Drifting Off Slowly: How a Sleep Meditation Builds Calm

From Michael Galyon

Watch · 8

Lights low, a voice arrives in the dark: "hi it's Michael." That is how "Drifting Off Slowly," a 32-minute bonus episode from Michael Galyon, opens, with a reminder to try the practice only somewhere safe, where sleep is welcome. From there the recording does one thing with real patience. It gives the listener a small job at each stage. Breathe, and let the breath serve as an anchor. Tense one group of muscles on the inhale, release on the exhale, and travel up the body from the feet to the face. Once the body feels heavy, follow a forest path toward the sound of a brook, counting steps as you go, until the mind has little left to do but drift. Published on December 30, 2024, the video has drawn more than 31,000 views, and what keeps people with it is less the imagery than the architecture underneath.

What does the recording ask you to do before anything else?

The episode is candid about its purpose. Near the start Galyon says, "this is a meditation to be done only when you are in the safety of your home or somewhere that you can settle into sleep" (0:26). That line sets the frame. This is not a practice to attempt while driving, cooking, or half-listening in a crowded room. It is a wind-down, and the instructions assume you have already decided to rest.

The first physical instruction is simple: take a deep breath in, breathe out, and find the most comfortable position you can, whether that means lying in bed or curling up with a blanket or pillow. The breath pattern itself is specific. Breathe in through the nose, pause briefly at the top, then release with a sigh. The recording asks you to notice the cool air on the inhale and the warmth on the exhale, and to imagine "a wave of calm washing over you" with each breath out, carrying stress away.

Notice how much attention the opening gives to ordinary sensation. Before any imagery arrives, you are feeling the chest and belly rise and fall. That grounding matters. A sleep practice that starts with an elaborate scene asks the mind to build something new. One that starts with the body already in the room asks it only to stay.

Why does the breath serve as an anchor, and what happens when the mind wanders?

Most guided sleep meditations acknowledge that thoughts will show up. This one plans for them. Galyon's instruction, when thinking begins, is to "continue to redirect all of the attention and awareness to the breath" (roughly 6:16). The practice does not ask you to empty the mind or to stop a thought. It asks you to notice that you have wandered and return to the breath, which is the same move again and again.

The recording makes this explicit as it moves toward sleep. Galyon says: "as you move into Slumber any time that the mind takes you away just remember this breath is your anchor this place to return to to find that calm that Stillness that peace" (about 7:09). The word "anchor" is worth sitting with. An anchor does not hold a boat still by fighting the tide. It keeps the boat from drifting far, and it lets the boat ride the water. In this framing, a wandering thought is not a failure. It is simply the cue to come back.

This is why the breath remains in the background of every later stage. Even when the body scan and the forest arrive, the breath is the thread tying the whole episode together.

How does tensing a muscle help it let go?

The middle third of the episode is a body scan built on a tense-and-release pattern, commonly known as progressive muscle relaxation. The method is straightforward but its logic is worth understanding. You tense a muscle group on the inhale, hold, then let it go on the exhale. Galyon's wording at the feet is typical: "as you continue those deep breaths with the inhale allow for yourself to gently tense the muscles and the feet curling the toes" (about 8:19).

The sequence moves in order: feet, calves, thighs, hips and seat, lower back and abdomen, chest and upper back, shoulders, neck, arms and fists, and finally the face. Each stage follows the same rhythm. Tension is made deliberately, held briefly, and released. The point is contrast. Most people carry tension they never notice, in the jaw, the shoulders, the belly. Deliberately creating tension makes the difference between tight and soft easier to feel, so the release becomes something you can actually sense rather than assume.

The order also does something useful. Starting at the feet and climbing gives the body a way to settle from the ground up. By the time the face is reached, the recording has already asked you to release the lower body, the torso, and the arms. Galyon's summary captures the cumulative effect: "notice how each part of the body is now connected how the relaxation flows from one part to the next every bit of you letting go" (about 15:00). The scan is less a checklist than a slow wave that spreads.

What does the forest walk do once the body is heavy?

Once the body has been released, the recording invites you to "draw your mind to an image of you standing at the edge of a Serene forest with this relaxed body" (about 15:29). The scene is carefully furnished: a setting sun, a sky of pink and orange, air that is "fresh and cool" and carries "a subtle scent of Pine and Earth." You step onto soft, mossy ground and follow a winding path.

This is where the recording shifts from sensation to motion. You are no longer only noticing your body. You are walking, and the walk has a count. At about 19:07 Galyon guides you through the first step, feeling "the coolness" beneath your feet, and the count continues toward step ten, where you "reach the other side." Counting is a quiet design choice. It gives the mind a sequential, low-stakes task, one that is easy to follow and impossible to get wrong. It is also gentle enough not to provoke the kind of analysis that keeps people awake.

The imagery also works through the senses in a deliberate order. Colors, the rustle of leaves, birdsong settling for the night, and finally the sound of "a bubbling brook" that you are invited to follow. Sound is the guide here: the brook pulls attention forward without requiring you to decide where to go. By the time you reach the clearing and sit by the water, the forest has taken over the work the breath began.

How does the recording hand you off to sleep?

The ending does not tell you to stay alert or to check whether you are asleep yet. Instead the scene slows. The transcript pictures the shadows lengthening and the forest growing still, and the voice continues to offer the same invitations that opened the episode: settle, breathe, let go. The practice is designed to fade rather than stop abruptly. Its final lines, around 31:41, point straight at the purpose announced at the start, a restful night.

There is a practical lesson in that structure. A sleep meditation is not a performance you finish. It is a way of lowering the body's demands and giving the mind a single, repeating task until the task dissolves into rest. Galyon's episode gets there through four simple tools: a breath to return to, a body to release piece by piece, a path to walk, and a voice that keeps offering the same few words. None of these is novel on its own. Together they make a sequence that is easy to follow even when you are tired.

Note that the excerpt available for this reading is partial, drawn from the opening stretch of the recording and a set of timestamped segments. The structure described here holds across those sections, and the full 32 minutes will carry the same method through to its close.

Where to go from here

If you want to try this approach, start with the conditions Galyon names: a safe place and a moment when you are ready to sleep. Use the breath pattern as your anchor for the first few minutes, and return to it whenever thoughts pull you away. If the full body scan feels long, shorten it. Pick three areas, such as the feet, the shoulders, and the face, and release each one with the same inhale-hold-exhale rhythm.

Give the forest walk its own room. If the scene does not come easily, let the sound of the brook or the count of steps do the work instead. Notice which element holds your attention, and return to it. Over several nights you may find the sequence shortening on its own, with the body going heavy faster and the walk arriving sooner. That is the practice doing what it was designed to do: giving you somewhere to rest your attention while the day quietly lets go.

[0:07] hi it's Michael and just a reminder that

[0:10] these meditations are intended to be

[0:12] done in this Stillness and

[0:14] [Music]

[0:21] quiet I'm glad you're here and a part of

[0:24] this community I hope that today's

[0:26] episode helps you to settle into a good

[0:28] night's sleep

[0:31] today's episode is entirely devoted to

[0:33] helping you drift off into a peaceful

[0:35] night's Slumber so just a reminder that

[0:38] this is a meditation to be done only

[0:40] when you are in the safety of your home

[0:42] or somewhere that you can settle into

[0:44] sleep so make sure if you are anywhere

[0:46] that you need to be mindful and aware to

[0:48] pause and wait to do this until you are

[0:50] ready for

[0:52] sleep but to begin let's take a deep

[0:55] breath

[0:57] in and breathe out

[1:00] and let it all

[1:07] settle and take the next few moments to

[1:10] just find the most comfortable position

[1:12] that you

[1:13] can maybe that's lying down in your bed

[1:16] or finding a place that you can curl up

[1:18] into

[1:20] Comfort maybe grabbing the blankets or a

[1:23] comfy

[1:25] pillow and preparing yourself to

[1:28] settle to find Stillness

[1:31] and to give yourself permission to let

[1:34] go and to drift off into

[1:43] sleep we'll begin today by drawing the

[1:45] awareness to the

[1:47] breath taking a deep breath

[1:50] in and breathing

[1:54] out drawing all of the attention and

[1:57] awareness to a gentle breath in through

[1:59] the nose

[2:03] and breathing

[2:07] out allowing for the lungs to fill

[2:09] completely as you breathe

[2:14] in and breathe

[2:20] out breathing in through the

[2:23] nose and then for a brief moment holding

[2:26] at the top

[2:32] and with a sigh letting everything

[2:38] go as you continue to Breathe In and Out

[2:42] begin to see how the breath can allow

[2:43] for you to release

[2:46] tension breathing

[2:49] deeply finding a rhythm that feels

[2:51] natural and

[2:54] soothing and continuing to let

[2:58] go breathing in

[3:02] in and breathing

[3:13] out begin to note the cool air as you

[3:17] inhale and the warmth of the air as you

[3:20] exhale

[3:32] with each breath imagining a wave of

[3:35] calm washing over

[3:39] you and with each breath out just

[3:42] letting that wave move away from you

[3:45] carrying with it any stress or

[3:50] worries each inhale brings

[3:53] peace each exhale relieves

[3:58] tension breathing

[4:01] in and letting

[4:16] go begin to notice how the body feels

[4:19] with each

[4:21] breath as you inhale feel the chest and

[4:23] the belly

[4:26] rise and as you exhale feel them softly

[4:29] fall sinking into what's beneath

[4:35] you let each breath become a gentle

[4:37] reminder of the calm and peace that you

[4:39] are inviting into your

[4:47] body breathing in

[4:49] [Music]

[4:51] calm breathing out tension

[5:20] with each breath begin to feel the body

[5:22] becoming

[5:23] heavier feel yourself sinking deeper and

[5:27] deeper into the

[5:28] bed and imagine that each breath that

[5:31] you take ushers in a sense of

[5:36] tranquility and as you exhale just allow

[5:39] for the remnants of the day

[5:42] to wash

[5:45] away each breath is this opportunity to

[5:48] let go to relax more deeply to sink into

[5:52] what's beneath

[5:54] you breathing

[5:57] in and letting go

[6:14] and if those thoughts begin to enter

[6:16] into the Mind continue to redirect all

[6:20] of the attention and awareness to the

[6:22] breath feeling what it feels like to

[6:24] breathe

[6:26] in and let go

[6:31] finding that place of Stillness no need

[6:34] to

[6:37] rush take your

[6:40] time allow for each breath to bring in

[6:43] that deeper and deeper sense of

[6:50] relaxation letting the Mind Focus solely

[6:53] on the

[6:54] breath that calm wave washing over you

[7:06] and as you move into Slumber any time

[7:09] that the mind takes you

[7:11] away just remember this breath is your

[7:14] anchor this place to return to to find

[7:17] that calm that Stillness that peace

[7:44] and as you continue to settle deeper and

[7:47] deeper into the moment connected to the

[7:51] breath allow for yourself to become

[7:53] aware of the

[7:57] body noting any space of tension or

[8:02] tightness anywhere that might feel like

[8:04] it's still holding

[8:09] on and then draw all of that awareness

[8:12] and attention into your

[8:16] feet and as you continue those deep

[8:19] breaths with the inhale allow for

[8:22] yourself to gently tense the muscles and

[8:24] the feet curling the

[8:26] toes and

[8:27] [Music]

[8:28] hold and then exhale and release that

[8:31] tension from the feet letting your feet

[8:33] become heavy and relaxed sinking down

[8:35] deeper and

[8:45] deeper and then move that awareness and

[8:48] attention into the

[8:50] calves with a deep inhale allow for

[8:52] those muscles and the calves to tense

[8:54] holding on to that tension as you

[8:56] breathe in and hold

[9:01] and breathing out let your calves fully

[9:05] relax start to notice how the muscles

[9:08] soften and that relaxation

[9:19] spreads and now bring that focus and

[9:21] attention into the

[9:23] thighs feeling that deep inhale in and

[9:26] gently tensing all of the muscles within

[9:28] your thighs and your legs

[9:33] holding and then breathing out letting

[9:35] everything

[9:36] go settling into the moment feeling the

[9:39] warmth of relaxation spreading through

[9:41] your thighs soothing and

[9:57] calming and then moving your attention

[10:00] up into your hips into your seat feeling

[10:03] that deep breath in feeling the abdomen

[10:06] tensing all of the muscles in your hips

[10:09] and your seat

[10:12] holding and then breathing out letting

[10:15] go of all of the tension that might be

[10:16] stored

[10:18] there feel the heaviness of your hips

[10:21] the sense of grounding

[10:26] stability feel the entire lower body

[10:28] just sink

[10:36] and then move that awareness up into the

[10:38] lower back in the

[10:39] abdomen feeling that deep inhale into

[10:42] the belly as you tense the muscles

[10:47] holding and then Letting Go breathing

[10:50] out allowing your lower back and abdomen

[10:52] to fully relax feel the release the

[10:54] sense of space the ease all settling

[10:57] down into what's beneath you

[11:12] and then drawing that awareness up into

[11:14] the chest through the upper back into

[11:16] the

[11:18] shoulders the space between the

[11:23] shoulders with a gentle breath in

[11:26] feeling a tensing of all of the muscles

[11:29] hold it

[11:33] and letting go as you feel a wave of

[11:35] relaxation wash over

[11:37] you notice how the chest feels

[11:40] open the shoulders

[11:46] relax and as the chest feels that

[11:49] openness allow for the breath to flow

[11:52] even more

[11:55] freely breathing

[11:58] in and let letting

[12:14] go and then move that awareness into the

[12:17] upper shoulders through the

[12:21] neck taking a deep breath in tensing all

[12:25] of the muscles within the shoulders the

[12:27] neck

[12:29] and let go breathing out releasing any

[12:33] tension or

[12:36] tightness feel a loosening of the neck

[12:40] letting

[12:49] go and then move that awareness into the

[12:54] arms breathing in gently tensing all of

[12:57] the muscles clenching the Fists feeling

[12:59] the entire arm tense and tight which you

[13:05] hold and release letting go with the

[13:07] breath exiting through the

[13:12] mouth allow for the arms the hands to

[13:15] fully

[13:17] relax feel the heaviness of the arms the

[13:20] softness of the hands letting go

[13:35] and then finally focus on the

[13:39] face as you take a deep inhale through

[13:41] the nose gently begin to tense the

[13:44] muscles and the

[13:48] face feel that holding at the

[13:52] top and as you let go let all of the

[13:55] muscles in the face just drop

[14:00] feel the face becoming smooth and

[14:03] relaxed notice the softness in your

[14:05] cheeks the relaxation in your jaws let

[14:24] go now take a moment to scan the entire

[14:27] body

[14:29] breathe deeply releasing any remains of

[14:34] tension as you breathe

[14:36] out allowing for your entire body to

[14:39] sink deeper and deeper and

[14:43] deeper into a sense of

[14:48] relaxation notice how each part of the

[14:50] body is now

[14:52] connected how the relaxation flows from

[14:55] one part to the next

[15:00] every bit of you letting

[15:08] go and as that tension melts

[15:12] away you feel this sense of calm and

[15:15] ease wash over

[15:17] you let the body

[15:22] settle and draw your mind to an

[15:26] image of you standing at the edge of a

[15:29] Serene

[15:33] forest with this relaxed body the still

[15:38] breath begin to imagine yourself bathed

[15:41] in the soft glow of the setting

[15:46] sun the sky is painted with gentle Hues

[15:49] of pink and

[15:52] orange creating the most tranquil

[15:57] atmosphere the air is is fresh and

[16:02] cool carrying a subtle scent of Pine and

[16:12] Earth and begin to imagine yourself

[16:14] stepping

[16:18] forward and as you take that first step

[16:20] you feel the soft Mossy ground beneath

[16:24] your feet

[16:29] you begin to walk along a winding

[16:33] path each step you take is bringing you

[16:36] deeper and deeper into the

[16:41] forest notice the vibrant colors of the

[16:45] trees the gentle rushing of leaves in

[16:48] the

[16:50] breeze and the melodic song of birds

[17:02] in the distance you hear the soothing

[17:05] sound of a bubbling

[17:09] brook the sound ushers into your ears

[17:13] feeling a sense of

[17:14] calm inviting you to follow

[17:25] it and as you walk toward the sound

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a 32-minute bonus guided sleep meditation published on December 30, 2024. It combines slow breathing, a tense-and-release body scan from the feet to the face, and a visualized forest walk designed to help the listener fall asleep.
Tense one muscle group while breathing in, hold briefly, then release on the exhale, and move steadily through the body. In Galyon's episode the order runs from feet and calves up through the thighs, hips, abdomen, chest, shoulders, neck, arms, and face. The contrast between tension and release helps the body notice softness it might otherwise miss.
Galyon's approach is to redirect attention back to the breath each time you notice you have drifted. He describes the breath as an anchor, a place to return to rather than a task you have to perfect. Wandering is treated as the cue to come back, not as a failure of the practice.
Counting gives the mind a simple, sequential task that is easy to follow and hard to get wrong. The episode counts steps along a winding path toward a brook, pairing that count with sensory details like cool air, mossy ground, and birdsong to draw attention outward from thought.
The episode itself advises doing it only when you are in a safe place and ready for sleep, such as your home. It is meant as a wind-down practice, so it is best used at bedtime or when you are already preparing to rest rather than while driving or doing active tasks.
The source material does not give a timeframe for results, so no specific number of nights can be promised. The practical approach is to use the sequence consistently and shorten it if the full version feels long, releasing three or four body areas instead of all of them.
