Shiva shankara by Nirodha: A Listening Guide

Shiva shankara is a single, released on 14 December 2023, with one track on it. It is a small release, and this guide treats it that way: a look at one piece of music and the project around it, without claims the facts don't support.

Where It Sits in Nirodha's Arc

Nirodha is the meditative project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. His work runs along two threads. One is wordless, for sleep and stillness, built on native flute and classical guitar. The other is voice and mantra: chant, kirtan, and voice with tanpura. The title Shiva shankara, an invocation in Sanskrit, places this single with the second thread. It sits beside the album Chants from the Heart, which sets Sanskrit mantra to harmonium, voice and silence.

A single suits this project. Espada works by subtraction, asking what can be removed rather than added. One track released on its own is that idea at its smallest scale.

Sonic Character

I can't give you a verified instrument list for this particular recording, so I'll describe the palette Nirodha works from. The project is built on native flute, classical guitar, harmonium, tanpura and voice, each chosen because it can hold a single tone without demanding attention. Espada records alone, mostly at night, with whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest. Expect that same logic here: a clear, unhurried voice, long tones, and space left open.

The pacing is the main thing. This music is not rhythmically propulsive, and it doesn't build to a climax or add lush reverb for drama. The mood is introspective rather than ecstatic. If you know kirtan as a communal, percussive, call-and-response event, this is its quieter, interior cousin.

The Track Worth Naming

With one track, there is one signature piece, and it carries the title.

"Shiva shankara" works as a single-pointed object. Mantra relies on repetition and resonance, and a release of one track lets you stay with a single sound world without moving on to another. Nirodha's stated aim is to still mental noise. A single gives that aim nothing to compete with: no sequencing, no contrast between tracks, no decision about what to play next. What makes it land, if it lands for you, will be the clarity of the voice and what the music leaves out.

Place in the Tradition

Nirodha's work sits within the broader Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, the chanting of mantras usually accompanied by harmonium. Espada approaches it as a composer, not as a traditionalist scholar, and the music isn't tied to a particular guru-disciple lineage. His guiding idea is that stillness is something you remember rather than something you achieve. He doesn't present mantra as devotion aimed at a deity so much as a way of quieting the thinking mind through repetition and sound.

So Shiva shankara belongs to kirtan in its material and to meditative music in its manner. It is less a communal chant than a solitary one, recorded in the same spirit as the rest of his catalogue.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This single is for listeners who already enjoy slowness. It suits someone winding down at the end of a loud day, or a person building a mantra or meditation practice who wants a short, uncluttered piece to sit with. Because the voice is clear and the arrangement spare, it is also approachable for people new to Sanskrit chant, since nothing obscures the sound and you can follow by ear.

It is less suited to anyone who wants kirtan's communal heat, percussion and rising energy. Nirodha's music is built to be anti-stimulation. If you use meditation music as a productivity tool or want emotional catharsis, it may feel static. It also isn't meant as passive background listening; it asks for patient attention.

How to Listen

Choose an evening, since this music comes out of night recording and suits that hour. Keep it solitary, and lower the lights if you can. Headphones will help you hear the quiet parts, though a still room and a small speaker are enough.

Because the release is one track, you can treat it as a ritual unit. Sit before pressing play. Let the track run once without doing anything else. Then, when it ends, stay put for a few minutes of silence. Espada leaves space within his music on purpose, and the minutes after it ends are part of the same piece.

If you listen again, try repeating the mantra softly under your breath, or simply follow the breath. Either approach fits the project's premise that you aren't being asked to reach stillness, only to remember it.

Where to Go Next

If this single appeals, Chants from the Heart is the natural next step for more voice and mantra. Surya, which pairs nylon-string classical guitar with tanpura, offers a wordless alternative. You can also find Nirodha on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Insight Timer and nirodhamusic.com.
