a place that you can go and talk
[45:47] through it and just work through it in
[45:49] your mind because that that that is a
[45:51] very helping thing. You know, sometimes
[45:54] Jessica just take me in her arms and
[45:55] pray for me. I you know what I mean?
[45:57] >> Well, the thing about you is Miss Range
[46:00] is that your range is so great. We never
[46:04] know how you're going to show up. Is
[46:07] there an ideal role? If you could have
[46:10] the dream role, the dream character of
[46:12] your life, what would that look like?
[46:14] Cuz I know you're a big manifesttor. Um,
[46:17] [clears throat]
[46:19] playing Oprah Winfrey in a biopic. Just
[46:21] kidding. Just kidding. Um, I feel like
[46:26] one of the things that has escaped me up
[46:28] until this point is playing a villain.
[46:30] >> Ah,
[46:31] >> I mean, and you know, you have different
[46:32] variations of that. you have a villain
[46:34] in the Marvel world, but you also have
[46:36] like Devil Wears Prada or Kella Deville.
[46:39] >> Um, I just, you know, I think that is
[46:42] something that I would really be looking
[46:44] forward to.
[46:45] >> I love those videos. I don't know who
[46:47] needs to hear this.
[46:48] >> I don't know who needs to hear this.
[46:51] >> Morning, y'all. Morning, y'all. Morning,
[46:53] y'all. I don't know who needs to hear
[46:55] this. I don't know who needs to hear
[46:57] this, but if you want to be in a
[46:59] successful long-term relationship, the
[47:03] best way to get there is to date people
[47:07] who want what you want. Hey, I don't
[47:10] know who needs to hear this, but the
[47:12] reason why you have two ears and one
[47:14] mouth is because you're supposed to
[47:16] listen twice as much as you speak. Hey,
[47:20] >> do those just come to you?
[47:22] >> Yes. I get dressed in the morning, they
[47:24] do my hair and makeup. When I go in the
[47:25] trailer, I just put my camera up and
[47:27] whatever the freerange thought is of the
[47:30] day while I'm doing my last
[47:32] >> I don't know who needs to hear this. The
[47:33] reason you have two ears and one mouth
[47:36] is because you're supposed to listen
[47:38] >> twice as much as you speak.
[47:42] >> I love that.
[47:43] >> Yeah.
[47:43] >> How has social media changed the way you
[47:47] relate to and communicate with the
[47:49] people who admire and adore you? You
[47:53] know, I try to be as present as I can.
[47:58] You know what I mean? I'm not a girl
[47:59] who's on social media all day, but I
[48:01] will check in and if people say things,
[48:04] I'll comment to you back and, you know,
[48:06] and all of those kinds of things. But
[48:08] it's the wild wild west. It's such a new
[48:12] thing. It's like, what is happening, you
[48:15] know? Um,
[48:15] >> do you enjoy it? Do you enjoy it?
[48:18] >> You know what I do? I I enjoy it
[48:20] especially when I get to do fun things
[48:23] with my children.
[48:24] >> Okay.
[48:25] >> So when if we do bits or my daughter
[48:27] wants me to learn a dance or you know
[48:30] something like that, you know, but it it
[48:32] can be dark. But I try to stay away from
[48:34] the from the dark side,
[48:37] >> the crazy stuff. Is there are are are
[48:39] there moments too obviously because we
[48:41] don't see everything that you feel are
[48:44] sacred or private that you wouldn't want
[48:48] to share that you don't share?
[48:50] >> I was about to say I don't share when
[48:52] I'm skinny dipping but that's a lie.
[48:54] [laughter]
[48:56] That's a lie. Um uh
[48:59] >> do you think there's some things that
[49:00] shouldn't be shared?
[49:01] >> I do.
[49:02] >> Yeah. Like I'm not a person who if I had
[49:04] a challenge with somebody, you know, my
[49:07] spouse, a hairdresser or anything, would
[49:09] go to social media, take it to social
[49:11] media. And I feel like a lot of people
[49:13] just feel like whatever is happening,
[49:15] >> you don't even have a chance to work it
[49:17] out
[49:18] >> before you get online and trying to work
[49:21] it out online
[49:22] >> with people who don't even know you.
[49:23] >> Don't know you.
[49:24] >> Yeah.
[49:25] >> Okay. So, I have a few rapid questions
[49:27] to ask you. Okay. Perfect night with
[49:30] your hers bund.
[49:33] >> Perfect night with JB um would be skinny
[49:38] dipping, drinking expensive champagne.
[49:40] Yeah.
[49:41] >> Um and eating crabs.
[49:43] >> Eating crabs. Okay. Early bird or night
[49:46] owl?
[49:46] >> Early bird.
[49:47] >> Favorite moment on set with Kim
[49:48] Kardashian?
[49:50] >> Kim is greedy and I'm I'm She's greedy.
[49:54] You're greedy, friend. And I have so
[49:57] many videos on my phone of her eating.
[50:00] Yeah.
[50:00] >> And you would Where does it go?
[50:02] >> Where does it Where does it go?
[50:02] >> Where does it go? And people who think
[50:04] she don't eat is not true. Greedy.
[50:07] >> Yeah.
[50:07] >> Yeah.
[50:08] >> Okay. Comedy or drama. Do you prefer?
[50:11] >> Drama.
[50:12] >> Okay. All's fair co-star you would most
[50:16] want to go on a road trip with?
[50:19] >> Ooh. Rapid fire. Glen Close.
[50:22] >> Glen Close. Okay. change something in
[50:24] your past.
[50:26] >> You want to know what I would have
[50:27] changed?
[50:27] >> Yeah. Yeah. What you want to change?
[50:28] >> Um, I would have gotten divorced sooner.
[50:32] >> Oh.
[50:32] >> To the first person I was married to.
[50:34] >> Okay.
[50:34] >> Yeah.
[50:35] >> Biggest pet peeve.
[50:36] >> I don't like people who don't keep their
[50:38] word. Do what you say and say what you
[50:40] do. You know what I mean? That means a
[50:42] lot. It means you either out of
[50:43] integrity with yourself or or something
[50:46] because when you say you going to do
[50:47] something, do it. And that's that's
[50:48] that's the principle I live by. Period.
[50:50] What is the lesson that's taken you the
[50:53] longest to learn?
[50:55] >> The lesson that has been the longest for
[50:58] me to learn
[51:01] is that you cannot accept or you cannot
[51:04] expect people to move the way you do.
[51:08] >> And that took me a long time to like why
[51:10] don't you just see that this is the
[51:12] right thing, this is the nice thing,
[51:13] this is the kind thing, this is the
[51:15] thing.
[51:16] >> Mhm.
[51:17] And you know, that was the hardest
[51:20] lesson to know that people they don't
[51:22] they don't and won't always move like
[51:24] you think they should.
[51:26] >> Yeah. You think you got it this time?
[51:27] You think?
[51:27] >> Oh, I got it.
[51:28] >> You got it.
[51:28] >> I got it.
[51:30] >> Lord, we don't have to go through that
[51:31] one again. [laughter]
[51:33] >> Okay. One dinner guest, any living
[51:36] person, who's getting that invitation?
[51:39] >> You.
[51:40] >> Really?
[51:40] >> Yeah. I feel like, you know, when we
[51:43] chatted um in um Hawaii that time,
[51:48] >> when we went on that two-hour hike,
[51:50] >> Yeah.
[51:50] >> the knowledge, the insight, the wisdom.
[51:53] I mean, but but it's like double dipping
[51:55] because you pour a mean drink, too. You
[51:57] know what I [laughter] mean?
[52:00] So, I know that it would be full of
[52:04] laughter, but at the same time, you
[52:06] know, life lessons, joy, heartaches.
[52:08] >> We had a good time.
[52:09] >> We had a good time.
[52:09] >> We had a good time. And you you did that
[52:12] heel and you goes, "Woo!"
[52:13] >> I don't know why I did it with eyelashes
[52:15] and makeup. You said, "You going hiking
[52:17] like that?
[52:17] >> Why you going hiking like that?" Oh my
[52:19] god. Well, okay. The thing that you
[52:22] think people most misunderstand about
[52:24] you.
[52:25] >> I think that people probably think I'm
[52:30] happy all the time.
[52:33] >> You know what I mean? I'm the life of
[52:34] the party. Any industry party, JB and I
[52:37] are the first ones on the dance floor.
[52:39] I'm always happy. I always have an
[52:41] encouraging word. But I think that they
[52:44] think that that is primarily it, you
[52:48] know, and a lot of people think that
[52:50] when you're well off financially that
[52:52] you don't have problems,
[52:54] which is the furthest from the truth.
[52:56] >> Yeah. They don't know you taking care of
[52:57] your daddy and your uncle and all the
[52:59] other stuff that comes with that.
[53:00] >> And the money can't do nothing about
[53:02] your heartache and your and your pain
[53:04] and your trauma.
[53:05] >> Yeah. What is the one word you would use
[53:07] to best describe yourself? Delicious.
[53:12] Okay. [laughter]
[53:14] Okay. Social media haters. For all the
[53:17] haters, you clap back or you let it go.
[53:20] >> Most of the time I let it go. And every
[53:22] now and then I have time.
[53:26] [laughter]
[53:27] I got time today,
[53:34] you know.
[53:35] because I really am a person and and and
[53:37] my mother said this. She said, "You
[53:39] don't care what anybody thinks about
[53:41] you." I said, "I know, right?" She said
[53:43] like, "It's supposed to be a bad thing.
[53:44] I don't care. I don't even know you. Do
[53:46] you think I care what you think? And
[53:48] even if I know you, I'm going to tell
[53:49] you 10 reasons why I disagree with what
[53:51] you just said, I need to be doing with
[53:53] my black life. I [laughter] mean, worry
[53:56] about yourself." Okay? Okay.
[53:58] >> So, I really don't pay it too much
[53:59] attention to where it bothers me, but
[54:01] every now and then if I have time, I'll
[54:03] I'll give a little clap back.
[54:05] >> You'll clap back.
[54:05] >> Uh-huh. We had somebody that was very
[54:07] much like, you know, giving us the whole
[54:10] you going to hell. You're not going to
[54:11] make it because you're in this
[54:12] relationship. God is not pleased. You
[54:15] were this, that, and the third. And I
[54:17] said, "Well,
[54:18] have you have you ever prayed for me?"
[54:22] Cuz they were standing on that Bible. I
[54:24] said, "Have you ever invited me to your
[54:26] church?" Hm.
[54:28] >> But you condemning me and you ain't
[54:30] never even reached out to try to restore
[54:33] me and save this old soul. You know
[54:35] [laughter]
[54:36] what's happening? You know what I mean?
[54:38] The person was very repentant.
[54:39] >> Really?
[54:40] >> Yeah. Like all the pictures now, all the
[54:42] this is and that. But I think, let me
[54:45] say this, the challenge, the the the
[54:48] biggest challenge I think with the queer
[54:50] community is people who are not in that
[54:54] group. Look at people who are living
[54:59] their lives to the fullest in the way
[55:01] that they want to be happy, the way that
[55:03] they want to be seen, that there's so
[55:04] much joy and freedom. It is the freedom
[55:07] because when you're tapped into
[55:08] something that says a whole list of what
[55:10] you can't do
[55:11] >> and then you look over here at this
[55:12] community that's doing everything folk
[55:14] says you can't do and still having a
[55:16] good time. It's like got to be more
[55:19] careful. I'm jealous of that.
[55:21] >> Yeah. Yeah.
[55:21] >> That's what I expect.
[55:22] >> Or want to condemn it for whatever
[55:24] reason. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Book or movie
[55:27] or TV show that impacted you the most?
[55:30] >> Ava's movie Origin.
[55:31] >> Really?
[55:32] >> Yeah.
[55:32] >> In what way?
[55:33] >> You know what? It just unpacked so many
[55:35] things about race in relation to it and
[55:37] and just, you know, it was just like a
[55:40] light bulb. It's like, wait, now it all
[55:42] makes sense. Now it all makes sense. So,
[55:46] I think that movie, you know, and I
[55:48] wasn't even in it that long, but it's
[55:50] not the point of the experience in the
[55:51] movie. It's what the movie was about,
[55:53] what it represented, and I was like
[55:56] >> what it was what what it was given to
[55:58] the world to teach.
[55:59] >> Absolutely.
[56:00] >> You know what I mean? A visual to the
[56:02] book. I loved it.
[56:03] >> Absolutely. Best piece of wisdom you
[56:05] ever received.
[56:06] >> You don't have to eat a whole side of a
[56:08] cow to know that it's beef. All it takes
[56:11] is a bite.
[56:14] >> That is a great [laughter]
[56:18] You don't have to eat a whole side of a
[56:22] cow
[56:23] >> to know that it's beef. Just take a
[56:26] bite. It only takes a bite.
[56:29] >> Mhm. You just gonna keep eating it or
[56:31] what you gonna do? [laughter]
[56:36] >> Yeah.
[56:38] >> Wow. Who told you that?
[56:41] >> Oo. I don't know. You know, I used to
[56:44] always listen with my aunties. My
[56:46] grandma, my great-grandmother was a
[56:48] young great-g grandandmother. Um,
[56:50] somebody around there.
[56:51] >> Wow, that is a great one.
[56:54] >> Somebody around there.
[56:54] >> I have never heard that. [laughter]
[56:57] >> Okay.
[56:58] >> Not you, Stump.
[56:59] >> Okay. I'm stumped. Okay. Okay. Funniest
[57:02] person you've ever worked with?
[57:04] >> Funniest person I've ever worked with.
[57:06] Um, it's a tie. It's a tie between
[57:10] Bernie Mack and Cedric Yarro, who was on
[57:14] Reno 911.
[57:16] I mean, just even in the not even he's
[57:18] not even a stand-up comedian, but he's
[57:20] one of the funniest people I've worked
[57:22] with. Him and Bernie Mack.
[57:24] >> Okay. Do funny people make you funnier,
[57:26] or does it sort of then become a
[57:28] competition?
[57:30] Uh,
[57:31] it's not that they make you funnier,
[57:33] it's this that, you know, sometimes you
[57:36] feel like, let me pile on to this bit.
[57:38] Let me add my two cent in. You know, I'm
[57:40] not like that. You know what I mean? I'm
[57:42] happy for somebody to make me laugh cuz
[57:43] I'm always the one. You know what I
[57:45] mean? So, yes. So, even every year when
[57:48] it's Mother's Day and everybody want to
[57:49] put on a big hat and get stuffed into a
[57:51] restaurant. No, I want my kids to stand
[57:53] up there in front of that fireplace and
[57:55] do stuff. G, get up there and do
[57:57] something. I want a talent show. I want
[57:59] tell jokes. I don't care. Entertain me
[58:01] for once so they know [laughter]
[58:04] that is what I want once a year is to
[58:06] sit back with my arms folded and watch
[58:09] people entertain me.
[58:10] >> Don't go dragging you to no restaurant
[58:11] giving you no brunch.
[58:12] >> Please don't.
[58:13] >> Please don't
[58:13] >> get the show together.
[58:14] >> Okay. What have you gotten better at
[58:16] saying no to?
[58:17] >> Oh, that's a great question. Um, what
[58:20] I've gotten better at is not
[58:24] contemplating for too long when it
[58:26] doesn't bear witness right away. You
[58:28] know, when somebody says something to
[58:30] you and you go and then usually I will
[58:34] spend the time to try to walk it down,
[58:36] try to well maybe if this but I really
[58:38] but I and I don't do that anymore. So
[58:41] when the thing comes, if that first
[58:43] instinct is like,
[58:46] then it's just going to be no.
[58:49] >> I'm so I'm I can't do it.
[58:51] >> Wow.
[58:52] >> I can't do it. Because if if it's going
[58:53] to, you know, disrupt my peace, my flow,
[58:56] my this, my that. And sometimes it's not
[58:57] even about that. I just don't want to.
[59:00] [laughter]
[59:00] >> I don't want to. I want to stay home and
[59:02] enjoy my mortgage. I don't want to go.
[59:05] >> I want to rub my feet together.
[59:07] >> I want to stay home and enjoy my
[59:08] mortgage.
[59:09] >> Yeah. [laughter]
[59:11] I don't want to be outside all the time.
[59:13] >> Okay, last one. Finish a sentence. Love
[59:17] is
[59:19] >> everything.
[59:21] >> And so are you.
[59:22] >> A thank you. Thank you. This was so fun.
[59:27] >> I want to say All's Fair season 2
[59:29] premieres on Hulu on November 4th. And
[59:32] thank you to Nasi Nash Betts for
[59:34] lighting up this tea house with your
[59:36] bedazzling
[59:37] energy. Wow. Wow. Wow. Thanks to Seth
[59:41] and Hadia for your questions and see you
[59:43] next time. Go well everybody. Me
[59:46] [screaming]
[59:49] >> our listeners tell us [music] that the

[59:59] appreciate it if [music] you like and

[1:00:13] have to pay anything. I know subscribe
