Shelby Forsythia is a grief coach, author and podcast host who helps grieving people build lives they love from the lives loss forced them to live. Her work rests on a simple conviction: grief is not something we "get over," but something we grow through, and when we stop treating it as an enemy it can become a teacher.
Her path began with her mother's sudden death from a recurrence of breast cancer in December 2013, when Shelby was 21. She has described a moment in 2016 when she heard a small, quiet voice tell her she had given herself permission to grieve. Curious about that idea, she worked with experts and guides, did her own "student of grief" research, and began sharing what she learned online. In August 2016 she founded her grief coaching business and streamed her first Facebook Live.
In May 2017 she launched the podcast Coming Back, which featured interviews with more than 100 grief experts, authors and thought leaders and ran until December 2020. Today she hosts the weekly podcast Grief Grower, with solo episodes and conversations with grief experts. She is the author of three books: Permission to Grieve, Your Grief, Your Way, and Of Course I'm Here Right Now, a guide for friends, family and professionals who want to support someone who is grieving.
Shelby developed the GRIEF Method, a practical framework for moving forward without "moving on." Through mindfulness tools and intuitive, open-ended questions, she guides clients through death, divorce, diagnosis and other major life transitions, and offers her work through one-on-one coaching and her online program and community, Life After Loss Academy. Her work has been featured in Huffington Post, Bustle and The Oprah Magazine.
Worth Knowing
Shelby Forsythia is a grief coach, author and podcast host whose work is built around the idea that grief is not something to 'get over' but something to grow through. Her own path began in December 2013, when her mother died suddenly from a recurrence of breast cancer and Shelby was 21. She described herself as a 'student of grief' from that point, working with experts and guides, researching on her own, and publishing what she learned online. In 2016 she founded her grief coaching business, and she later developed the GRIEF Method, a practical framework for moving forward without 'moving on.' Readers and listeners tend to value her because the advice comes from someone who spent years studying loss from the inside before teaching it. Her focus covers grief after death, divorce and diagnosis, and her work also speaks to people supporting someone who is grieving. Her approach is more interested in building a life that includes heartbreak than in restoring a life that existed before it.
