I Ching Hexagrams 57 and 18: Wind, Decay, and Change

Two readings, the same pair of hexagrams, a week apart. In a video posted in late 2024, the I Ching teacher Adam Bauer sits down to unpack what he calls a very rare event: Hexagram 57, The Gentle, resolving into Hexagram 18, Work on What Has Been Spoiled, twice in short succession. He has been practicing for 45 years, by his own account in the video description, and says he has never seen anything like it. What follows is less a prediction than a close reading of two images, a wind that moves unseen and a bowl where something has gone rotten, and of the discipline of timing that the ancient text insists on.

Why does a repeated I Ching reading feel so significant?

The scene Bauer describes is familiar to anyone who consults the I Ching regularly. A reading is cast, lines are drawn, and the result is a primary hexagram, usually with one or more changing lines that point to a second hexagram. Most of the time the changing lines do the interesting work, turning a situation into its next stage. In a session in New Hampshire the previous week, he explains, there were no changing lines at all, so that reading ended where it started. This time the fifth line changed, and the story continued.

That is where the repetition catches his attention. "This is super rare to get the same hexagram inside of a couple weeks," he says, adding that he believes a client in a private session had recently received the same fifth line and the same second hexagram. It is the coincidence, more than any single message, that makes him stop and read the commentary carefully. Whether one reads that as synchronicity or as the ordinary odds of a small sample, the practical result is the same: two people, or one person twice, were handed a sequence that asks for patience and repair.

What is The Gentle, the wind that moves everything?

Hexagram 57 is built from a doubled trigram of wind, or wood, the soft yin-leaning figure that Bauer describes as "one of the eight fundamental elemental images." Wind enters every crevice without force. Wood, in the image he invokes, is the seed that becomes the oak: "the idea of wind and wood that which slowly gradually unobtrusively unshocking moves and gets into everything and slowly slowly grows acorn to oak." The trigram's attribute is gentleness, yet it penetrates, which is the paradox at the core of the hexagram.

The commentary Bauer reads carries this paradox into human life. In nature the wind disperses gathered clouds and leaves the sky clear. In the life of a person, it is "penetrating clarity of judgment" that thwarts hidden motives. In a community, it is the influence of a strong personality that quietly breaks up intrigues that cannot survive daylight. The key line for Bauer is about method:

"Penetration produces gradual and inconspicuous effects. It should be affected not by an act of violation but by influence that never lapses."

— the Judgment of Hexagram 57, as Adam Bauer reads it in the video (around 2:14)

The text makes a further claim that gives the hexagram its discipline. Results won by surprise attack look more striking, it says, but they are less enduring than results won by steady pressure. Influence works only "when it always works in the same direction." Gentleness is not passivity here. It is a force kept on one line until the object is reached, which is why the commentary says small strength succeeds only by subordinating itself to someone capable of creating order.

How does a changing line turn one hexagram into another?

For readers who cast with coins, the mechanics are straightforward but easy to misremember. Bauer walks through it: when the coins show all heads or all tails, that line is a changing line. A yin line becomes yang or a yang line becomes yin, and the result is a second hexagram that describes where the situation is heading. In this case, flipping the fifth line of Hexagram 57 produces Hexagram 18.

He notes why this matters for interpretation. The changing line carries its own special text, and it is read as the most active point in the reading. The line's commentary, as Bauer reads it, speaks of perseverance and of an ending before a change, with good fortune arriving only after a set number of days. He then moves to the new hexagram, because the changing line is a bridge: the situation described in 57 is not yet the situation described in 18, and the difference matters. "In the situation described in the next hexagram," he reads, "an entirely new point of departure must be set up." The earlier hexagram speaks of reform. The later one speaks of rebuilding from the foundation.

What does "work on what has been spoiled" actually ask of us?

The Chinese character for Hexagram 18, Ku, shows a bowl with worms breeding in its contents. Bauer's reading is that the decay comes from a particular combination: the gentle indifference of the lower trigram joined to the rigid inertia of the upper. Wind is below and mountain is above, and the result is stagnation. Because stagnation implies some kind of fault, the conditions call for removal of the cause, not just a description of the rot.

That is why the hexagram is titled "work on" and not simply "what has been spoiled." The commentary draws a sharp distinction between fate and human action. What has been corrupted through human fault, the text says, "can be made good again through humans work." It is "not immutable fate" but "the abuse of human freedom," and so it responds to effort. Bauer returns to this point with evident relief in the video. A time of corruption is not the same as a time of doom. The text calls the conditions a challenge, and it promises that work toward improvement "accords with the possibilities of the time."

"Work on what has been spoiled has supreme success. It furthers one to cross the great water."

— the Judgment of Hexagram 18, as read aloud in the video (around 8:49)

The image beneath the text adds a social dimension. The wind blows low on the mountain and is thrown back, spoiling the vegetation below. The superior person, the commentary says, must first stir up public opinion, as wind stirs everything, and then strengthen and tranquilize the character of the people, as the mountain nourishes what grows at its foot. Renewal begins with awakening attention and ends with stable character. It cannot run in the opposite order.

Why does the I Ching insist on timing: three days before, three days after?

The most distinctive feature of Hexagram 18 is its repeated attention to time. The text speaks of the period "before the starting point" and "after the starting point," each marked with "three days." Bauer takes this seriously rather than treating it as ornament. Before the start, the task is to know the causes of corruption, because they cannot be removed until they are understood. After the start, the task is to make sure the new way is entered safely, so that the old decay does not return.

He reads the three-day structure as a kind of rhythm of attention. Action without preparation of the ground, the commentary warns, only frightens people and drives them away. Deliberation has to come first, and then the work has to be watched for some time after it begins, to see how the improvements hold up under the test of actuality. Bauer reads the fifth line of Hexagram 18 as making the same point from a personal angle: a person who inherits corruption from neglect cannot throw it off alone, but with capable helpers he can at least bring about a thorough reform.

Near the end, Bauer circles back to the emotional texture of the week, noting that the message seems both encouraging and demanding, and that it asks for cautious, thoughtful work rather than rushing. He describes feeling two things at once, the hopeful sense that change is possible and the frustration that such change takes time. For many readers, that tension is the most useful part of the reading. The hexagrams do not deny the difficulty of the moment. They offer a method for meeting it.

Where to go from here

  • Watch the full video to hear Bauer read the commentary in sequence and see how he moves between the two hexagrams. The transcript shows how he connects the changing line to the new text.
  • Read the complete Judgment and Image texts for Hexagrams 57 and 18 in a standard translation before reflecting on your own situation. Short passages read in isolation can mislead.
  • Try the three-coin method with a single question, and note whether a changing line appears. If it does, study the line text first, then the second hexagram, and watch how the two describe a movement rather than a fixed outcome.
  • Consider the author's own practice. Bauer invites viewers to share their experience with divination in the comments and offers private sessions through his site at iamadambauer.com/i-ching/.

[0:01] hexagram 57 The

[0:03] Gentle the penetrating wind wind and

[0:06] wood is the is the kind of image of the

[0:09] fundamental three line trigram that as

[0:13] the building block of this hexagram this

[0:14] is one of eight hexagrams that's made up

[0:17] of the same three lines at the bottom

[0:18] and the top so it's a doubling of this

[0:21] one one of the eight fundamental

[0:24] Elemental uh images this idea of wind

[0:27] and wood that which slowly gradually

[0:31] unobtrusively

[0:33] unshocking moves and gets into

[0:36] everything and slowly

[0:38] slowly grows Acorn to

[0:42] Oak so sun is one of the eight double

[0:45] trigrams it is the eldest daughter and

[0:47] symbolizes wind or wood it has for its

[0:51] attribute gentleness which nonetheless

[0:54] penetrates like the wind or like growing

[0:57] wood with its roots

[1:02] the dark principle in itself rigid and

[1:06] immovable is dissolved by the

[1:08] penetrating light principle to which it

[1:11] subordinates itself in

[1:14] gentleness in nature it is the wind that

[1:17] disperses the gathered clouds leaving

[1:19] the sky clear and

[1:21] Serene in human life it is penetrating

[1:25] Clarity of judgment that thwarts all

[1:27] dark hid hidden motives

[1:31] in the life of the

[1:33] community it is the powerful influence

[1:35] of a great personality that uncovers and

[1:38] breaks up those intrigues which shun the

[1:41] light of

[1:45] day the Judgment reads the gentle

[1:49] Success Through what is

[1:51] small it furthers one to have somewhere

[1:53] to go it furthers one to see the great

[1:59] man penetration produces gradual and

[2:03] inconspicuous

[2:05] effects it should be affected not by an

[2:08] act of violation but by influence that

[2:11] never

[2:14] lapses results of this kind are less

[2:16] striking to the eye than those won by

[2:18] surprise attack but they are more

[2:20] enduring and more

[2:24] complete if one would produce such

[2:27] effects one must have a clearly defined

[2:29] goal

[2:31] for only when the penetrating influence

[2:33] Works always in the same direction can

[2:35] the object be

[2:38] attained small strength can achieve its

[2:41] purpose only by subordinating itself to

[2:44] an eminent person who is capable of

[2:47] creating

[2:53] order the image reads winds following

[2:56] one upon the other the image of the

[2:59] gently

[3:02] penetrating thus the superior man

[3:05] spreads his commands abroad and carries

[3:07] out his

[3:12] undertakings the penetrating quality of

[3:15] the wind depends upon its

[3:17] ceaseless this is what makes it so

[3:19] powerful time is its

[3:23] instrument in the same way the ruler's

[3:25] thought should penetrate the soul of the

[3:28] people this too requires a lasting

[3:31] influence brought about by Enlightenment

[3:34] and

[3:35] command only when the command has been

[3:38] assimilated by the people is action in

[3:41] accordance with it

[3:43] possible action without preparation of

[3:45] the ground only frightens and

[3:52] repels and

[3:55] uh when we got this um up in New

[3:59] Hampshire last week that was the end of

[4:02] our reading because we had no changing

[4:04] lines but

[4:06] here um The Fifth Line is changing which

[4:11] means we're going to read the special

[4:12] commentary on the

[4:14] fifth line of this six line

[4:18] hexagram changing line in the fifth

[4:20] place means perseverance brings Good

[4:24] Fortune remorse

[4:27] vanishes nothing that does not further

[4:31] no beginning but an

[4:33] end before the change 3

[4:36] days after the change three

[4:39] days good

[4:47] fortune you know what I think this is

[4:49] the

[4:50] literal wow I think this may be the

[4:54] exact same hexagram because I I did a

[4:56] private session for someone um in the

[4:59] last couple weeks

[5:01] and uh and and I think they got this

[5:04] exact line and I think they got the work

[5:06] on what it's been spoiled also this is

[5:08] super rare to get the same hexagram

[5:10] inside of a couple weeks is uh almost

[5:13] unheard

[5:14] of

[5:16] um perseverance brings Good Fortune

[5:18] remorse vanishes nothing that does not

[5:21] further no beginning but an end before

[5:24] the change 3 days after the change 3

[5:27] days good fortune

[5:31] in the situation described in coup work

[5:34] on what has been spoiled yeah because we

[5:35] got this because it's because this

[5:37] changing line if it's the only one in

[5:39] the hexagram that changes gets you to

[5:41] hexagram 18 which is what we're going to

[5:43] read next and it references hexagram 18

[5:45] here which is also relatively unusual so

[5:48] it's saying in the situation described

[5:50] in the next hexagram work on what has

[5:52] been spoiled an entirely new Point of

[5:54] Departure must be set up whereas here it

[5:57] is only a question of reforms

[6:00] the beginning has not been good but the

[6:03] moment has been reached when a new

[6:05] Direction can be can be

[6:07] taken change and Improvement are called

[6:11] for such steps must be undertaken with

[6:14] steadfastness that is with a firm and

[6:16] correct attitude of mind then they will

[6:19] succeed and remorse will

[6:23] disappear but it must be remembered that

[6:25] such improvements require careful

[6:28] consideration before a change is made it

[6:31] must be pondered over again and

[6:34] again after the change is made it is

[6:36] necessary to note carefully for some

[6:38] time after how the improvements bear the

[6:41] test of

[6:42] actuality such careful work is

[6:45] accompanied by Good Fortune

[7:06] I'm just going to go right to the next

[7:07] textagram and then we

[7:10] can peel this apart a little more if we

[7:13] want unless anyone has any immediate

[7:16] thoughts or Reflections

[7:22] here so when you change the Fifth Line

[7:26] into its

[7:27] opposite uh which happens when you get

[7:29] all heads or whole Tails all three heads

[7:32] three heads or three Tails all Yin or

[7:34] all y uh it's a changing line which

[7:36] means you have a special read on it and

[7:38] you flip it into its opposite to get uh

[7:41] to develop a second hexagram out of the

[7:43] first situation that gets us to this

[7:45] hexagram 18 work on what has been

[7:50] spoiled the Chinese character coup

[7:52] represents a bowl in whose contents

[7:55] worms are

[7:57] breeding this means decay

[8:00] it has come about because the gentle

[8:02] indifference of the lower

[8:05] trigram has come together with the rigid

[8:07] inertia of the upper and the result is

[8:11] stagnation since this implies guilt the

[8:15] conditions embody a demand for removal

[8:17] of the

[8:19] cause hence the meaning of the hexagram

[8:22] is not simply what has been spoiled but

[8:25] work on what has been spoiled

[8:30] the Judgment work on what has been

[8:32] spoiled has Supreme

[8:35] success it furthers one to cross the

[8:37] great water before the starting point 3

[8:41] days after the starting point 3

[8:49] days what has been spoiled through

[8:51] human's fault can be made good again

[8:54] through humans

[8:55] work it is not immutable fate as in the

[8:59] time of Stan still that has caused the

[9:01] state of corruption but rather the abuse

[9:04] of human

[9:06] Freedom work toward improving conditions

[9:09] promises well because it Accords with

[9:12] the possibilities of the

[9:14] time we must not recoil from work and

[9:17] danger symbolized by crossing of the

[9:19] great water but must take hold

[9:23] energetically success depends however on

[9:26] proper

[9:27] deliberation this is expressed by the

[9:29] line before the starting point 3 days

[9:32] after the starting point 3

[9:35] days we must first know the causes of

[9:38] corruption before we can do away with

[9:40] them hence it is necessary to be

[9:43] cautious during the time before the

[9:46] start then we must see to it that the

[9:48] new way is safely entered upon so that a

[9:51] relapse may be

[9:53] avoided therefore we must pay attention

[9:55] to the time after the

[9:57] start decisiveness and energy must take

[10:00] the place of the inertia and

[10:02] indifference that have led to decay in

[10:04] order that the ending may be followed by

[10:06] a new

[10:12] beginning the image the wind blows low

[10:15] on the mountain the image of

[10:18] Decay thus the superior man stirs up the

[10:22] people and strengthens their

[10:27] Spirit when the wind blows low on the

[10:29] mountain is thrown back and spoils the

[10:33] vegetation this contains a challenge to

[10:37] Improvement it is the same with debasing

[10:40] attitudes and Fashions they corrupt

[10:42] Human

[10:44] Society to do away with this corruption

[10:47] the superior person must regenerate

[10:50] Society their methods likewise must be

[10:53] derived from the two trigrams but in

[10:55] such a way that their effects unfold in

[10:58] orderly sequence

[11:01] Superior person must first remove

[11:03] stagnation by stirring up public opinion

[11:06] as the wind stirs

[11:08] everything and must then strengthen and

[11:10] tranquilize the character of the people

[11:13] as the mountain gives tranquility and

[11:15] nourishment to all that grows in its

[11:20] vicinity pretty interesting read

[11:23] really um the last part of this reading

[11:25] is the Fifth Line uh that's what got us

[11:28] here setting right what has been spoiled

[11:30] by the father one meets with

[11:36] praise an individual is confronted with

[11:38] corruption originating from neglect in

[11:41] former

[11:43] times he lacks the power to W it off

[11:46] alone but with able helpers he can at

[11:48] least bring about a thorough reform if

[11:52] he cannot create a new beginning and

[11:54] this also is praiseworthy

[12:07] any thoughts

[12:10] Reflections Curiosities

[12:13] questions strike me about this reading

[12:22] um I guess I'm interpreting this at

[12:26] least substantially against the

[12:27] background of current events in the US

[12:29] say over the last you know weeks week

[12:33] weeks months years depending how you

[12:35] want to slice it and um so I'm struck

[12:41] that in the face of what seems at some

[12:45] level so sort of elementally

[12:47] catastrophic or you know potentially

[12:49] disruptive at

[12:51] scale what this is talking about the

[12:54] iching is no stranger to talk of

[12:57] revolutions and talk of you know sever

[12:59] your

[13:01] um moments I find it striking that this

[13:06] first textagram is all about the

[13:09] softness and uh

[13:12] gentleness with which Real Change takes

[13:16] place um you know the whole language

[13:19] about you know that that that real

[13:23] change happens kind of slowly and

[13:25] organically in a way and like the sudden

[13:27] surprise attack um you know in a sense

[13:30] kind of what we're living through right

[13:31] now at a certain level um could be seen

[13:33] at least um you know it that gets more

[13:37] headlines it gets it generates more

[13:39] outrage but it doesn't necessarily

[13:42] actually change or affect things in the

[13:46] way that sort of slow gradual gentle

[13:50] progress and also you know I'm all for

[13:53] getting riled up and revolutionary at a

[13:55] certain level but there's something to

[13:57] be said and this hexagram seems to be

[13:59] saying it that there's something really

[14:01] to be said for just being grounded in

[14:05] our practice and doing the work slowly

[14:07] slowly every day not necessarily having

[14:10] to Galvanize you know a a cataclysmic

[14:13] struggle of good against evil you know

[14:14] that may not be the way

[14:16] to um to understand or navigate the time

[14:21] that we uh appear to be living in and

[14:26] will be continuing to live in um

[14:30] um so that was

[14:33] um that was one thing that struck me in

[14:35] this tagram as it did the previous two

[14:37] times I've gotten this in the last two

[14:38] weeks

[14:40] um other this idea of the the winds

[14:43] following one upon the other the image

[14:45] of the gently penetrating thus the

[14:47] superior man spreads his commands abroad

[14:49] and carries out his undertakings it's

[14:51] not a passive you know situation it's a

[14:54] it's a getting to work thing you know

[14:56] spreading one's commands abroad you know

[14:59] uh carrying out our undertakings this

[15:01] whole idea of time being the instrument

[15:06] of change you know time is our Ally in a

[15:09] way it may take a long time but time

[15:11] actually is

[15:14] how slow gentle progress can make such

[15:19] an impact over a period of time um so it

[15:23] seems to be both encouraging that

[15:25] softness and gentleness and

[15:29] encouraging us to see how that can

[15:32] really create a

[15:35] meaningful and in a way more

[15:39] fundamentally lasting kind of influence

[15:43] versus the you know big revolutionary

[15:46] explosions

[15:48] um that some kind of you know social

[15:52] movements seem to specialize in

[15:54] including in a way kind of a little bit

[15:56] where we are um

[16:00] and then the whole idea of so we get

[16:03] here in the Fifth Line and in the next

[16:05] exogram this idea of waiting you know at

[16:07] the beginning wait three days before you

[16:10] know after the end wait three days this

[16:12] this idea of being really deliberate and

[16:14] cautious and thoughtful and not rushing

[16:17] into things like having doing the work

[16:20] to be clear on what is the direction

[16:23] where are we going how are we going to

[16:25] make this work let's pay really close

[16:27] attention to it after we try to to put

[16:29] whatever you know kind of reforms or

[16:31] movements in place because it's not just

[16:34] like quick decisions and then blasting

[16:36] through and you know good luck everybody

[16:37] it's like really paying attention to

[16:42] um to to the work uh in a in a very

[16:47] conscious way and this whole idea of

[16:49] perseverance brings Good Fortune remorse

[16:52] vanishes nothing that would not further

[16:54] I mean those are pretty darn um

[16:58] encouraging uh

[17:00] pronouncements no beginning but an

[17:03] end so anyway so I thought those were

[17:07] some of the things that stuck out on

[17:09] that first hexagram and then moving to

[17:11] work on what has been spoiled again you

[17:13] know a bow in whose contents worms are

[17:16] breeding like G this is like nasty you

[17:19] know but here we are it's nasty it's

[17:22] nasty time that again this is the third

[17:24] time I've gotten this xram in the last

[17:26] 10 or 15 days um 10 or 12 days maybe so

[17:31] it's been a theme that I've already been

[17:33] kind of chewing on um work on what has

[17:35] been spoiled as fast any it because as

[17:37] it says itself um it's not just

[17:42] describing a spoiled situation it's

[17:45] describing the process of working it so

[17:48] that we can clean it up and purify you

[17:51] know like we don't want to eat out of a

[17:53] bowl that's got rotten stuff and worms

[17:55] we got to throw that in the compost we

[17:57] got to like scrub the bowl out you know

[17:59] we we have to like prepare things and

[18:00] clean things up before we can really

[18:03] utilize that again in a healthy

[18:05] reasonable way and that's what this

[18:07] hexagram is saying it's saying like Yep

[18:09] this is rotten

[18:11] and time to you know do the work time to

[18:14] do the work of cleaning of cleaning it

[18:17] up

[18:21] um and you

[18:24] know I paid I don't know if I paid too

[18:27] much attention to politics and current

[18:29] affairs

[18:29] but I pay a fair amount

[18:32] and I hope I can be forgiven for

[18:35] thinking of the

[18:37] dominant kind of social cultural SL

[18:41] two-party system in America as being in

[18:44] a way somewhat interestingly reflected

[18:46] in these

[18:48] lines so it's this idea of Decay the

[18:52] Decay is come about because the gentle

[18:54] indifference of the lower drram the wind

[18:58] the gentle has come together with the

[19:00] rigid inertia of the upper the mountain

[19:03] keeping still that's what the top three

[19:05] lines changed to when the Fifth Line

[19:07] changed so the gentle indifference of

[19:09] the lower trigram has come together with

[19:11] the rigid inertia of the upper and the

[19:13] result is

[19:16] stagnation

[19:19] yeah but again work on Wiman for has

[19:22] Supreme success it furthers one to cross

[19:25] the Great Water the the great water

[19:26] crossing the great water is like you

[19:28] know an ambitious undertaking you don't

[19:29] want to do that unless you got all hands

[19:31] on deck and a plan and the right gear

[19:33] and the weather's good and you know the

[19:35] whole thing seems likely not to drown

[19:38] everybody you know by doing it halfway

[19:41] and this is encouraging that it's time

[19:44] to work on that Supreme success it

[19:46] furthers one to cross the great water

[19:48] but again before the starting point 3

[19:50] days after the starting point 3 days

[19:52] like really being circumspect but I love

[19:54] this idea but what's been spoiled by

[19:56] humans fault can be made good again

[19:58] through humans work it's like yep truth

[20:00] you know it's not immutable fate that's

[20:03] caused the state of corruption but

[20:05] rather the abuse of human Freedom work

[20:07] towards improving conditions promise as

[20:09] well because it Accords with the

[20:12] possibilities of the time this is

[20:13] another thing the Ching is

[20:17] um one of its

[20:20] consistent thematic messages that it's

[20:22] constantly underscoring is this idea

[20:25] that we are players within a broader

[20:28] context that is happening that shapes

[20:31] and informs and sometimes

[20:34] bounds um the limits of what is possible

[20:37] for us to achieve where we can go um

[20:41] because circumstances are such that they

[20:44] sometimes favor certain you know energy

[20:47] and sometimes favor other kinds of

[20:49] energy and we can

[20:51] only buck that to a certain degree

[20:54] before we run into like oh this isn't

[20:56] really the time where whatever it is

[20:57] that I'm trying to do here is is really

[20:59] favorably held then it makes it hard to

[21:02] really like Advance on that thing and so

[21:06] this idea of understanding what are the

[21:08] time conditions and how to live in

[21:10] harmony with that through you know

[21:13] basically like taking action when it's

[21:15] time to take action and you know resting

[21:17] and going more internally for example

[21:20] when it's time to rest and go more

[21:22] internally it's not about

[21:25] always doing any particular activity

[21:28] it's about being in harmony with the

[21:30] kind of seasons and the time frame and

[21:33] what is being asked of us and invited

[21:36] from us and what this is talking about

[21:39] is that it is a

[21:41] time it Accords with the time the

[21:44] possibilities of the time this idea of

[21:46] like making uh you know improving

[21:49] conditions and doing the great work and

[21:51] crossing the Great Water this is

[21:52] actually this is in harmony with this

[21:54] period of time like this is not a time

[21:57] where it's saying boy just Retreat to

[21:58] your corner and lick your wounds and you

[22:00] know and don't take any action because

[22:02] anything could bring it's not saying

[22:04] that it's saying this is a good time to

[22:07] do the

[22:10] work success depends however on proper

[22:13] deliberation this whole before the

[22:15] starting point 3 days after the starting

[22:16] point 3 days um which again came in the

[22:19] other hexagram also we must first know

[22:22] the causes of corruption before we can

[22:24] do away with

[22:25] them hence it's necessary to be cautious

[22:28] in the time before before the

[22:29] start then we must see to it that the

[22:32] new way is safely entered upon so the

[22:34] relapse may be avoided therefore we pay

[22:36] must pay attention to the time after the

[22:38] start decisiveness and energy must take

[22:41] the place of the inertia and

[22:43] indifference that have led to decay in

[22:45] order that the ending may be followed by

[22:47] a new

[22:49] beginning thus the superior man stir up

[22:52] the people and strengthens their spirit

[23:05] yeah this part struck me also when the

[23:07] wind blows low on the mountain it's

[23:08] thrown back and spoils the vegetation

[23:11] that just really seems like a little bit

[23:13] of a description of the current cultural

[23:16] spoilage because it's

[23:18] like this incredibly Savage Cutting Edge

[23:24] of Just The gnarliest Duality and

[23:28] challeng

[23:30] and anger making frustrating blood

[23:33] curdling you've got to be

[23:35] kidding me at one level this is my

[23:38] experience and then on the other

[23:40] level you know how can I how can I

[23:43] maintain there's more that Nar got like

[23:46] styly how can I how can I

[23:50] maintain a ground in the

[23:54] nondual acceptance of all phenomena as

[23:58] somehow now being perfect and necessary

[24:02] and just fine kind of as it is without

[24:05] that turning into sort of a spiritual

[24:07] bypass of like oh no everything's going

[24:09] to be fine oh we must we must need this

[24:11] we you know without somehow like

[24:13] breaking the brain through

[24:15] like not actually being able to feel the

[24:18] fullness of the Heartbreak of The

[24:20] Duality like how to feel both of those

[24:23] fully without without succumbing to the

[24:28] Dual

[24:29] too

[24:30] brutally but without numbing from it or

[24:33] talking myself into somehow being above

[24:36] it when actually my heart is being

[24:37] broken by it like this is at the center

[24:41] of the existential challenge that I'm

[24:44] feeling you know this week and in this

[24:46] time is it's been hard to hold the

[24:50] non-dual part because I just it's so

[24:52] obvious that so many people are going to

[24:54] get hurt um and the and the driving

[24:58] energy is just so sort of antithetical

[25:01] to so much of what I believe in and my

[25:03] hopes and dreams for you know this

[25:05] beautiful idea that is a nation full of

[25:09] equal immigrants who can come and like

[25:11] make it work as long as they're willing

[25:13] to like put their shoulder to the

[25:14] grindstone and whatnot and and so it's a

[25:17] super challenging

[25:19] time

[25:22] um for me

[25:26] and and yet

[25:29] I'm not really like a political activist

[25:31] by Nature exactly my activism you know

[25:33] kind of takes a different form I suppose

[25:36] and so like I'm not that inclined to

[25:38] like whatever you know somehow try to

[25:41] work it out in the political trenches

[25:43] directly myself you know I recognize the

[25:45] value of voting in politics in a big way

[25:47] I pay attention to it but like it's not

[25:49] my way to try to move the needle that

[25:52] way so I think I'm I'm with you on the

[25:55] question because it's

[25:59] really hard to hold both of them you

[26:01] know fully and cleanly without being

[26:03] somehow overwhelmed

Frequently Asked Questions

Hexagram 57 is built from a doubled wind or wood trigram, and it describes influence that penetrates through gentleness rather than force. Adam Bauer compares it to the wind that clears clouds from the sky and to a seed that slowly grows into an oak. Its commentary says lasting results come from steady influence that keeps working in one direction.
Hexagram 18, Ku, is pictured as a bowl with worms breeding in its contents, representing decay caused by human neglect. Its text holds that what has been spoiled through human fault can be made good again through human work. It asks for removing the cause of corruption rather than just naming the problem.
A changing line appears when the coins fall all heads or all tails for a particular line, which turns that line into its opposite. The result is a second hexagram that shows where the situation is moving. In Bauer's reading, changing the fifth line of Hexagram 57 produces Hexagram 18.
Adam Bauer says that after 45 years of practice he had never seen this happen, and he calls it almost unheard of to receive the same hexagram within a couple of weeks. Repeated readings are uncommon because a given hexagram with a specific changing line is only one of many possible outcomes. Bauer frames the repetition as meaningful, though he also invites viewers to share their own experiences.
The text of Hexagram 18 uses the phrase three days before the starting point and three days after it to stress timing. Before starting, one must understand the causes of corruption, and after starting, one must watch carefully whether the improvements hold up in practice. Bauer reads the structure as a rhythm of deliberate preparation followed by sustained attention.
Toss three coins for each line of the hexagram, and treat three matching faces, either three heads or three tails, as a changing line. Study that line's special commentary first, then read the second hexagram it produces. Together they show the situation as it is and the direction it is moving.
