A New Day by Prashanti Paz: A Listening Guide

A New Day arrived on January 29, 2021, as a single with one track. It is a small release, and it sits at an interesting hinge in Prashanti Paz's story. Paz is a devotional singer, musician, writer and meditation teacher, born in Patagonia, Argentina, and now based in The Hague. In 2016 she moved from a screenwriting career into full-time sacred music and teaching. Her full-length albums Inner Light (2017) and Into the Heart (2019) came first, and Beyond followed in 2023. A New Day belongs to the stretch in between, alongside Lokah Samastah (2020) and Coming Home (2021), when she turned toward what her catalog describes as heart songs. It is also credited as featuring Kevin Johansen, a rare collaboration with a contemporary songwriter in a catalog otherwise built around her own voice and traditional mantras.

The Sonic Character

I'll be candid about the limits here. This is a single track, and there is no detailed credit list to lean on, so what follows draws on the sound she is known for rather than on a line-by-line account of this recording.

Paz's voice is often described as luminous and soothing, a clear alto that favors restraint over vocal display. Her arrangements are typically sparse: harmonium as the main accompaniment, occasionally light strings, and no drum machine, synth or layered loops. Pacing follows the breath. Phrases leave room around them, and silence is part of the music.

The heart songs differ from her Sanskrit mantra work in one important way. They are described as more personal and contemporary, closer to song than to chant. That should make A New Day the easier doorway for listeners who want reflection without the full formality of mantra practice. The mood to expect is gentle and introspective, more morning light than ceremony.

The Track Worth Naming

There is only one, and the title does the work: "A New Day." What makes a single like this land is its focus. With no sequencing to follow and no album arc to absorb, you can give the whole piece your attention in one sitting. Its pairing with Kevin Johansen also marks it as a meeting point, with Paz's devotional sensibility on one side and a contemporary songwriting voice on the other. Whether you hear it as a prayer, a greeting to the day or a quiet song of renewal, the appeal lies in how little stands between you and the voice.

Place in the Tradition

Paz's practice is rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, and her work ranges across Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and shamanic mantras. She was raised in an interfaith family, with a Jewish father and a Christian mother, and that ecumenical spirit runs through her music. Kirtan is the genre label most often attached to her, though her approach differs from the call-and-response group singing of traditional kirtan. Her recordings are closer to solo, introspective devotion.

A New Day sits at the edge of that tradition. It is a heart song rather than a classical mantra setting, which makes it a bridge: devotional in feeling, contemporary in form. It belongs with the pandemic-era releases that opened her catalog to listeners who might never have sought out a Sanskrit chant.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This single is best suited to someone at a threshold: starting a new chapter, recovering from a hard stretch, or simply wanting a gentler way into the morning. It will suit newcomers curious about Paz who are not ready for a full mantra album, and longtime listeners who want to hear her in a more personal register.

It is less suited to anyone wanting high-energy group ritual, lush production or ambient texture that fades into the background. Her work puts the voice at the center and rewards attention.

How to Listen Closely

Give it a single, undistracted play. Early morning is the obvious fit given the title, but a quiet evening works equally well as a way of closing a day and setting an intention for the next. Headphones will bring out the intimacy of the voice and the spaces between phrases. Sit or lie still, let the song finish, and stay for a minute of silence afterward.

Then, if the voice draws you in, follow it outward. Inner Light is the recommended starting point for her full-length work, with Into the Heart and Beyond to follow, and Coming Home sits nearest to this single in spirit.
