Where This Album Sits in Nirodha's Arc

Nirodha is the meditative music project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. His work runs along two threads: a wordless one for sleep and stillness, built on native flute and classical guitar, and a voice-and-mantra one built on chant, kirtan and voice with tanpura. Chants from the Heart belongs to the second thread. Released on 10 November 2023 as a five-track single-format release, it is where Espada sets Sanskrit mantra to harmonium, voice and silence.

Within his three albums, this is the most explicitly vocal. Night Sanctuary, still in progress, is native flute for sleep. Surya pairs nylon-string classical guitar with tanpura. Chants from the Heart brings in the human voice as the central instrument. It reads as the point where a project named for the stilling of mental noise turns to the oldest tool for that job: repeated words.

Sonic Character

The palette is deliberately small: voice, harmonium and a great deal of space. Espada chooses instruments for their ability to hold a single tone without demanding attention, and that principle governs the whole record. The harmonium does not push. It sustains, giving the voice a floor to rest on rather than a rhythm to follow.

The singing is clear, present and unhurried. It is not ornamental and not ecstatic. There are no melismatic flights, no percussion driving the room upward, and no lush reverb or orchestration. The pacing is slow enough that the silences between phrases feel like part of the composition rather than gaps. Espada records alone, mostly at night, and the intimacy shows. This sounds like one person in a quiet room, asking of each element whether it is necessary.

The mood is inward, steady and plain. It does not build to a climax. It settles.

Signature Tracks

I have no track titles for this release, so rather than guess at names, here is what to listen for across the five tracks.

The opening mantra. Whichever track begins the sequence sets the terms: a harmonium tone, then the voice entering without ceremony. Notice how little happens, and how quickly that stops feeling like absence. The restraint is the statement of purpose.

The mid-album repetition. Somewhere in the middle of the record, the repetition of a Sanskrit phrase stops registering as words and starts working as texture. This is the mechanism Espada is after: quieting the thinking mind through repetition and resonance. Let one phrase loop until you stop analyzing it.

The closing silence. The final stretch is where the record's use of silence lands hardest. Pay attention to the decay of the last harmonium note and the quiet after it. Espada treats that quiet as material, not as an afterthought.

Place in Its Tradition

The album sits within the Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, which is typically call-and-response chanting of mantras with harmonium and percussion. But Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditional scholar, and the record does not claim a guru or lineage. It is closer to a distillation than a replica: the harmonium and Sanskrit remain, while the communal heat and percussion are set aside.

His guiding idea, that stillness is something you remember rather than achieve, shapes how the mantras function here. They are offered less as devotion aimed outward and more as a way to quiet the mind through repetition. If you come looking for the ecstatic, rhythmic energy of a live kirtan circle, this will feel spare. If you come for the contemplative core of the practice, it is well served.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album is for the listener comfortable with subtlety and patient attention. It suits beginners to kirtan and Sanskrit especially: the singing is clear, the arrangements are simple, and nothing requires prior knowledge. You can follow by ear.

It lands hardest at a moment of mental overload, such as the end of a noisy day, a stretch of restlessness, or the start of a meditation practice that has not yet found its footing. It is also a good companion for people who already sit in silence and want a voice that does not crowd it.

It is not for everyone. Listeners wanting propulsive rhythm, call-and-response energy or emotional catharsis will likely find it too minimal. It is not designed as passive background music, and it rewards attention rather than distraction.

How to Listen

Choose the evening. Espada makes this music mostly at night, and it keeps that character. Dim the lights, sit on the floor or a cushion if you can, and play the five tracks in order without interruption. Headphones will bring out the room-like closeness of the voice and the harmonium's sustained tone, though a quiet room with modest speakers works as well.

Listen once with full attention, then try it again as an accompaniment to sitting practice. Don't chase the meaning of the words on the first pass. Let the sound do its work, and notice what remains in the silence after the last note fades.
